    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for taking the early bird spot again this week, good buddy!

I hope you remember and have watched a few of these lawyer series. Seems like you have been following the adventures of "Slippin' Jimmy" McGill on Better Call Saul. Mrs. Shady and I are all caught up on the Breaking Bad spin-off and eagerly awaiting season 6.

Thanks again for coming, good buddy Alex!

  2. Hi, Shady! I think you know I watch very little TV these days, but "back in the day" I watched Perry Mason, LA Law, and Night Court. They're totally different from each other, but equally entertaining! Seems like I remember "the Velvet Fog" appeared in several episodes of Night Court. ;)

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for coming over and taking a chance on winning a dream date with Shady, dear friend! Although you didn't actually pick three characters to qualify for the contest, I'm gonna throw your name in the hat and give you a shot at it anyway. :)

Thanks for reminding me about singer Mel Tormé's appearances on Night Court. Wikie sez: << Tormé made nine guest appearances as himself (and one as a guardian angel) on the 1980s situation comedy Night Court. The main character, Judge Harry Stone played by Harry Anderson, was depicted as an unabashed Tormé fan, an admiration that Anderson shared in real-life; he would deliver the eulogy at Tormé's funeral. >> Harry Anderson died a couple of years ago and cast member Selma Diamond died in the mid 80s.

Your "Velvet Fog" reference reminds me of WMEX/SPMM deejay Arnie Ginsburg. Arnie, nicknamed "Old Leather Lungs," was known for his raspy announcer voice. He recorded an ad jingle for Mal's, a popular Boston area men's clothing store. In the jingle, Arnie sings "I'm Arnie Ginsburg. They call me The Velvet Voice. I've heard better voices, but I haven't heard much woice." Sadly, I just this moment learned that Arnie died this past summer just shy of his 94th birthday. He will live on as a member of The Shady Bunch.

I'm also happy to know that you watched Perry Mason and LA Law back in the day. As you might have heard, a brand new Perry Mason series premiered this summer on HBO.

Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend Kelly!

  3. Having never watched any of the shows your contest is based on, I'm afraid I won't be able to enter. I remember all of these, but the only one I watched in any great amount was "Perry Mason." I used to watch it with Grandma Holton, who loved Raymond Burr and couldn't stand Monte Markham.

How about "Judd For The Defense"?

    1. Hi, John!

Thanks for dropping in, good buddy!

If you haven't yet checked out the three lawyer TV series involved in my exclusive "Win a Dream Date With Shady" contest, I highly recommend them. Better Call Saul was spun off from Breaking Bad and Boston Legal was spun off from The Practice, and anything starring Billy Bob Thornton has to be great, right?

As a kid growing up I watched Perry Mason every week. Later I followed Raymond Burr as Lt. Ironside. Let's not forget Burr's appearances in Rear Window and Godzilla: King of the Monsters! I agree with Mrs. Holton. Starting in the mid 60s and continuing 25 years or more, Monte Markham appeared in numerous movies and TV series including Love, American Style, Dallas and the series you mentioned The New Perry Mason. I simply got tired of seeing him pop up so often. Thanks for adding the late 60s series Judd For The Defense to my lawyer show list. I liked Carl Betz on The Donna Reed Show but for some reason never watched Judd.

Thanks again for swinging by, good buddy John!

  4. LOL friend Shady, much as I would love to win a vacation with you I'm afraid I can't enter your contest. I have not seen Better Call Saul or Goliath and I couldn't possibly pay for the trip should I win :). I do remember most of these shows and enjoyed reliving them with the intros you provided. Perry Mason was one of my all time faves but I also enjoyed LA Law and The Practice. The Good Wife looks interesting but I have never seen it. Thanks for the fun today.

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks for coming, dear friend! I'm delighted to see you.

It's a shame you needed to disqualify yourself from entering the contest and having a once in a lifetime opportunity to win a dream date with Shady. :) If you were a fan of Breaking Bad, then you will love the spin-off series Better Call Saul. If you like Billy Bob Thornton, you should check out Goliath. I'm glad you remember and watched Perry Mason, LA Law and The Practice. I also watched all three. The Good Wife is another excellent long running legal drama that Mrs. Shady and I watched from beginning to end and highly recommend.

I'm happy to know the post put an extra smile on your face. Here's hoping there are many more to come.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Janet!

  5. Around the world in 80 days, huh! Sounds like an old song/story to me Shady! And, I read the fine print, haha!

I have only watched a few of these shows, "Perry Mason" is my main man! I have only seen "Boston Legal" a few times, I think, because it wasn't in the right time slot, or I didn't have the right channel. I LOVED "Night Court"! All of the characters were fun and I missed the show when it went off the air.

So, even though I haven't seen the other shows you presented, I am familiar with some of the characters, and can at least make a guess at who your three new guest anchors will be. From "Goliath"...how about Billy Bob Thornton! "The Practice"...hmmm-I say, Camryn Manheim. Never heard of "Better Call Saul", but maybe Michael McKean?

There we have it, my three picks! Keeping my fingers crossed for my virtual around the world tour! Take care, and have a great weekend Shady!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for joining the fun and being the first to quality for the chance to win a dream date with Shady. Yessum, you and Shady will go "around the world in 80 days" (as long as you can pay all expenses.) I also lost a bundle playing the ponies and I need your help in that regard. :)

Everybody seems to be familiar with the old Perry Mason TV series. I watched it every week for years, plus Raymond Burr's other successful series Ironside. Did you know there is a new Perry Mason series this year on HBO? It stars Matthew Rhys who shot to fame a few years ago as one of the main characters in The Americans, a period spy thriller that I highly recommend.

I'm glad you are familiar with Night Court. I loved it, too, and was sad when Harry Anderson died a couple of years ago at the too young age of 65. Most recently Markie Post had a guest role on the horror-comedy web TV series Santa Clarita Diet.

I have recorded your three selections: Billy Bob T. as Billy McBride in Goliath, Camryn Manheim as Ellenor Frutt in The Practice, and Michael McKean as Chuck McGill in Better Call Saul. Stay tuned for next Tuesday's post at which time you will find out if you were the first to correctly name the three hosts of my new SPMM radio series. If you were, pack your bags, dearie, and get set to circumnavigate the globe with Shady! (I hope you have deep pockets because I love to spend $$$ in souvenir shops and casinos. :)

Thanks again for playing, dear friend Suzanne. I hope you and Scootie are doing well. Our weather is way too warm again and I look forward to the next cool down. Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend!

  6. Tom,

WOW, now that's a lot of law drama happening here! I'm familiar with many of these and a few we've watched. "Better Call Saul" is a good show. I can't wait for the new season. In some of your recent posts you've dangled teasers to some of these sparking a curiosity to watch the but haven't yet. I'll be sure to clue you in when I do. I think you'll have Jimmy McGill "Saul" hosting this new series. "Night Court" was a fun, zany 80s TV series. In the first season, a gal born in the same county as I was to star in this sitcom was Karen Austin. I noticed quickly looking over her appearance to discover she was in the movie "Jagged Edge", but of her stuff is on TV. Thanks for making me smile. You really know how to crank out great posts, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Welcome back over, dear friend! I'm happy that you decided to enter my contest in hopes of winning a dream date with Shady! :)

It's good to know that you are familiar with several of the shows mentioned in the post. I am especially pleased that you are watching and enjoying Better Call Saul. It's one of our favorites. I see that you picked Slippin' Jimmy as the character you think will host my new series, but to qualify for the contest you also need to select characters from The Practice and Goliath. Heck, since you are such a devoted friend, I think I'll bend the rules and throw your name in the hat along with Kelly's for a special drawing. Maybe... just maybe... you and she can accompany me and the actual contest winner on my trip around the world. :)

I'm also happy to learn that you are a fan of Night Court as are a few other readers and Mrs. Shady and me. Thanks for sharing that actress Karen Austin is from the same county where you were born. I looked her up on IMDB and was reminded that she played the role of Hillary Mishkin in the 1986 season of L.A. Law. While we're on the subject, I love the slasher horror movies that two of the other L.A. Law cast members went on to star in. You should appreciate this first example. Corbin Bernsen (Arnold Becker) starred as a deranged, sadistic tooth doctor in The Dentist and its sequel The Dentist 2: Brace Yourself. Larry Drake (Benny Stulwicz) was hilarious as the homicidal physician in Dr. Giggles. I have seen all three of those horror flicks and they are all a hoot.

Thank you again for your visit and great comment, dear friend Cathy. Have a nice Friday and a safe and happy weekend!

    2. Tom,

I couldn't offer my opinion on The Practice and Goliath since I haven't watched either of these series. Goliath has pecked my interest. I'm not sure when we'll get to it but I'd like to try it out, though. Have a shadytastic week, my friend!

    3. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for coming back over, dear friend!

Let's put it this way. If you like David E. Kelley TV series which include L.A. Law, Picket Fences, Chicago Hope, Ally McBeal and Boston Public, and if you like James Spader and Willian Shatner, then you will love The Practice and its spin-off Boston Legal. If you watched Fargo season 1 and like Billy Bob Thornton's character portrayals you will enjoy Goliath. Unlike the David E. Kelley series, Goliath is dark and mysterious.

Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Cathy!

  7. I do remember seeing snippets of that court tv show and Bull, the security guard ... while I was cooking supper, getting ready for work, checking on my cattle about to give birth, warming up the tractor in order to make a driveway out of the snow bound driveway ... things like that. Anyway ... Sending much love, cat.

    1. Hi, cat!

Thanks for coming down from Canada hoping to win a dream date with Shady, dear friend! (The contest judges say we can take Theo Thunderbutt along on our trip around the world). However, to fully qualify, you will need to pick three characters from the three legal dramas at the end of the post. If you don't watch those series and therefore cannot vote, then sit back and enjoy next Tuesday's post. You will meet the three new SPMM radio hosts and listen to their song selections. In a special preview of their new show, the trio will lay down the law and mount a rigorous defense in the neverending battle against boring elevator music.

Yessum, I well remember quirky character Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon on Night Court. Actor Richard Moll is still with us at age 77. It was nice of you to share memories of your earlier years that are linked to Night Court.

Thank you again for coming to see me at Shady's Place, dear friend cat. I wish you and TT a safe and happy weekend!

Thanks for returning to chat, dear friend! Although you and Shady might never get the opportunity to travel around the world together (I was looking forward to seeing Rattlesnake Gulch), nothing can stop us from imagining what it would be like. Whenever you enter the Shady universe, you should be prepared to suspend reality and exercise your imagination. It's fun and takes your mind off your worries and cares for a while.

I wish you health and happiness always as well, cat. Thank you again for being such a wonderful, faithful friend. Give some LUBBINS to my favorite kitty Theo and have a restful weekend up there in Alberta!

  8. I watched LA Law, Night Court, and Perry Mason (reruns) regularly. I watched Boston Legal and The Practice on occasion. I've heard of Better Get Saul but
have never seen it. As for The Young Lawyers, I vaguely remember the name but never watched it, either, and did not know Lee J. Cobb, an actor I quite liked, was in it. If it ever shows up on some digital channel, I'm going to have to make a point of watching it.

Here's two you didn't mention: Ally McBeal and Matlock.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

It's great to see you, good buddy. Thanks for coming!

It's good to know you were a regular viewer of a few of these lawyer shows and an occasional viewer of others. Please watch Better Call Saul if you can. Mrs. Shady and I highly recommend it. I also thank you for bringing up Lee J. Cobb, a fine character actor who isn't mentioned very often in the 21st century, but one who appeared in many movies and TV series I watched in the 20th century including the film-noir Call Northside 777, Lights Out, On The Waterfront, Man In The Gray Flannel Suit, 12 Angry Men, Three Faces Of Eve, Exodus, How The West Was Won, Come Blow Your Horn, Our Man Flint, The Virginian, Death Of A Salesman, In Like Flint and Coogan's Bluff. Like you I vaguely remember Cobb's The Young Lawyers but I was not a regular viewer. Thanks for mentioning Ally McBeal and Matlock, two more notable legal dramas. I can add Shark to the list.

Since you didn't name three characters, may I assume you are not interested in winning a dream date with Shady and afterward appearing with him on Love Connection? :)

Thanks again for your visit and comment, good buddy Kirk. Have a great weekend!

    3. Hi, Kirk!

Whenever someone mentions Justice Amy Coney Barrett, I am reminded of another legal drama that Mrs. Shady and I enjoyed called Judging Amy. It starred Amy Brenneman and Tyne Daly. I also wanted to mention the short-lived David E. Kelley lawyer show Girls Club starring Gretchen Mol, Kathleen Robertson of BH 90210 and Supergirl star Chyler Leigh. Then there was an early to mid 60s law series I watched entitled The Defenders. It starred E. G. Marshall and Robert Reed, the latter going on to forever fame as Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch. I should also mention all of the Law & Order series that have run over the years, plus some of my favorite legal ladies in various series: Barbara Alyn Woods as Diane Szalinski on Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show, Milena Govich in Conviction, Leah Pipes in The Deep End, Jenny Wade on The Good Guys and Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, Starling City attorney, on Arrow.

Thanks again for dropping by, good buddy Kirk!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

It's great to see you, dear friend! You're not late. You're right on time and I thank you for dropping by.

It's interesting that my two Ohio friends, you and Kirk (above) both say you aren't following the misadventures of Slippin' Jimmy on Better Call Saul. If you watched and enjoyed Breaking Bad, it's must see. If you never watched Breaking Bad then probably not because Saul is closely related.

It's good to know you were a fan of L.A. Law, The Practice and Night Court. THis past year L.A. Law star Jimmy Smits had the lead role in another legal drama, Bluff City Law. Mrs. Shady and I watched and liked the series but unfortunately it lasted only one season.

I'm disappointed that you won't be able to fund a trip around the world on a dream date with Shady. Perhaps an independently wealthy dowager will discover this post and enter my contest. :)

If you like Billy Bob then I think you'd enjoy his latest series Goliath which has been renewed for a fourth and final season.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend YaYa. I wish you a safe and happy weekend as well!

All you need to do is sit back and enjoy next Tuesday's sneak preview of my new Shady's Place feature. It will be hosted by three of my favorite characters, one each from Goliath, The Practice and Better Call Saul. I hope you can make it over.

Thanks again for your visit and comment, dear friend Sherry!

  11. Whew! I am finally here and loved watching these promos. I haven’t seen Goliath but would love to since I love Billy BOB Thornton. I think he will do the talking on Tuesday. I am not into Better Call Saul but I can see him co-hosting, The Practise was a good show and intense at times. I will give it to Camryn Mannheim to do the talking. I have not seen The Young Lawyers but it looks good. I wonder whatever happened to the 2 young leads? I have never heard of the Canterbury Tale but I have heard but not seen The Good Wife. I should watch Boston Legal but there is something bout James Spadef that makes me want to punch him. I love Night Court and was shocked when Harry Anderson died. John Larroquette wine so many Emmys during the run of this show. I found it one of the funniest shows I had seen. L.A. Law was a good show and so 80s where some famous episodes happened like poor Diana Muldaur falling to her death due to the elevator doors opening but no elevator to the 2 lawyers, married in real life, who talk about the sexual move called the Venus Butterfly. Perry Mason is THE lawyer show where Mason always got his guy. It was a great show and I liked the later episodes too.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm thrilled to see you here doing your best to win a dream date with Shady, dear friend. Thank you for coming and best of luck to you! :)

It's good to know you appreciate the acting style of Billy Bob. I loved him in S-1 of Fargo and he's a tough cookie in Goliath. I have your three host picks recorded, including Saul Goodman aka Slippin' Jimmy McGill and Ellenor Frutt from The Practice. Two of your three picks match friend Suzanne's.

I'm sure you remember Lee J. Cobb, a fine veteran character actor seldom mentioned in the 21st century. I saw Lee in the TV Western series The Virginian and in the movies On The Waterfront, Man In The Gray Flannel Suit, 12 Angry Men, Three Faces Of Eve, Exodus, Death Of A Salesman and The Exorcist. Cobb's Young Lawyers co-star Zalman King became a director and directed Wild Orchid, the erotic thriller that stars Mickey Rourke and Jacqueline Bisset along with the Showtime series Red Shoe Diaries. King also collaborated with director Adrian Lyne on the erotic romance movie 9½ Weeks. Judy Pace, Cobb's other young co-star, appeared in numerous TV series and blaxploitation films of the 60s and 70s. Julianna Margulies starred in Canterbury's Law, which lasted only six episodes, and The Good Wife, which ran seven seasons.

It's good to know you watched and loved Night Court. I remember those two episodes of L.A. Law you mentioned. If you like Harry Hamlin, don't miss the 1994 erotic mystery thriller Save Me in which Harry falls under the spell of enchantress Lysette Anthony, the "it girl" in the Bryan Adams music videos. There's a new Perry Mason on HBO this year. Check it out!

Thanks again for entering the contest, dear friend BB. Stay tuned for my next post on Tuesday when you will find out if you're the lucky lady who accompanies Shady on a trip around the world!

    3. Thanks, BB! It's nice to know you read my reply and came up with additional insights to further the conversation. I'm glad you regard Lee Cobb as a fine actor. The Harry Hamlin - Lysette Anthony erotic thriller Save Me is another that belongs in the category of unintentionally funny.

  13. Hi Shady,

Golly, I guess I have to catch up on my TV series game. I'm only familiar with Perry Mason and Night Court. My parents and Nan watched these shows religiously. I've heard of Better Call Saul and the Good Wife, but never watched them.

Where can I catch Better Call Saul? Is the Good Wife still on? I think the library has the Good Wife on DVD. The other series you have posted looked awesome as well. I might have to do some binge watching.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for coming by and keeping your fingers & toes crossed hoping that you will win a dream date with Shady, dear friend! (A trip around the world is good for what ails ya.)

As my youngest commenting follower, it stands to reason that you don't know many of these TV lawyer shows. You have your folks and Nan to thank for exposing you to one of the best, Perry Mason, and to one of the funniest, Night Court, a comedy series everybody seems to know and love.

To answer your questions, Better Call Saul is streaming on Netflix. You need to be familiar with Breaking Bad, because Saul is a prequel. The Good Wife is available on YouTube, iTunes and Amazon Prime. You can also purchase the series on DVD but, if you can find it at your library, all the better. One of the main cast members, Christine Baranski, is currently starring in The Good Fight, the spin-off sequel to The Good Wife. That new series is available on CBS All Access.

Since you didn't (couldn't) name three characters from The Practice, Goliath and Better Call Saul, you are not technically eligible to win a date with Shady. However, I have been known to bend the rules and I might be able to do some finagling and find a way to take you along. :)

Thanks again for your visit and comment, dear friend JM. Stay tuned for tomorrow's post when you will learn which three legal eagles will be hosting my new feature here at Shady's Place!
