Wingman: Chris Griffin's Flying High on Wings of Pegasus!

Hi again, everybody!
I'm Chris Griffin...
the crazy, mixed-up,
rebellious teenager
from the TV series
Family Guy.

You might remember my
appearances on Shady's
old blog Shady Dell Music
Memories when I intro-
duced German drummer
girl Sina and English
singer and musician

Today I'm back with my latest discovery, Fil Henley,
leader of the British rock band Wings of Pegasus.

In 2013 Fil was a contestant on The X Factor UK where he
performed "That's Metal (To My Ears)," a song written
by the band. In this vid a shirtless Fil turns heads
as he plays to the crowd in Piccadilly Circus.

Wings Of Pegasus (from 2013 album Persistence)

Speaking of Sina, the German drum prodigy is
back with us today, this time teamed up with
featured artist Fil Henley of Wings of Pegasus.
Listen as they do a cool cover of "You Give
Love A Bad Name," the 1986 hit single from
Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet, one of the
best selling albums in U.S. music history,
a song written by Jon Bon Jovi along with
the band's lead guitarist Richie Sambora
and Songwriters Hall of Fame
inductee Desmond Child.

"Wanted Dead Or Alive" is another great song
from Bon Jovi's 12X platinum album Slippery
When Wet. Once again here's Fil Henley
and Wings Of Pegasus with a cover
that's a cold blooded killer!

In 1981 the American rock band Journey
featuring lead singer Steve Perry scored
a top 10 hit with the single "Don't Stop
Believin'." Wings of Pegasus performs
a more than capable cover of the
classic soft rock song.

In the early weeks of 1985 Don Dokken's
pop metal band gained a top 30 hit on
Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart
with "Just Got Lucky." Fil Henley
and Wings of Pegasus got it
covered but good!

Mr. Mister was a popular 1980s new wave pop
band formed in Phoenix, Arizona, and based
in Los Angeles. One of their biggest hits was
"Broken Wings," the lead single from their
second album Welcome to the Real World.
The song spent two weeks at #1 on the
pop chart just before Christmas in 1985.
Fil and the gang give the pop classic
the Wings Of Pegasus treatment.

No broken wings for
Fil Henley & his band.
Whether he's doing
originals or covers, Fil

ROCKS! RULES!
SLAYS! KILLS!

Look out world!...

Fil Henley's Wings Of Pegasus
is taking off for the stratosphere!

Now this is Chris Griffin saying
goodbye and reminding you...

that you've gotta fight
for your right to rock.

See you soon!

  1. Now I'm in familiar territory!
The covers were all very good. The one for Don't Stop Believing was the best. His voice and music complimented the original version well. Not so sure on Broken Wings though - his voice is almost too high.
As for the original song, it's very catchy. It has a late 80's-early 90's vibe to it.
Well done with the picks today!

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for hustling over to take early bird honors, good buddy!

I'm delighted that you enjoyed the set of songs by Fil Henley, no relation to Don Henley, I assume. I agree that Henley (essentially a one-man band called Wings of Pegasus) nails "Don't Stop Believing." He should delve into the Journey catalog and do more of their hits. On his original song performed on X Factor UK and in this clip roaming around Piccadilly Circus, shirtless Henley reminds me a little of Jim Morrison in appearance.

Thanks again for coming to meet Chris Griffin's latest musical discovery, Fil Henley of Wings of Pegasus. Have a great week, good buddy Alex!

  2. The difference between a 1980s mainstream rock band like Journey and a 1980s heavy metal band like, say, Dokken really wasn't all that great, as Mr. Henley demonstrates, yet die-hard fans of both groups at the time would have acted as if they were as different as Mozart and Louis Armstrong. It really takes somebody from a different generation to see the similarities.

However, successfully (in my opinion) turning Broken Wings into something approximating a hard rock song, well, that surprises even me.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for joining the fun as Family Guy's Chris Griffin presents his latest rock discovery - Wings of Pegasus!

You make a good point, Kirk. Many of the 80s hair bands that were labeled "heavy metal" at the time sound like pop Musak and look cuddly and "mother approved" compared to the extreme metal sounds and Gothic shock videos produced by today's bands. Don Dokken's band performed softer pop metal songs. Other examples of pop metal and prog metal bands of the period include Night Ranger, Winger, Whitesnake, Ratt and Poison. I was lucky to have a job in MTV that brought me in contact with members of these bands and others when they came to play at local venues and dropped into our studios for interviews.

Thanks again for being here, good buddy Kirk!

  3. I'm not always big on covers like this, but he does a commendable job! I was a major Journey fan and, while he's certainly no Steve Perry when it comes to vocals, I like his version. I enjoyed several of the others, too.

So That's Metal (the first one) is an original? I thought it was quite good, though out playing shirtless when everyone is in their coats make me laugh a little. ;)

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks so much for coming over early, dear friend. I'm glad to see you!

I'm pleased to know you enjoyed these covers of rock classics performed by Fil Henley aka Wings of Pegasus. So far we all seem to agree that his Journey cover was the best of the bunch. I am also happy that you enjoyed his original song "Metal To My Ears," the one he sang in the TV talent competition. I too was amused to see Fil prancing around Piccadilly shirtless on what appeared to be a raw and rainy day whilst onlookers were bundled up.

Thanks again for joining the party and evaluating Chris G's latest discovery. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Kelly!

  4. Tom,

X-Factor is a show we never got into. Is it still aired? Anywho, Fin Henley is a nice discovery. I like his classic rock style and does a great job covering some of the great metal groups from the 80s. I like their original song (first vid) and that's not because he was shirtless, either. I'd rather wished he left it on. At first glance I thought I was seeing Jim Morrison but as he got closer to the camera I knew that it wasn't. Thanks for the mewsic share, my friend. Have a great week!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for reporting in, dear friend. I'm delighted to have you over!

The television talent show X Factor has been running somewhere in the world ever since 2004. It is popular in many countries. I read that the version called The X Factor: Battle of the Stars is being revived later this year.

I'm glad you enjoyed Fil Henley's covers of 80s classics and also liked his original song. I am pleased that you agree with me that Fil came across like Jim Morrison as he worked the crowd w/o a shirt on. It's the kind of stunt the leader of The Doors might have staged.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Cathy. Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday and have a wonderful week!

    1. Hi, cat!

Thanks for coming down, dear friend. I'm pleased to see you!

I know you aren't a big TV watcher, cat, and therefore it doesn't surprise me that you aren't familiar with Chris Griffin, the chubby kid from Family Guy. Chris made several appearances on the old SDMM blog in recent years and I have big plans for him here at Shady's Place. I think the boy's got potential! :)

I'm happy that you liked these cool covers of rock hits of the 80s done by English zinger and guitarist Fil Henley aka Wings of Pegasus.

Thanks again for coming by, dear friend cat!

  6. Really nice covers today! I enjoyed Fil and his guitar talent and even remembered all of them. The shirtless video was a bit funny..everyone was dressed for cold weather and he's shirtless walking around playing an electric guitar? Well, you have to get your name out there and be noticed! Looked like the young ladies in the crowd enjoyed it! His tune with Sina was so good, she's really talented. Glad I stopped by today as always and learned about a different, new artist. Still the best music teacher in blog land Shady! Take care and Happy Fall!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks for dropping in, dear friend! I'm happy to know you remember these original soft rock and glam metal recordings and enjoyed the capable covers performed by British guitarist and singer Fil Henley.

I'm glad Fil's shirtless public performance made you smile. It was fun to watch how spectators reacted to his bare chested singing and playing and he wove his way through the crowd doing his band's original song. I have seen several artist videos shot in this manner. It is an inexpensive way to make a video and an effective way to generate buzz. I'm pleased that you enjoyed this latest appearance by Sina, the talented German drummer girl who collaborates with a multitude of young up-and-coming musicians and singers around the world.

Thanks again for checking out Wings of Pegasus, dear friend YaYa. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  7. OK...I'm just going to jump in here with my two thumbs up! That Fil and his band are really great! Their original song in the beginning "Metal To My Ears" is one cool song. And the video gives us a taste of what these guys can do.

All of their cover songs are amazing, and Sina jumped right in there with her marvelous talents to "You Give Love A Bad Name". I am a fan of Bon Jovi, and Fil's covers of their songs rate pretty high on my scale. The best one, "Don't Stop Believing" is so popular for Bon Jovi, but if I didn't know better, I would think that Fil was the owner of this one!

You truly get the gist of Fil's being with his covers-his unique voice is raw, yet fresh, and he is a very good musician!

"Broken Wings" is such a beautiful song-WOW! What can I say? I would rather see him perform this on stage, as I feel the video didn't do Fil justice. Oh, he was fantastic, but his voice projected more feeling that was visible on the video. This one is my favorite, however.

Well, Chris-you've been busy and I'm proud of you for putting this post together...thanks for helping Shady out from time to time!

Have a great week dear Shady and Chris! Great job! ♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks for coming over! I'm thrilled to have you on hand to meet and greet talent scout Chris Griffin's latest discovery - Fil Henley - who, for the last several years, has made a name for himself and become a star on YouTube by means of his Wings of Pegasus project.

I'm happy to know you like this exciting one man band. Fil has the kind of voice that lends itself well to covers of 80s light rock, new wave, glam and pop metal. I appreciate the fact that he stays very close to the sound and style of the original recordings and produces all the music from scratch in his studio, not merely singing over the original music tracks. I agree that Fil's vocals have a slightly raw edge, conveying just the right amount of passion and emotion, and yet they are refined and pleasing to the ears. You're right. Fil's voice projects more emotion than does his face. I actually like that subdued style more than an overwrought performance. In several of his movies, Elvis Presley was quite wooden, I thought, as he lip synced his songs. He phoned it in, and yet his charisma and magnetism made them pop.

I have had this post on the back burner for a year or more. Here's W.O.P.'s latest cover uploaded three months ago, "Lay It On The Line" by Triumph:

I'm delighted that you enjoyed Chris G.'s latest offering. Thanks again for setting aside time during your busy evening to pay us a visit. I wish you and Scootie a happy Wednesday and hope the rest of your week goes well. Take care, dear friend Suzanne!

Thanks a lot for coming over so promptly, dear friend. I appreciate it!

I'm glad you enjoyed seeing that crazy mixed-up kid Chris Griffin again. I think he wants you to be his mommy. :) I am also delighted to know that you liked his latest musical discovery Fil Henley, the one-man band better known around London town and the social media circuit as Wings of Pegasus. I'm glad you liked Fil's vocals and Sina's drumming.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend BB. Take good care of yourself and enjoy the rest of your week!

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for taking a look and a listen as Family Guy's Chris Griffin presents Wings of Pegasus! I have been following Fil Henley's channel for a couple of years and I haven't seen any evidence of other W.O.P. band members. I think Phil is a one man band who mixes tracks in the studio to create a band sound. Regardless, the British singer and musician has talent and has turned in some great covers. I'm glad you think he's amazing.

Thanks again for being here and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend JM!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I hope you are having a nice weekend, dear friend. Thanks for dropping in! For this tribute post I picked the Fil Henley covers I like best, but there are several others on his YouTube channel. You might enjoy them.

Every day is "one of those days" anymore if you think about it. I have decided to regard days filled with trials and tribulations as normal. When you make that adjustment in your thinking a good, ordinary day becomes a fantastic day. :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, dear friend JM!

    4. Hi Shady,

My aunt's toilet clogged and leaked. Didn't really sleep last night, and she didn't have a plunger. I put soap and hot water in the toilet, went to bed and after 4 hours of sleep, I noticed it drained. I also turned off the water. Texted my aunt, turned the water on... still overflowing. She told me where the plunger is, tried it. Still overflowing, so I am keeping the water off and I told my aunt. Some leaked into the basement. I cleaned it and no damage. I've unclogged toilets at home, but I never had the overflow problem at home. I'm not touching it anymore; my aunt asked what bathroom it was. I'll let them handle it. Not being mean, but I really don't know and I don't want to make it worse. I got it to stop overflowing and that is an A in my book.

You know, after this TED talk, I might have to play this again to ease some of the tension. :) Have a great Sunday, dear friend!

    5. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Welcome back over to Shady's Place where, in addition to the music and memories, we discuss everything but the kitchen sink including clogged toilets. :) Plumbing problems are actually my second favorite thing in the whole wide world. (My favorite thing is tossing a bowling ball into the air and catching it in my teeth. :) I'm sorry you had so much trouble at your Aunt's house. I am sure she will understand that you didn't want to continue to mess with it for fear of making matters worse.

Thanks for the chat and have a wonderful week, dear friend JM!

    6. Hi Shady,

My dad fixed it. I was on the right track, however. I didn't want to keep flushing and since dad is a pro. I'm waiting for the towels to finish drying and it'll look like nothing happened!

Gotta love house stuff, eh? I know when I become a homeowner, I'll probably call a plunger. LOL!

    7. We just had three new toilets installed, so we're good to go. :)

I hate to "turn away business," but I hope your Aunt doesn't read my blog and learn the gory details of your misadventures. :)

Have a great week, dear friend JM!
