Hi, folks! I'm
Brian Griffin...
The personable
pooch from
Family Guy.
I'm sure you remember my stints as a guest host on the old blog
Shady Dell Music & Memories.
Today I'm back and inviting you
to get mellow with me on Eclectic Avenue, a music playlist to
suit nearly every taste (unless your thing happens to be
heavy metal, gangsta rap or kazoo instrumentals).
MARILYN MARTIN
You are about to see one of the most beautiful singers
in the world, (I wouldn't mind dancing with her leg),

duet she recorded with Phil Collins, a song used in the soundtrack of the 1985

Hi Shady,
ReplyDeleteAh, mellow, a blog post I needed this morning as I continue to rest. My goal is to be 99% better by Tuesday. I've only heard ABBA and Olivia Newton John, the rest were new to me. I love each song, but I think I like Marilyn Martin out of all of them. Her voice is soulful and relaxing.
I know what I'll be listening to as I scrapbook later today: this mellow blog post of yours. :) Have a great Saturday, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for coming over on a Saturday and claiming early bird honors, dear friend!
This is the 4th or 5th appearance on my blogs of Family Guy's cool canine Brian Griffin. I'm happy to report that Brian will be joining his bowwow buddy Toto Moto as an S-P-M-M radio DJ starting next year. Don't miss the fun!
I'm glad you singled out Marilyn Martin as your Pick To Click. That music video of hers was very popular and heavily requested on the MTV style station where I worked in the 80s. We had an afternoon veejay segment that featured adult contemporary music like "Move Closer." Phyllis Nelson recorded the original version of the song and it too is excellent, but I always favored Marilyn's steamy, sultry video performance.
You've been under the weather much too long, dear friend JM. I hope you are back to 100% soon, 99% at the very least. Thanks again for coming and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Hi Shady,
DeleteToday I was 99%! Woohoo! I was going to scrapbook tonight, but I spent the day cooking and I'm a bit warm because we turned the AC off... I think I am going to lie under the fan, cool down, and rest. Always tomorrow and I hope I am still 99% tomorrow.
Woohoo! I can't wait to see more of Brian. He was always my favourite. Have a great Labour Day, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteI'm excited to learn that you are almost back to 100% health, dear friend. When you have your health, an ordinary day is a fantastic day. As you might expect our A/C is still running full blast down here. We are sweating out the days, still waiting for Dorian to make that sharp turn to the north. I hope the forecasters know what they're talking about because the storm could plow right through Florida if it doesn't turn.
I'm glad Brian is your favorite character on Family Guy. He'll be back in 2020 along with other members of Shady Bunch, old and new, so stick around.
Have a great day and week, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteRainy day here in Pennsylvania and I'm going to scrapbook today, as well as cook later. I'll be going back to both jobs with full health. :) I needed this long weekend.
I really hope Dorian misses Florida; my aunt and uncle will be moving to Marco Island after the storm passes and I'm hoping there is minimal damage to their house. Keep safe, Shady and Mrs. Shady! I'll be thinking of you both.
Have a great Labour Day, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteHappy holiday to you, dear friend! I'm thrilled that you are bouncing back to full health just in time to return to work.
With Dorian only moving at 1 mph, there's no telling what it will do. "It ain't over till it's over." I don't think Marco Island falls within the "cone of uncertainty," and therefore it should be safe from the storm's wrath.
I hope you enjoy your rainy day of scrapbooking. Have a great week, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteI hope you are safe and all turned out okay.
Have a great Thankful Thursday.
Thank you, dear friend JM. The cane passed us by, but we have had several breezy and even windy days in a row, even though the storm is now hundreds of miles away!
DeleteGreat selection of artists, friend Shady, thank you. I call the 70s my chameleon years as to me they were life changing, ever transitioning and truly earth shaking years (gypsy existence with all the trimmings to convent life with all the trimmings to glorious motherhood with all the trimmings … all tightly packed into 10 short years). Hugs and purrs from this AB cat and cat Thunderbutt :) PS: Best wishes to lovely Olivia as she is still fighting hard for her life. c.
ReplyDelete… sorry, Brian but I like Snoopy better :)c.
DeleteHi, cat!
DeleteThanks for popping over on a Saturday, dear friend! I'm delighted you enjoyed the eclectic mix of tunes offered by Brian Griffin in this sneak preview of his new SPMM radio show.
Thanks for letting me know all the changes that took place in your life during the 70s. The same could be said about my life during that decade.
Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend cat. Please smooch your pretty kitty Theo Thunderbutt for me and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
In reply to your second comment, I need to ask: What about blog mascot and Chief Petting Officer Toto Moto? Do you like Snoopy more than Toto? :)
DeleteThanks, cat!
… nice tie, Toto Moto :) c.
Delete:) :) :)
DeleteLots of good stuff this weekend, Shady... both familiar tunes and those that are new to me. Of course it always depends on my mood at the time, but as of right this minute I like the Buddy Johnson number best! What a great sound drawing from both the 40s and 50s.
ReplyDeleteHope you're prepped and ready for Dorian, Shady. Hoping and praying that European model will prevail and it will stay off the coast (if that's still what it's saying.... I haven't looked this morning).
Hi, Kelly!
DeleteThanks for dropping by on a Saturday, dear friend!
Eclectic Avenue, Brian's Griffin's new radio show here at Shady's Place, is designed with people like you (and me) in mind, people with eclectic taste in music. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed that Buddy Johnson number and the vintage film clips of energetic and in some cases acrobatic young couples cutting a rug. Stay tuned for more music variety when Brian Griffin's Eclectic Avenue makes its official debut in 2020.
Thanks for your concern about the hurricane. The way it's looking now, it won't be a factor for us. That's quite a change from a few days ago when it appeared the storm was using GPS to find us in Central Florida.
Thanks again for coming to visit, dear friend Kelly. I hope your weekend's going well and I wish you a wonderful week ahead!
Yes! I love the selections and they are putting me in my zen mode for my weekend of call. I especially love dear Chad and Jeremy..I had their pics plastered in my 5h grade notebook to gaze on and try not to feel like I was cheating on the Beatles! Olivia is another of my favs and I wish her well in her continued health issues. It's also my 45th wedding anniversary today so I'm going to post a quick blog post and stay close to my phone for any hospital calls. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend and I do hope you're safe from the approaching hurricane..so scary! You and Mrs. Shady are in my prayers along with my family members that are down there...my niece just moved there a few months ago! Take care!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteHappy anniversary to you and Jack, dear friend! I'll be over to The Pines shortly to say hello and see your post. Thanks for coming over to experience these jarring juxtapositions as Family's Guy's musical mongrel Brian Griffin presents a preview of his new show Eclectic Avenue.
I'm glad you mentioned Chad and Jeremy. It seems to me the fine recordings made by the English duo aren't played as often in the 21st century as those of other British Invasion acts. Thanks for sharing that you were a fan girl and had pics of them on your notebook in 5th grade. Chad and Jeremy had a smooth and mellow sound that was anything but square. I forgot to respond to cat's comment (above) concerning Olivia Newton-John's health issues. Thanks for reminding me. She is a 20th century icon and I'm sure millions of fans around the world are equally concerned about her in recent years.
I hope you don't get called in to work on your anniversary. It was smart thinking on your part to do some traveling and celebrating last weekend just in case you get tied up today or tomorrow.
I don't know where your niece is located, but it appears Dorian will pass far to our east and not impact our weather very much. Many more tense weeks remain in the long hurricane season, something I don't look forward to.
Thank you again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend YaYa. Once again I wish you and Jack a very happy anniversary!
Hi Brian...I sure do remember you on Family Guy, and fondly as Shady's guest host on previous posts. It's good to see you back again with your Eclectic selections!
ReplyDelete"We Don't Talk Anymore" is a great song! I have never seen the video or even knew Cliff's name, but I have learned that he was born in Lucknow, India where my mother grew up! I scrolled over some of his work, and find that he has been a performer for many years. The background music to "We Don't Talk Anymore" gives the song a dramatic feel, and of course Cliff is great, isn't he!
Olivia Newton John does have such a mellow, and soft voice. However, she can really project her voice and make a believer out of you. "Have You Never Been Mellow" is a very pretty song of hers. Her performance in "Grease" was so outstanding! She is truly an artist and actress to be reckoned with!
Folks were serious dancers in the 40's and 50's when it came to the "jump blues", or rock and roll dances. What a cool video with Buddy Johnson's "Crazy Bout a Saxophone". That was some pretty wild and great dancing, and I did catch the glimpses of Cagney in the video.
"Willow Weep For Me" is a good song of Chad and Jeremy's. To me, the arrangement was a difficult one, and they pulled it off. It's not always an easy feat bringing two voices together in unison and harmony, with the success that these two guys had. I loved their song "Yesterday's Gone."
This is certainly and "eclectic" session, Brian! And, what a treat to include Sina and Darla here. They nailed an already 'cool' song! This group is so talented, with Darla's magnetic voice, drawing you in, and Sina's talent on drums.
This post is definitely a delightful mix of the old and new! Thank you Brian for helping Shady out today. You're the perfect host.
Have a safe week, Shady! Stay away from any winds that come your way, dear friend! ♫
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteThanks for hustling right over on day one, dear friend! I'm glad you are here to enjoy Brian Griffin's latest gig as my guest blogger, and I'm happy to know you remember the lovable martini sipping canine from the old blog.
Thanks for sharing that tidbit. I think you might have told me once before, but it is interesting to know that your mother grew up in Lucknow, India, where Cliff Richard was born. I had forgotten all about Cliff's late disco era hit "We Don't Talk Anymore." I was thrilled to come across that video of Cliff doing the song on a bandstand in a foreign land, the German music show Starparade, a clip that has been beautifully restored. The big band that backed Cliff on the show is the James Last Orchestra. James Last was known for making "happy music." He reportedly sold an estimated 200 million albums over the years. Last died here in Florida four years ago.
I'll tell you this, Suzanne. I've had ONJ's song "Have You Never Been Mellow" playing on repeat in my head all day long, and I can think of much worse fates. Libby does have a deceptively powerful voice. She was and is a magnificent singing star and actress. Brian and other SPMM deejays will be playing more of her recordings in the months and years ahead.
You have a good eye to have picked out Jimmy Cagney in the crowd of onlookers in that vintage film clip synced to "Crazy 'Bout A Sax." I'm glad you enjoyed it. I love to listen to Chad And Jeremy. They and another British duo, Peter and Gordon, gave us some of the best and most listenable recordings of the mid 60s.
I'm glad you were the first to mention the exciting cover of "Try" performed by Sina, Darla and other young musicians from around the world. These collaborations are a joy to behold and this rendition of "Try" is absolutely wonderful. Darla's vocal treatment contains traces of both artists who recorded the song in the late 60s, R&B/soul diva Lorraine Ellison and blues rock icon Janis Joplin. Props to Darla and her colleagues for giving us a new classic version.
Thanks again for your kind visit and cheery comments, dear friend Suzanne, and for the well wishes during the approach of hurricane Dorian. It looks like this one will miss us, but Florida still has a long way to go before the long tropical season is finally over. I wish you and Scootie a happy weekend and a wonderful week ahead!
My favorites today are Buddy Johnson (I think I spotted James Cagney in that video) and Olivia Newton-John.
ReplyDeleteI never heard of Johnson but am well aware that there's 1950s rock and roll songs all throughout the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, that went under such names as jump blue or boogie woogie (I once went so far to argue on my blog that the Andrew Sisters were protorockers.) Rock really does seem to be part of the blues-jazz-swing continuum rather then something that sprung out of nowhere during Eisenhower's second term.
Olivia Newton-John quite simply has a lovely voice. And she's more versatile than I think people give her credit for, what going from country to soft rock to disco (oddly enough, she accomplished the last feat by appearing in a movie that takes place in the 1950s.)
I love ABBA, but there are songs of theirs I like better. I recall the Cliff Richards song from high school.
Enjoy your Labor Day Weekend, Shady.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for dropping in, good buddy! I'm happy to have you here for the sneak preview of Brian Griffin's Eclectic Avenue (not to be confused with Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki). Brian will be back in 2020 as a fully trained SPMM radio DJ, so please stand by.
"You dirty rat!" You spotted Jimmy Cagney in the crowd as did Suzanne (above). As a film buff. I'm sure you know that Cagney never uttered those exact words in a film. In Blonde Crazy (1931) Cagney said: "Oh, that dirty, double-crossin' rat." In Taxi (1932) Cagney barked: "Come out and take it, ya dirty, yellow-bellied rat, or I'll give it to ya through the door!" (I wonder if he was shouting at Andy Kaufman.) I'm delighted to know that you and others dig Buddy Johnson's jump tune featuring a wailin' sax and streetwise blues lyrics. I am also jazzed that you gave thumbs up to Olivia Newton-John doing "Have You Never Been Mellow," one of the big hits from the early part of her career. I agree Libby is a versatile artist - terrific and prolific. The more I listen to "Mellow, the more it grows on me. It's a sensational recording, one that topped the pop and AC charts, crossed over to the top 3 on the Country chart and earned ONJ a Grammy nomination.
Thanks again for reporting in, good buddy Kirk. I am breathing easier now that the cane will apparently pass a couple hundred miles east of my location. I wish you a safe and happy Labor Day as well, good buddy!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteI'm here! The weekend went faster than I wanted and now here we are in a brand new month. I can hardly believe it's September. First off, how are y'all doing after Dorian came through? I hope everything is okay for you guys. He took an easterwardly turn from his originial projected path. The Bahamas took a hard hit I heard with 8 reported dead the last time I checked. Mother Nature definately not at one of her finer moments. Saying prayers for those poor people and the families who lost loved ones.
On a less serious note, let's talk mewsic. I remember Phil Collin's 'Separate Lives' but never knew who the female vocalist was until now, so I appreciated the introduction of Marilyn Martin. She has a beautiful voice. I'm not sure why I don't remember her solo. I listened to a lot of adult contemporary tunes throughout the 80s. Cliff Richards' 'We Don't Talk Anymore' is a blast from the past. His chart topper came out the year DH & I got married. Olivia Newton-John...ah, now that's the way I remember gals looking and sounding from the 70s and 80s. I guess I didn't realize at the tie but I had a girl crush on her. I didn't even know what a girl crush was in those days. lol Yeah, I'm quite nieve in many ways. 'Have You Never Been Mellow' is one of my favorites from the 70s just soft and lovely sounding it makes me feel like snuggling in a warm sweater but I'm gonna wait on that since it's much to warm to do that right now. Give me a couple of months and it'll be sweater weather in east Tennessee. Now, I'm gonna have to go to YT to listen to more ONJ oldies. ABBA...wow another great band from the past! Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were pAwesome together. Their voices worked amazingly with the purrfect harmonizing blend that's almost like magic for the ear to receive. What a shame the band broke up! :( Thanks for sharing these incredible songs from yesteryear and for sticking with me faithfully throughout the summer during sparse blogging/visits schedule. Have a boogietastic week and happy belated Labor Day, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteHappy post-Labor Day and month of September to you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to see what that daffy dog Brian Griffin is up to. Seems you found a lot to like in this sneak preview of his new SPMM radio show Eclectic Avenue which officially starts next year.
Thanks also for your concern about the hurricane. We are having a beautiful sunny day here on Florida's west coast, far from the storm and its latest projected path. Prayers needed for those in the cross hairs and those already hit very hard by the ferocious turbine.
I'm thrilled that you remember the Phil Collins duet "Separate Lives" and enjoyed finding out that MM, Marilyn Martin, who reminds me of that other famous MM, Marilyn Monroe, was the female vocalist who sang with Phil on that hit single. Marilyn's "Move Closer" was one of the most requested videos on my MTV style station's daytime easy listening veejay program. The vid played so often on our 3/4 inch broadcast tape decks that I needed to re-dub it several times onto fresh tape from the master reel provided by her label Atlantic Records.
I'm glad you enjoyed hearing the Cliff Richard song and that it brings back happy memories of the year you and DH got married. ONJ is a treasure and I'm sure you weren't the only young lady to have a gal crush on her. I was also smitten. When a recording artist is liked equally by both men and women they achieve superstar status, and that is what happened in Liv's case. That newly enhanced recording I posted adds layers of sound to the original making it more enjoyable, I think, than ever before. Two of these videos could have been used in my series Bandstands in Foreign Lands. Cliff Richard performed on German TV and ABBA on French TV. Both vids are wonderful last minute finds that I wanted to get posted before they vanish like they tend to do. The song "Super Trouper" gave Anni a chance in the spotlight. As you know, she was often eclipsed by Aggie, especially when it came to media attention.
It won't be long before sweater weather arrives in your neck of the woods, especially if you guys head over to visit the Blue Ridge. We're still months away from cooler air here in Florida.
Cathy, thank you very much for coming today. Your splendid comment says it all about genuine blog friendship. We have it, you and I, and I am very thankful. Enjoy your week and I'll see you soon dear friend!
Tom,
DeleteSweater weather can't come soon enough but I'm trying really hard, really I am to not wish these days away. I don't do well with the extremes but thankfully our extremes aren't as bad as other places. So, I really shouldn't complain. What a whiner I am! lol
I'm glad y'all are doing okay and experiencing some beautiful weather. Other than the news of Dorian's backlash on the Bahamas, I haven't heard how east coast is being treated by the hurricane's force but my prayers are with everyone facing him. At least this is something we don't have to worry about. We aren't even getting any rain from this storm.
Once again, thanks for all of the wonderful mewsic and I shall look forward to future installements in this series. Have a terrific Thursday, dear friend. :)
Thanks, Cathy!
DeleteYesterday and last evening we experienced very strong breezes that reminded us of the ferocity of the hurricane many miles to our east. We have been through a few category 1 and weak category 2 storms down here and they were terrifying enough. I can't imagine what it is like to be pinned down in a strong cat. 5 hurricane.
Thanks again for coming by and have a great day, dear friend Cathy!
I'd never heard of Marilyn Martin. She definitely has a smooth-sounding voice. Thanks for sharing these.
ReplyDeleteOn a personal note, things are going very well. My new job is keeping me super busy!
Enjoy your week!
Hi, Sherry!
DeleteThanks for coming by, dear friend! I've been missing you and I'm happy to know that things are going very well for you lately, including your new job.
I often wonder why Marilyn Martin didn't become a bigger star. She certainly had the looks and the voice. I read that, after her early success in the mid 80s, Marilyn went dormant for a quarter of a century before releasing an album of contemporary Christian music in 2012, a song set produced by her husband Greg Droman. Marilyn, now age 65, has a day job as a realtor in Nashville.
Thanks again for your visit and comment, dear friend Sherry. Please stay in touch!
I've never heard Marilyn Martin, but today I really enjoyed her breathy, sexy quality. And, you're right, she is quite beautiful. Of course, Olivia is always a joy. I had to listen to that oldie straight through. I'm an ABBA fan, too. I think you either love them or not. Their music makes me happy, and in my book, you can never be too happy. Thanks Shady!
ReplyDeleteHi, Cheryl-Lee!
DeleteThank you very much for coming over to breeze down Eclectic Avenue with Family Guy's mangy musical mutt Brian Griffin. Seems you enjoyed his play list of mellow songs designed to make you feel happy.
I'm delighted that you and other readers enjoy this video of adult contemporary songstress Marilyn Martin. With her looks and singing ability Marilyn deserved to become a major star. As it turned out she only had three hit singles and is now entering her senior years in Nashville. The recordings of Liv Newton-John seem to make everybody happy and I'm glad you enjoyed listening to her mid 70s hit "Never Been Mellow." ABBA has a string of hits a mile long and Brian and other Shady Bunch deejays will be playing their songs, their official music videos and their vintage live performance clips in the months and years to come, so stay tuned.
Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Cheryl-Lee. Take care and have a wonderful month!
Hi Shady!
ReplyDeleteI hear the versatile Marilyn Martin is touring once again with Stevie. Did you know she also sang with David Hasselhoff?
Willow Weep for Me was one of those tunes that fluttered in the memory bank as though I should remember. So I looked up Billie Holiday, and sure enough, it was one my great g-ma dearly loved.
I liked the lively Buddy Johnson song - and video - at least as much as the lady in the kitchen did – that was fun!
Ironically, the first time I heard this Cliff Richard song I wanted to phone an old friend; to whom I didn’t talk anymore. Cool song, funny world ;-)
Sina is always a treat to watch and listen to. Darla has a great voice. I liked the whole arrangement, actually.
Have a relaxing weekend!
Hi, diedre!
DeleteWelcome back to Shady's Place, dear friend! Thanks for checking out the sneak preview of Eclectic Avenue, the new SPMM radio show that will be hosted by Brian Griffin, that daffy dog from Family Guy, beginning next year.
No, I wasn't aware that MM is currently out on tour with Stevie. I tried to find recent live videos of Marilyn and only found one 16 second clip uploaded earlier this year. Now 65 years young, Marilyn looks as fresh and lovely as she did in that 1986 video. I'm very happy to know she is still doing live performances as we approach the 2020s. I also saw on YouTube that MM has sung with Hasselhoff. Given the great shape she's in, I'm surprised she isn't starring in the remake of Baywatch. :)
I'm glad you were able to trace the Chad and Jeremy version of "Willow" all the way back to blues great Billie Holiday. I'm also delighted that you enjoyed the oldest oldie of the bunch, Buddy Johnson's early 1955 recording. I'm thrilled that the Cliff Richard song gave you the urge to get back in touch with an old friend. I am also very pleased that you gave props to Sina, Darla and the other young musicians stationed in various parts of the world who collaborated on that very capable cover of "Try."
Thank you again for coming to the party, dear friend diedre. Brian's got his mojo and I hope you've got your muse and get some more writing done. Please take care and stay well until we meet again!
