Shy Girl, Fly Girl, Spy Girl

COLD OPEN:

"From Russia With Love, Main Theme" - John Barry Orchestra,
John Barry & Monty Norman (scenes from October, 1963,
007 film From Russia With Love)

Hello to you.
I am Nina Krilova.
Yes, it is true...
 I come to you
from Russia
with love.

Let me explain.

I am clerical worker-turned-KGB agent on
the FX period spy drama The Americans.

I work at Soviet Embassy in Washington.

I have been trained to use my beauty
and feminine allure to get what I want.

I am...
how you
Americans
say?... an
"under the
covers"
operative.

As fate would have it... or perhaps by design,

I met and became secret lover
of FBI agent Stan Beeman.

CLICK TO START THE VIDEO NOW!
Stan Beeman has become my lifeline, a trusted friend
from enemy camp, a confidant. In Sten Beeman,
have found my very own- "Secret Agent Man!"

"Secret Agent Man" - Johnny Rivers
(Apr. 1966, highest chart pos. #3 Hot 100/#4 Cash Box,
performance on TV show Hollywood Palace)

Stan Beeman has wife and son...
yet he has become obsessed with me.

No one knows about us. No one knows
what happens behind closed doors.

Our relationship is... how you say?...
clandestine... and very naughty.

We meet every day at safe house.
It is our... what you call?... love nest.

I often find myself in "awkward position."
This is because Stan Beeman uses Kama Sutra
as a reference guide. That is joke - ha ha --
one that Shady Del Knight ordered me
to tell. I don't make the rules.
I merely follow them.

In our secret hideaway, Stan Beeman and I make...
how you say?... pillow talk. He and I share a bed
and we also share information - some of it true,
some of it half truth, some of it entirely false.

He knows that I know that he knows that I know
that he knows that I know... but it is all good...
all suspicion and mistrust fades away
when our bodies are entwined.

Knowing that we sin, the temptation is too great
and we cannot resist. Stan Beeman and I are...
what is the phrase?... addicted to love.

What Stan Beeman and I do carries great risk.
He has... how you say?... thrown caution
to the wind to keep me safe and happy.

As I gaze into my future, I see house with white picket fence
and many children. There is no denying it, Stan Beeman...
I am your-- "Russian Doll."

"Russian Doll" - Gully Boys

Stan Beeman is drawn to me... how you say?...
like moth to flame. We are like magnet and steel -
caught in tangled web of romance, passion and
deceit. Our illicit affair is... hard habit to break.

I came to America as a spy,
but I have come to Shady's
Place for a very different
reason. My mission here
is to, how you Americans
 say?..... make pizza
between our countries, so
smile and say "extra cheese."
This I swear. This is my vow.
I, Nina Krilova, will unite
the world through music.

Perhaps you have guessed that my superior, Shady Del Knight,
has tapped me to become the newest member of his
exclusive Shady Bunch DJ department.

CLICK TO START THE VIDEO NOW!

On my new radio program broadcast exclusively here on S-P-M-M,
I will spread glasnost - openness - keeping an open mind. I will
play for you good music from all over the world, such as this
song performed by Welsh singer Shirley Bassey. It is her
only top 40 Billboard hit, the famous theme
from the British spy film Goldfinger.

If you are just joining me,
I am shy girl, fly girl, spy
girl Nina Krilova coming
to you on S-P-M-M
Retrosonic Radio and
From Russia With Love
in a spirit of glasnost.
I do this DJ job by light
of moon because, in day-
time, I am busy as double
agent and secret lover to
FBI agent Stan Beeman.

This is not... how you say?... my first rodeo.

Once I used my charms to seduce my superior, Shady Del Knight.
I attempted to get inside his head and pick his brain for...
how you say?... "intel." It was to no avail. I found
no trace of intelligence. As Mr. Knight discovered,
when you're in love with a beautiful woman.. it's hard.

My time is up and I
must bid you farewell.
Catch me if you can on
The Americans on FX
and Prime, and here
at Shady's Place as
the newest member
of The Shady Bunch.
This was not my
actual show. It was
merely a decoy, a...
how you Americans
say? - sneaky preview.

Nina
Krilova's
Glasnost...
 is coming soon. It is
mandatory for you to
tune in, so watch for

This I promise: my
face and my figure
you will never forget.

This Bud's For You - Volume 1: Shady's Beggin' Bud's
Budding Blossoms ("The Budettes") to Play the Budbox!

After school, and often until late at night,
my friends and I satisfied our hunger for
good music in the Shady Dell dance hall.

We satisfied our hunger for good food and pleasant
conversation at Helen Ettline's snack counter.

Welcome to vol. 1
of my new series
that pays tribute
to another popular
York area hangout
for teenagers -

 BUD'S
 DRIVE-IN.

Bud's was located
on South George St.
extended, just across
the hill from the
Shady Dell.

Like the Dell, Bud's was a meeting place
for teens from various high schools.

Bud's offered good food
and a great selection of
tunes on the jukebox.

My new series is called This Bud's For You. In every edition my
assistants, Bud's Budding Blossoms aka The Budettes,
the cute girls seen hovering around Bud's jukebox, will play
records that were popular at Bud's Drive-in from the mid
60s to 1970, the years I spent hanging out there.

This trio of Shady's
helpers represents the
teenagers who hung out
at Bud's in the mid 60s
(1963 thru early 1967).
Meet Christine, the
ponytailed redhead
now selecting a song,
Denisethe brunette
behind her, and blonde
Sharon on the right.

And here, representing Bud's
teenagers of the late 60s,
(mid 1967 thru 1970),
meet Janice at the
keyboard and her
friend Melissa
behind the box.

Now, here they are,
Bud's Budding Blossoms
to give you a taste of
the musical menu at
Bud's Drive-in.

 THIS BUD'S
 FOR YOU!

CHRISTINE: I'm picking C-4
to play a record that was hot
at Bud's in winter, the early
weeks of 1966 to be exact.
It's the second number one
charting hit by Motown's
child prodigy Stevie Wonder,
his first hit after dropping
the "Little" from his name.
This single crossed over
and reached the top 3 on
Billboard and Cash Box.
Listen now to Stevie
Wonder and-- "Uptight
(Everything's Alright)"

""Uptight (Everything's Alright)" - Stevie Wonder
(Jan./Feb. 1966, highest chart pos. #1 R&B, #3 Hot 100,
#3 Cash Boxperf. in UK on Top Of The Pops)

JANICE: It's the spring of 1967
at Bud's, and I'm choosing F-19
to play one of the best records
released by Frankie Valli and
The 4 Seasons, a song written
by group member Bob Gaudio
along with Peggy Santiglia,
lead singer of The Angels.
This single only reached
the top 15 at the time of its
release, but it was destined
to become a fan favorite in
the decades that followed
and a popular spin in the
Northern Soul clubs of
England in the '70s. Listen
to The 4 Seasons-- "Beggin'."

"Beggin'" - The 4 Seasons
(Mar./Apr. 1967, highest cht. pos. #12 Cash Box/#16 Hot 100)

MELISSA: I spotted one I wanna hear,
Janice. Please punch in L-12 for me...
because I'm excited about this record
by Elvis Presley, a story about a man
searching for his missing love. Penned
by Eddie Rabbitt and Dick Heard and
recorded in February, 1969, it took a
year for the song to be released as a
single and start climbing the chart.
Here's Elvis riding high during
his comeback period, making
the top 10 winner's circle
on Cash Box with a cool
country song about the
cold "Kentucky Rain."

"Kentucky Rain" - Elvis Presley
(Feb./Mar. 1970, highest chart pos. #10 Cash Box/#16 Hot 100)

 TIME TO EAT!

DENISE: I love records
inspired by dance crazes,
and I'm gonna play S-11,
"The Jerk" by The Larks,
an R&B vocal group led
by Don Julian that was
known in the 50s as
 The Meadowlarks.
In the early weeks
of '65, this ditty was
hot on the Bud Box
and, thru the magic of
this SPMM simulcast,
you'll see The Larks
 perform their hit on
Hollywood A Go-Go!

"The Jerk" - The Larks
(Jan. 1965, highest chart pos. #6 Cash Box/#7 Hot 100,
#9 R&Bperf. on April 17, 1965 ep. of Hollywood A Go-Go)

SHARON: Hey Deenie, do me
a favor and press in number
G-14. I love Johnny Rivers,
and I wanna hear his version
of a rhythm and blues song
written in the mid 50s by
blues great Willie Dixon.
It's the summer of '65
and Johnny Rivers is
climbing the chart and
nearing the top 5 with
-- "Seventh Son!"

"Seventh Son" - Johnny Rivers"
(June/July 1965, highest chart pos. #7 Hot 100 & Cash Box)

That does it for vol. 1 of our series
This Bud's For You. Many thanks
to Bud's Budding Blossoms aka
 The Budettes: Melissa, Janice,
Denise, Sharon and Christine,
for feeding the old jukebox and
playing the top tunes from the
golden years at Bud's Drive-in.
I leave you with one last nugget
from the Bud Box, a song
written and recorded by
Houston born reggae
and pop singer
Johnny Nash.

In the fall of 1968, "Hold Me Tight" went top 5 in the U.S.
and in the UK and topped the Canadian chart, making it
Johnny's second biggest hit after "I Can See Clearly Now."

gang at Bud's, this is grandmaster emcee Shady saying
so long and remember our famous slogan--

Salivating 74 Years of Service to the Blog World!

Hiya, I'm Brian Griffin!

As you recall, I'm a professional martooni taste tester.
(Lishen, I'm not as drunk as some thinkle peep I am.)
I am also the personable pooch from Family Guy
and a member of the DJ team on S-P-M-M
Retrosonic Radio here at Shady's Place.

Sorry about the typo in the title
of the post.  It should read 174
14 YEARS.
That's right!  This week,
Shady is observing his
14th blogiversary!

That figure includes 10 years as emcee of the old blog,
Shady Dell Music & Memories, and 4 years as the so-
called brains behind Shady's Place Music & Memories.

I shay this calls for a shalivation... and the gang's all here.
Well, some of them are here, because we only have time
for the traditional seven song salute. Without further
delay, let's start from scratch and get to the music
because I'm itchin' to dance with your leg.

If you're a fan of my show Eclectic Avenue, then you know I love variety
(and Jerky Treats).  The original by Smokey Robinson And The Miracles
is still the greatest, but wait till you hear what I found, a cool rerecorded
version of Smokey's "More Love" released in the summer of 2015!

A Doctor Donald D. Rosey good morning to you,
and happy 14 to Shady Del Knight! The Doctor's
in the house! I'm Dr. Don Rose, top 40 DJ at
"Quixie in Dixie," on loan to S-P-M-M here at
Shady's Place. I dropped by on this special day
to spin the kind of record you're likely to hear
on my Rose-Colored Glasses show, sounds
of the 60s that are good for what ails ya. In
1966, The Left Banke found fame thanks to
their top 5 hit "Walk Away Renee." In 1968
Motown's Four Tops covered the song and
scored a hit of their own, a record that
finished in the top 10 on Cash Box.

Hey, Vern! How's life been treatin' ya?
This here's yer old buddy, yer old pal
Ernest P. Worrell.

Ain't none of my beeswax, Vern, but looks like you got
somethin' caught in yer teeth there. Looks like Popeye
ain't the only one who's been eatin' his spinach!

Hey, Vern, guess what. Today Shady
Del Knight is celebrating the big 1-4.
No, he's not 14 years old, even tho
it sure seems like it sometimes.
I mean that he's been sharin' his
music and memories with us for
14 years on two different blogs.
He deserves a great big attaboy.

Just a reminder, Vern. On my S-P-M-M show Rock-A-Billygoat, I spin
the best of rockabilly, early rock & roll, rock & roll revival, traditional
country & western and country-pop crossover. Now hold onto
yer hat, Vern, 'cause I got a dilly for you right cheer.
This boy and his band played everything from
rock & roll to R&B, folk, country, pop
and even psychedelic rock.

and his group The First Edition appearing on The Smothers Brothers
Comedy Hour and doing "But You Know I Love You," a single

Well, I'll be ding, Vern. We're
plumb outta time. Me and my
best buds need to skedaddle.
Hope you enjoyed this
anniversary bash we
threw to celebrate
Shady's 14 years
as a blogger.

Don't worry your head none, 'cause I'll be back in two shakes of a jiffy
