Helen Ettline - Every Dell Rat's Mom:
He's Gone to Cha Cha Cha Up On The Roof

 Shady Dell owner Helen Ettline
didn't have any children of her own.
In a way, we were all her kids
 and she was our mom.

Clearly Helen & John
loved kids. Why else
would they have
put up with the
aggravation all
those years?

The Ettlines
believed in kids.
They enjoyed
counseling and
helping kids.

The pictures above and below remind me ever so much of Helen's snack bar
and the jukebox in the adjoining room where rows of diner booths were located.

To remember and honor
Helen on Mother's Day,
I picked four songs that
I think she would enjoy.
Helen, these are for you.

 LITTLE ANTHONY
 AND THE IMPERIALS

Over the years, on Helen's special days, I have often played
"Two People In The World," by Little Anthony And The Imperials.
I refer to the ballad as "Helen's Song" because I remember it
being played so many times on the snack bar jukebox.

Today, as we honor Helen on Mother's Day, I'd like to spin another
Little Anthony classic. From the fall of 1964, here is the group's
top 20 comeback hit, a song written by Teddy Randazzo and
Bobby Weinstein. Little Anthony And The Imperials sing--
"I'm On The Outside (Looking In)."

"I'm On The Outside (Looking In)" - Little Anthony And The Imperials
(Sept./Oct. 1964, highest chart pos. #15 Hot 100 & R&B/#20 Cash Box

 THE DRIFTERS

"The Second Drifters" is the name given in 1958 to the new lineup
of the veteran doo-wop/R&B/Soul group. In 1961, The Drifters
got another makeover when Rudy Lewis joined as lead singer.

Lewis led the group on a string of polished, sophisticated, orchestrated hits
of the pre-Beatles early 60s. I think Helen would enjoy this song, one of the
group's biggest successes of the period. Written by the Brill Building team
of Gerry Goffin and Carole King, the song reminds city dwellers that
they can escape the hustle and bustle of life on the street and
shed their cares and woes  -- "Up On The Roof."

"Up On The Roof" - The Drifters
(Dec. 1962/Jan. 1963, highest chart pos.
#4 R&B/#5 Hot 100/#6 Cash Box)

 THE CHANTELS

Up next, the angelic harmonies of The Chantels, the pioneering Bronx-
based African-American R&B girl group of the 50s led by Arlene Smith.

The Chantels gained their first charting record in the fall of 1957 with
a song written by Arlene. The single made a dent in the pop chart
but, oddly, didn't show up on the R&B survey. Listen now to
this glorious ballad, one of The Chantels' best recordings
and a classic of the genre -- "He's Gone."

"He's Gone" - The Chantels
(Oct. 1957, highest chart pos. #71 Hot 100)

 SAM COOKE

To complete this year's Mother's Day song serenade for Helen,
here's singer/songwriter Sam Cooke with one of his biggest R&B hits.

It's a song Sam wrote about the cha-cha-cha, a Cuban dance that gained
widespread popularity in America in the late 50s. Released at the start
of 1959, Sam's single reached #2 on the R&B chart and made a run
at the top 30 on the pop side. The young folks in the audience were
chewing up a storm as Sam appeared on Dick Clark's Saturday Night
Beechnut Show and declared-- "Everybody Likes to Cha Cha Cha!"

"Everybody Likes To Cha Cha Cha" - Sam Cooke
(Mar. thru May 1959, highest chart pos. #2 R&B,
#31 Hot 100, performance on Mar. 14, 1959, ep.
of Dick Cark's Saturday Night Beechnut Show

 Happy Mother's Day, Helen!

    1. Hi, Alex!

By golly, you are the latest Early Bird in the history of Shady's Place, good buddy! :) Thanks for breaking away from your Mother's Day celebrations to pay a visit to my clubhouse and pay respects to Helen Ettline - the First Lady of the Shady.

Yes, Alex, we all say it every year. Helen was proof that a biological link is not necessary in order for an adult to be a great role model and parent figure in a young person's life. I'm glad you like this year's 4-song Mother's Day tribute.

Thanks again for coming, good buddy Alex. Have a terrific week ahead!

  2. What a lovely MD tribute to Helen! I know she would've loved the music you picked out to honor her. :) All of your song picks are great but Little Anthony and the Imperials was superb! Belated Happy Mother's Day wishes to Mrs. Shady. I hope her day was extra special, my friend. Have a boogietastic week!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for dropping by, dear friend!

I'm glad you like the MD song selections in honor of Helen Ettline. Helen loved group harmony and satiny soul sounds, and Little Anthony and his group always came through in that regard. In fact, all of these groups plus solo singer Sam Cooke gave us smooth grooves that have stood the test of time.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Cathy. Have a safe and happy week!

    2. Thanks for stopping by today and passing on what's going on in your life. It all sounds so exciting! I will keep you and Mrs. Shady in my prayers. Take care and enjoy this adventure!

    3. Thank you, dear Cathy! Prayers are indeed needed, because today we needed to drop what we were doing and take our beloved pet cat Boots to the vet and have him put to sleep. Overnight he developed leg paralysis that the doctor believes was caused by a blood clot. Suddenly, Boots couldn't walk or use the litter box. It was a hopeless situation and we needed to make the tough decision to end his life. We are all deeply saddened, but have fond memories of knowing and loving Boots for the last dozen years or more.

I'll be over to see you in the morning. Bless you, Cathy!

    4. Tom,

My heart is heavy for you and Mrs. Shady. That was a tough, painful decision but the right one. Your Boots needed to make the journey across the Rainbow Bridge where there is no more pain or sorrow. Now, she feels like a kitten again. I hope you find peace and comfort in the memories created with your beloved family member. Maybe, your home can once again be home to a new kitty in the future. Sending hugs, love, and prayers to you both, my friend.

  4. Happy Mother's day to Helen who had many children. She, and her husband, changed the lives of so many and that's a great accomplishment. I love the tunes you chose especially the one by the Drifters.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm delighted to have you on hand for this year's feature honoring Helen on Mother's Day. Yessum, over the decades the Shady Dell was in operation, Helen was a role model and mother figure to hundreds of lucky, grateful area teenagers, myself and Mrs. Shady #1 included.

So far we have one upvote for The Imperials and one for The Drifters. How about that unique music video of the group singing on a city rooftop and handling (manhandling?) pigeons? That alone is worth the price of admission, don't you agree? :)

Thanks again for being here for my MD salute to Helen. Enjoy your week, dear friend BB!

  5. I was happy to hear Up on the Roof as it reminded me of my Mom. She lived in an apartment building and said she would go up on the roof in the Summer and to some of her friend's apartment buildings that were near hers to hang out. Once she was up on her friend's roof and could see the roof of her building and was shocked to see the still that her Dad used to make whiskey! Back then they made whiskey in the bathtub and were always worried about Government men coming and arresting them! She figured if she could see it then anyone could...including officials! It was an art form I think in her family because when we would attend a funeral or some other gathering, Mom always came home with a bottle of 150 proof...medicinal of course...to be used for sore throats! So Happy Mother's Day to Helen who loved many children although having none of her own. Happy Mother's Day to Mrs. Shady and to my sweet Mom who is missed every day. Take care Shady!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Happy Mother's Day to you and all the other mothers in your large family, dear friend! Yessum, I've been thinking about your dear mother on this occasion, and know that you and Midge miss her tremendously. I miss seeing pictures of her in your posts year after year.

Isn't it great to learn that your mother was "Up On The Roof" in her younger years, hanging out on the roof of her apartment building and those of friends? Thanks for sharing that interesting tidbit along with the story about the whiskey making still that her dad used. I don't know if I'd be willing to drink anything that was made in a bathtub, but I suppose they did whatever they had to do. Back in the day, I used to drink Ron Rico 151 proof rum. I just checked and see that they still sell it.

Thank you again for your kind visit and interesting anecdotes. I'm glad you appreciate this year's MD tribute to Helen Ettline - Every Dell Rat's Mom. Take care and have a wonderful week, dear friend YaYa!

  6. Happy Mother's Day to Helen and to all the mother's. I'm sure she would have appreciated this.

    1. Hi, Mary!

Hooray, dear friend - your comment stayed put this time! :) Thanks for coming to pay Mother's Day respects to Shady Dell owner Helen Ettline - The Mother Of All Dell Rats.

I'm glad you know at least one of these soulful oldies. I agree. "Up On The Roof" isn't heard very often nowadays. For that matter, neither are "Under The Boardwalk," "I've Got Sand In My Shoes," "On Broadway" or "Saturday Night At The Movies." All four of those songs were hits for The Drifters in the early to mid 60s.

Thanks again for stopping in, dear friend Mary. Have a super week!

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for checking out my 2023 Mother's Day salute to Helen Ettline, good buddy!

Of the four songs, The Drifters' single was the highest charting hit on the pop chart, which explains why it is best known to most people who have commented. Sam Cooke's "Cha Cha Cha" dance ditty charted highest of all on the R&B chart, yet no one has mentioned it.

Thanks again for coming by, good buddy Kirk, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  8. Hi Shady, When I see a picture of Helen on your blog, I immediately think of all the good she did in her life. A wonderful person. I wish I could have gone to the Shady Dell when I was a teen. I would have loved it.

I really liked all the songs, but liked "Up on the Roof," the best. I heard that song a lot when I was listening to the Golden Oldies. As I was watching the video, it made me think of the song and dance in the movie, "West Side Story."
I don't remember, "Everybody Loves the Cha, Cha, Cha." It's a great song. Haven't heard, "He's Gone," either but definitely loved the Chantels. Their harmony is so good.

I knew "I'm On the Outside Looking In." Love it too. Like Helen, I loved group harmony songs. A lot of the songs I listen to now are bands that have a lot of harmony singing in them. Music is so enriching, it takes me far above the world and its troubles. God bless, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Belle!

I am overjoyed to see you back here at Shady's Place, dear sister friend! I hope you and your family are all well and in good spirits.

Thanks for expressing kind words about Shady Dell First Lady Helen Ettline as I present my annual Mother's Day tribute to her. Yessum, as I have told you many times over the years, you would have made a fine Dellette and both Helen and John would have loved and welcomed you.

"Up On The Roof" is consistently mentioned as the best known of these four songs. Thanks for sharing that it is your favorite. It was written by the veteran Brill Building husband and wife composing team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The pair also penned the Drifters hit "Some Kind Of Wonderful." Another prolific Brill Building husband and wife songwriting team, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, penned the Drifters hit "On Broadway." I think everyone can relate to "Up On The Roof" because it is about escaping the hustle and bustle of life, the crowding, noise, violence and chaos, finding an oasis high above the fray and experiencing peace of mind, a natural high that does not involve the use of drugs and alcohol. All four songs in this lineup are the type that Helen enjoyed listening to on her jukebox in the snack bar.

Yessum, you can see that Sam Cooke's "Cha Cha Cha" was the biggest R&B hit of all and that it crossed over to become a top 30 hit on the pop chart, enough to draw an invitation to perform the song on Dick Clack's Saturday Night Beechnut Show.

You are the first to mention The fabulous Chantels and their churchified ballad "He's Gone." The song is just inches across the borderline that separates secular music from gospel.

Little Anthony and group consistently laid down soulful, silky smooth songs that were well received by white audiences, essential to the long term success of black recording acts.

I am thrilled to know that the group harmony sound takes you "Up On The Roof" to a place where you feel safe, happy and free. That's the power of good music, so important to our daily lives and wellbeing.

Thank you ever so much for your cheery visit and terrific comment, dear friend Belle, Please take good care of yourself, think happy thoughts and join me again for more music and fun here at Shady's Place Music & Memories. God bless!

  9. My Dear Shady, I am so sorry to be so late to the party here. I read some of the previous comments and I am saddened to learn of your poor Boots. Having had to put down two cats who I wasn't even that attached to was hard enough so I'm sending you and Mrs. Shady lots of sympathy.

I see I totally missed the AA meeting in the previous post. I liked her in Trouble With the Curve and Julie and Julia but you highlighted some other ones that I hadn't seen. Thanks for the suggestions.

As for this post, it is a very nice tribute to your friend Helen. I will be honest and say that right now I'm having some real stressors myself and having a place I could go to get away like Up On The Roof would be heavenly.

Again, sorry for the late appearance. Have a terrific rest of your week my friend!

    1. Hi, Janet!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend. Thanks for stopping in to experience this year's Mother's Day tribute to Helen Ettline - Every Dell Rat's Mom.

Yessum, just yesterday we needed to have our pet kitty Boots aka Bootsie-Wootsie aka Tuxedo, put to sleep. Boots entered our lives as a stray circa 2010 or 2011, and we fed him outside until we moved away to Venice, FL, in early 2015. At that time, members of Mrs. Shady's family moved into our house and kept feeding him. We moved back here in early 2020 and decided that Boots was getting too old to remain an outdoor stray. We took him in and he enjoyed more than three happy years with us as our house pet. Diagnosed with FIV, a condition that rendered him unadoptable by any family with other pets, Boots became a much loved member of our family. I have never seen a prettier cat and have never known one that was as calm, well mannered and dignified. Two days ago, a blood clot, possibly formed by the onset of heart disease or spinal disease, suddenly cut off the flow of blood to Boots' hind legs. He was collapsing, could hardly walk and could no longer use his litter box. The vet told us his quality of life would probably be poor from that point on, and that the most humane thing to do was to end his suffering. It was a very hard decision for us, and extremely painful to watch as he was given a lethal injection and put to sleep before our eyes, but we believe in our hearts that we did the right thing at the right time and didn't prolong his suffering to avoid ours. Thanks for your sincere expressions of sympathy, dear friend.

Thanks too for commenting here on the Amy Adams post. I know about and look forward to watching Amy in Trouble With The Curve, but Mrs. Shady won't agree to watch it with me. She loves baseball movies like League Of Their Own and Field Of Dreams, but she refuses to watch "Curve" because of Clint Eastwood's politics. She loved Forrest Gump until she found out about Gary Sinise, and now she won't touch the film with a ten foot pole. She loves Meryl Streep and we watched J&J together and also have it on DVD.

I am sorry to learn that you are experiencing unusual amounts of stress lately. I hope it passes soon. In addition to the loss of our pet, Mrs. Shady and I are dealing with stress as we prepare to move more than 1,000 miles away to a new house we just bought. A few weeks from now, I will taking a blogging hiatus that will probably last until the end of the year. In the meantime, for your planning purposes, my next post will be published this Saturday.

Thank you again for your kind visit and supportive comments in the wake of our loss. I wish you more peace of mind and less stress in the days ahead. Please give my buddy Benny a hug for me and give thanks for every minute you can spend with your wonderful pet. I hope to see you again soon, dear friend Janet!
