"My Boy Lollipop" - Aoife Leonard
(Feb. 2020)

Kicking off my first show, that was 17 year old Irish singer Aoife Leonard
with her cover of "My Boy Lollipop," a song written by Robert Spencer of
the doo-wop group The Cadillacs and originally titled "My Girl Lollypop."
In 2020, Shady introduced Barbie Gaye, the girl who first waxed the
song with the gender switched to "My Boy Lollypop." In late 1956,
Barbie's single was a hit in New York and a few other cities in the
Northeast. In that same post, you met Millie Small, the young
ska singer who gained an international hit with the song in
1964. Aoife Leonard, the Irish teen you just saw and
heard, is an avid fan of American country music.
Her influences include country legends Tammy
Wynette, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton.

Hi, everyone! I'm your
hostess with the mostest,
Meg Griffin...
the lonely, unlucky in
love teenage girl on the
TV show Family Guy.
Some people say my
voice reminds them
of Jackie Burkhart
on That '70s Show.

Ever since my boyfriend Rondo (above) broke up with me
(he told me I wasn't pretty enough to suit him) I've been
getting desperate. I guess you could call me frantic romantic.

Well guess what? Frantic Romantic is the name of my brand new show
here on S-P-M-M. The songs on my play list are all about L-U-V love.
My 7-in-a-row commercial free block parties bring you the best songs
about romantic love lost & found.  Here's one now by Paul McCartney
And Wings... their number one hit from the spring of '76, a song
written by Paul and wife Linda-- "Silly Love Songs!"

That's right - Paul's my all -
and I've got another of his
classic love songs for you.
Here again is Paul and his
band Wings with their first
#1 charting U.S. hit--
"My Love!"

"My Love" - Paul McCartney And Wings
(May/June 1973, highest chart pos.
#1 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

You just enjoyed a double dose of McCartney, two hit love songs
back-to-back, both recorded with his band Wings. "My Love,"
which topped the U.S. chart in the spring of '73, was penned
by Paul as a love song for wife Linda. Before that you heard
"Silly Love Songs," a #1 charting answer to critics, including
former writing partner and Beatles band mate John Lennon,
who said Paul wrote and sang too many sentimental songs.

If you're just tuning in, I'm Meg Griffin,
Chris and Brian's sister, unlucky in love,
but lucky that I found my calling as a DJ.
This is my first show as a member of
The Shady Bunch on S-P-M-M, the #1
station for love songs and information.
I hope by now you're starting to feel
Frantic RomanticTo give you a
nudge in that direction, I've got
another great snuggle song.

This one's by pop/disco artist Andy Gibb,
youngest of the famous Brothers Gibb.
In the summer of '77, Andy's single
reached #1 in the U.S., Canada and
 Australia. Here's Andy Gibb and--
"I Just Want To Be Your Everything!"

"I Just Want To Be Your Everything" - Andy Gibb
(July/Aug. 1977, highest chart position
#1 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

Flashing us back to the summer of 1977, that was The Bee Gees'
younger brother Andy Gibb doing the biggest hit of his brief career,
the chart-topping smash "I Just Want To Be Your Everything."

I'm Meg Griffin and I just wanna be your DJ,
playing love songs all day and night here on
S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radiothe station that's
#1 for music and fun. My Frantic Romantic
love songs cover the entire spectrum of
relationships from break-ups to make-ups,
you're my everything songs to hey, won't
you play, another somebody done some-
body wrong songs. In fact, on my turn-
table right now is one of those sad songs
about losing at the game of love.  It's
Buffalo gal Joanie Sommers licking her
wounds in the wake of a busted fling.

Here's Joanie asking her old flame to
take her back and-- "Don't Pity Me."

"Don't Pity Me" - Joanie Sommers
(May 1965, uncharted)

That was Joanie Sommers begging her ex to give their love another whirl singing
"Dont Pity Me." Once dubbed The Voice of the Sixties, Joanie mainly recorded
jazz and pop standards, but she's best known for her surprise 1962 top 10
pop hit "Johnny Get Angry." Released in May, 1965, "Don't Pity Me,"
another pop ditty in the same vein, failed to chart, didn't even
Bubble Under... but the original label single is coveted by
collectors and can fetch up to $1,000 at record auctions!

Love is in the air here on S-P-M-M...
and you've got me, Meg Griffin, in your
ear and working my way into your heart.
I'm feelin' Frantic Romantic, and I've
got another huggin' and smoochin'

I'm gonna introduce him anyhow.
Sounding better than ever before
in Futuresonic Stereo Surround, it's
Four Seasons frontman Frankie Valli
doing one of his biggest solo hits.
From the summer of '67, Frankie
sings- "Can't Take My Eyes Off You!"

"Can't Take My Eyes Off You" - Frankie Valli
(June/July 1967, highest chart position
#1 Cash Box/#2 Hot 100)

You just listened to a classic love song of the 60s, Frankie Valli's solo single
"Can't Take My Eyes off You," enhanced and remixed in full spectrum
stereo for your listening pleasure on S-P-M-M. In the summer of '67,
Frankie's record made it all the way to #1 on the Cash Box chart
but, on the Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at #2, blocked from
the top spot by The Association and their hit "Windy."

Oh darn! My first show's at an end!

To play us off, here are The Spinners, the mighty Motown men of the 60s who
found their greatest success when they switched to the Atlantic label in the early
70s. From the spring of '73, this is their third chart-topping single on the R&B
chart - "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)." Now this is Meg Griffin giving a shout-
out to my lost love Rondo wherever he may be, and saying goodbye and thanks
to you, my wonderful listeners. Please remember...all you need is love. So long!

many great hits, a single that made a run at the top 10 in the
celebrated Summer of '69--  "I'd Wait A Million Years."

S-P-M-M, home of The Shady Bunch, and our seven-in-a-row block party
continues now with Wings, the band built around former Beatle Paul McCartney
and his keyboardist wife Linda. In early 1973 Wings were soaring with a single
that reached the top 5 in the UK and top 10 stateside-- "Hi, Hi, Hi!"

"Hi, Hi, Hi" - Wings
(Jan. 1973, highest chart pos. #6 Cash Box/ #10 Hot 100)

Brushing the top 5 on Cash Box, that was
Paul and Linda McCartney and their band
Wings with their hit single "Hi, Hi, Hi,"
a record that was banned by the BBC
on grounds that it contained sexually
suggestive lyrics and a drug reference.

"25 Or 6 To 4" - Chicago
(Aug./Sept. 1970, highest chart pos. #4 Hot 100/#6 Cash Box,

Chicago, another great horn driven rock band of the late 60s and early 70s,
with the brassy sound of "25 Or 6 To 4," a song, not about drugs as some
people thought, but instead about trying to write a song in the middle
of the night, 3:34 or 3:35 AM, to be more exact.

How long will it take you to name this tune?
I'm betting you'll know it in two seconds flat.

The song was first recorded by the Dutch
psychedelic rock band The Shocking Blue
(no relation to Shady Blue). Here they are

U.S. Featuring lead vocals by Mariska
Veres, a raven-haired beauty who was
Holland's answer to Cher... here are
The Shocking Blue with-- "Venus!"

"Venus" - The Shocking Blue
(Jan./Feb. 1970, highest chart pos. #1)

That was the Dutch rock band The Shocking Blue with their 1970
chart-topping original version of "Venus." You can't keep a good
song down. "Venus" returned to the top of the chart two more
times, first in 1981 when sampled on the famous "Medley"
by another Dutch act, Stars On 45, and again in 1986
when covered by the UK girl trio Bananarama.

Best of Bandstands in Foreign Lands - Vol. 10:
Born To Be Alive... Out on Thunder Island!

Welcome to vol. 10 of
my globetrotting series

BANDSTANDS IN
FOREIGN LANDS!

I'm Shady Seaweed, here to bring you more great
music performances that originated from TV studios,
big halls and nightclubs in Europe and other parts
of the world from the 1960s through early 2000s.

Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of music,
the thrill of Vic Tory (the little known "Fifth Beatle")... and
the agony of the feet (from so much dancing)... this is:

Bandstands in
Foreign Lands!

 FOREIGNER

DISCO - ZDF
MAINZ, GERMANY

Our globetrotting tour begins in Germany and the bandstand of the music TV show
DISCO carried on the German public-service television broadcaster ZDF based
in Mainz. That's where we find Foreigner, a rock band containing British and
American members. In this appearance on DISCO, the band performed
one of their hits, the lead single from their chart topping 1981 album
Foreigner 4. Here's Foreigner making it sound-- "Urgent!"

"Urgent" - Foreigner
(Aug/Sept. 1981, highest chart pos. #4 Hot 100,
#1 U.S. Mainstream Rock, perf. on DISCO)

 WINGS

 (RUBY FLIPPER)

TOP OF THE POPS
LONDON, ENGLAND

Many times over the years I have used the words "Silly Love Songs" in conversations
about the 60s music revolution from sweet and tender to brash and sassy.  I borrowed
the expression from Paul & Linda McCartney. "Silly Love Songs," a chart-topper in
America, was released from the fifth studio album recorded by McCartney's
post-Beatles band Wings. Our next stop is a bandstand in a foreign land
called England where one of the talented dance companies on the
London based music series Top Of The Pops is set to perform
to the song. Try 'em on for size-- Ruby Flipper!

"Silly Love Songs" - Wings
(May/June 1976, highest chart pos. #1 Hot 100/#2 UK,
dance perf. by Ruby Flipper on Top of the Pops)

 KOOL AND THE GANG

P.I.T. - ZDF
MAINZ, GERMANY

Our next Biffle stop takes us back to Germany where a wildly popular New Jersey
funk band is set to perform on P.I.T. (Peter-Illmann-Treff), a German music
TV series on ZDF moderated by television and radio actor and pop music
expert Peter Illmann. ("Treff," FYI, translates to "haunt, rendezvous
or meeting place"). Here they are, Kool And The Gang,
with one of their top 10 hits of the 80s-- "Fresh!"

"Fresh" - Kool and the Gang
(May/June 1985, highest chart pos. #9 Hot 100/#1 R&B,
perf. on German TV series P.I.T.)

 PATRICK HERNANDEZ

ZDF-KULTNACHT
MAINZ, GERMANY

Penned and recorded by French singer Patrick Hernandez, our next featured
recording is one of the greatest hits of the Disco 70s, a single that reached
#1 in France and a dozen other countries including Germany. We now
switch to a club somewhere in Europe - might be France, might be
Italy, might be Belgium - I don't know. What I do know is that
this is a great song and an exciting performance. It aired on
Kultnacht - "cult night," - a music program carried by the
German PBS broadcaster ZDF. Here now is Patrick
Hernandez doing his worldwide hit and signature
song-- "Born To Be Alive!"

"Born To Be Alive" - Patrick Hernandez
 (Aug. 1979, highest chart pos. #16 Hot 100, #1 U.S. Disco,
#1 in 13 other countries, perf. on German TV show ZDF-Kultnacht)

 JAY FERGUSON

TOPPOP
THE NETHERLANDS

Now let's hear from soft rock maestro Jay Ferguson. Jay was an original member
of the late 60s jazz and Beatles-influenced psych band Spirit known for their hit
single "I Got A Line On You." In the early 70s Jay formed Jo Jo Gunne, an
LA rock band that took their name from a Chuck Berry hit. In the mid 70s
Jay began a solo career, and in early '78 scored a top ten hit with this
one, "Thunder Island," the title song from his second studio album.
"Thunder Island" is a soft rock record that has more meat than
Manilow, a slightly harder rock edge, thanks to the featured
guitar playing of James Gang and Eagles vet Joe Walsh.
Our Biffle tour now takes us to The Netherlands where
Jay performed on the Dutch music show TopPop.

"Thunder Island" - Jay Ferguson
(Feb./Mar. 1978, highest chart pos.
#6 Cash Box,/#9 Hot 100, perf. on TopPop)

 BARBARELLA

RTL 4 TV CHANNEL
LUXEMBOURG, HOLLAND, THE NETHERLANDS

For the grand finale of our show, I'd like to stay right here in Holland... wooden shoe?
Gotta love 'em (or not)... they're Barbarella, a female Dutch trio that released two
synth-pop, dance-pop, Euro disco style albums in 1990, Sucker For Your Love
and Don't Stop The Dance. I'm a sucker for girl groups and cool covers and
here's one now. From Don't Stop The Dance here's Barbarella on the
Dutch TV channel RTL 4, headquartered in Luxembourg, doing
their version of the Beatles biggie-- "Please, Please Me!"

"Please, Please Me" - Barbarella
(1991 single from 1990 album Don't Stop The Dance,
perf. on Dutch TV channel RTL 4, Luxembourg, Holland)

I hope you enjoyed volume 10 of

BANDSTANDS IN
FOREIGN LANDS!

Stay tuned for the next edition coming soon.

Have a Shady day!
