Best of Bandstands in Foreign Lands - Vol. 12:
Shame, Shame, Shame On You!

Welcome to volume 12
of my globetrotting series

BANDSTANDS IN
FOREIGN LANDS!

I'm Shady Seaweed,
here to bring you
more great music
performances that
originated from TV
studios, big halls
and nightclubs in
Europe and other
parts of the world
from the 1960s
thru early 2000s.

Join me now for another exciting
trip back in time as we visit

Bandstands in
Foreign Lands!

 PAT BENATAR

ROCK POP
MUNICH, GERMANY (ZDF)

The first stop on our Biffle tour is Munich, Germany, and a bandstand
called Rock Pop - a rock music TV series that aired in Deutschland
from 1978 through 1982. Appearing on the show in this vintage
clip is Brooklyn born rock singer Pat Benatar performing her
breakthrough single that spent four-and-a-half months
on the U.S. charts - "Heartbreaker."

"Heartbreaker" - Pat Benatar
(Mar. 1980, highest chart pos. #23 Hot 100,
#19 Cash Box#16 Canada, from Aug. 1979 album
In the Heat of the Night, perf. on TV show Rock Pop)

 STEVE MILLER

 (LEGS & CO)

TOP OF THE POPS
LONDON, ENGLAND

Let's keep on rockin' now as we switch to Merrie Olde England
and a song classic of the mid 70s, "Rock'n Me," one of the three
chart-topping hit singles recorded by blues rocker Steve Miller
and his band. Here with every intention of rock'n you, are the
fetching females of the dance troupe Legs & Co on the
British television music show Top Of The Pops.

"Rock'n Me" - Steve Miller
(Oct./Nov. 1976, highest chart pos. #1 Hot 100,
#1 Canada/#11 UK, dance perf. by
Legs & Co on Top Of The Pops)

 GENE PITNEY

BEAT-CLUB
BREMEN, WEST GERMANY

Our next Biffle bandstand is back in Deutschland - Bremen, Germany, to be exact,
and the stage of the TV series Beat-Club. That's where we find American pop
crooner Gene Pitney ready to sing "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart,"
a song originally recorded by the English pop duo David And Jonathan.
Released as a single in the fall of 1967, Gene's version reached the
top 5 in the UK but merely Bubbled Under on the U.S. chart.
Gene achieved greater success with the song in early 1989
when he waxed it as a duet with Brit artist Marc Almond.
Their single spent 4 weeks at the top of the UK chart.
Let's press rewind, return to the 60s, and catch
Gene's performance of the song on Beat-Club.

"Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart" - Gene Pitney
(Oct to Dec. 1967, highest chart pos. #5 UK,
#130 U.S. Bubbling Under, perf. on Beat-Club)

 TINA CHARLES

TOPPOP
HOLLAND, THE NETHERLANDS

Next our whirlwind world tour takes us to Holland for a great performance
by Tina Charles, an English songstress who became a disco queen of
the mid and late 70s. Tina is set to appear on the music TV show
TopPop and sing her signature song, the international hit
"I Love to Love (But My Baby Loves to Dance)."

"I Love to Love (But My Baby Loves to Dance)"
Tina Charles (Mar./Apr. 1976, highest chart
pos. #2 U.S. Disco/#1 UK & Ireland, perf.
on TopPop TV show, The Netherlands)

 SHIRLEY (AND COMPANY)

TOPPOP
HOLLAND, THE NETHERANDS

Let's stay right where we are in The Netherlands and the Dutch TV
music showcase TopPop. Performing next are Shirley (And Company),
a disco group from the U.S. featuring lead singers Shirley Goodman,
formerly one half of the 50s R&B duo Shirley & Lee, along with male
vocalist Jesus Alvarez who later became an ordained minister. They are
here to do their international hit single "Shame, Shame, Shame" a song
written by Sylvia Robinson, "The Mother of Hip–Hop" and founder
of Sugar Hill Records. "Shame, Shame, Shame" hit number one
in The Netherlands and four other countries including the U.S.
where it topped the Disco and R&B charts. Without further
ado, here they are-- Shirley... (And Company!

"Shame Shame Shame" - Shirley (And Company)
(Mar. 1975, highest chart pos. #12 Hot 100/#8 Cash Box,
# 1 U.S. Dance & R&B/#1 Netherlands, Austria, Belgium
and Germany, perf. on Dutch TV show TopPop)

 PRINCESS

TOP OF THE POPS
LONDON, ENGLAND

The name Desiree Heslop didn't exactly roll off the tongue.
That's why this English thrush changed her name to Princess.
Back to London we go to check out Princess appearing on
Top Of The Pops to sing the biggest hit of her career,
"Say I'm Your Number One," a single that peaked
at #2 in Germany and New Zealand and made
the top 20 on the R&B chart in the U.S.

  1. Good morning Shady,

You put me into the groove before I'm off to ice skate! It's a chilly morning, perfect weather to fly around the ice, and you provided the soundtrack!

Pat Benetar is my favourite! I love Heartbreaker and I'm glad you started the entry with this. I wasn't too familiar with Gene Pitney, Princess, or Tina Charles. I liked Tina Charles's and Princess's sounds the best. It seems like a lot of artists that came out between the disco era and the 80s were one hit wonders. Did Princess or Tina Charles achieve any other chart successes?

Shame, Shame, Shame! This blog entry did not disappoint! Thanks for the smiles this morning. Have a great Sunday, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for dropping in, dear friend! Congratulations on being the early bird and thank you for coming over before ice skating.

To my ears, British singer Princess sounds like the UK's answer to Whitney Houston. Her voice and style are very similar. Whitney was exploding in popularity the same year Princess nearly topped the chart with her biggest hit "Say I'm Your Number One." In the year that followed, Princess brushed the top 5 on the U.S. Dance chart with "After The Love Has Gone" and had two other UK hit singles, a top 20 and a top 40, before fading away.

In the two years that followed her biggest hit and signature song, Tina Charles scored six more UK chart hits ranging from a top 5 to three top 30s.

Thanks again for stopping by and have a happy Sunday, dear friend JM!

    2. Hi Shady,

Now that you mention it, Princess does sound similar to Whitney Houston! I might have to check out more of Princess, that might be an afternoon jam during work. We got new monitors at work and they make my eyes tired, I could use some music to keep me grooving.

I hope you are having a good Tuesday and have a great week ahead!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I listened to a few other Princess recordings on YouTube and she didn't sound as much like Whitney to me as she did on "Number One." That's not to say she didn't lay down some super sounds. There are quite a few extended remixes of her singles and here's an example - "Red Hot."

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=io7lje7uoRo

You need to break away from those monitors occasionally. They produce eye fatigue and sap your energy.

Thank you again and enjoy the rest of your week as well, dear friend JM!

    4. Hi Shady,

I think I'll listen tomorrow. Today was the day from hell at my full-time job, my manager has been in a sour mood all week. I think listening to Princess tomorrow will be a reprieve.

Have a great Thankful Thursday, dear friend. Hope all is well with you.

    5. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Sorry to hear it, dear friend. I hope the sophisticated beats of Princess help turn your week around before it ends.

Happy Thankful Thursday to you as well, dear friend JM!

  2. I'm in early today! How's it going with you Shady? These tunes were pretty cool since I always loved Pat Benatar and I enjoyed watching the dancers in Steve Miller's song. The outfits are sooo 1970's! I hadn't heard Gene Pitney in forever and I do remember his songs..not this one though and I can't say it's a fav. The other artists aren't familiar and I guess it's good for those who weren't too popular over here that they have hits across the pond and do more than we know with their music...or becoming a minister! Anyway, I hope you're having a nice Sunday and be aware that cold air may creep down far south this week. We're heading into a deep freeze after today and the wood stove will be humming. Big hugs from Ohio this Sunday morning!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks a lot for dropping by so early, dear friend! I'm happy you enjoyed coming along on my latest Biffle world tour.

"Heartbreaker" is my favorite Pat Benatar song. It's genuine rock. Three years later, Pat was turning into more of a pop rock artist and I lost interest. I knew you'd focus on the outfits worn by those Brit birds Legs & Co on Top Of The Pops. Keep in mind that the girls had to whip together a choreographed dance routine for two or three songs every week with little advance notice. Overall I think they did a fine job.

Gene Pitney was struggling on the charts at the time "Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart" was released, a victim of the British Invasion, no doubt. A consistent hit maker in the early and mid 60s, Gene suffered a string of poorly performing singles in the later 60s with one bright spot, the comeback hit and Northern Soul favorite "She's A Heartbreaker" which was released in 1968.

I know you aren't looking forward to the Arctic blast, but I am already loving the cooler weather. Yesterday, for the first time since March, we were able to open the windows and let some fresh air into the house.

Thanks again for joining the fun and have a wonderful week, dear friend YaYa!

  3. Happy Sunday, Shady Seaweed-I made it over to the Shady Zone, found the Entrance, and stepped in for some pretty good tunes.

Legs & Co. did a pretty good job dancing with Steve Miller's "Rock 'n Me". And, their routine steps were current for the time 1976. I always like the fog, and the glitter costumes were pretty cool.

Pat Benatar is so cute, even today! What a great performance in Germany with "Heartbreaker"! Her band was fantastic! Can you even imagine being able to perform in Germany, or anywhere in Europe? To me, that would be a real treat.

I didn't know "Say I'm Number One" by Princess, but I did enjoy the video. Her stage presence and the stage design made her performance exciting! Shirley & Co. duet...WOW! Shirley and Jesus tore up the stage with their explosive voices! What talent! I remember this song and I still like it.

I loved Gene Pitney-EVERY song he did touched me! His voice was so chilling, even as he changed story lines. I don't remember "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart", but watching his performance certainly brought back to my heart the memories he dredges up with his music. We lost this man too soon!

Speaking of Seaweed, Shady, dear friend...I just happen to have a couple of Salmon steaks ready to grill or just sear! Guess I'll have to freeze one of them for a later date. Scootie won't eat fish or much red meat! '...sigh'
I enjoyed your post, Shady. Have a wonderful week, we've got lovely sunshine in the upper 50's, and that works for me! Take care, dear friend!♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

How are you today, dear friend? Thanks for joining me on an all expenses paid trip around the world to Bandstands in Foreign Lands!

1976 was an interesting year on Top Of The Pops. It was the only year that three different dance troupes performed on the show. Pan's People were still on the show through April that year. Ruby Flipper was the name of the dance company that replaced them and appeared from May through October. Beginning in November the hoofers were called Legs & Co. Steve Miller's "Rock'n Me" was hot on the chart in October and November that year, and therefore this clip must be one of the first performances by Legs & Co. I recognize the cute short haired blonde as a member of Ruby Flipper. Some members of the three main TOTP dance troupes overlapped in this manner. Sadly a good number of those lovely ladies have already died.

Yessum, Pat Benatar was one of the cutest women in rock and I love this early career performance by Pat and her band in Germany. It must have been a thrill for American artists to fly to Europe and encounter so many fans in other countries.

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed British Whitney Houston soundalike Princess and especially that you are the first to give a thumbs up to Shirley (And Company). I remember "Shame Shame Shame" very well from my clubbing years. It was a giant hit in my region. Notice how the two disco numbers, "I Love To Love" and "Shame Shame Shame" have the same groove going?

I am also delighted that you are giving props to prolific singer and songwriter Gene Pitney, an enormous talent who died too soon. If you watched that video all the way through as I did, I'm sure the exquisite song and Gene's fine performance brought tears. It should have been a hit!

Gosh, you're making me hungry, Suzanne. Like Scootie I don't like red meat very much, but I do eat lots of fish. Salmon is a favorite. I wish I were there right now so that I could could pull up a seat at your dinner table. :) I hope at the very least your cool autumn breeze blows the aroma across the Gulf and into my nostrils. :)

I'm delighted you got so much enjoyment from the post. Thanks again for coming on a Sunday and have a safe and happy week ahead, dear friend Suzanne!

  4. Surprisingly, I only recognized a couple of these. As for Gene Pitney, I know he's best known for pop, but the only thing of his I ever knew (and still love!) is Liberty Valance. Shame, Shame, Shame sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't say I particularly like that clip. ;)

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks a lot for coming to the latest BIFL party, dear friend!

I'm guessing you know the Pat Benatar and Steve Miller songs, because I know you like classic rock and don't like disco and urban club sounds as much. Talented as he was, Gene Pitney never had a chart-topping hit. Beginning in 1961 with "(I Wanna) Love My Life Away," Gene had a hot streak going with two top 5 hits, two top 10 hits and others not far below. Starting in 1965 Gene began to struggle and his singles peaked lower and lower on the chart. The fine song featured here remained at the very bottom of the Bubbling Under survey in the U.S. but was a top 5 hit in the UK.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Kelly!

  5. I though I saw Pat Benatar playing air guitar for a moment there. I agree with you that this was her best song. Hard rock suited her voice, but I think her slight built and overall cuteness may have made her not look the part. Or at least someone thought there was a bigger audience for her as a pop goddess. Remember, this was the MTV era. Appearances mattered.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming by, good buddy! ZAP - you're Biffled!

Yes, I saw Pat playing air guitar while her band mate was playing his solo for realsies. More artists than I can count start out doing edgy material and gradually drift toward the mainstream. It always bothers me when they sell out to the establishment instead of continuing to stick it to the man. I didn't know what to make of "Love Is A Battlefield." It seemed to be a rock parody of some sort, but it didn't work for me, even though it was a major hit on MTV and also played heavily on the MTV style station where I worked at the time. You're right. Video killed the radio star but, with her model looks, Pat B had nothing to fear.

Thanks again for being here on a weekend, good buddy Kirk, and have a super week ahead!

    1. Hey, John!

Welcome back to Shady's Place, my old friend! I'm thankful that you remember the late, great Gene Pitney, one of the most distinctive voices of our generation, a life that ended too soon. When Gene's velvet voice fell silent it was an incalculable loss to music. Like many other solo artists in the U.S., Gene seemed old school to audiences and record buyers enthralled by British and American rock bands.

Thanks again for coming by, John, and have a great week!

  8. Pat Benatar is up for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. I am voting for her though we were a little less than impressed by the last show we saw at the Mountain Winery. Usually they put on a great performance but for some reason she specifically requested no pictures to be taken which really bummed me out. I do not take photos for monetary gain, merely for inclusion in the scrapbook album of concerts that I am making. Also, they did a few songs using canned music instead of the band which seemed like a cop out to us. She hasn't aged a bit in all these years and her hubby is gray but still can play that guitar! Have a great week!

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks for globetrotting with me as we visit Bandstands in Foreign Lands, dear friend!

Thanks for the update on Pat Benatar. I should have known you have seen at least one of her recent shows. I'm sorry to learn that her concert was a disappointment for the reasons you outlined. It doesn't send a positive message or set a positive tone to tell the audience they cannot take pictures, and who wants to hear canned music at a live show? Madonna had a rough week on the concert circuit, too, and I'm sure you read about that fiasco. It fascinates me how some artists, groups and bands of the past are still energetic and put on a killer show while others seem to have overstayed their welcome in the public eye.

Thanks again for taking this musical journey with me, dear friend Janet, and have a super week ahead!

  9. Tom,

BANDSTANDS IN FOREIGN LANDS Vol 12 did not disappoint this gal! You caught my interest with your opening song 'Heartbreaker' by everyone's favorite rocker chick, Pat Benntar. You had me up boogieing to 'Rockin' Me' with the Legs & Company troop. While I know Gene Pitney by name, your song feature is new to me. Your last three featured artists and songs are introductions. It blows my mind that I didn't recognize Tina Charles' #2 chart stopper from 1976. Of the three new ladies, I really like Princess' sound. I will certainly look her up on YT. Thanks for incredible share. You always put the mewsic in me when I stop by for visits. I hope your eye is feeling like normal now. Have a great week, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming along on the 12th Biffle tour.

I am thrilled that you found so many performances to enjoy in this set, beginning with the pure girl-rock sound of Pat Benatar on a bandstand I am presenting for the first time in this series, the music show "Rock Pop" which originated from Munich, Germany. I know you appreciate feminine beauty, and therefore I figured you'd like the Legs & Co dancers' interpretation of that Steve Miller hit. Tina Charles is a wonderful discovery. I didn't know about her during the disco era, but apparently she was a very popular artist of the genre across the pond. "I Love To Love" is her sig-song and biggest hit. Prince was an iconic hit maker, but Princess didn't fare as well, at least not here in the states. In addition to the song featured here (which I also love) Princess placed two other singles on the black chart in the U.S. In 1986 "After The Love Has Gone," a different song from the 1979 hit by Earth, Wind & Fire, approached the top 5 on the Dance chart and just missed the top 40 on the R&B survey. Here's the official music video:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiaBO0HpJq4

Princess made the American chart one last time the following year with "Red Hot" which peaked at #78 R&B. Like you I love the sound and singing style of Princess, very similar to Whitney Houston's, in my opinion.

Thank you for asking about my eye. I still have some bruising around it and some lingering redness, but it seems like it is healing AOK. I have another follow-up exam tomorrow morning. Meanwhile I am sending you well wishes on your latest medical check-up.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Cathy, and have a tunetastic week!

    2. Tom,

I am listening to a YT Tina Charles playlist while I visit you this morning. At some point I might have to share her mewsic on my blog. I love my discoveries thanks to your song features. :) Also, many thanks for sharing the Princess mewsic video. I think I like 'After The Love Has Gone' even better than your feature share. She reminds me a bit of Whitney Houston, too. Oh that's good news that your eye is doing okay. I hope your follow up went well. I'm sorry for not getting back over for a visit before now but it's been kinda crazy with my schedule these past couple of weeks but I hopeyour follow up went well. I can't recall if I asked but will you need to have the procedure on the other eye anytime soon? Gotta jet for now. Have a great weekend, my friend!

    3. Hi, Cathy!

I'm happy to know you are discovering more great song performances by UK disco queen Tina Charles. As you might have noticed, Tina appeared on many "Bandstands in Foreign Lands" during the peak years of her popularity. I am also delighted that you delved into the Princess catalog. "After The Love Has Gone" was her biggest hit in the U.S., finishing at #6 on the Dance chart. Princess performs with pizzazz.

Yessum, although I still have some bruising and redness around my eye, it is doing AOK and the follow-up exam went well. I am back to doing all normal activities again - bending over, exercising, showering, etc. I will eventually need the procedure done to my right eye. I will try to get a time frame for that when I have my third and last follow-up exam next month.

Thanks for returning to chat, dear friend Cathy, and have a boogietastic weekend!

  10. Huge fan of Pat Benatar!! I remember having the 45 record of Heartbreaker when I was in 6th grade living in California. My friends would belt this out over and over at our slumber parties and request it at the skating rinks. I think its great that she married her guitar player and they've been together forever. Steve Miller is from Texas and I grew up on his music but honestly i'm not a fan. I know I may be the only one that doesn't like him for miles and miles.

    1. Hi, Holli!

I'm very happy to see you back here at Shady's Place, dear friend. Welcome and thanks for coming over!

It's good to know you are a fan of rock chic Pat B. Thanks for sharing that she got hitched to her band's guitar player. I also thank you for flashing us back to the years when we used to run out to the record store to buy vinyl singles after we heard a song we liked on the radio or saw the artist perform it on TV. I also remember popular recordings being played over the P-A system at roller and ice skating rinks. It's interesting that the style of Texas rocker Steve Miller doesn't appeal to you very much. I enjoy his work, but admit that he is not one of my top favorites of the genre.

Thanks again for your visit and kind comments, dear friend Holli. Please take good care of yourself until I see you again! :)

  11. Surprise! I made it back within a fortnight.

For some reason, the idea of a no-work holiday seems to have nestled itself in my home office, and I’m not getting near as much done as I’d planned. I did, however, enjoy this post ;-)

It was good to see Pat Benatar again. I have a keen appreciation for pintsized people with powerful voices.

Hearing Steve Miller made me want to hear more. “Swingtown” might be just the trick to get me back on the working track (now that the sun is setting – ha!)
I would not have recognized Gene Pitney’s voice, at first, and was relieved when he started sounding more like the days of “Liberty Valance” and “It Hurts to Be in Love.” He had a voice I always thought could bring a junkyard dog to tears. The anguish seemed so genuine. I’m not positive, but I think my great G-ma had his songs on 78 rpm records.

Can you imagine the (additional) following Reverend Alvarez must have with musical talent like that? He and Shirley sound terrific together.

Princess was new to me, though she was just as fresh and strident as others of that era. I guess her music didn’t make it this far west, but ‘Say I’m Your Number One” would undoubtedly have been fun to dance to.

Thanks for the entertainment, dear Shady!

    1. Hi, diedre!

I am elated to see you, dear friend! Thanks a lot for coming to see me for the second time this month.

I'm delighted you had fun on the 12th Biffle tour featuring Pat Benatar, the little lady with powerful pipes. Steve Miller and his band racked up an impressive string of hits and I was fortunate to find this high quality video of Legs & Co doing a dance routine to one of Miller's most popular songs, albeit a surprisingly low charting single at the time of its release. I'm glad you appreciate Gene Pitney's singing talent. I could listen to his velvet voice all day and night. Jason Alvarez was born Jesús Alvarez, a great name for a minister. After making his mark as a secular recording artist with Shirley (And Company), Jesús switched to the categories of Contemporary Christian, Christian R&B, Jesus Music and Worship. I don't know much about those styles or how they differ from one another. Shirley Goodman, his singing partner on the hit "Shame Shame Shame," died in 2005. The writer of the song, Sylvia Robinson aka "The Mother of Hip–Hop" passed away in 2011. Princess is a fine singer and deserved a greater measure of success. She placed four of her singles on the U.S. Dance chart and three of them also made the R&B chart. Back home in the UK, Princess had seven charting singles including a top 10, a top 20 a top 30 and a top 40. To me she was the UK's answer to Whitney Houston.

It gives me great pleasure to entertain you, dear friend diedre. Thanks again for swinging by and have a wonderful week!

Thank you very much for coming to visit, dear friend. I am always happy to see you!

With your interest in clothing styles down through the years it comes as no surprise that Legs & Co caught your attention. I try to include one of their choreographed dance routines in each edition of my Bandstands series. The various all-female troupes that performed on Top Of The Pops in London were known for their flamboyant outfits. It is reported that many male admirers gathered in the studio to watch their dress rehearsals. Each man had a favorite dancer and marriage proposals were common.

Thank you again for joining me at Shady's Place. Take good care of yourself and your lovely family and please come see me again soon, dear friend Katia!
