Call Girls Vol. 1 - Calling All Call Girls!

Welcome to Call Girls...
a new Shady's Place series inspired by

... a feature that I ran on my old blog years ago.

It's another Brain Buster Quiz that tests your music I.Q.

Can your noggin make the grade?

Put on your thinking cap.

  Think hard!

A headache is better than the shame and
embarrassment of the dreaded dunce cap!

Put that away! You won't find the answers in there, toots!

The game is simple. There are 3 hidden songs.

To introduce the songs, I am calling upon the Call Girls -
vintage women shown talking on the telephone,
a common theme in photos of the period.

The Call Girls are staffing a phone bank located
in the penthouse suite of Shady Towers.

The phones are ringing off the hook as the ladies take
song requests called in by SPMM radio listeners.

Based on those phone requests, each Call Girl will play a song for you.

She'll tell you the name of the artist and provide other clues.

The pictures and illustrations that go along with each
song intro also hint at the title. All you need to do is

When you think of the answer, simply click on the designated image.

You will find out if you are correct and be able to listen to the song.

Check the scoring chart at the end to learn how you rate as a music trivia buff.

Okay, it's time to play the game.

 SONG #1

Call Girl Betty
Hi! I'm Call Betty, one of Abigail Ambrosia's assistants on the Shady's Place
series Ask Abigail and moonlighting as a Call Girl. I have a listener on the line
who wants me to play a popular song of the mid 60s. Co-written by Marvin Gaye,
it has stood the test of time as one of Motown's signature songs. It was originally
recorded by Martha And The Vandellas, resulting in a #2-charting crossover hit
for the girl group in 1964. My caller wants to hear the groovy cover waxed
by The Mamas And The Papas and released in November, 1966, on the
B side of their single "Words Of Love." By early 1967, this killer bee
had caught on with listeners to become a minor hit in its own right.

As you gaze at these three vintage magazine covers...

you will notice that they are various issues of Calling All Girls.

That is another clue to help you guess the title of the
requested song which begins with the powerful words:

 CALLING OUT AROUND THE WORLD

ARE YOU READY FOR A BRAND NEW BEAT?

Think you know the answer? Can't wait to shout it out loud?

Click on the third issue of Calling All Girls below
to make sure you're right and listen to the song.

 NAME THAT TUNE!

 SONG #2

Call Girl Anita
Hello, I'm Call Girl Anita. If you're just tuning in, I'm seated with other
Call Girl women in the phone bank at Shady Towers, taking requests and
playing songs. At this very moment, I'm fielding a call from a listener
who wants to hear a song written by British composer Tony Hatch
for Petula Clark and first recorded by Pet in 1965. Covered that
same year by LA-based middle of the road singer and guitarist
Chris Montez, the song became an Easy Listening standard.

Before I play the song, see if you can guess the title.

The images I'm showing you depicting vintage women
using the telephone should give you the clues you need.

I can also tell you that this song is not to be confused with
the Blondie hit of the same, the theme from American Gigolo

This song contains the lyrics:

IF YOU'RE FEELING SAD AND LONELY
 THERE'S A SERVICE I CAN RENDER

Now gaze at the last image below and...

 NAME THAT TUNE!

 SONG #3

Call Girl Loretta
I'm Call Girl Loretta, and I'm checking this next artist's name
because I never heard it before. I've got an old-timer on the phone
with me. He says he loves rockabilly and would like me to play
a song by, just a moment while I check again, Carl Dobkins Jr.
Apparently, the song was a top 3 hit in the summer of 1959.

As you examine this last set of images...

of vintage women and schoolgirls...

engaging in one of their favorite activities...

note the way the text appears, the one the girl is focusing on.

It is an important clue to the title of the song.

Here are the opening lyrics:

 DON'T BELIEVE ALL THOSE LIES
 DARLIN', JUST BELIEVE YOUR EYES
AND LOOK... LOOK...

 NAME THAT TUNE!

When you've come up with the answer, click on the pic
of the girls below to make sure and to hear the song.

    1. Hi, Mary!

I just found your comment locked away in spam, dear friend. So sorry I can't control the mischievous blog gremlins who seem very fond of stealing your comments in particular.

Anyway, thanks for joining the fun as I introduce another new series dedicated to the music trivia game Name That Tune, and another series in which the focus is on vintage images as much as vintage music.

Being younger as you are, it doesn't surprise me that you failed to guess any of these three boomer oldies based on clues and lyrics. Rules are rules, and a score of zero means that you must wear the dreaded dunce cap. :) However, I hope you had fun learning three new songs and gazing at an array of vintage Call Girl images.

Thank you again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Mary!

    2. By the way, Mary, I am happy to set the record straight and inform you that you are the Early Bird this week. Your comment was submitted first, even though I didn't see it until after friend Kelly commented. Congratulations to you and sorry that the naughty gremlins swiped your comment and tried to deny you the Early Bird crown. See you tamale!

  2. Well there's still hope for me. I got one correct. At least I'm not wearing the dunce cap this time, like I normally do in your guessing games here.

    1. Hi, Kelly & Pat!

Congratulations, dear friend! You and Pat were nose to nose at the finish line, and therefore share the honor of being his week's co-Early Birds! Thanks for putting your noggin to the test in another rousing game of Name That Tune hosted by another new group of Shady's Place presenters, The Call Girls.

You're turning this into a guessing game for me, dear friend, because I'd love to know which song you guessed. It's fun to keep track as more people report in. Song #1 and Song #2 are both easy, so I'm guessing it was one of those.

Yessum, you escaped the dreaded dunce cap this time, but look out - there are more variations of Name That Tune coming up in two more new series, so stick around to have your knowledge of music trivia tested again.

Thanks so much for coming over on your Saturday, dear friend Kelly. I wish you a safe and happy weekend!

    2. It was number two. The Blondie hint gave it away!

    3. Thanks for letting me know, Kelly. It's one of many examples in the history of rock & roll of "same title - different song," but the title's the name of the game in Name That Tune, regardless of which song it refers to.

Thanks again for playing and enjoy the rest of your weekend, dear friend Kelly!

    4. Hi again, Kelly. In all fairness, I needed to strip you of the Early Bird title and give it to friend Mary (above). Mary submitted her comment a half hour before you arrived. An hour later, I found her comment in spam after declaring you the Early Bird. So you take second place this week, and your visit is very much appreciated. Have a wonderful Sunday, dear friend Kelly!

  3. This is the first time I've heard the Mamas and the Papas cover of "Dancing in the Streets". While I still prefer the Martha and the Vandells original, this one is pretty good in its own right. Chris Montez cover of "Call Me: is OK, but Petula Clark is Petula Clark after all. I couldn't identify the lyrics on the screen for the third song but recognized "My Heart Is an Open Book" the moment it started playing.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for being a Day One Doozy, good buddy!

In the spring of 1966, "California Dreamin'" became a solid jukebox hit at The Shady Dell. The Mamas And The Papas, new to me at the time, put down such a groovy new sound that I ran out and bought the single and soon thereafter their debut album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears. That same year, I added the group's singles "Monday, Monday," ""Words Of Love" and "I Saw Her Again." I wasted no time getting familiar with the songs on the album and the B side songs on their 45s. The group's fine cover of "Dancing In The Street" made the "Words Of Love" single a genuine "doublesider." I'm glad you like their version and happy to introduce it to you.

Over the decades, I forgot about Carl Dobkins Jr. and his claim to fame "My Heart Is An Open Book," a top 3 hit from the summer of 1959 and a biggie in my neck of the woods. I'm pleased that you actually recognized the oldie the moment it started playing.

This new Call Girls series, along with Saved By The Dell and two more new series to be launched later this year, will give me an opportunity to share with you hundreds of images of vintage 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s women engaged in various activities or simply posing for the camera. In these series, the photos, cartoons and illustrations will be just as important as the music.

Thanks again for coming early and have a great week, good buddy Kirk!

  4. Tom,

I got 2 out of 3 right, so I'm a promising Call Girl! Ya!!! If I didn't look for your cleverly worded clues and had enough coffee then I'm sure I wouldn't have figured these out. The one that stumped was the last song which I haven't heard before today. Great fun series. Have a boogietastic week, dear friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I'm glad you found my post and glad I found your comment, dear friend. Let me explain. My blog gremlins swiped your comment and deposited it in the spam bin. This has been happening with other people, but I'm pretty sure this is the first time it has happened with a comment of yours. It is a worrisome omen. I found your comment just now and published it. Thank you very much!

On top of that, the folks at Blogger removed this post within minutes of me publishing it Saturday morning. They obviously did so because the title "Call Girls" was suspicious to them and drew red flags. They said I could request a review and I did. Minutes later, after reading the post and discovering that it was quite innocent and did not contain any explicit content, they approved and published it. But I think their original action of deleting it resulted in the post not showing up in search engines. This is day three of the post's run, and so far very few people are even aware that it exists because it did not show up in their reading lists. Since this is the launch of a new series, the same thing is bound to happen every time I publish "Call Girls." It will be an added inconvenience and hassle for me and for my friends and followers.

As if all that weren't enough, your CAAC blog gremlins ate my comment this morning! This is just crazy, isn't it? :)

Hey, I'm tickled that you knew two of the three hidden songs in this first round of Name That Tune. Yessum, I figured you got the first two songs correct and it was the third one that stumped you. I predict the same will happen to most people who play. In each volume of the series, I will structure the game so that at least one song title is a giveaway, perhaps two, but one of the songs will be a toughie that few people know and is harder to guess.

I'm glad you had fun today and like the new series. Thanks again for coming by and for patiently waiting for your comment to be published. Have a delightful week, dear friend Cathy!

    2. Hello Tom,

I can't believe it's mid-week already. I appreciate you stopping by this morning for the conclusion of my Maine photo memories series. You've such a trooper dooper to stick with me for weeks!

I don't know what to think of all the craziness going on with both blogger and WP but it happens. I'm glad you things straightened out after your post vanished. My head is spinning so I don't recall if I remember my comment showing up after I hit published now but I'm happy you found it.

I go back to the dentist today to get my new bridge seated, I hope. I'm a bit worried with that side since I have some discomfort if I chew on that side. I'll soon enough find out if it's okay.

I'll let you get back to your busy days and I know it's just that BUSY. Have a wildly wonderful Wednesday and remember don't knock yourself out to make it to my place. Your things come first! TTFN, my good friend!

    3. Hi, Cathy!

I'm back from my appointments and errands and taking a break from packing. I am delighted to see that you came to visit Shady's Place while I was away.

Yessum, it was a pleasure to travel with you these last few weeks and see the scenic wonders of Maine and New Hampshire. I truly believe those pictures taken on the last morning at the cove were the most stunning of all.

Like you, I am growing increasingly frustrated by all of the technical glitches involved in blogging, especially in recent months. I am encountering problems leaving comments on other people's blogs, and when I am able to, sometimes they vanish. Comments left by you and several other friends on my site have been swept away to the spam folder. I even found one of my own replies in the spam bin the other day! Can you believe it? Somebody must be feeding the gremlins after midnight. :) On top of that, YouTube routinely removes great songs and videos that I am eager to share with friends like you. Sometimes the videos are removed while the post in which they are embedded is still running live on the front page. It's discouraging.

For all of the above reasons and more, I need to let you know that this will be a transitional year for me and for Shady's Place. I will be reducing my blog presence, posting less frequently and visiting the blogs of others less frequently. With so much to do, and Mrs. Shady constantly on the warpath complaining that I spend too much time blogging, I need to make some big changes. They will probably happen when I return from my long hiatus this fall.

I hope your trip to the dentist yielded good news about what can be done to help you. I hope he doesn't repeat his instruction that you should avoid those yummy donuts you love. :)

You wrote: << and remember don't knock yourself out to make it to my place. Your things come first! >>

If there is one friend whom I don't mind knocking myself out for, it's you, Cathy. You have been steadfast and unwavering in your support, truly a loyal and faithful friend the better part of ten years now. Nurturing and maintaining friendships like ours IS my thing.

Thank you again for your kind follow-up visit and cheery comment, dear friend Cathy!

  5. I love your contests and I'm usually very bad at them. This time was better, I guess #1 and #2. I didn't recognize the third one until I played it. I really liked that song. I was 9 years old when it came out, but I knew all the words and sang along. Lol. I loved the Mamas and Papas from the first time I heard them, just like you. They were so terrific. "Words of Love" was wonderful, but "California Dreaming" was always my favorite. I felt sorry for all the teens who didn't live where I lived. Great weather and great beaches.

I have never heard the song, "Call Me," sung by Carl Dobkins. He had a nice voice, but of course, I liked Petula Clark's rendition better. She was also one of my favorite singers. Very fun listening to these iconic songs, Shady. I think if you re-named your series, "Virgin Call Girls" it might make it past the censors. I'm sorry few people saw it, I hope some more do and come on over.

    1. Hi, Belle!

I'm so happy you came down for the launch of Call Girls, dear sister friend. Thank you very much!

When all is said and done, I will be offering three different series that challenge you to play the music trivia game Name That Tune. In each series and every game, I will include three songs. Two should be easy to guess, especially for people born during the post-WWII baby boom. One song will be harder for most people to guess. You are the second friend to state that you didn't know #3 until you started playing it. I had forgotten all about the golden oldie until I came across it recently on YouTube. This video brings it back alive in brilliant remastered stereo, sounding better than we ever heard it back then. I'm delighted that you agree it's a great song, and thank you for sharing that you enjoyed singing along when you were a girl.

Yessum, in a short period of time, The Mamas And The Papas recorded a wealth of excellent sunshine pop nuggets, including the A and B sides of their singles and album tracks that were not issued as singles. To correct you if I may, it was your LA-based neighbor - singer and guitarist Chris Montez, who had a hit with song #2 - "Call Me," - while Carl Dobkins did song #3 - "Open Book." At one point in my record collecting career, I owned all three of Chris Montez's biggest hits: "Let's Dance," "The More I See You" and "Call Me." Do you remember those other two songs I just mentioned?

So, to sum it up, most people will be able to guess one or two of the song titles in each round, but the third will be more challenging. As you see, I will often post a high quality cover version of a mystery song rather than the original hit by the original artist. This gives me an opportunity to present material that has never before appeared on either of my blogs.

Yessum, Call Girls is a series that I might have difficulty getting published, and it might not get picked up by search engines that feed blog reading lists. I think Virgin Call Girls makes it sound even more X-rated. :) I think what I will do is go around and personally notify all of my regular friends and followers each time I publish a volume of this series so that they'll know to look for it.

Thank you again for your kind visit and delightful comments, Belle. I'm thrilled that you had fun playing Name That Tune with The Call Girls. Enjoy the rest of your week, my great sister friend, and please join me for my annual tribute to Margaret Schneider - The Oldest Living Dell Rat - in my next post starting Friday!

  6. You had me stumped, dear friend. I will wear my dunce cap in the corner, with shame.

Sorry for the absence. I was working the election mail in ballots last week, then working two jobs, I was exhausted. David starts his new full-time job soon, so we've been spending a lot of time together too.

    Have a great week.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I'm thinking of calling you "Casper," dear friend, because you've been ghosting me something awful. :) Welcome back to Shady's Place for the start of yet another new series and another chance to bust your brain playing Name That Tune.

Oh NO! You flunked the quiz and need to wear the dunce cap? Sorry, Jess. You will need to take turns wearing it with friend Mary, because she didn't know any of the songs either. These three songs are all major hits, important for someone your age to know if you want to have a broad education about popular music of the mid 20th century. They are the kind of oldies you're likely to hear played on the sound system at that nostalgic restaurant you guys visited recently.

Thanks again for being here for the launch of "Call Girls," dear friend JM. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  7. Well, I am wearing the musical dunce cap as I got zip...hahaaa. I love these call girls who are all good call girls not the other kind:). This was at a sweeter time wasn't it? I enjoyed the music and knew all of them which always surprises me. Hope you are keeping well. Take care.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Welcome in, dear friend! Seems like we both have blog gremlins working overtime to spoil our fun. As you know, my comment disappeared from your BBC site shortly after I submitted it this morning. (I see that you found and restored it, so thank you for that!) Meanwhile, I just found your comment in my spam folder. I wish I knew what's going on. It's upsetting that we can't accomplish these simple back and forth exchanges without constantly encountering problems. Anyway, I am very happy to see you, and thanks a lot for making time for a visit.

WHAT????? You need to don the dreaded dunce cap after playing Name That Tune? I thought for sure the clues and lyrics would lead you to guess the Motown classic "Dancing In The Street" and the title that refers to two different songs - "Call Me." In the end, after clicking to play the songs, you knew all three, and that pleases me.

Yessum, this series will be loaded with images of vintage women. Some are photographs and others are cartoon illustrations. They all remind us of a simpler life and time. I'm delighted that you appreciate this new Name That Tune series starring your Hostesses With the Mostesses - The Call Girls.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend BB. I'll be back over to see you tamale, sitting in the balcony-- "At The Movies!"

  8. Well this was fun! I got 2 of the 3. I have not heard My Heart is an Open Book before. I'm sorry I didn't get to this before we went away but the 20th is our anniversary (39 years this year!) and we left for Vegas on the 21st so I was a bit busy. I look forward to the next edition of Call Girls! I'm popping over to the next of your posts now my friend!

    1. Hi, Janet!

Welcome back to Shady's Place, dear friend! I see that you gave me two comments for the price of one today. :) I appreciate you taking the time to check out the post you missed. (FYI - my blog gremlins stole your comment and hid in in the spam folder and I just now found it!) I also want to take this opportunity to wish you and Bill a happy 39th anniversary. I hope you guys had fun in Lost Wages.

Turning to The Call Girls and their version of Name That Tune, I'm delighted that you correctly guessed 2 out of 3 songs, the same score as several other friends who played the game. "Open Book" was a biggie in my neck of the woods, but I am sensing that it wasn't as well known or heavily played on the radio in other parts of the country. That said, my friend Belle (above) who spent her youth in California's Inland Empire, commented that she remembered the song from childhood as soon as she started playing it.

I'm delighted that you got a kick out of my new series. Believe it or not, Blogger.com deleted my post minutes after it was published, because the title "Call Girls" sent up flags that it might be a XXX-rated post. :) Fortunately, they allowed me to file an appeal, and soon thereafter, it was republished. I hope this doesn't happen with every volume of the series!

Thank you again for coming, dear friend Janet. Now I'll click over to my current post and read your comment there.
