The Biggest Regret of My Life:

A Candid, Heartfelt Confession by Shady Del Knight

I'm down in the dumps, dear friend, and you'll soon know why.

Years ago on my old Shady Dell Music & Memories blog, I posted
for the first time two amazing photographs. The pics, taken at
the Shady Dell in 1961, were generously shared with us
by original Dell Rat Lynn Budesheim.

The photo above shows Dell rats chit-chatting in "The Barn" - the Dell's
historic dance hall. The blonde girl on the left was identified as
Debbie the Dellette   Lynn's friend Joyce Spahr Miller.

The second shows Joyce (left) out on the floor dancing to a jukebox tune.
Note that it was common at the time for two or more girls to dance
with each other at the Dell and other venues. Wish I knew which
Dell song was playing at the moment that picture was snapped.

All these years, I never thought anyone would ever be able
to top Lynn's priceless contribution - those amazing photos
of Dellions in the dance hall. But now, thanks to a couple
more original Dell rats who recently came forward-- I can!

 TODAY, I PROUDLY
  PREVENT PRESENT
  MORE EXHIBITS
 IN MY SERIES...

  SHADY DELL

 SHOW AND TELL!

 AND SHIRLEY,
 THESE ARE THE
 BEST OF ALL!

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again too few to mention

But, sincerely folks, there is one big regret worth mentioning.
I deeply regret the day I stopped going to the Shady Dell.

That sad day inevitably came when I graduated college, found a job in another city,
moved away from York, got married and "settled down." I spent the next 50+ years
wondering what the Dell was like in the weeks, months and years that followed my
departure, how much the look of the place and the Dell crowd had changed and
all the fun I might have had if I could have stayed on the scene a little longer.

Well, now I know. Boy, do I know!

 FOUND FOOTAGE!

You see, just recently, two original Dell rats of the 1970s
and 1980s - Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten - reached out
and generously donated ultra-rare films they themselves
recorded inside the Dell's dance hall in the months
and years after I hung up my Dell rat ears.

The priceless Super-8 footage seen here, captured by Al and Yul on
the Dell dance floor in the early 70s, has me eating my heart out,
knowing (and especially seeing) all that I missed!

Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten

I always knew I had lousy timing, and the films shot by
Dell rats Al and Yul are a brutal reminder that-- "I been
in the right place, but it must have been the wrong time."

Here's my story, it's sad but true
It's about a girl that I never knew

- film courtesy of Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten

The above clip is a painful reminder that a future Mrs. Shady
might have been waiting for me right there on the Dell
dance floor. But, alas, I was gone, retired, washed up.
Our epic romance was simply not meant to be!

(10 second pause while Shady sobs)

Having regained my composure, allow me to show you
the next amazing film clip contributed by new friends
of the Dell Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten.

As you might have noticed by now, soon after I left the Shady Dell
for good, the demographics at my favorite hangout suddenly
skyrocketed to 99% female! Oh, the pain... the pain!

of Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten

But wait -- there's more!  I have proof that the 1980s brought
even greater, more drastic changes to the Shady Dell dance hall.
The rare footage you are about to see, recorded by Al and Yul
and their candid cameras, shows us that a movie screen was
installed, a stage was erected and live rock bands played
to standing-room-only crowds of boisterous Dellettes!

If only I had continued on as a Dell rat one more night,
I would have witnessed this exciting all-Dellette
"Dance Contest." I'll never forgive myself
for flying the coop prematurely!

Yessum, in the years after I turned in my Dell Rat badge,
it was "anything goes" in the old barn.  Al, Yul and their
trusty Super-8 cams gathered graphic visual proof
that some mighty strange characters frequented
the joint and bizarre antics abounded.

And the man at the back said "Everyone attack"
and it turned into a ballroom blitz! - film

Shirley the news headlines will read "Dell Alum Makes Good"
once the MSM get their hands on this rare footage shot by Al
and Yul. It shows Debbie the Dellette, the most popular girl
ever to attend our dear old alma mater, all grown up and
performing with her dance troupe in The Barn. Yessum,
the cameras were rolling on "Homecoming Night" as
Debbie & The Dellettes brought their "Can't Wait
For The Weekend To Begin" tour back to
York, PA, and the Shady Dell!

Weekend To Begin" National Tour Homecoming -

Clearly, the film footage you are watching, secretly collected
by Dell rats Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten... locked away
in a vault for decades and made public for the first time
today exclusively here at Shady's Place... shows us
the shocking truth about the post-Shady Dell.

Jan & Dean's hit record "Surf City" boasted
"2 girls for every boy." Shucks, that's nothing!

These mind-boggling home-away-from-home movies
taken by Al and Yul reveal that the girl-boy ratio at
the Dell in the 70s and 80s was "a million to one!"

Rats! Woe is me! Why was I in such a hurry
to leave the Dell behind and "grow up"?

As these rare flicks donated by Al and Yul indicate,
I missed a heck of a lot when I left York to begin
my so-called "adult life" in another city!

in the years after I departed - film courtesy
of Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten

And there you have it, my friends. The biggest regret
of my life is that I left the Shady Dell too soon.

wasn't there to witness my old hangout's incredible early 1970s transformation...

...and the even more stunning metamorphosis that followed in the 80s.

I've been kicking myself ever since Dell rats Al and Yul sent me
their film reel offering indisputable proof of a Shady Dell
most of us "old timers" never even knew existed...

...swinging underground scene overrun by robo-babes!

Now, here I sit, five decades later, with tears in my eyes...

wondering "what if?" and feeling sorry, not so much for myself...

but for all those young women who never had the chance to meet
and, more importantly, to date and marry Shady Del Knight.

Thanks for hearing me out, dear friend. In parting, I'd like to wish you a

MERRY CHRISTMAS

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Alan Shore Wheedles: "Letch Dance!"

(COLD SHOW OPEN)

Pan's People do the "Monster Mash" -
Bobby "Boris" Pickett And The Crypt-Kickers
(Halloween 1962, highest chart pos. #1,
ver. 2 of dance perf. by Pan's People on
Sept. 13, 1973, ep. of Top Of The Pops)

Halloween's fast approaching and what better way to get into the spirit
than with a zesty dance routine by the lovely and talented Pan's People
from the English music television series Top Of The Pops? In that
vintage clip from Halloween season 1973, Pan's Peeps did the
"Mash"... they did the "Monster Mash," shaking their groove
things to Bobby (Boris) Pickett's nifty novelty number,
a record that originally charted at Halloween 1962.

Hi there. I'm
Alan Shore
and you're not.

I got that one
from Chevy Chase.

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

Unless you've been hiding out on planet Pluto for the last hundred years,
you know that I'm the hot shot lawyer who starred in not one but two
hit courtroom dramedies, namely The Practice and Boston Legal.

On season 8 of The Practice, I swept in, grabbed the reins and singlehandedly
resurrected the struggling Boston law firm of Young, Frutt, and Berluti. When
that blew up I moved across town, shook up the establishment and proved
myself the best and most libidinous lawyer at my BFF Denny Crane's
shop Crane, Poole & Schmidt as the star of Boston Legal.

A little more about me: My hobbies are women, incessant flirting, women,
getting even, women, invading personal space, women and crossing
the line in imaginative ways. Did I mention women? Scroll down
to view more examples of my libertine libido in action:

As you can see, I never got the memo about political correctness.
When I'm not busy going rogue... I'm a loose cannon.

I smoke nasty cigars.....

I consume mass quantities of alcohol. I have even been known
to jaywalk on occasion... and these are my good qualities.
Gotta love me... or not.

Be that as it may, I am the most loyal
friend you'll ever find, and trust me,
you don't want me as an enemy.

Recently Shady Del Knight hired me to
spice up his Bandstands in Foreign Lands
series. My first order of business was to
raid the archives and seize the clips of
dancing damsels on Top Of The Pops.
You see, I am absolutely ob-SESSED
with attractive women, especially
when they are whirling and twirling
and jiggling and gyrating on stage.

Which brings me to the point of this post. Effective immediately I'll be hosting
Letch Dance, a new Shady's Place feature that shines the spotlight on the lovely
ladies of Pan's People, Ruby Flipper and Legs & Co, the happy hoofers who
appeared on Top Of The Pops from 1968 through 1981. Letch Dance is
a blog series that thinks it's a radio show. Big fun is literally waiting
in the wings, but first allow me to deliver my opening statement.

PAN'S PEOPLE (JULY 1968 TO APRIL 1976)

Your honor, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, over the years these young women
have been looked down upon by certain segments of society. Essentially they
have been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion. I say don't
hate them just because they're beautiful and graceful on their feet.
I say don't judge them just because they chose to make a few
extra pounds sterling shaking their booties on TV.

I can cite precedent. In a landmark
decision in 1956, Supreme Court
Justice Richard Penniman wrote
the following opinion, and I quote:

The girl can't help it if she was born to please
She can't help it, the girl can't help it
And if she's got a figure made to squeeze
She can't help it, the girl can't help it

Now I'm not about to subject you to the same old tired song and dance routine.
These bopping, Bunny Hopping Brit birds are fresh faced, vivacious and exciting.

LEGS & CO (NOVEMBER 1976 TO OCTOBER 1981)

For years they helped make Top Of The Pops the toast of the town,
and they made a little bread in the process. I'm on a roll... so without
further ado... letch the music play and letch the dancing begin!

CLICK TO START THE VIDEO NOW!

Here's the ideal music bed for a fan-made tribute to the classy lassies
of Pan's People and Legs & Co. It's "Hot Legs," a rowdy song from
Rod Stewart's 1977 album Foot Loose & Fancy Free. Have at it!

"Hot Legs" - Rod Stewart
(Mar./Apr. 1978, highest chart pos. #25 Cash Box/#28 Hot 100,
fan tribute to Pan's People and Legs & Co on Top Of The Pops)

RUBY FLIPPER (MAY TO OCTOBER 1976)

Now let's give Ruby Flipper some sugar and watch them perform.
Remember, if the Ruby Flipper doesn't fit... you must acquit.
Ask me what I'm thinking as the girls get their kicks to
this hit tune by Walter Murphy, and I'll plead the fifth!

"A Fifth Of Beethoven" - Walter Murphy & the Big Apple Band
(Aug thru Oct. 1976, highest chart pos. #1 Hot 100 & Cash Box,
dance perf. by Ruby Flipper on Top Of The Pops)

I hope you enjoyed this sneak preview
of my new blog series that thinks
it's a radio show. The evidence
presented proves beyond a shadow
that Pan's People, Ruby Flipper
and Legs & Co... troupers one
and all, are highly skilled in the
art of terpsichore, and they
aren't bad at dancing either.
BA-DUM-BUMP)

I'm Alan Shore bidding you farewell. I promise
there'll be much more music and merriment
when I make my next appearance
at Shady's Place and cry:
Letch Dance!

To play us off, here again are Pan's People
with a second Halloween treat, a different
version of their "Monster Mash" routine.
Bye bye!

 PAT BENATAR

ROCK POP
MUNICH, GERMANY (ZDF)

The first stop on our Biffle tour is Munich, Germany, and a bandstand
called Rock Pop - a rock music TV series that aired in Deutschland
from 1978 through 1982. Appearing on the show in this vintage
clip is Brooklyn born rock singer Pat Benatar performing her
breakthrough single that spent four-and-a-half months
on the U.S. charts - "Heartbreaker."

 STEVE MILLER

 (LEGS & CO)

TOP OF THE POPS
LONDON, ENGLAND

Let's keep on rockin' now as we switch to Merrie Olde England
and a song classic of the mid 70s, "Rock'n Me," one of the three
chart-topping hit singles recorded by blues rocker Steve Miller
and his band. Here with every intention of rock'n you, are the

 GENE PITNEY

BEAT-CLUB
BREMEN, WEST GERMANY

Our next Biffle bandstand is back in Deutschland - Bremen, Germany, to be exact,
and the stage of the TV series Beat-Club. That's where we find American pop
crooner Gene Pitney ready to sing "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart,"
a song originally recorded by the English pop duo David And Jonathan.
Released as a single in the fall of 1967, Gene's version reached the
top 5 in the UK but merely Bubbled Under on the U.S. chart.
Gene achieved greater success with the song in early 1989
when he waxed it as a duet with Brit artist Marc Almond.
Their single spent 4 weeks at the top of the UK chart.
Let's press rewind, return to the 60s, and catch
Gene's performance of the song on Beat-Club.

"Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart" - Gene Pitney
(Oct to Dec. 1967, highest chart pos. #5 UK,
#130 U.S. Bubbling Under, perf. on Beat-Club)

 TINA CHARLES

TOPPOP
HOLLAND, THE NETHERLANDS

Next our whirlwind world tour takes us to Holland for a great performance
by Tina Charles, an English songstress who became a disco queen of
the mid and late 70s. Tina is set to appear on the music TV show
TopPop and sing her signature song, the international hit
"I Love to Love (But My Baby Loves to Dance)."

Let's stay right where we are in The Netherlands and the Dutch TV
music showcase TopPop. Performing next are Shirley (And Company),
a disco group from the U.S. featuring lead singers Shirley Goodman,
formerly one half of the 50s R&B duo Shirley & Lee, along with male
vocalist Jesus Alvarez who later became an ordained minister. They are
here to do their international hit single "Shame, Shame, Shame" a song
written by Sylvia Robinson, "The Mother of Hip–Hop" and founder
of Sugar Hill Records. "Shame, Shame, Shame" hit number one
in The Netherlands and four other countries including the U.S.
where it topped the Disco and R&B charts. Without further
ado, here they are-- Shirley... (And Company!

 PRINCESS

TOP OF THE POPS
LONDON, ENGLAND

The name Desiree Heslop didn't exactly roll off the tongue.
That's why this English thrush changed her name to Princess.
Back to London we go to check out Princess appearing on
Top Of The Pops to sing the biggest hit of her career,
"Say I'm Your Number One," a single that peaked
at #2 in Germany and New Zealand and made

Best of Bandstands in Foreign Lands - Vol. 11:
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood... in Nutbush!

Welcome to volume 11
of my globetrotting series

BANDSTANDS IN
FOREIGN LANDS!

I'm Shady Seaweed, here to bring you more great
music performances that originated from TV studios,
big halls and nightclubs in Europe and other parts
of the world from the 1960s through early 2000s.

Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of music,
the thrill of Vic Tory (the little known "Fifth Beatle")... and
the agony of the feet (from so much dancing)... this is:

Bandstands in
Foreign Lands!

 SANTA ESMERALDA
 STARRING
 LEROY GOMEZ

TOPPOP
THE NETHERLANDS

"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" was originally recorded by Nina Simone.
Baby Boomers know and love the cover version by The Animals, a hit single
on both sides of the pond in early 1965. Younger audiences best remember
the song as a chart-topping late 70s disco hit by the U.S. - French group
Santa Esmeralda featuring Massachusetts born lead singer Leroy Gómez.
Behold a very exciting performance as Leroy and his trio of flamenco
dancers perform the song on the Dutch TV music show TopPop!

"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"
Santa Esmeralda Starring Leroy Gómez
(Dec. 1977/Jan. 1978, highest chart pos.
#14 Cash Box/#15 Hot 100, perf. on TopPop)

 CREAM

BEAT-CLUB
BREMEN, WEST GERMANY

The British rock band Cream was the all star trio of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and
Ginger Baker. "Strange Brew" is a Cream classic, one of their best known songs.
As I did my research for this edition of Biffle, I was shocked to discover that
the single of "Strange Brew" single failed to chart in the U.S. (It penetrated
the top 20 in the UK.) I think I solved the mystery. The 45 was released
in June of 1967, five months before the band's second studio album
Disraeli Gears became a smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic.
During the Summer of Love, 1967, Cream was not yet well
known by rock lovers stateside. Here now is a beautifully
restored clip of Cream with Clapton on lead performing
"Strange Brew" on Beat-Club, the West German TV
music program broadcast on the national public
television channel based in Bremen.

"Strange Brew" - Cream
(June/July 1967, highest chart pos.
#17 UK, perf. on Beat-Club)

 IKE AND TINA TURNER

 (PAN'S PEOPLE)

TOP OF THE POPS
LONDON, ENGLAND

In the summer of 1973, just before separating from husband Ike, Tina Turner
penned and recorded the semi-autobiographical "Nutbush City Limits," a song
about her rural hometown of Nutbush, Tennessee. The single, produced by Ike
and released as by Ike & Tina Turner, brushed the top 10 on the R&B chart
that fall. Here in their customary colorful costumes are those saucy sirens,
the dancing damsels of Pan's People, hoofing to the song on the London
based TV show Top Of The Pops. (Please clap your hands and cheer.)

"Nutbush" - Ike and Tina Turner
(Oct./Nov. 1973, highest chart pos. #11 R&B/#22 Hot 100,
dance performed by Pan's People on Top of the Pops)

 LAURA BRANIGAN

ZDF KULTNACHT
MAINZ, GERMANY

She left us too soon - Laura Branigan. This summer marks 15 years since the
much loved pop singer died of a brain aneurysm at age 52. Let's turn back
the clock to happier times and hop back over to Germany where Laura
appeared on the TV musical series ZDF Kultnacht broadcast on the
PBS system in Mainz. Enjoy Laura in her prime as she performs
her 1984 top 5 hit "Self Control," a single that spent nearly
half the year on the chart!

"Self Control" - Laura Branigan
(May thru July 1984, highest chart pos. #4 Hot 100,
perf. on the German TV show ZDF Kultnacht)

 CLIMAX BLUES BAND

TOP OF THE POPS/G PLUS
LONDON, ENGLAND

Earlier we caught Cream performing in Germany on Beat-Club, the show that
in 1972 evolved into Musikladen. Now here's another British rock act, this one
called Climax Blues Band. Released as a single in the UK in September 1976,
"Couldn't Get It Right," a song written by the band, went top 10. Released in
the U.S. at the beginning of 1977, the record became an even bigger hit in
the states, finishing in the top 3 that spring. Our Biffle tour takes us back
to England now where Climax Blues Band is set to  perform their hit on
Top Of The Pops, a vid shown on the UK entertainment channel G Plus.

"Couldn't Get It Right" - Climax Blues Band
(Apr./May 1977, highest chart pos. #3 Hot 100,
perf. on Top Of The Pops/G Plus Channel UK)

 SANTA ESMERALDA
 STARRING
  LEROY GOMEZ

ZDF FERNSEHGARTEN
MAINZ, GERMANY

At the beginning of the post you experienced Santa Esmeralda Starring Leroy Gómez
performing the disco hit "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" on a Dutch TV broadcast
in the late 70s. Fast forward to May 2014 when Leroy, once again flanked by zesty
flamenco dancers, performed his signature song live for the enthusiastic crowd at
ZDF Fernsehgarten, a show that originated from the ZDF public broadcasting
center in Mainz. If you would rather skip most of the German introduction,
click to start the video at the 30 second mark, and I urge you to turn
the sound up loud to get maximum enjoyment from this exciting
performance. As you are about to see and hear, Leroy still had it,
still had that zest, that fire burning inside 36 years later!
