The Rat Pack is Back!

The jukebox in the
Shady Dell's dance hall
was filled with the greatest, most danceworthy
records to be found anywhere. At the Dell, you
heard sounds that you didn't hear anyplace else.
The mix of music that played nightly at the Dell
was consistently better than the stuff I heard on
the radio. In the mid 60s the Dell's music menu
included soul coming out of Detroit, Chicago,
New York and Philadelphia, blue-eyed soul,
southern R&B from Memphis, British Beat,
garage rock, psychedelic rock, folk-rock
and doo-wop classics from the 50s
that remained Jukebox Giants.

Shady Dell regulars, the gang I refer to
as The Rodentia Intelligentsia, prided
themselves on having radar for cool.
Year after year they discovered and
popularized songs that radio stations
overlooked. Records that lingered
near the bottom of the Billboard
chart or missed it entirely became
cherished classics at the Dell.
Forgotten flips were elevated
to mega-hit status by Dell rats
unfettered by the limitations
of radio play lists.

Today I'd like you to meet four teenagers - imaginary members
of the 60s Rat Pack. They represent my gang of friends,
the Dell rats, kids like me who made the Shady Dell
their home away from home.

THE RAT PACK

(LEFT to RIGHT)

JULIE

PETE

LINDA

DOUG

Yes, The Rat Pack is back, and they are here today to play the authentic sounds
we loved to listen and dance to at the Dell in the 60s. The old jukebox is hungry
for coins and the Rat Packers are eager to get dancing, so let the music play!

 SAM AND DAVE

JULIE: I like Stax/Memphis R&B, and my
first pick is J-6... soul men Sam and Dave
aka "Double Dynamite," "The Sultans of
Sweat" and "The Dynamic Duo." They've
got the song ranked #32 on Shady's list of
The 200 Greatest Hits of The Shady Dell,
the follow-up to their big hit "Hold On!
I'm A Comin'".. a Stax sizzler called--
"Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody!"

DELL SONG #32

"Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody" - Sam And Dave
 (Oct./Nov. 1966, highest chart pos. #8 R&B,
 #64 Hot 100/#81 Cash Box

 THE
 ISLEY BROS.

JULIE: I also love Motown, and while
I'm in control of the box, I'm punching
E-3, the song ranked #17 on the Dell
Hits survey. It's The Isley Bros. with
the single reeleased on the heels of
their Tamla label hit "This Old
Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)."
I like this one as much, maybe more
- "Take Some Time Out For Love!"

DELL SONG #17

"Take Some Time Out For Love" - The Isley Brothers
(June 1966, highest chart pos. #66 Hot 100/#72 Cash Box

 JR. WALKER
 AND THE
 ALL STARS

PETE: I want mo Motown, mo Motown,
mo Motown, and that's why I'm pressing
K-13... the song holding the #46 spot on
the Dell Top 200. It's singer and sax man
Jr. Walker and his All Stars with another
great sound from '66...  a song written
by Holland–Dozier–Holland. Check
it out-- "(I'm A) Road Runner!"

DELL SONG #46

"(I'm A) Road Runner" - Jr. Walker And The All Stars
 (May/June 1966, highest chart pos. #4 R&B,
 #20 Hot 100/#21 Cash Box

 THE
 MAGNIFICENT
 MEN

LINDA: I dropped my coin into the slot
and pushed B-7 because I want to hear
something by our hometown heroes,
The Magnificent Men, with members
from York and Harrisburg. This song
was released in January, 1967, as the
killer bee on the back side of the blue-
eyed soul band's Dell megahit "Stormy
Weather." This cool tune is called--
"Much Much More Of Your Love"

SHADY DELL "KILLER BEE"

"Much Much More Of Your Love" - The Magnificent Men
(Jan. 1967, B side of "Stormy Weather")

 THE
 EMPERORS

LINDA: I'm hogging the jukebox
a while longer and pressing V-2,
because I wanna spin a hot
record by another popular
local act - The Emperors,
the garage/funk band from
 Harrisburg. It's another fab
flip side - #62 on the Dell
Hits survey, The Emperors'
cookin' cover of "Searchin'"
- the 1957 chart-topper
by The Coasters.
DELL SONG #62

 "Searchin'" - The Emperors
(May 1967, B side of "Lookin' For My Baby")

 ERIC BURDON
 & THE ANIMALS

DOUG: The Animals are hotter at the
Dell than The Beatles and The Stones.
That's why I pressed H-12... #53 on
the Dell's Top Tunes survey... Eric
Burdon's semi-autobiographical
counterculture song, a smash hit
in Australia and big in the U.S.
and UK -- "When I Was Young!"

DELL SONG #53

"When I Was Young" - Eric Burdon & The Animals
(Apr./May 1967, highest chart pos. #15 Hot 100/#19 Cash Box

 MITCH RYDER
 AND THE
 DETROIT
 WHEELS

PETE: Here's another cool sound... G-4,
Mitch Ryder And the Detroit Wheels at
#88 on The Greatest Hits of the Dell list
with a medley covering two hits from
1957 - Little Richard's "Jenny, Jenny"
and the Chuck Willis song "C.C. Rider."
Here's Mitch with-- "Jenny Take A Ride!"

I've got a yoka mata huba bakwa Juju Hand
This yoka mata huba bakwa sure is grand
Makes your eyes look red and your tongue turn green
The yoka mata huba bakwa makes you scream

Shucks, if I were in a restaurant and heard Sam at the next
table yammering that mumbo jumbo... I'd grab the waiter
and say "I'll have what he's having!" (BA-DUM-BUMP)

In the lead-off spot, boasting about the magical power of his "Ju Ju Hand,"
that was Dallas rock & roller Sam The Sham along with his band of Pharaohs.
They're the wild and crazy guys who scored a top 3 hit with "Wooly Bully."
"Ju Ju Hand," their follow-up single that same year, 1965, didn't do as
well on the chart, just making it into the top 30.

A Dr. Donald D. Rosey good morning to you! I'm
Dr. Don Rose from Quixie in Dixie, WQXI Atlanta,
along with my pet canary Lulu-Belle (MOOOOO!)
welcoming you to my first official radio show on
sister station S-P-M-M, the authentic sound of
top 40 radio in the 60s. The songs I play will
make your ears smile, and the videos you'll
watch on my YouTube simulcast will let
you view the past thru Rose-Colored
Glasses and relive the halcyon days
of your youth. By the way, if anybody
knows what the devil a halcyon is,
give me a call. I'm pretty sure a halcyon
is the doodad doohickey gismo that
fits on the end of a whatchamacallit
thingamajig. (BA-DUM-BUMP)

Now let's peer through our Rose-Colored glasses at the fall of 1966.
For nearly three years The Beatles and other Brit bands had been
dominating the chart in the states, but some American artists
survived the onslaught and successfully competed with the
long hairs from across the pond.  Among them were these
cool cats from Boise, Idaho, and later Portland, Oregon.

As the story goes, patriot Paul Revere shouted "The British are coming!
The British are coming!... but my band  of Raiders can and will fight back
against the Invasion." That they did. 1966 was The Raiders breakthrough
year - 5 hit singles in a row - and I've got one of them on my turntable.
Here they are, the clown princes of pop rock, singing the red, white
and blues about another problem-- "The Great Airplane Strike!"

The sound of the electric sitar allows Boomers to name that tune in 2 seconds flat.
A top 5 hit across the land at Christmas 1968 and on into the winter of '69, that
was B.J. Thomas and "Hooked On A Feeling," a song covered five years later
by the Swedish rock band Blue Swede, the guys who added the creepy chant
"Ooga-Chaka-Ooga-Ooga" to the song. "Ooga-Chaka-Ooga-Ooga" is the
sound I make in the bathroom after eating my wife's pot roast.

You just heard the falsetto of the late great
Larry Henley singing "Run, Baby Run" with
The Newbeats. The record stopped at #12 on
the U.S. chart in the fall of 1965 but reached

(cover of "Surfin' Bird" by The Trashmen

Dec. 1963/Jan. 1964, highest chart pos.
#4 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

That was my human (and I use the word loosely) Peter Griffin, kicking off
my first official radio show with "Bird Is The Word," a mind-numbing cover
of  "Surfin' Bird," a top 5 hit by The Trashmen. The song is a combination
of two earlier hits, "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's The Word,"
by the R&B group The Rivingtons. The Trashmen are remembered as
one of the leading landlocked Midwestern surf rock groups of the 60s.

Hello, everybody! I'm Brian Griffin from Family Guy, pleased as punch to
have landed a gig as a Shady Bunch DJ here on S-P-M-M Radio. I aim to fleas

Let's keep the ball rolling (into my open jaws) with another sound

"Five O'Clock World" - The Vogues
(Dec. 1965/Jan. 1966, highest chart pos. #3 Cash Box,

Arguably the greatest opening sequence in television history, that was
the fantastic music video created for The Drew Carey Show with the cast
doing a nifty choreographed dance production to "Five O'Clock World."
The song was a top 5 hit for The Vogues, a group from Turtle Creek,
PA, near Pittsburgh. (I once took a tinkle in Turtle Creek.) Hey it's
five o'clock somewhere and I think I'll have me another martini.

That was Guyanese-British zinger and musician Eddy Grant ripping off my
"Eclectic Avenue" idea with a song called "Electric Avenue." Eddy's single
was one of the biggest hits of 1983, yet failed to reach #1 on the Billboard
chart. It spent 5 weeks at #2 bumping its head on songs that leapfrogged
over it to the top. "Electric Avenue" was held back from the #1 spot by
"Flashdance...What A Feeling," Irene Cara's theme from the hit movie,
and by "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. "Electric Avenue"
got the job done on Cash Box, reaching #1 for a single week.

That was Neil Diamond kicking-off this special blogcast with
his top 10 hit from 1967, "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon."

Hi, I'm Jimmy Berluti, an associate
at the Boston law firm of Donnell,
Young, Dole & Frutt on the hit
television series The Practice.

They call me Jimmy the Grunt
because I'm strictly a working class
stiff - no pretense, just a regular
guy practicing law, and I'm gonna
keep on practicing till I get it right.

I'm Patty Solis-Papagian,
a DUI lawyer and
real estate agent who
works with Santa Monica
attorney Billy McBride
(who bears a striking
resemblance to
Billy Bob Thornton)
on the hit television
series Goliath.

And I'm Kim Wexler, a lawyer
who previously worked at HHM,
successful law firm based in
Albuquerque, NM. Currently I
am sharing office space with
"Slippin' Jimmy" McGill aka
Saul Goodman, a small-time
lawyer on the hit TV series
Better Call Saul, a spin-off
of Breaking Bad.

Patty and Kim are good kids, nice girls.
Patty was my mother's name. So was Kim.
The three of us are here today to bring you
the exciting news that, starting next year,
we will be joining Shady Del Knight's
entertainment company The Shady Bunch
and hosting our own radio show here on
S-P-M-M.  It's called Plan B (Soft)
and today we have a preview.

As experienced lawyers, Patty, Kim and I make a formidable dream team.
We lay down the law, mount a rigorous defense. Remember our slogan:
"Your problems will be little 'cause we always win acquittal." Now I can
hear some of you asking, "What exactly do you mean by Plan B (Soft)?"
"Plan B" is where we create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors
that our client is guilty. We do that by pointing the finger at somebody
else and suggesting they did the crime. In today's test case Kim, Patty
and I intend to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, in fact, beyond a
shadow of a doubt, that there is no better radio show anywhere
than the one we will be hosting on S-P-M-M. As you will see
and hear... the evidence is overwhelming and irrefutable.

Now meet our client, Eva (below)... a 1950s teenager.

Eva's a good kid, a nice girl. Eva was my mother's name.
Eva came to us for help, informing us that she got
tangled up with a bad crowd and was arrested
for stealing hubcaps. We will argue that it is
her boyfriend Johnny's fault, not hers.

The defense will show that Johnny is a sketchy character in the truest sense,
a juvenile delinquent with a rap sheet a mile long, a bad apple, rotten to the core,
and that he was a bad influence on our client. We intend to prove that Johnny,
for the purpose of his own self gain, deliberately, wantonly, and with
malice aforethought, initiated our client into the seedy
gangland world of criminal mischief.

(Oct. thru Dec. 1963, highest chart pos. #5 Hot 100/#6 Cash Box)

Our closing argument is this, ladies and gentlemen
of the jury. Our client, Eva, is a nice girl from a
good family who fell under the spell of a dope
peddling, hubcap stealing gangster, a Svengali
who controlled her, manipulated her, made her
do his bidding and ran her afoul of the law.
It wasn't our client's fault, plain and simple,
and therefore you must find her "not guilty."

The defense rests. It is our contention
that this is an open and shut case but,
ultimately, it is you who must decide.
You the people are the judge and jury.

Regardless of the verdict, we hope you'll
join us in 2021 when we return with the
official debut of our new show, Plan B (Soft),
right here on S-P-M-M, the station that's
number one for music and fun.
