  1. That was an easy one. Reruns of that show ran for years. And I certainly remember all of the other Hanna-Barbera characters. At one time, HB ruled Saturday morning cartoons.

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for hurrying over to reclaim the Early Bird title, good buddy!

I'm impressed that you correctly guessed the answer to my BRAIN BUSTER trivia question. I suppose we have years of reruns to thank for introducing younger generations to Pixie & Dixie.

Thanks again for taking the trivia test, good buddy Alex. You passed with flying colors. Have a nice weekend!

  2. Tom,

I may have seen some of the Mr. Jinx cartoons as reruns as a kid but I can't swear to it. I barely remembering seeing Yogi Bear cartoons. I've heard the expression 'bird dog' but always though it mean a dog trained to retrieve birds but Merriam Webster says "is one who steals another's date". The Everly Brothers' song is quite catchy. Have you shared Sue Thompson in past posts? I can't remember. She has an adorable sound and "Sad Movies" is new to me. Thanks for the stroll down 50s Memory Dream Lane, a time before God placed me in this world but the days of my parents' youth. Have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

It's great to see you, dear friend! Thanks for being the Early Bird runner-up this time.

It's funny. Around a month ago, the words "I hate those meeces to pieces" suddenly popped into my head for no apparent reason. It had been nearly 60 years since I thought about that phrase because that's how long it has been since I watched Huckleberry Hound and Pixie & Dixie and Mr. Jinks, the cartoon short embedded in the program. I decided to turn it into a trivia question post. As a boy and early teen, I watched Huck Hound, Yogi, Quick Draw McGraw and other cartoon shows.

Thanks for bringing to light the fact that "bird dog" means a person who steals another's date. I did indeed share Sue Thompson songs in other posts, but it was many years ago on the old blog. Yessum, Sue has a cute little girl voice, but I never get tired of hearing her sing. Believe it or not, Sue will be 96 years old a few months from now!

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Cathy, and have a splendid weekend!

  3. I ate many a bowl of cereal from my Pixie & Dixie bowl as a child. ;)

I always enjoy The Everly Brothers.

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Welcome back over, dear friend! I'm very happy to have you here to take the Brain Buster trivia quiz.

I should have known there was such a thing as a Pixie & Dixie cereal bowl. If you still have it, you could sell it on eBay and make a fortune! :)

Glad you like Phil & Don - The Everlys.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Kelly. Have a safe and happy weekend over there in Arkansas!

  4. Pretty cute, Shady! I remember Pixie and Dixie in those funny cartoons! And, Huckleberry Hound was good too. But...BOY, do I remember The Everly Brothers, who were almost as favorites to me as Elvis! "Bird Dog" is a cool song! I tried to get Karo to work on that one with me, because I always thought it was a cute song, for a duet! But, I couldn't get him interested, as much as he liked the Everlys! I liked seeing the old video of them when they were younger, and so cute!

Sue Thompson has a little, but strong country voice, and really belts them out there. I remember her name, but don't remember her music. I looked her up, but I see that she did some cover work, and that could be how I remember her. She has had a lengthy career hasn't she!

This was a cute trivia post, Shady, and I remember Secret Squirrel and the mole. How funny. They came up with the best names then!

We are still cloudy and rainy, Shady, with temps in the 50's. I like the cold weather, but I wish it would dry out some. I hope you are doing well, and staying cool also. Take care dear friend, happy weekend!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

Thanks a lot for being here on day one, dear friend! I'm pleased that you came over so promptly to test your Boomer memory on my Trivia Question. I'm happy to learn that you remember Huck Hound and the Pixie & Dixie and Mr. Jinks series that was embedded in it from H-ween season 1958 to H-ween season 1961.

I'm thrilled that you like The Everlys so much. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I have posted their hit "Bird Dog" on either of my blogs. I wonder why Karo didn't like "Bird Dog" nearly as much as you and therefore declined to record it with you as a duet. That reminds me of a great movie I just saw a few weeks ago, one that I highly recommend. It's Jenna Fischer ("Pam" from The Office) co-starring with John C. Reilly in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, a 2007 comedy loosely based on the career of Johnny Cash. It's a hoot. Watch this clip from the movie in which they sing their scandalous song "Let's Duet."

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oflbCHWZCBU&t=7s

Sue Thompson was an excellent country and crossover country style pop singer. Most of her success came from novelty songs. I liked her mid 60s hit "Paper Tiger" best of all.

Thanks for letting me know you also remember Secret Squirrel. I never watched that one, only Rocky & Bullwinkle.

We're having a nice sunny day with pleasant temps. Mrs.Shady has been working out in her garden most of the day. She told me we will soon have tons of green beans to eat, and that's fine with me.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Suzanne! I hope you and Scootie have a super weekend. I invite you back here in the middle of next week when Dell Rat Tom pays us a visit and plays a stack of Jukebox Giants from the Shady Dell!

    2. Hi again! The first cartoons we watched in the early 1950's was "Crusader Rabbit". It seems as though this was the first cartoon to air on TV. We had a very tiny TV in a large cabinet which sat on top of an old Victrola my parents had. We always enjoyed watching Crusader Rabbit.

I wonder if the Dewey Cox Story will be on Netflix. I've heard of that title before, and I may have seen the movie. I will have to check into it and make sure.

I hope Mrs. Shady's green beans thrive and you have many pots or "messes" as the river folk call it. I raised green beans every summer in the early to mid 1980's and canned them. At first, I didn't know how to store so many, and tried to donate them to a senior's home. I bagged them in freezer bags and froze them. But the home would not take them, because I froze them myself. I bought a large pressure cooker and started canning them. Fresh green beans all year long, you can't beat that! Now, I go to the farmers' market and buy a bag of them about once a month to fix on the stove with small new potatoes.

Thank you Shady! It's a quiet Friday night so far. I fixed a homemade cheeseburger for Scootie, then he fell asleep! Still trying to get his schedule in order-the poor guy! Take care, dear friend!

    3. Hi again, Suzanne!

My goodness, I had forgotten about Crusader Rabbit, but I watched him, too! Of course, there were Popeye and Woody Woodpecker cartoons from the movies that also ran on TV in the 50s.

I forget which service I was watching when I saw Dewey Cox, but I just discovered that you can watch it free on IMDB. All you need to do is register. Here's the title page:

      https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0841046/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Yessum, I plan to eat a mess of those garden fresh green beans. Back home we called them "string beans." My mother canned string beans and other garden crops, and Mrs. Shady also does canning. Yessum, green beans and potatoes are two of my favorite foods.

It was nice of you to make Scootie a cheeseburger. That's a coincidence because, earlier today, Mrs. Shady announced she is going to make us "mushroom swiss cheeseburgers" for dinner tomorrow. By the way, back home we never called the evening meal "dinner." We called it "supper." We never said "lunch." We called that meal "dinner." Ever hear of that configuration?

I wish you and Scootie a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Suzanne!

    4. When I first moved to Texas, it was confusing to keep the mealtimes in order. Our evening meal was always dinner, and the noon meal was lunch. I kind of go with the flow here, because dinner in Texas is at noon, then, supper is the evening meal. But at my house, I still say lunch and dinner! And, when Scootie was a tot, he and I would have coffee breaks at my house when he was here for the weekend or longer (I still do). Happy weekend, Shady!

    5. Thanks for the extra info, Suzanne. I'm surprised that mealtimes in Texas have the same names as in Pennsylvania. I haven't lived in PA since 1984, and it's possible that the designations have changed up there in the decades since I left. We also never said the word "brunch." I think the first time I ever heard that word was when I went away to college.

I'm a black coffee lover and take frequent coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon. Drinking it nonstop is more accurate :)

Thanks for continuing our thread, dear friend Suzanne. I love to learn and your comments always help in that regard. Enjoy your weekend!

  5. I love those cartoons which don't come on TV as much as the legendary Bugs and the gang. The Everly Bros were so good but that early recording doesn't jive with the hip song. that's ok because they are great to watch and listen to. I never heard of Sad Movies but it is a nice song and she has a sweet voice. Her voice and look, for some reason, remind me of the Patty Duke Show. I think because it is teen related. I do cry if a movie is sad but I have also cried at a good commercial. It is dreary and no snow in my part of the world. It is warmer than it should be..4C and I miss the cold weather and the snow. I wonder what the rodent will tell us about winter on Feb. 2nd.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks so much for hustling over on day one to bust your brain on my Trivia Question, dear friend!

Since you didn't state whether or not you remember Mr. Jinks, I am tempted to make you wear the dreaded Shady's Place Dunce Cap, but since you're such a supportive friend, I will look the other way. :)

Country singer Sue Thompson had three major crossover pop hits beginning with the one I posted, "Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)," a song that was covered by the Lennon Sisters and other artists. Sue followed that top 5 hit with one that made the top 3 - "Norman." Sue reached the top 20 with a third novelty ditty - "James (Hold the Ladder Steady)." Yessum, it is a common theme in teen pop for another boy or girl to steal your steady date. Both songs in this post have that story line. Another that comes to mind is "Lipstick On Your Collar" by Connie Francis in which the setting is also a movie theater.

I hope for all our sakes that winter is not quite over yet. I like to feel that invigorating cold air for a couple of months a year. With global warming taking hold it wouldn't surprise me if the Whistle Pig declares an early end to winter on Feb. 2.

Thanks again for coming, dear friend BB, and have a nice weekend!

  6. I don't particularly think of the Everly Brothers as guitar gods, but they are on at least that song.

Those Hanna-Barbara late 1950s-early '60s TV cartoons (as opposed to their earlier Tom and Jerry work for MGM) had crummy animation, but at least they were funny as hell. This is because when Bill Hanna and Joe Barbara went into television, they raided the Warner Brothers animation department for writers. Basically, their cartoons were a poor man's Loony Tunes.

He's not as well-known as Mel Blanc, but Daws Butler is easily Mel Blanc's equal when it comes to cartoon voice work. In fact, Butler once substituted for Blanc as the voice of Barney Rubble on several episodes of The Flinstones while Blanc recuperated from a car accident.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for dropping by to bust your brain on my Trivia Question, good buddy!

I'm glad you liked that custom sync video marrying edited studio sound to old footage of Phil & Don performing their late 50s hit "Bird Dog," a song not to be confused with "Hound Dog" (Big Mama/Elvis) "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window" (Patti Page), "Shaggy Dog" (Mickey Lee Lane), "Walkin' The Dog" (Rufus Thomas/Johnny Rivers, "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog" (Norma Tanega) or "Who Let the Dogs Out" (Baha Men).

I knew you'd have fax galore to add to the discussion about HB and animators and voice actors who breathed life into cartoon characters of the 50s and 60s. Thanks for your contributions. You're right. The situations, dialogue and voices were so well done on those HB cartoon series that I never minded and probably never noticed that the animation was less than state of the art. Thanks for the tidbit about Daws subbing for Mel as the voice of Barney Rubble. Now that I have your attention, I gotta know who you think is hotter: Wilma or Betty?

Thanks again for swinging by, good buddy Kirk, and have a great weekend!

  7. Hello friend Shady! You certainly bring me back to my youth with these guys. I do remember watching Huckleberry Hound. Those were the good cartoons, not like the ones they have now. This is not one of my particular favorites of the Everly Brothers and I have not heard the song by Sue Thompson before. Fun to go down memory lane with you. Thanks and have a spectacular week buddy.

    1. Hi, Janet!

Welcome back over, dear friend! I'm glad you decided to take the challenge and bust your brain on my Trivia Question.

I'm excited that you watched Huckleberry Hound back in your early years and remember the antics of Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks. I enjoyed the semi-sophisticated humor revealed in cartoon characters like Huck Hound, Yogi Bear, "Kweeks-draw" McGraw, Bugs Bunny, Roadrunner and others.

I hope you enjoyed hearing the country-pop ditty by Sue Thompson for the first time. Sue is well on her way to becoming a centenarian!

Thank you again for strolling down memory lane with me, dear friend Janet. Please hug Benny for me and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  8. Hi Shady! I feel like it's been ages since I've been in blogland. I know I read your previous post and wrote a comment but don't see it. You know how much I enjoy the posts about the Dell so I don't know what happened there. However, this post was a fun rerun for me. I was just at the perfect cartoon watching age when all those mentioned were on TV. Back in the day most homes only had one TV and we were the same. 6 kids meant a challenge as to what we watched at times. But of course those were classics as are the songs featured. I remember The Everly Brothers and I even remembered the words as it played here! Sue Thompson and her song I don't remember at all but it was fun to listen to it tonight. I'm going to blog a bit myself tonight as it's been a week of helping Jack get back on his feet and keeping the home fires burning...literally as we heat with wood! I hope you have a wonderful week Shady!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks for coming over, dear friend! When you didn't leave a comment on last week's post I was worried that you were preoccupied because Jack suffered another setback. I am relieved to know that isn't the case and that he continues on the mend. Sorry your comment on that post disappeared. Occasionally other friends report the same thing happening to them. There's no telling when the Blogger gremlins will strike.

I'm pleased to know you had fun with this post and that you watched the same bunch of cartoons that I did. The humor in them was sophisticated enough that they amused me well into my teenage years. Yessum, most households back then only had one TV, and there were often disputes over what to watch. It was the same with the telephone, and being on a party line drove us batty.

I'm surprised few of my reader friends remember this big hit by Sue Thompson. I'm pretty sure "Sad Movies" is her best known song.

If I don't stop by The Pines this evening it's because I start to fade around this time of the evening and get too sleepy to write good comments. I promise to come over first thing tomorrow for your update. I pray that all is well on the home front.

Thanks again for your visit and sweet comments, dear friend YaYa. Take care of yourself, Jack and my buddy Arnie and have a great week!

  9. Hi dear friend!

This entry made me smile because I loved watching these old cartoons growing up. Pixie, Dixie, and Jinx were my favourites. Ah, back when Boomerang used to show all of this; sometimes I can still catch them. :)

I wasn't familiar with these two songs, but I enjoyed listening to them. They uplifted my spirits. :) I'll have to ask dad if he ever heard this Everly Brothers song, he most likely has.

Have a great evening, dear friend!

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for joining the fun, dear friend!

Ever since I got the idea for this post and did additional research, I have been realizing how many animated series I watched and enjoyed in my boyhood and early teens. I always favored live action programs, but now I realize that I enjoyed dozens of cartoons as well. I'm happy that the post triggered your memories of watching Pixie & Dixie and other cartoons. Now I am thinking of another very old series called Felix the Cat which began airing in 1953. I watched it all the time. Notice how often a cat is used as a cartoon character - Sylvester, Tom (of Tom & Jerry) Jinks, Felix, Garfield, etc.

Yessum, I'll bet your dad knows "Bird Dog." It's one of the Everlys' best known hits. Ask him.

Thanks again for coming by and have a wonderful week, dear friend JM!
