Glad to have you back, friend Shady. Here is hoping that all went well for Mrs Shady? Anyway ... So love this post of the covers!!! Especially: Old Time Rock n Roll, Sugar Baby and Take Another Piece Of My Heart. Much love, cat.
ReplyDeleteHi, cat!
DeleteHow are you and Theo doing today, dear friend? Thanks for coming over to check out the batch of Quarantunes presented by the four remaining Sense8 sensates. (You met the first four a few weeks ago.)
I'm pleased that you found no fewer than three Picks to Click in this song set. Those Romanians performing covers in Andrei Cerbu's Garage should be of particular interest to you, and I will be bringing you all their best in future posts. Stay tuned.
Thanks again for coming to visit, dear friend cat!
Still clogging to that tune ... Old Time Rock n Roll that is ... smiles. Love.
DeleteI'm happy to hear it, cat! Tell Theo to put on his dancin' shoes so he can boogie with you. :) Those Romanian singers and musicians are cranking out cover classics at an incredible rate. I will bring you the best of the best.
DeleteSmile and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend cat!
Welcome back, dear friend! I hope that you and Mrs. Shady are doing well. I hope Mrs. Shady had a smooth recovery. I'm so glad to see you back.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love these covers, especially the Andrei and Beatrice ones. I've been listening to his covers for the past week and each video absolutely blows me away. Thank you for introducing me to these fine young performers, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for dropping by as I make my triumphant return to blogging! :)
I'm delighted that you enjoyed this batch of Quarantune covers from artists all around the world. I know you are already tuned in to Andrei Cerbu's Garage. I don't see how that crew can crank out so many slick, professionally produced videos at a rate of nearly one per day. As I am sure you noticed, Andrei has a harem of singing Romanian beauties who perform in a variety of styles, plus his rock/heavy metal band Iron Cross kicks butt. I will be bringing you all their best as time goes by.
Thanks again for joining the gang from Sense8 as they shelter in place in cyberspace. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteI enjoyed the Quarantunes again while I was in the office today. Sense8 created a great playlist that helped get my work done.
All of these covers are amazing and sounds just as good, some even better, than the originals! There's a lot of talent out there and I wish they could all be discovered. This was great fun.
Iron Cross rocks! I was listening to their covers of Nightwish yesterday and oh my, I'm blown away. I love Nightwish, especially the song "Wish I Had An Angel" and Iron Cross just killed it. Amazing!
Have a great Thankful Thursday, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for returning to run through these Quarantunes again, dear friend! As I discovered, once is not enough, because they're that good.
I like Renee & Bob's version of "Fire & Ice" better than the Pat B original, and I prefer Hindley Street's zesty 2020 version of "Physical" to Libby Newton-John's hit single. I'm excited that you are delving into the prolific and terrific Andrei Cerbu and his harem of rocking & rolling female zingers. Andrei is a gifted musician and a shrewd talent scout who knows how to pick 'em. The Iron Cross is looking and sounding better than ever, and now he has a new band called Shut Up & Kiss Me!
Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend JM. Happy TT to you as well!
Happy Labor Day, dear friend!
DeleteI agree with you - those two cover versions stick out to me too. I like them better than the originals! I think Amy and Jo's cover of "Baby Love" is better than the original too, even though I absolutely adore the original!
I'll have to check out Shut Up & Kiss Me. I subscribed to his channel, so I'll have to check it out. That might be the rocking out today, for Labor Day. I can't believe today is the unofficial last day of summer.
Have a great day, dear friend!
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteHappy L.D., dear friend!
Don't cheat and look up the Rubettes original of "Sugar Baby Love" because I will be posting it a week from now. :) Andrei Cerbu's new band Shut Up & Kiss Me! is his way of showcasing and packaging his female singing discoveries Daria Bahrin and Beatrice Floria, while his older band The Iron Cross, features redheaded lead singer Andreea Munteanu. Andreea and Beatrice also have their own YouTube channels that contain great performances. I will bring you their best.
I wish you a safe and restful holiday and a great week, dear friend JM!
This was great fun, Shady. What a combo of songs and covers and stars! I hope you and those you love are well and safe. Thanks for helping to keep up our spirits out here with all this music.
ReplyDeleteHi, Cheryl-Lee!
DeleteThanks for coming to sample the songs in this set of cover Quarantunes from around the world, dear friend!
We are doing AOK, thank you. Dodging hurricanes for the next three months and avoiding the plague are our two main concerns here in Florida. I hope you stay smoke and fire free in your part of the country.
Thanks again for taking a look and a listen, dear friend C-Lee!
Now I have Olivia's song in my head. Along with her, which is a good thing.
ReplyDeleteHi, Alex!
DeleteThanks for dropping in, good buddy! I'll tell you what. That cover band HSCC - The Hindley Street Country Club - turned in the best cover of "Physical" that I've ever heard. IMO it rivals the ONJ original. It's perfect in every way, right down to the coordinated gestures and body language used by the three singing frontwomen. It's simply a remarkable performance. The song has been playing on repeat in my noggin all day long and me likey!
Thanks again for swinging by, good buddy Alex!
I love all the creativity that has gone on while in this COVID lockdown! A lot of artists who normally only perform live are taking to the virtual stage (myself included). Very fun post!
ReplyDeleteHi, Sherry!
DeleteIt's great to see you, dear friend. Thanks for coming to the COVID party!
I agree that some excellent musical performances are being recorded during the worldwide lockdown. These videos from artists and bands all over the globe offer proof. In Australia, the HSCC band performs to an empty room but wows people in far away lands via the reach of YouTube. Orange-haired Ukrainian zinger Victory V sings and dances on streets and in parks in her home town. Aussie Kat Jade, LA's Anne Reburn, Jersey's Bob Gilmartin, Romania's Andrei Cerbu and Amy & Gerry Slattery in the UK produce material from home recording studios. I am blown away by the quality of these recordings.
I'm pleased that you, a veteran musician, weighed in on this post containing homemade Quarantunes that are going "viral" in a very good way Thanks again for coming, dear friend Sherry!
Good evening Shady! I stopped by earlier but couldn't comment until now. Welcome back to blog land! I hope Mrs. Shady is doing well and continues to improve each day. The songs today were fun by those who had to be solo/quarantined. They all did good but I think Beatrice needs a little stronger voice for that song. However the guitarist was pretty darn good! Alyona did a nice cover of Janis Joplin's song. I do love Janis! Victory's hair color was not made by God..just sayin' but her song was a nice tribute to Marilyn. So I guess I'll say my fav was the "Shoop Shoop" song! Too cute and fun! That's all I've got tonight Shady. Arnie got stitches out today and is doing good. I've found out I'm pretty busy these days even without work..wondering when I had time to get stuff done before! At least I'm not falling asleep at 6pm anymore! Ha! Take care and stay safe down there!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteThanks for joining the fun and watching these viral videos, dear friend! Mrs. Shady is well and thanks you for thinking of her.
Andrei Cerbu's Garage, a Romanian home recording studio, cranks out a new video nearly every day. At that speed, there are bound to be a few imperfections in the finished product. In comments on Andrei's channel, I have pointed out that some of his videos are produced at a lower sound level than others and sometimes the female lead vocal is buried too deep in the mix, probably because Andrei wants to make sure his guitar playing gets noticed. I agree that Beatrice's vocal could have and should have been placed higher in the mix. I'm pleased that you enjoyed the Janis Joplin cover performed by Russian zinger Alyona at the sound studio of the Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy here in the states. I think it's safe to say that Victory V uses bright orange dye on her hair as one of her trademark features. I'm delighted that you gave thumbs up to the latest home recording and video created by Anne Reburn and her singing sister clones.
Thanks for giving me an update on my buddy Arnie. I've been thinking about him and wondering how he's doing. Yessum, when you are retired it's amazing how the days get filled to the point that you wonder how you got everything done while holding down a full time job.
Thank you again for your kind visit and comments, dear friend YaYa. Enjoy the rest of your week!
I either never saw or don't remember a TV series called Smash, so "I Never Met A Wolf Who Didn't Live To Howl" is completely new to me, but I can't imagine the original is much better than Victory Vizhanska's cover. She was fantastic! Though with that combination of rock and swing, she reminds me less of Marilyn Monroe and more of 1970s Bette Midler.
ReplyDeleteI suspect the rock vs. disco wars of a generation or so ago is basically lost on young Beatrice Florea (despite her protests to the contrary, I think you probably COULD get her out on the floor) and she doesn't really have the vocal power to put Segar's song over (unless, as you said to yaya, it has something to do with the arrangement) but her enthusiasm kind of did it for me anyway. She really seems to be enjoying herself.
Renee Savoy Willoughby's video would make a good commercial for Nair. But seriously, she sounds enough like Pat Benatar, but not too much like Pat Benatar, to make the song both her own as well as a tribute to the leading lady of early '80s rock.
Finally, that big dude really did impress me on "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". He had to be channeling Marvin Gaye there (or else I just haven't heard the song in a while and my memory's playing tricks on me.)
That's all I got. Welcome back.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteIt's great to see you, good buddy! Thanks for coming by and experiencing this play list of homemade song covers presented by "The August 8th Cluster" - the sensates from the sci-fi TV series Sense8. I highly recommend the show.
I'm happy that you commented on artists that were not mentioned in remarks made by other friends. Carrot top Victory V from Ukraine is part singer - part actress. She has been performing since a very early age and played Marilyn Monroe on stage at the age of nine. I'm delighted to know that you liked her free spirited performance as she cavorted around her Ukranian neighborhood. If you think Vicky reminds you of Bette Midler, then I strongly urge you to watch the Netflix original TV series The Politician. Bette Midler is joined in the cast by veteran actresses Judith Light, Gwyneth Paltrow and January Jones along with a group of exciting young newcomers. The Politician is a cleverly written series that plays through its two seasons (so far) like a dark comedy feature film.
Beatrice Florea might not have the vocal power to belt a song, but Andrei Cerbu or his sound engineer could fix it in the mix if he chose to do so. I think Andrei likes his guitar to be prominently featured in every video and sometimes the instrumental backing overpowers the lead vocal. Clearly English is a second or third language for Bea and the other up-and-coming Romanian singers and musicians that produce material in Andrei's Garage, and yet they do a great job of pronouncing the words as they cover American rock & roll standards, classic rock, glam rock/metal and The Beatles.
I'm glad you singled out Renee Willoughby. To me, her rendition of the Pat Benatar hit "Fire & Ice" is the most exciting find of the entire post. I searched YouTube for more of Renee's performances and found clips of her through the years fronting wedding and niteclub party bands in Jersey and New York. Renee is a wonderful, versatile singer, and her rendition of "Fire & Ice" accompanied very capably by Bob Gilmartin, simply rocks. The audio on their clip is a little low, but if you crank it up (WAY UP) and listen again, you will definitely hear its greatness. I have listened to Renee's cover some two dozen times by now and it always thrills me.
I also totally agree that Michael Bates channels Marvin Gaye as he and Kat Jade do that duet made famous by Marvin & Tammi. Kat is also the real deal, a white Aussie girl who sings American soul authentically. No wonder she made the cut and appeared on the Australian version of The Voice.
Thanks again for joining the fun, traveling around the world with the sensates and weighing in on the various artists you encountered along the way. Enjoy the rest of your week, good buddy Kirk!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteWelcome back to Blogosphere, my friend! Yesterday I was a bit preoccupied with playing catch up and linking up with my routine Wednesday's circles, then I got slammed with some things on my to-do list.
I'm here now! This morning's covered song titles I am familiar with all of them but one, "Sugar Baby Love". In fact, the father/daughter duet might be my favorite artists in your line up. Renee did a nice rendition of "Fire & Ice" and I was impressed with Kat's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". The first gal in the group Hindley Street Club who began the cover "Physical" reminds me a little of ONJ's voice right up until she inserted a that low growl vocals which I didn't care for. Singers, especially women seem to showcase that sound way too much. I find that it doesn't offer any thing to the song and often takes away from my experience. Just sing already and forget the vocal theatrics I say! Otherwise, I really enjoyed your featured covered artists and their song choices. Have a Sense-8-ational day, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteI'm happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for dropping by to see and hear what the Sense8 sensates had in store for you as they spanned the globe in search of mewsical talent. I think they found an abundance of it!
I'm surprised you don't know the song "Sugar Baby Love" because it is more recent than some of the others, a song that was a hit on the radio when you were around age 10 or 11. Don't look it up on YouTube because I have the original Rubettes version coming up in another post a couple of weeks from now. When you hear it at that time you might remember it.
I'm tickled that you appreciate Brit girl Amy Slattery and her dad Gerry performing that song in their back yard to an audience consisting of garden gnomes. :)
Renee and Kat are two recent discoveries. Both female vocalists are the real deal, Jersey girl Renee with rock chick cred and Aussie Kat with blue-eyed soul to spare.
I get what you are saying about that HSCC singer. Her name is Nikki Heuskes and she is the primary lead zinger for the band, a big fan favorite. Sometimes when a female singer uses the gimmick of adding that husky growl to her voice it detracts and reminds us that we are watching a wedding, party or nightclub cover band instead of the original artist. That said, I think this HSCC cover of "Physical" is one of their greatest performances and one of my three Picks to Click for this post, the other two being the songs by Renee & Bob and Kat & Michael.
Thanks again for checking in and checking out the Quarantunes, dear friend Cathy. I'll see you tamale at your place for Friday Sillies!
Welcome back! First, how is your wife? I hope everything turned out well. These people are so talented and I have tyo start off with that gal from Russia covering the Janis Joplin hit. Her voice is so strong and gutsy. You don't expect it from someone so pretty and petite. The 2nd song-No Mountain High Enough, is also wonderful and the voices, especially the guy's, is great. I used to watch Smash and it was one of my favourite shows so this song I know well and she does pretty good but her lip syncing needs improvement. The gal who sing Rock and Roll is such a cutie and so chipper and lends it well to this song even though she is such a perky gal. I also like the Icelandic one...This is so great to listen to all the popular people around the globe. Thanks for sharing this. Take care
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteWelcome back yourself to Shady's Place, dear friend! Mrs. Shady is AOK. Thank you for asking.
I'm glad you like the assortment of artists and bands discovered on the four corners of the world by the gang from Sense8. I'm happy to know you appreciated the Janis Joplin cover belted out by the Russian singer. She's a student of the Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy, a studio and training facility located on the far eastern tip of the big Island of Hawaii. I'm excited to learn that you actually watched the TV series Smash during its short run and therefore know the song performed by orange haired Vicky V. in her Ukrainian hometown. Perky Beatrice Florea is a popular member of guitarist Andrei Cerbu's revolving "harem" of singing beauties who record in his garage studio in Romania.
I'm thrilled that you got so much enjoyment out of the post offering cover songs performed by an international roster of artists. Thanks again for being here this week, dear friend BB. I'll see you soon over at your place. Take care!
So good to have you back, Shady! I hope all went well for Mrs. Shady.
ReplyDeleteI think you know I'm not always a big fan of "covers", but you've shared some pretty good ones here. I was surprised at the Janis Joplin cover. Not bad at all!
Hi, Kelly! (and Pat!!!)
DeleteI'm happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to sample the sounds discovered by the characters from Sense8. They hunted high and low to bring you the best of the Quarantunes, cover versions of songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s, and even one from a 2010s TV show performed by Victoria V of Ukraine.
I'm delighted that you enjoyed the Russian singer's rendition of the 1968 hit by Janis Joplin with her band Big Brother & The Holding Company. Many younger folks don't realize that it was Aretha Franklin's sister Erma who first recorded the song the previous year - a huge hit at my Shady Dell.
Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Kelly, and enjoy the rest of your week!
Welcome back friend, Shady. Hope that all went well with your time off. What a talented bunch of people there are out there making good use of the quarantine. I liked all of those covers. Have to make it short today, I got a new Mac and am busy transferring my important things from the old one. Have to make sure everything is in working order before I send it in for trade-in. Have a spectacular rest of your week!
ReplyDeleteJanet’s Smiles
Hi, Janet!
DeleteHow's is going, dear friend? I hope you are breathing easier these days and that the fire threat in your area has subsided. I've been thinking about you. My other California friend, Cheryl-Lee, needed to flee her home as one of the blazes advanced!
I'm excited to learn that you enjoyed this set of sheltering songs brought to you by gifted singers and musicians around the world.
I'm also thrilled to find out about your new Mac and understand why you want to get busy backing up all your material.
Thanks again for coming to my mask-free COVID party. Please say hello to my buddy Benny for me and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Janet!
Hi Shady!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the “Fire & Ice” cover by Renee and Bob. Their rendition takes a nice bit of edge off the original.
Kat Jade sure-enough has a powerful voice ;-) Michael Bates and crew complete a professional sound for an old-favorite song.
The Rubettes are impressive! I also liked their groupie garden gnomes ;-)
Beatrice and Andrei won’t be in the garage forever with that kind of talent!
Quite a mix there, the iconic Seeger song, the AC/DC tee, and the reference to the movie that taught my grandson how to sock-slide : -)
That minibus driver from Kenya looks rather serious. Alyona is astonishingly good!
Victory’s video is delightful. I don’t recognize the song, but I like it.
Anne Reburn does a terrific cover of the Shoop Shoop Song – you already know I enjoy these clever split-screen-zoom-like productions ;-)
The Hindley Street Country Club is pretty good. I miss Olivia though.
Thanks for sharing your playlist, I enjoyed!
Hi, diedre!
DeleteI'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for taking a look and a listen as four of the characters from Sense8 span the globe to bring you the best of the Quarantunes.
I'm happy that you recognized the greatness of Renee Savoy Willoughby and Bob Gilmartin on that Pat Benatar cover. Ever since I discovered their video a few weeks ago, I have been playing it again and again, turning it up good and loud, and never tiring of it. I am also pleased that you singled out Kat & Michael on their cover of the hit duet originally waxed by Motown greats Marvin & Tammi.
I believe this is the fourth time that I have presented Brit girl Amy Slattery, beginning with a two-part feature hosted by talent scout Chris Griffin on the old blog Shady Dell Music & Memories. Amy and her dad are doing more collaborations lately and I will continue to bring you their best.
Andrei Cerbu's Garage is located in Iași aka Jassy, the second largest city in Romania, on the east side of the country near the border with Moldova. It is there that Andrei and his crew crank out covers of American and Western European hits including plenty of old time rock & roll, singer Beatrice Florea's specialty. Yessum, you just got done showing me that humorous Quarantune recorded by a young woman and her clones. One woman band Anne Reburn does an amazing job of singing all the parts, playing instruments, mixing the audio and editing her videos.
I'm thrilled that you came over and that you enjoyed the COVID party playlist. Thanks again for being here, dear friend diedre, and please take good care of yourself until we meet again!
Nice to have you back and I am glad to read in a comment that your wife is AOK. I am sure you are both relieved that it is all over.
ReplyDeleteI am writing this while I am still listening to the music. What fun! Loved the Pat Benatar cover, and now I am Shoop, Shooping to a song. All this music make me feel young again. Thank you for these moments
Hi, Arleen!
DeleteThanks so much for coming over, dear friend! Mrs. Shady says hello and thank you.
I'm delighted that you are working your way through these very capable covers of 60s, 70s and 80s hits performed by artists around the world. I am especially happy that so many people are appreciating the first video with Renee & Bob's extraordinary version of "Fire & Ice." I like it more than Pat's original! Anne Reburn is an enormously talented young woman - singer, musician, sound mixing engineer and video editor. I've got an entire post devoted to Anne in the pipeline, so stay tuned.
Making you and other friends (and myself) feel young again is my goal. If I managed to do that for you via this post then I am very happy to declare "Mission Accomplished!" :)
Thank you again for spending some time with me in the Shady, dear friend Arleen. Please continue to take good care of yourself and join me for more fun and a sneak preview of another new SPMM radio show coming up in my next post on Tuesday. Until then have a great weekend, special lady!
Hi Shady and Friends! Sorry to be so late, but this "school Marm" is pretty busy right now. Scootie got a half day in school on Friday, and will start full time on Tuesday after Labor Day. I still have plenty of things to do and get!
ReplyDeleteAll of these groups and songs were so great, who can even pick a favorite! That Hindley Street Country Club always delivers! I believe they could ACE any song they pick to perform, each girl has a unique style and the band 'rocks'!
"I Never Met A Wolf Who Didn't Live to Howl"? I'm afraid I will have to pass on this one, Shady! Too much color! "The Shoop Shoop" song is a classic isn't it. This song will always be a favorite for almost all who hear it, and whoever sings the song will be a sure hit! Beatrice and Andrei always deliver, he is still the best on the guitar, and one to be reckoned with.
You know, "Fire and Ice" is one of those "so good" songs. The video is great on this one, and Renee and Bob are over the top on it. This song makes me remember the good romantic movies of the 80's with Molly Ringwold, Andrew McCarthy, Jon Cryer and the group. The guitar playing alone, drums up emotions, giving this one strength and meaning!
There is so much good stuff here, guys! I don't think I ever heard "Sugar Baby Love", and It's not a song I think I would love, but this father and daughter are such a great smooth-working team. These two are precious, and made the song their own, giving me chills!
I know there's more to this post, and it is all great. Alyona does such a good job on "Piece of My Heart". She certainly has her own style, lending it to this fabulous song with Royal Justice.
Again, I apologize for being so late, I actually read this post on the first day, but couldn't stop to comment. Thank you for the great show.
Dear Shady, I hope Mrs. Shady is healing well from her eye procedure. Take care dear friend, see you next time!
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteThanks for popping in to see what the Sense8 sensates are up to, dear friend! I know you've got your hands full preparing Scootie for the school year. I hope he makes a smooth transition and has a good year if not a great one.
I'm delighted that you agree with a couple of my Picks to Click, starting with that Australian cover band HSCC. With three vivacious female lead zingers doing coordinated arm gestures and body language, they nailed "Physical" with a performance that rivals Libby's original. There are a few of the band's songs I don't like as well, but "Physical" might be their very best to date. Another great one is "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," a video the other Sense8 characters brought you a few weeks ago in their salute to diversity.
I'm sorry if Vicky V's neon hair hurt your eyes. :) I suspect that particular shade of orange cannot be found anywhere in nature. :) Glad you and others singled out one woman band Anne Reburn and one of her latest efforts, a cover of "It's In His Kiss (The Shoop Shoop Song)" which was originally recorded in 1963 and early 1964 by at least three different R&B thrushes. The song was first waxed soulfully by Merry Clayton and released in the spring of 1963, a splendid recording. Another great version was recorded by R&B singer Ramona King who released her cover in February, 1964, just after the hitbound version by Betty Everett, the artist Anne officially covered here.
I'm pleased that you gave props to one of the latest offerings from Andrei Cerbu's Garage, the duo of Beatrice and Andrei covering the hit by Bob Seger. Andrei loves to clown around in his videos, and he missed his chance to imitate the iconic Tom Cruise underwear and socks scene from Risky Business.
I am also happy that you agree with me and others on Renee & Bob's iso version of "Fire & Ice." Renee is the real deal and I hope those two collaborate on more song covers.
I'm betting you will know the hit song "Sugar Baby Love" when you hear the Rubettes original. Don't look it up, because I have it embedded in a post coming up less than two weeks from now.
I agree that Russian vocalist Alyona does a great job of imitating Janis on her cover of "Pizza My Heart." However, as a dyed in the wool Dell rat, it is Erma Franklin's original recording of the song that will always be the greatest.
Thank you again for making time for a visit and for your wonderful comments, Suzanne. Mrs. Shady is doing just fine, and she thanks you for mentioning her. Please stay tuned because, coming up next Tuesday, you will meet the star of another TV series who will bring you a sneak preview of her new show coming soon to SPMM Retrosonic Radio. I hope to see you then, dear friend!
