Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes

ALTERNATE TITLE:

For Dating My Teenage Daughter
for the next phase of my blogging career.

QUADRUPLE DOUBLE COLD OPEN:

"Bermuda" - Linda Scott
(Feb./Mar. 1962, highest chart pos. #16 Easy Listening,
#70 Hot 100/#78 Cash Box)

"Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes"
Jimmy Buffett (2016 live perf.)

Kicking off my "comeback special," that was the late, great Jimmy Buffett,
pioneer of the Gulf & Western music genre aka The Key West Sound,
with "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes." Released in
1977, the ditty was a hit on the Pop, Easy Listening
and Country charts in the U.S. and in Canada.

Before that, you heard Linda Sampson of Queens, NY, better known as
Linda Scott, do her version of "Bermuda." Released at the start of 1962,
Linda's single was a cover of a top 10 hit from exactly ten years earlier,
February, 1952, a song written by 16 year old Cynthia Strother and
recorded by Cynthia and her 11 year old sister Kay, an act billed
as The Bell Sisters. Linda Scott's cover made the top 20 on
the Adult Contemporary chart, while another cover by
Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, released
around the same time, failed to chart.

Greetings and salutations!
I am The Geator With The Heater Shady Del Knight...
finally back from my prolonged hiatus. Yessum, five
whole months have passed since my last post.

"April Come She Will" - Simon & Garfunkel
acoustic cover by Boyce Avenue (Aug. 2023)

That was Alejandro Manzano, lead singer and acoustic guitarist
for the Sarasota, Florida-based band Boyce Avenue, with a fine
cover of "April Come She Will," the hit Simon And Garfunkel
song featured in the 1967 Dustin Hoffman film The Graduate.

To get you back up to speed... in case you
blotted it out of your mind forever
eagerly erased it from your memory
just plain forgot... I needed to break away from the blogging
community for a prolonged period of time while Mrs. Shady
and I moved far away from Florida, the place we had called
home since the 1980s. Exiting Florida was a bittersweet
experience because we needed to leave behind
several of Mrs. Shady's family members.

Here we stand, worlds apart,
hearts broken in two, two, two...

"Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" - Journey
cover by Zero Hour (Mar. 2023)

That was the great sound of Zero Hour, a brand new cover band
from Akron, Ohio, with their rendition of the 1983 Journey
hit "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)."

So, to get back to my story, I am now coming to you from my
new home "way up north" as the Johnny Horton song goes.
Further clues to help you pinpoint my exact location
can be found in the lyrics to that 1960 hit:

Way up North (North to Alaska)
Way up North (North to Alaska)
North to Alaska, we go North, the rush is on
North to Alaska, we go North, the rush is on

Big Sam left Seattle in the year of '92
With George Pratt, his partner, and brother Billy too
They crossed the Yukon River and found the Bonanza gold
Below that old white mountain, just a little South-East of Nome

Yessum... the autumn winds blow chilly and cold... but I was
thrilled to see colored leaves for the first time since 1983... and
I'm looking forward to building a snowman in the months ahead.
I am delighted to have a new wife life but, along with this new
life, I have new and greater responsibilities, making it necessary
for me to adjust my priorities. To be frank (as opposed to Tom),
I cannot and will not be spending as much time blogging.

With that in mind, I now present...
 simple rules
for the next phase of my blogging career.

RULE #1

From now on, I will be operating on a significantly reduced blogging schedule.
I will continue to publish new posts, but only once a month, not every five
to seven days as I have been doing for more than 15 years. Yessum, it's
drastic cutback, but the alternative would be for me to quit blogging
entirely. Many times in recent years I have considered doing just that,
because I am getting tired of having to deal with persistent technical
problems on Blogger and Wordpress, and the YouTube Secret Police
who apparently get their jollies routinely deleting music videos on
grounds of copyright infringement, the latter making it especially
difficult and frustrating for someone who operates a music blog.

RULE #2

As I have always done in the past, I will continue to reply to comments
submitted by loyal friends and reciprocate by visiting their sites, reading
their posts and leaving thoughtful comments. However, given my
added responsibilities and time limitations, my visits to other
sites will be necessarily less frequent and my comments
brief.  It's either that or quit blogging entirely.

RULE #3

Here is another major change. Whenever I publish a new post,
I will remain on "active status" that day plus two additional days -
three days in all.  At the end of that three day period, I will revert
to "inactive status" and go off the grid until I resurface with my
next post. It means I will not be present on the blog circuit to
reply to late comments on my posts or to visit other blogs and
read and comment on new posts friends publish in the interim.
That's all I am able and willing to do from now on. It's either
that or quit blogging entirely.

RULE #4

The principle, the rule of thumb from now on, is that if you show up for me,
I will show up for you. One worthwhile comment from you on my site will
result in a reply from me, plus one reciprocal visit to your site and one
worthwhile comment.  For 15 years, I avoided this "tit for tat" style
of blogging - trading comments, one for one - but my new
circumstances dictate that this is how it needs to be.
It's either that or quit blogging entirely.

RULE #5

To my dismay, I have discovered that some of my posts don't find
their way into wide circulation on blog reading lists, meaning
you might not be aware of them when they are published.
You will need to check to see if I have a new post running.
If we miss each other one month, we can catch up the next.

RULE #6

My new reduced blogging schedule means that I might be skipping
some of my annual birthday tributes. V.I.P. death date observances,
Mother's Day, Father's Day and traditional holiday features.
So be it. If I miss a holiday or tribute post one year, I'll
try to work it into the schedule the following year.
It's not the way I wanted it to be, but it is all I
am able to do going forward. Say it with me:
It's either that or quit blogging entirely.

RULE #7

It was a tough decision for me to adjust to the new normal and downshift
to a diminished presence on the blog circuit. Looking on the bright side,
it's not the end of the world. I will be here enough of the time so that
we can touch base, catch up and maintain our friendship. That is
especially true if you and I are already corresponding by email.
If you and I have not yet established an email connection and
you wish to break the fourth wall and do so, let me know.

RULE #8
So now, as I begin this new chapter of my so-called blogging career,
I would like to reiterate what to me is the most important rule of all,
a common sense principle that has guided me throughout my years
as a blogger. I laid it out in my first post in the summer of 2008:

"Admission is free, but visitors are asked
to bring along three things: a youthful spirit,
a respectful attitude and a sense of humor."

So let's get back to enjoying each other's company, singing, dancing,
laughing and having fun. That's what teenagers did at the Shady Dell in
the 20th century and the way I want it to be at Shady's Place in the 21st.

Don't touch that dial
Leave it on this station
Shady's gonna make
a special dedication
Oh yeah, oh yeah!

 This one goes out to
Falcor
dedicated from
Annabelle,
 to
Pat
dedicated from
Benny,
and to
Harley
dedicated from blog mascot
Toto Moto!

"The Dedication Song" - Freddy Cannon
(Feb./Mar. 1966, highest chart pos. #41 Hot 100/#50 Cash Box,
perf. on Sept. 24, 1966, ep. of The Clay Cole Show, NYC)

Thanks for reading my...
 8
sinful

simple rules
for the next phase of my blogging career.

This was merely an announcement to let you know
what to expect.  It does not count as my November post.
That's coming soon and I'll see you then.

"Oh That's Good, No That's Bad" - Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs
(Mar./Apr. 1967, highest chart pos. #50 Cash Box/#54 Hot 100/#52 Canada)

Have a Shady day, and remember the Shady's Place motto:
"Never grow up, never grow old."

Oh yesterday's over my shoulder
So I can't look back for too long
There's just too much to see waiting in front of me
And I know that I just can't go wrong

With these changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes
Nothing remains quite the same
With all of my running and all of my cunning
If I couldn't laugh I just would go insane

Plan B (Soft) - Volume 2: The Case of Ruby...
The Carnival Girl Who Took Her Love to Town!

 "Batholomew" - The Silent Comedy
(from 2010 album Common Faults, theme
from season 1 of TV series Goliath

 THE CASE OF RUBY...
 THE CARNIVAL GIRL WHO
 TOOK HER LOVE TO TOWN!

 "Ruby Baby' - Dion
(Feb/Mar. 1963, highest chart pos. #2 Hot 100/#3 Cash Box)

Our client's name is Ruby.

Ruby is a "carny"...
a carnival worker.
She operates a very
successful kissing booth.
In the trade it's called
a "smooch booth."

Ruby is a good kid...
a nice girl. She means well.
Ruby was my mother's name.
Our client stands accused of
pitting brother against brother
in a tug-of-war to win her
hand and other body parts.

I'm Jimmy Berluti...
an associate at the Boston
law firm of Donnell, Young,
Dole & Frutt on the hit
TV series The Practice.

They call me Jimmy the Grunt
because I'm strictly a working-class
stiff - no pretense, just a regular guy
practicing law, and I'm gonna keep
on practicing until I get it right.

I'm Patty
Solis-Papagian...
a DUI lawyer/real estate agent
who works with Santa Monica
attorney Billy McBride (who
bears a striking resemblance
to Billy Bob Thornton) on the
hit television series Goliath.

And I'm
Kim Wexler...
a lawyer who previously worked
at successful law firm based
in Albuquerque. Currently,
I'm sharing office space with
"Slippin' Jimmy" McGill aka
Saul Goodman, a small-time
lawyer on the hit TV series
Better Call Saul, a spin-
off of Breaking Bad.

We welcome you to
Plan B (Soft)...
a very different kind of radio show
coming to you exclusively here on
S-P-M-M, the number one station
for crimes and investigation. On
every show I, along with my law
partners, bring you in on actual
court cases and reveal our secret
strategy as we defend clients
and help them beat the rap.

As experienced lawyers, Patty,
Kim and I make a formidable
dream team. We lay down the
law, mount a rigorous defense.
Remember our slogan: "Your
problems will be little 'cause
we always win acquittal."
Now,  I can hear some of
you asking, "What exactly do
you mean by Plan B (Soft)?"
"Plan B" is where we create
reasonable doubt in the minds
of the jurors that our client is
guilty. We do that by pointing
the finger at somebody else
and suggesting that they
did the crime.

Kim, Patty and I intend to prove beyond a reasonable
doubt, in fact, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there
is no better radio show anywhere than the one we
are hosting on S-P-M-M. As you will see & hear,
the evidence is overwhelming and irrefutable.

Now back to our case.
Right off the bat, I ask
you not to hate our
client simply because
she's beautiful. Listen
closely to her story
and give her a fair trial.

In a nutshell (and in a taxi
cab)... Ruby came to me
and revealed that she
is charged with first
degree "HB&E" - heart-
breaking and entering
(into promiscuity).

Don't judge on the basis of looks alone. Make no mistake, ladies
and gentlemen of the jury. Ruby is not a floozy. She is not a hussy.

She is wholesome, prim and proper, a nice, down to earth
girl from a good family, raised right by her mama.

The evidence will show that Ruby and
her family lived in the country and
were dirt poor. That being the case,
Ruby was miserable, always longing
for something better and looking for
a chance to break free of her hard life.

The fact of the matter is that Ruby's morals were corrupted the night
she took a walk before dark to a swingin' place called Kennywood Park.

 "Kennywood Park" Freddy Cannon
 (1986 rerecording of "Palisades Park")

From the moment Ruby got a
taste of fun and excitement at
that amusement park, her life
became a roller-coaster ride.
She made up her mind once
and for all to pull up stakes
and put her bleak life in
the boondocks behind her.

 "Goodbye cruel world!" Ruby cried.
"I'm off to join the circus!" or...
in Ruby's case... the carnival.

"Goodbye Cruel World" - James Darren
 (Nov./Dec. 1961, highest chart pos. #2 Cash Box/#3 Hot 100

Ruby packed her bags
and bade farewell to her
high school sweetheart.
He said "Goodbye, Ruby"
on a Tuesday. (See what
I did there?) She threw
caution to the wind...
rolled the dice and
gave the wheel of
fortune a spin.

THE VIDEO NOW!

In short... Ruby took her love
to town and never looked back.

"Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town"
 - Kenny Rogers And The First Edition
(July/Aug. 1969, highest chart pos. #6 Hot 100/#7 Cash Box

Ruby took to her new life with the carnival like a fish to water.

Before long she had found not one
but two new boyfriends, and they
turned out to be brothers. One
brother was the tilt-a-whirl
guy, and the other ran
the bumper car track.

It was only a matter of time before a lovers' triangle
developed and someone got hurt.

Objection, your honor! Badgering! The prosecution's claim
that my client regards men as playthings, as nothing
more than toys, lacks foundation and is prejudicial.

I also move to strike! Counsel's
assertion that our client is afraid
to take the witness stand in her
own defense calls for spec-
ulation and is without merit.

THE VIDEO NOW!

Ruby wants the truth to come out.
She has stated on numerous
occasions, both publicly and
privately: "I Wanna Testify!"

"I Wanna Testify" - The Parliaments
 (Aug./Sept. 1967, highest chart pos. #3 R&B,
 #18 Cash Box/#20 Hot 100)

Ladies and gentlemen, I totally concur
with what my distinguished colleague
Miss Wexler just told you. I assure you
that our client is eager to clear her name.

Ruby takes her sworn oath to tell
the truth and nothing but the truth
very seriously. In our pretrial prep
sessions she has repeated over and
over again-- "Ain't Gonna Lie."

 "Ain't Gonna Lie" - Keith
 (Oct./Nov. 1966, highest chart pos.
 #31 Cash Box/#39 Hot 100

In the end, Ruby negotiated a deal on her own behalf
whereby she meets behind closed doors with the judge
in his chambers every Saturday night for a year.

Citing Ruby's very good behavior, the judge released
her on her own recognizance.

The Case of Ruby...
The Carnival Girl Who
Took Her Love to Town

was a media circus, but the trial
is over and the case is closed.
Thanks for being here. Stay
tuned on the other side of
news for that nifty missy
 of the fabulous Fifties
Joyce Martin who will
be here with the latest
edition of her show
 Joyce Martin's
a Gold Digger...

Joyce is a good kid...a nice girl.... she means well. Joyce was my mother's name.

And stick around because we'll be back soon with another true
crime story ripped from our case files. Till then remember this.
If you're in an accident, Better Call Saul or Billy McBride.

CLICK TO START THE VIDEO NOW!

But if you need a music fix and need it real bad, call our lawfirm. Remember
too that suspicion equals reasonable doubt, and that's what Plan B (Soft) is
all about. Now for my partners Kim Wexler and Patty Solis-Papagian this is
Jimmy Berluti reminding you to treat your mama real nice. See you next time!

2022 - Year of the Dell Rat, Part 1:
Crazy Little Thing Called Love!

CAN SHADY DEL KNIGHT KEEP YOU
 ENTERTAINED IN THE COMING YEAR?

 DOES
 CHRIS GRIFFIN
 REACT POORLY
 TO BAD NEWS?

 WELCOME BACK, DEAR FRIEND!
 AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I'm delighted to have you along for the ride
as I begin another year of blogging here
at Shady's Place Music & Memories.
This year I am excited to launch eight
new S-P-M-M radio shows hosted by
engaging TV and radio personalities.
You met them all last year in sneak
previews, and they're back in this
special two-part post to help me
kick-off 2022. Today, in part one,
you will meet the first four new
members of The Shady Bunch,
so let's get right to it.

Lo & behold, two of your favorite Shady's Place regulars,
Brian and Chris Griffin from Family Guy, are back,
along with my first special guest, their sister Meg.

Meg was overjoyed when I slipped her a note in class
and invited her to join The Shady Bunch DJ team.

Santa was good to Meg this year, and my job offer was the icing on the cake.

Meg's social media accounts blew-up when word spread that she
had been chosen to become the latest celeb radio personality on SPMM.

Without further ado, please
join me in welcoming this
delightful young woman
back to Shady's Place.
Ladies and gentlemen -
Meg Griffin!

Thank you very much, Shady,
and happy new year, everyone!

I am beyond excited that Shady picked
me to host my very own radio show.
I've decided to call it Meg Griffin's
Frantic Romantic. I'll be playing the
greatest love songs of your lifetime
including somebody done somebody
wrong songs and wistful ditties like
this one by ABBA. Goodbye '21,
hello '22 and-- "Happy New Year!"

"Happy New Year" - ABBA
(from Nov. 1980 album Super Trouper)

That was the Swede sound of ABBA
and "Happy New Year," featuring
"Aggie" (Agnetha Fältskog) on
lead vocal. Penned & produced
by Benny and Björn, the song
was released in the fall of 1980
on ABBA's Super Trouper album.

It's time for me to hand over the mic
to another new Shady Bunch deejay.
Before I go, I'd like  to invite you to
join me later this year for my show
Meg Griffin's Frantic Romantic
 here on S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio

Now welcome back America's sweetheart.
You know her as Adrian Monk's smart,
savvy and sometimes sassy assistant,
and she's also my great new friend--
Natalie Teeger!

Thank you so much, Meg, and happy new year
to one and all! My new show on S-P-M-M is
called Natalie Teeger's Array of Sunshine.
As the name suggests, I will be bringing
my sunny disposition to the airwaves and
brightening your day with the groovy sounds
of sunshine pop and light rock. For example,
did you know that The Critters derived their
name from The Animals? As the summer of
'66 was getting underway, these Jersey boys
landed their first single on the chart with a
version of a song written by John Sebastian.

Here are The Critters with a record that brushed the top 20
on Cash Box and got them noticed-- "Younger Girl."

"Younger Girl" - The Critters
(June/July 1966, highest chart pos. #21 Cash Box/#42 Hot 100)

You just heard "Younger Girl," the first single by The Critters,
one that revealed their hit potential as sunshine poppers.
Oddly, while the platter performed well on Cash Box,
it failed to reach the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Later that year the group followed-up with "Mr. Dieingly Sad"
which cracked the top 20 on Billboard and top 15 on Cash Box.

That's all I have for now. Please join me
this year for the official debut of my show
Natalie Teeger's Array of Sunshine
on S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio!

Now here's one of the charismatic stars of the
Netflix science fiction drama Sense8. She's the
San Francisco-based trans woman hacktivist
and blogger you first met at Riley's Raves
on the old blog, SDMM, and she's back
this year with her own radio show.
Please welcome-- Nomi Marks!

Thank you, Natalie... and happy 2022 to all my
friends and followers out there in S-P-M-M land!
Just a friendly reminder -- whatever you do,
don't call me Michael. I am delighted that
Shady Del Knight has given me this
amazing opportunity to co-host a radio
show along with my BFF Nia Nal from
Supergirl. Our show, Transitive Verve,
celebrates diversity in music, a mix
of styles by artists old and new...
everything from 80s new wave
to modern pop and rock.

On our show, you'll meet exciting young entertainers from around the
world, like up-and-coming Romanian stars Andrei Cerbu and Beatrice
Florea. Here they are with-- "Crazy Little Thing Called Love!"

"Crazy Little Thing Called Love" - Queen cover
by Andrei Cerbu & Beatrice Florea (Sept. 2019)

Hi, I'm Nomi's radio co-host Nia Nal,
and that was the fabulous Romanian
duo of guitarist Andrei Cerbu and
 singer Beatrice Florea covering
Queen in fine fashion doing the
Freddy Mercury song "Crazy
Little Thing Called Love." As
that exciting performance
illustrates, people of all kinds
across America and around
the world share a bond. We
have something in common -
this thing called love, a love
of good music. With that in mind,
I invite you to join Nomi and me
for Transitive Verve, making its
official debut this year on S-P-M-M.

Now it gives me great pleasure to introduce Shady's last special guest of the day,
WMEX Boston top 40 radio legend Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsburgback from
Beantown to start moonlighting as a Shady Bunch personality
this year on S-P-M-M. Take it away, Arnie!

Thank you, Nia Nal, and happy new year
to all my top 40 teens in the listening audience.
Your friend The Woo Woo is here for you-you,
Old Aching Adenoids, Arnie Ginsburg, back
on the air to bring you another sampling of
my famous Night Train Show coming to
you in '22 on S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio.
I'll be spinning the great sounds of doo-
wop, pop and rock & roll, records that
were hot in New England and across
the USA in the pre-Beatles years,
the late 50s through early 60s.

Here's one now, ripped from the Wimmex Tunedex. It's Beantown's
own Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon taking us along for a day
of fun and teen romance down at-- "Palisades Park!"

"Palisades Park" - Freddy Cannon
(June 1962, highest chart pos. #3 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

Penned by Gong Show host Chuck Barris and
sung by Freddy Cannon, that was a rock & roll
tribute to New Jersey's Palisades Amusement
Park. Can you believe that great song was the
designated B side of a single? What were the
guys in suits thinking? When a deejay played
the song by mistake, it took off and went
top 3 in the spring of 1962, becoming
the biggest hit of Freddy's career.

Gee, that does it for Part 1 of our new year
spectacular. Stay tuned for Part 2 coming up
next Wednesday, the 5th of January, when
you'll meet four more new members of
The Shady Bunch deejay staff.

Natalie Teeger and me, Arnie Ginsburg, coming your way throughout

are talkin'...we're rockin'! As Ernie Fields plays us off with
