This yoka mata huba bakwa sure is grand

that was Dallas rock & roller Sam The Sham along with his band of Pharaohs.
They're the wild and crazy guys who scored a top 3 hit with "Wooly Bully."
"Ju Ju Hand," their follow-up single that same year, 1965, didn't do as
well on the chart, just making it into the top 30.

A Dr. Donald D. Rosey good morning to you! I'm
Dr. Don Rose from Quixie in Dixie, WQXI Atlanta,
along with my pet canary Lulu-Belle (MOOOOO!)
welcoming you to my first official radio show on
sister station S-P-M-M, the authentic sound of
top 40 radio in the 60s. The songs I play will
make your ears smile, and the videos you'll
watch on my YouTube simulcast will let
you view the past thru Rose-Colored
Glasses and relive the halcyon days
of your youth. By the way, if anybody
knows what the devil a halcyon is,
give me a call. I'm pretty sure a halcyon
is the doodad doohickey gismo that

Now let's peer through our Rose-Colored glasses at the fall of 1966.
For nearly three years The Beatles and other Brit bands had been
dominating the chart in the states, but some American artists
survived the onslaught and successfully competed with the
long hairs from across the pond.  Among them were these
cool cats from Boise, Idaho, and later Portland, Oregon.

As the story goes, patriot Paul Revere shouted "The British are coming!
The British are coming!... but my band  of Raiders can and will fight back
against the Invasion." That they did. 1966 was The Raiders breakthrough
year - 5 hit singles in a row - and I've got one of them on my turntable.
Here they are, the clown princes of pop rock, singing the red, white
and blues about another problem-- "The Great Airplane Strike!"

A top 5 hit across the land at Christmas 1968 and on into the winter of '69, that
was B.J. Thomas and "Hooked On A Feeling," a song covered five years later
by the Swedish rock band Blue Swede, the guys who added the creepy chant
"Ooga-Chaka-Ooga-Ooga" to the song. "Ooga-Chaka-Ooga-Ooga" is the

    1. Hi Alex!

Thanks for coming and congratulations, good buddy. You captured the Early Bird trophy again this week! Your mantle must be filled with them by now. :)

Yes indeed, Dr. Don Rose is in the house. DJ Don was known for his puns and corny jokes. That artwork showing PR&R in their costumes is actually on a 45 rpm picture sleeve for the song featured in this post, "The Great Airplane Strike," which was released in September 1966 and reappeared two months later on The Raiders' album The Spirit of '67. That long-play yielded two more hit singles, "Hungry" and "Good Thing," both used in the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, plus the baroque, Beatlesque "Undecided Man," the B side of the "Good Thing" single that seems inspired by "Eleanor Rigby."

Thanks again for coming, good buddy Alex!

  2. Well, you've given me some new-to-me artists along with some not-the-song-I-associate-them-with songs from others. (plus one I-didn't-know-he-recorded-that-first! song)

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for coming over on day one, dear friend. You finished 2nd in the Early Bird Derby and take home the Silver Medal! :)

Seems you learned as you listened today. I'm happy to know you discovered new artists, matched song titles with artist names and found out who first recorded one of the songs.

I'm glad Don Rose had you groaning with his homespun humor, especially on the intro to The Chandelier Song - "Hooked On A Ceiling." :)

Thanks again for making time for a visit and for your kind comment, dear friend Kelly!

  3. Hey there friend Shady. Hope all is well in your corner of the world. I believe Dr. Don Rose was out here in SF for some years too and oh my goodness what a crush I had on Mark Lindsay. Even had his pictures up on the bedroom wall. I'm sorry but my pandemic brain had me seeing stacked up rolls of toilet paper behind B.J. Thomas as he was singing "Hooked on a Feeling."

We are surviving here so far. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and it will most likely just be the 5 Miles plus Benny in attendance. Hubby just got back from a trip to Oregon and we had him take a test to make sure that our oldest could come over to spend the day with us. Waiting for those results, although he feels fine and we are just really doing it as a peace of mind thing.

Wishing you and yours a happy Thanksgiving too. Blogging friends like you are what I am thankful for this year especially!

    1. Hi, Janet!

I'm excited to see you, dear West Coast friend! Thanks for tuning in to the first official SPMM radio show of Dr. Don Rose, my favorite DJ on the Cruisin' record album series released circa 1970. Yessum, Don did a stint at "Quixie in Dixie" - WQXI Atlanta, the show immortalized in the Cruisin' series. He also worked closer to where Shady grew up - WFIL in Philadelphia. Don was also a voice-over announcer on WKBS-TV in Philly. I used to hear his voice in the late afternoon tagging out of Speed Racer. Don then went out West and did the Morning Zoo format at KFRC in San Francisco - voted "Station of the Year" four times by Billboard Magazine. Wiki goes on to say that Don Rose "was considered by many to be the king of radio in the Bay Area." Sadly Don was in poor health much of his life and is no longer with us.

You aren't the only young women who had a crush on Mark Lindsay of The Raiders. Just about every female I have ever known says the same thing. Occasionally I get mobbed at the mall by women who mistake me for Mark. :)

Ha! Good one, Janet. That does look like a wall of toilet paper behind B.J. Thomas. I think the ladder was placed there as a prop to go along with the theme of The Chandelier Song - "Hooked On A Ceiling." :)

You are wise for urging your hubby to get tested after an out of state trip. I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that he tests negative. I am sure your smaller than usual family gathering for Thanksgiving will be filled with good food and good spirits, especially now that we have the election behind us... sort of. On my side of the screen, we needed to cancel our plans to have upwards of 20 people come to our house for T-giving. As it now stands it will only be three of us. The others will be here in spirit.

Well, thank you very much for those kind words, Janet! Reaching out to each other this past year has been a blessing for both of us. I am just as thankful as you are. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, dear friend Janet!

  4. I could have sworn one of those dancers behind Roger Miller was Goldie Hawn, so I first googled "Goldie Hawn"/"Roger Miller", and then "Goldie Hawn"/"England Swings", and, finally, in desperation, "Goldie Hawn"/"The Big T.N.T. Show" and came up squat. Oh, well, I suppose if it had been Goldie, either you or Don Rose would have told me in advance.

So often in this section I write this song was a hit or that song was a hit. Well, I was going to write that again today when I realized, according to Cash Box, most of these songs WERE hits. I guess I need some other definition of "hit song" other than one I've heard before, huh? Well, I DID hear B.J. Thomas' "Hooked on a Feeling" before, so I guess that a hit to the power of ten.

My favorite this time was "Run, Baby, Run", but then I have a weakness for falsettos. It's why I prefer '70s Bee Gees to '60s Bee Gees.

As for the Paul Revere and the Raiders song, it reminds me of that old Buddy Hackett routine about ordering from a Chinese restaurant.

If either you or I don't post again--for my part, I honestly can't tell you--then Happy Thanksgiving.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

It's nice of you to report for duty so early, good buddy. I appreciate it!

You got me curious about the dancers behind Roger Miller. I clicked to enlarge the video, played it in slow motion and studied faces of the women on freeze frames. I thought I might see Toni Basil or Teri Garr, but I don't think so. I wish I knew where and when that performance was recorded. Roger had his own TV show in 1966 and 1967 - The Roger Miller Show - but I read that it was taped in color. In 1966 Roger performed "England Swings" on The Big T.N.T. Show (a live to tape show similar to the T.A.M.I. Show). He also sang the song on a 1967 episode of The Danny Kaye Show. The person who produced this sync edit video replaced the weaker original live audio with the remastered original studio recording, and did a fine job of it.

I try to pick a diverse batch of recordings for these radio blogcasts, songs you might not have heard in a long time, maybe never before. To me the lower charting "minor hits' are often better and more exciting discoveries than the #1 charting million sellers with which we are all familiar.

Pardon me for correcting you, Kirk. The correct title of the B.J. Thomas Chandelier Song is "Hooked On A Ceiling." :) I share your appreciation for falsettos. The Newbeats, 4 Seasons and Dick & Dee Dee are favorites.

I'm not posting again until Saturday so, just in case I don't see you until then, I wish you a happy Thanksgiving as well. Thanks again for joining the fun with Dr. Donald D. Rose, good buddy Kirk!

  5. Tom,

Good morning, my friend! I can honestly say the only song in your line up I know is "Hooked On A Feelin'". Most of your artists I kinda remember after listening to your song selections but I can't say I recall the songs. Sometimes they sound a little familiar but I think I'm stretching my imagination. I loved sampling the great sounds of the 60s, the years in which I was a little girl. Thanks for enlightening my ears this morning as I get ready to head out the door with my appointment with my doc. Have a boogietastic week and I hope y'all have a wonderful Thanksgiving, my friend.

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for coming over dark and early and setting your dial to SPMM for the first official radio show presented on this station by one of my favorite top 40 deejays - Dr. Donald D. Rose! Seems you had fun viewing the past through his Rose-Colored Glasses.

Since you are considerably younger than Shady, I'm wondering if you are more familiar with the cover of "Hooked On A Feeling" recorded in the 70s by Blue Swede. "HOAF" is my favorite B.J. Thomas recording and I was delighted to find this remastered and restored performance clip for Don's first show.

I hope your doctor appointment goes well and leaves you worry free as you head into the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Thanks again for coming by to learn new songs and listen to others that you might not have heard in decades. That's what Shady's Place is all about.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, dear friend Cathy!

    2. Tom,

I do remember Blue Swede's cover but I also remember BJ Thomas. I think when I was little I preferred the cover to BJ's and to this day I still prefer the cover. It has more of vibe that makes me wanna dance. Both are classics. You can't go wrong listening to either one.

My appointment went well and the doctor didn't see anything suspicious. He did some routine biopsies, though. I won't have the results for a few days yet but I'm confident the report will be good. I appreciate your thoughts and prayers. I hope you and Mrs. Shady had a lovely Thanksgivings. Ours was quiet and nice. We'll continue to eat on left-overs all weekend and into next week no doubt which is fine. I love left-overs! I can't recall I told you but we're doing another vacation but I have posts scheduled and I'll be MIA for a week this time. Stop by for a visit anytime you want. Have a good weekend and I'll see ya around the cyberblock, my friend!

    3. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for the return visit, dear friend! I'm happy to know you are familiar with both versions of "Hooked On A Feeling." Given that I am 13 years older than you, my teenage memories are associated with the version by B.J. and that's the one I prefer. However I do enjoy the Blue Swede cover as well.

I will continue to think about you and hope for a worry free outcome when the tests come back. Yessum, Mrs. Shady made quite a feast for the three of us including a pumpkin pie and a pie with three different fruits in it. They are delicious. Like you and DH, we will be "fressing" on leftovers for days to come.

Thanks again for dropping by and have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Cathy!

They still play him often on The Willie Nelson, Series xm channel and he still touches me and makes me smile. 1. Hi, Arleen!

A Dr. Donald D. Rosey good morning to you, dear friend! Thanks for tuning in as DJ Don brings you his first official show on SPMM Retrosonic Radio.

Thanks for being the first to bring up Louisiana-born R&B soul great Joe Simon. I don't think he gets as much credit as he deserves and his recordings aren't played very often in the 21st century. Here at Shady's Place I try to give credit where it is due and play great vintage sounds that some people haven't heard in eons and many others never heard before.

Yessum, you can't roller skate in a buffalo herd, but you can be happy if you've a mind to. My folks bought me Roger Miller's King Of The Road album for my 16th birthday along with my first real stereo record player on which to listen to it. Their intent was to steer me away from rock & roll and toward "good music," hopefully all the way to big band sounds of the Swing Era. At first I was disappointed that they forced Roger Miller on me. (I had been hoping for Beatles or Animals records.) However, the more I listened to the album, the more I enjoyed Roger's witty ditties and his singing style. King Of The Road became one of my favorite albums.

Yessum, on those closeups of B.J. Thomas, you can plainly see his handsome chiseled facial features and piercing eyes. He was quite a handsome guy. Billy Joe is now age 78.

You're right. The stage name Domingo "Sam" Samudio picked for his band, their costumes and the lyrics to some of their novelty rock & roll songs would not be considered PC by today's standards.

I am so pleased to see you today, Arleen. I hope you are breathing a little easier day by day and keeping your chin up for better days ahead in 2021. Thank you again for your visit and delightful comment, dear friend, and have a nice Thanksgiving!

  8. Hi Dr. Rose! I used to wear rose colored glasses before my eyes got so bad, and now I have to wear prescription glasses. But I still enjoy the music and you put on a good show!

Sam The Sham and the Phararohs are so cool! Sometimes Sam visits my radio station, which is out of Dallas, and the DJ's talk and laugh with him about his career, and how much fun he is. "Ju Ju Hand" is a quirky song, but I enjoyed hearing the group today. "Wooly Bully" was so popular, and always a fun song to dance with at the dance clubs!

Five hit singles in a row is fantastic for Paul Revere and The Raiders...I like a lot of their music. I actually don't remember "The Great Airplane Strike", but I am always up for a cool new tune by a favorite group.

The Newbeats "Bread and Butter" was pretty cool, and I vaguely remember "Run Baby Run", and like the song. It sounds a lot like a late 50's pop song.

These songs are all pretty good, especially B.J. Thomas with his cool vocals. "Hooked on A Feeling" got a lot of air time and was kind of like a comfort food, and telling a good story.

Roger Miller and Joe Simon performed good also...I hadn't heard Joe Simon and "You Keep Me Hangin On" before.

And, the best for last...Joe Jeffrey, Oh my Gosh! "My Pledge of Love" came along when I was actually in love with someone, who didn't totally return the feelings. And, I don't know why, but I guess it would have been nice to hear these words from someone who loves and thinks about you. The song doesn't make me sad when I hear it, but I love the beat and the tone of his voice. Karo hadn't heard the song until I introduced it to him, and he worked on singing and recording it for me. Thank you for playing this one!

Great post guys! Good song choices. I guess you are getting ready for Thanksgiving Day! Me too...we will be home for the day, Rusty will help cook dinner, and we will take a few plates to some of the neighbors, who like us, don't have much family, and CAN'T cook, LOL!

Have a safe holiday, dear friend Shady and Mrs. Shady!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

How's it going over there in DFW, dear friend? Thanks for coming by to check out Dr. Don Rose's first radio show (for realsies) on SPMM!

I'm pretty sure Dr. Don's Rose-Colored Glasses will fit right over your prescription glasses, giving you 20-20 vision plus a rosy view of the musical past. Thanks for letting me know that you occasionally hear Sam The Sham on your local radio station, dropping in as a guest to chat about his life and career. I imagine he has some colorful stories to share. "Wooly Bully" is the record that was so good, so cool, that I literally got out of my sick bed and begged my dad to take me to the discount store to buy it. I simply couldn't wait until I felt better! I guess you could say I was in the grip of vinyl fever, and only Sam's Pharaohs had the cure.

It fascinates me when you report that you missed some of the hits that I take for granted. That Raiders single "The Great Airplane Strike," which peaked between #15 and #20 on the national pop charts, was released on the 19th of September, 1966, sandwiched between two of their biggest hits "Hungry" and "Good Thing." "Airplane Strike" was big in my neck of the woods and I remember my buddies singing along to it at The Dell.

"Run Baby Run" was one of the hot hits on the radio during my earliest months as Dell rat. I saw The Newbeats perform it (a lip sync performance) on The Lloyd Thaxton Show, a TV dance program I watched regularly. I liked the group and the song so much that I immediately bought the single. I can't remember the record being played at the Dell, but it played often on my stereo.

As you can tell, I have specific memories linked to most of these songs. "Hooked On A Feeling" was popular during my sophomore year of college. I met a girl at a party around that time and she insisted that I looked and sounded exactly like Dustin Hoffman's Benjamin character in The Graduate. If that turned her on, I wasn't about to argue with her. :)

That Joe Simon number is one of the smoothest soul sounds ever, and an example of the laid-back style of soul that was coming out of Nashville at the time. I'm excited that you singled out The Joe Jeffrey Group because they're tops in my book, too. Thank goodness I found that enhanced version with extra instrumental layers added to the mix. Now the record pops more so than ever before. I'm sorry the song brings back bittersweet memories of unrequited love. It all worked out because you and Karo got together.

You are a good citizen and neighbor for cooking extra food to share with those less fortunate on Thanksgiving. Let the spirit of goodness and giving fill you up. I hope everyone takes necessary mask and distancing precautions and has a safe holiday. I'll be thinking about you and master Scootie. In the days afterward, while you are still eating leftovers, come over and join me for my next post. I'll be introducing four new characters who will play Dell oldies on the old dance hall jukebox. That post begins Saturday. Until then, stay safe and once again have a wonderful Thanksgiving, dear friend Suzanne!

    2. I saw Sam The Sham at a Hershey Park concert a few years back. Of course he did the hits, but thrilled the audience with a long solo playing an acoustic guitar. He was great and I did not expect that kind of talent from his recordings that were hits. He could really play and seemed to be thrilled to be performing at his age.

    3. Hi, Jerre!

Thanks for putting your ear to the loudspeaker and listening to the first official blogcast of Dr. Don Rose here at Shady's Place!

Thanks for sharing that anecdote about Sam The Sham. I'll bet you weren't the only member of the Hershey Park audience who was surprised by his serious musicianship. What an interesting life he had. Wiki sez Sam had two different lineups of Pharaohs and in late 1966 added a trio of girls to the act and toured Asia as Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs and The Shamettes. Also according to Wiki, after "leaving" the music biz Sam worked in Mexico as an interpreter and as a mate on small commercial boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Later he became a motivational speaker and poet.

I'm still learning to wave bye-bye.

Thanks again for joining the fun, good buddy Jerre, and happy Thanksgiving!

  10. I knew the Hooked on a Feeling and it was nice to hear it without that weird chant. I had no idea it was Swedes who thought of that chant...Swedes but then even ABBA made the King Kong Song. I enjoyed listening to the tunes and watching those funky Go-Go dancers dance in a wonky way.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for coming all the way down from Canada, dear friend. Shady welcomes you, and Dr. Donald D. Rose welcomes you!

Gosh, you must have a Swede tooth, dearie, because you really have a thorough knowledge of the ABBA catalog. Here all this time I considered myself one of the Swedish pop super group's biggest fans. Actually, I just look at the pictures (BA-DUM-BUMP). Turns out I made it through all these years without ever hearing or even knowing about their "King Kong Song." I see that it was released near the start of their career on the 1974 album Waterloo. I bought the "Waterloo" single when it first came out but didn't buy the album. I just now listened to "King Kong Song." I have no desire to hear it again. :)

Yessum, it was Blue Swede that covered B.J.'s "Hooked On A Feeling" and added sounds that make me picture the boys in the band bent over toilets and heaving their supper.

I'm glad you appreciated the weird, perhaps British style, go-go dancing that went on in the background as country crooner Roger Miller sang one of his many hits "Inga Lynn Swings."

Thanks again for your cheery visit and comment, dear friend BB!

  11. I don't think WQXI is a station in Atlanta anymore. Very interesting to hear an old voice from the radio.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

    1. Hi, Sherry!

It's great to see you, dear friend. Thanks for coming by!

I was just thinking that as a Georgia resident should know better than others the latest scuttlebutt about Quixie in Dixie, WQXI Atlanta. I did some checking and discovered that after the Don Rose era the station adopted an oldies format, then went to adult standards, then sports talk as the flagship of the Atlanta Falcons and Ga. Tech Yellow Jackets. Later it became a full time ESPN station. In 2015 it went back to all music but soon after changed to a Radio Korea format.

I had a nice T-giving. Thank you. Hope you did, too. Thanks again for checking out Don Rose at the new home of his top 40 radio show - SPMM. Enjoy your weekend, dear friend Sherry!
