The Biggest Regret of My Life:

A Candid, Heartfelt Confession by Shady Del Knight

I'm down in the dumps, dear friend, and you'll soon know why.

Years ago on my old Shady Dell Music & Memories blog, I posted
for the first time two amazing photographs. The pics, taken at
the Shady Dell in 1961, were generously shared with us
by original Dell Rat Lynn Budesheim.

The photo above shows Dell rats chit-chatting in "The Barn" - the Dell's
historic dance hall. The blonde girl on the left was identified as
Debbie the Dellette   Lynn's friend Joyce Spahr Miller.

The second shows Joyce (left) out on the floor dancing to a jukebox tune.
Note that it was common at the time for two or more girls to dance
with each other at the Dell and other venues. Wish I knew which
Dell song was playing at the moment that picture was snapped.

All these years, I never thought anyone would ever be able
to top Lynn's priceless contribution - those amazing photos
of Dellions in the dance hall. But now, thanks to a couple
more original Dell rats who recently came forward-- I can!

 TODAY, I PROUDLY
  PREVENT PRESENT
  MORE EXHIBITS
 IN MY SERIES...

  SHADY DELL

 SHOW AND TELL!

 AND SHIRLEY,
 THESE ARE THE
 BEST OF ALL!

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again too few to mention

But, sincerely folks, there is one big regret worth mentioning.
I deeply regret the day I stopped going to the Shady Dell.

That sad day inevitably came when I graduated college, found a job in another city,
moved away from York, got married and "settled down." I spent the next 50+ years
wondering what the Dell was like in the weeks, months and years that followed my
departure, how much the look of the place and the Dell crowd had changed and
all the fun I might have had if I could have stayed on the scene a little longer.

Well, now I know. Boy, do I know!

 FOUND FOOTAGE!

You see, just recently, two original Dell rats of the 1970s
and 1980s - Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten - reached out
and generously donated ultra-rare films they themselves
recorded inside the Dell's dance hall in the months
and years after I hung up my Dell rat ears.

The priceless Super-8 footage seen here, captured by Al and Yul on
the Dell dance floor in the early 70s, has me eating my heart out,
knowing (and especially seeing) all that I missed!

I always knew I had lousy timing, and the films shot by
Dell rats Al and Yul are a brutal reminder that-- "I been
in the right place, but it must have been the wrong time."

Here's my story, it's sad but true
It's about a girl that I never knew

The above clip is a painful reminder that a future Mrs. Shady
might have been waiting for me right there on the Dell
dance floor. But, alas, I was gone, retired, washed up.
Our epic romance was simply not meant to be!

Having regained my composure, allow me to show you
the next amazing film clip contributed by new friends
of the Dell Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten.

As you might have noticed by now, soon after I left the Shady Dell
for good, the demographics at my favorite hangout suddenly
skyrocketed to 99% female! Oh, the pain... the pain!

But wait -- there's more!  I have proof that the 1980s brought
even greater, more drastic changes to the Shady Dell dance hall.
The rare footage you are about to see, recorded by Al and Yul
and their candid cameras, shows us that a movie screen was
installed, a stage was erected and live rock bands played
to standing-room-only crowds of boisterous Dellettes!

If only I had continued on as a Dell rat one more night,
I would have witnessed this exciting all-Dellette
"Dance Contest." I'll never forgive myself
for flying the coop prematurely!

Yessum, in the years after I turned in my Dell Rat badge,
it was "anything goes" in the old barn.  Al, Yul and their
trusty Super-8 cams gathered graphic visual proof
that some mighty strange characters frequented
the joint and bizarre antics abounded.

And the man at the back said "Everyone attack"
and it turned into a ballroom blitz! - film

Shirley the news headlines will read "Dell Alum Makes Good"
once the MSM get their hands on this rare footage shot by Al
and Yul. It shows Debbie the Dellette, the most popular girl
ever to attend our dear old alma mater, all grown up and
performing with her dance troupe in The Barn. Yessum,
the cameras were rolling on "Homecoming Night" as
Debbie & The Dellettes brought their "Can't Wait
For The Weekend To Begin" tour back to
York, PA, and the Shady Dell!

Weekend To Begin" National Tour Homecoming -

Clearly, the film footage you are watching, secretly collected
by Dell rats Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten... locked away
in a vault for decades and made public for the first time
today exclusively here at Shady's Place... shows us
the shocking truth about the post-Shady Dell.

Jan & Dean's hit record "Surf City" boasted
"2 girls for every boy." Shucks, that's nothing!

These mind-boggling home-away-from-home movies
taken by Al and Yul reveal that the girl-boy ratio at
the Dell in the 70s and 80s was "a million to one!"

Rats! Woe is me! Why was I in such a hurry
to leave the Dell behind and "grow up"?

As these rare flicks donated by Al and Yul indicate,
I missed a heck of a lot when I left York to begin
my so-called "adult life" in another city!

And there you have it, my friends. The biggest regret
of my life is that I left the Shady Dell too soon.

wasn't there to witness my old hangout's incredible early 1970s transformation...

...and the even more stunning metamorphosis that followed in the 80s.

I've been kicking myself ever since Dell rats Al and Yul sent me
their film reel offering indisputable proof of a Shady Dell
most of us "old timers" never even knew existed...

...swinging underground scene overrun by robo-babes!

Now, here I sit, five decades later, with tears in my eyes...

wondering "what if?" and feeling sorry, not so much for myself...

but for all those young women who never had the chance to meet
and, more importantly, to date and marry Shady Del Knight.

Thanks for hearing me out, dear friend. In parting, I'd like to wish you a

MERRY CHRISTMAS

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

A SUPER GROOVY
ST. SWITHUN'S DAY!

AND, MOST OF ALL, A...

 APRIL FOOLS' DAY!

  1. Oh Shady, you didn't disappoint! You say you have regrets...maybe just a few. I have regrets, that I never met you...at the Dell...the Dell...the Dell! That's my own song I just wrote to no music except what's playing in my brain! Ha! Happy April 1 to you! You say you went on to adulting (as they say now a days) but I'm not truly sure you're actually a real adult with your sense of humor and fun! I hope you're having a wonderful day and I'm glad to get here early for a change! Don't feel bad for leaving all those gals without the opportunity to know you. It's their loss! You snooze you lose! Bye Shady!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

You're the Early Bird this time, dear friend, earning the golden Shady statue, and I thank you for coming right over on day one!

Yessum, it is a shame you didn't grow up in my neck of the woods.
You would have made a great Dellette. I'm pleased that you got a kick out of this year's April Fools' gag post. You are certainly right about Shady Del Knight. He never grew up and has no plans to do so. They don't call him "The Oldest Living Toddler" for nothing. :) Yessum, that blonde "Sugar Sugar" dancer could have become Mrs. Shady but, sadly, she and I were victims of bad timing and never met. Our legendary love affair just wasn't meant to be. :)

Happy April Fools' Day to you and my sweetie-pie Annabelle, dear friend YaYa. (Be sure to show her the three funny dog GIFs at the end of the post.) Thanks again for coming to the party early and have a great month!

  2. Happy April Fool's day. I had a feeling you were going to do something like this. lol

Super-8 footage, indeed. I wonder how many people reading this will know what they even is? I asked my daughter and she had no idea. People younger than me probably wouldn't know.

That was pretty funny. Too bad you missed out on dating and marrying all those women. lol

I hope you are having a good day. You sure made me smile today. Falcor says, woof.

    1. Hi, Mary! You take the silver!

Happy AFD to you, dear friend, and to my buddy Falcor! (Be sure to show him the funny dogs there at the end of the post.) I'm happy that my blog gremlins didn't swipe your comment as an April Fools' prank as they so often did in the past.

Yessum, you and I have been friends long enough for you to know that
when I appear to get ultra serious at the start of a post, it almost always means that a gag is about to unfold.

Thanks for mentioning Super-8. In college broadcasting school, I shot my student films using a Super-8 camera. One of the movies featured a crazed mountain man attacking a guy whose car broke down on a country road. The other movie involved my folks and my girlfriend, the future Mrs. Shady #1, joining me in acting roles. Based on a horror comic book story I read, it was about a masked serial killer who one day discovers, to his utter dismay, that his face had morphed to look exactly like the grotesque mask he always wore to commit his crimes. Anyway, young as you are, I'm glad you are old enough to recall the Super-8 format.

By the way, among the songs in the post, my Pick To Click is one that I literally just discovered a few days ago - "The Weekend" - by English DJ Michael Gray, and featuring the vocals of English disco and house singer Shèna. "The Weekend" ("can't wait for the weekend to begin") was an international dance hit during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season of 2004, but I had never heard it before!

Knowing that my silly post put a smile on your face puts a smile on mine, dear friend Mary. Thanks for the kind comments and for visiting early on day one. Take care and look for my next post around the end of the month!

    1. Hi, Jerre! You capture the bronze, good buddy!

You got me pegged, my friend! I can never let April 1 come and go without using the occasion to run a gag post. I hope you enjoyed getting a glimpse of what "old timers" like you and I missed as the Shady Dell evolved and changed tremendously in the 1970s and 80s. By the way, do you happen to know Dell rats Al B. Dern and Yul B. Smitten?

Have a good month and look for my next post on or around the 28th. Hope to see you then, good buddy Jerre!

    1. Hi, Alex!

Happy April, good buddy, and thanks for coming early to experience my annual April Fools' Day post.

The real Shady Dell was indeed a spot where guys often brought their girlfriends on a date. I did so myself many times. It was also a place that afforded single teenagers a chance to meet new people and possibly forge a permanent or semi-permanent relationship. Quite a few married couples point to the Dell as the place where they first met. The Dell dance floor is where the future Mrs. Shady #1 and I first met in June, 1968.

Thanks again for joining the fun, good buddy Alex. I'll be back with my next offering at the end of the month. Till then, take care!

  5. Happy April Fool's Day, Shady! Pat likes the pup at the end trying to get the cupcake (though he wants to warn him not to eat chocolate!). I met my husband in a beer joint owned by a cousin of mine. (on St. Patrick's Day)

    1. Hi, Kelly & Pat!

Thanks for making time on a very busy day in Blogland to visit me at Shady's Place, dear friends! Happy April Fools' Day to you both!

Yessum, I was hoping you'd show Pat those three funny dog GIFs at the end. The first one reminded me of Pat, and that's why I selected it.

What an interesting revelation, Kelly. Did the two of you fall in love over mugs of green beer? I fell for Mrs. Shady #2 on a late December cruise aboard a yacht chartered by the TV station where we both worked at the time. It was the company's creative version of the annual office Christmas party. Romance was in the air that night, and a lot of champagne was in our tummies. One thing led to another and we are still together to this day. (If you are reading this reply, Mrs. Shady, please kindly disregard my expressed yearnings for the blonde goddess in that "Sugar Sugar" video. I was merely going for a cheap laugh when I wrote that stuff, Turtle Dove.)

Gosh, Kelly, I hope I won't be sleeping on the couch tonight. :) Thanks again for dropping by and have a great month of April, dear friend!

  6. You had me going there for a minute my friend! I was astounded at the changes to the old Shady Dell. As I kept reading and listening I realized that this was not really the transformation it appeared to be. I wish I had the figure of some of those dancing beauties. They wouldn't have stood a chance against your charm. Thanks for the chuckle!

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks for coming by in the midst of your busy April 1 schedule, dear friend!

I'm happy to know that I had you going for awhile before you smelled a Dell rat and realized it was my annual April Fools' prank. Most of those dancing beauties were the studio dancers on Top Of The Pops, the London-based music TV show of the 1960s and 70s. Hard to believe those young women are now in their 70s and have grandchildren or even great grandchildren. Time marches on.

Thanks again for joining the fun on this very busy day of the year, dear friend Janet. I urge you to show my buddy Benny the funny dogs at the end of the post. He might see someone he knows. :) Look for my next post on April 28 and, until then, take care!

  7. Hello Mr. Shady...I've been busy dancing my Ts and A off in my white Disco boots. This is funny and just think, most of these gals are grandma's now with some a mighty few pounds heavier...lol. was that Dick Van Dyke in that last peek a boo video? I feel like I have seen those robot women..maybe from In Luke Flint. I did have a mini white dress with silver buckles etc and that one gal, with the ringed belt in gold...I actually owned that same belt when I was much younger. I could go go dance quite well but I never had my ta tas on display. Speaking of display, how did anyone capture me snd the rest of the credit counsellors dance around the photocopier. Hahaaaa. This reminds me of the L9ve Boat when, after a commercial break, the camera would center on a girl's assets as she came out of the pool, walk to the bar before the camera stopped on the actual actors. Hope you are having a great day!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for setting aside time for a visit on day one, dear friend!

Yessum, I was just telling friend Janet (above) that those hotties in the videos are now grannies or even great-grannies. That realization makes those nicely restored time capsule clips from Top Of The Pops in particular all the more precious. I watched all of the videos from start to finish and don't recall seeing Dick Van Dyke. By the way, Dick will turn 100 years old this coming December, so let's cheer him on to that marvelous milestone.

You wrote: "that one gal, with the ringed belt in gold...I actually owned that same belt when I was much younger." I'm aghast, dear friend! The nerve of that dancing girl to STEAL YOUR BELT so that she could look hot wearing it on TV! :) I'm going to pin on my fake badge, take her into custody and place her under house arrest (...at MY house!!!) Yessum, you have often told stories about your exciting nights as a disco queen. I wish I had been at the same venues so that we could have met, danced (and maybe smooched).

Yessum, that's a great music video for Michael Gray's 2004 dance hit "The Weekend." Believe it or not, I was totally unaware of the song until three or four days ago when I came upon it on YouTube. I loved the song as soon as I heard it, and the music video showing a group of office ladies busting loose on Friday night sealed the deal. I knew I had to work that video into today's post somehow.

How about that video showing the blonde Top Of The Pops honey dancing to "Sugar Sugar"? Seems the studio cameraman was experiencing technical difficulties. Poor chap couldn't stop his camera from continuously zooming in on her ample cleavage. :)

Speaking of The Love Boat, there's a new series that critics are comparing to it. Airing on ABC, Doctor Odyssey stars Joshua Jackson (from Dawson's Creek and Dr. Death). Premise: "Max, a new doctor on board a luxury cruise ship (The Odyssey) and his small but capable team handle unique medical cases (and each other) far away from the nearest shore." So far, the series is getting good reviews and high ratings.

Please put my buddy Harley's snout up to the screen and show him those three dogs at the end of the post. They might make him burst out laughing. :)

Thanks again for your kind visit and comments, and thanks for the email, too. I'll be over to see you tomorrow at the BBC to check out your song playlist. Until then, have a safe and restful evening up there in our 51st state, dear friend BB!

  8. Maybe because I haven't heard it in a long time, but "Sugar. Sugar" rocked a little harder than I remember it. Obviously not Alice Cooper, but those go-go girls didn't seem to mind.

The Ola and the Jangles video showed a scene from 1960s American International drive-in classic Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for reporting in, good buddy, and happy April to you!

You've heard of wardrobe malfunctions. In that "Sugar Sugar" video, we see evidence of a CAMERA malfunction. The Top Of The Pops crew member can't seem to stop his camera from zooming in on the blonde dancer's bosom. The smile on her date's face is priceless, as is her own smile when she realizes her lovely figure is under the camera's close scrutiny throughout the song. It's a classic moment in music TV history that reminds us of "the way we were."

Good eye for identifying the scenes in the "Let's Dance" video as coming from the 1966 Eurospy (Spaghetti spy) film Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs starring Vincent Price and rock & roll idol Fabian.

Thanks again for coming to my April Fools' bash, good buddy Kirk. Take care and I'll see you at the end of the month!
