Weekend at Bernie's: I'm in the Mood for Dancing
with Anne, Denise, Maureen, Linda and Coleen

I'm Taylor Kelly...
an LA-based TV news reporter
and Buck's girlfriend on the
fire & rescue series 9-1-1.
I am also a member of
The I-Team
...a new series starting soon
on S-P-M-M Retro Radio.

In this special investigative
report, I'm proud to present the
best girl group you never heard.

They're the six singing Nolan Sisters aka The Nolans...

(back row left to right) - Maureen, Anne (the oldest) and Denise
(front row left to right) Linda and Bernadette (nicknamed "Bernie")
Coleen, the youngest sib, officially joined the act in 1980 at age 15.

The singing sisters emerged from a family act known as Ireland's
First Family of Music and went on to enjoy international fame.
If you never heard of The Nolans or any of their great songs,
it's because only one of their records was released in
North America, and that was in 1976 before
their hit string began.

In 1962, the Nolan family relocated from Dublin to Blackpool,
the large town and seaside resort in Lancashire, England.

It is there in Blackpool in 1963, that the family act The Singing Nolans
was formed. the group included the parents, brothers and all of
the sisters except Coleen who wasn't born until 1965.

Coleen began appearing with the group as soon as she was old enough to perform.

(1972 photo showing 7 year old Coleen sitting on the wall)

In 1974, the girls moved to London, began appearing in clubs and launched
their recording career, first as The Nolan Sisters, and later as The Nolans.

(Coleen, Linda, Maureen, Bernie)

From 1979 to 1982, The Nolans racked-up seven international hits,
most of them written by the composing team of Findon, Myers & Puzey.

(Coleen upper left, Bernie upper right, Linda lower left, Maureen lower right)

They were particularly successful in Japan, the first European act to
win the Tokyo Music Festival with their song "Sexy Music" in 1981.

(Linda, Coleen, Maureen, Bernie)

In this special investigative report, you will experience some of the Nolans'
greatest live performances as they sing some of their irresistibly catchy
pop-disco songs on various music TV shows of the period. As you
watch and listen to these talented young women, singing stars
like Marie Osmond, Olivia Newton-John, Brenda Lee and
Dolly Parton might come to mind, along with ABBA.

I'll be back at the end of the show with a final word on
The Nolans including a shocking update on one of the girls.

The show begins with The Nolans doing their biggest international hit,
a single that topped the charts in Japan and South Africa in early 1980.

 FINAL WORD

I-Team correspondent
Taylor Kelly back
with you now and
sharing sad news.

I regret to report a
death among these
talented singing
sisters of the
Nolan family.

 THE NOLANS IN 1977

(front left to right) Linda and Bernie
(Coleen, the youngest, was not yet a regular member of the group.)

 Bernadette "Bernie" Nolan

Bernie Nolan, the zesty, vivacious lead singer of The Nolans whom you saw
fronting the group on their wonderful hit songs, passed away in 2013 at the age
of 52 following a prolonged battle with breast cancer. Two of her sisters, Anne
and Linda, were also stricken with the disease but recovered. In honor of her
birthday this month, let's turn back the clock one last time to happier days
and witness a delightful mid 2000s performance and a great moment
in music history as Bernie covers ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All."

I hope you enjoyed meeting The Nolan Sisters aka The Nolans
and listening to their catchy, danceable songs and delightful harmonies.
As far as this reporter is concerned, they are the best girl group I never heard.

  1. Thanks for introducing us to the Nolan Sisters, Shady. Despite being unknown to many of us, it looks like they did have a nice following. That's a shame about Bernie's untimely death.

    1. Hi, Kelly!

By golly, we have us an Early Bird and it be you, dear friend! Thanks for racing right over to meet the best girl group you never heard - the fabulous Irish sisters The Nolans!

Yessum, given the fact that the girls racked up a string of international hits, it's a mystery to me why their records were not released in North America. I think the sensational singing sibs would have been consistent hitmakers in the U.S. and Canada as well.

Yessum, whenever I watch these videos of vintage Nolans performances, I get tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat knowing the fate that awaited lead singer Bernie. She was gifted, sold us on every song, and connected with audiences. She deserved a much longer life.

Thanks again for coming early, dear friend Kelly, and have a super week!

  2. Happy Sunday my friend! What a great introduction to this sister act. I can certainly see their progression as they aged, from wearing exactly the same outfits and singing more 60's style songs to getting into some disco style and expressing their "sexier" side. In the beginning they reminded me of the Lennon Sisters who used to sing on the Lawrence Welk show. Toward the end of your playlist they were more like Olivia Newton John and Donna Summer. Too bad about Bernie and sad to see that the disease affected two of the others as well. That is some big family!
I am working in my studio while watching the Mets/Padres game. I am not as invested in the MLB playoffs as I would be if my Giants had made it but I do want to make sure someone beats those dumb Dodgers and Yankees! Have a wonderful week dear Shady.

    1. Hi, Janet!

Yessum, Shady's Place is open for beeswax, dear friend. Silly me - I forgot to take the "Do Not Disturb Under Any Circumstances. This Means You - Yeah YOU!" sign out of my front window. :) Thank you very much for being here for I-Team reporter Taylor Kelly's special report on the sensational singing Nolan Sisters!

Good eye and ear, Janet! Early on, The Nolan Sisters resembled The Lennon Sisters. At the start of 1980, the girls began their hot streak of international hits with the disco-oriented, irresistibly catchy earworm "I'm In The Mood For Dancing." In a span of three years, The Nolans released a string of delightfully listenable hit songs, most of which are here in this set. I love every one of these ditties. This talented sister act is one of my biggest musical discoveries of the millennium. They are like four or five angels singing together in perfect harmony, and they are certainly easy on the eyes.

Yessum as the Nolan girls became women, they started shaking their booties a little and singing more sophisticated songs. The last song by the group in this set, "Crashing Down" does indeed sound like Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff." The arrangement, riffs and "interpolation" (borrowing a term I learned from friend Kirk) also hint at ABBA's "On And On And On," the Kiss hit "Let's Put The X in Sex," Robert Palmer's "Addicted To Love," Claudja Barry's disco hit "Boogie Woogie Dancin' Shoes" and even CCR's "Fortunate Son." At least, that's what my ears detect. You also might have noticed in the girls stage performances and official music videos there are plenty of ABBA touches, set-ups and camera shots used in ABBA videos.

The Nolans' song "Attention To Me" would be perfectly suited to Dolly Parton. Can you hear it? As you suggested, they also sound at times like ONJ and, as reporter Taylor concluded, their voices and singing style also bring to mind mellow female artists like Marie Osmond, Brenda Lee and Connie Francis.

Yessum, in some of those videos, three of the four girls had breast cancer in their future. It's depressing to know that as you watch them, and what a terrible loss it was when lead singer Bernie died so young. She was a gifted vocalist and knew how to sell a song to the audience.

I'm glad you are enjoying the baseball matchup even though your home team failed to make the cut this season. Maybe my buddy Benny would be willing to make a friendly wager with you on the outcome of the series. :)

Thank you again for coming by on day one, dear friend Janet. I really appreciate it as well as your great comment. Have a wonderful week!

  3. Very entertaining, and that's a killer version of the ABBA song, but I'm confused about something. You state there were six sisters, but I see five at the most. Did one sister drop out as another sister signed on? If you mentioned this in the text and I just missed it, my apologies.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for staying up late on a Sunday night to experience "Weekend At Bernie's," a title inspired by the 1989 black comedy film that stars Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman. If you haven't seen the movie, it's a hoot and recommended. I couldn't resist using the title for this post dedicated to the memory of the wonderful Bernie Nolan and saluting her and her delightful sister act The Nolan Sisters aka The Nolans. I'm happy to know that you found them entertaining.

I am also pleased that you saw and heard the greatness in Bernie's rendition of "Winner Takes It All." She nailed it, as they say, and had precious few years of her life remaining after that live appearance. Read the YouTube comments beneath that video and you will get a sense of how much Bernie was adored by fans in countries lucky enough to have been exposed to her as lead singer of her sister group. I feel robbed of that opportunity. I never even knew about the group until a few weeks ago. Fortunately, YouTube producers have been working hard in the years since Bernie's death to restore videos of The Nolans' performances on TV shows in various countries. I am proud to bring you the best of them in this post.

In the 1970s, all of the sisters were involved in the family singing group which included mom and dad and their brothers. Anne and Denise are the two oldest sisters. At some point, Denise, the second oldest, dropped out of the act. I don't think you see her in any of these videos. Coleen, the youngest sibling, joined the group when she came of age. Thereafter some performances include five sisters and others have the group as a quartet with the oldest sister, Anne, not appearing because she was in semi-retirement. By the way, ever since the year 2000, Coleen, the youngest, has been a regular cast member of the live British TV talk show Loose Women which is similar to America's The View. As you can see and hear in this clip, Coleen is an outspoken sparkplug on the show:

Thanks again for attending the concert, good buddy Kirk, and be sure to catch TV news correspondent Taylor Kelly and her boyfriend, brave fireman Buck, on the first-responder TV series 9-1-1.

  4. Tom,

Thanks for dropping by CAAC this morning. Our son's wedding went off without a hiccup. It was beautiful and not a dry eye in the building during the ceremony. The occasion was happy and sad. The union of our son and his bride was joyful followed with sorrow with our daughter's departure to return to Maine. All in all it was wonderful to have the entire family together. :)

The Nolans sound familiar but I think it's because they have that classic 70s & 80s sound. I did pick up how much the lead female vocalist reminds me of ABBA. The girls harmony is lovely. Siblings seem to do this best, don't they? How sad to read that Bernie died from breast cancer but I'm glad to read that her two sisters who also had the disease have recovered. Bernie covering ABBA's hit, The Winner Takes It All was a nice way to wind things up especially since I picked up early on how much she reminded me of them. Thanks for the introduction, my friend. Have a boogietastic week!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Sorry my reply is coming late. Mrs. Shady cracked her whip and had me outdoors doing yard work this morning. I'm pooped! :)

I'm happy to see you, dear friend, and overjoyed to find out that the wedding ceremony took place AOK and that there wasn't a dry eye to be found in the chapel. Happy happy day, Cathy, and thank you for coming over for a visit. Yessum, I imagine it was hard to say goodbye to your New England DD and have her return north, not knowing how long it will be until you see her again. If LA was there, I'm wondering if she was the flower girl. If you happen to read this, let me know. I'm curious as a Cathy.

Yessum, The Nolans had the look and sound that defined a period in popular mewsic history when danceable ditties performed by attractive, nicely dressed girl groups (along with the boy-girl group ABBA) were very much the "in" thing. The Nolans' songs served as a pleasant, parent-endorsed alternative to the harder and heavier forms of music that were making inroads at the time. Yessum, you'd be hard pressed to find better and tighter vocal harmony than that of the Nolan Sisters. I agree that singing siblings always seem to stand out as top notch performers. As you noticed, the girls had their choreography worked out and moved gracefully on stage as they performed, adding to their appeal. Bernie was a fabulous lead singer for the sister act. She made a genuine connection with the audience and her singing style was fresh and exciting. She always seemed to be enjoying herself, and that sincerity attracted many fans. Those same fans were distraught when Bernie lost her battle with cancer in 2013. As you mentioned, two other sisters (Anne and Linda) also had a cancer scare but went into remission. Bernie's mid 2000s cover of "The Winner Takes It All" has to be one of the great live performances ever. She really came through, but sadly had only a few more years to live at the time that program aired.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the Nolans' concert. Thank you again for coming to their show and for your kind comment. Have a super week, dear friend Cathy!

    2. Tom,

LA couldn't be at the wedding. She was sick but she would've made an adorable flower girl. The bride and groom kept the wedding party small, only a maid of honor and best man. In my opinion, simple is better and even though theirs was simple compare to many elaborate weddings, it was quite the ordeal for them to get everything worked out at times. Thankfully, it came together beautifully in the end. DH said a few words at the reception welcoming the bride into the family. Needless to say, he didn't get through it without some tears. What a sweetie! I wish someone had videoed that moment. Drats! I got a text from my New England daughter saying she and her boyfriend tested positive for Covid. This is her 4th time. She's not doing as bad as previous episodes and her BF is worse than her. Poor kids! We'll never know if they got it coming down or going home or from any of the in-betweens. Hopefully no one else at the wedding got it. As I mentioned LA has been sick which now makes me wonder if this is what she has but DD#1 says she's eating and acting normal, other than the low grade fever. Over the weekend it was higher, though. She has an appointment on Friday. I hope she's okay. Have a good day, my friend!

    3. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for returning to chat, dear friend!

Oh my, I'm so sorry that LA was under the weather the day of the wedding. Seems like that was the only disappointment your family encountered as your son and his special lady spoke their vows and tied the knot. I like how you told me she giggled as she recited her vows. I'm guessing that she was feeling a bit shy and self conscious in that moment, and perhaps a little overwhelmed realizing that something she had dreamed about and planned for so long was finally happening. Thank you also for sharing that DH was overcome with emotion as he said a few kind words officially welcoming the new bride into the family.

Oh no! I am so sorry to find out that DD in Maine and her BF have tested positive for Covid. I hope you and DH and other members of the wedding party and reception gathering will be spared from illness. I also hope LA isn't a victim of the virus. You should know by tomorrow what's going on with her. I will be thinking about your stricken loved ones and hoping for their speedy and full recovery.

Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend Cathy. I'll be connecting with you again soon!

Thanks for coming by, good buddy! I'm glad your eyes and ears agree with mine about these singing sisters The Nolans. Yes, you see hairdos on a few of the girls that might have been inspired by Olympic figure skating champion Dorothy Hamill.

You are not alone in never having heard of The Nolans. They were unknown to me until only a few weeks ago when I discovered them on YouTube and rushed this post into production. I can't figure out why their hit singles were never released in the U.S., because I strongly believe they would have found an audience stateside.

Be sure to catch news babe Taylor Kelly on 9-1-1 Los Angeles. Thanks again for swinging over, good buddy Alex!

  6. I'm glad you showcased this group, one I never heard of. This just shows how much North America is in a bubble when it comes to music. They made me think of ABBA and there ya go with the last song sung brilliantly by Bernie, says blue eye shadow. She gad an amazing voice, so strong and clear. What a shame she died way too young and of a breadt Xander that seems to run in the family. She reminded me of Princess Diana in her early days. Happy early Thanksgiving to you.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for dropping in to meet and greet The Nolan Sisters, dear friend!

I'm glad you give the Irish sister act your zeal of approval. For years, The Nolans were a big name music attraction in the UK, across Europe, Australia and Japan, and yet millions of music loving people like you and me in North America never heard of them. If their groovy songs had been released on singles and albums on this side of the pond, I'm sure they would have sold well, and wouldn't it have been nice if the group had toured stateside? It remains an unsolved mystery why those things never happened. I'm writing a letter to Bob Stack!

Yessum, I can't say enough about the late, great and much loved Bernie Nolan. She did indeed have a strong, clear singing voice. She was fresh, enthusiastic and genuine. She seemed born to perform, yet she never appeared to be full of herself, just a nice, sweet, charming young woman. It is difficult for me to watch Bernie's performances knowing the terrible fate that awaited her.

I hope you noticed that there are two videos embedded within pictures of the Nolans group that require you to click on the image to play the YouTube video in a new window and then click to return to Shady's Place. I needed to do that on song #1 - "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" (their biggest international hit) and song #4 - "Who's Gonna Rock You" because they are the highest quality videos of those two songs on YouTube, but the uploader did not enable them to be embedded on other sites. My goal here at Shady's Place is to offer the finest quality video and sound for every song I post, and therefore you will occasionally need to put up with this minor hassle. I tell you all this to make sure you have the opportunity to watch those two song performances along with the others that are set-up the usual way.

I'm pleased that you join others in offering a favorable review of Bernie's mid 2000s cover of the ABBA hit 'Winner Takes It All." Hers is one of the greatest ABBA covers I've ever seen or heard. Yessum, I see similarities between Bernie and Princess Di. Thanks for mentioning that.

Thank you again for your prompt visit and comment. Before I forget, I highly recommend the black comedy film that inspired the title of this post: Weekend At Bernie's. It's a hoot. I also recommend that you watch my hostess with the mostest - news babe Taylor Kelly - on the hit police, fire and rescue action TV series 9-1-1 which stars the highly regarded Angela Bassett. Yessum, when it is time for peeps in the U.S. to salivate Thanksgiving next month, I will do what I always do and that is to give thanks for kind and supportive friends like you. Please shower my buddy Harley with smooches and have a wonderful week, dear friend BB!

  7. Hi Shady,

The Nolan Sisters are new to me too! I dig their sound and they almost remind me a bit of Kelly Marie's "Feels Like I Am In Love". I'll have to e-mail my Irish cousins and see if they ever listened to the Nolan Sisters. That's a shame about Bernie's untimely death.

I hope that you have a wonderful week, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for attending the Nolan Sisters concert, dear friend! I'm glad you be diggin' the sound of roving I-Team reporter Taylor's featured act, a sister group from Ireland that rose to fame in London and wowed audiences in the UK, Europe, Australia and Japan, but remained unknown to most Americans. So unfair that we weren't exposed to them and their marvelous music!

You have added the name of another artist and another song with similarities to The Nolans. As I might have told you, I was a freelance DJ in the 70s and early 80s. One of the platters I played at parties was the 12-inch extended dance version of "Feels Like I'm in Love" by Scottish disco/Hi-NRG singer Kelly Marie. I distinctly remember shopping for and finding the dance record at a store in downtown Lancaster, PA. Now that you mention it, a couple of the Nolans' disco-flavored pop hits do sound like Kelly Marie's clubworthy signature song.

Yessum, please let me know if your Irish cousins remember the singing Nolan Family, billed as Ireland's First Family of Music.

It is indeed a shame that the music world lost Bernie Nolan to cancer when she still had so much to offer. I get a lump in my throat watching Bernie perform in these videos knowing as I do that her life was tragically cut short by the big C.

Thanks again for checking out reporter Taylor Kelly's special I-Team report on this great sister act, The Nolans... the best girl group you NEVER heard. Have a terrific week, dear friend JM!

I am eager to find out if your cousins know about The Nolans. Perhaps cousin Bernie was named after the sister group's late lead singer.

  8. Hi Shady, I love hearing women's groups. The Nolans are exceptional, and I couldn't help but think Ed Sullivan should have had them on his show. I'm sure they would have taken off in the States. The way Bernie sang, "The Winner Takes It All," showcases her fantastic voice. I think I liked best, "Gotta Pull Myself Together," "Don't Love Me Too Hard," and "Chemistry," of the group's songs. It was fun to get to see and hear them. I'm sorry for Bernice and her family. Thank you for sharing her and her sisters with us.

    1. Hi, Belle!

Thanks for joining me for this special salute to The Nolans, dear friend! I'm delighted that you came down from Canada to attend the concert. As you noticed, I saved you a front row seat.

Yessum, if you read some of my other replies to comments on this post, you'll notice that I keep wondering why North American radio listeners, concert audiences and record buyers were not exposed to the wonderful look, sound and songs of The Nolans. It doesn't make sense to me, because they were so big, so popular, in the UK, across Europe, in Australia and in Japan, where they were practically worshipped, becoming the first European act to win the Tokyo Music Festival. Why then weren't the girls' hit records released in the U.S. and Canada? Why weren't they given an opportunity to appear on Ed Sullivan, as you suggested, or American Bandstand, The Midnight Special or Solid Gold? They might even have been a good fit for The Lawrence Welk Show which ran until 1982 in first run syndication. As you recall, Welk began introducing pop music acts in later seasons, and The Nolans might have reminded his audience of The Lennon Sisters who for years had been a major attraction on the show.

Thanks for letting me know that you enjoyed that remix music video of The Nolans performing "Gotta Pull Myself Together," and that your other favorites include "Don't Love Me Too Hard" and "Chemistry." On "Chemistry," you see and hear Coleen Nolan (dressed in blue), the youngest of the sisters, singing lead. If you listen again to the beginning of "Chemistry," you might agree that it sounds like the intro to "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," the 1976 disco hit by KC and The Sunshine Band. On the song that follows, another of your favorites, the official music video for "Don't Love Me Too Hard," the sisters take turns on lead. It's simply delightful. In fact, I have never before experienced with any other artist with the exception of The Beatles, the type of reaction I had when first listening to each of these songs by The Nolans. I liked every one of them instantly, and now they are all familiar to me and play in my mind frequently, entertaining me throughout the way. Consider this post a collection of their greatest hits because they are all first rate songs and great live performances.

I'm so glad you appreciate Bernie's vocal talent and enjoyed her wonderful rendition of "The Winner Takes It All." Bernie had a gift that went beyond the power and quality of her voice. She made a real connection with the audience and knew how to sell a song without going overboard. Bernie's illness and untimely death shocked and saddened millions of fans who absolutely adored her and her singing sisters.

Thank you again for joining me (and TV news reporter Taylor Kelly of 9-1-1) for this special report, a salute to the best girl group you never heard - The Nolan Sisters. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Belle. My next post starts Saturday and I "predict" that you will enjoy it. You'll find out exactly what "predict" means when you stop by. God bless!

  9. Hi Shady! I hope it's not too late to comment on this really nice post with such a talented family group. Very sad that the lead singer passed away from breast cancer and very fitting to recognize and give tribute to her this month which is breast cancer awareness month. Those gals were very talented and I thought they could do country music when I listened to "Attention to Me". I thought Bernie sounded a little like Dolly! Maybe that's just me but I enjoyed all the songs. I often wonder how one family can house so much talent...like the Osmonds, Jacksons, and other groups that made it big. It's too bad we only heard about these talented and beautiful women here but thanks for finding them and sharing their story. Sorry I'm so late but just catching up on my crazy weekend then working until today. Have a good week and I hope things in Florida are getting back to normal. Take care Shady!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks so much for being here, dear friend! Welcome to Shady's concert hall where The Nolans, the fabulous singing sisters from Ireland, transplanted to England, are gracing the stage and putting on quite a show.

The Nolans are an act that I discovered only a few weeks ago, and couldn't believe I never heard of them. As I rushed this post into production and got it on the schedule, I wasn't even aware that this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is indeed fitting that I'm running this tribute now for that reason and because October 17 is Bernie's birthday. She would have turned 62 this year, but sadly it was not to be.

Yessum, I'm glad you singled out the Nolans number "Attention To Me." You seem to agree with my assessment that it sounds like the kind of spirited, countrified-pop song that Dolly Parton or Reba McEntire might sing.

If you read my other replies you saw that I keep questioning why the recordings of the enormously popular Nolans were not released in North America. It makes no sense to me. They would have been very successful on tour as well, because they were an attractive group and sang and moved around the stage in perfect harmony.

I know you are a working girl, YaYa. I understand that your time is limited, and that makes me all the more thankful when you can stop by. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the show.

Yessum, we are back to normal here in Florida and hoping to run out the clock on the long 2022 hurricane season. We are gradually getting past the peak of the season, and have an early cold front heading our way which should help cool the Gulf water a little and make it harder for any incoming storms to strengthen. I am still thinking about your loved ones to my southwest who were hit so hard. I hope their lives will soon get back on a even keel.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend YaYa!

  10. It's so sad that so many of the sister's got breast cancer. My grandma had it and beat it. My aunt had it and she didn't make it.

I've never heard of The Nolan's but they could definitely sing.

    1. Hi, Mary!

I'm happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming through the gate to attend this special concert by The Nolans and see and hear them perform their greatest hits, none of which are known to most Americans. Can you say Unsolved Mystery?

Yessum, breast cancer spread to three of the Nolan sisters. Unless I missed an update, two of them beat it and are still in remission in 2022. I'm glad to know that your grandma is or was a cancer survivor, but sorry to learn that your aunt came down with it and shared the same fate as Bernie Nolan.

I'm pleased that you recognize the singing talent of this Irish-English sister group. Thanks again for coming, and stay tuned for my next post which starts tamale morning. Have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Mary!
