To introduce the songs, I am calling upon the Call Girls -
vintage women shown talking on the telephone,
a common theme in photos of the period.
The Call Girls are staffing a phone bank located
in the penthouse suite of Shady Towers.
The phones are ringing off the hook as the ladies take
song requests called in by SPMM radio listeners.
Based on those phone requests, each Call Girl will play a song for you.
She'll tell you the name of the artist and provide other clues.
The pictures and illustrations that go along with each
song intro also hint at the title. All you need to do is

Hi! I'm Call Betty, one of Abigail Ambrosia's assistants on the Shady's Place
series Ask Abigail and moonlighting as a Call Girl. I have a listener on the line
who wants me to play a popular song of the mid 60s. Co-written by Marvin Gaye,
it has stood the test of time as one of Motown's signature songs. It was originally
recorded by Martha And The Vandellas, resulting in a #2-charting crossover hit
for the girl group in 1964. My caller wants to hear the groovy cover waxed
by The Mamas And The Papas and released in November, 1966, on the
B side of their single "Words Of Love." By early 1967, this killer bee
had caught on with listeners to become a minor hit in its own right.

Apparently, the song was a top 3 hit in the summer of 1959.

Anyway, thanks for joining the fun as I introduce another new series dedicated to the music trivia game Name That Tune, and another series in which the focus is on vintage images as much as vintage music.
Being younger as you are, it doesn't surprise me that you failed to guess any of these three boomer oldies based on clues and lyrics. Rules are rules, and a score of zero means that you must wear the dreaded dunce cap. :) However, I hope you had fun learning three new songs and gazing at an array of vintage Call Girl images.

DeleteThis is the first time I've heard the Mamas and the Papas cover of "Dancing in the Streets". While I still prefer the Martha and the Vandells original, this one is pretty good in its own right. Chris Montez cover of "Call Me: is OK, but Petula Clark is Petula Clark after all. I couldn't identify the lyrics on the screen for the third song but recognized "My Heart Is an Open Book" the moment it started playing.

In the spring of 1966, "California Dreamin'" became a solid jukebox hit at The Shady Dell. The Mamas And The Papas, new to me at the time, put down such a groovy new sound that I ran out and bought the single and soon thereafter their debut album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears. That same year, I added the group's singles "Monday, Monday," ""Words Of Love" and "I Saw Her Again." I wasted no time getting familiar with the songs on the album and the B side songs on their 45s. The group's fine cover of "Dancing In The Street" made the "Words Of Love" single a genuine "doublesider." I'm glad you like their version and happy to introduce it to you.
Over the decades, I forgot about Carl Dobkins Jr. and his claim to fame "My Heart Is An Open Book," a top 3 hit from the summer of 1959 and a biggie in my neck of the woods. I'm pleased that you actually recognized the oldie the moment it started playing.
This new Call Girls series, along with Saved By The Dell and two more new series to be launched later this year, will give me an opportunity to share with you hundreds of images of vintage 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s women engaged in various activities or simply posing for the camera. In these series, the photos, cartoons and illustrations will be just as important as the music.

This has been happening with other people, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time it has happened with a comment of yours. It is a worrisome omen. I found your comment just now and published it. On top of that, the folks at Blogger removed this post within minutes of me publishing it Saturday morning. They obviously did so because the title "Call Girls" was suspicious to them and drew red flags. They said I could request a review and I did. Minutes later, after reading the post and discovering that it was quite innocent and did not contain any explicit content, they approved and published it. But I think their original action of deleting it resulted in the post not showing up in search engines. This is day three of the post's run, and so far very few people are even aware that it exists because it did not show up in their reading lists. Since this is the launch of a new series, the same thing is bound to happen every time I publish "Call Girls." It will be an added inconvenience and hassle for me and for my friends and followers.
As if all that weren't enough, your CAAC blog gremlins ate my comment this morning! This is just crazy, isn't it? :)
Hey, I'm tickled that you knew two of the three hidden songs in this first round of Name That Tune. Yessum, I figured you got the first two songs correct and it was the third one that stumped you. I predict the same will happen to most people who play. In each volume of the series, I will structure the game so that at least one song title is a giveaway, perhaps two, but one of the songs will be a toughie that few people know and is harder to guess.

DeleteI'm back from my appointments and errands and taking a break from packing. I am delighted to see that you came to visit Shady's Place while I was away.
Yessum, it was a pleasure to travel with you these last few weeks and see the scenic wonders of Maine and New Hampshire. I truly believe those pictures taken on the last morning at the cove were the most stunning of all.
Like you, I am growing increasingly frustrated by all of the technical glitches involved in blogging, especially in recent months. I am encountering problems leaving comments on other people's blogs, and when I am able to, sometimes they vanish. Comments left by you and several other friends on my site have been swept away to the spam folder. I even found one of my own replies in the spam bin the other day! Can you believe it? Somebody must be feeding the gremlins after midnight. :) On top of that, YouTube routinely removes great songs and videos that I am eager to share with friends like you. Sometimes the videos are removed while the post in which they are embedded is still running live on the front page. It's discouraging.
For all of the above reasons and more, I need to let you know that this will be a transitional year for me and for Shady's Place. I will be reducing my blog presence, posting less frequently and visiting the blogs of others less frequently. With so much to do, and Mrs. Shady constantly on the warpath complaining that I spend too much time blogging, I need to make some big changes. They will probably happen when I return from my long hiatus this fall.
I hope your trip to the dentist yielded good news about what can be done to help you. I hope he doesn't repeat his instruction that you should avoid those yummy donuts you love. :)

I love your contests and I'm usually very bad at them. This time was better, I guess #1 and #2. I didn't recognize the third one until I played it. I really liked that song. I was 9 years old when it came out, but I knew all the words and sang along. Lol. I loved the Mamas and Papas from the first time I heard them, just like you. They were so terrific. "Words of Love" was wonderful, but "California Dreaming" was always my favorite. I felt sorry for all the teens who didn't live where I lived. Great weather and great beaches.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard the song, "Call Me," sung by Carl Dobkins. He had a nice voice, but of course, I liked Petula Clark's rendition better. She was also one of my favorite singers. Very fun listening to these iconic songs, Shady. I think if you re-named your series, "Virgin Call Girls" it might make it past the censors. I'm sorry few people saw it, I hope some more do and come on over.

When all is said and done, I will be offering three different series that challenge you to play the music trivia game Name That Tune. In each series and every game, I will include three songs. Two should be easy to guess, especially for people born during the post-WWII baby boom. One song will be harder for most people to guess. You are the second friend to state that you didn't know #3 until you started playing it. I had forgotten all about the golden oldie until I came across it recently on YouTube. This video brings it back alive in brilliant remastered stereo, sounding better than we ever heard it back then. I'm delighted that you agree it's a great song, and thank you for sharing that you enjoyed singing along when you were a girl.
Yessum, in a short period of time, The Mamas And The Papas recorded a wealth of excellent sunshine pop nuggets, including the A and B sides of their singles and album tracks that were not issued as singles. To correct you if I may, it was your LA-based neighbor - singer and guitarist Chris Montez, who had a hit with song #2 - "Call Me," - while Carl Dobkins did song #3 - "Open Book." At one point in my record collecting career, I owned all three of Chris Montez's biggest hits: "Let's Dance," "The More I See You" and "Call Me." Do you remember those other two songs I just mentioned?
So, to sum it up, most people will be able to guess one or two of the song titles in each round, but the third will be more challenging. As you see, I will often post a high quality cover version of a mystery song rather than the original hit by the original artist. This gives me an opportunity to present material that has never before appeared on either of my blogs.
Yessum, Call Girls is a series that I might have difficulty getting published, and it might not get picked up by search engines that feed blog reading lists. I think Virgin Call Girls makes it sound even more X-rated. :) I think what I will do is go around and personally notify all of my regular friends and followers each time I publish a volume of this series so that they'll know to look for it.

I thought for sure the clues and lyrics would lead you to guess the Motown classic "Dancing In The Street" and the title that refers to two different songs - "Call Me." Well this was fun! I got 2 of the 3. I have not heard My Heart is an Open Book before. I'm sorry I didn't get to this before we went away but the 20th is our anniversary (39 years this year!) and we left for Vegas on the 21st so I was a bit busy. Turning to The Call Girls and their version of Name That Tune, I'm delighted that you correctly guessed 2 out of 3 songs, the same score as several other friends who played the game. "Open Book" was a biggie in my neck of the woods, but I am sensing that it wasn't as well known or heavily played on the radio in other parts of the country. That said, my friend Belle (above) who spent her youth in California's Inland Empire, commented that she remembered the song from childhood as soon as she started playing it.
I'm delighted that you got a kick out of my new series. Believe it or not, Blogger.com deleted my post minutes after it was published, because the title "Call Girls" sent up flags that it might be a XXX-rated post. :) Fortunately, they allowed me to file an appeal, and soon thereafter, it was republished. I hope this doesn't happen with every volume of the series!
