"Yesterday Once More" - The Carpenters
"Yesterday Once More" - The Carpenters
(July/Aug. 1973, highest chart position
#1 Cash Box & Easy Listening/#2 Hot 100)
Kicking off the show, musical siblings Karen & Richard, The Carpenters,
and "Yesterday Once More," a chart-topping hit from the summer
of 1973 that reminisces about songs of a generation gone by.
an 80 year old granny (above)...
who's been mysteriously transformed...
into a bloomin' 20-something hottie! (below)
on the Australian science fiction mystery TV series Bloom.
I'm not my daughter's age. I'm my granddaughter's age!
I guess you could call me a late bloomer Boomer.
Here's how it happened.
A year after a devastating flood killed five people in my
idyllic country town in Victoria, a mysterious new plant
began to appear. Soon it was discovered that the plant,
unlike the "Audrey Junior" in Little Shop of Horrors,
does not sing... and does not eat people.
When consumed, the plant's berry
has the power to restore youth!
For aging locals like me, it was a gift of
power beyond our wildest imagining.
This Fountain of Youth in edible form is a miracle that some townsfolk
will kill to keep secret. (No hearing it through the grapevine.)
Maybe we should call those berries the grapes of wrath.
My friend Gwen, who was in my 1961 high school graduating class,
has been gobbling up those tutti frutties like there's no tomorrow.
(Hint: there might not be a tomorrow.)
Clearly, this is not your granddaddy's Please Don't Eat the Daisies. When Gwen
and I and other grannies and granddads turn young again, all we want to do is
raise hell, shag and keep eating those bewitched berries. Simply put, in our
little town, the boomers muncha buncha bloomers and act like they're
reborn to be wild! To complicate matters, there aren't enough
plants and berries to go around, and if you stop taking
those purple pep pills, the effect quickly wears off
and ZAP! - You're Morganized old again!
Now that you know our story, I welcome you to a sneak peek at my radio show
Loris in Bloom
exclusively here on S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio. The oldies I play will
make Boomers like us feel young again, get us singing and dancing...
maybe even doing some romancing. So get set to relive the
glory days of your bloomin' Boomer youth as my
7-song-in-a-row block party continues!
A few days ago,
when I was 80...
I was meek, mild-
mannered... and
aging gracefully.
BOOM!
Now, after taking Love Potion No. 9 in the form of those purple pellets
and turning 60 years younger, I wanna rock & roll all night and party
every day. Thanks to that perplexing plant... all I wanna do is root.
This metamorphosis, this extreme makeover, has me baffled and bewildered.
Somehow I have gone back to the future... been given the present of the past...
and as far as my body and libido are concerned, it's "Yesterday Once More."
overnight, it was a fresh start.
It felt like a warm breeze
was blowing into my life.

To help explain the feeling, I'm going
to play a German song re-written in
English by composer Johnny Mercer
and recorded by Frank Sinatra, a

the clock to 1966 and makes
you young again singing--

Christmas in 1965, Nino and
April appeared on Dick Clark's

"Begin The Beguine," the Cole
Porter song introduced in the
1935 Broadway musical Jubilee.

and its bewitched beans into a younger
me - and I don't mean a little younger -
I mean a lot younger. I'm the budding,
blossoming beauty I was in my early 20s.
Let's put it this way. That perplexing plant
(I've named him Robert) has been berry
berry good to me! (BA-DUM-BUMP)
And I assure you that I'm no shy violet.
Now, let's get back to the music from
my (and your) Boomer youth. 'Twas
the spring of 1960 and I was close
to the age I am now thanks to
Halle Berry (yep, I named her)

seven weeks at #1 in the UK and topped the U.S. R&B chart for one week.

makes you feel young again and berry berry happy. This is my new show
Loris in Bloom
inspired by the Australian fantasy mystery TV series Bloom. The songs I'm
playing help tell the amazing true story of how I shed six decades overnight.
Now that I've gone from 80 to 20, I've hit a speed bump. My daughter
has now assumed the role of my nagging mother. She even tried to
ground me for acting like such a tart. The good news is that I've
become besties with my granddaughter. It's ladies night down
at the corner pub and she and I plan to close the joint.
This next fellow is no stranger
to the top of the chart. In 1960,
Chubby Checker's cover of the
Hank Ballard song "The Twist"
reached #1 and ignited a world-
wide dance craze. (I remember
doing "The Twist" here in the
Outback.) In 1961, Chubby
scored one of the biggest
records of the year with
another "Twist" song.

Good morning dear friend,
ReplyDeleteI may have to check out this series! It sounds interesting and anything that sort of has a Little Shop of Horrors vibe is a plus in my book. I'll check it out.
I'm familiar with all of these songs today and most of these songs are part of my summer, especially summer beach, playlists. It's going to a busy day with cooking, and I plan to play this. This is the ultimate Summer Sunday playlist.
Have a great Sunday, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteHeavens to Murgatroyd, dear friend - you take home the Early Bird trophy this week and I thank you for coming right over!
Yessum, Bloom only lasted two seasons, but it was interesting to watch how ordinary people react under extraordinary circumstances - in this case elderly folks having their youth restored simply by eating the berries of a mysterious vine.
Wow! You didn't even need to check with your dad to learn about these songs. You already knew them! That's a pleasant surprise. Yessum, add this Loris playlist to your daily activities. I'm sure the songs will brighten your Sunday.
Thanks again for being the first to arrive and have a wonderful week ahead, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteSorry for the absence, new crush and we've been busy talking and getting to know one another. I've also been scrapbooking and reading and keeping busy.
Happy Thankful Thursday, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteA new crush? I think I know who that is, but I will need to read all about it on your site. Seems like you've had a great week so far and I'm glad to hear it.
Happy TT to you as well, dear friend JM!
I've said it many times before and I'll say it again... Karen Carpenter had perhaps the best female voice on the planet. Her death was such a tragedy!
ReplyDeleteSome nice selections today, Shady. ~Kelly & Pat (woof)
Hi, Kelly & Pat!
DeleteWOOF! WOOF! WOOF!, dear friend! Thanks for racing over at the break of dawn (local time) to experience the wonder and mystery of Loris in Bloom.
Yessum, knowing when and how Karen's story ended, it is sad to listen to her pure, clear, lovely voice and view pictures of her in that special enhanced video.
I'm happy that you enjoyed this sneak preview, but I can't take credit. It was Loris who picked all of the songs (plus a bushel and a peck of those magic berries).
Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Kelly. Please tickle Pat's belly for me and have a wonderful week!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteHow are you doing? I hope you and Mrs. Shady are enjoying the weekend. I found Bloom on Hulu. It shows two seasons available. IMdB indicates that it's not an active series. Is this correct? The trailer looks quite interesting. I think this is a show I'd like to watch. I enjoyed the old tunes in today's post and worked well. I, especially loved "Yesterday Once More" by The Carpenters. I think we've all daydreamed about traveling back in time to revisit our young selves again while maintaining the secrets that our present mind holds. Have a good week, dear friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteWelcome back to Shady's Place, dear friend. You've been missed!
Yessum, unfortunately the Australian science fiction mystery TV series Bloom lasted only two seasons, but it was fun and interesting to watch. Aussie model and actress Bella Heathcote plays "Young Loris," and another actress I like a lot, Jacqueline McKenzie, is also in the cast. Jacqueline starred in one of my favorite Australian movies, Under the Lighthouse Dancing, and another great sci-fi TV series, The 4400, which I highly recommend.
I'm glad you liked the show opener, "Yesterday Once More" by The Carpenters, which is, for all intents and purposes the theme song of this series.
Thanks again for making time for a visit this week, dear friend Cathy!
I haven't seen Bloom but it sounds like a good show.
ReplyDeleteI remember listening to the Carpenters when I was a kid. The same goes for most of the other songs here today.
The only song from this post that I didn't recognize is "Begin The Beguine" - Nino Tempo And April Stevens.
Hi, Mary!
DeleteHooray, dear friend - your comment was published automatically! Thanks a lot for dropping in to take a sneak peek at the new Shady's Place series Loris in Bloom.
Yessum, if you like Australian TV, Bloom is a fascinating, thought provoking series. How would you, how would any of us act, if we awoke one morning to find that we are in our 20s again? As you will see, some of the characters handle it more responsibly than others.
I'm pleased that you are the third friend to specifically single out Karen & Richard Carpenter in the lead-off position. I'm glad you also remember a few of the other ditties. The oft recorded tune/song "Begin The Beguine" is an old-old-oldie from the mid 1930s Broadway musical Jubilee. The talented yet underrated brother-sister duo Nino & April are frequent flyers here at Shady's Place.
Thanks again for swinging over, dear friend Mary. I'm glad your comment didn't get snagged by the spam gremlins this time. Have a super week!
This sounds like an interesting series thT I can't get...bummer. it reminds me of that Twilight Zone episode starring Ann Blyth as a film star that never ages a needs men to keep her young. I like all this music and the Begin the Beguine song is a unique take on this famous song. I enjoyed it and the clowns song which I haven't heard in a while. Have a fab week ahead. And enjoy the flowers and the trees and the birds and the bees...just don't swallow one the way our fat premier did...Doug Ford...it went viral I guess. Harley says woof.
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteThanks so much for being a second day Sally, dear friend! I'm happy you stopped by to check out this sneak preview of the new SPMM radio show Loris in Bloom, starring Loris Webb, a character on the Australian sci-fi series Bloom. There aren't that many episodes in its brief two-season run, but Shady sez the series is worth watching. The Fountain of Youth theme will remind you of Cocoon. To put it another way, thanks to those magic gumdrops, every Granny Clampett in the village turns into an Elly May overnight, and every Jed into a Jethro.
I knew you'd have something to say about those Niagara sibs, Nino and April, doing a version of "Begin The Beguine," a song introduced in the 1935 B-way musical Jubilee. I'm delighted that you also gave a nod to Phil & Don, The Everlys, performing the biggest hit of their duo career -- "Cathy's Clown."
Whenever I see a vintage clip of Jewel Akens, the singer who ended the show with his signature song "Birds And The Bees," I feel sad, because he is no longer with us, having died in 2013 at age 79 from complications of back surgery. I met Jewel Akens in 1984 when he took part in an oldies show I helped produce. Jewel and I sat side by side in the auditorium of the concert venue a few hours before showtime and chatted and reminisced. He was a heck of a nice guy.
WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! to my good buddy Harley, and thank you again for coming over early in the week. Take care and I'll see you soon, dear friend BB!
Hi Shady! This post had me running out to the Creepy Woods hoping to find a strange vine growing with berries! Nope, just poison ivy as usual. That show sounds like one I would love so I'm going to check it out. Wouldn't we all like to take a quick trip back in time? I'd meet you at the Dell for a spin around the floor! I loved the Carpenters and that song made me smile and remember days gone by. I can't hear the Twist and Chubby Checker without seeing my brother Phil on the dance floor killing those moves! He was the King of the twist back in the day. Next time I see him I might have to ask him to bust a move! Ha! Thanks for my song...:"Cathy's Clown"...or should I say "Kathy's Clown"? Have a good week Shady and I hope all is well with you and Mrs. Shady. The summer is flying by and soon the leaves up here will be a "Shady" shade of yellow, red and orange!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteWelcome in, dear friend. I'm delighted to see you!
Ha! Yessum, as the Beach Boys sang, "wouldn't it be nice" to find a mystery plant growing on your property, bite into one of its berries and - PRESTO - you're 21 again! Honestly, I don't think I'd want to be young in this day and age. You and I had our fun and were extremely lucky to have grown up in the 50s and 60s. If the berry actually transported you back in time to that period, then I might consider it, but it doesn't. So to clarify, the characters in Bloom do not go back in time. They simply turn into 20-somethings living in present day. Understand? Yessum, it would be a mind blowing experience for teenage YaYa and Shady to meet at the Dell in the late 60s. I doubt that you'd like me very much, because I was often drunk and acted like a jerk and a punk most of the time.
How about that nicely enhanced video with images of Richard & Karen during their career? I was thrilled to find it. Thanks for sharing that your brother Phil was your family's Twist King. I believe Chubby's "Let's Twist Again" is actually heard on radio these days more often than "The Twist." I'm also pleased that you enjoyed that remastered sync edit video of The Everly's doing their monster hit "Kathleen's Clown." :)
Yessum, I told you so. Summer's on the run up there in Ohio, and soon the leaves will be changing. Please promise that you'll take lotsa pictures for your blog. Get ready to huddle around that campfire on the chilly evenings to come, roasting marshmallows and telling spooky stories. The Yeti might join in!
Thanks again for dropping by and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend YaYa!
That would be amazing if there really was a plant that could turn back the hands of time and make us look young again! LOL!
ReplyDeleteHi, Sherry!
DeleteIt's great to see you back in Shady's clubhouse, dear friend. Thanks for coming!
Yessum, the mysterious "Robert Plant" has been berry berry good to Loris Webb and the other villagers. The gist of the TV series Bloom is that the oldsters turn young again, but remain in the present. The berries do not turn back time. I think it makes the story more interesting, because the old people need to cope with their restored youth and raging hormones along with the reaction of people their age who have not yet consumed the magic fruit and are still old.
Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Sherry!
Looks like an interesting show. I might seek it out assuming it doesn't cost me anything (sorry, but the ghost of Jack Benny occasionally takes control of my body--maybe that could be a series.) You featured Paul McCartney a week or so ago. Maybe you should have included him here. After all, he turned 80 this year.
ReplyDeleteLove Karen, love Sinatra, love the Everlys, like Chubby. I'm also fond of Cole Porter, and it was nice, if a bit odd, to hear one of his songs on American Bandstand. Which reminds me. I couldn't help but notice the bags under April Stevens eyes. Assuming she was in her 20s when that was filmed, I thought to myself, "That girl must be partying a lot!" Then I looked up her age. She would have been in her mid-30s at the time. At 98, she's still alive. None of which excuses the Bandstand makeup artists for doing a sloppy job.
In one of the comment responses, you say you wouldn't want to return to your 20s in the present age. Speaking for myself, I'm ALREADY living in the present age, so why not be in my 20s? Yes, there's a pandemic now, but it's not any worse than the pandemic that was reared its immune-deficient head not too long after I graduated from high school.
That's all I got.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for coming over mid week, good buddy! It's nice to know that you would be interested in watching the short-lived Bloom series. I'm not a tremendous fan of Paul McCartney, but I wish him a happy 80th birthday. My source says he reached that milestone two months ago. I wish my favorite Beatle, John, were still around today.
I'm glad you liked or loved most artists in the Loris lineup and that you were pleasantly surprised to hear "B the B" performed on Bandstand. Yes, I was going to say that April Stevens was no spring chicken when she appeared on Clark's show in an episode that aired a week before Christmas in 1965. She reminds me of Petula Clark, three years younger, who didn't become a pop singing star making records for teenage consumption until she was entering her mid 30s. April Stevens' first hit also came when she was in her mid 30s, the 1963 chart topper "Deep Purple" performed as a duo with younger brother Nino Tempo. Pet Clark started singing on radio as a girl in 1942 and released her first record in 1949 at age 17. April Stevens released her first single in 1951 at age 22. My source says April is 93 this year. Regarding the bags under her eyes, I think we need to remember that network TV production, especially on "disposable" music shows for teens, wasn't very advanced in the mid 60s. If you watch enough episodes of Bandstand, you will notice many instances of poor camera placement and inferior lighting. The ABC show probably didn't have a big budget for a makeup artist either.
Your point is well taken about the global HIV/AIDS pandemic that began in 1981, but I stand by my statement that I don't think I would want to be starting over in these post-apocalyptic 2020s. America has lost its soul.
Thanks again for staying up late on a school night to visit and comment, good buddy Kirk. Enjoy the rest of your week, and stay tuned Friday for the next edition of Strange Magic Being Erica starring Erica Strange, the gal who actually does travel back in time and becomes a younger and wiser version of herself on the Canadian series Being Erica. Take care!
Here I am as promised my friend. Benny had a short walk today. Sometimes he likes walking a lot and sometimes it's just a block or two. I usually let him decide. This TV series looks very interesting and it is on Hulu so I may check it out for sure. Right now my daughter and I are watching Only Murders in the Building.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am saddened every time I hear Karen Carpenter's voice. Sometimes I rewatch the made for TV movie about her life. Such a beautiful voice. I didn't know that Cathy's Clown was the Everly Brother's best hit. My favorite of theirs is "All I have to do is Dream." I usually think of "Begin the Beguine" as an instrumental. It was funny to see those two sing it. I particularly got a kick out of their eye movements, which seemed to move more than the rest of their bodies - LOL.
I notice you have Kevin and Winnie on your side bar. Fred Savage has been in a bit of trouble lately, hasn't he? Thanks for the heads up to visit. I'm glad I made it just in time and I will come back to see what new excitement you have for us! Have a great rest of your week my friend.
Hi, Janet!
DeleteThanks for being here for this week's post, a sneak peek at Loris in Bloom, a new Shady's Place series and SPMM radio show based on an Australian sci-fi TV series that I recently watched and liked.
Yessum, it won't take you long to plow through Bloom because the series was canceled after only two seasons. Bella Heathcote appears in season 2 in the role of "Young Loris," a woman who eats the peculiar plant pellets and transforms from Granny into Elly May overnight.
I tried watching Only Murders but bailed out after the pilot episode. Maybe I should give it more of a chance. Yessum, I saw that TV movie about the troubled life and disturbing early death of Karen Carpenter, and her voice haunts me whenever I listen to her recordings.
Based on the stats, "Cathy's Clown" was The Everly Brothers' greatest hit, but many would argue, including you and Shady, that it was not necessarily their greatest recording. To me, their coolest record is the 1960 cover of Little Richard's "Lucille."
Yessum, "B The B" is a well known swing band instrumental. Nino and April sang so many romantic songs that some people thought they were husband and wife (like Sonny & Cher or Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gormé), but they are, or were, a brother - sister act from Niagara Falls.
Yessum, good eye in spotting Fred Savage to the right there. I have been reading those articles, and reserve judgement. Plenty of people have come to his defense, including former castmates, and public statements he recently released seem sincere. He seems genuinely apologetic and eager to make things right with the people involved.
Thanks again for coming by, dear friend Janet. You are so sweet, and I appreciate your loyal friendship. I'm glad you had a nice walk with my buddy Benny. Please smooch him on the lips for me and have a super Friday and a great weekend!
