THAT TIME FORGOT!
Hello, friends! Dell Rat Tom
welcoming you to volume 16
of my exclusive 36-part
Shady's Place series
SAVED
BY THE
DELL
This series was made possible by Jim Sieling, my good friend
in York, and the husband of John Ettline's niece Nancy.
Jim Sieling
(faithful friend of The Dell)
As you recall, Jim acquired the Dell's Seeburg jukebox (below)
and many of the records that played on it through the decades.
Keep in mind that the Dell had two jukeboxes - one in Helen's
snack bar up at the house, the other down in "The Barn" -
the dance hall John had built onto the barn and garage.
When Jim took possession of the Dell's record collection,
he discovered, to his dismay and ours, that many of
the discs had been improperly handled and stored.
Simply put - they were filthy.
Mice (Dell rats?) had made a home among the records, and at least
one snake (a Violet Hill viper?) had slithered in looking for a meal.
Jim undertook the mammoth job of cleaning, organizing and cataloging
the records, then sent me the finished alphabetical list. There are 6,065
records on Jim's list including Christmas records, 12,130 songs in all!
My series brings you the 180 best Dell jukebox songs from 1955
through 1963, a period long before I arrived on the scene.
This series is dedicated to
the memory of Nancy Sieling.
Nancy Sieling
(faithful friend of The Dell)
Nancy, who was John Ettline's niece and Jim's wife, passed away in 2020.
Over the years, Nancy's generous contributions of pictures, information
and Shady Dell memorabilia greatly enhanced the quality of both of my
Dell-themed blogs. We have Nancy to thank for rescuing many of the
Dell's priceless platters when they were art risk of being thrown into
a trash dumpster and destroyed, hence the name of my series...
SAVED BY THE BELL DELL
Of course, we also have Jim to thank for tackling the enormous
task of cleaning, organizing and cataloging these 6,065 records!
Okay, it's time to use your imagination. Pretend that you are
at the Dell looking at the musical menu on the jukebox.

DELL SONG 79
JUNE - JULY 1960

Once again I thank our late, great friend of the Dell,
Nancy Sieling, and her husband Jim, for doing the
good work of preserving the Shady Dell legacy for
future generations. We owe you a debt of gratitude.
Tom -- Well, I struck out on all five of your songs in Volume 16. Unfortunately there was no "California Nights" to surprise me. I didn't recognize even one of your picks -- hopefully I'll do better next time or when you hit my college years. Jim
ReplyDeleteHi, Jim!
DeleteThanks for reporting in right away to become the Early Bird this time around, my good friend!
Thanks also for letting me know that all 5 featured Dell songs in Vol. 16 of Saved are new to your ears. It might help you to know that song #1, "Gee (But I'd Give The World)," was released as the B side of the Crests' hit single "Step By Step," a song that might be more familiar to you since it reached #14 on the chart.
The biggie for me is the song "Love You So" by R&B singer Ron Holden With The Thunderbirds. I hadn't heard that song in at least 60 years, and I was elated when it popped back into my life during the musical vetting process for this series. "Love You So" is the biggest hit in this post. It brushed the top 10 on the R&B chart and soared even higher on the pop charts, peaking at #7 on Billboard and #5 on Cash Box. The record was a slow burn, taking many weeks to catch fire and climb the chart - a great memory for me. Unfortunately, Ron Holden was only age 57 when he died of a heart attack.
Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, good buddy Jim. Have a merry month of May until my next post starts somewhere around the 25th. See you then!
Tom, I knew 3 of the five songs and also remember The Wind by the Diablos. I knew the Crests and Ron Holden. The other two were new to me. What I really liked was Yvette Mimeux. How could anyone forget her after Where The Boys Are movie. Jerre
ReplyDeleteHi, Jerre!
DeleteYou finish second and take home the silver medal, good buddy! This is the first time ever that you and Jim were the first two people to comment on a post. How about that?
I suspected that you know "Gee" like the back of your hand since you are a longtime Johnny Maestro superfan. I'm thrilled that you also remember that terrific oldie but goodie by Ron Holden. I remember it being big in Central PA. Ron's "Love You So" followed Johnny's "Step By Step" up the chart in March and April, 1960. While "Love You So" reached its zenith at #7 on Billboard in April, it was quite a late spring bloomer on Cash Box, still just barely in the top 30 when April ended. It took the entire month of May to work its way to #17 before making a big leap to #11 the first week of June, winding up at #5 on June 18, meaning that it peaked two months later on Cash Box than on Billboard. Tracing its long and fitful chart journey, I must say that it's rare to see a record that alternates so often between appearing ready to stall and disappear and coming back to life and making large leaps upward, finishing in the top 5 winner's circle. By the way, I'm thinking you might agree that Holden's "Love You So" sounds a lot like The Gladiolas'/Diamonds' hit "Little Darlin'" in terms of its melody and Calypso influenced rhythm.
Thanks for pointing out that The Jesters' well known 1960 doo-wop recording "The Wind" is actually a cover of a version originally released in September, 1954, by the Detroit based doo-wop group The Diablos Featuring Nolan Strong. The Diablos original spent one week on the Bubbling Under chart at #114. The Jesters cover spent two weeks Bubbling Under and made it to #110. "So Blue" by The Vibrations lasted 3 weeks on the Bubbling Under survey and also finished at #110. The Mohawks, a doo-wop group out of Philadelphia, missed all the charts with their release on Philly's Val-ue label. It should be noted that The Mohawks' cover of "Bewitched (Bothered And Bewildered)," originally a show tune and popular song from the 1940 Rodgers and Hart musical Pal Joey, was issued as the B side of their single with the song "I Got A Gal" on the A side. However, a reissue on Jerry Greene's famous Collectables label, switched the sides and gave top billing to what doo-wop fans would say is the better song on the slab - "BB&B."
Yes, good buddy. Yvette Mimieux was quite an "it girl" in 1960. In August that year, she wowed me in her breakout role of "Weena" in H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. Then, when the snow was flying at the end of the year, she was heating up the screen big time in Where The Boys Are.
Thanks again for spending some time in vocal group heaven with The Crests, The Thunderbirds, The Vibes, The Mohawks and The Jesters, good buddy Jerre. Have a great May and look for my next post around the 25th!
Even when I don't know any of the songs (or even the artists!), you know I enjoy seeing all the advertisements and magazine covers. And of course the dinosaurs!! Pat and I wish you a good week and hope you and Mrs. Shady have a lovely May!
ReplyDeleteHi, Kelly & Pat!
DeleteThe bronze is yours and yours alone, dear friend. No one can strip it from you! Welcome to Part 16 of my 36-part series that takes long lost Dell songs out for a deserving spin. Yessum, for your enjoyment, I included another set of art renderings depicting prehistoric DinahShores. :) It won't be until Vol. 19 that I will need to start repeating dinosaur images.
I'm so glad you learned some new songs and some new vocal groups today, and that you also enjoyed scrolling down through the movie posters, retail catalogs, print ads and mag covers. Be sure to show Pat the cute, mischievous wiener dog on the cover of Calling All Girls.
Thank you again for your cheery visit and comment, dear friend Kelly. Have a safe and happy May and I'll see you near the end of the month!
Hello...greetings and salutations my dear Mr. Shady. Today is our big voting day in Canada and I pray Mark Carney gets in not Poillivre who is too much like Trumpf. On to better things, I love the mix of music, fashion and film. The music is always so nice to listen to. I get a kick of the fresh air one breathes in when smoking...hahahaaa. I will take any of those cars and I will slip into a nice blue dress with gloves. The people looked so sleek whereas today, I see many dressed in their pajamas and even their slippers! I would welcome sweatpants as long as they don't hang halfway down their butt. I love the films you chose as well...who doesn't love 13 ghosts or the creature from 20,000 fathoms. I love Inherit the Wind with that Wind so g. Very cool. I hope your day is lovely and may see you still, this week..maybe not but always nice to see you here.
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteI hope the vote breaks your way up there, dear friend. No matter what the outcome, rest assured that you will soon be part of the U.S.A. - our 51st state!!!
I'm excited and delighted that you got so much enjoyment out of the post, dearie. Yessum, it's been almost 33 years since I kicked the smoking habit, but back in the 60s, my girlfriend (the future Mrs. Shady #1) and I both occasionally smoked Spring cigarettes. They were delicious and nutritious. I can picture you behind the wheel of one of those sleek 1960 automobiles. You strike me as the Mustang Sally type. :) Yessum, I include numerous clothing ads in this series because I truly miss the era when guys and girls spent more time on their appearance, enjoyed getting spruced-up before going out in public. Thanks for noticing the song "The Wind" followed by the poster for Inherit The Wind. Good eye! Yessum, in 1960, my dad or big brother took 10-year-old me to the theater to see House Of Usher, 13 Ghosts, Lost World and other scary movies. I deeply regret that they didn't take me to see Jayne Mansfield in Playgirl After Dark! :)
Thanks again for setting aside time in your busy day to pay me a visit and for your fun comments, dear friend BB. Take care of yourself and my buddy Harley and I'll see you back here when I return with my next post around May 25!
I remember The Lost World very well.
ReplyDeleteSome really cool ads. Always fun to see those. Dig the old corvette.
Hi, Alex!
DeleteThanks for coming over for a look and a listen, good buddy!
I appreciate you mentioning Irwin Allen's The Lost World, the 1960 film adaptation of the 1912 novel by Arthur Conan Doyle. I saw the fantasy adventure movie shortly after it was released to theaters. Thrill-seeking ten year old Shady loved the screen spectacle as the group dealt with cannibals, dinosaurs, carnivorous plants and giant spiders. In his comment, Dell Rat Jerre (above) mentioned 1960s "it girl" Yvette Mimieux. As you know, the Lost World cast included another popular actress of the period, Jill St. John. Hard to believe that Jill will soon be 85 years old! I should add that Yvette Mimieux died three years ago just after turning 80.
I'm glad you enjoyed the cool ads including the one for the 1960 model Corvette. Thanks again for your visit and comment, good buddy Alex. Have a great May and I'll see you late in the month when I return with my next post!
Hello Shady, 🇨🇦 warm greetings from Montreal, Canada. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful memories...a journey back in time very much appreciated. I am a 68 year old baby boomer.
ReplyDeleteHi, Linda, and welcome to Shady's Place Music & Memories! I'm excited to have you drop by and to have another Canadian friend in the making.
DeleteIf you enjoyed the pictures and music in this post, you will find boomer friendly content like it throughout the year at Shady's Place. My posts are typically long, but spaced nearly a month apart. I do hope you will choose to follow me.
I am on my way out the door this morning, but promise to swing by your site later in the day to check it out and read your current post.
I'm delighted that you enjoyed this trip back to your boomer past. Thank you again for stopping by to say a friendly hello, dear Linda!
Hi Shady, I had an old blog years ago...Linda's Peaceful Place, and I believe you and I followed one another's blogs back then. I started my new current blog, Linda's Relaxing Lair, just last month and I lost access to my old blog due to the amount of years I had no computer! So I am quite familiar with your site and you of my old blog, just so many years have passed...7, actually. I am glad that I found you again, and now you know where to find me. At any rate, it hasn't been easy finding my former friends and followers, but I am very glad of the ones I did find! Take care of yourself and thanks so much for your visit and brief comment.
DeleteHi again, Linda!
DeleteThank you for refreshing my memory, dear old friend. You noted on your current blog that you had 800 followers on your old site. That astounding number being the case, I am honored that you saw fit to track me down and reestablish our friendship. I look forward to visiting your Relaxing Lair, and keep in mind that you will always receive a warm welcome here at Shady's Place. I also want you to know that I read the other posts, comments and replies on your new blog and learned that one of your former blogger friends passed away a few years back. It made me sad to realize how tough a loss it was for you, given that you liked and respected the gentleman so much.
Your cheery greetings made my day, Linda, and I thank you for the original reach out and follow-up. Keep safe and well until we reunite near the end of next month!
Hi Shady, I posted the last comment on my cellphone and the word brief appeared in reference to your kind comment on my blog. It was unintentional. Your comment was very much appreciated and many things you said resonate with me. Yes, a blogger friend passed away 6 years ago during the time of my absence without a computer. On my old blog I posted on a daily basis and this time I will post once a weekly basis...on Mondays. I totally understand you cutting back your time on the blog because I am doing the same thing. It is wonderful to reconnect with you, my good friend and I will look for your posts at the end of each month. Take good care of yourself.
DeleteHi, Linda!
DeleteThanks for explaining where the word "brief" came from. It is a word seldom associated with Shady Del Knight, known throughout the blogging world for his "long-winded fingers." :)
Yessum, when you get to a certain age, time becomes more precious, and that it what led me to get off the treadmill, slow the pace and allow more time to pass between posts. Be advised that my posts will not always show up at the end of the month. The publish date varies month to month according to my schedule and tie-ins with holidays, significant dates in history, etc.
Thank you again for taking an interest in what's happening here at Shady's Place, dear friend Linda!
I love those vintage ads and magazine covers. Thanks for sharing some of the girl and her dachshund dog. Those are some of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI want a banana split now after seeing that picture.
Vincent Price! Oh he was so good in those old horror movies. I loved him. That voice was awesome.
The music this time was new to me. I think it was before my time for the most part.
I hope you have a good month. Falcor says hi.
Hi, Mary & Falcor!
DeleteIt's great to see you, dear friend! Welcome in as I present Pt. 16 of my Saved series featuring old gold records salvaged from the Shady Dell jukebox by friends Jim & Nancy Sieling.
I'm pleased that you enjoy the pictures in this series showing the products people were buying, the movies they were watching, the buzzworthy movie stars and the clothing styles ladies were wearing in the Atomic Age/Mad Men years. Yessum, I hope my buddy Falcor got a chuckle out of seeing the sausage hound on the cover of Calling All Girls.
Yessum, how about those two mouthwatering ads for Sealtest ice cream? I don't think I ever tried that Rainbow combination of vanilla, raspberry and lemon-line. Have you? How about that contest asking consumers to dream up their favorite flavor combo, name it, and win a year's supply of ice cream? I wonder if the offer still stands after 65 years. :)
Thanks for giving a nod to Vincent Price, my favorite horror king. I liked how he infused his villainous characters with humor and pathos.
I'm happy to have introduced 5 new songs to your ears in this volume. Thank you very much for paying a visit and for your generous comment, dear friend Mary. Take care of yourself and my buddy Falcor until we meet again near the end of May!
Hi Shady! I'm a little late because I was called into work yesterday. I don't work Mondays, but they needed help and I answered the call. Anyway, I just love, love, love, all the fashion! I remember the Ship and Shore brand but I was only 7 in 1960 so probably didn't wear any of their fashions. I'm sure Mom did. I also love the cars back then. You could actually tell what kind they were unlike today when all SUVs look alike. Wasn't everyone thin back then? I almost didn't recognize Shelly Fabares in that pic. Her hair is darker than usual. She was always so beautiful. Plus, all the cig commercials and I never heard of the Spring brand. But then I never smoked so go figure! I can't comment on the songs because I didn't know them but I have gone over the fashion and commercials a couple of times! I swear, some of the fashions could be worn today. Oops, we have a tornado warning right now! Sheesh...so I'll go get prepared to hunker in the basement. Have a good rest of your week Shady! Enjoy the last day of April tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteWelcome to Vol. 16 of Saved By The Dell, dear friend! Thanks for making time during your busy schedule to drop in an soak up some 1960 nostalgia.
Yessum, one thing I know by now is that you love to gaze at the vintage fashions in this series. Ship and Shore ads abound. You are so right about the cars looking more distinctive back then. Nowadays, when I drive down the street, I always notice how the vehicles all look like they came from the same cookie cutter, mine included.
As I told BB (abovce) my girlfriend of the late 60s (soon to become Mrs. Shady #1) smoked Spring cigarettes in the 60s, and so did I for a while. I shudder to think of all the harmful garbage I put inside my body all those years, and so thankful that I was able to eliminate all of it from my life that fateful day in June, 1992, almost 33 years ago now.
I read about the strong winds and tornados that swept through the midwest and left a swath of destruction from Indiana through Pennsylvania. I do hope Whispering Pines was spared any damage. Let me know.
Please show my smooch pooch Annabelle the sausage hound on the cover of Calling All Girls, and thank you again for coming over for a visit and for your lovely comment. Stay safe and well until we get together again near the end of May, dear friend YaYa!
Looks like Johnny Maestro's group was interracial. Rare for 1960.
ReplyDeleteHowever, as someone who likes both do-wop and Tin Pan Alley, the highlight for me was the Mohawks cover of Rodgers and Hart. Talk about racial boundaries transcended!
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for swinging by, good buddy!
Good observation, Kirk. Along with The Crests, integrated doo-wop acts of the period included The Del-Vikings, known for their major 1957 hits "Come Go With Me" and "Whispering Bells," and The Impalas, who made their mark in 1959 with "Sorry (I Ran All the Way Home)."
Thanks for singling out the little known group The Mohawks and their soulful version of "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered." I have a few more tidbits about the old R&H song. Rod Stewart and Cher released their duet version on a 2003 single that cracked the top 20 on the Easy Listening chart. A reference to the song was made in season 8 of the 1960s sitcom Bewitched in the episode titled "Bewitched, Bothered and Baldoni." In more recent years, the song was used in the soundtrack of The Crown, the historical drama TV series about the reign of QEII.
Thanks again for your visit and comment, good buddy Kirk. I hope to see you again when I unleash my next post near the end of next month. Take care!
Hi there friend. I hope I didn't miss your three day window. I didn't know any of these songs as shown but I have heard Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered done by Rod Stewart and Cher! I remember watching the Lennon Sisters on Lawrence Welk's show and always got excited to hear my name on TV - LOL. I think it's funny that the magazine asks IF she should grow up.
ReplyDeleteI was really bummed not to be able to complete the A to Z this year. I don't know whether I'll try to pick it up again when things settle down here or not. MIL is still in the nursing/rehab center and so I'm there at least twice a day. Doesn't leave time for much else but wanted to pop on here and say hi! Have a wonderful weekend dear friend.
I just read your comment above and I watched the Crown but don't remember the song being used.
ReplyDeleteHi, Janet!
DeleteFor you, dear friend, I will "come out of retirement" and leave a reply. Welcome, dear Janet, to Vol. 16 of Saved!
Thank you for letting us know that you remember the "BB&B" song in the form of a Rod Stewart - Cher duet. As I mentioned in the previous reply, their version did well on the Adult Contemporary chart in 2003. Mrs. Shady and I watched and loved The Crown and wish more series like it would be produced in the near future. Is it possible that you were named after Janet Lennon? She was a major show biz personality over a long period of time and it seems possible. Did you ever ask your mother if the most popular member of The Lennon Sisters was the inspiration for your name?
Yessum, it is truly a shame that your A to Z series got derailed early in the month. The important thing is that your mother-in-law is hanging on and hopefully making progress toward recovery and return home. The way things are going, the theme of your series will still be relevant next April, saving you the trouble of having to compose new A to Z content. Months pass quickly. Before you know it, it'll be time for the 2026 theme reveal post. 2026 being a key election year, your topic will be spot on if you choose to save it until then.
Thank you very much for breaking away from your family responsibilities to visit and comment here at Shady's Place, dear friend Janet. You and your MIL are in my thoughts daily. Please make sure you are taking good care of yourself as you continue to assist her through this challenging time.
Great vintage vibes :D
ReplyDeleteHi, Kinga!
DeleteWelcome to Shady's Place Music & Memories, my new friend!
I am genuinely excited to have a visitor from Poland, the first ever that I know of. Having taken a cursory look around your site, I see that you are a very distinguished young woman - multilingual and well traveled with a variety of skills and interests. I also notice that you share my love of dogs and music. I will be back over soon to read more and leave a comment.
I'm delighted that you enjoyed the vintage vibes in this post. My posts are spaced an average of four weeks apart, and I cordially invite you to come back and see what I have to offer in my next one on May 25.
Thank you again for your interest in Shady's Place, Kinga. Enjoy the rest of your month and I hope to chat with you again soon!
Hello :) Thanks for your welcome. I'll definitely be checking back here often and waiting for more posts :)
