"Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)" - Robert Palmer
(Aug./Sept. 1979, highest cht. pos. #1 Canada, #10 Cash Box,
#14 Hot 100, perf. on Australian TV show Countdown)

That was British bad boy Robert Palmer on the Australian music TV series
Countdown performing one of his definitive songs, "Bad Case of Loving
You (Doctor, Doctor)," a 1979 single that reached the top 15 on the
U.S. chart and went all the way to number one in Canada.

Hello...
I'm Doctor
Shaun Murphy.

I am a young autistic
surgeon with savant
syndrome on staff
at the prestigious
St. Bonaventure
Hospital in San Jose,
California, on the
TV medical drama
The Good Doctor.

Along with my distinguished (but inferior to me) colleagues
and my on-again, off-again BFF Lea, I welcome you to

The Good Doctors:
Music Is Medicine...

...a sneak preview presented without commercial interruption.

The songs we play
will make you smile,
dance and have fun...
three things that
are outside of my
wheelhouse. In fact,
I don't even have
wheelhouse. So,
go on and have
good time.
I'll watch.

I'm Lea Dilallo...

Shaun's on-again, off-again platonic friend, on-again,
off-again roommate and on-again, off-again love interest.

Our next featured song comes to us from Anne Reburn, a talented young Okie
who moved to L-A and became a star on YouTube writing and singing her
own songs and performing creative covers. On her recordings, Anne
sings all of the vocal parts in harmony, plays multiple musical
instruments and does her own production mixing.

Anne is here to sing another popular
Robert Palmer song, one that topped
the chart in 1986. The iconic video
that promoted the single is one of
the most memorable from the
golden years of MTV. Upon
examination by Shaun and
his team, the fella in the song
presented with the following
symptoms: body shakes, can't
sleep, can't eat, and heartbeat
in double time. I'm not a
doctor, but I know what's
wrong with him. Poor guy's
addicted to love. Here now
 is Anne Reburn doing the
Robert Palmer song in the
style of a hit cover by
Florence & The Machine!

I'm Dr. Claire Brown...

a surgical resident, co-worker and close friend of Shaun Murphy.
I have a reputation for showing empathy for patients and families
and for my emotional maturity, patience and understanding.

Now here is Cuts Monsieur,
a Japanese singer and musician
who loves The Beatles and is on
mission to cover all their songs.
Like Anne Reburn, the artist Lea
introduced, Cuts overdubs all
vocal and instrumental parts
in his home studio.

  1. Shady!

You got me grooving this morning! I love all of these songs, especially the Robert Palmer one. "Bad Case of Loving You" will now be in my head all day. Thanks, dear friend.

Mom used to love watching the Good Doctor. I'm not one for watching TV, but you now have me curious. I'm slowly starting to watch and I have to thank Netflix for that one. Usually I scrapbook and write with the TV on in the background, but I've been getting back into anime on Netflix and have put aside my projects to watch. It's good to relax.

This show is still on ABC, right? Have a great day, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thank you very much for racing over to claim the Early Bird title, dear friend!

I'm delighted that you love all of the songs played by The Good Doctors in this sneak preview of their new radio series coming soon to Shady's Place. Yessum, that catchy Robert Palmer song is an earworm. I have it stuck in my noggin too. It's been playing on repeat ever since I double-checked my post for typos first thing this morning. Yessum, based on the 2013 South Korean series of the same name, the Good Doctor is in its 6th season on ABC. I watch it on Hulu.

i think it's a great idea for you to scrapbook while listening to The Good Doctor, because it can be slow moving. To me, the series is more of a soap opera about romantic relationships than a medical drama. It therefore qualifies as a "guilty pleasure." The show can be a hoot, like it was the time Morgan flashed her boobs at a male patient (an actual incident that took place in the series).

Thanks again for coming early, dear friend JM. Enjoy your day. Please note that a hurricane is approaching Florida and is expected to hit us tomorrow morning with tropical storm force winds. There's a pretty good chance I will lose power and internet and not be able to visit your blog and/or respond to your follow-up comments on my blog. If I seem to "ghost" you on Thankful Thursday, please understand that I am enduring another outage.

      Take care!

    2. I think I'll check it out then and scrapbook as I watch. Could be interesting. I've been getting into anime and that has been interesting.

I hope you and Mrs. Shady are safe as Hurricane Nicole visits. Happy Thankful Thursday, dear friend.

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for coming back over, dear friend! If you start watching The Good Doctor from the beginning, you might be surprised to learn that two main cast members, Freddie Highmore (Shaun) and Antonia Thomas (Claire) are British and normally speak with distinctive British accents. You'd never know it.

It looks like we might be in the clear. Nicole swept across Central Florida this morning with the center of circulation passing just to our north and east. We had high winds with gusts and lost power for a brief time. A little later, we briefly lost internet. We are still experiencing gusts and rain, but the system has traveled over toward the west coast and I believe the worst is over. Hopefully this will mark the unofficial end of the long hurricane season.

Happy TT to you as well, dear friend JM. I'll be over to see you shortly. Enjoy your day and the rest of your week!

  2. I've always been a Michael Jackson fan and I'd totally forgotten about Heartbreak Hotel. I enjoyed that!

As usual, I'm lacking in any knowledge of The Good Doctor. So many things these days require streaming and that's not a viable option for us. I know folks in big cities find that unbelievable!

I hope you don't get too much rain from the coming storm. That seems to be the main threat from what I've seen.

    1. Hi, Kelly!

You finished a very competitive second place this week, dear friend. Thanks for joining the fun as I introduce another group of Shady's Place DJ wannabes - Shaun Murphy and The Good Doctors!

Yessum, "This Place Hotel," originally composed as "Heartbreak Hotel," is a seldom heard nugget by Michael and The Jacksons. Wiki explains the reason for the name change as follows: << The song's title was changed to "This Place Hotel" to avoid confusion with the 1956 Elvis Presley hit, "Heartbreak Hotel". Michael said he was unaware of the Presley song and the fact that the title was changed. >> Heck, I doubt any Jacksons fans would have gotten confused by the title "Heartbreak Hotel." Throughout music history there are examples of completely different songs with matching titles. I don't know why they didn't just go ahead and keep "Heartbreak Hotel" as the song's title, because I think it is more confusing as "This Place Hotel." Right?

I'm sorry you can't watch The Good Doctor. The medical series has its moments, but it's not in the same league as ER or Chicago Hope. It is mostly a soap opera about relationships, primarily autistic Shaun's struggle to fit in as a member of a team of hospital doctors and forge a successful relationship with his love interest Lea.

Thanks for the well wishes as Florida prepares to get hit by another hurricane. Rain bands are already moving across our area. This storm shouldn't be quite as bad as Ian, but we are expecting 50 mph sustained winds with gusts of 60 or greater. The height of the storm should be around 9 am tomorrow and that's when it is most likely that we will lose power. I hope it doesn't come to that. It has actually been a little too dry around here since Ian passed through a few weeks ago, so we can use the rain.

Thanks again for thinking about us and for your kind visit and comment, dear friend Kelly!

  3. Bonnie Tyler is definitely my favorite artist from this weeks songs. Some people can really do a good job on a cover of a song and I don't usually like covers because the original usually sounds better. The Good Doctor is a good show. I hope you have a good week.

    1. Hi, Mary! Thanks for coming by, dear friend! Hooray! Your comment went right through this time. I didn't need to go hunting for it in the spam folder.

Thanks for singling out Bonnie Tyler's biggie as your favorite in this set of songs. Knowing your love of rock, I'm a little surprised that the hit by rowdy Robert Palmer didn't grab you.

I'm happy to know you are familiar with the TV medical drama The Good Doctor and have obviously watched it. I can hardly believe it is now in its 6th season!

Thanks again for coming over on day one, dear friend Mary. Even if we experience a power outage tomorrow due to the hurricane, I hope to be back online by Saturday to enjoy your Song of the Week feature.
If I fail to show up, you'll know it's because I am still in the dark over here. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  4. Hi Shady, I just read your hurricane has been downgraded to a tropical storm, which is bad enough. I hope all goes well for everyone in Florida.

It was such fun to see Robert Palmer. I'll never forget the first time I saw him on MTV when he was singing, "Simply Irresistible." I thought, "This is a rock singer?" He looked great in a suit but completely different than most rock singers. I was amazed he would be accepted by teens etc. "Bad Case of Loving You," is a great song and his voice and style wonderfully original as is, "Addicted to Love," I liked the cover by Anne Reburn very much. She has a lot of talent.

"It's A Heartache," has always been a favorite of mine. Her gravelly voice and the sadness in the words always affects my heart. While I'm not crazy about the song, "Doctor Robert," it was on one of my favorite albums, "Revolver." Loved the video and he did a terrific job. As always, thanks for all the good songs.

    1. Hi, Belle!

I'm very happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming down to experience this speak preview of my new series The Good Doctors: Music Is Medicine.

I'm pleased that you remember Robert Palmer and watched his videos on MTV. His vids were popular on the MTV station where I worked in the 80s and 90s. They include "Some Like It Hot" and "Get It On," the hits produced with his band The Power Station. I suppose it could be said that Robert was a more polished rocker than most, dressed in those suits and singing in a style that was more like a controlled burn than a towering inferno. I liked him.

As years go by, we find young up-and-coming artists doing covers of covers instead of covers of originals That's what we have here in the performance of Anne Reburn who covered the cover of "Addicted To Love" released in 2010 by the English indie rock/baroque pop band Florence and the Machine. I'm also delighted that you enjoyed Binnie Tyler's big hit. Recently, I came upon that nicely restored performance video, and since the song's title and lyrics related to medical matters, I decided to plug it into this sneak peek Doctors post. I'm glad you acknowledge Japanese cover artist Cuts Monsieur for the job he did on "Doctor Robert."

Thanks for mentioning storm Nicole. The system is expected to pass over us around 9 this morning, three hours from now. Last I heard, our area can expect 50 mph sustained winds with gusts to 60 or greater. An hour ago, as I was making the morning coffee, the lights flickered off and immediately back on again, signaling that the storm means business. We could lose power at any time in the coming hours. We just now got a very big gust of wind. If you email me or follow-up here with another comment and find me unresponsive, you will know that I have no internet service.

Thank you again, very much, for your kind visit and excellent comments, dear friend Belle. Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend, and mark your calendar for next Monday, the 14th, when I launch another fun series here at Shady's Place!

  5. Tom,

It's been awhile since I've heard or thought about Robert Palmer. You picked two of his best hits from the 80s and excellent chooses to get the patient up on her feet. :) Bonnie Tyler's hit I remember. I forgot this song came out of the late 70s. If you want good music you gotta go wayback to the 70s and 80s to get it. There's not much current stuff out there that gives me a Heart Attack (Olivia Newton John). I'm very interested in the young cover artist in today's line up. After I leave here, I'm heading to YouTube to sample more of Anne Reburn's music. She has really interesting vibe and is such a talented musician. Thanks for dropping me a line of your latest post. I'm really off my mark. I meant to come by yesterday but got sidelined in the kitchen making cranberry pumpkin bread. Y'all stay safe and dry in the mess Nicole is bringing into your area,my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I'm glad you could make it over for this sneak preview of The Good Doctors, dear friend. Thanks for coming!

I'm happy to remind you of Robert Palmer, a talented rocker who released several major hits and died young at age 54 from a heart attack. Recently, I realized that I have been neglecting Robert and his music. I have only posted one of his songs in the last several years, and that was an animated video cover by Second Life Story. I agree with you that much of today's music lacks the heart, soul and spirit found in songs of the 1980s and earlier.

Thanks for mentioning ONJ's "Heart Attack," another song that would work well in this medical themed radio series.

In the last couple of years, I have posted a few Anne Reburn videos, and I have an entire post coming up that features more of her great covers. Stay tuned. Anne is an amazingly talented singer and musician who produces her own recordings and imaginative videos.

Yessum, I figured that you got distracted yesterday after we connected and forgot to come over, and that's why I sent you that email reminder. I wish I could taste your cranberry pumpkin bread. I'll have to ask Mrs. Shady if she can bake us a loaf or two.

I am pleased to report that storm Nicole picked up steam and arrived in our area a couple of hours ahead of schedule. I think the worst is over now, because the center of circulation is to our west and moving toward the coast. In a couple more hours, the storm will emerge out over the Gulf and proceed northward toward another landfall. We lost power only briefly a couple hours ago and the winds are now diminishing. The heavy rain were are receiving is actually welcome because it turned too dry in the weeks since Ian passed through.

Thanks again for coming by and have a terrific Thursday, dear friend Cathy!

  6. Good evening Shady! I hope you're alright with that nasty hurricane/tropical storm/pain in the keester storm! I enjoyed the songs here and what talent Anne Reburn has! I enjoyed her cover version but I always loved Robert Palmer (so sad when he passed away) and his is still my fav but she did a good job. That Beatles song is one I don't remember...hmmm...thought I was a good Beatles fan! I have watched the Good Doctor and it's a good show. My issue with it was I actually worked with an autistic surgeon and frankly it was hell. I was very happy when he moved on but perhaps he was the inspiration for this show? Our surgeon was Dr. Martin..close to Dr. Murphy don't you think? The big difference is Shaun is a really good doctor...our was not! However, the songs here were topnotch and the face of Morgan Reznick is very familiar. I believe I may have seen her on a Hallmark movie. However, she didn't flash her boobies so I'm not totally sure! Have a good weekend Shady and I do really hope you're family is safe from the storm!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for popping in for a sneak peek at The Good Doctors, a new medical-themed SPMM radio series coming soon to Shady's Place.

Yessum, we are AOK. Thanks for asking. I hope your Florida family members are, too. The last thing they needed on top of the misery brought by Ian was a late-season hurricane cutting straight across the peninsula from the opposite direction. The dang eye of the storm came uncomfortably close to my house. My big brother called me today to ask if I'm alright, and he is fine, too. I hope this was the last of the tropical threats we will face this season.

I'm very happy that you liked these doctor and symptom songs, and that you and other friends reacted favorably to Anne Reburn. She's got a velvet voice and talent to spare. Imagine. In addition to being a fine vocalist, she writes many of her own songs, plays a variety of musical instruments and mixes, edits and produces all of her videos in her LA-based home studio. Meanwhile, Shady is still playing with his bellybutton and learning how to wave bye-bye.

"Doctor Robert" is a song penned by Beatle John and released on the band's 1966 album Revolver. John sings lead on the song and Paul does the high harmony. Since John is my favorite Beatle, "Doctor Robert" is one of my favorite Beatles songs.

If you watch The Good Doctor often enough, you will realize that Shaun Murphy actually does make life hell for his co-workers much of the time. My issue with it, and Mrs. Shady's, is that it quickly went from a promising medical series to mostly a soap opera about romantic and familial relationships. It's basically a chick flick on TV. It is a coincidence that the doctor you worked with had the same condition and a similar name. I read that this ABC series, The Good Doctor, is based on a 2013 South Korean series of the same name.

Fiona Gubelmann plays Morgan Reznick. In the early 2010s, Fiona was in the dystopian film Downstream and a regular cast member of the Australian comedy TV series Wilfred. I recently saw her in the role of a stripper (yessum, she flashed her boobies big time) in Employee of the Month (2004), a film I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend.

Thanks again for thinking about us down here. We had a brief power outage and a short internet outage, but not property damage, just the usual lawn flooding which we've been putting up with for more than 25 years. I am so happy knowing that my sweetie pie Annabelle is feeling better.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend YaYa. Have a super Friday and a safe and happy weekend!

  7. Happy Friday my friend. I have always been a fan of Robert Palmer. So sad that he died young. My husband says he read somewhere that RP smoked a lot of cigarettes on purpose to keep his raspy voice. Doesn't sound like anything a doctor would suggest.

I am not familiar with The Good Doctor and had to check it out because if the hospital in in San Jose, California that's right down the street! I checked out the trailer and it looked interesting but in reading one of your comments above, if it has turned into a soap opera, I'm not going to rush to watch it. We did, however, just watch a Netflix movie called "The Good Nurse" and that was really good, based on a true story. It started Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain.

Glad to hear that you are safe from the hurricane. No recent earthquakes here either although it is very cold. Hope you and the Mrs. have a terrific weekend.

    1. Hi, Janet!

Welcome welcome welcome, dear friend! I'm happy that you came over to sample the sights and sounds as another batch of SPMM radio DJ wannabes, The Good Doctors, introduce themselves and play medical themed tuneage.

I never heard that story about Robert Palmer smoking heavily on purpose to keep his voice raspy. There has to be a better way. I have learned the surprising truth that living a long life isn't a top priority for a lot of people. They would rather live on their own terms, by their own rules, and die young. Anyhow, I'm glad you liked Robert's career output.

Yessum, the TV series The Good Doctor is set in your neck of the woods. Mrs. Shady and I agree that far too much time is spent on pairs of characters sitting around teary eyed discussing their emotions in hushed voices, almost a whisper, leading me to the conclusion that the series is intended mainly as a soap opera to be followed by women. The pace of the series is slow and the dialogue is somewhat "dumbed down" so that the average viewer will understand what's going on. We no likey! We strongly prefer a series like ER which is fast-paced, has the characters dealing with multiple emergency medical procedures in every episode, and featuring crackling dialogue loaded with esoteric medical jargon, making that series much more realistic, the gold standard of the genre.

Hey, I just watched The Good Nurse a few nights ago! Wow, Eddie Redmayne was absolutely convincing and chilling as the nurse who decided to play God by killing random patients. And it's based on a true story!

Yessum, we dodged another bullet with storm Nicole. No damage to report, and our power and internet service were interrupted only for a brief period this time. Now we are hoping we can turn our attention away from the pesky tropics and focus on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanks again for your thoughts and well wishes. I'm happy to know that you haven't experienced any recent earth tremors in your vicinity.

Thanks again for dropping in. Please smooch my buddy Benny and have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Janet!

  8. Robert Palmer is a British bad boy? I dread to speculate what that makes Johnny Rotten.

Well, it's--let me scroll up and make sure I got the name right--Anne Reburn's cover of "Addicted to Love" that won me over this time. It actually forced me to look up the lyrics to see why her interpretation seems so different. It's not just the arrangement but Anne's phrasing and, this being a video, her facial expressions. Robert Palmer sings--and this is further emphasized by his own video--as if he has no real emotional connection to the person he's addressing. Yes, he wants to "make you mine", but is it because he loves her back, or is she just another notch in the belt? Palmer nonchalant manner makes me think it's the latter. Kind of arrogant of him really, though with his good looks, he could probably afford to be arrogant. Anne Reburn's version, though, is anything but arrogant, and certainly not nonchalant. She sings kind of hesitantly, as if trying to break it gently to this other person that, yes, he (or she) is in love. And when she finally does get to "make you mine", she allows a little smile to poke through. The song seems to be as much about her own self being in love as it is the other person's. At least that's my take on it.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Welcome aboard, good buddy! I'm glad you didn't miss this sneak preview of The Good Doctors, another new series coming soon to Shady's Place. (Yep - it's official. I have given The Good Doctors the green light and ordered production of the first five episodes. I had been undecided, but Morgan sealed the deal last night!)

Robert Palmer as a "bad boy" in the sense that he specialized in singing songs about "man's temptation," being tempted by the pleasures of the flesh and yielding to them. SIN SIN SIN! BAD BAD BAD!

Wow, I am thrilled that artist Anne Reburn is such a hit this time around. I posted a few other songs by Anne in recent years and they did not receive this much positive attention. If you like Anne's style, I have good news. "Transistor Sisters" Nomi Marks from Sense8 and Nia Nal from Supergirl, hosts of the new SPMM series Transitive Verve, will have an entire post devoted to Anne's cool covers. It's coming soon to Shady's Place, so stick around.

Keep in mind, good buddy, that Anne's rendition of "Addicted" is not based on the Robert Palmer original. It is a "cover of a cover," something we are seeing more and more often as the years go by. In this case, Anne is covering the quiet, sad, emotive version of the song recorded and released in 2010 by the English indie rock band Florence And The Machine featuring lead vocalist Florence Welch. Listen and I think you'll agree that Anne's cover is faithful to the version by Florence And The Machine:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1sL5FlOMeI

More than just a singer, Anne Reburn s a gifted song interpreter. She has a knack of borrowing songs from other artists and making them her own - new classics that rival or surpass the originals. In addition, Anne writes many of her own songs. Most of her videos feature her group of "clones" - 4 or 5 Annes within the frame serving as backing singers on the recordings.

Thanks again for your kind visit and comment, good buddy Kirk. Stay tuned now as I introduce yet another new series and another new member of The Shady Bunch in my new post starting dark and early tomorrow morning. Have a super week!
