Orange You Glad This Lime is Not a Lemon?

PLEASE WATCH THIS TRAILER.
THEN WE'LL TALK.

Hi, I'm Joyce Martin....

I'm the good girl breaking bad in the
Academy Award winning motion picture

High School Hellcats!

It's not easy being the new girl in school.

At first I felt all alone and insecure.

But then I was approached by Connie, leader of
The Hellcats, the mean girl gang that rules
the school and controls the social scene.

What a great bunch of gals, those Hellcats!
Their hobbies include sassing the teacher...

smoking cigarettes in school...

and I mean anywhere and everywhere
not just in the little girls' room...

and of course, everybody's favorite pastime -
knife-throwing.

I wanted to fit in, so I considered joining
The Hellcats, but there were two problems.
First, Hellcats do not allow their members
to get good grades. My folks would kill me
if I let my GPA slip. Secondly, I can't date
any guy that isn't approved by Connie
and her posse. That made me hesitate
because I am used to playing the field.

For example, before I arrived at Hellcat High, I was involved
with rock 'n' roll star Eddie Cochran who appeared with me in
the juvie delinquent movie Untamed Youth. Eddie also played
guitar on a record I made called "Ting-A-Ling Telephone."

"Ting-A-Ling Telephone" - Yvonne Lime
feat. Eddie Cochran (1957, unreleased)

My next fella
was "Little Joe"
Cartwright...
(Michael Landon)
of Bonanza fame.
 Everything was
fine at first...

Unfortunately...
Little Joe
turned out
to be a wolf.

I even met, worked with and dated Elvis Presley.

As you can see,
I've got the pics
to prove it.

Elvis and I had
chemistry, but it
didn't work out.

His heart belonged to another woman...

...his mom!

Then there was Tim Considine who played Spin Evans on
Spin and Marty, Frank Hardy on The Hardy Boys and
Mike on My Three Sons. We were "just friends."

After that I went to a dance
with teenage idol Ricky Nelson
on his family's television series
Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet.
In the following film clip you can
see shots of me smiling in the
audience as I watch Ricky
perform his top 10 hit
"I Got A Feeling."

"I Got A Feeling" - Ricky Nelson
(Oct./Nov. 1958, highest chart pos.
#10 Hot 100/#15 Cash Box, scene from
Oct. 29, 1958 ep. of The Adventures
of Ozzie And Harriet)

It was ditto with Rick. We parted "just friends." So, as you
can see, I haven't exactly been lucky in love - far from it!

Even so I value my freedom
and I was wary of making a
commitment to The Hellcats.
That's when Connie and the
Cats lured me to a dark,
creepy old abandoned
movie theater on the
poor side of town
and started to apply
big time peer pressure.

Listen up, cupcake.
Me and the other girls
talked it over and we
think you might have
the right stuff to be a
Hellcat. Make up your
mind. Are you in or out?
Just remember one thing,
If you don't belong, you
are nothing and nobody, and you'll find life at
school pretty rough.

I'm sorry I kept you and the other
girls waiting, Connie. I want to
be a Hellcat, I really do. In fact
I've already started honing my
mean girl skills. Why, you'll be
very happy to know that...
just this morning at school,
when no one was looking...
threw caution to the wind
and sniffed copier ink. Then
I snuck behind the gym
and chewed bubblegum -
the proven gateway to
reefer madness.

Determined to have a social life, I gave up dating famous
actors and rock stars and settled for local soda jerk
Mike Landers, but that was a real disaster.

Mike said The Hellcats are bad news and warned me
to stay away from them. I didn't like him telling me
what to do and we argued about it all the time.

When Connie found out I was dating Mike without her
permission, she sent her goon squad to beat him up.

I felt really bad about what happened to Mike...
but there was a silver lining. It brought us closer.

Oh... hi, Connie! No, I'm not having second thoughts.
What's that? I'm invited to an all night gang initiation
slumber party at the dark, creepy abandoned theater?
Sounds neato, and thanks for the invite, but I'm
afraid I can't make it. My folks caught me
reading the Kinsey Reports and I'm
grounded until my wedding day.

Yeah, I know - bummer! Hey Connie, I don't mean to be rude,
but I gotta hang up now. My great grandmother in Siberia
is real sick...yeah, that's the ticket...and my folks will kill
me if I don't keep the line free in case we get "the call."
I'll catch you Monday morning at school, okay? Bye-bye.

If you eavesdropped on
my convo with Connie
just now, you might have
sensed that I was fibbing.
You see, I didn't want her to
know about a school project
I am secretly working on
to earn extra credit and
bring up my grade.

My music history teacher, Shady Del Knight, has agreed to be
my private tutor. He gave me a special assignment that will
enable me to pass his course. Starting next year, Professor
Shady will be giving me the chance to host a new series
at Shady's Place. I asked him what Shady's Place is and
where it's located. He told me it's the name of his blog
and that I can use a computer to find it on the internet.
Shady wrote down the address: tctgyb.blogspot.com.
That's all I can tell you right now because Shady
wants to keep details under wraps until next year.

Imagine me, Joyce Martin, having my very own series!
I was so excited, I wanted to run home, tell my
parents and make them proud.

But then it dawned on me that this is 1958, and I have
no clue what a blog is, or a computer or the internet
for that matter, and our little town has a Main Street
and a other avenues and boulevards, but no
address like tctgyb.blogspot.com.

I went back to the classroom and asked Professor Shady
to explain. He told me to get on my lap top and search the
web. First of all, the web sounds icky, buggy and spidery.
Secondly, for me to "get on my lap top" I'd need to be a
contortionist. I suppose I'll catch on as time goes by.

So please join me next year for the
premiere of my series at Shady's Place
(whatever and wherever that may be).

Happy birthday to one of my favorite actresses...

    1. Hi, Arleen!

How are you doing, dear friend? Well, I hope. Thanks for coming over to view my tribute post in honor of Yvonne Lime Fedderson's 85th birthday!

Thanks for sharing that there was a group of Hellcats at your Catholic school. As the narrator of that movie trailer declared, every school had them. I didn't exactly become a Hellcat, but I gave myself an extreme makeover in 1965. In an effort to look cool, attract girls, find a peer group and fit in, I grew my hair longer, took up drinking and cigarette smoking and hung out at the Shady Dell. As Freddy Fender sang, "wasted days and wasted nights." :)

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Arleen. Please stay safe and healthy up there in PA!

Thanks for coming down from Alberta to help me celebrate Yvonne Lime's birthday, dear friend! I'm glad you enjoyed the show.

Thanks for showing me the snowy scene outside your window and how Mr. TT's attention was riveted as he observed that flock of birds on your laptop monitor. :)

Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend cat. Stay safe and well up there and again, thank you for your bravery and dedicated service to the community!

Watching the clip I couldn't help but wonder if either RiffTrax or MST3K had got a hold of that movie yet...

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for coming by, good buddy!

Yvonne Lime showed up in many of the movies and TV series I watched in the 50s. Along with High School Hellcats, her credits include other teensploitation films, the Michael Landon horror movie I Was a Teenage Werewolf, and the Elvis Presley film Loving You. I would think that the producers of RiffTrax and MST3K have looked into a few of her pictures.

Since retiring from acting in the late 60s, Yvonne has dedicated her life to charity and philanthropy. Yvonne along with actress friend Sara Buckner O'Meara co-founded Childhelp USA, an organization that helps neglected and abused children.

Thanks again for popping in, good buddy Alex!

  4. Tom,

What a fun birthday tribute to a swell gal! I don't believe I knew this star in her heyday but she sure had some hook ups with some cool celebrities and what a cutie she was back in the day. I betcha she's ever bit as pretty as that girl from yesterday. Happy Birthday Miss Lime!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Welcome, dear friend! Thanks for being here as I salute one of my favorite actresses, Yvonne Lime Fedderson, on her 85th birthday.

To offer a bit more background on this lovely lady, Yvonne's movies include the focus of today's post, High School Hellcats, along with other films in the teen crime/juvenile delinquency category including Untamed Youth, Dragstrip Riot and Speed Crazy. She was in the 1957 Elvis Presley film Loving You and that same year was leading lady in the horror flick I Was a Teenage Werewolf starring Michael Landon. On the small screen, Yvonne had her own TV series Happy featuring a talking, wise-cracking baby. She was in 11 episodes of The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show and 13 episodes of Father Knows Best in the recurring role of Dotty Snow, Betty Anderson's friend. She was on Ozzie and Harriet four times in three different roles and also in four episodes of Bringing Up Buddy.

In 1968, following an appearance on My Three Sons, Yvonne retired from acting and has spent her life working for charitable causes. You'll be interested to know that Yvonne is the author of the book Miracle Healing: God’s Call. Along with her actress friend Sara Buckner O'Meara, Yvonne founded Childhelp USA, an organization that aids abused and neglected children. Yvonne and Sara have been nominated 5 times for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Thanks again for joining me on this special occasion, dear friend Cathy!

Yessum, Yvonne Lime Fedderson isn't just another pretty face. Early on she quit her acting career to pursue a lifelong commitment to helping children. I admire her for it.

Thanks for returning to chat and taking an interest in the post, dear friend Cathy!.

Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Kelly, and stay safe and healthy over there in Arkansas!

Yessum, Yvonne racked up quite a few movie and TV credits in her short career and worked with some of the most famous leading men of the 50s. She went on to become one of the country's leading philanthropists helping countless children. Yvonne's is a life well lived.

Thanks again for coming, dear friend Gayle, and stay well!

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks for bringing your smile down to Shady's Place where this week I am saluting one of my favorite actresses, Yvonne Lime, as she marks her 85th birthday. I watched The Hardy Boys serials on the Mickey Mouse Club including The Mystery of the Ghost Farm in which Yvonne appeared along with Tim Considine. As you know, Tim went on to star in My Three Sons. Yvonne appeared in one episode of that series but it wasn't until 1968, three years after Tim had left the cast.

I'm delighted that you enjoyed this tribute to Ms. Lime, dear friend Janet. Thanks again for coming. I'll see you tomorrow!

    1. Hi diedre!

Thanks so much for being here, dear friend. I'm excited to see you!

I'm glad you enjoyed my tribute to Yvonne Lime on her special day. I remember a girl on my school bus who loved to flick lit matches into the hair of people seated in front of her. She had an evil grin and a disturbing laugh as she did so. I often wonder what prompted her to act out in that manner. Perhaps she came from a troubled home. Maybe she herself had been bullied. Other than that, I can't recall any knife-throwing incidents or any other acts of that nature at my high school, only the occasional "smokin' in the boys' room."

Yessum, Yvonne has talent and a big heart, pursuing a lifelong passion to help children in need. She's practically your neighbor. She and her daughter live in the Phoenix area in the community of Paradise Valley.

Shady has picked Joyce Martin, Yvonne's character in High school Hellcats, to host her own series here at Shady's Place beginning next year. I hope you'll stay tuned for it.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend diedre. I'll see you tomorrow at Pensive Pens!

Ah, Ricky Nelson! Love listening to the Nelsons and I love watching them too. Father/daughter bonding time right there, Shady! I really love the song you posted - he was a cutie. ;)

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for stopping in to help me celebrate Yvonne Lime's 85th b-day, dear friend!

Yvonne's acting career ended eons before you were born. Therefore it doesn't surprise me that you are not familiar with her. She was in a multitude of films and TV series I watched in the 50s and 60s. A few weeks ago, I saw her in an episode of The Andy Griffith Show in the role of a flight attendant.

I can't figure out why Yvonne's teen pop record featuring rock & roll legend Eddie Cochran on guitar wasn't released. I think it would have done well on the chart. Yessum, by all means get with your dad and show him the Ricky Nelson clip that shows Yvonne in the group of teenagers watching him and his band perform. Yvonne appeared in four episodes of Ozzie & Harriet and your dad might have seen one or all of them.

You can watch H.S. Hellcats in its entirety for free on YouTube. It's a hoot:

You can't beat a free mean girls movie on YouTube to pass the time while in quarantine. Hellcats is one of the best of the genre. Maybe you and your dad can watch it together. It's a hoot!

As far as I know Yvonne only recorded that one song, not an entire album. However I see that Yvonne & Eddie's previously unreleased recording "Ting-A-Ling Telephone" was finally released last summer on the Eddie Cochran CD compilation One Minute to One with Eddie Cochran & Friends, Vol. 2. It's being sold on Amazon for $11.49.

Thanks for returning to chat, dear friend JM!

  10. This is a film I still need to see because who didn’t have a girl who dresses well and throw knives. I am always surprised at how well built these gals were with their torpedo bras and tight belts. I love the fact that the heroine looks sweet and doesn’t wear those clothes. We had hellcats in school and I wanted to talk to them but was too scared. They never bothered me, it was the popular one who were beyond mean.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thank you for coming over to satisfy your curiosity and find out which of my favorite actresses was turning 85 years of age. Yessum, the birthday girl is Yvonne Lime Fedderson, a beauty who was skilled at playing sweet, innocent good girls teetering on the edge of going bad, surrounded as she often was by bad girls and bad boys. As you might know, Yvonne was married to executive producer Don Fedderson who created TV hits that included The Millionaire, My Three Sons and Family Affair.

I hope you will watch High School Hellcats in the near future. It's free on YouTube. Hellcats is categorized as a "psychotronic" film because it thinks outside the box. Seems like some of those Hellcat mean girls were held back (flunked) a few years in a row because they appear to be in their late 20s. :) Gotta love a cig smoking girl who demonstrates her switchblade knife-throwing expertise at school. :) How would you like to be her guidance counselor? Most girls I dated didn't throw knives at the wall. They stuck 'em in my back. :) Yessum, there are some dangerous curves on display in Hellcats. Many teensploitation films of the late 50s have tough sexpots wearing torpedo bras and tight belts. 1958, the year H.S. Hellcats was released, seems to be the biggest year of all for that trend.

Let us applaud Yvonne Lime for a lifetime of service to needy children through her organization Childhelp USA. If you scroll up and read my reply to Cathy Kennedy, you can check out Yvonne's other acting credits and her other accomplishments in the years since she retired from show biz.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend BB!

  11. Though I've seen both I Was a Teenage Werewolf and Loving You, I can't say immediately recognized this particular actress. I guess I just haven't connected the dots. Great name for a "teenage" starlet, though. Have you ever seen a 1950s AIP movie that I believe is titled (sorry, but writing on my phone, I'm in no position to quickly look this up) The Ghost of the Dragstrip Hollow? A middle-aged sociologist studies the modern teen-ager and likes what he sees. The first half of the movie takes itself quite seriously (the sociologist blames Cold War fears and the threat of nuclear annihilation for juvenile delinquency) but then takes an abrupt turn into goofy comedy. By the end of the film a haunted house has been exorcised by rock and roll!

    1. Hi, Kirk!

How are you holding up, good buddy? I hope you are well. Thank you very much for taking time to write a comment even though you are somewhat hampered in your ability to do so. Yes, I did see Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow when it was first released in 1959. I also saw its leading lady, Joy Fair, in Hot Rod Gang released the year before. During the 50s I watched hundreds of teensploitation, horror and sci-fi films. My big brother took me to a bunch of them before he joined the Air Force. After he left I went to the movies with my dad or with a group of friends. Any new film was considered "must see" if it had the word ghost, monster, creature or beast in the title, or if the plot dealt with an ordinary man, woman, bug or spider growing to jumbo size. Flicks of this kind included Them! (1954), The Deadly Mantis (1957), The Giant Claw (1957), The Amazing Colossal Man (1957) War of the Colossal Beast (1958) Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958) Earth vs. the Spider (1958) and The Giant Behemoth (1959).

I think we could all use a rock and roll exorcism right now. :) Thanks again for coming to Yvonne Lime's b-day party, good buddy Kirk. Take care of yourself and stick around for the debut of Joyce Martin's new series next year at your safe house away from home - Shady's Place!

  12. I read this while working the other day and could have sworn I commented! This was pretty fun and looking at all those young faces of stars gone by it's hard to imagine that they're either passed away or 85yrs young! But since I've continued to age I guess it shouldn't surprise me to know they have too! She sure got around..sort of like the Hellcats in my high school. Actually, I don't really recall any Hellcats in my school. But with 4,000 kids in the school I couldn't know everyone! (However, I do remember a few of my dates turning into wolves) Have a great weekend and Happy Easter to you and Mrs. Shady!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Yvonne's birthday party is still going strong, dear friend, and I thank you for coming!

Yessum, some of the young men and women who appeared in Hellcats are no longer with us, but Brett Halsey, the handsome young man who played Joyce's boyfriend Mike Landers, is still around and will turn age 87 in June. In 1959, the year after Hellcats was released, Brett and Yvonne were reunited in another teensplitation film called Speed Crazy. The last pic in my post is a promotional still from that movie. Brett was also in the genre film Hot Rod Rumble (1957) and appeared with Jack Nicholson in the psychotronic film The Cry Baby Killer (1958). Unfortunately glamour girl Jana Lunn, who played Connie, leader of the mean girl pack, died in 1991 at the age of 57.

I'm happy to know you didn't have knife-throwing Hellcats at your school. If your some of your dates turned into wolves, I'll bet they had to answer to your dad. :)

Thanks again for helping me pay tribute to Yvonne Lime who gave up acting at an early age and devoted her life to charitable work helping children. Stay well, dear friend YaYa!

  13. Howdy Shady! This is so entertaining, even though I didn't know this actress by name. I have seen her many times, I suppose and do remember the photo of her and Elvis sitting in that car. In fact, I believe it is in a book that I have of Karo's with a lot of Elvis photos and stories. I like to see anything Eddie Cochran does, and even tho "Ting-A-Ling" is a corny song, I totally enjoyed the video. Yvonne's voice in this song reminds me of Marilyn Monroe's voice, ahaha!

You really gathered up some great pictures of her scenes with Michael Landon, Elvis, and Ricky! I always loved Tim Considine! We watched him in Spin and Marty, and The Hardy Boys. I even watch My Three Sons frequently!

I don't think I ever saw the "Highschool Hellcats", Shady. Don't know how I missed that one. It might have been considered to risky for me at that time, haha!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over and helping me celebrate Yvonne Lime's 85th birthday. I saved you some punch. :)

Yvonne Lime's obscure recording featuring the guitar work of Eddie Cochran remained in the vault for decades. It finally saw the light of day last year when released on the Eddie Cochran CD anthology One Minute to One with Eddie Cochran & Friends, Vol. 2. Yvonne's song kinda reminds me of Robin Clark's 1961 single "Daddy, Daddy (Gotta Get A Phone In My Room)." Their voices are a lot different, but both teen pop recordings have a telephone theme and "ting-a-lings":

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzxSvasI8Tk

It's neat that you and I watched the same television shows in the 50s and 60s. I watched Spin And Marty at least two times through, plus all episodes of The Hardy Boys serial and most episodes of My Three Sons, especially during the early seasons when Tim Considine and William Frawley (as "Bub") were in the cast. "Robbie Douglas" (the late Don Grady) went on to play drums in the sunshine pop band Yellow Balloon.

If you'd like something to pass the time while hunkering down in quarantine, you can watch H.S. Hellcats free of charge on YouTube. Here's the link:

I hope you and Scootie are staying healthy and remain in good spirits through these challenging days and weeks. That goes for your son and your mother and sister, too.
