"Glory, Glory (I Am Free)" - Dea Matrona
(Feb. 2022)

Kicking off the show, and following closely on the heels
of The Nolan Sisters, the Irish sister group you met a few
weeks ago, that was Dea Matrona, a Belfast-based duo,
sometimes a trio, formed in 2017, and named after
the divine mother goddess of Celtic mythology.

Hi, I'm Chris Griffin,
and I bring you ROCK!
Welcome to a sneak preview
of my S-P-M-M radio show
PSYCHOTIC
BREAK!
As you recall, I'm the crazy
mixed-up kid from Family Guy.
Today I'm back playing host
and DJ... preparing for my
full-time gig as a member
of The Shady Bunch.

Now let me introduce the talented singers, song-
writers and musicians of our featured act
Dea Matrona.

Mollie McGinn, on the left above & below, and Orlaith Forsythe, on the right
above & below, are besties who grew up busking on the streets of Belfast.
They caught on big time, started playing larger gigs and released
singles, an EP and an album. They sometimes appear as a trio
with Mollie's kid sister Mamie McGinn, center, on drums.

What I admire most about Dea Matrona is their versatility. They write,
perform and record their own songs and cover a variety of artists
and music styles. Most of their stuff has an old school vibe.
The ladies draw inspiration from 70s classic rock bands
like Cream, Led Zep, Joan Jett and Fleetwood Mac.

Today, I'm proud
to present some of
Dea Matrona's
greatest performances.
The Belfast bombshells
can't wait to rock the
block... so let's get
back to the tuneage.

Check out this next number.
It's been eons since I saw
or heard anything this rad!

There's no question
 about it, folks. This

butt! They're the
 real deal, and I say
they're going places.

As the talent scout
for Shady's Place,
I'm shouting it
from the rooftops:

Dea Matrona
ROCKS! RULES!
SLAYS! SHREDS!
KILLS! DESTROYS!

DARN! Seems like I'm just getting
started and boss man Shady Del Knight

  1. Hi Shady!

Happy Black Friday! I hope that you and Mrs. Shady enjoyed your Thanksgiving.

Dea Matrona sound amazing! You got me rocking this morning and I needed that groove since I'm still feeling sluggish from all the turkey. I'll have to ask my Irish cousins if they've listened to this group and if they haven't, share it with them.

Have a great Friday, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

You arrived just as I was taking the padlock off the gate, dear friend. Thanks for being the Early Bird!

I'm happy to have you here as Shady's Place talent scout Chris Griffin comes through big time with another exciting musical discovery - Dea Matrona. I'm delighted that you like the look and sound of these versatile and talented street buskers from Belfast. Yessum, I remember you telling me you'd ask your Irish cousins if they know about The Nolans, so please ask them about Dea Matrona, too, and let me know if they have anything to say about either group. I'm curious!

Happy Black Friday to you as well. We did indeed enjoy our Thanksgiving and I'll be over to read about yours momentarily. Thanks again for being the first to arrive and have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend JM!

  2. Dea Matrona have great voices. I hadn't heard of them before but wow, they are great. I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. My daughter, son in law and grandson came over for dinner yesterday. Falcor got all the pieces that my 9 year old grandson dropped so he wouldn't have to eat it. LOL

    1. Hi, Mary!

I'm finding your comment 3+ hours late again this week, dear friend, because it was trapped in the junk dungeon! Thanks a lot for coming over on your holiday weekend to meet and greet Dea Matrona!

I had a hunch you'd like these former Belfast street buskers. They cover a wide range of musical styles and perform all of them authentically and impressively. I agree that their harmonies are out of this world. I'm thrilled that you appreciate their talent.

Yessum, we had a nice Thanksgiving. Thanks for telling me a little about yours. I'm happy to know that my buddy Falcor was able to gobble up some scraps that fell from the table.

Thanks again for joining the fun with Chris and the ladies, dear friend Mary. I'll be over to see you tamale and again on Sunday. Have a great weekend!

  3. Good evening Shady! I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving day and enjoyed this Black Friday sale day. I did go shopping but not at a typical store...in a barn actually! Of course I'll blog later about it. I love Dea Matrona! These Irish lovelies can do it all. Hard rock, pop, and blues and I'm sure even more. So talented! The little sister reminds me of my daughter-in-law's cousin, Mandy, who lives with them now. I know I've blogged about her. There's just something about Mamie McGinn that reminds me of Mandy. I don't think Mandy can sing though! Ha! Anyway, I enjoyed this post! Have a nice weekend and enjoy some leftovers!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

I'm excited to have you over, dear friend. Thanks for coming early and on a holiday weekend!

Yessum, I had a nice Thanksgiving, thank you. Mrs. Shady made a turkey dinner with green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, stuffing and a pumpkin pie for dessert.

I know that you love to visit quaint shops, farmers markets, flea markets etc., and how you also support downtown businesses in Ashland. I admire you for that.

I am so pleased that you appreciate the second Irish girl group I have presented this year - Dea Martona. They prove themselves worthy of every type of material, every style. That's what comes from years of experience busking on the streets. They learn songs to please every taste.

Yessum, I remember Mandy. I'm glad drummer Mamie reminds you of her. Dea Matrona sometimes appears as a duo and at other times as a trio. I wish they'd just stay a trio because all three bring a lot to the act.

I am always happy to please you with my musical offerings. Thanks for letting me know how much you enjoyed Dea Matrona. Those gals have soul.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, dear friend YaYa. I'm sure you have plenty of yummy leftovers to plow through up there at The Pines. Please drop some turkey scraps on the floor (accidentally on purpose) for my sweetie pie Annabelle! :)

  4. Buskers? I bet the first time out someone threw a record contract into their hat.

As Peter Griffin said, they're certainly versatile. After the neofolksy "Glory, Glory (I Am Free)" I was hardly expecting the neometallic "Make You My Star". By the way, I think I detected a bit of Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name" in there.

The one that really jumps out at me is "Love Me Like a Man". Not so much the song itself, but Mollie McGinn's girly-girl blues belting. I don't know how it would be received in the Mississippi Delta, but since I don't live in the Mississippi Delta, it just blew me away.

And that's all I got. Honest.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for attending Dea Matrona's Thanksgiving weekend concert, good buddy! Since the audience is sparse due to the holiday, I see you had no problem finding a front row seat (and a good spot on the sidewalk, as the case may be) to watch the beautiful Belfast buskers entertain with music in a variety of styles.

Thanks for adding the Bon Jovi influence you detected on Dea Matrona's Joan Jett - Suzi Quatro inspired "Star" song. It's my Pick To Click. I love the raw, stripped-down garage punk arrangement with the girls' sassy harmonies floating atop a dense, sludgy wall-of-sound. "Star" might very well be nature's perfect rock song - rock the way nature intended.

Yes, Mollie sizzled on that Chris Smither - Bonnie Raitt country rock anthem. I get a strong sense that Mollie is the breakout star of the act, the one drawing the most attention, especially from male admirers around the world. I think she should tackle more material in the same vein such as "Black Velvet" and "Man! I Feel Like A Woman. I also hope she doesn't stop rocking with her band, though, because the showender is another killer, in my opinion.

I'm very happy that you are impressed by Dea Matrona and enjoyed the show. Shady's Place talent scout Chris Griffin never lets us down with his musical discoveries. Thanks again for reporting for duty during the holiday weekend, good buddy Kirk. Have a wonderful week ahead!

  5. Hello Tom,

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. We were suppose to go to Cracker Barrel with the kids today for our celebratory feast but our oldest daughter has pneumonia so we called it off for another time when she (and her family) could join us.

Dea Matrone is an exciting trio! I really enjoyed their two original (opening & closing) songs. I also loved their Carole King and CSN covers. I am so glad you introduced these young ladies to my ears today. I can't wait to boogie over to YouTube to listen to more.

Have a boogietastic week, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for coming by on your holiday weekend, dear friend! I'm delighted to welcome you to this free concert put on by my second big Irish girl group discovery of the year -- the Belfast busker babes known as Dea Matrona!

Oh my goodness, I'm very sorry to learn that your daughter has pneumonia! Is she LA's mommy? I surely hope she's going to be AOK. I hope you all get to carry out your original plan soon and meet at Cracker Barrel for a family holiday celebration.

I'm pleased that you think so highly of Dea Matrona. Everyone who has commented so far likes them and singles out different songs. I'm glad you mentioned their originals, because they obviously have great talent as songwriters, composers, arrangers and producers. They truly are a self-contained act and versatile as can be, as evidenced by the range of genres they cross in this set.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Cathy. I'll be over to CAAC tamale for your 4M and hope you have good news about your daughter to share at that time. Bless you, dear friend!

    2. Yes, DD#1 is LA's mommy. She's doing better but still this stuff is serious and there's no room for chance taking. She's being extra careful to keep LA away from her face to limit close exposure but you know it's really hard when you have small children. It seemed every time someone got sick here when the kids were little, it was no time before DH, me or both were sick, too. It just happens when you share a place with more than one person. I'm sure it'll be no time before we can get together just as long as no one else pops up sick. This is the cold/flu season.

Thanks for dropping by this morning to hit the dance floor. Have a boogietastic week, my friend!

    3. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for coming back over to give me an update on your daughter. Yessum, I worry that sweet LA might be exposed if they aren't careful. A child's instinct is to hug and cling to mommy, even climb all over her in many cases, and that wouldn't be good. I will be thinking about them throughout the week and hopefully get an encouraging report from you when I drop by CAAC on Wednesday.

Thanks again for your return visit, Cathy. I'll see you on Maine Day, at which time I will also be pubbing my next post. Take care, dear friend!

  6. Wow, Shady, these girls are great and what a range of songs. Seems like the ones they write themselves are a bit more of the rock and roll style but they do a really good job on the covers too. Crosby, Stills and Nash were never one of my top 10s but I even like this rendition of Helplessly Hoping. Sorry I'm a bit late to the party but, you know, life. I'm off to the studio now to put things back in some kind of order after my show yesterday. Hope you and the Mrs. had a terrific Thanksgiving. Happy Sunday to you dear friend.

    1. Hi, Janet!

Welcome to the Dea Matrona concert, dear friend! By the way, I left a comment on your latest post a while ago explaining that one of your recently published comments here at Shady's Place was removed by my blog gremlins and sent to spam. I just caught it this morning. I have no idea why such freaky things are happening. Anyhow, I got your comment republished, so we're all good. In my comment on your site today, I also wondered how you are feeling. If you were well enough to participate in the craft show yesterday, then I take it you are felling better. That makes me happy!

I'm delighted that you and other readers give a favorable rating to these singers, songwriters, musicians and former street buskers from Belfast. Irish acts Dea Matrona and The Nolan Sisters are among my most exciting musical discoveries of the 21st century. Thanks for singling out their cover of "Helplessly Hoping."

I'm so glad you are bouncing back to health, Janet, and I know my buddy Benny must be dancing a jig to have his mommy taking him for walks again. I trust you enjoyed the feast you ordered for turkey day. Mrs. S made us a dinner and baked two pumpkin pies for dessert. Everything's delicious. We're still plowing through the leftovers.

Thank you again for your visit and comment and have a healthy and happy week, dear friend Janet!

    1. Hi, Kelly!

I'm very happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for breaking away from your Thanksgiving celebration and checking out Belfast's Best - Dea Matrona! I wish I could take credit for finding this band, but it was talent scout Chris Griffin who brought them to my attention a couple of months ago. I binged on their YouTube channel and selected the performances I like best. This song lineup also shows-off the girls' versatility. I'm sure they built a diverse repertoire taking requests on the streets during their years as buskers. I'm so glad you like them!

Yessum, we had a nice Thanksgiving. Thank you! And I hope you and my buddy Pat did as well. I hope he is having his tummy stuffed full of turkey leftovers every single day. :) Thanks again for coming, dear friend Kelly, and have a wonderful week!
