Hi, friend Shady … good to see that you and your precious record collection wasn't blown away/ flooded out by hurricane Dorian! All the more reason to dance for joy. I was not familiar with any of the songs, but enjoyed seeing a very young Diana Ross perform :) Other than that I am busy treasuring every one of our last Alberta Summer days :) Love, cat.
ReplyDeleteHi, cat!
DeleteThanks for hurrying down to qualify as the early bird, dear friend! I'm happy to have you here for the 13th hip trip of the Shady Train.
I am thankful that the hurricane stayed away from our part of Florida, cat, but sad for those who were and still are affected by the wicked system. The hurricane season lasts until the end of November, and so we still have a long way to go before we can relax again.
That music video for "Chain Reaction" was shot in 1985, and therefore Diana Ross was not as young as she was made to appear in the black & white portions. I agree that she looked just like she did in the mid 60s. "Chain Reaction" topped the charts in the UK, Australia and Ireland but was a big disappointment for Diana here in the states.
I hope you enjoy a prolonged autumn before the snow flies across Alberta. Thanks again for coming, dear friend cat, and have a wonderful weekend!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteSo, y'all are dealing with a heat advisory today. That's a bummer. Do y'all typically get the thunderstorms associated with the heat? Well...despite what the weather is doing outside, we can always enjoy the mewsic and oh, my friend did you introduced me to whole lot of new sounds. Seriously, I didn't know a single song featured and I was certain I would know some of them since I knew the names - Diana Ross, The Commordes, and Whitney Houston, but nope their songs didn't register. So kudos on a job well done. I loved boogieing with the Soul Train dancers. You just gotta love their spunk & funk from those earlier days. Thanks for getting me going this morning. Have a boogietastic weekend, dear friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteThanks for dropping in to ride the big train, dear friend! I'm surprised and delighted that all seven songs were new to your ears, even the ones by big name artists. In all fairness, it doesn't shock me that you don't remember that Diana Ross single. It was a hit on the U.S. Dance chart, but failed miserably on the mainstream pop chart. When first released it only reached #95 on Billboard - almost unimaginable for a star of Diana's stature. The single was remixed and released a second time, but still only reached #66 on the Hot 100 and #77 on Cash Box. The Commodores single topped the R&B chart but only made the top 30 pop. Whitney's "So Emotional," however, was a huge crossover hit, and reached #1 on the pop chart.
I'm glad you enjoyed getting down with the Shady Train gang. The heat we are experiencing is the worst kind, because we aren't getting much rain to cool us off. We could use a good gully-washer, but the local forecast doesn't allow much of a chance for rain until next week.
Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Cathy. Have a safe and happy weekend!
Tom,
DeleteYeah, I was surprised that the songs that should been ringing a bell weren't. It could be I heard them but didn't make an impression with me at the time or who knows. Whatever the reason, I'm happy you shared them with me. That's too bad y'all aren't in for any rain any time soon. We're getting som hot, hot weather too. And, it looks like we'll be in the 90s until at least early next week. I could've sworn we were passed this heat but looks like I was wrong. I'm even more eager for fall to arrive. Have a good day and I hope the family crisis you're dealing with is resolved soon. Please, don't worry about things in Blogosphere. All of your friends understand, especially me. Thanks for giving me the heads up ,though. Be well!
Thank you, Cathy! I arise at 5 am nearly every day. That gives me a chance to do some blogging before others get up and the business of the day begins. I was thinking about putting a sign in my blog window this week temporarily suspending operations while we work with our loved ones here across the state, but I have been able to keep up by making the rounds whenever I get a brief window.
DeleteWhen the heat lingers late in the season as it is doing now in my region and in yours, it makes everyone antsy for fall. When the cold and snow stick around late into the winter season and early spring, everyone yearns for springlike weather. Most people I've talked to prefer spring and fall. If you live in Florida, you prefer one season - winter. :)
Thanks for understanding what I'm doing this week. You and DH are no strangers to being pulled away from your routines to deal with family matters. I will hang in and visit you whenever I can. Please take good care of yourself, dear friend Cathy!
Tom,
DeleteThis week has been a busy one for us, too. We've needed to get some work done on one of the cars which we managed to finish up this morning. DH brought me home and then he headed back to the office. Now, I can get some of my normal stuff done.
If I lived in Florida then winter would be my favorite season, too. lol I'm surprised how long the heat is lingering this summer. It's been a long time that it's been this bad. I think the 90s will be gone after Sunday. *cross fingers*
Thank you for your dedication and commitment to visit me when you get a moment. I know how busy you are and I honestly understand, so do what's right for you. You won't hurt my feelings. :) Have a great week...it's gonna by so fast, dear friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteWe just arrived home, I'm happy to report. It is another sizzler down here and it's good to be off the road and able to stand down from family responsibilities at least for a few days. Thanks again for understanding the gist of what I am dealing with even though I have not discussed specifics with you. Thanks for trusting that I will visit you when I can during the busy weeks and months ahead. I am grateful for your ongoing friendship.
Take care and I'll see you soon, dear friend Cathy!
Wow! Diana Ross and Whitney Houston this time.
ReplyDeleteI believe I have that Ross song on an album though not the one you mention (either a Best of or Greatest Hits--I'm not a purist when it comes to record collecting.) I'll be honest there are songs of hers I like better than that one, but I liked the video. In addition to looking younger I swear she looks a shade thinner in the black-and-white part (not that she's even remotely overweight in any part of that clip.)
Too bad you couldn't show Whitney herself. I take it she's not available on YouTube, or did she have a video of that song but the visuals just didn't fit the Soul Train theme? Doesn't matter. I'll take Whitney any way I can get her.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for popping in and hopping aboard the Shady Train, good buddy!
I might be "stuffed absolutely clean full of wild blueberry muffins" (movie quote from The Thing From Another World) but I believe black & white film is more "slimming" than color. Diana Ross has always been on the slim to skinny side. It's interesting if "Chain Reaction" was included on your Diana Ross' Greatest Hits compilation, given that it performed so poorly on the U.S. pop chart (#95) and only reached #85 on the R&B chart. It was a completely different scenario in the UK and in several other countries where the single was a major hit. It's an unsolved mystery why Lady Di's record failed so miserably stateside.
Yes indeed, there is an official music video for Whitney Houston's "So Emotional." Here you go:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YjSHbA6HQQ
The reason why I didn't use it in this post is because I found that great clip of the Soul Train gang dancing to the song. Every episode of Shady Train MUST include at least one video of the Soul Train gang on the line. Them's the rules. I was also fortunate to find that rare clip of the kids boogieing on The New Dance Show in Detroit. I never even knew about that show until I found that vid recently.
Thanks again for dropping by, good buddy Kirk. Have a great weekend!
That's a whole lot of Sheen. Charlie Sheen would say he's winning.
ReplyDeleteI remember most of those songs and many were pop hits.
Hi, Alex!
DeleteThanks for being here, good buddy! I'm pleased to have you aboard as the Shady Train leaves the station on its 13th run to Soulsville U.S.A.
I'm glad you remember most of these seven songs. "Lovelite," the single by O'Bryan, was very hot and the official music video played often on MTV. It topped the R&B chart yet only Bubbled Under at #101 on the pop survey - a 100 chart position difference! Evelyn King's "Love Come Down" also topped the R&B and Dance charts and did much better on the pop side, cracking the top 20. I think it all depends on which region of the country you were in at the time. R&B and soul were extremely popular in the places I have lived over the years.
This month in history: 20 years ago, on September 22, 1999, a our country was blessed with a great president - Martin Sheen - as the TV series The West Wing premiered on NBC. :)
Thanks again for coming over, good buddy Alex!
80s music, particularly mid-late 80s can be hit or miss for me. I don't always recognize a lot of it. Now, the Commodores? Bring on their funk anytime! Loved their music AND loved Lionel Richie! (or is that Ritchie?)
ReplyDeleteHi, Kelly!
DeleteHow are you, dear friend? Thanks a lot for coming by to take a ride across the tracks of your mind into the exciting world of Soul!
Did anyone ever tell you that you have "eclectic" taste in music? :) I didn't realize you were a funk fan. Do you remember this Commodores song - "Too Hot Ta Trot?" It's kind of a lost relic, a song I haven't heard very often in recent years. To answer your question, it's Lionel Richie (w/o a "t") and Ritchie Valens (with a "t").
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed this edition of Shady Train. Thank you again for coming, Kelly. I really appreciate it. I wish you and Pat and your other canine companions a safe and happy weekend!
It's not one I could have brought to mind, but I know I've heard it before.
DeletePat says he hopes you have a good weekend, too... and to stay cool! I'm sure the rest of the pack would agree.
Hi again, Kelly!
DeleteAwwwwwww... thank you, Pat! I wish I were there to pet you and give you a biscuit. Kelly, your outdoor animals wouldn't like the weather we're having here in Florida.. Day after day we've been under a heat advisory. It is miserably hot day and night, but at least we didn't lose power in the hurricane like some poor souls.
Thanks again for coming to chat with me, dear friend Kelly. Have a great weekend!
Me again, Shady. Elly and Sadie said to tell you that even though it's very hot here, too (it was 100 here today and the heat index was 107) they went to the vet yesterday for their dreaded 3-year rabies shot and he assured them they would be fine in the heat, that most outside animals are acclimated to it and do just fine. So, they came home and spread the word to the others outside. Of course Alice, Mabel, and Pat are not acclimated, so I don't let them stay out for long stretches (though Pat would like to so he could keep everyone in line through the fence!) Hopefully this eases your mind some. ;)
DeleteGlad you dodged the Dorian bullet. I have other buddies, blogging and otherwise, up the east coast that also were spared with minimal damage.
Hi, again, Kelly!
DeleteThat's good to know. I didn't realize that animals kept outdoors become acclimated to the heat and do AOK. May I assume that the same cannot be said about extreme cold? I don't know how cold it gets in your neck of the woods in winter, but I am sure you and your pups have it figured out. Please let the other members of your fur family know that Shady cares about them.
That stubborn storm seems determined to rake communities all the way up the East Coast and into Canada. I'm glad it is weakening. There are still a dozen more weeks left in the hurricane season and I'm sure we will face more threats before it's over.
Thanks so much for connecting with me, Kelly. You're a terrific friend!
What do you know... here I am AGAIN! We actually did discuss cold weather, too. (the vet and I ... not the dogs and I) He said he's seen more cases of dogs being burned by owners setting up heat lamps than dogs actually affected by the cold (and that's also a fire hazard). We don't get the kind of cold you would remember from your PA days, but we do get below freezing at night pretty often, with occasional dips into the teens. Our daytime temps seldom stay below freezing the rare times they get there. So.... even on the coldest nights, I don't really worry about the dogs. Suzy (being the smallest with a thinner coat and a bigger mouth) gets locked in a crate on those nights, draped with a towel to keep her warm. As for the other six, we have a two "doggy igloos", another crate, a small doggy barn, numerous beds and blankets to pile up in and a large doghouse that can easily accommodate two or three dogs (for a "three dog night"!). That said, Jed's favorite thing to do in the bitter cold is to go out in the woods and make a nest in the leaves. He's got a super thick coat anyway.
DeleteSo...now that you and your readers know far more about my dogs than they ever wanted to, I'll stop! ;)
Hi, Kelly!
DeleteI'm late replying to you because I spent the day traveling to another city and helping family members move (in 90+ degree heat). I am just now getting finished with the task and logging on. I am very happy to see you here again and to know that you like to share info about your pets with me and other readers. I am very interested because I love animals and miss my Cocker Spaniel Toto (the inspiration behind Shady Bunch deejay character Toto Moto). Mrs. Shady and I have decided not to get another pet at this stage of the game.
I'm happy to read about all the care you have taken to provide shelter from the cold for your outdoor dog family. Jed is a hardy one to venture out to the woods and make a nest of leaves. Like it is in your part of the country, it can drop below freezing several nights per season here in Central Florida, and I have seen the temps dip into the 20s and even upper teens once or twice in the 35 years I have lived down here. A few years ago I was caring for a couple of stray cats on my property. When winter approached I bought a deluxe cat igloo with a plush carpet lining. I even put an extra cushion inside for added comfort along with a sock filled with catnip. I never once saw the cats use the thing!
You are always welcome here, Kelly, and I am thankful for your input and your friendship. Take care and enjoy the rest of your weekend! :)
Not my most favorite music but as always you have a fab post.
ReplyDeleteGood to know you have not been swept away by Dorian !
Keep dry !
parsnip
Hi, Gayle, Winston and Agatha!
DeleteThanks for swinging by, dear friend! I'll be posting older oldies soon, but I am sticking to my pledge to present variety here at Shady's Place - music to suit nearly every taste. That's why I created series like Shady Train and the various dance-pop rave parties I have presented over the years. Thanks for the compliment on the style of the post.
We had another breezy day today, with wind gusts that I believe are the outer bands of Dorian, even though the nasty storm is now accelerating away from us and up the coast. Good riddance, I say!
Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Gayle, and have a super weekend!
Hi Don and Shady! It's a hot Friday nite in Fort Worth, but the music is always welcome! I have to say you had a pretty hot lineup this time around, with a different flare with the ADC Band. It was fun to watch the dancers from 'The New Dance Show' in Detroit! I like to see folks from other parts of the country dancing just as seen on Soul Train, and know that dance and music was enjoyed all over.
ReplyDeleteDiana Ross could always keep the audience spellbound with her flashy costumes and great hair! Of course it didn't hurt to have that fantastic singing voice either! I didn't know this song, "Chain Reaction", but liked it very much. Same goes for the Commodores! Sharp dressers, and great musicians! Lionel is so cool! Somehow I missed O'Bryan along the way..."Lovelite" is a good song, and his energy is admirable. He truly has a great stage presence!
Well, you guys, I didn't know any of these songs, but I found a soft spot for each one of them. I know you aren't in the habit of asking which song and artist might be a favorite, but I usually have a favorite, and this time it happens to be Booker Newberry III-where in the world has he been? He has a unique voice, and style-pretty good dancer, too! His voice is soft, yet strong, and he made me think of Tom Jones! I really liked "Love Town"!
I hope you are faring well along the coast, Shady! I know the storm has weakened, and fortunately made a bit of a detour, but, what devastation it left in the Bahamas! This is a wonderful post for sure, thank you for your hard work putting this together, and getting Don to host the festivities! Have a great weekend, dear friend! ♫
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteThanks a lot for joining the fun and riding the train, dear friend! I saw your comment last night at bedtime and wanted to sleep on it. (Sorry I got it wrinkled. :)
We have had oppressive heat for several days now and there's more in store, but late last night we had a heavy downpour which might help a little. Sorry to know you and Scootie are also sweltering over there in Texas. How's his new school year going?
i'm thrilled that you got so much enjoyment out of the soulful performances in this edition of Shady Train. That video from the Detroit based music TV program The New Dance Show was a great find. The dancers on that show were nicely dressed and were great dancers, much like the Soul Train Gang.
I was astonished at how Diana Ross was made to appear to go back in time to the mid 60s in "Chain Reaction." The set, the dancers, the costumes and the hair styles brought back memories of the teen music shows Shindig! and Hullabaloo, and Diana looked 20 years younger as well. It's a mystery why the single performed so poorly in America while becoming a smash across the pond.
I always enjoy knowing which artists and songs you like best, and I'm glad you singled out Booker Newberry III. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Booker had the voice, the look and the charisma to become the next Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass or Marvin Gaye. As it turned out, Booker was one of the many black artists from the U.S. who found greater success in the UK. His "Love Town" was a top 10 hit in the UK but missed the Billboard chart entirely. On the U.S. R&B chart it climbed only halfway up the ladder, finishing at #46. Three years later in 1986 he returned to the soul chart with "Take A Piece Of Me," a record that peaked at #61.
Wanna know my Pick To Click for this post? It's Evelyn King. For decades I knew her only as Evelyn "Champagne" King, the one-hit-wonder (I thought) who gave us the disco hit "Shame." It was only in recent years that I began to delve into her catalog and discover the wealth of R&B gems she recorded. Having bought a double CD of her hits I have named Evelyn King the greatest 1980's artist that I missed the first time around and fortunately discovered in the 21st century.
Thank you again for joining the fun, dear friend Suzanne. I wish you and Scootie a wonderful weekend. I have another week of travel, work and domestic responsibility ahead, but I will do my best to keep posting on a regular schedule. My next post is slated for next Thursday, September 12. I hope to see you then!
OK, Shady! You got me on Evelyn Champagne King! I had not heard of her before, and thought "Love Come Down" was a good song, pretty smooth and safe...then I went back for more evidence, and WOW! I watched a few of her videos, and find that she is everything you say she is. I especially liked "Shame". I watched a live video of it, and she has so much "UMPHF" (or however you spell it)! She had the audience going, and even played the Tom tom drums!
DeleteAnd, I wanted to mention that I remember the "Ultra and Afro Sheen" products. I think they are still sold in drug stores and Wal Mart!
Scootie is still trying to adjust to getting back to school, but is doing okay so far. We went Thursday nite for a parents' meeting where they outline the events for the year. They have scheduled his graduation for May 28th, 2020. Then, he moves on to the next school! It's all happening too fast now, Shady!
Have a wonderful weekend, and safe trip ahead this coming week! ♫
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteThanks for coming back over to chat, dear friend!
I'm happy to know I got you curious about Evelyn King. Evelyn released some of her records using that name and other records adding her nickname "Champagne." Hers is a great story. I read that the Bronx born thrush relocated to Philadelphia and was working as a cleaning woman at Sigma Sound Studios when she was discovered. Imagine that! Sigma was Philly's soul studio. It was founded by recording engineer Joseph Tarsia who was formerly chief engineer at Philly's Cameo-Parkway Studios. Sigma Sound was used by Gamble & Huff to create the famous Sound of Philadelphia. Many major stars recorded there. Evelyn King, who was probably discovered singing as she cleaned, became part of the scene. At first she was nickamed "Bubbles" and later "Champagne." I don't understand why she released records using two different versions of her name. I believe she might have been more successful had she kept the "Champagne" in the middle.
I checked Amazon, eBay and Wal-mart online, and I think the product "Afro Sheen" has been discontinued. There are still many listings for Johnson Co. "Ultra Sheen" hair products and I also see "African Pride" and "African Royale" braid sheen sprays and "Afro Love" shampoos and conditioners. Let's put it this way: I haven't needed to buy much in the way of shampoos or hair gels for quite a few years now. :)
Thanks for the update on Scootie. I wish him well as he makes the adjustment at school and especially next year when he transfers to a new school. Yessum, he's growing up right before our eyes and it is a blessing he has you in his corner. :)
Mrs. Shady and I hit the road again tomorrow morning and should be back here at our "home away from home" by next Thursday when my next post begins running. Thank you again for expanding our discussion thread and have a delightful weekend, dear Suzanne!
The Soul Train! My favourite! I love the hippest train in America and I love your blog for hosting the hippest train.
ReplyDeleteI'm familiar with Diana Ross and the Commodores, but I'm not familiar with the other performers. I love Evelyn's sound and I'm going to check out more of her work. Any other recommendations?
Dog sitting dear friend and I'm exhausted. Puppy and I are getting ready to rest and I'm about to catch some Zzzs. Have a great evening.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for joining the party and riding the big train to "Love Town," dear friend. I'm pleased to see you! You are exhausted from dog sitting. I'm also pooped at this hour because Mrs. Shady and I needed to travel across the state and help family members move to a new residence in the boiling summer heat. It was hard work and I'm glad it's done.
I'm happy that you liked the lineup of soul and R&B artists offered by Don Cornelius in this edition, and glad you have discovered Evelyn King, my Pick To Click, the absolute greatest artist of the 80s that I missed first time around and discovered in recent years. In addition to this hit of hers, "Love Come Down," I can recommend "Shame," "I'm In Love," "If You Want My Lovin'," "Get Loose," "Action," "Shake Down," "Your Personal Touch: and "Give It Up" - the latter from the soundtrack of the horror movie Fright Night. That last one is probably my favorite Evelyn King recording of all.
I hope you are back to 100% health. Get some rest. I need some myself after all that moving work. See you soon, dear friend JM!
I'm happy to report that I'm 100% back to health and I've been making sure I get 7-8 hours of sleep each night. 🎃
DeleteToday I listened to classical all day, I'll have to listen to the songs you suggested tomorrow. Thank you.
I hope you are well rested too, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteGlad to hear it, dear friend! Getting 7 or 8 hours of sleep per night is something many of us only dream of. :) I can't say I'm getting much rest these days because I am still in another city helping family members get settled in. The work is almost nonstop.
Good for you. Classical music cleanses the palate and makes The Commodores or Insane Clown Posse pop even more next time you listen to them.
Have a great day, JM!
Hi Shady! I'm glad you're not washed away from that hurricane! I'm not familiar with the tunes but of course the Commodores and Diana Ross are not strangers to me! The first tune had me a bit distracted by the dude wearing the graduation cap and gown! Plus was O'Bryan channeling a bit of MJ with his outfit? I also saw a few one gloved gals dancing too. Sorry, you know I'm always checking out the wear of the year when I see the videos! The Soul Train dancers are so fun to watch. And so skinny! Geez, someone give them a sandwich! Anyway, I hope all is good with you and yours! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteThanks for coming by to check out the tunes, dancers, clothing and hair styles in these vintage videos from Soul Train and The New Dance Show. Detective Shady sez that O'Bryan single was released in 1984 when Michael Jackson was at his peak. Michael Jackson imitators came out of the woodwork and many other recording artists tried to look, dress, move and sound like The King of Pop. It's no wonder dancers also wore MJ style gloves. Yessum, I believe there were many more skinny young people back then. They were not tied to social media and electronic devices and got more exercise than many kids do today.
Thanks for keeping us in mind as the dangerous hurricane made its way toward Florida and up the coast. The forecasters kept assuring us the storm would turn sharply to the north and I'm glad Dorian got the memo.
Thanks again for joining the fun and riding the train, dear friend YaYa!
Have a wonderful week!
