The Dirty Dozen Meets the Shady Bunch Half Dozen!

I'm Maj. John Reisman,

leader of a ragtag band of misfits I call
The Dirty Dozen - the most twisted,
anti-social bunch of psychopathic
deformities you'll ever run into!
I've got one religious maniac,
one malignant dwarf, two
near-idiots... and the rest
I don't even wanna think
about! That being said,
I can't think of a better
way to fight a war.
I'm here to tell you
about a different dozen.

Today Shady Del Knight is celebrating
a "dirty dozen" years of blogging.

For the first 10 years Shady was host
of Shady Dell Music & Memories.

Believe it or not, his "new" blog, Shady’s Place,
is now two years old...and crying for its binky.

To mark this special occasion, I decided to treat my men to a
little party, and I invited a few members of The Shady Bunch
deejay battalion over to play some tunes. Just a minute.

Got something to say, Franko?
Speak up so the whole class can hear what's on your mind.

I said I don't have to dance.

I know the rules.
Condemned men
don't have to dance.

And there's nothing you can do about it, mister.

Easy, Franko, don't get your knickers in a
twist, and don't jump the gun. This isn't
a done deal. First we need to make sure
these Shady Bunch deejays are willing
to re-up for another stint here on SPMM.
If they agree to come back for another
year, they'll be worked to death, and
there's not a beating they won't take.
I see they've all raised their hands.
In that case, Sgt. Bowren, will you
do the honors and proceed with
the roll call and sentencing?

THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES
WILL BE
CARRIED OUT
FORTHWITH!

BLUE, SHADY:
30 YEARS HARD LABOR

(as SPMM radio DJ)

30 years? I can do that time in my sleep! Hello everyone!
I’m happy to be returning for another year behind the microphone
hosting my S-P-M-M radio show Stuck Like Glue on Shady Blue.
As I have been doing since the summer of 2018, I'll be playing
great sounds of the pre-Beatles years, the 50s and early 60s,
and paying tribute to my favorite artist Elvis Presley.

Here's Elvis the Pelvis now along with Walter Matthau and

BLACK, HEPCAT:
30 YEARS HARD LABOR

(as SPMM radio DJ)

Hi, ya'll! I’m Hepcat Black, a cool cool kitty who’s definitely
not from New York City. I’m glad to be back and that's a fact, Jack.
I just pulled up in my Pink Cadillac to spin a cool tune for ya.

The singing sweethearts I'm about to introduce are the cat's meow.
They look like the Butcher Babies and sound like Nancy Sinatra.
They're The Devil's Daughters, an Americana Rockabilly band
from Phoenix, Arizona - zingers Mysti Moon and Lisa Mortensen.

Take a goosey gander at the gals and I think you'll agree they look more like
the daughters of vintage pin-up model Bettie Page than the spawn of Satan.
Here's an original song they wrote with their producer, veteran guitarist
Danny B. Harvey, the barn burner "Pass That Bottle." In the video the
Double Ds are backed by "three badass boys of Rockabilly" - Leeroy
Nelson, Shorty Kruetz and Tommy Collins. Swinging to the beat
are members of the Arizona Lindy Hop Society!

WORRELL, ERNEST P. :

Thanks a bunch for signing me up for a 30 year DJ gig, sarge.
Beats pumpin' gas at the Esso station or baggin' groceries

my beeswax,  but you got a little somethin' stuck
between your two front teeth. Gotta look your

No doubt Hepcat Black's a cool kitty, and the tune I'm about to play was a
top 10 hit for the Stray Cats rockabilly band in '82. Fast forward to present
day and dig this super-duper cover by the Romanian duo of Beatrice Florea
and Andrei Cerbu. They're gonna-- "Rock This Town!"

I'm gonna scoot and skedaddle

GREEN, SHADY:

Hi, gang! It's your pal on the radio Shady Green, The Dean of Keen.

GRIFFIN, BRIAN:
30 YEARS HARD LABOR

Hello, folks! Some people call me a "dawg" because I like all kinds
of women... Lois, in particular... but I also love all kinds of music.

Shucks, every once in a while, just for the fun of it, I might even
take the stage, strike up the band and sing a little song for you.

Now that you've been
rick-rolled, it's time for me

with the best mix of
music on the next edition
of Eclectic Avenue
right here on S-P-M-M.

DELLETTE, DEBBIE:
30 YEARS HARD LABOR

(as The Hostess with the Mostest
on Top Hit Club of America)

Hi, guys! Who would have thought that a frat rock
and Beach Music group from South Carolina would
be hot at the Shady Dell in soul mecca York, PA?
It happened, not once, but twice, in 1966 when
The Swingin' Medallions gained Dell immortality
first with "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)"
and then with the follow-up single I'm about to
play entitled "She Drives Me Out Of My Mind."
Both Medallions hits were released on the sound-
track of Mondo Daytona, a 1968 psychotronic
music documentary film shot on Daytona Beach
and first released in Bradenton, Florida. Singer
Billy Joe Royal narrated the film and music acts
Grand Funk Railroad and The Tams appeared
along with The Swingin' Medallions.

Very pretty, Colonel, very pretty...
...but, can they fight?

Looks like you changed your tune, Franko...
I saw you swingin' with the Medallions.

So it's final. They’re all coming back for another year - The Shady Bunch -
DJ squad of Shady Blue, Hepcat Black, Ernest P. Worrell, Brian Griffin,
Shady Green, Jerry Blavat “The Geator with the Heater”, Hy Lit,
The Good Girls (Cindy, Patti and Jane), Dr. Donald D. Rose,
Robert W. Morgan, Toto Moto and Dell Rat Tom plus
Debbie the Dellette hosting her series, and joining
them here at Shady's Place will be ten more DJs -

you entertained in the coming year!

I hope you enjoyed the 12 year anniversary party.
Stick around because year 13 gets underway
with Shady's next post six days from now.

Any more where Debbie the Dellette came from?
If so... then count me in, major!

  1. Tom,

Congrats on 12-years of blogging!! That's an accomplishment. June marked my 10th anniversary but I failed to do anything. Shame on me. You put together a mix of old and new songs, most of which I didn't know. The obvious ones I knew was Elvis singing "Trouble" and Brian covering "Never Gonna Give You Up'. Incidentally, I had no clue that pooch can sing. I'm impressed. The artist I was most pleasantly surprised by is Beatrice Florea. She does a great throw back sound. I most certainly want to check out more of her tracks. The Dirty Dozen is a great old film. I'm looking forward to another dozen or so years of having you in Blogosphere. You really have a knack for producing quality content that lots of fun, dear friend. Have a spectacular week!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thank you very much for coming to my party this morning, dear friend! Congratulations right back atcha for marking ten full years of blogging at CAAC.

I'm glad you enjoyed this mix of old and new mewsic brought to you by a half dozen returning DJs that you've been hearing for the last two years on SPMM Retrosonic Radio. Yessum, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane does the voice of Brian Griffin, and Seth is quite an accomplished singer. Wike sez Seth has "performed as a singer at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He has released five studio albums, in the same vein of his musical idol Frank Sinatra."

Romanians Beatrice Florea and Andrei Cerbu have formed a duo that is turning out one great American rock & roll cover after another. I will be bringing you more of their performances in upcoming posts. I'm delighted that you like them so much!

I'm also pleased that you have seen The Dirty Dozen. It's one of my favorite movies. Thank you again for being here today and for your generous compliments, dear friend Cathy. Have a super week!

  2. Congratulations on 12 years! Afraid I haven't yet mustered up the energy to do a lot of listening (Haven't listened to anything since Saturday), but I am on the upward curve and thank you for the invite! One coherent thought did form- agreed on that Betty Page look. Did you know that they do (or did until COVID) a comic book where Betty is the star as a time hopping secret agent?

    1. Hi, Chris!

Thank you very much for honoring me with your presence, good buddy! I'm especially pleased that you came over even though you are still under the weather. I hope your pooch Misty along with my anniversary post helped lift your spirits this morning.

I'm glad you took a good close look at The Devil's Daughters. (I have taken a dirty dozen looks at them :) I wasn't aware that there is a Bettie Page comic book. I see that it was first published in 2017. I did a Google image search and found many eye-popping cover illustrations:

      https://www.google.com/search?q=bettie+page+comic+book&rlz=1C1SQJL_enUS889US889&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiKneel6tvqAhUNhOAKHWQDDJIQ_AUoAnoECAwQBA&biw=1920&bih=947

By the way, The Devil's Daughters sound an awful lot like Nancy Sinatra on a couple of their other recordings and even did a great version of "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" -

Thanks again for joining me for my blogiversary salivation, good buddy Chris. I hope you feel better and stronger by the hour. Take it easy, have a good week and I'll be over to see you on Friday!

  5. Dirty Dozen is right, Shady! Well...some down and dirty, but really great stuff overall! Happy 10 and 2 anniversary to blogging! This is a pretty great celebration with the cast of the "Dirty Dozen"...oh...and Brian! I've seen The Dirty Dozen 3 or 4 times, and each time brings me a little more understanding of what the heck is going on with this group! haha!

I just love Paul Revere and The Raiders! And, this video presents various sides of the group, so good. I miss them and their stage antics. "Kicks" is one great song-thanks for the comeback!

Those Stray Cats are so cool! I bet they can cover almost anything-this Rockabilly tune was excellent! She is so cute, and the band really does rock! I appreciate the hard work that went in to this production and the superb talent!

I'm going to have to scoot for now Shady, and come back in a while to finish! Grandma duty calls! See you later!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

Thank you very much for dropping in for my 12th blogiversary, dear friend! The salivation wouldn't be the same without having you here.

I'm thrilled that you have watched The Dirty Dozen three or four times and are therefore familiar with Reisman, Franko and the other characters in the film. I have seen The Dirty Dozen around a dozen times in my life, most of them since meeting Mrs. Shady who is a WWII buff and loves movies of this genre.

Isn't that an exciting custom video compiling different performances by the Raiders of their hit "Kicks"? I was happy to find it. At position #70, "Kicks" is the highest ranked PR&R song on Dell Rat Tom's list of The 200 Greatest Hits of the Shady Dell. Three other Raiders singles also made the Dell 200.

I am also happy that you singled out Beatrice & Andrei doing their zesty cover of that Stray Cats hit. The Romanian duo is catching on all over the world.

I hope you and Scootie are in good health and in good spirits. Thank you again for visiting and have a safe, healthy and happy week, dear friend Suzanne!

    2. Well, I made it back over! It's pretty hot, and there's always much to do! The Devil's Daughters are funny and pretty cool. I don't know that song, but it is a fun video. This is one great band too!

Haha! Brian cracks me up too! I remember "Never Gonna Give You Up", and I think I saw an episode of him singing this song! I haven't watched the show in a few years now, but sometimes Scootie has them on You Tube-he was surprised that I knew who the Family Guy people are!

You had to go and do it, Shady! My favorite Elvis movie is "King Creole"! I think that one really sold me on Elvis. When he jumps up on that bar and sings "If you're askin' for trouble"...well, the expressions on everyone's faces are priceless! And, THAT makes me smile!

Well, again, Happy Blogiversary to you and your cohorts, Shady! I look forward to another 10 and 2! Take care, see you next time! ♫

    3. Hi again, Suzanne!

Thanks for making good on your promise to return, dear friend! I know you have a gazillion things to do getting Scootie ready for another school year. I appreciate you making time for some fun here at Shady's.

Yessum, that's a cool video made by The Devil's Daughters featuring the dancers of the Arizona Lindy Hop Society. I've been sitting on that one for years waiting for the right moment to run it and I decided to give it to Hepcat Black. I'm glad you got a kick out of Brian Griffin singing Rick Astley's signature song in an episode of Family Guy. Like you I haven't actually watched Family Guy for a couple of years now, but the characters and their style of humor have stuck with me. It's cool that master Scootie is getting acquainted with the animated series.

Wow, I didn't know that King Creole is your favorite Elvis movie! I agree with you. The swag meter is pegged when Elvis takes the stage behind the bar and belts "Trouble" with Walter Matthau and Carolyn Jones watching from the audience.

I'm so glad I made you smile today, dear Suzanne. You made me smile with your visits and delightful comments. Thank you again for joining the fun. Take care, have a great week and I'll see you back here six days from now for the start of year 13!

Your sweet words mean a lot to me, Kelly, and I am sincerely happy and thankful to have you in my circle of friends. Wow, I didn't know you've been in the blogging game close to 15 years now. 7. Oh my Maggott would have nothing good to say about those swinging sisters in the red dresses. The rest of the gang, including me, loves their tune and they must love The Stray Cats and Betty Page. Speaking of Stray Cats, that young girl does a pretty good rendition of their song but she looks like she is only 14 or something. She can hold the tune for sure singing all by herself without any instruments. I love Elvis and this is one of his best films and I love this song. I also love Paul Revere and the Raiders. I can't believe Rick Astley is in this but it sounds better coming from the dog..pretty cool. The last song is fun and fond memories watching movies that you wish were more true to life. Now I need to watch The Dirty Dozen again. I love that movie and what a great cast! I am trying to think who the dwarf is. I know Donald Sutherland plays one of the Idiots( can't say that nowadays or we will see wrath from many people) but who was the other? Telly Savalas played Maggott so well...he was so evil and psychotic. Too bad John Cassavetes (spelling is not my strong suit and I am too lazy to double check) died so young but he was so good in this. I have to admit, my heart belonged to Charles Bronson. Congratulations on your anniversary in blogland and looking forward to many more

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for coming down to join me for my 12 year blogiversary celebration, dear friend!

You're right. I'm afraid old Maggott would be calling The Devil's Daughters sinners and harlots and reaching for his knife. :) I'm delighted that you enjoyed the Double D's singing "Pass The Bottle" and their music video featuring the Arizona based dance club. I am also pleased that young Romanian zinger Beatrice Florea caught your eye and ear. I am sold on her and her guitar playing collaborator Andrei Cerbu. According to my calculations Beatrice is either age 16 or just turned 17.

I'm glad you agree with Suzanne (above) that King Creole is one of the best Elvis movies. I'm also pleased to learn that you like Paul Revere And The Raiders. Rick Astley's hit song is featured in this post, but I do believe the vocals that come out of Brian Griffin's mouth are those of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, who croons like Sinatra and has several critically acclaimed albums to his credit. The film clip introduced by Debbie the Dellette is a wonderful find. All these years I never heard of the 1968 rockumentary Mondo Daytona aka Get Down Grand Funk aka Weekend Rebellion, and it's cool that it was first screened near us in Bradenton, Florida.

I knew you'd have a few things to say about the 1967 film The Dirty Dozen. It's one of my favorite movies and Mrs. Shady's, too. I love the scene in which Pinkley (Donald Sutherland) is ordered to inspect the troops:

Major John Reisman: You've seen a general inspecting troops before haven't you? Just walk slow, act dumb and look stupid!

I can't think who would be the other idiot and who would be the dwarf. Maybe he was referring to Posey (Clint Walker) and Jimenez (Trini Lopez). John Cassavetes was a brilliant actor, one of my favorites. I agree he died way too young, age 59, from cirrhosis of the liver caused by years of alcoholism. Next month Charles Bronson will be dead and gone 17 years. Time marches on. In fact there aren't many of the main cast members left alive. Jim Brown's Jefferson character died in the movie but Jim is still living at age 84. Trini is 83. Donald Sutherland just turned 85 three days ago.

Thank you again for your kind visit and encouragement, dear friend BB. It means a lot that you stopped by on this special occasion. Have a wonderful week, stay well and I'll see you soon!

Thank you very much for coming to my 12th anniversary party, dear friend! I feel lucky that we made such a great friendship connection over the past twelve months.

I'm glad you enjoyed the selection of tunes played by Shady Bunch radio personalities and Top Hit Club hostess Debbie the Dellette. Over the years I have featured several characters from Family Guy including Brian, Stewie, Chris, Meg, Lois, Peter, Glenn Quagmire, Mayor Adam West and "Herbert the Pervert." 1966 was a huge breakout year for The Raiders with a string of major pop rock hits that were all popular at the Shady Dell. Mark Lindsay became a teen idol to many young women that year and remained one in the decades that followed.

Thanks again for joining the fun, Janet. Stick around. In the coming year I will have no fewer than 24 different celebrity presenters serving as guest hosts here at Shady's Place. Have a super week, dear friend. Stay well and I'll see you soon!

    2. Hi Shady,

I feel like this playlist extended my vacation. You had me grooving and rocking.

I really loved the covers, I loved Beatrice Florea's cover of Rock This Town the best! I love her vocal ranges and she did an awesome job with the song. I liked it better than the original. LOL! I do love the Stray Cats, though. The Devil's Daughters impressed me too. It's so nice to hear that young people like myself are still playing rockabilly music. Rockabilly is so much fun.

Brian. Brian, Brian, Brian. I love Brian and his cover was amazing too. Did Rick Astley steal from him, is that what was being implied in the episode? Poor Brian.

I liked the Elvis tune you posted and I might have to find that movie. The movie looks interesting. I also want to see the Dirty Dozen, I can't say I've seen it yet. Once the library reopens, I'll rent it. I love older war films.

Have a great Wednesday, dear friend!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for making good on your promise to return and check out my post salivating 12 years of blogging.

I'm thrilled that you appreciate the Romanian duo of Beatrice & Andrei. Like you I would rather hear (and see) their version of "Rock This Town" than the Stray Cats original which has been played to death. For quite some time now Beatrice and Andrei have been producing colorful, exciting and entertaining covers of American rock & roll and rockabilly songs. More of their videos are coming up in future posts, so stick around.

King Creole is regarded as one of Elvis Presley's best films. The Dirty Dozen is a fabulous motion picture and Mrs. Shady and I highly recommend it.

This is the second time I have Rickrolled you here at Shady's Place. Around a year ago I posted Rick Astley's original. Yessum, in that episode of Family Guy it seems they are suggesting that Rick stole the song from wedding singer Brian Griffin.

Thanks again for joining the fun and helping me salivate (celebrate) my anniversary, dear friend JM!

    4. Hi Shady,

I love being Rickrolled and Brian can Rickroll me anytime. I just love Brian, LOL! Brian and Stewey are my favourites on that show.

I've heard of Andrei's name before, but I can't place where. I can't wait for your future posts and hear their other rockabilly covers. I bet they are fun! You're right about the Stray Cats, they play that song to death on the station mom listens to.

Can I get King Creole on Netflix? Although, I do have Amazon Prime and maybe I can find it on Amazon for a bargain. Maybe I can find the Dirty Dozen too. My full-time job gave us Friday off to thank us for our service during COVID-19... maybe I can have a movie day after I do some cleaning.

Happy anniversary, dear friend! 12 years is amazing! Enjoy!

    5. Hi again, Jessica Marie!

Yessum, I remember your delight when I Rickrolled you on that post a year ago. It would be hard for me to name a favorite Family Guy character because they are all great. I'm going to spill the beans and let you know that Meg and Lois are both being groomed as Shady Bunch DJs and will be hosting their own SPMM Radio shows in the months and years to come.

Andrei Cerbu and Beatrice Florea have both appeared on my blog before. That's probably why their names and faces are familiar. At the end of 2018 Andrei played three songs on my New Year's Rockin' Eve special:

Andrei & Beatrice performed on my 11th blogiversary special one year ago::

The Romanian duo returned two months ago on May 20 to do an Etta James cover. Scroll down to the last song of the post:

So you see that Andrei and Beatrice are not strangers to Shady's Place. They are returning veterans.

Regarding King Creole on Netflix, I'll get back to you on that. I see that you can buy or rent it on YouTube Movies and on Amazon Prime Video. I do hope you can find and watch The Dirty Dozen. It's a star-studded classic. I see it listed on Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube Video. making tomorrow a movie day sounds like a great way to wind up the work week.

Thanks for the anniversary wish, dear friend JM. More than half of my dirty dozen years of blogging have been spent following you, I do believe, and I am delighted to have you as a friend all this time. Enjoy the rest of your week!

    6. Hi Shady,

That's right, I remember now! I was listening to them throughout the day on their YouTube Channel and I'm just amazed.

I do have YouTube Premium, maybe I will just rent King Creole from YouTube Movies. Then I'll watch The Dirty Dozen on Amazon Prime, I also have Prime. Yeah, I'm saving and paying off things, but I do subscribe to some services.

Awww, I'm honoured. One of my blogs that I just returned to on a community that shot itself in the foot (they required users to obtain a code from members and there weren't many codes, so the community isn't vibrant - Deadjournal), I've been there for 18 years. I joined when I was 13. Since it's private, it was a diary. During college, I sort of dropped out and would blog off and on. The last time I blogged there was 2017. I made a post on my 18th anniversary, but haven't since. Since it's not a vibrant community, I don't feel it's as important. However, I do like the private diary aspect. We'll see.

Anyway, I feel honoured and look forward to following you for many more years to come! Have a great Thankful Thursday, dear friend.

    7. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Andrei Cerbu is a Romanian talent scout of sorts. He collaborates with several young female Romanian singers, produces their cover song performances and plays guitar on their recordings. He also has a band called The Iron Cross that covers Kiss, Bon Jovi and other American rock bands and also records some of their own original material. I will be bringing you the best of Andrei Cerbu's collabs in future posts.

I hope you watch both of those movies. They give you a feel for moving making in the 50s and 60s, important historical perspectives, and contain some of the biggest stars of the period. Elvis, Walter Matthau, Carolyn Jones, Delores Hart, Dean Jagger, Robert Montgomery (Elizabeth "Bewitched" Montgomery's father) Paul Winchell (the famous ventriloquist) and Vic Morrow (the actor killed in the infamous helicopter crash on the set of the Twilight Zone movie) are all in King Creole. Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, John Cassavetes, Charles Bronson, Richard Jaeckel, Clint Walker, Trini Lopez, Jim Brown, George Kennedy, Ralph Meeker, Robert Ryan, Telly "Kojak" Savalas and Donald Sutherland are all in The Dirty Dozen. All of these stars of bygone years are worth getting to know for somebody your age.

Silly question: do people still use MySpace?

Thanks again for coming to visit and have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend JM!

  11. Welcome to the 12yr club Shady! I'm glad I found your rockin' blog some years ago and have learned a lot about music and hits that I know from my era and others that I was too young to remember. Loved all the songs here but my fav has to be the Raiders! I have that album (in a container in my basement with lots of other albums of the 60's and 70's.) I saw Paul Revere and the Raiders many times in Chicago but my last ticket got cancelled when McCormick Place burned down. Anyway, years later when they weren't a big act anymore, I saw them at an outside event at the local YMCA! It was a packed venue and lots of fun that Summer. So that's my history lesson on my life tonight and I'm glad everyone has signed up for another year and I do hope it's actually 30 more years! I'll be 97 by then but who's counting as long as the Dell lives on! Sorry I'm late but it's been a hard work week. Looking forward to a good weekend and I hope all's good on your front. Take care Shady! (P.s...wear a mask, wash your hands..it's a crazy Covid world)

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thank you very much for coming to my party, dear friend! It wouldn't be an anniversary celebration without you, Kath, because you have been a great friend for a long time, a blogging eternity. As I recall, you and I both followed a blogger in Orange County, CA, years ago (Karen?) - and it was through that association that you made the (fateful) decision one day to reach out to me and ask if you could become part of this crazy world of mine. I will always be thankful and grateful that you made that choice.

By now I know that you are my biggest Paul Revere And The Raiders fan. (You'll be happy to know that I have another PR&R ditty coming right up in tomorrow's post hosted by Toto Moto - The All Nite Satellite.) In the mid 60s I was still mainly buying 45s instead of albums. I didn't own a Raiders album until a few years later. You were lucky to have seen them perform live in Chicago on a number of occasions. I hope they put on a good show, especially after the peak of their career had passed and they played at that YMCA. To me, an artist, group or band has a legacy to protect. If they choose to keep going as they grow older, choose to keep making money through live shows, they need to have their act together to avoid disappointing fans and tarnishing memories of their glory years. I realize the Raiders lineup by that time must have been entirely different, with only Paul and Mark as original members... or perhaps only Paul and backup musicians.

Wouldn't it be great if we could meet back here 30 years from now when I am over 100 and you are 97 and have another happy blog reunion? I'll keep going if you'll keep going. :)

I hope you are getting started on a safe, healthy, restful and happy weekend, Kathleen. Again, thank you very much for reaching out in the first place and then sticking with me through the years!

  12. Sorry I'm so late. I saw the word "Dozen" in the title in my sidebar, and assumed you were showing TWELVE videos, so waited until I would have time to watch them all. Instead, I've watched half that, and am glad I did.

I've seen King Creole. It's easily Elvis's best dramatic movie (his best comedy is Viva, Las Vegas though not necessarily BECAUSE of the comedy.) It's directed by Michael Curtiz, who helmed all kinds of movies, including Casablanca and The Adventures of Robin Hood. It's really standard film noir, but the presence of Elvis and the New Orleans setting makes it somewhat novel. It will be another ten years before Walter Matthau becomes a household name, so this is just his supporting player period. He certainly looks the part of a gangster (but then in another movie he made around the same time, he looks the part of a mild-mannered suburbanite, without any change in makeup. Pure acting.) Carolyn Jones is good as Matthau's put-upon girlfriend. As for Elvis, as many film reviewers, film critics, and film historians have pointed out, he didn't so much act as imitate actors he admired, such as Marlon Brando and James Dean. But unlike Brando and Dean, Elvis couldn't, or wouldn't, or maybe didn't even know he had to, create a character and then inhabit that character. Still, had he had a good acting coach, a Stella Adler (who taught Brando) or Lee Strasberg, he might have made a decent thespian. King Creole's music? Well, you just played a song. However, I should warn everybody who might want to see this movie, that it's not really a musical but a drama WITH music (Elvis, naturally enough, plays a singer, and so is shown only singing in situations where one would sing in real life, such as behind a microphone in a nightclub.)

Paul Revere and the Raiders. Watching them perform in that Revolutionary War getup made me wonder if they saw themselves as a bulwark against the British Invasion ("The Beatles are coming! The Beatles are coming!")

I hate to contradict Brian Griffin, but I looked it up and Rick Astley is married to a gorgeous blond (unless she's his beard.) Other than that, I laughed at the nod to Back to the Future.

The Dirty Dozen. As a Clevelander, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that it features former Browns running back Jim Brown, still a legend (despite his problems with the opposite sex) in my home town all these years later.

The Dirty Dozen was directed by Robert Aldrich, a top notch director in his day. Other than the film we're talking about right now, I guess his most famous movie is What Ever Happened to Baby Jane with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. And in the 1970s there was The Longest Yard with Burt Reynolds. But an even better film than either of those is Kiss Me Deadly with Ralph Meeker. Even if Mickey Spillane isn't your cup of whisky without a chaser, Meeker is one cool Mike Hammer. I can't remember much of the plot other than it involves a suitcase the inside of which glows (years later Quentin Tarantino paid homage to it in Pulp Fiction), but there's a lot of great set pieces and bang-up of an ending.

The Dirty Dozen is great, too, though I think Aldrich may have over done the Dirty part. These guys are so bad (in particular Telly Savalas) that it almost makes you feel sorry for the Nazis!

Happy 12th anniversary. My blog also hit the 12-year mark back in I think March, but I never post anything because I always forget about it!

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming to my 12 year blogiversary bash, good buddy! I'm glad you enjoyed the lines delivered by Maj. John Reisman, Franko, Sgt. Bowren and Vernon Pinkley, all characters from The Dirty Dozen, and the songs introduced by returning Shady Bunch veterans Shady Blue, Hepcat Black, Ernest P. Worrell, Shady Green, Brian Griffin and Debbie the Dellette. (Don't tell the others... but Debbie is my favorite.)

Thanks for the review of King Creole. I am not a fan of Elvis Presley films and I haven't seen it. I agree that Walter matthau was a great and versatile actor who could deftly switch from mild-mannered family man to heavy with only a slight adjustment of his facial expression. He never needed to go over the top in his performances. Thanks for the interesting tidbits about Elvis as an actor imitating the style of other macho men of the period.

Paul Revere And The Raiders formed in the late 50s and were already performing shows wearing their trademark Revolutionary War costumes before the Beatles ever became a thing in America. The gimmick served The Raiders well through the 60s. A few days ago Mrs. Shady and I listened to a podcast about Charles Manson and the infamous Manson Family slayings in 1969. Record producer Terry Melcher's name came up as it so often does in discussions of the LA music and counterculture scene of the decade. It was Melcher (Doris Day's son) who encouraged The Raiders to move to SoCal from the Pac NW. Under Melcher's' guidance the band cranked out a string of classic garage rock hits that successfully competed with The Beatles and British Invasion acts.

As I mentioned to Birgit (above) very few of The Dirty Dozen's main cast members are still living. Jim Brown's Jefferson was killed near the end of the movie, but Jimbo is still with us as are Donald Sutherland and Trini Lopez. All three men are in their mid 80s now. I went to see What Ever Happened To Baby Jane when it was first released, and I have also seen those other two Robert Aldrich movies, The Longest Yard and Kiss Me Deadly. I have also seen Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte and Hustle. I agree that the twisted Maggott character in DD makes you sorry for the the Nazis, and especially for that young whore he stabs to death.

Thank you again for your visit and terrific remarks, Kirk. I hope to keep you entertained in year 13 of my blogging career which gets underway dark and early tomorrow morning with a guest shot by Shady's Place mascot Toto Moto. Take care, have a great weekend, and I hope to see you soon, good buddy!
