Toto Moto and Brian Griffin Bark in Perfect Harmony:
"I Don't Know Why I Love This Commercial... But I Do!"

SHADY DEL KNIGHT WILL RECEIVE COMPENSATION
IN THE AMOUNT OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS
IN RETURN FOR PUBLISHING THIS ARTICLE
EXTOLLING THE VIRTUES OF
DOCTOR SNAGGLETOOTH'S
BACON FLAVORED DENTAL CREAM.

Hi, folks! It's me,
Chief Petting Officer
Toto Moto, the jolly
Shady's Place mascot
and your hound of
sound on S-P-M-M
Retrosonic Radio!

And I'm
Brian Griffin
from Family Guy...
another member of
The Shady Bunch
deejay staff.

Toto and I are poking our snouts in to let
you know that Shady's move went well.
Starting today he is easing back into
blogging and will visit you soon.

And with Valentine's Day fast
approaching... me and my
bowwow buddy Brian are
gonna throw you a bone
and bark the praises of our
favorite television commercial.
It's number one with a bullet,
the hottest spot in the land, the
most popular and talked about
commercial of 2020. It's the
one produced for the travel tech
company Expedia to advertise
their Expedia App. The tagline
reads: “Everything Your Trip
Needs for Everyone You Love.”

The commercial's catchy
jingle introduces to a
brand new and much
younger audience of TV
viewers an oldie but goody
entitled (I don't know why)
"But I Do," a top 5 charting
single released in 1961 by
R&B singer Clarence
"Frogman" Henry.
Check it out!

I don't know about you, Toto, but I could almost
hear the oohs and aahs of viewers all over the
country when it showed a closeup of that cute
Whippet gazing at his human mommy as she

soaked in a bubble bath and used
the Expedia App on her phone

to browse pet friendly vacation rentals
for an upcoming family trip.

Just call me snoopy, Brian,
but I did some digging and
found lots of people on
social media reacting to
Expedia's "Pet Friendly"
commercial. Many of
them think the spot is
supercalifragilistic-
Expedialidocious.
Just look are some
of their comments!

"I ❤ this commercial!"

"Love the song."

"Who is the actress? Love that song too."

(TOTO MOTO: She's Toronto-based actress Erica Levene.)

"The Whippet has such a cute little mug-- sold me on Expedia!"

"Love this commerical, the actress, dog and song.
Short and to the point, well done Expedia!"

"I love your commercial, the clumsy husband, the dog just is the high point!"

"Such a cute commercial, love the dog the most!"

"Love the song, the lady in the bath, and the dog, just perfect."

"I love this commercial: the song, whole family and the dog. Also I love Expedia!"

"My most fav advert where the lady and dog look at each other with so much love."

"She rocks! This is quite literally the best commercial I have seen in a while."

"I love this commercial. It is the ONLY one I will stop and listen to.
The look on the Black ladies face, her boy in the car and the last
look between the lady and the dog is precious. What ever
ad firm produced this should get an award."

(BRIAN: Credit for the spot goes to Razorfish Digital Agency and 180LA,
a creative boutique under the Wunderman Advertising umbrella.)

"This ad just grows on you: the kids, the dad, the mom, the dog
and the frogman song. Stuck in my head for weeks now.
Don't know why I love it, but I do. :( "

"I lovvvvveeeee that dog!!!!!"

"More of this whippet please!!!"

Hey Brian, all that
puppy love reminds me
of another great old
song - "Whippet!"

Now Whippet
Into shape
Shape it up
Get straight
Go forward
Move ahead
Try to detect it
It's not too late
To Whippet
Whippet good

Whippet good and, we hope you folks agree,
that Expedia commercial is, as Tony the
Tiger would say..."Gr-r-reat!"

Now for my K-9 kuzzin

To play us off, here again is
Clarence "Frogman" Henry,

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for being the early bird as I resume blogging, good buddy!

That dog seems to be melting everybody's heart. I want a Whippet! FYI - some people commenting on social media think it might be an Italian Greyhound instead of a Whippet. Whatever the case, they are all of the same dog family.

Thanks again for dropping in, good buddy Alex, and have a nice week!

  2. Awww.... I love the ad!!

Isn't it wonderful when they use old songs like that in advertisements? (or even new ones, since it sometimes reaches those who might not hear them otherwise) I recall an ad that featured Whispering Grass by the Ink Spots. I can almost guarantee most people didn't remember that song!

Good to have you back, Shady.

    1. Hi, Kelly!

I missed you, dear friend, and I'm delighted to have you over as I return to blogging with Toto and Brian barking about this viral Expedia ad featuring what most think is a Whippet. With your knowledge of dogs perhaps you can verify the breed.

I used to hate it when oldies from my youth turned up as the jingles in TV commercials, especially when they didn't use the original artist's recording but instead a copycat recording made by studio session singers and musicians. In the case of this spot, it's a winner all the way. Thanks to the creative Mad Men at the Razorfish Digital and 180LA shops, much of the civilized world is getting to know R&B artist Clarence Henry for the first time. That makes me happy and I'm sure he is also basking in his new found fame.

I hope you showed this post to my buddy Pat. :) Thanks for stopping by, dear friend Kelly, and have a great week!

  3. Welcome back, Shady!

Fantastic commercial! Couldn't suppress a smile if I wanted to. The melody, the voice, the obvious bond between the lady and her dog - absolutely perfect! And, thanks for the history of the song - as well as what breed that dog might be.

Have you seen the Subaru Crosstrek commercial about the dog who visits the neighbor - constantly? Remember how Evian's skating babies became a sensational hit? Gads, I should get out more ;-)

    Have a wonderful February!

    1. Hi, diedre!

Thanks for being here to welcome me back to blogging, dear friend! I appreciate your visit and I'm glad my post got you smiling. Seems you agree with most people on social media that this Expedia spot is a charming commercial that reveals the bond between the Whippet and his pet human. Many people mistake her for Viola Davis of How To Get Away With Murder. It is actually Canadian actress Erica Levene.

I remembered those Evian "Rappers Delight" babies and reviewed the commercial just now. They creep me out a little, remind me of Chucky :) I wasn't familiar with the Subaru Crosstrek execution entitled "Old Friends" and looked it up. It is another heartwarming advertising idea illustrating the vehicle's durability and longevity as the dog (Banjo) and his farm neighbor age before our eyes.

Thank you again for your cheery visit and kind words, dear friend diedre. Take care of that shoulder and enjoy the rest of your February!

  4. Welcome home Shady!! Missed you these past weeks and hoped everything was going good with your move. I also love this commercial! That sweet doggy face makes me smile every time! Love that song too and I always want to sing it to Arnold...but I don't want to torture him with my singing! Have a wonderful Valentine's day... although I bet you have some romantic songs for us soon! Glad you're back!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks for dropping in for some doggone good fun, dear friend! Yessum, the move went well overall, with only a few minor glitches. Mrs. Shady and I are happy to be getting settled in our new dwelling. (We're your new neighbors on the other side of the Creepy Woods. :)

I knew you'd relate to that sweet doggy face. Those eyes gaze right through you, don't they? If he/she were mine, I'd give that Whippet lubbins all day long. I'm also happy to know you like the oldie but goody by Frogman Henry. That catchy hit song was an ideal choice as the music bed for the commercial. People all over the country and across the pond are responding favorably to the spot.

You know me well, dear friend. Austin Powers is waiting in the wings to host the annual Valentine's Day dance, so please stay tuned for his batch of Brit bird records coming up on the 14th.

Have a wonderful week, dear friend YaYa!

I'm glad to hear that your move went well and was successful. Welcome back, dear friend! It's so nice to see and read you again. :)

Thanks for the giggles, this entry hit the spot. I also love the song at the end; wasn't too familiar with it, but I think tomorrow I will give it another listen.

Have a great Monday, dear friend!

Thanks for the warm welcome, dear friend! It's good to see you, too. I'm glad this post hosted by DJ dawgs Toto and Brian tickled your funny bone. Glad you like the Frogman oldie that rode the chart in 1961 - eons before you were born.

Thanks again for coming and enjoy your week, dear friend JM!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Sorry you had a day that was ruff-ruff, dear friend. :) I've been nursing a bad cold for four days now and feeling poorly. I need to take a couple of cold pills and get to bed.

However, before I turn in, I will be over to read your TT post. Here's to better days ahead for both of us!

  6. Tom,

Welcome back to Blogosphere, my friend! It's interesting, you crossed my mind yesterday while stuck in my flurry of internet activity and other going-ons. I had every intention of stopping by just to see if you'd returned but somehow I ran out of time to get all I wanted done online. Sadly, that happens all too frequent. Poor manager of time or too many irons in the fire? I think it's the later. :) I'm happy to know that your move went well. Now, to slide back into a normal routine again and just relax. I know y'all are happy to have this job over with.

I think Toto Moto is by far a cuter pup then that one in the Expedia commercial. I like animals but apparently my taste differs from marketers. Perhaps, they're trying to appeal to a particular demographics. Anywho, the mewsic is always a pleasure to listen to at your place. "I Don't Know Why I Love You" is a new-to-me. This song released several months before I was born. It was in the top 10s, so I'm not sure why this one hasn't reached my ears before now. Clarence Frogman Henry is also new to me. What do you think might I have heard of his later on? Clarence is a year older than my daddy. Although, my daddy grew up in the era Clarence purformed I kinda suspect he wasn't much of an R&B listener. He always tended to listen to country and bluegrass when I was kid. Have a boogietastic week, my friend and again, it's great having you back!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for the warm welcome, dear friend. It's great to see you! You made blog mascot Toto Moto blush when you concluded that he/she is cuter than the pup in the commercial. (My pet Toto, the inspiration behind the Shady Bunch character Toto Moto, was actually female.) Given that the dog in the commercial is in the Greyhound family, I emailed our dear friend Michele in hopes she can identify the exact breed.

I'm glad you enjoyed the oldie used in the commercial. The catchy song has been stuck on replay in my mind and in the minds of millions since the spot made its debut last fall. I doubt Frogman's hit song "But I Do" will re-enter the Billboard chart again in 2020, but it did enjoy a second run on the chart in 1993 and renewed popularity in 1994 and 1999. Wiki explains: "The song was made popular again after its use in a 1993 UK television commercial for the Fiat Cinquecento and appearances in the 1994 film Forrest Gump and the 1999 film Mickey Blue Eyes, and a 2019 commercial for Expedia and its ability to provide dog-friendly hotel accommodations." In the early weeks of 1957 Clarence Henry gained his first hit with "Ain't Got No Home," a single that went top 3 R&B and top 20 pop. In 1961 he followed "But I Do" and brushed the top 10 with "You Always Hurt The One You Love," a pop standard penned in the mid 1940s and recorded by numerous artists in the years since. The top 20 hit "Lonely Street," released later in 1961, was Frogman's last major hit.

Thank you again for your kind visit and comments, dear friend Cathy. Enjoy the rest of your week!

    2. Tom,

I sampled Frogman's tunes on YT earlier in the week and the three song titles didn't ring a bell. I guess it's possible there's a little familiarity to "You Always Hurt The One You Love". Perhaps I heard a different artist cover. I hopped over to YT to double check this and I believe it's Michael Buble's version I recall, as well as Connie Francis'. Have a good day, my friend!

    3. Hi, Cathy!

Good to see you again, dear friend! Yessum, many artists have recorded the pop standard "You Always Hurt The One You Love," and Clarence Henry's version is probably not the best known to younger folks like you. I remember The Mills Brothers doing it. Also, Wiki shares this tidbit: "The song was performed by Ryan Gosling and featured prominently in the 2010 film Blue Valentine."

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Cathy!

  7. WELCOME BACK TOM!! What an entrance you make! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this commercial!!! And the song of course. That Whippet is so adorable and I love the connection between the woman and her dog. Expedia did great with this one.
And I cracked up when you used to Devo lyrics to "prove" there is another Whippet song. hahahaha "Whip it, Whip it good!"

Speaking of whip, I have to whip myself back to my task at hand: I'm packing for my upcoming 70s Rock & Romance Cruise. I might come back to blogging with a post about that trip and all the great bands who will be performing for us.

    Looking forward to connecting soon.
And great job on making your come-back post one of the best ever!! :)

Thank you very much for dropping by, dear friend! I'm excited to see you. I just read your email alerting me that you left a comment on this Expedia dog post. I'm so glad you know and love the spot as much as I and many others do. I'm also happy to know that Toto gave you the giggles with his Devo song parody. :)

I am thrilled that you are going on that cruise and catching the live performances of all those classic rock bands. I think it would be a super idea for you to return to blogging with a post reviewing your experiences on the Love Boat. :)

Thank you again for coming over and spreading joy, dear friend Michele. Have a great time, continue to recover from your surgeries, stay safe and I'll be back in touch with you soon!

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks for popping in for some laughs as Shady's two deejay dogs, Toto and Brian, introduce the Whippet from the famous Expedia commercial. I'm delighted that you like having the catchy Frogman Henry song stuck in your noggin long after the spot airs. Of course, since the advert typically runs several times a day, it doesn't give you much of a chance to forget about it. Now you have me picturing Benny gazing at you while you take a bubble bath. Has that ever happened? :)

Thank you again for joining the fun, dear friend Janet. Enjoy the rest of your week and I'll be over to see you soon at Janet's Smiles!

    1. Hi, cat!

I'm pleased to see you, dear friend! Thanks for joining the fun as Toto and Brian help me ease back into blogging after my moving break.

I'm happy that you find the Expedia commercial entertaining. For the longest time I remembered the song jingle and the closing bubble bath scene with the Whippet, but afterward could not remember the product or service that was being advertised. Even so I am sure that, subliminally, the Expedia name was being firmly embedded in my noggin and the spot was successful in establishing brand recognition and recall.

Are you saying that Theo Thunderbutt watches you take bubble baths? :) I'll bet he wasn't very happy when he fell in, seeing as how most cats don't like to get wet.

Thank you again for joining me today and welcoming me back to blogging, dear friend cat. I'll be back on V-day with my next post and hope to see you then!

  10. Entertaining commercial, to be sure, but tell me, Shady, has it actually inspired to use Expedia? Remember, commercials aren't just there to entertain you, they want you to CONSUME.

Actually, it's a good commercial for Clarence Frogman Harry. I'm inspired to go out and buy a CD of his (assuming they still sell CDs.)

    Welcome back, Shady.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for the welcome back, good buddy! I'm delighted that you find the Whippet commercial entertaining. Great and memorable as it is, I have not yet been inspired to use Expedia. However, I am highly motivated to use DOCTOR SNAGGLETOOTH'S BACON FLAVORED DENTAL CREAM. I urge you to try the product because the company pays me a finder's fee for every new customer I bring in. :)

CD??? Doesn't ring a bell. Does that stand for climate disaster? But seriously, if I were in the market for a Clarence Henry compilation, I'd choose this import containing all his original A and B sides from 1956-62:

      https://www.amazon.com/You-Always-Hurt-One-Love/dp/B01EOP0U92/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=clarence+henry&qid=1581528943&s=music&sr=1-2

Thanks again for swinging over, good buddy Kirk!

I'm glad to know that you are now moved, and settling in to your new home and life. I can only see that as an exciting new adventure, and I wish I could muster up the nerve to do the same.

We've had cold and rainy weather off and on for over a week and all is wet. I will be taking Shawn to his Valentine dance this evening at school, and I hope he will get up and socialize more this time. Kids are funny-some are so aggressive, and others are too shy. Scootie has come out of his shell a bit more than this time last year.

You have been missed Shady. I remember the song, and it was good to hear it. You and Mrs. Shady have a wonderful Valentine's Day. Take care, dear friend!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

It's great to see you, dear friend! Thanks for joining me as I get back into the swing of things on the blog circuit. I'm thrilled that you like this Expedia commercial, the "But I Do" song and the palpable chemistry between the woman and her lovable pet Whippet begging to go bye-byes with her on the family vacay.

Yessum, we are moved but still unpacking, assembling new desks, etc. The worst is behind us though. I wish you could send some of your rain and cold over here, Suzanne. We are dry as a bone and the temp is exceeding 80 most days of the week by now. Florida summer is pushing hard to make an early entrance.

I hope Scootie has a good time at the Valentine's dance. When I was his age I needed to be dragged kicking and screaming to such functions because I was shy and didn't want to be forced to dance. My mom's philosophy was "GO! you're gonna have fun whether you like it or not." :) I'm happy to learn that Scootie is starting to come out of his shell. Maybe this evening's social event will be another step in that direction.

Thank you again for being here to welcome me back, dear friend Suzanne. Stay tuned because Austin Powers - International Man of Mystery and Music History - will be here tomorrow morning to host my annual Valentine's Day party. I wish you a happy V-day, my wonderful friend!
