Salivating 74 Years of Service to the Blog World!

Hiya, I'm Brian Griffin!

As you recall, I'm a professional martooni taste tester.
(Lishen, I'm not as drunk as some thinkle peep I am.)
I am also the personable pooch from Family Guy
and a member of the DJ team on S-P-M-M
Retrosonic Radio here at Shady's Place.

Sorry about the typo in the title
of the post.  It should read 174
14 YEARS.
That's right!  This week,
Shady is observing his
14th blogiversary!

That figure includes 10 years as emcee of the old blog,
Shady Dell Music & Memories, and 4 years as the so-
called brains behind Shady's Place Music & Memories.

I shay this calls for a shalivation... and the gang's all here.
Well, some of them are here, because we only have time
for the traditional seven song salute. Without further
delay, let's start from scratch and get to the music
because I'm itchin' to dance with your leg.

If you're a fan of my show Eclectic Avenue, then you know I love variety
(and Jerky Treats).  The original by Smokey Robinson And The Miracles
is still the greatest, but wait till you hear what I found, a cool rerecorded
version of Smokey's "More Love" released in the summer of 2015!

A Doctor Donald D. Rosey good morning to you,
and happy 14 to Shady Del Knight! The Doctor's
in the house! I'm Dr. Don Rose, top 40 DJ at
"Quixie in Dixie," on loan to S-P-M-M here at
Shady's Place. I dropped by on this special day
to spin the kind of record you're likely to hear
on my Rose-Colored Glasses show, sounds
of the 60s that are good for what ails ya. In
1966, The Left Banke found fame thanks to
their top 5 hit "Walk Away Renee." In 1968
Motown's Four Tops covered the song and
scored a hit of their own, a record that
finished in the top 10 on Cash Box.

 Hepcat Black's my name.
 Hep music's my game.

I'm a cool cool kitty, but let's get one thing straight
between us, Gus. I ain't from New York City!
On my S-P-M-M radio show Pink Cadillac
I play old school rock 'n' roll, R&R revival,
rockabilly, psychobilly, country, outlaw -
it's all good, understood

First off, happy 14 year blogiversary, Shady D! Now let's rock this

aplenty to my good friend Shady Del Knight on
his 14 years of blogging. Way to go, man!

On Natural Hy, I play groovy greats of the 60s
and 70s with some 50s doo-wop occasionally
added to the mix. The epicenter of my show
is Philadelphia from the mid 60s through the
mid 70s, the sweet soul, psychedelic soul and
blue-eyed soul sounds that the kids danced to
in the studio on The Hy Lit Television Show.

Hey, Vern! How's life been treatin' ya?
This here's yer old buddy, yer old pal
Ernest P. Worrell.

Ain't none of my beeswax, Vern, but looks like you got
somethin' caught in yer teeth there. Looks like Popeye
ain't the only one who's been eatin' his spinach!

Hey, Vern, guess what. Today Shady
Del Knight is celebrating the big 1-4.
No, he's not 14 years old, even tho
it sure seems like it sometimes.
I mean that he's been sharin' his
music and memories with us for
14 years on two different blogs.
He deserves a great big attaboy.

Just a reminder, Vern. On my S-P-M-M show Rock-A-Billygoat, I spin
the best of rockabilly, early rock & roll, rock & roll revival, traditional
country & western and country-pop crossover. Now hold onto
yer hat, Vern, 'cause I got a dilly for you right cheer.
This boy and his band played everything from
rock & roll to R&B, folk, country, pop
and even psychedelic rock.

Flashing back to late '68 and early '69, that was the late great Kenny Rogers
and his group The First Edition appearing on The Smothers Brothers

Hope you enjoyed this

"Let Your Love Flow" - The Bellamy Brothers
(Mar./Apr. 1976, highest chart pos. #1 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

From West Central Florida, USA, Shady Del Knight's neck of the woods,
those were The Bellamy Brothers, David and Homer, kickin' off their
shoes and kickin' off today's show with the biggest hit of their
career, "Let Your Love Flow," a country crossover
chart-topper in the spring of '76.

Howdy, Vern! This here's your
old buddy Ernest P. Worrell.
Like a bad penny, I done turned up
again here at Shady's Place.

Hey, Vern... gotta ask - is that a
Nutty Buddy in your pocket...
or are ya just happy to see me?
Hey, I got a dilly for ya, Vern...
Ever hear the one about the farmer's
daughter and the Roto-Rooter man?

Know somethin' Vern, life's full
of tough decisions, like which
drink'll hit the spot when
you're all hot and sweaty
 and wanna wet your whistle.
If you said PBR, then you're
my kinda guy and I'll save
you a stool down at Kenny's.
If you said sparklin' water...
you ain't from around here.

But when it comes to pickin'
a sodie pop to sip when I'm
hangin' on a ladder watchin'
you shingle your roof...
it's old Yeller for me.

That's right, Vern. Meller Yeller sure does hit the spot.
It quenches your thirst and brings out the
flavor of your chewin' tobacca.

Guess what, Vern? While I'm busy sippin and
supervisin', I thought you and me could listen to
another stack of grade A tunes. Sound like a plan?

Okay, Vern, my next platter's on the turntable so get ready
to tap your toes and whistle while you work, good buddy!

This is my third show on S-P-M-M
spinnin' the best of early rock & roll,
rock & roll revival, rockabilly, hill-
billy, traditional country, new country,
crossover country, you get the drift.
Seein' as how we're right smack dab
in the dead of winter, today's show
is a Solid Cold edition. Every
platter I'm playin' is served cold
with a cold open aka a cold intro.
Copy that, good buddy?

Ain't none of my beeswax, Vern...
but you look a little rough around
the edges this mornin'... like you
got tangled up with a junkyard dog.
What happened, Vern? Lemme guess.
Wifey caught you with stripper glitter
on your hands? Out all night and
runnin' wild... your woman sittin'
home with a month old child?
Well, I'll be ding, Roger Miller's
got just the thing, a ditty he wrote
just for you, Vern-- "Dang Me!"

"Dang Me" - Roger Miller
(June/July 1964, #1 Country/#7 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

That was bad boy Roger the Dodger
Miller with "Dang Me," a hit novelty
number from the summer of 1964,
#1 on the Country chart. Just 'tween
you and me, Vern, I done my share
of midnight ramblin'... and so have
these red hot hepcats, Gene Vincent
And His Blue Caps. In early 1958,
they made a run at the top 20 with
a platter that's tailor made for a
high school hop. It's called--
"Dance To The Bop!"

"Dance To The Bop" - Gene Vincent And His Blue Caps
(Dec. 1957/Jan. 1958, highest chart pos. #8 R&B/#23 Hot 100,
#36 Cash Box), perf. on Nov. 17, 1957, ep. of The Ed Sullivan Show

Gene Vincent And His Blue Caps with "Dance To The Bop," their last single
to reach the chart in the U.S., a record that made the top 10 on the R&B chart.
If you're watching my simulcast on YouTube, you saw a rare video of Gene
and his group doin' that song on an episode of The Ed Sullivan Show.

If you're just tuning in, I'm your
old buddy and new best friend
Ernest P. Worrell... and we're
 Rockin'-A-Billygoat here on
S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio.
just a reminder, Vern, this is a
Solid Cold edition. Every song's
got a cold open. Up next, I'd like
you to meet a one hit wonder -
a little lady from Virginie who
was dubbed The Female Elvis
Presley. Janis Martin's here
to ask the musical question
-- "Will You Willuum?"

"Will You Willyum" - Janis Martin
(May 1956, highest chart pos. #35 Billboard's Coming Up Strong)

Landing a spot on Billboard's specialty
chart Coming Up Strong in the spring
of 1956, that was rockin' little mama
Janis Martin sounding like Elvis the
Pelvis and, if you ask me, sounding
even more like rockabilly queen
Wanda Jackson.

This Arkansas boy scored 42 hits on the
Country chart in the 70s and 80s. Let's
turn back the clock to his early years
when he was waxin' right good rock-
abilly records but not making much
noise on the chart. It's Narvel Felts
coverin' The Drifters' "Honey Love!"

"Honey Love" - Narvel Felts
(Feb. 1960, highest chart pos. #60 Hot 100)

From early 1960, That was rockabilly singer & guitarist Narvel Felts
doin' his version of "Honey Love," a #1 charting R&B hit for
Clyde McPhatter and The Drifters in 1954. I think young
Narvel sounds a heck of a lot like Clyde on that one.

Ernest P. Worrel of The Shady Bunch
deejay posse keeping you company
on the squawk box, and here's the
crossover country single that was
topping the national chart the day
President John F. Kennedy was
assassinated. It's the duo of
Dale And Grace singin' their
biggest hit and signature song
--"I'm Leavin' It Up To You!"

"I'm Leaving It Up To You" - Dale & Grace
(Oct./Nov. 1963, highest chart pos. #1 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

He's from Mississip and she's from down in Loozeeana. Sweet harmony there
from bitter time in American history... the duo of Dale Houston and Grace
Broussard singing "I'm Leavin' It Up To You," the most popular song in
the U.S.A. the day the president died. By the way, that Dale & Grace
biggie is a cover of a song written and originally recorded in 1957
by the rock 'n' roll duo Don And Dewey.

Hey, guess what, Vern?
I'm plumb outta time, dadgummit!

I need to scoot and skedaddle... but stay put. Coming up on
the flip side of Gary Owens' news, it's English rugby mum and
singing sensation Sarah Collins with another edition of her
series How Sarah Got Her Groove Back...  and I'll be
comin' round the moutain in two shakes of a jiffy
with another heapin' helpin' of toe tappin' tunes

hillbilly hayride and your heartland

pleasing platters-- "Fame And Fortune!"

"Fame And Fortune" - Johnny Earle And The Jordanaires

That was Brit boy Johnny Earle with The Jordanaires doing his best Presley
on "Fame And Fortune," a song from his 1997 album With Elvis In Mind.

This boy, Bobby Vee, hails from Fargo.
Bobby's career was born The Day the
Music Died. When Bobby's idol Buddy
Holly was killed in a plane crash on the
way to a gig in Minnesota, Bobby and
his band filled in at the show and the
crowd loved them. Bobby went on to

The Dirty Dozen Meets the Shady Bunch Half Dozen!

I'm Maj. John Reisman,

leader of a ragtag band of misfits I call
The Dirty Dozen - the most twisted,
anti-social bunch of psychopathic
deformities you'll ever run into!
I've got one religious maniac,
one malignant dwarf, two
near-idiots... and the rest
I don't even wanna think
about! That being said,
I can't think of a better
way to fight a war.
I'm here to tell you
about a different dozen.

Today Shady Del Knight is celebrating
a "dirty dozen" years of blogging.

For the first 10 years Shady was host
of Shady Dell Music & Memories.

Believe it or not, his "new" blog, Shady’s Place,
is now two years old...and crying for its binky.

To mark this special occasion, I decided to treat my men to a
little party, and I invited a few members of The Shady Bunch
deejay battalion over to play some tunes. Just a minute.

Got something to say, Franko?
Speak up so the whole class can hear what's on your mind.

I said I don't have to dance.

I know the rules.
Condemned men
don't have to dance.

And there's nothing you can do about it, mister.

Easy, Franko, don't get your knickers in a
twist, and don't jump the gun. This isn't
a done deal. First we need to make sure
these Shady Bunch deejays are willing
to re-up for another stint here on SPMM.
If they agree to come back for another
year, they'll be worked to death, and
there's not a beating they won't take.
I see they've all raised their hands.
In that case, Sgt. Bowren, will you
do the honors and proceed with
the roll call and sentencing?

THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES
WILL BE
CARRIED OUT
FORTHWITH!

BLUE, SHADY:
30 YEARS HARD LABOR

(as SPMM radio DJ)

30 years? I can do that time in my sleep! Hello everyone!
I’m happy to be returning for another year behind the microphone
hosting my S-P-M-M radio show Stuck Like Glue on Shady Blue.
As I have been doing since the summer of 2018, I'll be playing
great sounds of the pre-Beatles years, the 50s and early 60s,
and paying tribute to my favorite artist Elvis Presley.

BLACK, HEPCAT:
30 YEARS HARD LABOR

(as SPMM radio DJ)

Hi, ya'll! I’m Hepcat Black, a cool cool kitty who’s definitely
not from New York City. I’m glad to be back and that's a fact, Jack.
I just pulled up in my Pink Cadillac to spin a cool tune for ya.

The singing sweethearts I'm about to introduce are the cat's meow.
They look like the Butcher Babies and sound like Nancy Sinatra.
They're The Devil's Daughters, an Americana Rockabilly band
from Phoenix, Arizona - zingers Mysti Moon and Lisa Mortensen.

Take a goosey gander at the gals and I think you'll agree they look more like
the daughters of vintage pin-up model Bettie Page than the spawn of Satan.
Here's an original song they wrote with their producer, veteran guitarist
Danny B. Harvey, the barn burner "Pass That Bottle." In the video the
Double Ds are backed by "three badass boys of Rockabilly" - Leeroy
Nelson, Shorty Kruetz and Tommy Collins. Swinging to the beat
are members of the Arizona Lindy Hop Society!

top 10 hit for the Stray Cats rockabilly band in '82. Fast forward to present
day and dig this super-duper cover by the Romanian duo of Beatrice Florea
and Andrei Cerbu. They're gonna-- "Rock This Town!"

30 YEARS HARD LABOR

Hello, folks! Some people call me a "dawg" because I like all kinds
of women... Lois, in particular... but I also love all kinds of music.
That's why I am pleased as punch to return for another year
(or even 30) as host of Eclectic Avenue, the show that's like
a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.

Shucks, every once in a while, just for the fun of it, I might even

DELLETTE, DEBBIE:
30 YEARS HARD LABOR

(as The Hostess with the Mostest
on Top Hit Club of America)

Hi, guys! Who would have thought that a frat rock
and Beach Music group from South Carolina would
be hot at the Shady Dell in soul mecca York, PA?
It happened, not once, but twice, in 1966 when
The Swingin' Medallions gained Dell immortality
first with "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)"
and then with the follow-up single I'm about to
play entitled "She Drives Me Out Of My Mind."
Both Medallions hits were released on the sound-
track of Mondo Daytona, a 1968 psychotronic
music documentary film shot on Daytona Beach
and first released in Bradenton, Florida. Singer
Billy Joe Royal narrated the film and music acts
Grand Funk Railroad and The Tams appeared
along with The Swingin' Medallions.
