"My Boy Lollipop" - Aoife Leonard
(Feb. 2020)
Kicking off my first show, that was 17 year old Irish singer Aoife Leonard
with her cover of "My Boy Lollipop," a song written by Robert Spencer of
the doo-wop group The Cadillacs and originally titled "My Girl Lollypop."
In 2020, Shady introduced Barbie Gaye, the girl who first waxed the
song with the gender switched to "My Boy Lollypop." In late 1956,
Barbie's single was a hit in New York and a few other cities in the
Northeast. In that same post, you met Millie Small, the young
ska singer who gained an international hit with the song in
1964. Aoife Leonard, the Irish teen you just saw and
heard, is an avid fan of American country music.
Her influences include country legends Tammy
Wynette, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton.

You just enjoyed a double dose of McCartney, two hit love songs

which topped the U.S. chart in the spring of '73, was penned
by Paul as a love song for wife Linda. Before that you heard
"Silly Love Songs," a #1 charting answer to critics, including
former writing partner and Beatles band mate John Lennon,
who said Paul wrote and sang too many sentimental songs.

To play us off, here are The Spinners, the mighty Motown men of the 60s who
found their greatest success when they switched to the Atlantic label in the early
70s. From the spring of '73, this is their third chart-topping single on the R&B
chart - "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)." Now this is Meg Griffin giving a shout-

to you, my wonderful listeners. Please remember...all you need is love. So long!

ReplyDeleteHi, Kelly & Pat!
DeleteYou guys are the Early Birds again this week, dear friend! Thank you both for coming over so quickly to sample the sounds in Meg Griffin's first radio show.
I'm delighted that you named the showender by The Spinners as your Pick to Click, and that you also found two other faves in Meg's lineup. I hope you left here with three earworms to carry you through your day.
Thanks again for being here and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Kelly!
I just read an article on Andy Gibb and his death. Very tragic he died so young.
ReplyDeleteHi, Alex!
DeleteThanks for taking a peek at the post, good buddy!
Yes, Andy Gibb had just turned age 30 when he died. Years of coke use plus depression over losing Dallas dazzler Pam Ewing (Victoria Principal) proved too much for him to bear. Andy's is only one of the many tragic stories in rock history.
Thanks again for dropping by, good buddy Alex!
I'm doing a test...let's see if this comment works
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteYessum, your test comment went through, and it's good as gold, because it, along with my reply, helps boost my miserably low comment total. Thank you!
Grrrr...I tried 3 times and my computer.e t would not take but it seems to work now. Ok...listened to this on my lunch hour today. Aoife ( how do you say her name) sang this song so well and without all the yelling and macabre ways singers contort their face to sing I like her voice.
ReplyDeletePaul McCartney and Linda had a great love story and I love both songs especially the 2nd one. I knew the silly one was meant for Lennon in some way. I think Lennon was jealous of McCartney.
Poor Andy had a good hit with this song but just died way too young
Joanne has a great voice and I could easily see her do a James Bond theme.
My Love and this Frankie Valli song are 2 I wish my hubby would play and say he is thinking of me:)).
The Spinners had a good hit with the last song and maybe this will be the song that will get that animated gal a date. I am here and I hope this comment takes.
Hi, Birgit!
DeleteThank you for very for persisting until you got a comment through, dear friend. Seems like everybody's having problems leaving comments these days. I am having difficulty posting them on several other friends' blogs. I don't know what's going on.
I'm pleased that you singled out Irish teenager Aoife Leonard. I agree that her no-nonsense singing style is a refreshing departure from the flamboyant, overwrought performances we often see.
I'm glad you give a nod to Paul McCartney's "My Love" song and to Frankie Valli's solo biggie "Can't Take My Eyes off You." I was thrilled to find that newly enhanced version of Frankie's hit and knew it would be ideal to insert in Meg's show #1 playlist.
Yessum, Andy Gibb had a very short life, just having turned 30 when he passed away early in 1988. Joanie Sommers is a vocalist primarily known for recording and performing jazz and pop standards. She crossed over with the teen pop hit "Johnny Get Angry" and tried to repeat her success with "Don't Pity Me." It's a pity the song sold poorly and missed the chart because it is an excellent recording. I'm also happy to know you appreciated the Spinners hit to conclude the show. Meg's and Rondo's was truly a "One Of A Kind Love Affair."
Thanks again for being here for me this week, dear friend BB. Please give my good buddy Harley a hug and enjoy the rest of your week and weekend!
Hi Shady,
ReplyDeleteI'll visit again tomorrow. Feeling emotional... Tommy said he needed to be single for a bit to figure things out. He marked himself as single on Facebook. He's done this before and has come back. I hope he comes back this time. I just can't read this post right now.
Happy Thankful Thursday, dear friend.
Hi Jessica Marie!
DeleteHappy Thankful Thursday to you as well, dear friend! Oh no, I'm sorry to learn that Tommy needs some space again, just when it seemed like you and he were rolling right along. Don't panic. As you well know, this has happened before. These are the growing pains common to many relationships. I'd say take him at his word. He says he needs time to figure things out. That's fair. Meanwhile, you have lots for which to be thankful, and many interesting, fun and exciting solo activities to enjoy.
Come on back when you are feeling more in the mood to sing and dance. Take care, dear friend JM!
That's true, dear friend. I need some space too; I've been feeling depressed as I have summer depression. This inflation has gotten to me too.
DeleteTommy wanted to go to NYC for a BMX Jam. I asked him when it was. I said to him, "I have to catsit for Terry next weekend. I also have a dental appointment because my gums have been hurting. I need to go. Not only that, staycations are going to be a thing for a bit because of inflation. You're more than welcome to stay at Terry's and at my house." He has to watch his finances too and I'm thinking we're both feeling it.
Thanks for understanding, dear friend.
Yessum, fun as they are, those Airbnb getaways deplete the budget. Staycations are a great and affordable alternative. There are all kinds of ways to make them interesting for little or no cost.
DeleteKeep in mind that Tommy has followed this pattern all through your relationship. Sometimes, when things get going really well, he needs to slow down and back off a little. I understand the phenomenon because I have been on both sides of it over the years.
Thanks again for stopping by, dear friend JM!
Good evening Shady! A wonderful post and I certainly loved Paul and Wings and those silly love songs! Such a wonderful couple and a sad loss for Paul. I knew all the songs except the one from Joanie Sommers. The 70's was full of romantic songs and even though I wasn't going to too many romantic dances by the mid 70's I must have had some romance as I had a couple of my boys by then! Ha! In one of the videos I swear I saw Jack with his giant white boy fro! Good times. Rondo sure looks like a guy we did a colonoscopy on the other day...I kid you not! Now I know why he looked familiar! I hope you have a good weekend ahead but I know you're heart is hurting after the passing of your dear cousin Paula. Many hugs and prayers for you and your family at this unexpected loss. Thank you so much for your sweet and encouraging words for me on my post. I hope you can find comfort in the days ahead. Take care Tom.
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteThank you very much for coming over to lift your spirits and mine with some badly needed music and fun, dear friend! Your comment about Paula touches me deeply, Kathleen, and it is very much appreciated. You have experienced tremendous loss in the last couple of years, and now I have some idea how you felt much of the time. Yet, true to YaYa form, you soldiered on as you always do. Someone who commented on your blog remarked that you are strong. I second that. To me, you are a symbol of strength. We are all behind you as you face your challenges, and it is comforting to know that you are there to offer kind and caring words when a friend is hurting. Thank you!
I'm glad you got some enjoyment from Meg's first radio show. I introduced and discussed Rondo in Meg's sneak preview a year or so ago but, in case you missed it, Rondo Hatton was a fascinating character. He gained fame in movies playing gangster goons and night creepers but, before he turned to acting, he was a respected journalist for the Tampa Tribune newspaper right here in my neck of the woods. In high school here in Tampa, he was a track and football star and, believe it or not, was voted Handsomest Boy in his class his senior year. After World War I, symptoms of acromegaly developed, distorting Rondo's head and facial features. This led to his acting career playing scary looking brutes. What an interesting man, though!
Yaya, I am so grateful to have a friend like you. Since 2013, you have been like a member of the family. Your happiness is mine and so is your sadness. It's good to know it works both ways. Thank you again for making time to drop by, dear friend YaYa!
Aoife Leonard is adorable, and I'll be sure to look for more of her songs, because she has a fantastic voice. Joanie Summers, likewise, though I'm pretty sure her songs are all oldies by now.
ReplyDeleteFrankie Valli topped the WLS Silver Dollar Survey with "You're Just Too Good To Be True" for a bunch of weeks, and it pissed off a bunch of us who wanted something by the Beatles to be at the top, but as I've gotten older, I can really appreciate how good a song it is.
And The Spinners were one of the many groups and bands that made the '70's a great time for Soul and R&B. I loved 'em.
Great hits this week! Meg did a fine job, though she didn't play her father's favorite song....
Hi, John!
DeleteIt's nice of you to stop by, good buddy! Meg & Rondo say hello and welcome.
I'm delighted that you singled out fresh faced Irish teenager Aoife Leonard doing her cover of "My Boy Lollipop." She's a wonderful find, and we need to keep an eye and ear on her. I am also glad you are giving props to songstress Joanie Sommers. Once billed as "The Voice of the Sixties," Joanie is best known for her work in pop standards and jazz. In 1960, she charted with "One Boy," a song from the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie starring Dick Van Dyke. Then came the uncharacteristic teen pop hit "Johnny Get Angry" in the early summer of 1962. In October that same year, Joanie held on to the lower rungs of the chart with her single "When The Boys Get Together." "Don't Pity Me," released in the spring of '65, failed to chart, but history has been kind. Many consider "Don't Pity Me" to be Joanie's best recording, and today the original label single is highly regarded and worth a pretty penny (more than $1,000) to record collectors. Joanie is 81 years old now, so I am not expecting much in the way of new releases.
Thanks for sharing the story of how Frankie Valli battled The Beatles for the top spot on Chicago radio. I'm pleased that you also liked Meg's showender by The Spinners, a Motown group that reinvented itself and found its greatest success on Atlantic, scoring a dozen or more hits on the label during the 70s and early 80s.
Thanks again for coming over, John, and remember this, good buddy:
"The Bird is the word." :)
Andy Gibb and Frankie Valli are both people that I recognized right away. I like those songs. I am still a big fan of the Bee Gees, it's so sad that so many of the brothers have passed away.
ReplyDeleteI was never a fan of Paul McCartney or The Beetles. Just wasn't my kind of music.
Hi, Mary!
DeleteThanks a lot for coming by, dear friend! Wouldn't you know it... I found your comment in my spam bin! Seems like it happens every other week. I'm so sorry for not finding it sooner.
Yessum, Barry Gibb will be 76 years old a few weeks from now. He is the only surviving member of the Bee Gees. Andy died very young followed by Maurice and Robin. I'm glad that you are a Bee Gees fan and that you recognized and like the biggies by Andy Gibb and Frankie Valli on Meg's playlist.
Thanks again for commenting, even if you sometimes need to wait to see your words in print. I wish the blog gremlins would leave your comments alone. I am always careful not to feed them after midnight.
Have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Mary!
I really liked this line-up. Ms. Leonard did a fantastic cover of My Boy Lollipop. Gorgeous voice. It made me happy to see Paul McCartney twice! Lol. My favorite Beatle. I always feel sad when I see Linda, they loved each other so much. I remember going to see the movie, Moulin Rouge, and they sang Silly Love Songs. His songs will last as long as this world does.
ReplyDeleteI remember Joanie Summers. She also had a great voice. Johnny Get Angry was a favorite, Don't Pity Me, was lovely. I think Frankie Valli's song was on the radio so much, I still know every word. Lol. I don't remember the Spinners at all I'm afraid, but I like them. Thanks for the fun, Shady. God bless.
Hi, Belle!
DeleteI'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for joining the fun as Meg Griffin launches her new radio show, Frantic Romantic, exclusively here at Shady's Place.
Yessum, Meg's show seems tailor made for your musical tastes. She plays the great love songs of the 20th century along with worthy covers released in the 21st. You are not alone in liking Irish teenager Aoife Leonard's cover of "My Boy Lollipop."
I knew you'd appreciate a double dose of Beatle Paul. One of the most surprising revelations in recent years is the number of people I am meeting who are too young to appreciate The Beatles nearly to the extent that we did. Recently, Mrs. Shady and I played the Beatles-themed movies Across The Universe and Yesterday for her 50-year old son. As you know, both films are loaded with Beatles songs. To our astonishment and dismay, he was underwhelmed by both movies, didn't get why people flipped for The Beatles and their music. It reminds me of mid 80s teenager Marty McFly in Back To The Future giving mid 50s teenagers their first exposure to rock & roll. It was completely foreign to their ears and their experience. I agree with you, Belle. It's safe to say that Paul's love songs will last as long as the world does, although that might not be very long, based on the way things are going.
I'm pleased that you remember Joanie Sommers. I think this is the first time I have posted one of her songs. I like this one, "Don't Pity Me," even more than her signature song "Johnny Get Angry." Yessum, that solo hit by Frankie Valli dominated the radio airwaves throughout the summer of '67.
I actually prefer The Spinners' output from their earlier years in the 60s when they were a Motown group. In the 70s, they switched labels and adopted a smoother, slicker, more sophisticated sound, as did the O'Jays and other soul groups, and achieved their greatest success with that formula.
(next)
I forgot to mention the Gibbs brothers. All my family loved them and I think Sandy had a poster of Andy Gibb on her bedroom wall.
ReplyDeleteI also forgot to tell you that I am sorry you lost your cousin, Paula. I pray God will comfort you and your family.
Thanks for remembering Andy Gibb, the first of the singing brothers to pass away. He was indeed a teen idol and a poster boy for pop love songs.
DeleteI see that you read one of the other comments and gathered that I have suffered the loss of a cherished family member, my dear cousin Paula. Thank you for mentioning her. If you have a couple of minutes to spare, I invite you to follow the link below and review the special tribute I posted three years ago to honor Paula on her 70th birthday:
https://tctgyb.blogspot.com/2019/02/hey-hey-paula.html
I will miss Paula and remember her always. Thank you again for your comments on Meg's show and for your caring words of comfort, dear friend Belle!
Though I didn't own the album, I well remember Wings at the Speed of Sound, because of how much airplay those two songs, "Silly Love Songs" and "Let 'Em In" got during the summer of 1976, which was for me personally the summer in-between 8th and 9th grade, and between middle school and high school. I also remember the older McCartney hits "My Love", "Live and Let Die" and "Band on the Run" also returning to the radio as if the deejays felt the need to throw everything they had of Paul's at you. Meanwhile, George, Ringo, and especially John, were no where to be seen or heard. At that time I really didn't know much about the dynamics of the Beatles, in terms of who wrote what, and throughout high school I just assumed McCartney WAS the Beatles, and the other three didn't really matter. Then of course, not too long after I graduated, Lennon came out with Double Fantasy, and all THOSE songs started getting airplay, and then even more airplay after John's unfortunate death, and the earlier songs like "Imagine" began getting heavy airplay again, that it kind of wiped out the memories of McCartney's mid-'70s success, and now it seemed as if Lennon WAS the Beatles. If took a few more years for me to get a proper perspective on the whole thing. I don't know to what extent Paul and John saw each other as competitors after the Beatles broke up, but for a while there, things got very Shakespearean.
ReplyDeleteHi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for popping over to experience Meg Griffin's first SPMM radio show, good buddy!
Yes, during the time period you mentioned, it seems like the prolific Paul McCartney was constantly on the radio, almost to the point of overexposure. I actually liked and paid more attention to the solo careers of John and George. The material written and recorded by John and George resonated with me to a greater extent than did Paul's love ballads. I also need to give a nod to Ringo who recorded the excellent hit singles "It Don't Come Easy" and "Photograph" following the dissolution of The Beatles.
If you ever have the time, I encourage you to watch this episode of Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Show which was taped December 9, 1980, the day after John was assassinated. It contains the full John Lennon interview recorded five years earlier on Tom's late night show, one of the most memorable events in television history:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZiIQz6SFBM
Thanks again for your visit and thought provoking observations, good buddy Kirk. Have a safe and happy week!
Hey friend, Shady! A little late to visit this time but I have to say I really like the Paul McCartney tunes. Another one he wrote for the Lovely Linda was "Maybe I'm Amazed" and I love that one too.
ReplyDeleteI always feel sorry for poor Meg. Even her family gives her a bad time.
When we saw the play, "The Jersey Boys" and they did this song it was such an emotional moment. I got chills. Still do.
I have been pretty quiet over in my corner but I'm hoping to get a post out in the next day or two with some catching up. Have a great Sunday!
Hi, Janet!
DeleteThanks for tuning in Meg's show #1 dear friend! I'm delighted to see you!
Yessum, you are another friend who appreciates the style of music Beatle Paul created for the world to enjoy. Thanks for contributing his "Maybe I'm Amazed" love song for Linda. I remember it well.
Yessum, Meg does indeed get kicked around on Family Guy, especially by her dad Peter. Is it any wonder she sought comfort in the arms of Rondo? :)
I'll bet The Jersey Boys did this Frankie Valli solo hit justice. Thanks for letting me know you saw the play and that the song is part of their repertoire.
Thanks again for dropping in for Meg's show, dear friend Janet. I'll be on the lookout for new activity at Janet's Smiles. Please give my good buddy Benny some lovins and have a wonderful week ahead!
Hello, my friend!
ReplyDeletePaul McCartney's hit songs remind me of a once broken hearted teenager. I cried a lot listening to these songs in the mid-70s when the one I thought was the one was no longer in the picture. Thankfully that relationship ended when it did so my one true love could sweep my heart away when DH entered my world! All these years later, I just enjoy hearing these old McCartney tunes as beautiful melodies from the past.
Andy Gibb's released the year DH graduated high school. We started dating the fall he entered his senior year. Andy and his brothers were a big part of our late teen and early adult years.
The singer, Joanie Sommers' and song "Don't Pity Me" both are new to me. I do remember Franki Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You". For our 40th anniversary, DH got me an Italian made music box that plays this song. Although, I had forgotten it, I do remember your last song feature, "Love Of a Kind (Love Affair)".
What a great set of songs from the unlucky in love teenager! :) Have a fantastic week, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteI'm very happy that you could stop by, dear friend! I'm getting a late start on the day because I had a morning doctor visit on the far side of town.
Seems like you are anchored to Paul McCartney's 70s hits. Yessum, while you might have suffered a broken heart when it didn't work out with that first guy, you can now be thankful it turned out that way, because the love of your life, DH, was waiting in the wings. Fate intervened and brought the two of you together, resulting in a very happy and long lasting union.
Thanks for letting me know that all of the Gibb brothers made significant contributions to the soundtrack of your youth and twenty-something years. How romantic and what a coincidence that DH gifted you a mewsic box that plays "Can't Take My Eyes Off You."
You might be the only friend who remembers Meg's showender song, "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)" by the reinvented Spinners group of the 70s. It was a biggie in my neck of the woods.
Thanks again for tuning in Meg's first SPMM radio show, dear friend Cathy. Tomorrow morning, in my next post, I will offer a radical change of pace, and hope you can swing by at some point and check it out. Have a wonderful week!
