In this edition of the series I have posted four pairs of songs.
Each pair contains the original and a cover. I am curious
to know which version or versions you prefer.

EDDIE COCHRAN
Rock & roll and rockabilly star Eddie Cochran died young at the age of
21 on Easter Sunday, 1960, as a result of a car crash that occurred while
he was touring in the UK. "Sweetie Pie," a song Eddie co-wrote and
recorded in 1957, remained in the vault until the late summer of
1960 when it was released posthumously on a single as the
B side of "Lonely." Neither song charted in the U.S. but
in Britain "Lonely" grazed the top 40 and
"Sweetie Pie" peaked at #38.

THE BLUEBELL SISTERS
Now here's a delightful cover of Eddie Cochran's "Sweetie Pie" performed
by The Bluebell Sisters, a retro style girl group from Montreal, Canada,
that specializes in 1940s jump blues and 50s doo-wop and rockabilly.

SARAH JANE
This is my own video that I uploaded to YouTube after buying a various artists
CD of Brit girl pop and being blown away by mystery artist Sarah Jane. It is
the English sparrow's 1966 cover of "Listen People," a dramatic version of
the song that was a top 5 U.S. hit for Herman's Hermits that same year.
Sarah Jane has been compared to Marianne Faithfull because of her
hauntingly beautiful voice and style. Listen, people, to-- Sarah Jane!

Now listen to the original. Based on the church hymn "Jesus Let Us Come
To Know You" and featured in the 1965 Connie Francis movie musical
When the Boys Meet the Girls, Herman's Hermits do "Listen People."

AMY SLATTERY
I am pleased to welcome back the delightful Amy Slattery, the English singer,
guitar player and multi-instrumentalist discovered by talent scout Chris Griffin
and introduced on the old blog Shady Dell Music & Memories. Amy specializes
in Beatles covers and here's one of her best-- The Ballad Of John And Yoko!"

THE BEATLES
Now here is the nicely remastered mix of the original single released by
The Beatles in the spring of 1969. Written by John, the song about the
"Yoko effect" on the band, fans and the media, shot to #1 on the UK
chart, becoming the Beatles' 17th and last chart topping hit on that
survey. It is surprisingly to me that this Beatles classic didn't do
as well on the U.S. chart, halting in the lower part of the
top 10 on Billboard and Cash Box.

LITTLE PEGGY MARCH
In 1963, diminutive singer Little Peggy March set a record (that still stands) as the
youngest female artist to achieve a number one hit single. Peggy was 14 when she
waxed "I Will Follow Him" and had just turned 15 when the record began its climb
to the top of the chart. Peggy's hit is actually a cover version of the song. In 1961
French composer, arranger and conductor Franck Pourcel was the first to record
the tune as an instrumental, followed by a French language version of the song
released by Pet Clark in 1962. Another instrumental version was recorded by
Percy Faith. Watch this cool hybrid YouTube video that combines footage
from two Peggy March television appearances, one on American TV and
the other on Japanese TV, as she performs her classic of the innocent
pre-Beatles teen pop era - "I Will Follow Him!"

RICK NELSON
Later that same year, 1963, Rick Nelson released the studio album
For Your Sweet Love. One of the tracks on the album is an answer
to Peggy March's signature song. On an episode of his family TV
sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Rick sang his
version of the song entitled-- "I Will Follow You!"

Do you agree?
Have a Shady day!
I haven't thought about Herman's Hermits in awhile. I enjoyed the one you shared here! It was new to me.
ReplyDeleteHi, Kelly!
DeleteWelcome back, dear friend! Thanks for being the early bird this time and sampling the four sets of songs up Shady's sleeve.
For many years I avoided Herman's Hermits because I perceived them as wimpy. I got over that notion when I met Peter Noone in Tampa circa 1989 when he came to our MTV studio to tape promos for his upcoming show at a local venue. Peter was a heck of a nice guy and was still wearing that trademark ear-to-ear Herman grin. I have been a HH fan ever since.
Thanks again for your visit and comment, dear friend Kelly!
Hello Dear Shady! I hope you are keeping your distance and not think your freedom is taken away:) Did I just honestly go down this path?? OK, My butt is firmly planted in a chair and has not seen much of the outside except for a walk. Now I listened to each one and have made my professional opinion as top ass sitter of Niagara Canada:) I know the first song but had no idea the young guy died so young like James Dean. He sounds like Elvis to me so I didn't find it too original so I went with the gals who created a nice version all on their sweet own. The Bluebells from Montreal. The next song, even though that girl has a ghostly voice that is captivating, I give it to Herman's Hermits because I like the musical styling better. The 3rd one is a toughie for me because I like the musical style of the Beatles better but I love Amy's voice that gave so much more to this song so I give her the lead. The last song, Peggy wins by a mile for me because she sings this the way it is meant to be sung...like a young girl who has her first crush. Ricky sings it with lechery in his heart. I know he doesn't mean it that way but it just didn't appeal to me the same way as when Peggy sang it. So there ya go. Be healthy and stay safe
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteThank you for pulling double duty this week and responding to two of my posts at the same time. I appreciate your support, dear friend!
Yessum, I am keeping my distance from Mrs. Shady... same as I have done for the last 25 years. (BA-DUM-BUMP)
Thank you for plunking yourself down in a chair and listening to all of my musical offerings in this special edition of Winning Hand - FOUR PAIRS! Yessum, it was a tremendous and incalculable loss when Eddie Cochran was killed in an auto accident in England. Eddie's rock & roll buddy Gene Vincent only lived to be 36, and we all know that the great Buddy Holly was only 22 when he perished in a plane crash. The Big Bopper, who died with Buddy on that ill fated flight, was 28 and the other rising rock & roll star who died that day, Ritchie Valens, was only 17! Tragic stories like theirs can be found throughout rock & roll history.
Getting back to Eddie Cochran, he surely does sound a lot like Elvis on that 1957 recording released after his death in 1960. I'm happy to know you enjoyed the cover by your Canadian sisterhood The Bluebells of Montreal.
I'm thrilled that you were captivated by mystery songstress Sarah Jane's vocals on "Listen People." Her cover of the Herman's Hermits hit is so enchanting that I was inspired to edit and upload that video to YouTube. Read my response to Kelly (above) to learn about my "brush with greatness" the time I met Peter Noone.
I am also excited that you favor Amy Slattery's version of that John Lennon song over The Beatles' remastered original! I intend to notify Amy that I have another of her videos running this week, and I am sure she will be delighted to know you liked her performance so much.
Ricky Nelson was quite a ladies man, I have read. Do you really think he had "lust in his heart" as he sang that Peggy March cover? :) I suppose a male singer changing the title to "I Will Follow You" does sound rather "stalkerish," doesn't it?
Wow, Birgit, thanks again for taking all that time to read, listen and comment, and also for leaving kind remarks on Margaret's post. I appreciate your effort. Stay well and I'll see you soon, dear friend!
Hi Shady,
ReplyDeleteI will follow him wherever he may go! I've always loved that song by Little Peggy March and this just made me giddy. I remember this Ricky Nelson son too, ah, I remember listening to both of these songs with dad. I needed this cheer up today.
No "The Joker"? ;) With the lead up, I thought you would have had Steve Miller Band! Twiztid even did a cover of "The Joker"! However, I love the songs you posted. I haven't listened to Eddie Cochran in ages. The Blue Bell Sisters give him a run for his money, I love both equally, but I do love the Blue Bell Sisters' voices.
I'm not really a Beatles fan, save for a few songs. I really like the cover, but I'm not a fan of the song itself. I'll check out more of Amy Slattery. :)
Have a great Thankful Thursday, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for hustling over on day one, dear friend, to find out what old Shady has up his sleeve!
I'm glad you enjoyed both versions of "I Will Follow." It starts with a great song, I always say, and that one, penned in the English language by Normal Gimbel, is a great song. Lyricist Gimbel also famously wrote the words to "Killing Me Softly With His Song," "Sway," a hit for Bobby Ryudell first waxed by Dean Martin (a top 10 hit for Dean in the UK), and the worldwide mid 60s Brazilian bossa nova hit "The Girl from Ipanema" recorded by Stan Getz feat. the vocal debut of Astrud Gilberto (coming up here at Shady's Place soon). Gimbel also penned movie and TV themes.
I'm glad you enjoyed Eddie Cochran and The Canadian Bluebell Sisters, not to be confused with the U.S. girl group Patti LaBelle and The Blue Belles.
My goodness, it's rare to meet someone who doesn't love The Beatles. How do you think that came about? What specifically don't you like about The Beatles and most of their songs including this one about John & Yoko? I'm curious. This is my third post to include the cover artistry of Brit girl Amy Slattery. She previously appeared in a two-part series on Shady Dell Music & Memories.
Happy TT to you as well, dear friend JM, and thanks again for coming!
Hi Shady,
DeleteMy parents aren't too thrilled with the Beatles either - we are not really big fans of their content and my dad's Hell's Angels cousin LOVED the Beatles, so he has a bad association with the group.
The Bluebell Sisters reminds me of the performers on Bitchin' Kitchen. Bitchin' Kitchen is also a Canadian show, so it might be a Canadian thing. I dig their style!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9d8znHqA3c
I can't wait for that entry about Astrud Gilberto. I love "Killing Me Softly With His Song," and "The Girl From Ipanema."
Have a great Friday, dear friend!
Hi again, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for returning to explain at least to some extent why you and your folks never warmed to The Beatles. They have such an extensive catalog and performed in so many different styles that it makes me wonder if you are familiar with it all. Maybe if you dug deeper into their albums you'd find something to like.
Thanks for telling me about Bitchin' Kitchen. I looked at a couple of their videos and do see some similarity to the sassy Bluebell Sisters.
Summer's coming, and that's when you will see Astrud Gilberto perform here at Shady's Place. :)
Happy Friday to you as well, dear friend JM. Thanks again for coming over!
Mayhaps. There are a few songs I do love, but I wouldn't call myself a fan. There are a lot of things out there that I like a handful of songs, but couldn't call myself a fan.
DeleteI miss Bitchin' Kitchen. That used to come on the Cooking Channel, but then they took it off the air. I don't watching Cooking Channel anymore. I might get back to it; I like the Cooking Channel better than Food TV, the shows are more entertaining and some of them include music. :D
I can't wait, dear friend! I'll most likely be spending my summer indoors. My parents are Trumpers, calling COVID "fake news" and can't wait for this quarantine to be over. Me, I'm the opposite. COVID is very real, and very deadly. I've been paying off debt; according to Mint, I saved $2000 in April, I'm slated to pay off more debt by June and it's nice not going anywhere. I want to use this time to get debt free and save. I'll also be writing (hopefully for some money) and working on Happiness Box 2019's scrapbook and the 2020 HBP. I'll celebrate summer on walks and music.
Have a great Sunday, dear friend!
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteI wonder if there is a GF Cooking Channel or Food Network. I'm sure there are individual programs devoted to that dietary restriction.
WHAT? Now both of your parents are Trumpers? I thought only your mother is. I don't envy you cooped up in quarantine with people on the other side of the political spectrum. I'm sure you all keep in mind that family love and loyalty supersedes politics. I admire you for saving so much $$$. That's an impressive amount!
Thanks again for stopping in, dear friend JM, and have a safe and healthy week ahead!
Hi Tom,
DeleteDad can't stand him, but he's a registered republican for work (back when he started at the county, you HAD to be republican) and he doesn't like Biden either. He's cooped up in the house, but I rather be cooped up than sick or dead.
I'm not sure. I love watching cooking shows, then I Google the GF version of the recipes. I do that a lot with kosher cooking too. Oh, guess what! GF matzo ball soup mix was on sale for $.50! GF matza meal balls are in my future, dear friend!
Have a great evening, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for swinging in to continue our thread, dear friend!
The way things are shaping up, this will be a "hold your nose" type of election. Try your best to keep the peace with both parents. We all need to pull together at a time like this.
Mrs. Shady made meatball subs for dinner yesterday. I wish mine had been GF. I think you're on to something.
Thanks again for stopping by, dear friend JM! I have a new post starting in the morning. I'm introducing a young lady and a style of music that I hope you'll like.
Just finished my shifts. Glad to still being in one piece … kind of, hmmm … have some days off now. Will not feel guilty about picking up extra shifts. Cuz when I start crying it is not very funny. Anyway … happy about your post. Thank you, friend Shady. Best wishes and much love from Thunderbutt and this cat:) https://www.youtube.com/embed/h77xBZga1lI?rel=0&controls=0&showinfo=0
ReplyDeleteHi, cat!
DeleteThanks for checking in and checking out the latest volume of Shady's Winning Hand, dear friend!
I feel for you up there facing the unknown on a daily basis as a healthcare professional on the front lines of the corona battle. I hope you get some rest and relaxation on your days off. I'm glad the songs I posted gave your spirits a lift.
LUBBINS to you and kitty cat Theo Thunderbutt. P.S. - I tried to use the address you provided, but got an error message that read: "not available." If you have another video showing TT I'd like to see him!
Keep well, enjoy your days off and come back and see me soon, dear friend cat!
k,2nd and last try … https://www.youtube.com/embed/h77xBZga1lI?rel=0&controls=0&showinfo=0 Love, c.
DeleteHi, cat!
DeleteI tried again and still get a message that says "video unavailable" but it let me click on the one you uploaded on April 1 entitled "Thunderbutt, Catnip And Supper" which I already watched a few weeks ago and liked. I love your kitty and I wish both of you a restful few days ahead. Hope the weather is improving.
Thanks again, dear friend cat!
Good morning Shady from Siberia! We'll, it's really my Covid 19 screening station but it's a damp, chilling morning here! I really enjoyed all the songs today. There was only one I didn't know. That would be the first one. He sure sounded like Elvis! I liked the second version but probably because of the video! So cute! However, the Eddie version was better. The next 3 has me sticking with the originals. I so loved Herman's Hermits! Can't be disloyal to the Beatles! I was a bit swayed by Dreamy Ricky Nelson so I think I'm actually giving those versions a tie! I hope you're staying safe and healthy and enjoying your warm weather. I know ours will get there one day! Back to work, have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteHow are you, dear friend? Thanks for joining the fun! I'm glad you were able to get a message through to me from your remote Camp COVID outpost.
Yessum, Elvis imitators started cropping up as soon as Presley exploded onto the music scene with his swaggering style of rock & roll. Eddie Cochran did indeed sound like Elvis on that recording. I wonder why it remained in the vault for three years unreleased. I think it would have been a hit in 1957. I'm glad you liked the video produced by the Montreal based Bluebell Sisters. I discovered them only a few days ago and decided to plug them into this edition of Winning Hand. I'm delighted to know you also enjoyed one of the many hits by Herman's Hermits along with the remastered Beatles, Peggy March and Rick Nelson. There are dozens of great performances by Ricky culled from his family's TV series over the years and I will bring you the best of them.
We have been experiencing strong storms down here since early this morning and remain under a tornado watch for another hour. However our lawns are surely benefiting from the rain.
Thank you again for breaking away from your duties to visit and comment, dear friend YaYa. You are a hero just like your father was!
Hi Shady!
ReplyDeleteThe Joker card reminds me that I just saw the movie by the same name last weekend. eesh. But where the movie was dark, this post shines with brilliant talent! Eddie Cochran sure has a powerful voice, and the Bluebell Sisters’ video is delightful! I liked Sarah Jane’s version of “Listen” more than the Hermits, but either way, I loved the song. It’s amazing that Little Peggy was only 14. I was only 5 when I sang every word right along with her ;- )
Thanks, Shady! I’ve had a great time here today!
Hi, diedre!
DeleteThanks for dropping in for some music, memories and fun, dear friend!
Mrs. Shady and I watched that Joker movie a month ago. It was much too dark for her and I was also taken aback by its brutality.
I'm thrilled to learn that you enjoyed Eddie Cochran's original of "Sweetie Pie" along with the colorful cover by the Canadian Bluebell Sisters. I am especially pleased to know that you appreciated the soft voiced singing of mystery artist Sarah Jane on her cover of "Listen People." I came to know and love her version several years ago when it turned up on a various artists compilation of Brit girl recordings that I bought.
Yessum, Little Peggy March was only 14 when she made the record that became one of the biggest hits of the pre-Beatles 60s, the girl pop/teen pop classic "I Will Follow Him." Peggy is a year-and-a-half older than Shady and just turned 72 last month. Peggy was born fairly close to where I lived in Pennsylvania and now, by chance, lives somewhere here in Florida. I think she might be stalking me. :)
Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, dear friend diedre. I'll see you tomorrow on "V" Day!
Hey Shady, finally made it over here! I am in love with Ricky Nelson all over again. John and Yoko's ballad should not be sung by anyone else. Herman's Hermits wins their battle and Eddie Cochrane reminds me of Elvis. How sad that he did not live very long. I am sorry that I cannot be as comprehensive as you are in your comments right now but let me tell you how much I appreciate all the work you put into your posts. It is a real joy to experience these songs again. Thanks! Have a great rest of your day.
ReplyDeleteHi, Janet!
DeleteI'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for popping in to catch Shady dealing from the bottom of the deck and pulling four pairs out of his sleeve. :)
I'll bet you were crushed the day Rick died in that plane crash. I know I was. As you recall he died New Year's Eve 1985. I awoke the next morning to the terrible news. I'm glad you enjoyed Rick's cover/answer song to Peggy March's hit "I Will Follow Him."
If this were a Battle of the Bands post I believe most of the original artists would be winning. However, let me stress that this is only an exhibition. This is not a competition. Please - no wagering! :)
Yessum, Eddie Cochran seems to be doing his best Elvis impression on "Sweetie Pie." It's a mystery to me why this great rock & roll song remained locked in the vault three years until after Eddie's untimely death.
You are sweet, Janet. I appreciate your compliment on the amount of "play" (not work) I put into my posts. They are labors of love, just like the meticulously arranged pages of your scrapbooks.
I'm glad these oldies but goodies brought you some joy today. Thanks again for stopping by and have a wonderful day out there in Cali!
Hi Shady. I had a cat named Sarah Jane back in the 1970's. She was a great mother cat. I like Sarah Jane's cover of "Listen People", it's as though she owned it first...very nice. Then, when I got to Herman's Hermits, I remember the "pop" he delivers that makes the song more believable. Of course, I adore him!
ReplyDelete"The Ballad of John and Yoko". I never knew the name of this one, but I did like it. Amy does a great job on the song, she is so cute and talented. It is pretty hard to outdo the Beatles on this one.
I love Eddie Cochran, and it is so sad about his young death! I wonder if he could have gone a bit further in his career. He was a good guitarist, great moves and stage presence! I don't really care for the wording of this song, but his voice and music make it good. The Bluebell Sisters do a good job for a retro performance, but, Eddie is what makes this one.
"I Will Follow Him" is a staple these days. I love this classic song and how it was featured in "Sister Act"! Little Peggy March is cute, and has a great voice. And, Rick, with his slow, sultry, sleepy voice just doesn't deliver the song with enough pizzazz to make it believable (aside from his good looks).
So, that's the story, Shady! Guess I'm all for the original recordings on this one, although, the contenders gave great performances.
Hope you are doing well, dear friend. It's getting rather warm now in my neck of the woods, and I am running the AC right now. I'm still schooling Scootie, and hope I can get him through another 6 weeks, ugh! His class graduates from this school, but there will be no ceremony. I don't know what they will come up with. A diploma would be nice, wouldn't it?
So, take care...love this post, Shady! Have a great weekend!♫
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteThanks for swinging over to check out the 4th installment of Shady's Winning Hand, dear friend! I'm glad you liked the four pairs he had up his sleeve.
What an interesting coincidence that you once had a cat named Sarah Jane. I never even knew of a girl or a woman named Sarah Jane until I came across this mystery singer on a Brit girl compilation I bought. Some think it is Marianne Faithfull using a different stage name for some reason. As you might have read, Marianne recently came down with coronavirus. She just checked out of the hospital a day or two ago, apparently having recovered. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed Sarah Jane's gentle vocals on her cover of the Hermits' "Listen People." I say her rendition stands as a classic in its own right. I never saw or even heard of that teen musical flick Herman's Hermits appeared in. I read that When The Boys Meet The Girls is a remake of the 1943 film Girl Crazy starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. I DID see that movie back in 2007 when I spent the entire year binge watching old black & white films from the mid 20th century and earlier. Along with Connie Francis, When the Boys Meet the Girls also features Louis Armstrong and Liberace.
I'm glad you enjoyed the return to my blogs of Amy Slattery, the talented Brit girl who was the focus of a two-parter on SDMM. I will continue to showcase her singing and guitar playing talents here on SPMM.
I'm sure Eddie Cochran would have continued on as a recording star had he not been killed in that car crash. Yet, given the huge impact of The Beatles, he might have started to struggle in 1964 as did Elvis, Ricky and other rock & roll idols.
Yessum, I saw the movie Sister Act and enjoyed the use of the Peggy March hit in the soundtrack. I thought it was cool how the YouTube uploader blended two of Peg's TV performances into one video.
Looks like the original versions continue to dominate in this edition of Winning Hand. Thanks for acknowledging the cover artists in the post.
It has been raining here since the pre-dawn hours. Strong storms moved through this morning and we were under a tornado watch until 11 am. The good news is that the lawns have been getting a good soaking over the past few days, easing the spring drought and eliminating the need to run the sprinklers.
I applaud you for working hard all these weeks to home school Scootie as everybody continues to hunker down and distance themselves. Yessum, it's a shame Scootie can't experience the joy and satisfaction that comes from a graduation ceremony. I hope they issue diplomas to the children through the mail.
As I write this reply to you, Mrs. Shady is busy sewing face masks for us!
"It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack."
Thank you again for making time for a visit and for your usual superb comment, dear friend Suzanne. Have a safe and happy weekend!
T
DeleteHi, Kirk!
DeleteI'll take that as a compliment, good buddy! :)
I know you've been having tech problems in recent weeks, and I appreciate the poke to let me know you're still out there.
I thought about you a couple of weeks ago when Mort Drucker, Master of the Mad Caricature, died at the age of 91.
Take care of yourself and stop in whenever you can, good buddy Kirk!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteCool! I enjoyed your mewsic originals and covers. I think for the most part I prefer the original artists' versions but I'm a little torn on the two 'I Will Follow' renditions. Ricky Nelson's voice is so smooth. Every time I hear this song I always think about 'Sister Act'. That's a fun movie! Have a blessed Sunday afternoon, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteWelcome in, dear friend! Thanks for coming over on your Sunday.
If this were a BOTB, the four original artists and original versions would be declared the winners. It's good to know it's a neck and neck race between Little Peggy March and Rick Nelson on the "I Will Follow" song. You are the second person to mention Sister Act, a movie I have seen at least twice. I liked it, too!
I hope you and DH had a wonderful weekend, dear friend Cathy. Thanks again for making time for a visit. I'll see you tomorrow on "W" Day!
I had a bird named Sweetie Pie. Eddie Cochran sounded a lot like Elvis. What a shame that his life was cut short by a horrible accident!
ReplyDeleteHi, Sherry!
DeleteHow are you, dear friend? Thanks a lot for dropping in to hear four original recordings along with four covers.
"Sweetie Pie" does sound like a good name for a canary or other pet bird. I see that you agree with me and several others that Eddie Cochran was an Elvis soundalike on that 1957 record. Eddie reportedly performed a heroic deed as the fatal auto accident was unfolding. He threw himself over a female passenger, his songwriter fiancee Sharon Sheeley, in an attempt to protect her from injury and in doing so was thrown from the vehicle and sustained mortal injuries. Sharon was injured in the crash but recovered.
Thanks again for coming over, dear friend Sherry. I hope you find a way to enjoy the rest of your week!
