Kicking-off the show, "Splish Splash" - a special request
phoned in by a loyal SPMM listener on our toll-free hotline.

And, believe it or not, that was actor Kevin Spacey doing his own
singing in the starring role of legendary entertainer Bobby Darin
in scenes from the 2004 biopic Beyond The Sea.

Hi, I'm Dawn of Rock & Roll...
one of Shady's Angels...

Another phone request just came in, and I'm gonna let
Family Guy's Brian Griffin take over the mic. Go Brian!

Hi, Folks!  Don't worry... I'm not as drunk as some thinkle peep I am.
As you might remember, I specialize in playing croon tunes and
swinging big band sounds as host of

 BRIAN GRIFFIN'S

 ECLECTIC AVENUE

here on SPMM Retrosonic Radio. A caller just rang us up and requested
another featured song from the soundtrack of the 2004 Bobby Darin
docudrama Beyond The Sea, the English-language version of the
French song "La Mer" by Charles Trenet that was a
top 10 hit for Bobby in the winter of 1960.

THIS JUST IN!

"Beyond The Sea" - The Creature Sings
featuring Gill Mann (Sept. 2022)

Hi, I'm Gillian Gracin from the Shady's Place series

 All American Girls!

I am also the cute yoga instructor who bothers, bewitches,
bewilders and tempts the pants off of a married man
in the romantic comedy movie Life's an Itch.

My favorite position is downward-facing dog.

You might even remember me as Kara,
the coming-of-age girl next door in
American Reunion aka American Pie 4.

The song I'd like to play was co-written
and first recorded by English singer
Sophie Ellis-Bexton. Released in late
2001, Sophie's disco ditty became a
major worldwide hit and is reported
to have been the most played
song in Europe in 2002.

He doesn't speak. He believes actions speak louder than words.
(SPOILER ALERT: His actions scream bloody murder!

Every song I play has the word "Baby" or "Girl" in the title.
I've got another relic from the Nifty Fifties - early 1959 to be
more precise. This song is played in the opening scene of Gila!...
the 2012 remake of the 1959 horror flick The Giant Gila Monster.

Here's an ultra-rare clip of Canadian-American singer/songwriter Jack Scott
appearing on Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show singing a song

    1. Hi, Alex!

You win the gold medal and the blue ribbon, good buddy! Thanks for being first to enter Shady's clubhouse this time.

Yep, Retrosonic Radio Roulette offers a mix of music styles and a variety of presenters, from the micest of them all - Belle Rat the Dell Rat - to Beverly Wood, the 50 Foot Camgirl. If you haven't yet seen it, the TV series Scream Queens has quite a few big names in the cast including Emma Roberts from American Horror Story, Lea Michele from Glee, Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine, Billie Lourd (Carrie Fisher's daughter) and veteran scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis from Halloween and its sequels, Terror Train and other spookers. Pop singing sensations Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas and actors Kirstie Alley and John Stamos have guest roles in the series along with masked slashers Red Devil and Green Meanie. It's a hoot!

Yes, I have been familiar with Tom Savini for decades. He did the monster makeup for many films I have watched over the years including Dawn Of The Dead, Friday the 13th, The Prowler, Creepshow, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Day Of The Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and others. I saw him act in the film you mentioned - From Dusk Till Dawn - as well as Ted Bundy, Grindhouse and others.

Thanks again for reporting for duty early, good buddy Alex. Have a nice October and look for Pt. 2 of my Shadyween series at the end of the month!

  2. Hi friend Shady! Happy October to you. Very eclectic bunch of songs. I think the Something Stupid cover was really good. Fun fact about Bobby Darin, I worked for a cardiologist many years ago who had been one of his physicians. Also, that clip made me want to watch the movie which I had not seen so I found I could catch it on Amazon Prime. Thanks! Not much new around here that's why I'm still not blogging.
Hope you and Mrs. Shady are doing well.

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks a lot for coming, dear friend. As second place finisher, you take home the silver! Would you believe it, I just now found your comment in my spam folder. Seems the blog gremlins are determined to make it difficult for us to communicate. On top of that, my comments are now being sorted as spam on four different blogs including yours. It's craziness!

Anyhow, I am very happy to see you again this month as I launch a new series called Retrosonic Radio Roulette, a mixed bag with something for practically every musical taste. Thanks for singling out the song Belle Rat introduced, a cover of a big hit by Frank and Nancy Sinatra recorded 23 years ago by Aussie star Nicole Kidman and English singer/songwriter Robbie Williams. I'm pleased that you liked their duet. Thanks for sharing your "brush with greatness," having worked with one of Bobby Darin's heart specialists. Thanks too for reminding me to watch Kevin Spacey's performance as Darin in Beyond The Sea. I've got Amazon Prime and will put it on my list.

Again I thank you for your devotion to my blog and our friendship. I will keep my eyes peeled in case you publish something on your site. If you do, please look for my comment in your junk bin where my submissions always seems to go. I hope you and my buddy Benny are both well and in good spirits, "joyful warriors" that you are. :)

Take care, dear friend Janet. Have a safe and happy October and join me again, if you will, when I bring you Part 2 of my 2024 Shadyween Salivation!

  3. I've been thinking about you a d wondering when I would see you again. Really enjoyed the pictures and the music. Love that Creature singing and enjoying the nightlife. I saw that Kevin Spavey film and he put a lot I to that film about Bobby Darren.ro bad, with all that tale t, he turned out to be a creep but I still like his movies.
Annalise is pretty good and so is that YouTube gal that we t viral.
Eric Roberts is in just about any movie and now he is on DWTS but he is not doing much dancing. I still think he might be more fun than his famous sis.
I'm not much I to the heavy metal gals but I'm glad they are representing themselves in a predominant male place. That clown is scary but funny at the same time.
The Canadian is a lot of fun a d I like the song and this version of So.ethin stupid is better than the one with the Sinatras...I my humble opinion. Nice ending with the Shania song which they did well with.
Hope you like my star of the month looking forward ro your spooky song takes. All the best!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for coming over early on day one, dear friend. The bronze belongs to you, and only you. Display it proudly!

I hope you noticed my second comment on your blog informing you that I commented on your Linda Darnell post first thing this morning. It went through to publication AOK but, when I returned a while later to read other comments, mine was missing! Please check your spam folder. It should be there waiting for you.

I'm delighted that you liked the Bobby Darin cover by Gill Mann, lead zinger of an act called The Creature Sings. For some reason, he reminds me of the guy who made regular appearances on The Gong Show as The Unknown Comic. I loved Kevin Spacey in House Of Cards. Thanks for letting me know you have seen him as crooner Bobby Darin in Beyond The Sea. Now I want to see the film more than ever.

Glad you give a favorable nod to the cover by Nashville's IMY2 trio and to viral YouTuber Lanie Gardner on her single "Six Feet Deep." I have been a fan of Eric Roberts ever since I witnessed his compelling performance in the 1983 bio-drama Star 80. Eric might be the busiest actor of all time. He appears in loads of films every year. His extensive credits listing on IMDB will boggle your mind!

Thanks for acknowledging Art The Clown, the ruthless slasher from four horror movies I have seen. The killer clown is as funny as he is deadly. (His victims die laughing.)

Yessum, that's Canadian-American rockabilly artist Jack Scott lip-syncing to the gum-chewing crowd of teenagers in an early 1959 clip from Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show. Jack's bigger hits and signature songs were "My True Love" and "What In The World's Come Over You." I loved his deep voice.

I'm thrilled that you and friend Janet (above) posted favorable remarks about the cover of "Somethin' Stupid" by the Nicole and Robbie duo. I am also pleased that you liked the recent release by the Romanian girl duo Shut Up & Kiss Me!... part of musician/producer Andrei Cerbu's ever-expanding music company.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment. Please remember to check your junk bin for my comment. I submitted it soon after your post was published this morning. Also, be on the lookout for my comments on tomorrow's BBC music post and on your Thursday movie feature. I hope you don't need to go hunting for all of them!

Please take good care of yourself and my pals Lexi and Harley, dear friend BB, and look for my Shadyween Pt. 2 post coming up around the 26th of this month!

  4. Happy October, Shady! I think you know I prefer my horror as the vintage variety rather than anything more modern.

I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised with Kevin Spacey's rendition of "Splish Splash". He did a great job!

    1. Hi, Kelly & Pat!

Happy Shadyween to you both, dear friends!

Yessum, I too was amazed by the authenticity of Kevin Spacey's cover of Bobby Darin's "Splish Splash" in a scene from the 2004 movie Beyond The Sea. If you have time, watch the real Bobby Darin performing "Splish Splash" on The Dick Clark Show and note the similarities between the two performances:

Yessum, Shadyween Salivation Part 2 will start running October 26 and I hope you enjoy the show. Thank you again for setting aside time to visit me today, dear friend Kelly. Have a great month and take good care of yourself and my buddies Pat, Fred, Grady and your other pooches!

  5. Seeing how I love this time of year and Halloween itself, I love the spooky feel of this post and the spooky pictures you posted.

I did not know that Kevin Spacey could sing.
Stalked By My Doctor sounds like something I would watch.
    The Warning is pretty good.
My daughter got me to watch Terrifier and it was good.
Oingo Boingo! I just added that song to my playlist. I forgot how much I liked it.

From Dusk Till Dawn: The series was so good. I loved that.

    1. Hi, Mary!

YAY! Your comment went right through again, dear friend! That's remarkable, considering that friend Janet's comment got snagged by my blog gremlins this time. Thanks for joining the October fun at Shady's Place!

Yessum, who knew that Kevin Spacey could sing?... much less do a spot-on imitation of rock & roll crooner Bobby Darin in the 2004 biopic Beyond The Sea?

I have seen the original and all of the sequels in Eric Roberts' movie series Stalked By My Doctor. They're a hoot, and I'm sure there will be more to come. The prolific actor seems to work non-stop.

That performance by The Warning of "Hell You Call A Dream" at the Pepsi Center, Mexico City, generated tons of excitement and inspired dozens if not hundreds of YouTube "reaction" and "first time hearing" videos, with all of the reviewers I watched giving the electrifying performance by the sister trio ultra high ratings.

I'm tickled that you and your daughter have both seen Terrifier. It remains my favorite film of the three. Yessum, I too forgot how much fun Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party" was. It's fun to see those brief clips from Back To School showing comic legend Rodney Dangerfield smothered in college babes. Glad you also liked From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series as much as I did. Belle Rat The Dell Rat sends smooches.

Thank you again for the kind visit and marvelous comment, dear friend Mary. I'm delighted that you enjoyed the creepy pics and gifs I found for this post. More scary stuff is coming your way in Part 2 which goes to publication October 26. Take care and have a wonderful October until we meet again!

  6. Hi Shady,

I was going to post this morning, but since the days are starting later and ending earlier, I sort of overslept this morning. With my teddy bear, David, I didn't feel like getting up. I'm going to have to start getting up with my alarm, then turn on my phone's flashlight and walk down the stairs.

Ah, you opened with one of my favourites. I remember singing and dancing to this song as a kid. I remember dad saying to me when it was time for a bath, "splish, splash, you're taking a bath." Some fond memories, Shady.

I loved this entry and a lot of these songs did bring back some great memories. Oingo Boingo is a classic. I also loved this theme and can't wait to see what you have in store for Halloween, part II.

Halloween in a new house and I'll be decorating soon! I'll be sure to play some of these songs too.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for coming over, dear friend!

Yessum, with the shorter days and cool nights of autumn and the cold nights of winter just around the corner, it's getting harder to crawl out of the sack in the morning. It happens all the time with Mrs. Shady and me.

Check with your dad and find out if he remembers the other Boomer era oldies in this post - "Beyond The Sea," "Goodbye Baby," "Sugar On Sunday" and "Somethin' Stupid." I'll bet he knows one or more of them.

Rodney Dangerfield is probably my all time favorite comedian, and I was excited to find this gloriously remastered "editor's cut" of the video by Oingo Boingo doing one of the soundtrack songs from Rodney's 1986 comedy film Back To School in which the LA-based new wave rock band performs at a rowdy party. By the way, in case you didn't know it, Oingo Boingo was also known as Clowns Of Death. That's fitting for the theme of this post, right?

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend JM. If you liked this taste of Shadyween, then Shirley you will love Part 2 which hits October 26. The images and songs are even more intense and not for the faint of heart. Have fun decorating your new abode and take good care of yourself and David until we reconnect a few weeks from now!

  7. It occurred to me while listening to "Murder on the Dancefloor" that, unlike Sophie Ellis Bextor's original, IMY2's somewhat velvety remake probably isn't all that suited for a dancefloor, but that's OK. I like it when a cover goes its own way rather than be a slavish remake of the original or else why do a cover in the first place?

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for staying up late to comment at the end of day one, good buddy, and welcome in as I debut Retrosonic Radio Roulette. I gave the series that name because I am gambling there will be at least one artist, song or celeb presenter that you, the reader, like.

Thanks for giving props to IMY2 and their exciting (and typically blue-haired) lead zinger Annalise Mahanes. I was swept away by their velvety cover of Sophie's "Murder On The Dancefloor." I am also happy to know it is a song with which you were already familiar. The single was a major international hit but, at the time of its original release in late 2001, completely missed the U.S. Pop chart, registering only on the Billboard Singles and Dance Club charts. However, more than 20 years later, at the beginning of 2024, after being used in the 2023 British black comedy psycho thriller film Saltburn, the song made a comeback, shooting to the top of the UK Dance chart and climbing halfway up the Billboard chart stateside.

Like other channels to which I subscribe on YouTube, the Nashville-based IMY2 trio takes well known hits of the past and gives them their own treatment and a refreshingly new sound without straying too far from the original. Many of their fans, myself included, have commented that we like some of their covers better than the original versions.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, good buddy Kirk. I invite you back on or about October 26 when I bring you Part 2 of my 2024 Shadyween Salivation. Until then, have a great month!

  8. Happy October Shady! Sorry I'm late as usual. i was being stalked by a doctor...wait, that was just work! I managed to get today off and will be prepping for the annual family Halloween gathering next weekend. I tried to see why your comments were sent to spam but no luck. Not sure why that's happening but I've noticed a real down turn in comments from other blog buddies and wonder if that's happening to them. I'm going to keep trying to figure it out. Anyway, a couple of things on this post that had a real collection of cool and weird and down right scary. I hate clowns! I didn't know Kevin Spacey could sing and I didn't know Nicole Kidman could either! But I liked both videos. I remember weird Gill from your posts in previous years! So funny! Things here at the Pines are good since we got some needed rain, the weather is getting more Fall like, and my inside decor is Halloween ready. Working on the outside today! My car woes are still there. It seems like now my car won't be done until November! Oh well, I hope all's good in your neck of the universe and you're enjoying some cool weather and pretty leaves. Thanks again for your comments and I sure hope I can figure out why blogger wants to torture us? Take care now!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Welcome to my Shadyween Salivation - featuring mouth-watering tune treats to suit everyone's palate and every musical taste.

Thanks for referencing the Eric Roberts TV movie series Stalked By My Doctor. It's a hoot - more smiles than scares.

Yessum, I notice you still didn't find my comment from a few weeks ago. That's disappointing. In that comment, I remember saluting Jack for his decades of service to the community as a healthcare provider and congratulating him on his upcoming retirement. I also praised the Good Samaritan woman who scooped-up runaway pooch Annabelle and got her safely back home to you. That was an alarming episode in my sweetie-pie's life. Your blog should have a section that divides comments into those that have been published and those that were sorted as spam or "awaiting moderation." If you locate that spam folder in your account settings, you should be able to find my comment and perhaps the comments of other friends. Good luck!

You hate clowns, but Art the Killer Clown from the Terrifier series wants to smooch you on the cheek as a token of his affection. Just don't make the mistake of turning your back on him. :)

Yessum, how about those great vocal performances by Kevin (House Of Cards) Spacey and Nicole (To Die For) Kidman? Gill Mann is a real Creature of habit. He specializes in covering famous croon tunes like Bobby Darin's "Beyond The Sea (Lies the Black Lagoon)." I'm glad he gives you a chuckle.

We got a little rain a few days ago, but are still mostly dry, with hardly any chance of precip in the forecast for the coming week. I needed to go out this morning and water everything. I can't wait to see your Halloween decorations, inside and outside. I still remember that picture you posted several years ago of your spooky kitty out on the deck. As I recall, he sadly passed away shortly thereafter. Sorry about your ongoing car woes. The same has happened to Mrs. Shady and me many times.

I hope you and your family enjoy a fine day together when you throw your annual Halloween bash at The Pines. Don't be surprised if the Yeti comes out of Creepy Woods and crashes the party dressed as Spider-Man.

Thank you again for coming and have a wonderful month, dear friend YaYa. I hope we can get back in touch when I return on October 26 with Part 2 of my Shadyweek Salivation!

  9. I happened to check my email during our two week vacation noticing your visit and request to stop by. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do so because cell coverage is spotty in Maine for us. Anywho, I thoroughly enjoyed this edition of retro song picks. Kevin Spacey is a fabulous actor. He does a great job singing, too. The Creature is has an incredible crooner voice. I always enjoy the picks you've shared by this artist in the past. The rocker girl band is electric!

Have an incredible October, my friend!

  10. I had no idea Kevin Spacey could sing and dance. What do you know? Sorry for the late reply. Computer broke down. But thanks for the nice comment on my last post. I had a lot of fun performing at Dragon Con. Have a Happy Halloween!

  11. Where do you get these photos? They're amazing. Especially the vintage ones. How are you preparing the house for the Halloween this year?

  12. Hi Shady, this is a great Halloween post. I loved Bobby Darin as a teen and I think The Creature captured his singing much better than Kevin Spacey. But neither of them was as good as Bobby. Sophie Ellis-Bextor has a great voice. Dead Man's Party was so funny, I loved the band. Not crazy about Jack Scott. I love Nicole Kidman's voice. The first time I heard her sing was in Moulin Rouge. She is just great. The guy who sang with her has a fantastic voice too. Very entertaining!
