"My Boy Lollipop" - Aoife Leonard
(Feb. 2020)
Kicking off my first show, that was 17 year old Irish singer Aoife Leonard
with her cover of "My Boy Lollipop," a song written by Robert Spencer of
the doo-wop group The Cadillacs and originally titled "My Girl Lollypop."
In 2020, Shady introduced Barbie Gaye, the girl who first waxed the
song with the gender switched to "My Boy Lollypop." In late 1956,
Barbie's single was a hit in New York and a few other cities in the
Northeast. In that same post, you met Millie Small, the young
ska singer who gained an international hit with the song in
1964. Aoife Leonard, the Irish teen you just saw and
heard, is an avid fan of American country music.
Her influences include country legends Tammy
Wynette, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton.

You just enjoyed a double dose of McCartney, two hit love songs
back-to-back, both recorded with his band Wings. "My Love,"
which topped the U.S. chart in the spring of '73, was penned
by Paul as a love song for wife Linda. Before that you heard
"Silly Love Songs," a #1 charting answer to critics, including
former writing partner and Beatles band mate John Lennon,
who said Paul wrote and sang too many sentimental songs.
If you're just tuning in, I'm Meg Griffin,
Chris and Brian's sister, unlucky in love,
but lucky that I found my calling as a DJ.

To play us off, here are The Spinners, the mighty Motown men of the 60s who
found their greatest success when they switched to the Atlantic label in the early
70s. From the spring of '73, this is their third chart-topping single on the R&B
chart - "One Of A Kind (Love Affair)." Now this is Meg Griffin giving a shout-
out to my lost love Rondo wherever he may be, and saying goodbye and thanks
to you, my wonderful listeners. Please remember...all you need is love. So long!
