Natalie Teeger's Gotcha Covered with Leonid & Friends!

Hi there, I'm
Natalie Teeger!
As you know, I'm
Adrian Monk's
personal assistant
on the hit TV series
My Mother the Car
Monk.

You might recall my appearance a few years ago on Shady Del Knight's
old blog Shady Dell Music & Memories.  Shady was nice enough
to invite me back as a guest host here at Shady's Place.

I needed to beg, coax and twist Mr. Monk's arm, but he finally agreed
to give me some time off so that I could introduce you to what
just might be the greatest cover band in the world! They're
Leonid & Friends, a Russian tribute band that specializes in
covering the songs of the American supergroup Chicago.

Leonid & Friends have never seen Chicago in person. They learned Chicago's songs
by listening to recordings and watching videos. The Moscow based jazz-rock band
has the uncanny ability to replicate Chicago's complex arrangements note for note.
Listen as they perform "Beginnings," a top 10 hit for Chicago in 1971.

The song you just listened to, "Beginnings" was
originally released as a single at Halloween in
1969 but didn't become a hit until it was re-
released in 1971. Two years later, in the
summer of '73, Chicago scored another
top 10 hit with the song you're hearing
now, "Feelin' Stronger Every Day."

cover by the talented band

Leonid & Friends have the Chicago sound
down pat, but they cover other bands
equally well. Here they do "September,"

Nice job, Natalie. By the
way, in case you haven't
heard... I have my own
rock band. It's called
 The Randy Disher Project.
Hey, if you'd like, I can
get you tickets to our
next show. It's Saturday
afternoon...in my garage.

    1. Hi, Sherry!

Thanks for being the early bird this week, dear friend! I think we were writing comments on each other's posts at the very same moment. :)

I was hoping that you, a great musician, would see this post and listen to the glorious sounds that come from this Russian band. Yessum, it really is nice to hear music that is produced the old fashioned way - by real people playing real instruments. It amazes me how much Leonid & Friends sound like Chicago and match their arrangements note for note.

Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Sherry!

  2. Top of the morning Shady! I'm excited to be a bit earlier than usual. It's been a good July 4th celebration time and having an extra day off has just made it great! I'm glad I stopped by to listen to some of my favorites and you know I would love Chicago! It always amazes me when artists can sing tunes in another language and sound so perfect. This was fun to watch as well as listen. This cover band is exceptional and I hope some day they can go to Chicago..I just wouldn't suggest going there anytime soon. I'll be there on Friday for a celebration of life gathering for Mom but sure won't be going downtown. Anyway, I hope you're staying cool and safe in the hot spot of Covid right now. Bringing songs like this that lift the spirit, bring back memories of my 20s is one way to make me smile! Thanks and have a good week!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

I'm happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over early to see what Adrian Monk's assistant Natalie Teeger has up her sleeve.

It's great news that you got an extra day of rest. Knowing the grueling pace you've been setting most of this year and all the stress and heartache you have endured, you needed and deserved it. I'm thrilled that you appreciate Leonid & Friends as much as Natalie and I do. Yessum, at times you can detect the lead singer's Russian accent, especially the guy who imitates David Clayton-Thomas on that BS&T cover, but other than that, if you close your eyes and listen to those Chicago covers, you'd swear it was the original American band singing and playing. It amazes me that Leonid & Friends never attended a Chicago concert, only listened to their recordings.

I wish you a trouble free journey to Chicago and hope you remain safe and sound while you're there for the celebration of your mother's life. I am eager to learn how it went you get back and write a post about it. Yessum, Florida seems to be the COVID Capital of the World these days. We are increasingly concerned as cases continue to spike day after day.

It makes me happy to make you happy, YaYa. I'm so glad you got a lot of enjoyment out of this tribute band from Russia. Please take good care of yourself and have a safe trip to Chicago and back. I'll be thinking about you, dear friend!

Thanks a lot for coming down on day one, dear kitty friend! I'm pleased to learn that you have a few days off and can stand down from your vigilance on the front line. I'm also glad to know you enjoyed the show put on by the Russian tribute band Leonid & Friends. I'm grateful that Natalie Teeger brought them to my attention. :) I wish I were there to cuddle with Theo Thunderbutt. I'd give him LUBBINS till the cows came home (or until he got bored with me and walked away). :)

Thank you again for your cheery visit, dear friend cat!

    1. Hi, Cheryl-Lee!

Thanks for getting up early to visit and leave a comment, dear friend!

I rarely meet anyone who doesn't appreciate the singing and musicianship of Chicago but, believe it or not, Mrs. Shady told me she thinks they are overrated. I think the naysayers are few and far between when it comes to that great band. I'm pleased that you enjoyed this Russian Chicago soundalike band Leonid & Friends along with presenter Natalie Teeger and the gang from Monk. I heard that The Randy Disher Project just released a "greatest hits" compilation. It all fits on one side of a 45. :)

Dear friend, if you have time, please click back to the previous post and experience my tribute to Diversity. It was a labor of love and I didn't want someone of your stature to miss is. Thank you, dear friend Cheryl-Lee. Take good care of yourself and enjoy the rest of July!

  5. Leonid and Friends are fantastic. They sound more like Chicago than Chicago does these days. The first time I heard "Old Days," I swear I burst into tears: it was absolutely dead-nuts on. Chicago could never do that.

I have both their albums and some of their singles. They also do a cover of The Ides of March's "Vehicle" that Jim Peterik left a comment and said "when I first heard it, I thought it was us!" Read the whole comment, it's amaazing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX8g_JEJol8).

    Thanks for featuring them!

    1. Hi, John!

Welcome back over to Shady's Place, good buddy. I'm excited to see you!

I'm happy to know that you are already familiar with Leonid & Friends. (They're not as good as The Randy Disher Project, but still... :) Seriously I got goosebumps as Leonid & Friends cooked their way through this set of Chicago, EW&F and BS&T songs. I especially liked the way they got rolling on the second half of "Feeling Stronger" and "Stay The Night," but every single performance takes me back to the years when I collected Chicago Transit Authority's vinyl LPs. I agree that on most of these cuts, Leonid & Friends sound more like Chicago than Chicago sounds like Chicago. :) I just listened to their cover of the Ides' "Vehicle" and read Jim's glowing review tagged with "Great God in Heaven, we love you!" That says it all.

Thanks again for joining the fun, good buddy John. Stay healthy and please come back and see us soon here at Shady's Place!

It helps to be a Chicago fan to begin with, and it's good to know you are. So am I!

  7. Hey there Shady! I had heard of Leonid and Friends because I follow John Horton and he is a fan. They are indeed very good. The hubs and I saw Chicago in around 2006 and were so disappointed with their sound we left early. I saw B S & T in the early 70's and Leonid and Friends did a great job on that cover too.

Of course I watched Monk. Loved Natalie. I may have to check the series on Amazon Prime because I missed some of the last few seasons. Have a wonderful weekend my friend!

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks for coming over, dear friend! Yessum, I gathered from John's comment here today that he has introduced Leonid & Friends on his own blog. I'm glad you agree with John, Natalie and me that the Russian band is spot-on with their covers of Chicago and other American groups.

Wow, Janet, I am surprised to learn that Chicago disappointed you when you saw their show in 2006. I wonder how they could let that happen given their millions of fans. Maybe a poor sound system and acoustics at the venue were to blame. You were lucky to see Blood, Sweat & Tears in the early 70s when they were still going strong. In 1985 I attended a solo show in Largo, Florida, put on by their former lead singer David Clayton-Thomas. David still sounded great as ever. After the show I met him and chatted with him over drinks.

Yessum, Mrs. Shady and I recently finished the entire run of Monk on Amazon. We have now seen the whole series three or four times and always enjoy it. I encourage you to catch the seasons you missed. As you probably know Tony S. is now co-starring in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which we also follow and recommend.

Thanks again for coming by, dear friend Janet. Say hello to Benny for me and have fun on your walks!

Thanks for stopping in, dear friend! I'm glad this post filled with great covers of Chicago, EW&F and BS&T will serve as a play list to keep you entertained at the office tomorrow. I could listen to these sensational sounds all day every day. Please remember to wear your mask and wash hands often. The workplace ranks fairly high on the list of places to contract the virus.

Thanks again for visiting, and have a good evening, dear friend JM!

    2. Hi Shady,

So, I gave your soundtrack a listen today while I was at work and WOW! They sound better than the originals. I like their covers on Chicago and EW&F. It's been decades since I heard these songs and I was singing to myself as I was sorting through papers.

Oh yes, I sure did. I don't really feel comfortable about going in once per week, but they are limiting how many people can be in the building. We can't go without permission, so today there were only three others in. It wasn't too bad. I'm hoping I get an adjustment project tomorrow so I won't have to go in... I don't really feel like going in the day before my vacation. Thinking positive vibes.

Have a great Thankful Thursday, dear friend!

I am also pleased that you remember the great recordings of Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire and that you think these covers by Leonid & Friends sound like the originals. I have "Beginnings" stuck in my noggin all day today but I'm not complaining.

Thanks again for stopping in, dear friend JM. Have a nice Friday and a safe and happy weekend!

    6. Hi Shady!

So, I had Saturday in the Park stuck in my head all day and ironically, it appears on a Summer playlist on Amazon music! I know Amazon will come in handy for the bus rides. :)

I'll have to keep Leonid and Friends handy too. I have found that your playlists help the day a bit. Thank you for posting the songs.

So far, it's looking like it'll be scattered storms, and the day that I'm supposed to get tattoo #3, it'll be sunny. My appointment is at 5pm, so I will spend the time beforehand at the beach. The goal is to swim at 10, stay until 1, head back to my Air BNB to clean up, then see if Toast is opened. I couldn't find single apple juice bottles to bring, so I will need to stop at a breakfast/brunch eatery beforehand, have lunch with apple juice. Apple juice helps the skin. After the appointment, I will hopefully meet Jared for dinner.

I'm really excited! Have a happy and safe week too, dear friend.

  9. HI Natalie! I've missed Monk so much, what a fun series! I love Natalie's character and how she copes with Monk's obsessive ways!

Well, I am inclined to agree with your feelings about this band probably being the best cover band in the world. They are so great! I can't even imagine the work they put into these Chicago songs, because they are having so much fun and just roll right along as a pretty tight group.

I only saw Chicago once in the early 70's in concert, and they have always been one of my favorite groups. I have several of their albums, enjoy most of their music. "Beginnings" is one of my favorites, and this band really brought it on, didn't they! I can't even say how good I think they are, musicians just totally have it together, great stage presence for all of the members. I love the brass and the strings group!

Their cover of "September" is so incredible! Is there a group they struggle with to cover? I doubt it.

This is a wonderful post, Natalie. I'm glad Shady got you back here and I look forward to seeing you again!

Great job, Shady! Hope you are well, dear friend! Take care and have a great weekend! ♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

Thanks for dropping in to see what condition Mr. Monk's condition is in, dear friend! :) I'm happy to know that you like the Monk series and his assistant Natalie. As you know, people, mostly men, are still having a debate over which girl was the "it girl" on Gilligan's Island - Ginger or Mary Ann. I and most others liked Mary Ann better. In similar fashion, there are people who enjoyed Monk's first assistant Sharona and those who prefer Natalie. I'm a Natalie admirer. I also enjoyed watching actress Traylor Howard in the sitcoms Boston Common and Two Guys and a Girl. Traylor was born and raised in my part of the country, Orlando, and graduated from Florida State University.

I'm thrilled that your trained musician ears can hear the authentic sound of Chicago coming from these guys (and a girl) from Russia. It is quite amazing, isn't it? I have played all of these pieces several times and find more nuances to appreciate on every pass. Like you I owned those original Chicago albums and played them often. What a refreshing period of music history it was from the mid 60s through early 70s when brassy, horn-driven bands like Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Ides of March ("Vehicle"), The Buckinghams, Crow ("Evil Woman Don't Play Your Games With Me"), The O'Kaysions ("I'm A) Girl Watcher") Archie Bell And The Drells ("Tighten Up"), King Curtis ("Memphis Soul Stew"), and Jr. Walker And The All-Stars ("What Does It Take To Win Your Love") were on the charts, playing on the radio and on our stereo systems.

Chicago purists prefer their early recordings that featured the soulful lead vocals of Terry Kath, nicknamed "The White Ray Charles." Kath died tragically in 1978 when he accidentally shot himself in the head just shy of his 32nd birthday.

You can look up Leonid & Friends YouTube channel and find out which other bands they cover. I have listened to their cover of "Vehicle" by Ides of March and I think it's well worth your time.

I'm so glad you like Natalie Teeger. Don't tell anyone, but Natalie is being groomed to become a Shady Bunch DJ. She will soon be hosting her own radio show on SPMM Retrosonic Radio, so stay tuned!

Thanks again for joining the fun, Suzanne. I hope you and Scootie are AOK and stay well over there. Tune in again next Tuesday for the official debut of "Get Morganized with Robert W. Morgan." Till then take good care of yourself and enjoy the rest of your week and weekend, dear friend!

  10. This is what a band should be and so much now is just synthesized. This is a great cover band that I never heard of...no big surprise. It looks like they made their own sound-proof spot to play these songs. I love the Earth, Wind and Fire song because of that man's voice. The trumpets and violins are so great to listen to. I would tell the one guy to lose the plaid outfit though...too Herb Tarlek:) Have a wonderful day and stay safe!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks for coming down to check out the band Natalie Teeger found for us!

Yessum, this beats "fake" music, doesn't it? I'm excited to know you like the sound (if not the sight) of the Russian ensemble Leonid & Friends. I needed to check those vids to find the guy who reminds you of Herb from WKRP. That does indeed look like one of the jackets Herb wore on the series. :) When L&F runs out of Chicago material, they still have several other great American horn bands to cover. (See my list in the above reply to Suzanne.) The many fine recordings of Blood, Sweat & Tears and Earth, Wind & Fire would keep them busy for years to come.

Thanks again for your visit and kind comment, dear friend BB. Enjoy the rest of your week and stay well!

I'm pleased that you enjoyed these covers of Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears and Earth, Wind & Fire by this Russian tribute band. I agree that on "Spinning Wheel" in particular, which features a different lead singer, you notice the thick accent. The same guy does lead vocals on the Ides of March hit "Vehicle" if you'd care to listen:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX8g_JEJol8

I'm glad to know Chicago is one of your favorite bands. In my late teens and early 20s I owned their first few vinyl albums and played them often.

  13. Tom,

I'm sorry for the late visit. This has been a very upsetting and distracting week. Long story short as I don't all the details, DD#1 and granddaughter were car jacked. They went missing for more than 24 hours. Thankfully God intervene, kept His hand over them and they managed to return home safely on their own accord. DD#1 is in isolation mode after the overwhelming ordeal and isn't talking, texting anyone not even us. Time and patience is what it'll take but she'll come around. Please remember her in your prayers. Our little angel is too young to know what's going on and is healthy, so that's a blessing.

Leonard & Friends are an excellent Chicago cover band. I was blown away by the introduction to this group a few years ago and I'm happy to see your feature of them. If they had new material they could do it Chicago style and I think they'd do equally well as the legendary band. Thanks for sharing a great mewsical distraction, my friend. Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Good lord, Cathy! I am very sorry to learn how bad a week you've had. I never knew anyone who was the victim of a carjacking or anyone who even knew anyone. Is this your daughter up in Maine? And your tiny granddaughter was also involved? I am VERY relieved to know the story had a "happy" ending, if you can call it that, and they made it back to safety unharmed. It must be quite a tale to tell. I know this traumatic experience will stay with your daughter for a long, long time, probably the rest of her life, and on all the rest of your family as well. I am so so sorry, Cathy!

On a lighter (and mewsical) note, I'm glad you enjoyed Leonid & Friends. I assume you were first introduced to this cover band on John H's blog as was friend Janet. I agree that they could write some new songs and perform them in the style of Chicago and the material would be well received.

I will indeed pray for the emotional scars to heal in the wake of this awful ordeal. Thank you for joining me in the midst of all that turmoil. Have a safe and peaceful weekend, dear friend Cathy!

  15. I watched Monk on occasion. I actually preferred Sharona as the assistant/therapist, but, it's like the wise man says, don't ask to renegotiate your contract if your character is not absolutely essential to the show.

Well, Leonid and Friends certainly nailed down Chicago. I'm not sure I'd recognize these as cover songs if you hadn't told us ahead of time.

As for Blood, Sweat, and Tears, there's one song where I COULD tell the difference, but I kind of like "Spinning Wheel" sung with a Russian accent.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Welcome in, good buddy! I'm happy to see you and hope you're having a nice weekend. On the official Shady Del Knight personality preference assessment test, my answers revealed that I am a "Mary Ann - Natalie." May I assume that you, sir, are a "Ginger - Sharona"? :)

You're right, Kirk. When the deep voiced guy takes over lead vocals on "Spinning Wheel" and "Vehicle" (see YouTube) you immediately notice his accent, yet he is a good singer and it doesn't diminish the enjoyment of the song. On the Chicago covers with the other guy on lead, it is very hard to tell the difference between the two bands.

Thanks again for coming over to experience Leonid & Friends with me and Natalie T. Hey, that would make a good song "Me and Natalie T." :) Have a safe and happy week, good buddy Kirk!

Leonid & Friends also has a ton of fans around the world who love to hear them bringing back note for note the original sound of Chicago and other classic soft-rock bands of the period.

Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Robyn, and have a safe and happy week!
