I actually liked this novel "Lolita in Tehran" which explores feminism in Iran. And you may like it. I noted the parody since I write sketch comedy have a great week @theglobaldig.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteHi, Trin!
DeleteThanks for coming over to take the Early Bird spot this week as I present my last Halloween related post of 2022, a salute to the comedy horror film Stan Helsing!
I'm pleased that you appreciated the parody of the film Lolita used in E.G. Daily's music video for her mid 1980s hit single "Say it, Say It." I worked in the MTV realm at the time, and can tell you that the video was heavily requested by viewers. Thanks for sharing about the book Reading Lolita In Tehran written by Iranian author and professor Azar Nafisi describing a book club held at her home and feminist-leaning female students meeting there to discuss written works of Western literature, including Vladimir Nabokov's controversial novel Lolita.
I'm very happy that you returned to check out my latest post, Trin. Thank you again for taking an interest in Shady's Place. Have a wonderful week ahead, my new friend!
E.G. Daily changed Nabokov's ending, but that's all right. Times change. And it makes up for poor Shelly getting hit by a car.
ReplyDeleteThe Debbie Harry solo number is a surprise treat. I never heard it before. I wonder if it's meant as kind humorous comment on all the '80s songs with either "USA" or "America" in the title.
Hold It Down's version of "Fight for Your Right to Party" has less of a gleeful feeling than The Beastie Boys original. I don't mean that as a criticism, but just that it may be another sign of changing times. Take the guy with the mask. We know in this Age of Covid that parties are superspreading events. The dourer approach in this cover may be that whereas The Beasties knew they were DEFINITELY going to that party, these guys don't. I know, I know, I'm analyzing it when I'm supposed to be just listening for fun or whatever. Well, for some of us, analyzing IS fun. I'll fight for my right to do that!
Nice to hear the Kim Wilde song again. I forgot about it.
Since I have a soft spot for glam rock, I guess my favorite, or at least what I prefer to end my comment with this time, is the Lipz cover of "Dangerous". As you know, Roxette's original had a man and a woman singing to each other, but the woman is singing "she's dangerous" in the third person. So maybe she's his sister. This new version simplifies matters. I have to take the images in the video in account (but then glam rock is nothing if not visual.) The lead is singing about a woman who he deems dangerous (mainly because of her slut walk attire.) Yet despite that she seems kind of worried in what looks to be a biker bar, as she tentatively strips, and somehow ends up in another slut walk outfit (credit the video's editor) before finally enjoying herself with abandon. Like Alice in Wonderland, but definitely not like Alice in Wonderland, she wakes up, it's all a dream. Yet that worried look is back on her face. Was it a nightmare? But you normally only have nightmares in which you're running from danger, and not towards it. As Spock would say, fascinating. I won't waste your time, but I could analyze this video for hours on end and have great fun doing so.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteWow, good buddy, I didn't expect you over so early in the post's run, and especially at this early hour of the day! Thanks so much for dropping in on day one to meet Bosom Buddies Mia and Nadine, the Scream Queens of Stan Helsing and listen to their tuneage!
I'm happy that you are familiar with Lolita, the book and the film. As I told you recently, I have the Stanley Kubrick DVD Collection which includes Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket. I also studied Lolita in my college film course. This E.G. Daily video was played heavily at the MTV station where I worked at the time. I remember re-dubbing it from the master over and over again because it played so often that our playback decks wore out the tapes.
I'm excited that I introduced you to that great but little known and seldom heard Debbie Harry song. Deb's single was first released in the UK in November, 1986, with the title "French Kissin' In The USA." Upon its release in the U.S., the "USA" reference was dropped from the title so that it merely reads "French Kissin'." That does indeed seem rather strange. The song is one of my favorites from Debbie's post-Blondie solo career. Here again, the video was heavily requested by viewers at my MTV station.
Yes, good buddy. That's a "quarantine cover" by the Indonesian garage rock cover band with the imaginative name - Hold It Down. As you might have noticed in the caption, they uploaded the video in May 2020, when the dreaded virus was "going viral." That might have affected the song selection and the mood conveyed.
In the 14+ years since I started blogging, I have cultivated an appreciation of Kim Wilde, an artist I had previously overlooked and dismissed. I'm finding an awful lot to like in the remastered performance clips and official music videos of the English pop diva, and I will gradually work them into upcoming posts. I'm glad you like Kim, too.
Roxette is another act that I largely ignored for decades and discovered through blogging. I will be posting Roxette songs as time goes by, and I'm pleased that you enjoyed this cover by the little known Swedish glam band Lipz. The otherworldly video delivers everything a glam rock/sleaze metal fan could want, including pretty boys in makeup, fog machine and a jiggling, scantily clad bimbo who winds up slithering around on her belly like a reptile. It might very well be nature's perfect music video! Yes, in the end it was all just a good girl's bad girl dream.... or was it?????
Kirk, I love when you taken an interest in my content and analyze, because I love to do the same. I agree that it is fun, and I don't view if as a waste of time. Thank you again for hustling over so quickly. Before I forget, I highly recommend the horror comedy parody film Stan Helsing. It's a hoot-and-a-half. The humor is similar to that found in the Zucker Brothers' comedy classic Airplane! (1980). Stan Helsing even features Airplane! alumnus and all-time great funnyman Leslie Nielsen - in drag, no less! I swear that I laughed almost nonstop through this wacky creature feature.
Have a super week ahead, good buddy Kirk!
I'm clearly not up on visual media anymore! (if I ever really was to begin with)
ReplyDeleteWishing you and Mrs. Shady a fun, spooky Halloween!
Hi, Kelly!
DeleteTwo other satisfied customers beat you across the finish line this week, dear friend, but I am every happy to see you and thank you for being here as usual on day one!
By visual media, I take it you are referring to the horror films represented by the images of "Famous Monsters of Filmland" that I included in my "review" of Stan Helsing. Yessum, there are many new 21st century "horror icons" that appear in one sequel after another, because fans of the genre have come to recognize them and love them. I can also highly recommend two new kids on the block - swamp ghost Victor Crowley, and Art the Clown, star of two Terrifier films and All Hallow's Eve. Art's a hoot! I also highly recommend the movie that is the focus of today's post, Stan Helsing. It is very low on gore and mainly played for laughs, with a style of humor reminiscent of Airplane!, National Lampoon's Vacation and other edgy comedy classics.
Happy Halloween to you, to my buddy Pat and to your entire family including the two new dogs in your canine clan. Thanks again for coming and have a wonderful week, dear friend Kelly!
Holy cow, this is my second attempt at commenting and I'm hoping this one goes through! My first thoughts went like this: Beautiful girls, rock and roll, scary movies, beautiful girls, rock and roll..It's Halloween Shady style! The tunes aren't on my playlist...I don't even have a playlist..but I really liked "Dangerous"! Jack walked by and heard the music and said, "You must be reading Shady's post"...Ha! Yeppers I am! So thanks for the treats tonight and I hope you get lots of goodies in your trick or treat bag tomorrow! Boo!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteThank you very much for coming down on day one, and welcome to my final Halloween post of 2022, dear friend! (I can hear you cheering 1,000 miles away! :)
First, I am sorry that you and others are having a tough time leaving comments. One friend's comments are occasionally being sent to the spam bin. Another needs to comment using "anonymous." Others, like you, have sometimes failed to get their thoughts published on the first or even second try. I am truly sorry this is happening. I have not changed my settings in years, but Blogger did change its interface, and ever since, there have been problems of this kind.
Yessum, Halloween is the time of year when I allow myself to go a little crazy (not that I don't do it all year 'round). My favorite movie genre is comedy-horror, and H-ween is the time I pay tribute to some of the best examples, like Stan Helsing. The movie is a lot more innocent than these visuals might imply. It is really not that different from the long running heartland TV series Hee Haw that had its resident "Hee Haw Honeys," or Petticoat Junction, a sitcom that showed off the assets of the three young women, Gilligan's Island, a show that routinely put Ginger and Mary Ann on display, Dean Martin's Golddiggers, the Solid Gold dancers, and on and on. The leading ladies of Stan Helsing, Mia and Nadine, are actually very nice, innocent and wholesome compared to many that I have seen in other horror and thriller movies. They are quite likable and funny. The actresses, Diora Baird (Nadine) and Desi Lydic (Mia) are both talented comedic actresses. The humor is the style you often see in horror/slasher parody movies and National Lampoon productions. This week, I watched Stan Helsing for the second time to refresh my memory, and i liked it every bit as much as the first time. It's a hoot, naughty fun. but no gore and quite tame compared to many other straight horror films that lack the comedy component.
I'm pleasantly surprised that you like Lipz. I thought they would be the black sheep of the post, but you aren't the only friend to single it out as a favorite. If you listen to the song w/o watching the video, you realize that the lead singer has a very non-intimidating vocal style, and that the song itself sounds, especially on the chorus, a lot like the Journey hit "Don't Stop Believin'." Simply put, Lipz has a very mainstream retro 80s glam rock - power pop sound, even if their video is over the top and somewhat crude.
I'm so glad you found some things to like in Shady's post. Thank you very much for your kind visit and excellent comments. I haven't stopped thinking about Annabelle and hope with all my heart that she is fully recovered from her recent stomach problems and back to having doggy fun at The Pines. Happy Halloween 2022 to you and your family, dear friend YaYa!
Happy Halloween, dear friend! This post got me into the spooky mood, and I might have to check out Stan Helsing. Sounds like a good movie, especially with E.G. Daily. I love Rugrats and Powderpuff Girls.
ReplyDeleteAll these songs are new to me, and I really enjoyed them. I'll have to listen today while at work.
Have a spooky day.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for keeping your word to return and check out my final H-ween post of 2022, dear friend!
Yessum, you and David or some other friend should watch Stan Helsing. It's a funny horror-slasher parody movie with monsters and quirky characters galore. I think you'll get a kick out of it. FYI - E.G. Daily is not in Stan Helsing. The two leading ladies are played by Scream Queen fan favorites Diora Baird and Desi Lydic. They are likable characters, not nasty, bitchy mean girls as you often see in films of this type. They aren't very different from Ginger and Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island Mia is a ditsy airhead, while Nadine is brighter and more grounded in reality. Again, both are cute, likable characters.
Yessum, listen and whistle while you work. That's what Shady's playlists are for. You might like Lipz and Burning Witches. Have a happy Halloween, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteI think I am going to suggest this movie to David. He said his friends want to meet me, so maybe in the future, we can all watch it together.
Didn't get a chance to listen to again yesterday, but I'm listening now. Have a great 1 November!
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteWell, I'm thrilled that you mentioned Stan Helsing to David and there's a good chance that you, he and his friends will all watch it together - a Stan Helsing party! I think you'll all enjoy it.
Yessum, I hope you'll play these tunes. There's some edgy material on this playlist that should appeal to your rockin' sensibilities.
Happy November to you, dear friend JM!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteGreat conclusion to your Halloween series. I'm not sure where October went. My head has been in a fog much of this month thanks to seasonal allergies and being drained but I'm on the mend. You introduced a number of songs/artists to me in this post. I figured I'd know Debbie Harry's song and I vaguely recall listening to it in recent years but I don't remember it when it came out. The song/artist to pique my interest most is Tesse Violet. After I leave here, I'm going to YouTube to sample more of her tunes. I hope y'all didn't get bombarded with goblins and ghouls tonight. As for us, the porch light will be off to discourage trick or treaters. This hasn't ever been much of an issue in our neighborhood, even when there were more kids living on the street and it slowly kept tapering off over the years. That's okay by me. Have a boogietastic week, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteI'm delighted to see you, dear friend. Happy Halloween!
Yessum, this is the last in my long string of H-ween related posts that began in mid September with only a couple of unrelated posts inserted along the way, including the first volume in my 36-part Saved By The Dell series which resumes immediately after this current post completes its run.
I'm very pleased that you singled out Tessa Violet, a wonderful performer that no other friend has mentioned so far. I discovered her a few years ago. Tessa has a lot going for her. She's a beauty with a velvety voice and graceful dance moves. Her mewsic videos and performance clips are professionally produced. Moreover, she writes her own songs. I'm very impressed by her and have more of her songs in the pipeline.
The Debbie Harry solo single "French Kissin'" is a mystery to me. It peaked at #8 in the UK, but didn't even make it halfway up the Hot 100 stateside. They even tinkered with the title which doesn't help. Debbie was still a big name in the recording industry at that time and deserved to have her single promoted more effectively in the U.S. The "French Kissin'" video was quite popular at the MTV station where I worked at the time.
Like you guys, we are going to keep the porch light turned off this year. I suspect the road out front of our house will be crowded with cars, trucks, hay wagons and kids in search of candy, but we are not participating in T or T night, and haven't ever since the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Cathy! Once again, happy Halloween 2022 to you and your family!
Tom,
DeleteI appreciate you dropping by to participate in this month's BOTB. I failed to mention at the end that I'll be sharing my next edition of my Maine vacation photo memories first thing tomorrow. I did update my it to remind others. My head isn't screwed on properly stillI but I'll get there. :)
It was quiet here last night. If it weren't for us streaming one of our streaming services last night I nearly forgot it was Halloween night. I don't blame you for keeping your guard up still regarding Covid. There's no sense to put yourself at risk if it's not necessary.
I thought it interesting that you used "French Kissin'" mainly because a few days earlier I was repairing a broken link in a post and the content subject was The Kiss. In short, I lists four dozen types of kisses. Anyway, this got the gears turning for a future 4M post and then seeing this song I knew I that I would include it in my line up.
Well...I'm gonna cut out of here for now. I'm listening to Tessa Violet and will continue to sample the YT playlist in the background while I tend to some chores. Have a bandtastic day, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteThanks for returning to follow-up, dear friend!
Yessum, I figured you'd post the next leg of your Maine vacay tomorrow. I'll be looking for it, because I am eager to read about your adventures up there and see those stunning pics and videos.
We had a "quiet" Halloween, too. There were dozens of T-or-T kids walking up and down the road out front and many vehicles including monster trucks and a hay wagon, but our doorbell never rang. I made sure to keep the lights subdued while I watched a scary movie entitled Hellhole. It was intense, definitely on the disturbing end of the horror genre spectrum. Stan Helsing, on the other hand, is far on the other side of the spectrum, not quite as far as Casper the Friendly Ghost, mind you, but definitely more lighthearted than Hellhole which is deadly serious.
WOW, I never knew there are 48 different types of kisses. I suspect some of them are illegal in certain states. :) I am honored that you liked Debbie Harry's minor hit single "French Kissin'" enough to use it in a 4M kissing theme post. Thank you! I am also very pleased that you like Chicago-based Indie Pop artist Tessa Violet enough to explore her channel.
Thanks again for returning to chat, dear friend Cathy. Whistle while you work today and I'll see you at CAAC tamale!
Tom,
DeleteOver the weekend, we did a bit of binge watching of The Walking Dead (AMC+) on Friday and then on Saturday we had a movie night watching Young Frankenstein and the 999 remake The House On Haunted Hill on HBO Max Saturday night. I like super creepy movies, especially of the slice & dice variety.
Kisses illegal? That seems funny but you might be right about that. Some of the stuff I read sometimes, I think "How is it I don't know about this?" What's even funnier is something that seems new to me is often an old concept. My brain isn't naturally wired to think that way.
I listened to Tessa Violet for a long time yesterday. I'm still not through the entire playlist I started. She reminds me a teeny bit of Rosanna Pansino, a YT foodie vlogger. She posted an original song, "Perfect Together" that I stumbled on somehow. The connection between DH & me were felt in the lyrics, so I had to buy it! :)
Thanks for continuing in sharing with me the memories captured digitally for a lifetime. Have a wonderful Wednesday, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteIt's wonderful to welcome you over here again, dear friend!
Thanks for letting me know you watched House On Haunted Hill (1999). I don't have any way of watching it free at this time, but I will keep lurking for it. I read the reviews on IMDB and most are favorable. Apparently the film is not a slavish remake of the original Vincent Price movie that I first watched in 1959, because it adds so much background info about the characters and the story begins where the original left off.
I'm really tickled that you took an interest in Tessa Violet and wound up buying one of her songs. Yessum, the pictures you took in Maine will bring back many happy memories for you and DH the rest of your lives. You did a fine job of documenting your trip!
Happy Wednesday to you also, dear friend Cathy, and thanks again for returning to follow-up. Enjoy the rest of your week!
Wowza! What a mix of sexy and scary my friend! We saw Debbie Harry this year for the first time at the Mountain Winery. She still looks and sings great. I can't remember if she sang that song. I was not familiar with Tessa Violet's song but I like it.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll leave the trick or treaters to my husband and work out in my studio tonight. Hope you have a great rest of your week dear Shady.
Hi, Janet!
DeleteI'm thrilled to see you, dear friend! Thanks for finding my post and reporting for duty. :) Yessum, sexy and scary go hand in claw, and I wanted friends like you to know about this very funny comedy - SHASH - horror - SLASH - parody movie Stan Helsing. It is loaded with references to horror film cliches. The plot revolves around a pack of bloodthirsty horror movie icons chasing the four main characters as they try to survive the night and save their city. All the action takes place in a single night, same as in American Graffiti. It's a hoot and a holler.
Thanks for telling me that you saw Debbie Harry this year at The Winery. I didn't even know she was still doing shows. It's good to know she's still got it. I am also pleased that Tessa Violet caught your eye and ear and gets another like. She is a deserving young artist with many catchy pop songs on her YouTube channel. Her productions are slick and professional.
Like you and Cathy (above), we are going to remain in a blackout tonight. I'm sure the trick-or-treaters will manage to score enough candy elsewhere to give themselves bellyaches and promote tooth decay. I hope my buddy Benny won't get spooked by all the noise and scary costumes going past your window tonight.
FYI - I get back to my "regular" program schedule starting with my next post to be pubbed this Friday. I hope you can swing by. Thanks again for joining the fun. Happy Halloween and have a wonderful week, dear friend Janet!
If it stars Leslie Nielsen, I must see this flick. Yes, these girls look very talented and I mean the actresses too. (bada bump). I enjoyed Deborah Harry and I didn't mind the first song to be honest. You know me with anything sounding heavy metal...that's like you and musicals. Overall, I enjoyed the listen but it is way too late and I must get my shut eye. Tomorrow brings All Saint's day of which I am not:)
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteThanks for staying up late on Halloween night to visit your favorite haunt - Shady's Place - dear friend, and learn about a hoot of a horror flick - Stan Helsing - winner of 50 Academy Awards including Best Performance in a Supporting Role for Nadine's halter top. The pulchritudinous parody has earned the coveted Shady Del Knight Zeal of Approval. The spooky spoof jumps from one horror-slasher genre cliche to another. I have watched it twice now, and each time I was either smiling or laughing out loud from start to finish. Leslie Nielsen does not star in Stan Helsing, but he has a sizeable role, not merely a bit part or cameo. You might lose your lunch when you see him in drag. Leading ladies Diora Baird as Nadine and Desi Lydic as Mia will double-D-light you. Nadine and Mia are likeable characters - funny and sexy without coming across as sleazy.
I'm happy to learn that you liked the Debbie Harry song and video and "didn't mind" the first song by E.G. Daily which, if I am not mistaken, is a favorable reaction to it. I'm sure you recognized the music video as a parody of Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of Lolita that stars Peter Sellers, James Mason, Sue Lyon and Shelley Winters.
Thank you again for staying up late to have some Halloween fun in the Shady when you would have been better off getting much-needed shuteye. I wish you and my buddy Harley a blessed All Saints' Day aka All Hallows' Day aka Feast of All Saints aka Feast of All Hallows aka Solemnity of All Saints aka Hallowmas, dear friend BB!
I can take vampires, an occasional ghoul, and at least one handful of zombies, but I can not even think about Chucky without going cold at my center. His image alone sends me under the covers. There's something about a deadly doll that reveals just how cowardly I really am.
ReplyDeleteHi, Cheryl-Lee!
DeleteHappy November, dear friend, and thanks for swinging by! I'm very happy to see you back at Shady's Place as a new month begins, and you're just in time to catch my last Halloween post of the season.
I agree that there's something about an evil, violent doll that is particularly disturbing. In my featured movie, Stan Helsing, the Chucky doll is around 5 feet tall, but the character is played for laughs. I think horror movie clowns are also very scary, especially the two that appear in my sidebar as new members of the Shady Bunch, namely "Twisty" from American Horror Story, and Art the Clown from Terrifier.
Thanks again for coming by, dear friend Cheryl-Lee. I wish you a safe and happy November!
How do I not know any of these songs? I usually know a few of the songs you post but not this time. I know some of the movies these characters are from though. Freddy is a favorite of course.
ReplyDeleteSorry I haven't been around in a few days. My internet and phone went out took a few days to get fixed.
Hi, Mary!
DeleteWelcome, dear friend, and thanks for coming! I'm so glad I checked my spam bin one last time before this post ends its run on the front page because - BINGO! - I found your comment and got it published. I am sorry to learn that you lost internet service this week, and so glad to have you back. Thank you! I didn't want you to miss my final H-ween post of the 2022 spook season.
Yessum, I'm a little surprised you don't know any of these songs but, when I stop and think about it, pop isn't your bag, and the rock bands Lipz and Burning Witches are not very well known. The one song I thought you'd remember is the Beastie Boys' signature song "Fight For Your Right To Party," covered here by an obscure Indonesian garage band.
I'm pleased that you recognized some of these Famous Monsters of Filmland spoofed in the comedy horror movie Stan Helsing. It's one of the funniest horror movie parodies I've seen in awhile and it earned my Zeal of Approval.
Thank you again for making every effort to get here. Stick around for my next post starting dark and early tamale. Please take care of my buddy Falcor and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Mary!
