Just What the Doctor Ordered: Feel Good Songs Prescribed by Mr. Personality - Dr. Don Rose!

LISTEN TO THIS BRIEF SEGMENT TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH DON ROSE'S VOICE:

A rosey
good morning
to you! This is
Dr. Donald
D. Rose
aka Dr. Don Rose
aka Dr. Don aka
Mr. Personality.

I'm one of the veteran Top 40 DJs featured in the Cruisin' series.
In a nutshell I rosied to fame in the mid 60s at WQXI Atlanta
("Quixie In Dixie"). From the late 60s to early 70s I was
part of "The Pop Music Explosion" at WFIL radio
in Philadelphia, and from 1973 to 1986 I was
known as The King of Bay Area Radio...
one of the jocks at KFRC in San Francisco.

I'm pleased as punch to
inform you that, starting
next year, I'll be joining
The Shady Bunch crew
here on S-P-M-M. My
new show will be called
Rose-Colored
Glasses.
It'll be based on my years
doing the morning drive
at "Quixie In Dixie"
in Atlanta.

Together we'll look at the past
thru Rose-Colored Glasses
and listen to the authentic
sound of top 40 radio in the
60s brought to you in vibrant
Futuresonic Stereo Surround.

It's just what the doctor
ordered... music to put
a smile on your face,
a song in your heart,
some pep in your step
and pride in your stride!

People stop me on the street and ask me why I
call myself Doctor Don. I tell them I studied to
become a surgeon, but failed to make the cut. (MOOOOO!) Behind the mic as your DJ doc,
I make sound decisions... all of them good.
Today I'm dispensing free samples. This is
the strongest lineup of tunes you can get
without a prescription. You'll find that my
injections of humor are all in vein, but my
jokes'll keep you in stitches. (MOOOOO!)
That's right, folks, a blend of music and
laughter is the best medicine, and that's
my modus operandi on Rose-Colored
Glasses, so take these seven songs and
call me in the morning. (MOOOOO!)

Bunches of 60s records have a cold open aka cold intro. I'll be playing a lot
of them on Rose-Colored Glasses and I included a few in today's preview.
My new show on S-P-M-M will feature the best music of the 60s in a
variety of categories including soul and R&B, so let's get right
down to the real nitty gritty with this Shirley Ellis top 10 ditty!

  1. I never knew Shelly Long was such a good dancer. She may have missed her calling when she took that Cheers gig.

I thought for a second there Grace Slick joined the convent (she certainly has the first name for it.) But I just love that song.

I also love the Chiffons, but I think they plagiarized that song from George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord". Where they got the time machine, I don't know.

    Nice selection today, Dr. Rose

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for showing up on the first day to claim early bird honors, good buddy!

I am very excited to introduce a familiar voice from my youth and one of my favorite radio and TV announcers, Dr. Don Rose. Living in Central PA, I couldn't pull in the signal from Quixie in Dixie, but I did hear Don every weekday afternoon on a Philadelphia TV station voicing promos at the end of the Speed Racer cartoon show. I am very thankful that Shady Del Knight tapped Don to be a new Shady Bunch deejay beginning next year.

I'm glad that clip from Troop Beverly Hills caught your eye. I too was surprised to see how well Shelley Long danced. Shelley is very close to my age and turns 70 this month! I hope you also noticed the two budding starlets in that group of brownie scouts dancing along to the song. Front and center they are Kellie Martin of Life Goes On and ER fame, and future sultry siren Carla Gugino of Spy Kids, Karen Sisco, Wayward Pines and The Haunting of Hill House. I also recently saw Carla in a sexy psycho thriller film called Gerald's Game.

Jefferson Airplane was just catching on when they made that appearance on American Bandstand. It's difficult to imagine now but, at the time, that harder rock sound was brand new to teenagers' ears. In 1984 I worked with The Chiffons when they appeared in an oldies revival show I stage managed. One of the women had a broken leg and performed on crutches - a genuine trouper. I will touch on that plagiarism controversy in a future volume of my series Hey, That Sounds Just Like.

Thanks again for coming, Kirk. I'm pleased to know you enjoyed looking at the past through Rose-Colored Glasses. Stay tuned for more great top 40 tunes from Don Rose coming in 2020. They're just what the doctor ordered!

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks so much for coming over, dear friend! I hope you found Dr. Don Rose entertaining, because he'll be back as a regular member of the SPMM deejay team starting next year.

As I started telling Kirk (above) I was working with a music promoter in the mid 80s. In 1984 I had the honor of meeting and working with The Chiffons. The classic girl group was one of the featured acts in an oldies concert we staged at a venue in St. Petersburg. Hours before the show, I sat in the empty auditorium watching and listening as The Chiffons rehearsed. Seated next to me was Jewel Akens, the recording artist who had a big hit with "The Birds And The Bees." He was a very nice guy and I enjoyed our chat. It makes me sad to know that Jewel died in 2013 at the age of 79. That entire day in 1984 was surreal.
I was starstruck, surrounded by music legends which also included rock 'n' roll star Freddy Cannon. After the show the promoter, Freddy and I went to a restaurant for dinner. I sat next to Freddy as we dined. "I'm not worthy!"

I am also happy that you enjoyed the enhanced version of "Carrie-Anne" by England's Hollies, and surprised and delighted that you liked Grace Slick and The Airplane. I am still trying to fathom your eclectic taste in music. You apparently like everything from Christian bands to hard rock and most everything in between, including Peaches & Herb. :)

Bringing back fond memories is the name of the game here at Shady's Place. I'm glad I could do that for you today. Thank you again for joining the fun, dear friend Kelly, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  3. Hi Shady,

I can't wait to listen to more of this program! I think "Rose Coloured Glasses" will be fun. 😁

Jefferson Airplane and Leslie Gore are my favourites. Thanks for that smile. I am not familiar with the other songs, but I enjoy the sound.

    Have a great thankful Thursday!

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for coming, dear friend! I'm glad you enjoyed this sneak preview of Dr. Don Rose's new show Rose-Colored Glasses coming next year to SPMM Radio. You are too young to remember Don Rose but, if you ask your dad, he might remember Don as a radio personality on WFIL and as a voice-over announcer on WKBS Channel 48 (Kaiser Broadcasting) in Philadelphia, the same station that carried The Hy Lit Show.

I'm glad you like The Airplane and Lesley Gore singing "Look Of Love." It's one of my top favorites by Lesley.

Thanks again for dropping by and have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend JM!

    2. Hi Shady,

The 50 year anniversary of Woodstock is in two weeks! I hope you will have something special for that. :)

I had a busy weekend, but I know this will be my soundtrack for the week ahead. I look forward to seeing what this week will bring and this playlist will help me celebrate. I'll e-mail you.

Have a great Sunday evening, dear friend!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I remembered that the 50th anniversary of Woodstock is coming up, but I don't have any specific tribute post for the occasion. I'm glad to know the tunes Dr. Don offered in this playlist will form the soundtrack of the week ahead. I've been running them through my mind ever since publishing day.

Thanks again for dropping in and have a super week, dear friend JM!

  4. Hi Dr. Don! So good to see you at Shady's Place...I always enjoy a new face, and good sounds. I have a couple of the Cruisin CD's and I love to hear the DJ's talk and announce the songs I've always loved.

I have to say, right away, the "Nitty Gritty" is my favorite of your picks today. I love this spunky, exciting song, and Shirley Ellis has just the voice to pull it off. We danced and sang to this one any time it played.

You really gave us a good taste of what's to come, Doc! "He's So Fine" is another one of the best in the early 60's, qualifying for a lot of radio time. I guess you know what us ladies are going to want to hear. And, Lesley Gore never disappoints, does she!

I always liked the Hollies and most everything they did. Those were the days you guys. These songs are just the ones we all liked in the early and mid 60's. Haha, I like Kirk's comment about Grace Slick joining the convent. She could really perform and belt the songs out! And, she was one of the pioneers of female performers who could wear whatever the heck they wanted to and no one could change it! Kudos to you Grace! Great song, and great band!

Dr. Don, you're off to a great start! I can't speak for everyone, (but I'm sure they will agree), but I know at this hangout, I will "Keep On Dancing"!

Thanks Don and Shady for a great time, with some of the best music! Have a great weekend, and please excuse my tardiness today! Take care, dear friend!♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm happy to see you dear friend! Thanks for swinging by to sample the sounds spun by Top 40 radio vet Dr. Don Rose!

I'm delighted that you enjoyed viewing the past through Rose-Colored Glasses and treating your ears to some of the 60s greatest hits. If you own Cruisin' CDs, that's cool, because you are already familiar with the format upon which this new SPMM Radio show will be based. The problem with the Cruisin' CDs, as I have stated before, is that the producers were unable to obtain licensing for all the recordings used in the original volumes of the series which were released from 1970 to 1972 on vinyl albums. Therefore, some of the songs on the CD releases are different and, most importantly, the shows are choppy, with jarring edits in spots where different songs are substituted. Dr. Don Rose's 1967 volume from "Quixie in Dixie" - WQXI Atlanta - is probably my favorite of the entire series.

How about that male dancer in the "Nitty Gritty" video? He's a standout for sure! Can you imagine how exciting it was for me that day in 1984 to be seated in an empty auditorium in St. Pete and experiencing what amounted to a command performance by The Chiffons on stage singing:

      He's so fine
      (Do-lang, do-lang, do-lang)
      Wish he were mine
      (Do-lang, do-lang, do-lang)

It was otherworldly, and to have singer Jewel Aken sitting next to me watching The Chiffons and chatting with me added to the surrealism. To top it off, I was able to meet and work with the other acts on the show including The Coasters, The Earls, The Flamingos, The Tokens and Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon, with whom I had dinner later on that evening. It was truly an unforgettable event in my life!

I agree about The Hollies. They cranked out many excellent, feel-good pop and pop-rock hits - just what the doctor ordered. I remain very nostalgic about the early to mid 60s. Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end, and as Grace Slick said, "If you remember the Sixties - you weren't there." :)

If you liked what you heard today - the song selection, Dr. Don's corny jokes and the "MOOOOO" of his pet cow "Lulu-Belle" - and if you wanna "Keep On Dancing," then I hope you will stay tuned for the official debut of Rose-Colored Glasses starting in 2020 here at Shady's Place.

Thank you again for your cheery visit and kind comments, dear friend Suzanne. I wish you and Scootie a safe and happy weekend as well!

How are you today, dear friend? Thanks for coming all the way down from Canada to experience Dr. Don Rose and his authentic Quixie in Dixie play list!

I'm happy to know you love that biggie by Jefferson Airplane. Thanks for reminding me of their great single "Count On Me" released during the period they were calling themselves Jefferson Starship. When I was in entertainment production I created a promotional video for the launch of our MTV-style station using "We Built This City."

I hope you enjoyed Don Rose's DJ banter and tune selection from the heart of the 60s. Stick around for Don's first official blogcast coming up next year on SPMM Retrosonic Radio.

I am very happy that you remember Dr. Donald D. Rose from his years on WFIL radio. I am proud to inform you that Don will be joining The Shady Bunch as a DJ on SPMM Retrosonic Radio beginning in 2020. As I stated in another reply, I remember hearing Don's voice on TV doing promotional announcements over the closing credits of the Speed Racer cartoon series broadcast on Philadelphia station WKBS Channel 48 (Kaiser Broadcasting). I liked Don's upbeat personality and down home sense of humor. If you appreciate his corny jokes and like the songs he plays, stick around. You're invited to view the past through Rose-Colored Glasses starting next year.

  7. Tom,

Lawsy mercy, the doctor sure knew exactly what I needed prescribing these 'feel good' tunes! The first video had me smiling. "The Nitty Gritty" is new to me but I loved watching those crazy dancers. The one guy up front really tickled me with his wilder movements. He was really getting into the groove. The clip with Shelley Long teaching the young girls some old, old school dance moves is cute and she's not a bad dancer. It seems after the 90s she fell off the face of the earth but Wikipedia revealed that she's done a little in the millenium. I always liked her on Cheers. That was such a fun show and what's interesting is I've never been in a 'bar'. Heck, I don't even drink. lol Thanks for sharing such a fun mewsical line up! Have a great week, my friend.

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for coming over dark and early on your Monday morning, dear friend. :) I am very happy to see you!

Feel good music is just what the doctor ordered after this nightmarish weekend in America. I'm glad you enjoyed the lineup of mid 60s oldies played by one of my favorite top 40 DJs, Dr. Don Rose.

Yessum, I knew that male dancer would catch your eye doing the "Nitty Gritty." Many people on YouTube have commented on his flamboyant style. Usually it is the women who grab the attention in a formation of professional dancers. I'm also happy to know you enjoyed the energetic dancing of Shelley Long in that scene from Troop Beverly Hills. After leaving Cheers, Shelley appeared in the same role (as Diane) on the spin-off series Frasier. In more recent years she had a recurring role on Modern Family and was featured in a total of eight episodes. The two little girls dancing front and center in that group of girl scouts in Troop Beverly Hills are future adult acting stars Kellie Martin and Carla Gugino. I am sure you have seen both actresses in various TV series and movies over the years. Of course, Cheers alumni Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson have had stellar careers since making an initial impression in that classic comedy series. Mrs. Shady and I watch Ted practically every evening on CSI. We also liked him in CSI:Cyber, Fargo and Damages. It is indeed an interesting fact that you have never been in a bar and don't drink. I applaud you for that. I wasted many years of my life hanging out in bars. I am proud to report that I have not taken a drink in more than 27 years.

I'm glad you had a good time at Shady's Place and enjoyed the mewsic picked for your listening and dancing pleasure by Dr. Don. Stick around because he officially joins The Shady Bunch DJ staff next year with his SPMM radio show Rose-Colored Glasses. Thanks again and have a boogietastic week, dear friend Cathy!

Thanks a lot for dropping in, dear friend. I'm pleased to see you!

I suspected you'd take a liking to Dr. Donald D. Rose, the veteran radio personality who greeted listeners with a "Rosey good morning," put a smile on their faces with his corny jokes and, by all accounts, was universally loved. You're right, YaYa. Don is one doctor you don't mind spending the whole day with. I am excited about bringing an authentic version of Ron's Atlanta based "Quixie in Dixie" show to SPMM Radio starting in 2020. Maybe I should call Don's debut show "2020 Hindsight." Don's playlist of tunes is culled from the mid and late 60s - guaranteeing a flood of happy memories for folks like you and me who were in our teens at the time. I am in line for an eye exam myself later this month. I know we will both benefit from viewing the past through Don's Rose-Colored Glasses.

Thanks again for your cheery visit and comment, dear friend YaYa, and enjoy the rest of your week!
