"Heaven's On Fire" - Kiss

Kicking off the show, that was the greatest and loudest band in the land, Kiss,
appearing on Swedish TV and performing a song that brushed the top 10 on
the U.S. Rock chart at the end of 1984, the fan favorite "Heaven's On Fire."

In 1973, rock singer/songwriter and guitarist Joe Walsh, former member of
the James Gang and future member of the Eagles, wrote and recorded with
his band Barnstorm a song that became a top 20 hit and has stood the test
of time as a gem of the genre. In 1997, Mark Slaughter and his Las Vegas
based glam metal band Slaughter released a cool cover of the song on

Earlier in the show, you heard Australian singing star Kat Jade do a cover of the
Journey hit "Separate Ways." To play us off, here's the Journey original plus a drum
cover by South Korean rock and heavy metal drum sensation Ami Kim. Now this
is Nancy Wheeler reminding you to keep your game face on and don't be afraid
to stand up and fight for what's right. So long and see you next time!
I have enjoyed Stranger Things so far. Looking forward to what comes next.
ReplyDeleteWell you were right. I did enjoy this post and the songs. I've always liked Kiss and Heaven's On Fire is one of my favorite songs by them. They are so over the top it always makes me smile to watch them perform.
I hadn't heard that Journey cover before but it's not bad. Of course I like the original best though.
It's been so long since I heard Hold On To 18. The hair from the 80's was so fun. That's why they call them the 80's hair bands. lol
And that Matthew Wilder song was so popular back then. I heard it all over the place.
Have a good week.
Hi, Mary!
DeleteDouble great news, dear friend. Your comment published w/o any problem, and you are this week's Early Bird! Thanks for coming to Nancy Wheeler's second monster mash bash!
How about that rare clip of Kiss appearing on a Swedish TV show and debuting their latest hit "Heaven's On Fire?" Apparently, the YouTube uploader who synced remastered studio audio with the original footage mistakenly captioned the clip "Scottish teevee." No so. Yessum, Kiss went over the top, and I loved them, too. I met them in early January 1986 when they came to the Tampa Bay area's USF Sundome to do a show with Blackie Lawless and W.A.S.P. as the opening act. My cam crew went backstage into the Kiss dressing room and watched Paul, Gene and the others applying their make-up. (It was their "unmasked" make-up, not the classic look they started out with.) Next, we interviewed drummer Eric Carr whom you see in that video. Sadly, little Eric had heart problems and died around seven years later in 1991. There were groupies galore hanging around backstage that day we met Kiss and interviewed Carr!
I'm pleased that you give credit to Aussie zinger Kat Jade and her fiancé (now hubby, I believe), for their cover of "Separate Ways" recorded in the musical couple's home studio. WOW, I'm excited that you remember "Hold On To 18" by Black 'N Blue. I was thrilled to find that nicely restored video of theirs.
Glad you also recall "Break My Stride," a biggie on the chart, on the radio and on TV from Christmas '83 to V-Day 1984.
Thanks again for coming right over to take the Early Bird spot, dear friend Mary. I'll see you tamale at Dark Thoughts!
I still love W.A.S.P. Those old 80's songs still hot with me.
DeleteHi, Mary!
DeleteI'm glad Nancy's show and artist/song lineup appeal to you, dear friend. Stick around for more horror and heavier sounds coming up during my long Halloween Rocktoberfest which always starts this month - in September!
Backstage that day, Saturday, January 4, 1986, as I recall, I saw Blackie Lawless chatting it up with a couple of groupies as my cam crew passed by on our way to the Kiss dressing room. On another occasion, we interviewed and filmed Poison doing their show at a venue in St. Pete. It was more of the same - plenty of groupies hanging around, and I witnessed some wild behavior. We also interviewed Ratt, Cinderella, Dokken, Warrant, Savatage and other great bands of the period. Can you tell I enjoyed that phase of my TV career? :)
Thanks again for coming by. I'm so glad your comments are going right through lately. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Mary, and please give my good buddy Falcor a biscuit from Shady!
I thought you were going to stump me across the board this time, Shady. It wasn't until I got to the Matthew Wilder song that I recognized anything! I like Duran Duran, but if I've heard that particular song, I don't remember it.
ReplyDeleteHi, Kelly & Pat!
DeleteThanks for rushing the gate to arrive second again this time, dear friend!
I'm surprised to learn that you didn't know most of the songs on Nancy Wheeler's vol. 2 playlist. "Heaven's On Fire" is a Kiss Klassic, and "Union Of The Snake" was one of Duran Duran's biggest hits. In 1983, Journey's "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" spent 4 weeks at #1 on the Rock Chart and was used in season 4 of Stranger Things.
For me, the biggest treat was finding the cover of "Rocky Mountain Way" by Slaughter. I never heard it before and it rocks! I like it as much or more than the Joe Walsh original.
next...
That was me. I filled it out, but it must have switched me back to anonymous! -Kelly
ReplyDeleteHi again, Kelly!
DeleteI'm so sorry you and I are having difficulty commenting on each other's blogs. I hope we don't lose touch.
The good news is that you left two comments, allowing me to write two replies and thereby boost my miserably low comment total. :)
Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Kelly, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Hi there, Shady. Reading about the show, Stranger Things, made me want to try it. Maybe. It depends. Lol I'm squeemish.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard a Kiss song before and it wasn't too bad, just not my taste. My sister Liz had their posters up in her room, they were her favorite band for years.
I loved the song, Separate Ways, by both Kat Jade and the band Journey. I did like the original better, but Kat has an amazing voice. Loved the drummer, Ami Kim and the way she twirled those sticks. She's great.
Break My Stride was very good as was Union of the Snake. I've never heard Duran Duran, which is ridiculous but true. I can see why Princess Diana liked them so much. Not crazy about the other songs as they are too heavy metal for me, if that is what they were. But everyone has different tastes. Thanks for all the fun. I am finally feeling better today after having two molars extracted. One week of feeling awful! Lol. God bless.
Hi, Belle!
DeleteI'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for being here to experience Part 2 of No More Mr. Nice Girl starring Nancy Wheeler of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things.
If you haven't watched Stranger Things, I recommend it. It has Steven Spielberg references and touches throughout. It is the kind of fantasy adventure intended for older children, teenage and adult audiences. The show has the look and feel of a big budget motion picture like E.T. There are scary special effects, but very little if any gore like you would see in many other movies and TV shows of the genre. The latest season of Stranger Things in particular was absolutely marvelous, resembling a blockbuster movie more than a TV series. So, if you do decide to watch Stranger Things, remember that the show and its characters will continue to grow on you and that it keeps getting better and better, unlike some shows that run out of ideas and overstay their welcome in later seasons.
I'm surprised you came this far without ever having heard a Kiss song. Are you sure that's true, dear friend? I think you must have seen and heard Kiss before because I have posted several of their songs and videos on my blogs over the years. Perhaps you simply don't remember them because their style of music isn't your taste. Kiss is one of my favorite bands. You can read my reply to Mary (above) to learn how I met them at the start of 1986 and interviewed their drummer for the MTV style station where I worked at the time. I was pleased to find this restored video clip of the guys performing on Swedish TV in 1984 and unveiling their latest hit single.
I'm pleased that you liked the full cover and also the showender drum cover of the big Journey hit "Separate Ways" by Kat Jade and Ami Kim respectively. In recent years, I have posted vids by both of these YouTube stars, and I am proud to bring you their fine performances in this edition of Nancy's show.
I'm also thrilled that you enjoyed the musical offerings of Matthew Wilder and Duran Duran. Here again, I can't believe you never heard Duran Duran because they were one of the leading acts of the new wave 80s, and because I have posted their songs several times over the years.
Black 'N Blue is a 1980s melodic hard rock hair band with a sound and style similar to Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Ratt and other rock hair bands of the period. Bands like Kiss and Black "N Blue are considered safe as mother's milk compared to the extreme metal acts that have emerged since the 80s.
I read your email last night for the first time, but it was late and I was too tired to do it justice. I will reply soon, I promise. I'm sorry you needed that trip to the dentist to have molars extracted. I'm sure it was an unpleasant experience. I'm happy to know you are feeling better and putting the ordeal behind you.
Thank you again, very much, for joining the fun, dear friend Belle. Take care, have a great week and stay tuned for some old old oldies coming up in my next post on Thursday. God bless!
Hi Shady! Well, I'm pretty old now and my memory is bad, which is probably why I don't remember hearing Kiss or Duran Duran. I'm so happy for you that you got to meet the guys from Kiss. Pretty thrilling! During the 1980s I was raising my daughters and I didn't listen to rock music, that's why I hardly know any songs from that era. Our daughters liked Cher, Sean Cassidy, Michael Jackson and The Bee Gees and others. I mostly listened to John Denver, Barry Manilow, Classical music and Christian songs. I bought all of Rod Stewart's CDs where he sang songs from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. He did such a great job. Dan liked the oldies and still does. He bought tons of CDs with songs from the 60s and 70s. We even listened to Frank Sinatra on our vacations on Sirius Radio. We loved that station. I'll let you know if we start to watch Stranger Things. We are in the middle of a series called, The Orville, which is a parody of Star Trek. It's both funny and serious. Thanks Shady!
DeleteHi, Belle!
DeleteThanks for returning to chat with me at Shady's clubhouse, wonderful friend!
Over the years, several friends have reported that they missed a decade or two of musical trends because they were busy raising children. That's understandable. Rock and new wave were the happening sounds of the 80s, and now I know why you aren't very familiar with Kiss, Duran Duran and other major acts of those genres. Knowing your taste, I doubt that you would have paid attention to the popular rock and metal bands even if you hadn't been raising a family. As you mentioned, you prefer mellow, easy listening pop sounds, classical music and Christian songs. I'm afraid future volumes of Nancy's show won't have very much to offer in those categories, but the shows of Brian Griffin, Meg Griffin, Mona Wu, Natalie Teeger and Kara Danvers will, and they should be more to your liking. Moreover, Beth Boland's show will have a lot of Rod Stewart for you. I also know that you love The Beatles, and the shows of Lucy Carrigan and Ellie Appleton will be loaded with Beatles originals plus excellent covers of their songs, so stay tuned.
All three of us are glued to The Orville. I think it and another "O" series, Ozark, are the two best shows on television. I'm glad you are watching The Orville. Scott Grimes, the red-headed actor who for years played Dr. Archie Morris on ER and now plays Gordon Malloy on The Orville, is a fine actor who does comedy and drama equally well.
Thanks again for returning to follow-up, dear friend Belle. Have a safe and happy week ahead!
Happy Sunday Shady and also I hope you're having a nice last holiday of the summer..Labor Day. I actually had a baby on Labor Day and today is #2 son's 45th birthday and he's celebrating out in Oregon having fun! (I also had to leave the original Star Wars movie to have that kiddo! ) So my 80's were filled with raising kids but I didn't live in a bubble so I did know the some of the songs and the original artists. I've always liked KISS and Kat Jade did a good cover of Journey's song. I didn't know Black and Blue but who can deny the "I don't care, it's 80's big hair!" Gotta love the big shoulders and bigger hair but every decade has it's look and it's music. I'm just glad to have been there, done that back in the day even if I don't know or remember all the bands. Thanks for the trip to the 80's today Shady! Enjoy the holiday tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteI'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over on your holiday weekend to sample the sounds of the 80s with Nancy Wheeler, the spunky, beast battling beauty from Stranger Things.
I'm delighted that you got so much enjoyment out of Nancy's second radio show. I am especially pleased that you liked the humor-laced video created by Kat Jade and her sweetie as they covered "Separate Ways" down under in their Australian home recording studio.
I'm also glad you weren't scared off by the long-haired rockers of Kiss and Black 'N Blue. The sounds laid down by the melodic pop-metal hair bands of the 80s seem like Herman's Hermits compared to the fierce, demonic, death-growling extreme thrash-metal bands that emerged in the decades that followed. Speaking of the 1980s, I highly recommend the sci-fi fantasy adventure series Stranger Things which is set in America's heartland (Indiana) in the 80s.
I must say, for someone who was busy raising kiddos in the 80s, you have a good memory and an appreciation of the artists and music of the decade. That's really cool, YaYa!
Happy birthday to your son way out in Oregon, Portland! Shucks, with a family your size, just about every day on the calendar is a special occasion. Thanks for sharing that the stork decided to bring your son to the theater as you were watching Chewy and the gang in the original Star Wars film. By the way, I hope you and Jack had a wonderful anniversary as well.
Thanks again for stopping in and have a safe and restful Labor Day, dear friend YaYa!
"Things got ugly when I started
ReplyDeleteto ghost my bf"
I had to look up ghost. I mean, I know what the word TRADITIONALLY means, but I've read or heard it in that context before. Learn something new every day.
Nice to hear some songs I'd so forgotten about I didn't even recognize the names. But I recognized Matthew Wilder's "Break My Stride" and Duran Duran's "Union of the Snake" the moment I clicked on the videos.
Liked Kat Jade's cover of "Separate Ways", proof that the song can survive the absence of Steve Perry's pipes. As for Slaughter, I eagerly await their version of "Life's Been Good.
I see you added The Amazing Criswell to the sidebar. Will he soon be joined by Vampira, Tor Johnson, and Bela Lugosi? (Every so often I'm told I should review more movies on my blog, but the fact that I actually LIKE Plan 9 from Outer Space and think that all Ed Wood really needed was a bigger budget probably exempts me from being taken seriously as a film critic.)
That's all I got.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteSimon says stay up late and comment on Shady's post, and you kindly followed his instruction. (See what I did there?) Thanks for burning the midnight oil so that you could pay a visit, good buddy! Seems like you found a few things to like about Nancy Wheeler's second show on SPMM. With Nancy's playlist cutting through the 1980s, I figured there'd be a few tunes from your youth that you remember and like.
I was thrilled to find that nicely restored video of Duran Duran performing "Union Of The Snake" on the West German music TV series Peter's Pop Show, and that other rare clip of Kiss appearing on Swedish TV singing their new single "Heaven's On Fire." It was one of the songs the band played shortly after my camera crew gained access to them backstage prior to their show with W.A.S.P. circa January 4, 1986, at Tampa's USF Sundome. What an exciting week that was! We had just interviewed The Thompson Twins at another venue the night before. There were groupies galore clogging the creepy corridors of the Sundome as I and my film crew made our way through the labyrinth and into the Kiss dressing room where I stood inches away from Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and watched them put on their faces for the stage performance. "I'm not worthy!"
I'm glad you appreciate the fine job Kat Jade did on "Separate Ways." Since making a splash on The Voice Australia, Kat has continued to build a fan base through her performances with "The World's Greatest Cover Band" - The Hindley Street Country Club.
Thanks for singling out Slaughter, an act that's been overlooked in the commenting so far. Lead zinger and guitarist Mark Slaughter and his glam metal/hard rock band from Lost Wages were in peak form as they laid down that outstanding cover of the Joe Walsh classic "Rocky Mountain Way," a song released on their 1997 psychedelic rock album Revolution. I like Slaughter's version every bit as much as the original.
You don't miss much, good buddy. It's cool that you spotted The Amazing Criswell in my sidebar. If you scroll up and down the page, you'll notice that I recently added many new members of The Shady Bunch deejay team that will soon be hosting shows. (Is that Eric Roberts over there? Sure is!!!) Tor Johnson scared the heck out of me as a child in 1956 when my big brother took me to the theater to see the horror movie The Black Sleep (aka Dr. Cadman's Secret). Not since Tod Browning's Freaks (1932) has there been such a disturbing assortment of characters as the subjects of the mad doctor's vile experiments who are locked in a dungeon. I won't be a spoiler. Yes, Criswell will indeed join the Shady Bunch as host of a series called (naturally) Criswell Predicts. Stay tuned!
Thanks again for joining the fun and composing such a great comment, good buddy Kirk. Happy L-Day to you. Simon says have an excellent week!
"Bon... Simon Le Bon." (quote at 3:45 mark of "A View To A Kill")

I have been in bad pain the last 3 days. It sucks and, I don't know why I write this to you, but I do because it makes me feel better somehow:) I can, at least type today. Harley is by my feet, sleeping away but he says "woof" to you:)
ReplyDeleteI don't know that KISS song but I never listened to them like a disciple. I just remember how all the girls were waiting to see them without their makeup and then....they did. Thump! Hahahaa.
That young girl has an amazing voice! She sang the song well and did a great job.
I had no clue what the next song was until I played it and remember it fondly. The Duran Duran song is a song I don't remember as well. I believe I have heard it before but it's a bit fuzzy. maybe I had too many Fuzzy Navels back in the day.
I actually heard the next song although it's not my fav but I do like the last song quite a bit. A great way to end this post hosted by this gal that i never watched before. I know it is a big hit so, one day, I might see it:) I hope you are well and enjoying the long weekend.
Hi, Birgit!
DeleteI'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming down to listen and learn as Nancy Wheeler does her second stint as a Shady Bunch DJ.
I'm very sorry to learn that your pain has been especially bad the last few days. I am honored that it feels right to you to share this and other behind the scenes tidbits. As I have told you, I am no stranger to chronic pain, and therefore I have some idea what you're dealing with. It makes me sad, because you are a dear friend whom I admire. I take my hat off to you because, in sickness and in health, you always maintain a sense of humor. So, if it makes you feel better to share and vent to me, then please do. You also have my email address if you'd prefer to contact me there.
Yessum, the argument could be made that Kiss should have kept their original makeup on instead of going "unmasked" in 1983. I think they sensed that some fans were outgrowing them and the comic book characters they personified. It was a bold move to wipe off the makeup, but it paid off with renewed fan interest, greater credibility as a band and a generation of new fans.
I'm delighted that you give a favorable nod to Aussie zinger Kat Jade. She is my favorite of the HSCC (Hindley Street Country Club) frontwomen. I admire Kat's soulful singing style. Yessum, "Break My Stride" is one of the peppiest, catchiest hit songs to come out of the new wave 80s. I'm glad you recognized it as it started playing.
All I can say about that Duran Duran song is that it was a big hit in my neck of the woods and a major North American hit for the English band. In fact, "Union of The Snake" reached #2 on the Canadian chart, surpassing the record's performance on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
I'm happy that you remember the original version of "Rocky Mountain Way" and know and like 'Separate Ways," the song that appears twice in this edition of Nancy's show.
Watching Stranger Things is like viewing a very long Steven Spielberg film. I think you'd like it, and I urge you to give it a try.
WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! to my good buddy Harley. Thanks again for being here on one of those days when you are feeling poorly. I hope that turns around soon and you start feeling better so that you can get back to enjoying life to the fullest. Take care and have a good week if not a great one, dear friend BB!
Hey Tom,
ReplyDeleteI have time for one last visit with you before I go off grid. The 80s rocked musically and you picked some gems. There are a few I didn't know, though. It was weird seeing Kiss without makeup on in your opening video. Stranger Things is a great series. We don't have Netflix anymore. The last season we watched is three, I think. Do they have others? It seems I saw something on an internet search that led me to think a new one was in the works. Thanks for sharing some fabulous tunes. Until next time, be well and have a boogietastic September, dear friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteIt's so nice of you to make time for a visit during your busy week of preps. Thanks, dear friend!
I'm pleased that you liked Nancy Wheeler's song set for volume 2 of her exclusive SPMM radio series No More Mr. Nice Girl. Yessum, Kiss actually bounced back in popularity during their "unmasked" period. The band removed the cartoonish makeup in 1983 and kept performing without it for more than a decade.
I'm excited that you have watched and liked Stranger Things. I hope you will be able to catch season 4, because it is tremendous - the best of all. There is also a season 5 scheduled to air sometime in 2024.
Thank you again for checking out Nancy's 80s tuneage. I wish you a wonderful, safe and happy month and will hopefully see you at CAAC and here at SPMM a few weeks from now. Take care, dear friend Cathy!
Well, this was fun...as usual. Loved the 80s tunes and the progression from good girl to break bad and Stranger Things. Now, this is a show I've tried to see a couple of times, and I think I'm missing something. Everyone seems to love it, but I can't get into it. Maybe some Cliff Notes would help.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, happy end of summer (this preview of hell has been too real this time around) and may winter bring us Santa Claus and lots of rain. Actually, I'll just take the rain if I have to choose.
Hi, Cheryl-Lee!
DeleteIt's great to see you, dear friend! Thanks for setting your radio dial to SPMM and tuning in Nancy Wheeler's second platter party!
I'm glad that you enjoyed the 80s tuneage Nancy played and at least gave her TV series Stranger Things a try. I think if you stick with the show a while longer, the characters will grow on you. Season 4 was absolutely the best so far, in my opinion.
We have been getting plenty of rain here in Florida. In fact, a loud boom of thunder just now sounded outside my window. Just about every afternoon or evening we get a storm, some stronger than others. A recent storm dumped several inches on us and our property was flooded worse than at any time since the hurricanes of the mid 2000s. Yessum, I sincerely hope the drought will soon ease for you folks out West. I'm thinking about you.
Thanks again for paying a visit to Shady's Place, dear friend Cheryl-Lee. Take care and enjoy the rest of your week and month!
