"Hanky Panky" - The Shondells
(June/July 1966, highest chart pos. #1)
The Shondells leading us off with "Hanky Panky," another song that
gained a new set of naughty lyrics thanks to me and my Dell rat buddies.
By the way, "Hanky Panky" is a lot older than you might think. It was
written in 1963 and first waxed by a girl group called The Summits -
another cool record. The version you just heard by Tommy James
and his group was first released in early 1964 and again in '65,
but it took until the summer of 1966 to become a #1 smash.

This special leap year edition is called "A Tale of Two Ditties" because I'm playing
two great versions of the same song -"Gimme Some Lovin'." One version was
released in the U.S. and the other in the UK. In December 1966 The Jordan
Brothers, a veteran rock 'n' roll band from Frackville, PA, a town 60 miles
from York, became the first to release "Gimme Some Lovin'" as a single.
The record was just catching on when it was eclipsed by a version
waxed by the Spencer Davis Group, a Brit band that featured the
vocals of budding solo star Steve Winwood who wrote the song.

As much fun as the Dell was in summer...
it was pure magic in winter, and here's
another song from the same time period
that "Gimme Some Lovin'" was popular -
the frigid nights of January and February
1967. I can still see Dell rats huddled in
front of the fireplace to keep warm.
Outside it's chilling. The mercury is
dropping down to minus ten below
(the "feels like" temp). It's snowing
hard. Your parents called you crazy
for going out on a wicked night like
this, but you had to make the scene.
Feel the warmth radiating from that
roaring blaze. John just threw another
big log on the fire. Wet snow clung to
the wood and it’s starting to sizzle.
Can you hear the sound, Dell rats?

ReplyDeleteSPMM - was it on purpose that it looks like SPAM?
Hi, Alex!
DeleteThanks for being the early bird again this week, good buddy! Wiki sez "Gimme Some Lovin'" was often performed live by Ike & Tina Turner as part of the opening dance medley of their show. Their live version was also released on a 1969 album. Libby Newton-John put the song on her 1978 album Totally Hot. Krokus did a version for Big Rocks, a 2017 album in which the Swiss hard rock/heavy metal band covers rock songs made famous by other artists.
I hope you don't think my posts amount to SPAM, good buddy. :) Thanks again for coming over early on your Saturday, Alex, and enjoy your weekend!
Hi Dell Rat Tom! Anyone who liked or loved The Temptations could enjoy all of their work! I can't even name all of their hits I have loved-but, if they were played, I would know them blindfolded! "My Girl" is probably one of the first of their hits to hit me hard! If I had heard any others early on, I wouldn't have known who it was. Great song! I don't remember Kim Weston's "Helpless", but I liked it a lot. She is so good, and her duet with Marvin Gaye was certainly one of the best duets ever!
ReplyDeleteGosh, I never heard of the Jordon Brothers, but they are good...Wow! Who knew? Good sound and instrumentals on their "Gimme Some Lovin". However!!! The Spencer Davis Group made this song POP! Not only with instrumentals, but with the backup support and Steve Winwood's lead vocals tearing it up! My favorite on today's lineup for sure! This is one of the best dance songs ever, just to add another punch!
You featured most of my favorites today, Shady! Tommy James has been on my "Love List" forever also! "Hanky Panky", of course, is a great of this group. But sometimes I hear it does take some time for a song to finally hit the top! I don't remember hearing "Hanky Panky" in 1964, but I loved it when it finally hit my ears I believe in 1966. Tommy James went on to do some great stuff, but I think he fizzled out a bit when heavy metal came barreling in!
Shady, The Mag Men are everything you say they are, full of soul and making good on their delivery. "Cry With Me Baby" is such a good song for them, flawless in my opinion. And the video showing "True Love" and "Romance" magazines is very cool.
Thank you for this great post, Shady...OOPS! I mean "Dell Rat Tom". I'm glad you've had some cooler weather. We've had plenty of rain, and today is in the lovely 70's. Have a wonderful weekend, and take care dear friend! ♫
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteThanks for coming to Dell Rat Tom's 4th platter party on SPMM Retrosonic Radio, dear friend!
I need to take a moment to explain why I am replying almost a day late so that you and others who have commented will understand what's been going on. We've had another death in the family. You might recall Mrs. Shady's sister passing away in the fall of 2018. Friday evening her husband, our brother-in-law, died following a long illness. We drove to another city and visited him in a hospice facility hours before his life ended. Yesterday we had scheduled a big cookout at our house for the entire family to attend to celebrate two birthdays, those of Mrs. Shady's children, which both fall in late February. The birthday celebration turned into a wake for the departed family member. Mrs. Shady cooked a feast for 20 people and we had a full house all day and into the evening. By the time everyone left and we had cleaned up, I was exhausted and didn't feel like doing any blogging. I am up early this morning to begin replying to comments.
I was excited to find this pristine clip of The Temptations performing one of their best songs and best known hits "My Girl" on Swingin' Time, a Bandstand style TV show hosted by WKNR (Keener 13, Detroit) personality Robin Seymour. Robin also hosts one of the volumes of the Cruisin' record album series that I showcase here on the blog. People commenting on YouTube are raving, as am I, about the slick dance moves and body language used by David Ruffin, Paul Williams (directly to his right) and the other Temps as they do the song. It is a sight to behold, one of the finest performances in the history of soul.
I'm happy to introduce you to the Dell biggie "Helpless" recorded by underrated Motown songbird Kim Weston. That song was part of the jukebox mix during the late winter and early spring of 1966, the most exciting period of my Dell experience, because the music scene was exploding with great new artists and songs in the soul, R&B, pop, garage, folk-rock and British rock categories.
(Comment continued in next box.)
(Suzanne reply continued)
DeleteMoving on to the featured song in this post, "Gimme Some Lovin'"... I want you to consider that the version of a song you hear first, the one you come to know and love before other versions are introduced to your ears, tends to be the one you favor and hold dear. That's what happened with The Jordan Brothers' record at the Shady Dell. Theirs is the first released version of the song on a 7-inch single. Dell rats liked The Jordans' version all the more because the brother band came from nearby Frackville, qualifying them as another set of hometown heroes to go along with the Magnificent Men. So when you take into account that The Jordan Brothers were first out with the 45, that the guys are sentimental favorites because they are a regional act, and top it off with the fact that the record rocks, you can see why it is ranked #63 while the Spencer Davis Group's version placed a little lower at #78 (which is still a major Dell hit).
I was also very pleased to find that clip of Tommy James And The Shondells doing their first smash hit "Hanky Panky," a video that includes excellent rare scenes of teenage dancers. It also contains interviews with Tommy and the Pittsburgh radio personalities who broke the single and catapulted it to a national hit after it spent three years as a local/regional record struggling to gain traction.
I'm glad you liked the Mag Men song "Cry With Me Baby" and the video I produced years ago using pulp romance comic and magazine covers. It was fun to produce.
I'm happy to know you are enjoying fine weather. So are we. It has been delightfully cool the last several days, but the temp is predicted to climb into the upper 80s by the middle of next week. Winter's on the run!
Thanks again for hustling over so early to listen to Tom's broadcast. I'm happy that you got so much enjoyment out of it. I wish you and Scootie a safe and happy week ahead, dear friend Suzanne!
Hi Tom. I am sorry to hear about the passing of your brother-in-law. I do remember the passing of Kathy's sister, and it was so sad. My sister and I lost two schoolmates within 3 weeks of each other in February, and they were brothers! They were older than I, but my sister dated one of them in high school. Their sister is my age and we were great friends, still are, so I knew her brothers also. She does have 2 brothers still living. I feel so bad for her, since I have lost my brother, and still feel the pain from that.
DeleteYou are correct to say that we tend to hang on to the version of a song we heard first, and I am guilty of that most of the time. But I find it so interesting to know when a song was previously recorded several years prior to my hearing it.
I hope you are recuperating from your busy weekend, Shady! 20 people is a lot to feed, you never know how an event can change from one theme to another just overnight. Have a great week dear friend. Again, I'm sorry for you and Kathy losing another family member. ♫
Thank you, Suzanne. Actually most family members had predicted that he (our BIL) would die before his wife, Kathy's sister, because he has been in poor health for years. But as it turned out she took ill and was the first to go while he lingered 16 months longer. Most agree it is a blessing that his suffering has finally ended.
DeleteI'm very sorry to learn about the two brothers you and your sister knew that died three weeks apart. I'll never forget the period a few years ago when one of my aunts died along with a close high school friend and a classmate that I had dated. All three of their deaths took place within a three week span as I recall. To make the story more bizarre, all three lived in the same neighborhood only a couple of blocks from each other.
Yessum, we had a full house yesterday and that included three frisky little boys. It was noisy and chaotic and after the guests left the cleanup took hours. I needed to hit the hay. Thanks for understanding.
I hope you and Scootie and well and in good spirits this Sunday, dear friend Suzanne. Thanks again for tuning in to Dell Rat Tom's Jukebox Giants this weekend. Stay tuned for my next post coming your way Friday. I hope to see you then!
Like the Jordon Brothers, "Gimme Some Lovin'", but still prefer Spencer Davis. Love, love, love "My Girl". Always have. And of course "Hanky Panky" is great. I thought "Cry With Me Baby" was just OK, but stayed through the whole thing because I liked looking at all the romance comics covers. Growing up I wouldn't have been caught dead reading a romance comic (and I can't say I've ever known any girls, including my two sisters, that ever read them) so I have to make up for time lost now. As for that "It's Now Winter's Day" video, that's a major snow storm going on there! And yet there's a school bus. I think in real life the kids would have gotten a snow day (unless it came suddenly.) Not that there aren't days like that north of the Mason-Dixon line, and it can be unpleasant when there are, but whenever I see scenes like that in movies and TV shows portrayed as being "typical" of winter, as if there's a raging snowstorm 24 hours a day three months straight, I have to think the person who directed it grew up in a warm climate.
ReplyDeleteHi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for coming over and listening to Tom's Jukebox Giants, good buddy!
I'm happy that you found a few Dell hits that pleased your ears. As I mentioned to Suzanne (above), when an artist from your hometown or region releases a record, you are already stoked to hear it, rooting for it and tend to favor it over records made in other parts of the country or someplace else in the world. That phenomenon helped sell The Magnificent Men and Jordan Brothers to the teenage music fans of Central Pennsylvania. To my ears, and to the ears of other original Dell rats of the 60s, every song on that first Mag Men album is a "greatest hit," an absolute gem of the genre, including the one featured here, "Cry With Me Baby." You need a Dell rat's ears and a Dell rat's heart to fully appreciate the recording. That's the only way I have of explaining it. I'm glad you enjoyed the romance mag covers I selected for the video. It was a fun project done at the request of Dave Bupp, lead singer of the Mag Men, the lead vocalist you hear on that song. I get what you're saying about those pulp mags for girls. I don't have a sister, but I never saw any girl reading one. I do, however, remember my female cousin reading Tiger Beat, Seventeen and other teen pop fanzines.
Regarding Tommy Roe's solid cold classic "It's Now Winter's Day," you make a keen observation about the school bus pulling up in a blizzard. It does seem odd. However I do remember a few winter school days that started out clear but needed to be shortened and the kids dismissed and bused home early when a freak blizzard swept in. I would love to know where the YouTube producer found the various scenes used in that video. They are excellent and really take me back home. The fireplace looks a lot like the one in the Dell barn. However in printing the song's lyrics across the screen, the uploader made a couple of mistakes which I pointed out in a Y/T comment. I have known this song like the back of my hand more than 50 years. It should read: "And here we are, snug and warm in each other's arms." It should also read: "Our love will grow stronger amid winter's chill." One of my pet peeves is seeing incorrect song lyrics for oldies repeated across the web by people who weren't there and don't really care. It matters to me.
Thanks again for joining the fun, good buddy Kirk!
Yep, I also think of The Blues Brothers when I hear "Gimme Some Lovin'", but of the two featured here, I prefer the Spencer Davis version.
ReplyDeleteAnd who doesn't love a little "My Girl" from the Temptations!! :D
Hi, Kelly!
DeleteThanks for coming over, dear friend! (Please check my reply to Suzanne above which explains why I am tardy in replying to your comment.)
I don't remember The Blues Brothers doing "Gimme Some Lovin'"... but maybe that's because I never watched the film in its entirety. I simply didn't like it! It makes sense that you prefer the Spencer Davis version over the one released by our homeboys The Jordan Brothers. If you had been a teenager in the 60s and The Jordans hailed from Arkansas, you might have prefered their record as do I and other hardcore rats of Central PA.
<< who doesn't love a little "My Girl" from the Temptations >>
My best answer to your rhetorical question is "nobody." :)
Thank you again for dropping by on day one of the post's run, dear friend Kelly. Have a wonderful week!
Happy Leap Day, Shady! Some of my favourite songs and they helped me get into the groove on such a special day. :)
ReplyDeleteGimme All Your Loving has been on my playlists since high school. I remember listening to this song when I was in art classes. Ah, good memories! Thank you, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteHappy Leap Day (+1) to you, dear friend! Please see my reply to Suzanne above to understand why I have been held up on the blog circuit.
Did your fingers misspeak there, dearie? "Gimme All Your Lovin'"... the ZZ Top hit of the 80s... is an entirely different song, not the one I posted here by The Jordan Brothers and The Spencer Davis Group. Click on them and listen and you should immediately hear the difference.
Have a safe and happy week, dear friend JM!
I'm not a fan of ZZ Top, so total slip up! 😂
DeleteI'm sorry to hear about your brother in law, Dell Rat Tom. I'm sending my condolences to you and Mrs Shady. ðŸ˜
Thank you, JM. The hospice visit Friday in his final hours was disconcerting and we all agree that it's a blessing that his suffering has now ended. At the day long wake feast Mrs. Shady and I hosted yesterday and lastg evening most in attendance adopted a positive mindset and managed to have a good time.
DeleteThanks for correcting the error and helping me understand your comment.
I'm glad that there was some positivity, still sad, however. I hope that you are Mrs. Shady are doing well.
DeleteHope you're all holding up today. Thinking of you all.
Deletehave a great Thankful Thursday.
Happy Lead Day Tom! Good tunes tonight as I get ready to head to bed..yep, I know it's early but I'm a year older today so I'm getting as much beauty sleep as I can! I remember a few of these tunes and I know you've featured the Mag Men before. You have to support the home team when they put out a good song even if the rest of the world doesn't give them the time of day. The Jordan Brothers version was good too but I think I have to go with the Spenser Davis group. (Sorry!) When I watched the video from It's Now Winter's Day my first thought was that back then it snowed more than now and kids actually went to school on days like that! I enjoyed the music too as I imagined a group of your peers making it to the Dell to keep warm with their honeys! I hope you're having a good weekend and I hope you enjoyed this extra day we've been given this year! Take Care!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteThank you very much for coming by for a visit, dear friend, and happy Leap Day to you! I see you have a new post running and I will be over a.s.a.p. I am playing catch-up because we've had another death in the family and the last two days have been filled with related activity. Please read the full explanation in my reply to Suzanne (above).
Happy birthday, YaYa! Joy to the world that a fine person like you is among us! I was just going to say that I remembered you have a b-day coming up at the end of the month but, lo and behold, February is already behind us. Mrs. Shady's son and daughter also celebrated their birthdays last month and today is her brother's birthday.
Regarding the discussion of The Magnificent Men and The Jordan Brothers, you really get what I have been trying to express to others. You gotta root for the home team. In the case of The Mag Men and The Jordans, they made it very easy for their fans do that because they released great recordings.
Hey, regarding Tommy Roe's record and that superb custom video, you made a great point about there being more snow in decades past. It certainly seems true, lending proof that global warming is a thing. That time lapse scene of snow piling up outside somebody's house reminded me of your deck at The Pines. Did you shoot that footage the YouTuber used in the video? :) Few Dell songs are as evocative as "It's Now Winter's Day" because it captures so nicely the experience of the Dell (and Central Pennsylvania) in winter during the 60s. It's true, no matter how much my folks complained, I was determined to get to the Dell and make the scene. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stayed this devoted rat from the swift completion of my appointed rounds - The Shady Dell, The Oaks, Gino's 15 Cent Hamburgers, Avalong Dairy Drive-in and back to The Dell. :) I truly am "anchored" to the memory of the warmth of the blaze in Dell's fireplace, the smell of perfume in a Dellettes' hair, and how good it felt to hold her close and sway to the music as tender ballads like Tommy's played on the jukebox. I sometimes wish I could go back there and stay forever.
Read all about my "extra day" in my reply to Suzanne above, but thank you anyway for the kind words. Happy birthday, dear YaYa, and thank you again for swinging by!
Happy Sunday my friend. So sorry for your loss. I understand what you mean about the first artist you hear doing a song oftentimes is your favorite and that's how I feel with the Spencer Davis Group and "Gimme Some Lovin." Oddly, I didn't even realize that was Steve Winwood singing! Hearing it makes me want to get up and dance. I have "My Girl" as the ringtone for my youngest daughter. Makes me smile every time she calls ") Have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteHi, Janet!
DeleteI'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for tuning in to Dell Rat Tom's SPMM radio show bringing you the most popular records played on the jukebox at The Shady Dell in the mid 60s.
Thanks for the kind words about our loss. My BIL and SIL have been a cherished part of our family get togethers for as long as I have known Mrs. Shady, dating all the way back to when our courtship began in 1987. MY SIL died in the fall of 2018 and now her husband has also died, survived by their children, our three nieces, and their families.
I'm glad you chimed in about the first recorded version of a song with which you become familiar having the incumbent advantage. I'm not surprised that the SDG version of "Gimme" is your favorite. I don't think very many people on the West Coast ever got to hear the Jordan Brothers version, thereby relegating it to the Bubbling Under chart. The SDG record was also a major Dell hit, but another of the band's singles, "I'm A Man," was even more popular than "Gimme" and is therefore ranked higher at #73 on my list of The 200 Greatest Hits of the Shady Dell.
That's right! I remember you telling me that your daughter's ringtone is "My Girl." That's so cool!
Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Janet, and have a splendid week yourself!
I'm sorry I hadn't read the previous comments about the passing of your brother-in-law. Losing two family members so close is very hard. I can only imagine all you and your wife have been through. Please give Kathy my condolences and know I will keep your family in my prayers. Times like this we really rely on the comfort from family and friends and your blog friends are also here to help in any way we can. Take care and I hope your week is a good one.
ReplyDeleteThank you, dear YaYa! You're right. It is especially sad to lose a husband and wife pair that were an integral part of our family for many years and to have them die a little more than a year apart leaving our three nieces without a mother or a father. We're doing okay. We have reframed Friday's death as a blessing because it ended a long period of illness and suffering for our brother-in-law. At Saturday's wake feast I kept imagining the two departed family members there among us as they were for so many years, laughing and chatting. The void cannot be filled but we will get by. Time is on our side.
DeleteThank you again for returning to express sympathies, dear friend YaYa!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteThe Jordan Brothers had a nice sound but this is the first time I think I've heard of the band, so thank you for the introduction. I recognize Tommy Roe by name,so I had to know why that it since 'It's Now Winter's Day' didn't ring a bell. The song I know by Roe is of course is his international hit, 'Dizzy'. The Temptations 'My Girl' is the only one I knew right off and a great classic. Thanks for sharing the mewsic with me. What a great way to start the week, my friend. Have a boogietastic week and thanks for dropping by for a visit and voting in my March 1st BoTB!!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteI'm happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for checking out the play list in this edition of Tom's Jukebox Giants.
I think most purists would agree that the bubblegum song "Dizzy" was not Tommy Roe's greatest recording, even though it was his biggest international hit. I could name more than a dozen other recordings by Tommy that I like more including "It's Now Winter's Day" (my favorite) plus "Sweet Pea" (another Dell song), "Everybody" and some of his early rockabilly style material. I'm glad you remember "My Girl," one of the biggest and best by The Temptations. As you might recall, "My Girl" was used as the title song of a 1991 film that starred SNL veteran Dan Aykroyd along with Jamie Lee Curtis, Macaulay Culkin, and Anna Chlumsky.
Thanks again for stopping by, dear friend Cathy!
Greetings, friend Shady. Sorry, am late. Have been busy shoveling snow as well as hibernating and dreaming of Spring:) Thanks for your music selections as always. Love, cat.
ReplyDeleteHi, cat!
DeleteIt's nice to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming down for a visit. If you enjoy shoveling snow, (for the exercise), then I am happy for you. If you don't enjoy shoveling snow, then I'm sorry you are dealing with so much of the white stuff. Hibernating can be fun, but I know you are eager for spring to arrive up there in Alberta.
I'm glad you enjoyed Tom's tuneage. Lubbins to you, dear friend cat. Keep warm and have a great week!
Tom,
DeleteI forgot about "Sweet Pea". That's another good song by Tommy Roe but I still may like "Dizzy" a wee better. "Everybody" is an introduction to my ears this morning. I've heard of the movie "My Girl" and I knew Macaulay Culkin starred in the film but for some reason I don't recall the other big stars. I might have to check this movie out. Thanks for making me curious about the movie and the song titles, my friend. Have a wonderful week and thanks for taking a peek at my artwork today, ole pal! :)
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteThe pleasure was all mine, dear friend. I am an art lover with a fondness for pinup illustration, and your A to Z entries will surely be loads of fun for me and other readers.
It's been decades wince I saw My Girl in the theater and I don't remember it very well. Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis are two of my favorites and I try to catch all of their films. Aykroyd's comedy Dragnet is a movie that I highly recommend along with Jamie's horror feature Terror Train and her heist film A Fish Called Wanda.
Have a super day, dear friend Cathy!
Hey, I’m here to enjoy listening to the tunes you grew up with while at the Shady glen. Having it cold outside but with a log on the fire and hearing it sizzle makes me long for the sawmill I grew up,on. I brought the firewood in and placed it on the fire and loved that sizzle sound. If you got too cold you could always dance. Love some of these songs like Hanky Panky. I know almost all of these songs and they are fun to listen to and dance to
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteThanks for coming down from Canada to hear what's on Tom's musical menu, dear friend!
Thanks too for sharing memories of growing up around a sawmill. Did you happen to live in Twin Peaks? :) I'm glad my description of the snow coated logs hissing and sizzling in the fireplace brought back your own experiences and I'm excited that you know and like Tom's tunes.
Thanks again for reporting in, dear friend BB, and enjoy the rest of your week!
Lots of videos today! I had no idea there were music videos this old. Fun seeing Hanky Panky and having a face go with the singer. Enjoy your week!
ReplyDeleteHi, Sherry!
DeleteHow are you, dear friend? Thanks for coming!
Yessum, there are some rare old video clips in this edition of Jukebox Giants including performances by Tommy James And The Shondells, The Spencer Davis Group and The Temptations, the latter appearing on the Detroit market's Swingin' Time music TV show. I enjoyed the Tommy James video segment because he explains how his 1963 recording of "Hanky Panky" finally caught on in 1966 and that he needed to find a new group of Shondells for public appearances.
Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Sherry!
