"Dreams" - Fleetwood Mac cover
by Lanie Gardner (Oct. 2020)
You just witnessed the turning point in a young
woman's life... the moment a star was born.
Posted on YouTube last fall, Lanie Gardner's seemingly casual cover
of the 1977 Fleetwood Mac hit "Dreams" blew up, went viral, and has
since been viewed more than 50 million times across social media.
The performance landed the 21 year old Nashville-based artist a
recording contract, placing her on the verge of super stardom.
Upon seeing Lanie's video for the first time, Fleetwood Mac
leader and co-founder Mick Fleetwood exclaimed that he
was “absolutely blown away." So am I. Remember her
name - Lanie Gardner - because she's going places.
Some say Lanie's awesome cover of "Rumors"
is the greatest cover of that or any other
song ever made!
Hi, I'm Dr. Rick, the Dr. Phil-type tough-love mentor from the
Progressive Insurance commercials. Thanks for attending my
"Un-Become Your Parents" seminar here at Shady's Place.
Copies of my book are available for purchase at the back of the room.
As an author, lecturer and self-help guru, I will teach you about
parentamorphosis - the phenomenon of turning into your parents
when you reach a certain age. You find yourself talking like them,
acting like them and adopting their old fashioned values and attitudes.
My job is to educate and empower you, to support you in
overcoming the aging process. One way is to bring you up
to speed so that you can function in today's high-tech world.
You're at the movies and need to silence your phone.
Can't find that button? It's right up here. Everybody has one.
Another thing. When we're texting, we don't hunt
and peck with our index finger. It's all in the thumbs.
And your
computer mouse?
Guess what ---
You don't need
to name it.
In my course you will learn the latest words
and terms commonly used on social media.
Nope. Nope. Nope. Not even close. It's pronounced "QAnon."
Say it with me: "Q-an-on." It's a thing. Look it up.
I will also help save you from becoming your parents by
playing modern covers of boomer era hits like the one
you just listened to-- "Rumors" by Lanie Gardner.
you'll be "Rick-Rolled" - confident, bursting with energy,
vigor and vitality and feeling like a kid again.
Are you ready to get Rick-Rolled?
I can't hear you!
I CAN'T HEAR YOU!
Yeah - okay, that's more like it. Let's do this!
You met Ukrainian zinger Victory Vizhanska last year
doing a song in Shady's Best of the Quarantunes.
Today the scarlet-haired YouTube star is back, covering an oldie but goody
reminiscent of the Swing Era of the 1930s and 40s. Here's Vicky V retro-
rockin' her version of Christina Aquilera's "Candyman!"

Putting a fresh spin on "Candyman," the 2007 hit by Christina Aguilera,
that was Ukraine's singing sweetheart Victory Vizhanska starring in a
video released this month. Listen up. If you want to avoid becoming
your parents, you need to remember that when young people today
refer to old school recording artists, they're talking about Britney
Spears, Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, J-Lo
and Christina Aguilera -- not Perry Como.
Dr. Rick with a reminder that
you are not your parents...
and getting Rick-Rolled
in my musical seminar is
how you can stay young.
Written by Bruce Springsteen and

In seminar speak, it's called being Rick-Rolled.
In 1958 when your parents (or grandparents) were young,
the Sheboygan, Wisconsin, female quartet The Chordettes
scored a #2 charting hit with "Lollipop." The song was
covered in 2017 by the vocal trio The Candy Girls.

band recently released their own sweet cover.

#Rick-Rolled
Good morning Shady! Just sitting on the deck caching up with you. I'm sorry I missed your Father's day tribute to John and I had to go back and listen to that sweet Father's day song from the Donna Reed show. Always brings tears! Today's post was so fun.I love Dr. Rick commercials! When my son was here visiting a few weeks ago he said he was doing something when a kid piped up and said:"hey Boomer, that's not how it's done"...he said "I'm not a Boomer!" I guess that's the new way of insulting his generation. Or maybe he's becoming his parents! I love the covers of the songs from my generation. Who doesn't love a little lollipop 🍭? Who hasn't had to make up their minds? I really liked Lani Gardner. I can see why she's a hit. It's funny how a little social media can soar you to the top when others struggle to make it big. Well, from one proud to be a Boomer to another...have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteCongratulations, dear friend!
a) You're the Early Bird!
b) You've been Rick-Rolled! :)
I'm excited to see you, YaYa, and glad you checked back to my annual Donna Reed post and enjoyed Paul Petersen's song "My Dad."
I am also pleased that you know who Dr. Rick is. Believe it or nuts, Mrs. Shady's daughter never saw this series of commercials for Progressive Insurance and drew a blank when we mentioned Dr. Rick to her.
I'm also happy that you liked the modern covers of Boomer oldies. Isn't Lanie Gardner something? The first time I saw that video, I could hardly believe the smooth, sultry sound coming from the young lady's throat. She sat there casually in her room and just nailed it, resulting in 50 million views and a recording contract. Glad you enjoyed the Bea X 3 trio singing "Lollipop," another standout video production from the gang at Andrei Cerbu's Garage in Jassy, Romania.
I was going to say I hope Dr. Rick saved you from becoming your parents. However, in your case, becoming your parents wouldn't be a bad thing at all. They were both fine people.
Thank you again for joining the fun, dear friend YaYa. I hope you are well and in good spirits. Take care and enjoy the rest of the week!
Hi Dr. Rick and Shady! I don't like to think I might become my parents, because I don't think they became their parents! My parents were music lovers and kept up with the new trends (even if they didn't like all of the genres).
ReplyDeleteSeeing John Sebastian was pretty fun, and the MonaLisa twins did a great job adding life to the former "folksey"song.
I didn't really recognize the "Candyman" song by Christina Aguilera, so I have to say it belongs to the cute Victory V. I like the video and her energy-I would not have thought Christina sang it.
I like the Patti Smith group, although I don't know all of their stuff. I do recall "Because The Night"...being so good by her. The Classic Rock Show is so good, as Shady has featured them previously and they do a fantastic job on this song! They are such great musicians, and Jess is GOOD! Great cover!
"Spooky" by the Classics IV was always a favorite of mine, even though it's a little corny. I like the dynamics of the song, and the way they try to add a bit of eeriness to it. I wasn't aware Dusty Springfield did the song, so I listened to a short sampling of it and her voice is so nice, she pulled it off! This is a great cover by Allison Young. She is pretty and talented.
Royston Calder really gets with it on "Turn To Stone"! Again, I wouldn't have associated the song with ELO since I don't know all of their hits.
"Lollipop" is an oldie, but I was around to sing the song with my sister and friends! Great job by Bea-x-3! It's so much fun harmonizing with yourself, and she truly pulled it off with different looks. I dubbed in a 3-part harmony to "At The Hop" with Karo, and sadly we never finished that song either. But, Karo was so amazed that I could harmonize with myself-I could do it in my head. I never had a great solo voice, but I always back up with the harmony, haha!
A fun post you guys! I'm glad I was able to swing by early, as I have plenty to do today. It's a bit cloudy out, so we may get some rain...if so, I'll share and try to send some your way, Shady! Have a great week, dear friend!
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteYou're the runner-up in the race to get Rick-Rolled, dear friend! Thanks for coming so early and for another fantastic comment.
It's interesting that your folks kept up with the latest trends in music even if they didn't like all of the evolving subgenres. I think that's pretty rare. My mom and dad were stuck in the 30s, 40s and early 50s and didn't pay much attention to the music I grew up with. My mother seemed to hate 99% of the songs that were popular with my generation.
Yessum, it was a hoot to see Lovin' Spoonful leader John Sebastian singing one of his band's 60s hits along with the MonaLisa Twins. The musical Twins will be back with more great covers in future posts, so stick around.
I'm thrilled that you liked Ukrainian sweetie Vicky V's roller skating cover of "Candyman." Yessum, the single was a #25 charting hit for pop singing star Christina Aquilera early in 2007. The elaborate retro style music video, shot in an airport hangar, was the major draw, and is now nearing 1 million views on YouTube. I posted the vid a few years ago on my old SDMM blog. See if you remember it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ScjucUV8v0
Jess Harwood is another very gifted singer. Clearly the UK audience appreciated her performance of "Because The Night" as she fronted The Classic Rock Show. Unfortunately the pandemic sidelined the world class cover band in 2020. Hopefully they are back to booking live shows this year.
Nashville singer and musician Allison Young is yet another recent discovery of mine, and I am very excited over her voice and talent. I'm glad you appreciated her take on Dennis Yost's "Spooky."
So happy that you enjoyed what musician/production wizard Andrei Cerbu and his versatile zinger Beatrice Florea cooked up in their studio in Jassy, Romania - a wonderful cover of The Chordettes hit "Lollipop." You have told me before about your unfinished recording studio collaborations with Karo. I wish you could have completed "At The Hop," because I'd love to hear your three-part harmony. I too would be amazed that you could do it in your head.
We are getting a little rain each day now, so the lawns are looking better than they were. If you can send more rain our way, we'll be grateful.
I'm excited that you got so much enjoyment out of Dr. Rick's sneak preview. Stay tuned, because he'll be back to get you Rick-Rolled when his new series continues here at Shady's Place. I also hope you can stop in and check out another sneak preview, Bud's Budding Blossoms, in my next post next Tuesday. Until then, I wish you and Scootie well through the rest of your week and hope you both have a nice weekend.
Thanks again for coming and take care, dear friend Suzanne!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteFrom the first to the last cover, I was enthralled by the young talent...okay the fellas who did cover songs aren't exactly young but they were just as awesome. Jess Harwood did an amazing job on "Because the Nights". I got such a kick out of watching John with the twins. Is it me or do you think Beatrice Florea resembles a young Madeline Stowe? I love this new series and will look forward to more lessons by Dr. Rick. Have a songsational day, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteThanks for dropping in to get Rick-Rolled, dear friend! :)
It delights me to know you appreciate this new Shady's Place series hosted by Dr. Rick, the Dr. Phil-type mentor and tough love motivational guru from the wildly popular Progesssive Insurance ad campaign. Mrs. Shady and I giggle with glee every time one of Rick's TV spots comes on.
Yessum, you and I are both discovering a ton of talent among today's young people. During my first few years of blogging, I focused almost entirely on posting the original hits of my youth and the Shady Dell and hesitated to deviate from that formula. It wasn't until recently that I started loosening up and posting modern covers of the oldies on a regular basis. I figured it's about time I catch up with you, a leader in introducing today's emerging mewsic makers on CAAC.
Yessum, Jess Harwood impresses the devil out of me. I suspected you'd know and like her cover of "Because The Night," a rock hit from your younger years in the 70s. Now that you mention it, raven haired beauty Beatrice Florea does look a little like Madeleine Stowe. Beatrice always sings with zest and joy, and she's one of the most popular artists in Andrei Cerbu's company of rising stars way over there in Romania.
A while back, Robert W. got you Morganized. Today you got Rick-Rolled. I'm so glad you had fun and enjoyed the show. Thanks again for swinging by, dear friend Cathy. I'll be seeing you tamale at your place!
Tom,
DeleteI'm glad you can see the Madeline Stowe resemblance in Beatrice. I'm looking forward to future editions with Dr. Rick. By the way, I love those Progressive Insurance Company ads. :D
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteThanks for returning to chat, dear friend! I just got back home from a doctor appointment (1 hour round trip) and have an interesting tidbit for you. You know how much I enjoyed your A to Z series featuring sketches of characters from Walt Disney's The Little Mermaid. I was surprised and delighted to find that animated feature playing this morning on the TV in the doctor's waiting room! Every time a different character appeared on the screen, I thought of you and the drawings you made for your series. :)
I'm happy to know you are familiar with the Dr. Rick ad campaign and that you love watching those Progressive commercials. Thanks for coming back to get Rick-Rolled a second time and have a wonderful day, dear friend Cathy!
Hello Shady who is helping us breathe easier and not let stress get in our way. That first girl singing the Fleetwood Mac song is amazing!!! I like the red haired gal with the naughty Cherry Pop song. I have that CD. Because The Night is one of my favourites and I forgot about it until I heard it here. They did a great job and so did the twins with the "old man" who is so cool. Love Lollipop with these cute girls but my love is ELO. I have many of their albums and he does a great rendition of Turn To Stone. Spooky is another song I have forgotten but love. Great songs to listen to....Now I am off to write about your dad away from home.
ReplyDeleteHi again, dear Birgit!
DeleteYessum, I saw your comment on my previous post honoring John Ettline on Father's Day. Thanks for doing double duty! Your comments are always greatly appreciated.
I'm delighted that you share my enthusiasm for North Carolina native and current Nashville resident Lanie Gardner. Millions of other people agree with us. Lanie's impromptu homemade video, apparently recorded at home in her bedroom, went viral last fall and helped people all over the world forget about that other virus for a while. I love how she casually drinks cranberry juice at the start of the vid, and then proceeds to turn in one of the greatest cover performances of all time, truly one of the great moments in music history.
I am also happy that you give thumbs up to "scarlet fever" gal Victory V, the singing sweetheart of Ukraine, for her roller skatin' cover of Christina Aguilera's hit "Candyman." It won me over big time!
I'm pleased that you also enjoyed The Classic Rock Show feat. lead singer Jess Harwood, John Sebastian collaborating with the MonaLisa Twins, Romanian cutie Bea Florea appearing as all three members of a pop trio on "Lollipop," Englishman Royston Calder doing his more than capable cover of the ELO hit "Turn To Stone," and my second featured Nashville songstress, Allison Young, covering The Classics IV hit "Spooky," in this case, covering the cover by Brit girl Dusty Springfield.
I'm thrilled that you got so much enjoyment from Dr. Rick's lineup of 21st century artists. He'll be back with more before you can say "Rick-Rolled," so stay tuned. Thanks again for your kind visit and comments, dear friend BB!
Well, well, well, I think I was turning into my parents as young as 8! These are some of my favourites and the covers are just amazing. These young artists did an amazing job!
ReplyDeleteAndrei Corbeau is my favourite and he always gets an amazing group together. "Lollipop" was no exception. Lanie Gardner almost sounded like Stevie Nicks! She was spot on! Yes sir, I will remember Lanie Gardner and keep my ears opened. She's going to be the next big thing. Yay her!
I didn't realize that Springsteen helped with "Because the Night." That is one of my favourites too and another young singer that captured the spirit of the leading woman well. I loved all these covers and you had me grooving this morning.
I've sort of developed a little squish on someone and well, I'm in that zone and these songs are right there with me. I'm going to listen again!
Also, thanks for the laughs, Shady! These commercials always brought a smile to my face and I'm so glad you'll be doing a series I can also laugh along with!
Happy Thankful Thursday!
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteConsider yourself Rick-Rolled, dear friend, and thanks a lot for dropping by!
I'm happy you are familiar with this ad campaign for Progressive Insurance starring actor Bill Glass as the iconic "Parenta-Life" coach Dr. Rick. I am also pleased that you enjoyed the tuneage Dr. Rick introduced in this first edition of his new Shady's Place series.
I love that viral Lanie Gardner vid! How could Lanie have known that day last October when she sat on her bed, swigged Ocean Spray and casually sang her cover of Stevie Nicks' "Dreams," that the dang thing would catch on like wildfire, resulting in 50 million views on social media, a management deal with Jonas Group Entertainment (founded by the father of The Jonas Brothers), and a label deal with Republic Records? Lanie endears herself to fans by acting strange and nerdy, as if her amazing covers of Fleetwood Mac and other artists aren't a big deal. They are!
I'm also pleased that I was able to get you hooked on The Smokin' Dudes in Andrei Cerbu's garage, located in Jassy, Romania, the country's second largest city. Beatrice Florea is a fan favorite, and her three-character cover of "Lollipop" is a sweet treat.
Glad you also give thumbs up to Jess Harwood, a singer/songwriter from Blackpool, UK, who fronted The Classic Rock Show on the Patti Smith cover.
Thanks again for coming to get yourself good and Rock-Rolled, dear friend JM. Have a happy and Thankful Thursday!
Hi Shady,
DeleteI got rick-rolled again today! ;) I needed it, it was a stressful day! I loved singing along and grooving. Maybe next time I go roller skating, I'll listen to this playlist. It'll be good for my soul.
Isn't it amazing that when we think something isn't good enough that it turns out to be the most popular thing and takes off like wildfire? Lanie deserves it - she's amazing. I might have to check out her YouTube channel, I'm curious to hear more!
I have an interview Wednesday afternoon, then another interview next Wednesday. I will be prepping and with the prepping, your playlists really help with the nerves. I got this!
Have a great Monday evening, dear friend!
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteFor some people, being Rick-Rolled once simply isn't enough. I'm happy that you returned to get R-R'd a second time, dear friend! :)
On her YouTube channel, Lanie Gardner covers another Stevie Nicks song and another big Fleetwood Mac hit - "Rhiannon." As I see it, expectations are running high that Lanie will be able to deliver on the promise of her stellar "Dreams" performance. I wouldn't want that much pressure heaped on me but, if anybody can rise to it, Lanie can.
I'm happy to learn that you have a couple of interviews coming up. If Dr. Rick's TED Talk musical seminar helps you prepare, then so be it.
Thanks again for dropping in for a visit and for your cheery comments, dear friend JM!
Hello good buddy. I absolutely love those commercials by Dr. Rick. So funny. I see my husband in a lot of them! The cover of "Dreams" by Lanie Gardner is very good and since Stevie Nicks is my muse, that's high praise from me. Most times I can't even listen another version. Spooky was the perfect song for this full moon evening. Hope you have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteHi, Janet!
DeleteThanks for coming all the way across the U.S.A. to get Rick-Rolled, dear friend! :) I'm happy to learn that you are a fan of Dr. Rick, an iconic character who has become as popular as Progressive Flo, thanks to his series of "Un-Becoming Your Parents" TV commercials.
Thanks for singling out the two Nashville-based songbirds in Dr. Rick's musical seminar, namely Lanie Gardner and Allison Young. I was thrilled to discover both of those young women a few weeks ago and couldn't wait to plug their songs into a post. If Lanie's cool, calm and collected cover of "Dreams" earned a favorable nod from you, the President of the Stevie Nicks Fan Club, that's really saying something.
Will my buddy Benny be baying at the Strawberry Moon tonight? :) Either way, please tell him Shady says woof. Thanks again for joining the fun with Dr. Rick, dear friend Janet. Consider yourself Rick-Rolled and enjoy the rest of your week and weekend!
Wow, that first video with the Fleetwood Mac cover is amazing. She definitely deserved to get a recording contract.
ReplyDeleteYa know, I've been Rick- Rolled way too many times. LOL
While I've never heard Candyman before I thought she did a great job with it.
I love Because The Night. she did a great job on that song. She has a great voice.
The Turn To Stone cover was amazing! I have listened to ELO a lot with Ken.He loved them.
The Spooky cover was so good. It's been forever since I've heard that song.
A friend of mine told me the correct pronunciation of Quinoa is Keen-wa.
I didn't know who Dr. Rick was. Probably because I don't watch a lot of tv and got rid of cable last year. So I just watch Netflix at night now.
Hi, Mary!
DeleteThanks for coming over and for offering these excellent mini-reviews of the song covers, dear friend! How's my buddy Falcor today?
I'm thrilled that you and other readers agree with me and millions of new fans who are amazed by Lanie Gardner's laid back cover of "Dreams." Apparently, Lanie decided on a lark to record her cover of Stevie Nicks and upload it to YouTube. She sat right there in her bedroom dressed casually like she was ready for bed. I love how she makes us wait until she guzzles some cranberry juice cocktail and then she proceeds to sing. The moment she begins, jaws undoubtedly dropped all across the country and around the world. Some say it's the finest cover of any song ever. I'm not about to argue.
Yessum, I saw this as a perfect opportunity to use the term "Rick-Rolled," since it is already familiar to many because of the running Rick Astley social media gag. I'm sorry you never saw this series of Dr. Rick commercials for Progressive. If and when you ever do, I'm sure you will remember this post. :)
The "Candyman" song harks back to the WWII swing era. Ukranian YouTube star Vicky V, dressed in a manner that recalls "Rollergirl," Heather Graham's character in Boogie Nights, does justice to the nostalgic Christina Aguilera hit.
Thank you for mentioning the more than capable cover of "Turn To Stone" laid down by Brit rocker Royston Calder. Glad you also appreciated the cover of Patti Smith's hit "Because The Night" and the cover of the Dennis Yost/Dusty Springfield hit "Spooky."
I'm very pleased that you dug this set of songs presented by Dr. Rick. Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Mary, and enjoy the rest of your week and weekend!
I'm getting a new computer tomorrow. Until then, all these videos look like black-and-white home movies from the 1950s. But that's all right because the audio is still working on this contraption and I can hear everything just fine. And everything sounds just fine. I wonder how many teenagers or twentysomethings even know these are old songs. After all, there was a couple of years hen I was young and thought "Pretty Woman" and "MacArthur Park" were Van Halen and Donna Summers originals.
ReplyDeleteJohn Sebastian is beginning to sound like Joe Cocker.
As always, good post.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for coming over, good buddy!
It's a shame you needed to experience Dr. Rick's first Shady's Place musical seminar in dim black and white. Luckily, although you couldn't see the screen very well, you were able to clearly hear the performances of these younger artists singing the songs of yesteryear. I'm happy to learn that you are getting a new computer today and that you will be getting back up to speed on the blog scene.
As you know, many current YouTube covers are actually covers of covers, and many times the uploader/performer does not trace the song back to its origin and credit the original artist. When I leave a comment, I usually provide the original artist info so that the great singers and musicians of the Boomer era are not forgotten.
Again, I am sorry about your recent computer woes. I know what it's like to rely on a computer that runs on fossil fuels. Thanks for getting yourself Rick-Rolled and have a nice weekend good buddy Kirk!
