On Christmas Eve, 1954, a shot rang out. On Christmas Day, up-and-coming
R&B singer Johnny Ace of Memphis, Tennessee, died of the wound to his head.
Reports state that Johnny's life ended tragically at age 25 as a result of his own
recklessness. He had been playing with a gun thinking it wasn't loaded when it
fired the fatal round. Some say Johnny Ace sounded like Johnny Mathis but
with soul. Johnny Ace is best remembered for the song you are about to hear.

Hi, Jerre!
DeleteWOW, good buddy, you are the early bird for 2021! Thanks a lot for coming over on the holiday. It's great to see you! I'm sure you noticed that Shady Seaweed presented another Sam The Sham record for your enjoyment in the previous post.
I'm happy to know you enjoyed the haunting R&B ballad by Johnny Ace, a record that became a massive hit after his untimely death. You'll be happy to know that with Wibbage legend Joe Niagara coming on board this year as a Shady Bunch regular, you can expect to hear many more fine doo-wop and early R&B ballads at Shady's Place.
Thanks again for coming over early and for your continued friendship and support through the years, good buddy Jerre.
Happy New Year to you!
Geez... that turf war clip at the beginning was so entertaining I had trouble focusing to move on to the rest of your post! I had to watch it several times!
ReplyDeleteOf course I know the Stones music as well as the Foreigner song that was covered, but I think everything else was new to me. Except, maybe, Pledging My Love. It sure did sound familiar.
Hope the new year is getting off to a great start for you and the Mrs.!
Hi, Kelly!
DeleteThanks for coming over on day one of the new year, dear friend! You nearly claimed the coveted Early Bird title.
I'm happy to know you were amused by Peter Griffin getting into a turf war with an alley cat. :)
I'm a little surprised the ancient Johnny Ace song "Pledging My Love" sounds familiar to you, seeing as how it charted way back in the early months of 1955. I'm thinking you might have heard another artist cover the song at some point. I hope you enjoyed Lexington Lab Band's cover of that Foreigner hit.
Yessum, the year is off to a pretty good start on my side of the screen. I told Mrs. Shady about you losing Kelly the cow. I am still feeling blue over your loss. Here's hoping for a much better 2021 for you, for me and for everyone.
Thanks again for checking out Pt. 1 of my New Year special, dear friend Kelly. Part two is coming next Wednesday, so please stick around!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
ReplyDeleteYes, Shady and Friends can keep me entertained! I look forward to listening all through the year.
Busy day here, dear friend. Opened the Happiness Box Project, spent hours photographing and I didn't even photograph everything! I still have 8 months to organize. I'm only one 4 hours of sleep right now.
After Shabbat, on Sunday, I'll be clearing out under my bed since we get new carpet next week. I will give this a listen to on Monday, when I am back at work.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteLong time no see! (...not since last year :) Welcome back in to Shady's Place for another year of music, madness and merriment, dear friend!
Seems like you're running on empty. I hope you get some rest and sleep. Hope you enjoy this Part 1 play list at work on Monday.
Have a safe and happy holiday weekend, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteOh, I was. I'm cursing the addition of new stuff; mom is calling me a hoarder, but a lot of it is for when I get my own place. A lot for a bedroom, but not enough for a home. LOL! I'll be consolidating crafting supplies and looking into a new bookcase once the carpet is placed.
Dear friend, what a wonderful playlist! Brown Sugar and Hot Blooded are some of my favourite songs. I started with those first, to get me pumped up. I'll be listening to these gems later on my walk. :)
The others I'm familiar with, but I'm not a big fan of Rob Stewart. Gave it a listen and it's a good New Year's Day jam. The others had me singing along, I remember listening to these two with dad when I was younger and you just made me nostalgic. That's really tragic about Johnny Ace.
I agree with Yaya, I'm going into this year slowly and with hope. I enjoyed my quarantine and I've outlined some changes I am doing in my Writing.com blog (no mentioning my problems with mom, she is who she is and I can't change it... stoic philosophy this year: I can only control myself). I have projects planned, a new role, so I'm ready for whatever 2021 brings!
I just can't believe it's a new year already. It seems like the years fly by! My Happiness Project is 5 years old, the Happiness Box is 4 years old. Time flies when you're having fun, I suppose!
Have a great day, dear friend. Happy New Year!
*new carpet instead of new stuff.
DeleteHi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteI'm glad you took these tunes out for a test drive and enjoyed them. I figured that the more recent rock songs would be the most familiar to you and friendly to your ears. It surprises me to find a female who doesn't swoon over Rod Stewart. Most do. I'm glad the Part 1 New Year play list triggered memories of listening to music with your dad. I'll bet he remembers a few of these. Stick around for Part 2 coming on Wednesday!
I'm happy that you are waxing philosophical about your relationship with your mom and also that you have the juices flowing and projects in the works for 2021. People often think they'd be happier with nothing to do, but I think most of us are happier when we keep busy. It prevents us from dwelling on our problems and regrets and offers a distraction from the terrible stories that appear day by day in the news.
Yessum, the days, weeks, months and years are flying by. Let's make every day count and commit random acts of kindness.
Have a wonderful week, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteI have to have that waxing philosophy about mom because it keeps my sanity! The fencing people are here and putting up the fence. Dad asked me what I think and I lied through my teeth. I can’t say, “I hate this. I hate all of the changes you are making!” New carpets, new couches, I hate it all. All these changes sure do make me nervous. Our neighbours cut down their bushes, so they could see right into our living room. Still don’t like all these changes, though.
I think I’m worried because although I know they’re not moving, why would someone make all these changes? Also, before dad retired she was worried about money. it makes me worried about the spending. Then again, mom did this when she inherited money and it’s just who she is. Mom loves her house and loves changing it up. Different strokes for different folks.
All I know is I'm continuing debt payoff and I like seeing money in the bank. I'm going start being more intentional about my money and I have found that I prefer experiences over stuff. My scrapbooks are the exception, however.
I agree with that! I know when I'm busy, I am at my best. I think it's because it keeps us focused or our focus is away from mental clutter.
Anyway, there was something about Rod Stewart that I couldn't get behind. It might be his style. Otherwise, I loved this playlist and later when I go for a walk, I'll play it again! I can't wait for part II.
This Thursday will be my last time in the office for a while. I'll listen to the new playlist while in the office. :)
Have a great day, dear friend!
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteYessum, I would say you're on the right track keeping your lips sealed and not saying anything to provoke your parents. Fly under the radar as much as possible, keep practicing thrift and saving $$$ and keep looking into ways to achieve independence.
You mentioned that you can't get behind Rod Stewart for some reason, possibly his style. Do you mean singing style, clothing style, hair style? All of the above? I wish people could tell me specifically what they like or don't like about a particular artist. You aren't the only one who is vague about it. Most people are.
Stay tuned for the second batch of new S-P-M-M deejays and songs coming in tomorrow morning's post. Until then, have a great day, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteYes. I think I'm so worried about mom making good on her promise that I'll be left homeless. However, I'm learning that control freaks like having that air. Creating a vague sense of not-knowing keeps the other person stuck. My dad has told me about that and he ignores her too. Sometimes, I think I take after her and when we are unhappy, we tell people we're going to move, but we don't mean it. I've learned to stop and appreciate what I have.
I don't really care for his voice. His earlier music, the themes were okay, but I don't care his vocals. His newer music, I don't like the content, as well as the voice.
Looking forward to it, dear friend!
Happy New Year Shady and gang! I can't believe another year has started but I'm going into this one slowly, and with hope as I mentioned on my blog. How sad about Johnny Ace. His beautiful voice cut short. I didn't know most of the songs here...just Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones. But that's why I come to the Dell...to learn and enjoy! Plus to say hi to you! I hope your year will be a great one!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteWelcome back for another calendar year of fun in the Shady, dear friend! I'm very happy to see your face in my place.
Yessum, Johnny Ace wasn't the only up-and-coming entertainment star to die far too young, and he isn't the only male artist to die by his own hand while playing Russian Roulette or otherwise toying with a gun he didn't think was loaded. Terry Kath, founder and lead singer of Chicago, died the same way.
I'm glad you enjoyed the oldies you already knew and appreciated the chance to learn a new tune or two.
Thank you for your kind visit and comment, dear friend YaYa. I wish you and your family many blessings in 2021!
Was Johnny Ace playing Rus--wait a second, I'm on the Internet, I don't even have to ask you, I can look it up...........Hmm, there seems to be some confusion as to whether this was Russian roulette or not. Big Mama Thornton says it wasn't, but others disagree (Thornton, of course, is primarily known today for singing "Hound Dog" before Elvis did. Odd that having a man die from a self-inflected gunshot wound right in front of her very eyes is now more a postscript to her story, but then, who in the world would want to be known for that anyway?) I'm reminded of Freddie Prinze of Chico and the Man fame. There was some question at first as to whether his shot-in-the-head-by-his-own-hand was suicide or, as Thornton and others say of Johnny Ace, he was just playing with a very dangerous "toy". In Prinze's case, it was indeed ruled a suicide, though his family later successfully sued a pharmaceutical company that made a mood-altering drug that the young sitcom star had been prescribed. One final thought than I'm off this morbid subject forever (unless, of course, for some reason you want to continue it.) In Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore interviews James Nichols, brother of Oklahoma City bombing felon Terry Nichols. Nichols agrees to show Moore his gun but only off-camera. After they go the next room, words appear on the screen that reads "Nichols has gun cocked to his head". Obviously he was just playing around and who knows whether the gun--which we never see anyway--was even loaded. But suppose the gun had gone off? Is there such a thing as a "lesser suicide" where a person doesn't so much want to end it all but just doesn't care if it all ends anyway? Like I said, morbid, so let's move on to something else.
I'm very familiar with the song "Obsession" but never know who sang it or keep forgetting who sang it and most likely won't remember who sang it a day or so from now. Even though I'm on the Internet I'm not going to look it up, but I think it's safe to say Animotion was a one-hit-wonder.........That is until curiosity got the best of me and since I'm on the Internet I looked it up and see that the band has three other Top 40 hits. However, after listening to those three songs I can honestly say I didn't recognize any of them nor their accompanying videos, so for me PERSONALLY Animotion is still a one-hit wonder. That one one hit is pretty good, though.
Finally, I was curious as to why whoever made that Stones video has "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" together as I've never known them to be played one right after another, so I......looked it up (I'm on the Internet, after all.) I see that "Bitch" is in fact the B-side of "Brown Sugar". Still, I don't know if that necessarily justifies coupling them like that. After all, if you recall how it used to work with singles, after the A-side was done, you had to pick the disc up, turn it over, and then, and only then, would you hear the B-side, which meant at the very least a minute's interval between the two songs. And that's assuming you even wanted to hear the B-side in the first place. I mean, there's a reason a B-side is a B-side, because it's usually thought to be the inferior of the two songs. Yes, Shady, I know you can give me a lot of instances where the B-side was in fact the superior track, but "Bitch" isn't one of them. To my ears anyway, it's a comedown after hearing "Brown Sugar". Maybe if "Bitch" had been played first, and then "Brown Sugar" it would have worked.
That's all I got. Happy New Year, Shady.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteHappy New Year, good buddy! Right now I am picturing your friend and mine Tracy Turnblad shouting: "Mama, welcome to the sixties!"
Thanks for checking out Pt. 1 of my two-part post kicking off 2021 and introducing the newest members of The Shady Bunch.
The "Rhetorical Question Guy" from GEICO Insurance says hello. In recent years, the film noiresque GEICO pitchman, a character played by actor Mike McGlone and intended to resemble Robert Stack or Rod Serling, has been the first face readers see when they visit my blogs on New Year's Day.
Speaking of Bob Stack's Unsolved Mysteries... thanks for providing more research into the deaths of Johnny Ace and Freddie Prinze and for telling me about the risky business involving James Nichols. As I see it, too many men yield to temptation, often under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and try to impress women, shock their friends and/or simply amuse themselves by playing with weapons. I am also reminded of the unfortunate case of Jon-Erik Hexum. In the mid 80s, Hexum and Summer of '42 actress Jennifer O'Neill starred in the action adventure TV series Cover Up. One day on the set during a delay in filming, Hexum sought to lighten the mood by putting a gun to his temple and pulling the trigger. He apparently knew the gun was loaded with blanks but did not realize that blanks can cause lethal injury if fired at close range. Hexum died a few days later after being declared brain dead.
With the success of his two 1976 singles "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive," singer/musician Gary Wright played a major role in establishing the synthesizer as a leading instrument in rock and pop music. From the late 70s through the 80s many new wave synthpop bands emerged on both sides of the Atlantic. Another Gary, Gary Numan, became a leading force in the British electronic music scene with his 1979 hit single "Cars." The LA-based band Animotion is one of the better known American synthpop bands thanks to their hit "Obsession" and three other songs that made the U.S. chart - "Let Him Go," "I Engineer" and "Room to Move." I remember the music video for "I Engineer" being played on the MTV style station where I worked at the time. (Yes, I really did work in TV. I am not a young Filipina living and working in Manila. I made that up.) Another American synthpop band of interest is the Twin Cities based group Information Society. You might recall their signature song "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)," a hit in the fall of 1988. The hook that made that single stand out and helped catapult it into the top 3 on the chart is a sample of Mr. Spock from Star Trek (Leonard Nimoy) speaking the words "pure energy."
TRIVIA: I used some of the lyrics from that song...
I wanna know
What you're thinking
There are some things you can't hide
I wanna know
What you're feeling
Tell me what's on your mind
... as the message readers see when they scroll down to the comment box here at Shady's Place.
Regarding that Rolling Stones B side "Bitch," I am finding that more and more YouTubers lately are getting into the bad (for me) habit of piggybacking two or more songs on a single video. I always try find vids that have the best remastered audio of the song I wish to post, and sometimes another song tags along at the end, requiring you, the kind reader, to either listen to it or bail out.
Thanks again for joining the fun as a new year begins, good buddy Kirk. Let's hope for better days ahead for all of us in 2021!
Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy and healthy 2021, friend Shady! Made it back safely from Mexico, and after jumping through some covid required hoops, now in quarantine til Jan14. Ali, from my lil store around the corner is supplying me with groceries ... Life is good ... smiles ... Sending love, c.
ReplyDeleteHi, cat!
DeleteHAPPY NEW YEAR to you and Theo Thunderbutt, dear friend! I'm delighted to see you.
Thanks for letting me know you are safely back home from Mexico. I hope you brought back many happy memories. Enjoy your mandatory quarantine. TT will be happy for the company and the extra LUBBINS. It's nice of Ali to keep you supplied in groceries while you are laying low. Keep your spirits up and let's all have a much better year in 2021, okay?
Thanks for dropping in and once again Happy New Year, dear friend cat!
Dear friend Shady, what a wonderful way to start this new year. Rod Stewart is one of my all time faves and paired with Robert Redford had me drooling! Obsession is a good one for me to dance to in the studio. Hope you had a fun New Year's Eve (safely of course). Looking forward to more of your fun posts in 2021. I am lagging again with my posts but hopefully going to get back in there today. Stay safe!

Hi, Janet!
DeleteHappy New Year, dear friend, and thanks for joining me for my first post of 2021!
It doesn't surprise me that you like handsome hunks Rod Stewart and Robert Redford. (Me likey Debra Winger! :) At the MTV style station where I worked at the time, our veejays used to run that Legal Eagles video for "Love Touch" in heavy rotation. We also used to play the official music video for "Obsession." I was going to use the video for this post, but the sound and video quality simply didn't suit me. Seems no YouTuber has yet gotten around to doing their remastering thing with that video. To refresh your memory, here's what it looks like:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIs5StN8J-0
As we swing into a new year, I hope your hubby is feeling better and that his symptoms are subsiding. My wish is for you and your family to have a safe, healthy and happy 2021. Thank you for sticking with me for another year of music, laughs and friendship, dear Janet!
Hi Shady. It's great to meet a few of your new DJ's for 2021. And Happy New Year to you!
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool video with Rod Stewart and some of my favorite actors/actresses! I don't remember this song, but I'll take anything Rod does, and give it "thumbs up" and A+!
Whew! Love that "Obsession"! This is one of the coolest dance songs ever, and will never grow old in a dance club or at a party! When things start to get a bit rowdy from lack of action, play this song, and they will utilize a lot of that energy on the dance floor!
Kudos to The Lexington Lab Band cover of "Hotblooded". Great job, and the musicians are so talented. I believe their hard work will pay off, and their smiles just added to the success of their cover.
What a tragic way to lose an up and coming great artist-to-be. Johnny Ace was so young. I enjoyed the song "Pledging My Love".
Peter Griffin and Brian video clips are always the best to gear us up for a great post as this is!
I have to go with my favorite, "A Million To One". I haven't heard that song in a lot of years. I got to dance with one of the boys in my sister's class to this song at a church dance, and I guess I'll always remember it. I loved the song then, and he was so kind to dance with me. Well...as years go by, I saw him at a high school reunion with my class and my sister's class combined. We talked as well as we could above the noise, and even though I looked somewhat familiar to him, he didn't remember my sister even having a younger sister! Go figure! We danced one dance, then off I went to have more fun!
Thanks you guys, and girls for this fun post! I always like The Rolling Stones music, I have some of their albums. They did so many songs, I haven't heard all of them, but they're on top of my list of favorites with The Animals, my list is so long.
Happy New Year to us all, and I wish for some normalcy to start peeking through 2021! Take care dear friend, Shady!
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteHappy 2021, dear friend, and thanks so much for swinging over for a visit! I'm happy to have you on hand to meet and greet the new crop of Shady Bunch personalities that will entertain you this coming year.
As you can see from the caption beneath the "Love Touch" video, that Rod Stewart song from Legal Eagles was a substantial hit, brushing the top 5 on both Billboard and Cash Box in the summer of 1986. It was heavily requested by viewers of the MTV style station where I worked at the time, played by the VJ that hosted the soft rock afternoon day part.
Yessum, I always liked the dance song "Obsession." If you didn't know better, you'd think Animotion was one of the many new wave synthpop bands from across the pond rather than one based in LA. It's a shame they couldn't string together more hits and also a shame that the official music video for "Obsession" has been neglected on YouTube when many other vids from the period have been remastered/restored in recent years. Here's the link to the official video if you'd like to refresh your memory about how the group looked and dressed:

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the Foreigner cover by Lexington Lab. I came upon the band only a few weeks ago and still haven't worked my way through all of their performances. "Pledging My Love" is a bit of a downer to start the new year, but Joe Niagara pledges to dig up the great doo-wop and R&B relics of the past and that's one of them. I don't think that Johnny Ace ballad was ever posted on my old blog. If it was, it had to be many years ago.
Thanks for being the first to single out soulful crooner Jimmy Charles and his very popular ballad from 1960. Around 1970, I stopped paying attention exclusively to the current top 40 chart and started getting interested in oldies of the 50s and early 60s, the period before I started buying records. "A Million To One" was one of the first songs I learned at that time. WOW - thanks for sharing how the song is linked to that specific event in your life all those years ago when you danced with that boy at the church social. If I had been that boy, I wouldn't have let you get away. I'd have kept you dancing with me the rest of the evening. :)
Thank you again for making time for a visit and for your excellent remarks, Suzanne. Stay tuned for Part 2 of my New Year special on Wednesday. You'll meet five more new SPMM deejays who will play sample songs from their shows. I wish you and Scootie a safe, healthy and happy 2021, dear friend Suzanne!
Happy New Year, Tom!
ReplyDeleteYikes, I composed a nice long comment to only have it eaten! I will try it again but I suspect something is afoot with Blogger. I remember Rod Stewart "Touch of Love" from the mid-80s, great song! I love the attorney's double side slit skirt. You can't buy a skirt or dress like this anymore. It would do designers good to pick up this style again. How tragic to read of Johnny Ace's death! I have to wonder if drugs or alcohol played into the accident. Truly sad! I really enjoyed Lexington Lab Band Foreign cover "Hot Blooded". They did a fabulous job and I'd like to hear more by them. Thanks for the introduction! I hope 2021 is nicer to you, my friend. I'm sure looking forward to us having a blowout year in Blogosphere doing what we always do best and that's being good friends. Stay safe and be well!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteThanks for coming over to experience Part 1 of Shady's two part New Year special, dear friend! I'm sorry the Blogger gremlins ate your first comment. Thank you for staying long enough to compose another.
Thank you also for the observation about the slit skirt worn by that dancing prosecution lawyer in the video for "Love Touch." I agree it would be nice to see designers making that style again and women wearing them. It just occurred to me that the Sam Brown courtroom themed video I posted a few weeks ago, the one for "Can I Get A Witness," might have been inspired by this Rod Stewart video. Rod's single peaked in the summer of 1986 and Sam Brown's single was released in May of 1989.
That Johnny Ace story is truly disturbing. Reportedly he had indeed been drinking in the dressing room between song sets and was waving a gun around. Witnesses said he pointed the gun at two women but didn't pull the trigger. He laughed and said he knew which chamber contained the bullet, then placed the gun to his head and -- BOOM! It was one of many senseless losses in rock & roll history.
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed your mewsical neighbors, the Lexington Lab Band, and their rendition of "Hot Blooded."
I have lots of fun and music in store for you this year, Cathy, and I am very pleased to have you along for the ride. Stay tuned for Part 2 of this New Year spectacular coming tomorrow morning. Meet and greet five more new members of The Shady Bunch deejay team and hear their song picks. HINT: You are the person who first introduced me to two of the people that are in that new crop of SPMM radio personalities!
Thank you again for coming, dear friend Cathy. Let's have a tunetastic year visiting, sharing, caring, listening, laughing and learning in Blogland!
Happy New Year!! Was it rollicking good fun? Mine was rollicking...all the way to the couch where my hubby and I are re-watching Downton Abbey and at 11:40pm, hubby went off to bed but not before giving me some Baileys. I called my brother and we ended up talking for almost 1 1/2 hrs! This is a nice way to bring in the new year even if I am late but, considering it is Tuesday and Orange nut is at his worst trying to manipulate the votes in Georgia, it is a good way to bring this day to some fun. Love the music and danced many times to Obsession. The way that young man died is so very sad but, I fear, so many have done this since. The Sticky Fingers album is a cover that is famous but one I can't stand to look at. My brother got this record way, way back and he still has it. Stay safe and I might ask...have you seen Spitting Image at all? Go to youtube and watch one about Orange nut. I think you will like it.
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteYou made it over just in time to see Part 1 of my NY special before it is replaced by Part 2 tomorrow. Thanks for remembering me, dear friend, and Happy New Year to you as well!
Your anecdote is coincidental because, just last evening, Mrs. Shady told me she wants to watch the entire Downton Abbey series again. I fancy Lady Mary and therefore I might join her.
Yessum, the devil went down to Georgia. Nuff said. :)
I'm happy to know you remember the synthpop club classic "Obsession" and danced to it back in the day. So did I! Yessum, too many men try to appear macho by putting guns to their heads. Not a good idea.
Hey, thanks for turning me on to Spitting Image. I haven't been following it but I just sampled some vids and they're hilarious!
Thank you again for checking in, dear friend BB. I wish you and your family only good things in the coming year. (Make that GREAT things.) Stick around and try for the Early Bird spot when I present part 2 of my New Year special tamale morning. Enjoy the rest of your week!
