I never watched Batman Forever and therefore was not familiar with "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me." I just listened to it on YouTube and can't find any relationship to the original song other than the title inspiration. The 1995 rock song was penned by Bono. "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" was written by Harry Noble and first recorded in 1952 by traditional pop singer Karen Chandler.

ReplyDeleteRobert Morgan is a new name to me but it's great fun to learn about the southern Cal DJ. What fun to try to get the timing right between the two videos! Unfortunately some of the vids paused too long maybe it's my internet connection this morning tripping me up or maybe it's just YT. You shared some great sounds from the 60s the decade I was born. I can't say I remember these songs at the time of their release since some came out in the early 60s when I was definitely too young but these songs were such hits that they carried through the years making them some of the best oldies of our time. I'm not sure if I knew who Sonny & Cher were until the 70s when they got their TV show. They seemed like such a mismatch couple. Sonny was short and Cher was tall but really how much taller was she than him? Maybe, I'm remembering wrong. Speaking of Sonny, we watched an old flick that he was in with Telly Salvalas and I can't remember the name of it now but it was good old war movie . Oh yeah, The Sea Wolves! It was a fun film to see if you like that sort of thing. I have to be the right mindset to enjoy the genre. I believe we caught this on Amazon Prime. Take it easy and enjoy your day. DeleteThanks for coming over, dear friend! I'm happy you appreciated this introduction to Robert W. Morgan, one of the most popular DJs in the history of Southern California radio. As a teenager growing up thousands of miles away from LA, I never heard of Morgan and didn't even know about him. I got acquainted with Robert W. in 1970 when I bought his volume of the Cruisin' record album series. He is one of my favorite personalities of the series, and that's why I am proud to give him a spot on The Shady Bunch deejay team on SPMM Radio starting next year. I wish everybody had high speed internet so that they could consistently get these piggyback intros to work for them. The result is a real thrill, at least for boomers like me who grew up loving the seamless top 40 radio broadcasts of the 60s.
Yessum, Cher was taller than Sonny and that probably helped the duo become famous, that and the friendly put-downs Cher routinely laid on her hubby. Theirs was a comedy act as much as a pop singing act. I haven't seen The Sea Wolves. I'll have to look for it. I enjoyed Telly in The Dirty Dozen and Mrs. S and I highly recommend it.

DeleteThanks for the 'The Dirty Dozen' movie recommendation. You'll be happy to know that we've seen this old classic film and you're right it's definitely one to share with others. It had quite the stars in it, too. There are a quite a few old war movies worthy to watch like 'The Eagle Has Landed' and 'The Great Escape' to mention a few but I generally have to be in the mood to view them to fully enjoy them, though. They don't make movies like that any more.

On my own blog recently I was reading the comment section of a post of mine that, according to my stats counter, still gets a lot of attention--it was my tribute to Leslie Gore right after she died--and I wrote that I have a slight preference for '60s music to the music of when I was in high school, the 1970s. Listening to these great songs again make me realize it may be more than slight.
ReplyDeleteI knew John Lennon played keyboards on occasion--him at on the white piano singing "Imagine" has become somewhat iconic over the years--but I think this is the first I've seen (though I've obviously heard) him play the instruments with the Beatles. I like how his grinning face keeps popping up right under McCartney's chin.

Seems every generation believes their music is the coolest and the best, and yet younger people like you and even some of today's teenagers are discovering and regularly listening to 60s artists and their music, some preferring it to the styles associated with their own teen years. On Robert W. Morgan's new SPMM Radio show coming in 2020, you will hear the biggest hits of the 60s. Unlike the shows hosted by Hy Lit, Jerry Blavat, Dell Rat Tom, Debbie the Dellette and certain other Shady Bunch deejays, Morgan will not stray from the national top 40 and delve into regional and local obscurities. Robt. W plays the hits.
Right you are, Kirk. That Beatles clip reminds us that, in addition to rhythm guitar, John played various other guitars, banjo, piano, electric piano, Hammond organ, harmonium, Mellotron, harpsichord, clavioline, saxophone, harmonica and percussion. John had a great sense of humor. (Remember his Tom Snyder interview?) It's fun to watch John making faces throughout that clip, but sad when they sing the words:

ReplyDeleteI have to tell you, it took me 2 times trying to catch the piggyback just right, but 3 times is a charm, right? I got better as the segments continued.
I did enjoy the lineup and was really excited to hear "409". This song was one of my all time favorites, and my husband Karo was impressed that I knew all of the words, including the last line..."4-speed, dual quad, positraction 409".
The Beatles were so multi-talented, even in the early days. I like watching videos where they are not only standing there, but actively playing keyboards and piano. I like when Ringo sings, and believe he aged so gracefully!

I'm delighted to introduce you to Robert W. Morgan, one of my favorite top 40 DJs from the Cruisin' vinyl album series, now tapped to become a new member of The Shady Bunch in 2020. The piggybacks are hard to get right because no YouTube video seems to want to load at the same rate twice and all videos take different amounts of time to load. When a piggyback doesn't flow seamlessly as it should, I simply click to refresh the page and try the couplet again. Occasionally you might need to click the second video at the one second mark of the first, or even click both videos simultaneously to achieve perfection. When you get it right, you are experiencing the authentic sound of top 40 radio in the 60s, one of the most exciting aspects of growing up in that era.
I am very impressed that you know the lyrics to "409." It's a sign of greatness when an artist, group or band has songs to "waste" on the B sides of singles. The Beach Boys had many charting B sides and some of those fab flips became major hits and enduring classics. Glad you enjoyed the Liverpool moptops in that super vintage clip.

DeleteI wanted to add that Kirk's noting of John's grinning under Paul's chin was kind of fun! This was back when they were more fun-loving as brothers! We all just loved their haircuts-maybe they were grinning because they were lip-syncing the song, haha!
Each of these artists were special and unique, and left their mark on a lot of us that we have carried into our adulthood. Sonny and Cher, and the Mamas and The Papas, and great California sounds from Jan and Dean, and the Beach Boys.

I forgot to mention that a couple of my teenage buddies owned muscle cars and loved to brag about having automotive accessories and upgrades like a "posi rear," a Hurst competition shift knob, mag wheels with racing slicks, etc. I always wanted a muscle car but never had one. Instead I tooled around in my dad's VW Beetle. :)
With John making whimsical faces, The Beatles reminded me of The Monkees in that film promo for "We Can Work It Out."
Yessum, artists like these did indeed leave an indelible mark on us boomers. Stay tuned, because Robert W. Even though Robert is no longer with us, (he passed away in 1998 after a battle with cancer), I intend to keep him and the music he played alive by means of his new show here on SPMM Retrosonic radio.

DeleteThank you very much for dropping by, dear friend! I am very happy to see you and appreciate the visit. I know I owe you (and three other friends) an email. Please forgive me. For five straight days, Mrs. S and I were in another city working hard in the Florida heat helping family members move and get settled. We just got back home late Wednesday and, frankly, I needed a day or two to rest and collect my thoughts. I was prepared to email you this weekend. I will do so either today or tomorrow.
I'm delighted that you were able to make these piggyback intros work and listen to the 93-KHJ jingle leading in to some of the great oldies of the 60s. A high percentage of 60s records had "cold opens" or "cold intros" and I decided to burn off 7 of them in a single post in the form of this preview tutorial. When it makes its official debut next year, the SPMM Radio show Get Morganized with Robert W. Morgan will have a play list that includes one or two songs with cold opens and the others will allow Robert W. to voice-over the intros the way he and other top 40 DJs did so well in the 50s and 60s.
I'm happy you enjoyed these classic hits by The Beatles, Mama Cass & Co and Sonny & Cher. Thanks for the thoughts about hurricane Dorian. Central Florida had a target on its back for a few days with the projected storm track cutting through our area. Slowly but surely the spaghetti models broke in our favor and the cone of uncertainty shifted farther and farther east. In the end the storm was around 200 miles away from us as it marched up the east coast. We still have several more weeks of watching, waiting and worrying before the hurricane season ends November 30.

I was just getting ready to comment yesterday when the battery went dead on my laptop! I was really enjoying the music of my youth and all the memories it brought back. Such a fun segment! I love the music of the 60's probably because I was a teen at that time and music was important on my transistor radio! All the tunes were great but I so love the Beatles video and when John chimes in and sings: "Life is very short"...well, it was for him wasn't it. Anyway, have a good weekend and watch out for that tropical storm heading your way. We had lovely fallish weather last week but have been cooking this week. It's 90de here today...too hot for me! Almost as hot as being Morganized!

I too had my transistor radio with me at all times, even when I was mowing the lawn, and kept it tuned to my local top 40 station. I memorized the station's top tunes surveys week by week.
Yessum, I felt a twinge when John sang "Life is very short." John was my favorite Beatle and favorite post-Beatles solo artist. I am still mourning his death and will continue to do so the rest of my life.
Thanks for the heads-up about the tropical storm. I see there's another system coming toward Florida and two more in the pipeline. 'Tis the season. I'm delighted to know you enjoyed more great weather up your way until the heat of summer made a curtain call.
