Howl Are Fangs With You, Wolfman?

AHHHOOOOO!!!

Mercy mercy me! This here's
your old buddy Wolfman Jack,
baby, "sittin' in the balcony"
and sittin' in for your regular
host Shady Del Knight at the
greatest little station in the
nation, S-P-M-M Retrosonic
Radio. I'm your doctor of
love, you understand. I've
got the cure you're looking
for-- the best oldies you
ever heard and the best
oldies you never heard!

While the moon is full and stars do shine
Cuddle and dance to these tunes of mine.

Grab that special someone, start squeezin'
and let the Wolfman's music do the pleasin'.

Now, you pay close
attention to these songs,
baby, or the Wolfman's
gonna GETCHA!

Oh my my, baby, you're gonna rock
around the clock when you hear the
platters the Wolfman's gonna play.
To start off my howlin' hootenanny,
I've got a nostalgic surf-rock sound
by the revival lineup of The Human
Beinz, a 60s band from Youngstown,
Ohio. In 2018 the H-Bs released this
groovy cover of a song first waxed
in 1965 by The Tradewinds. Here
now are The Human Beinz with
their so-called "Malibu Version"
of "New York's A Lonely Town!"

"New York's A Lonely Town (Malibu Version)"
- The Human Beinz (released in 2018)

You just heard a modern remake of a surf-
rock classic, a Beach Boys sound-alike
song by The Human Beinz, "New York's
A Lonely Town (Malibu Version)." Now
here's a Motown girl group that had a
string of soulful R&B hits in the 60s.
They're The Marvelettes, and these
ladies were hot at Christmas 1964
and in early '65 thanks to a song
that gives sound dating advice.
Don't sell yourself short, little girl.
There's "Too Many Fish In The Sea!"

"Too Many Fish in the Sea" - The Marvelettes
(Dec. 1965/Jan. 1965, highest chart pos.
#15 R&B/#21 Cash Box/#25 Hot 100)

Yes, gracious, everybody's talking about
the Wolfman's "pompatous of love."

You just listened to the marvelous Marvelettes of Motown reminding us
that there are too many fish in the sea. The Marvelettes are the gals who
topped the chart in 1961 with "Please, Mr. Postman." Well I got another
ditty from '61 about the mailman and his daily delivery, this one by
The Videls, a Providence, Rhode Island, quintet featuring the
vocals of Pete Anders and Vinnie Pincia. Here now are
The Videls and-- "A Letter From Ann."

"A Letter From Ann" - The Videls
(Sept. 1961, uncharted)

Awww, you thought your baby Ann was diggin' you...
but she was diggin' me... the cat on the radio.
Hee-hee-hee-hee-hee!

Yes, baby, those were The Videls with the vintage doo-wop sound
of "A Letter From Ann." That record didn't make the chart, but it
went straight to the old Wolfman's heart. I'm givin' it my ZEAL
of approval. In 1960, The Videls did reach the chart with
another sad song that goes, "I don't have a girl to call
my own, and I don't have a lover whose mine alone."
Here they are again, the fabulous Videls, with
the teenage lament-- "Mister Lonely."

"Mister Lonely" - The Videls
(June 1960, highest chart pos. #66 Cash Box/#73 Hot 100)

Oh baby... it's all according to how your
boogaloo situation stands, you understand?

That was "Mister Lonely," completing my
double play, two Videls sobbin' songs in a
row about lost love and love never found.
Now listen to this. Pete and Vinnie from
The Videls went on to form a New York
based pop duo called The Trade Winds.
They're the guys I mentioned at the top
of the show when I played The Human
Beinz updated "Malibu Version" of
"New York's A Lonely Town." Now
let's hear the original hit from 1965
waxed by The Trade Winds. You're
gonna swear it's Brian Wilson and
his Beach Boys. AHHOOOOOO!

"New York's A Lonely Town" - The Trade Winds
(Feb./Mar. 1965, highest chart pos. #32 Hot 100/#38 Cash Box)

Those were The Trade Winds with "New York's A Lonely Town," a Beach Boys
sound-alike about a SoCal surfer boy stranded in the Big Apple in winter.

That fab slab went top 40 on Cash Box and brushed the top 30 on Billboard.

If you're just tuning in, you've got the old Wolfman in your ear
on S-P-M-M Retrosonic Radio... where we go huntin' for
the great songs of the past and bring 'em back alive!

This is swingin' school, baby...
and the Wolfman's gonna teach
you a lesson. In 1962, singer
Buddy Greco fell short of the
top 50 with his release of
"Mr. Lonely" - same title -
but a different song from
the one you heard earlier
by The Videls. In 1964,
crooner Bobby Vinton
used the same backing
track from Buddy's
record and took
his version of
"Mr. Lonely"
all the way
to the top
of the chart!

"Mr. Lonely" - Bobby Vinton
(Dec. 1964/Jan. 1965, highest chart pos. #1 Hot 100/#2 Cash Box)

Awww, you listen to The Wolfman.

As long as you got the curves, baby...
I got the angles!

Now as you recall, I started
the show with a band from
Youngstown, Ohio, called
The Human Beinz. To close,
here's a terrific R&B group
from Akron. They're Ruby
And The Romantics, and
I've got their #1 charting
crossover smash from
the spring of '63. Baby,
you just wait and see--
"Our Day Will Come!"

"Our Day Will Come" -
Ruby And The Romantics
(Feb./Mar. '63, highest cht. pos.
#1 Hot 100, Cash Box & R&B,
scenes from Apr. 1989 film
Under The Boardwalk)

Mercy sakes alive, I see by the old clock
on the wall... there's a dead fly.

The sun's coming up and the
Wolfman gotta grab his fangs and go.

If you've been listening to the show at the
diner on the outskirts of town, be sure
to tip your waitress when you leave.
She works hard for the money, honey.

This is your old pal Wolfman Jack
reminding you to obey your ma
and pa. I'll see you next time
right here on the greatest little
station in the nation, S-P-M-M.
I guarantee we gonna rock &
roll ourselves to death, baby.
AHHHOOOOO!!!

  1. Welcome Dear Shady and it's time for the Wolfman. I dated a man who looked like him, did I mentioned that? He was my...um... buddy..lol. Anyhoo, That first song really does sound like The Beach Boys. I am surprised it came out in 2018. I had to read that 3 times. I do love the next songs which makes me think it was simpler times which it was not. I Keep thinking Frank Sinatra singing A Lonely Town but that is different. I love that Bobby Vinton song. This was another time to listen listen to some great tunes. I can't believe the weekend is almost done

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Welcome to Shady's Place, dear friend! Wolfman Jack fangs you for being the Early Bird this time. Congratulations, BB -- you win the 30-foot tall Shady Del Knight tube man to display on your front lawn!

WHAT??? You dated a man who looked like our Jack? I hope he didn't ghost you, as in hair today, gone tamale. :)

I'm pleased that your ears agree with mine on that first song, a cover of The Trade Winds signature song that I never heard before, waxed by the Human Beinz, a band best known for their 1968 hit "Nobody But Me" which is also a cover (of The Isley Brothers).

Seems like The Wolfman's platter parade got your toes tapping and turned your thoughts to those days of old we like to think were easier and simpler when perhaps they were not for most of us.

I'm glad you appreciated hearing one of Bobby Vinton's biggest hits and a favorite of mine, "Mr. Lonely," not to be confused with Paul Anka's "Lonely Boy" or Conway Twitty's "Lonely Blue Boy."

I'm very happy you were entertained by the Wolfman Jack show. Thanks again for hustling right over and being a Day One Dilly. Give my buddy Harley a dead possum to munch on and enjoy the week ahead, dear friend BB!

  2. I love Wolfman Jack so much. I remember listening to him on the radio and just loved his voice.

At first I thought The Human Beinz were The Beach Boys but I didn't recognize that song so I didn't think it was. They aren't bad though. The Marvelettes are new for me too.

In fact all of these songs are new to me. But I did enjoy seeing Wolfman Jack again. He was a hoot.

    1. Hi, Mary!

Thanks for coming over to join the fun with The Wolfman, dear friend! I'm delighted to see you here as the second place finisher this week, and so glad your comments are going right through.

I'm glad the post brought back fond memories of listening to Jack on the radio. The Human Beinz of Ohio had that top 10 hit I mentioned to Birgit (above), and they also charted that same year, 1968, with "Turn On Your Love Light," although the latter was a modest selling non-hit that peaked at #80 on the chart. The Marvelettes are a major Motown girl group that you might remember if you heard some of their other hits like "Please Mr. Postman," "Playboy" and "Don't Mess With Bill." Some people like them more than The Supremes.

I'm happy that your old buddy The Wolfman introduced you to seven new songs today, including two versions of the same song and two different songs that share the same title. Listening and learning is what it's all about here at Shady's Place.

I'm delighted that you enjoyed the show, the last of The Wolfman's sneak previews. Now stay tuned for the official debut of his brand new show Wolfman Jack's American Hot Wax coming soon to SPMM Retrosonic Radio.

Thanks again for coming right over, dear friend Mary. Enjoy your week and stay safe!

    1. Hi, Alex!

It's great to see you, good buddy. I thank you and The Wolfman fangs you for being here!

Yes, just in the last year or so, I found some excellent, larger size pictures of Jack that I never saw in previous searches. I couldn't wait to use them in this, his last sneak preview. From here on in, the lovable lycanthrope officially joins The Shady Bunch as host of Wolfman Jack's American Hot Wax, so stick around.

Thanks again for coming, good buddy Alex, and have a terrific week!

    1. Hi, Kelly!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming by to see how fangs are with your pal on the radio Wolfman Jack.

Yessum, The Wolfman prides himself on playing the greatest songs you never heard, along with the greatest songs you ever heard. Listen and learn is the theme.

I'm glad you recognized Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely" and the Ruby & The Romantics biggie "Our Day Will Come." As you noticed, both songs were presented in homemade Y/T videos that used old movie scenes as the visuals, a technique that I refer to as "a poor man's music video."

Thanks again for your visit and comment, dear friend Kelly, and have a wonderful week!

    1. Hi, Jerre!

Thanks for dropping by, good buddy! I'm happy that you tuned in the Wolfman Jack show and enjoyed The Videls group from Providence, RI. I was pleasantly surprised to discover them around a year ago and like their sound an awful lot. As Jack told us in the intro, the two lead zingers, Pete and Vinnie, went on to form The Trade Winds who gave us the Beach Boys soundalike song "NY's A Lonely Town." (The Trade Winds were actually referenced in an episode of Mad Men!)

As you can see, the Wolfman's playlist features four songs with the word "Lonely," two different "Lonely" songs, two different bands doing one "Lonely" song, and two acts from Ohio.

Thanks again for your visit and comment, good buddy Jerre. Stay tuned for "a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma" coming up in my next post on Friday, followed by the biggie you've been waiting for, the launch of a new 36-part Dell related series, the following Wednesday. Stick around!

  6. Hi Shady, I really enjoyed the music here, especially the last three songs. The Tradewinds do sound just like the Beach Boys. I remember that song very well and love it. Bobby Vinton was an amazing singer and this song tugs at my heart. When I first watched the video, I was shocked they would put that on TV back in the sixties! Then I realized it was a new video. I always like to hear different vocalists sing the same song. I could hardly tell the difference between the two, "New York's A Lonely Town." Thanks for the fun, Shady.

    1. Hi, Belle!

It's great to see you, dear friend! Thanks for joining the fun as Wolfman Jack subs for Shady and plays his stack of vintage wax on SPMM Retrosonic Radio.

Yessum, if you watched the TV series Mad Men, your ears perked up as mine did when one of the characters mentioned that The Tradewinds were in town (New York City) to do a show. Their Beach Boys soundalike record barely cracked the top 40 nationally, but it's a great recording and I'm sure it charted much higher in certain cities. It was big in my neck of the woods. I think the Human Beinz also did a fine job on their cover. I agree that there is very little difference between the two. I wish I could get more info about the Human Beinz' version. For nearly 20 years, there has been a revival lineup of the Human Beinz featuring their original lead singer. I read the following on Wiki: << The Human Beinz worked on an album of originals and 1960s cover songs in Pennsylvania in May 2010. This effort was shelved and never released to the public. >> I'm guessing that this cool "Malibu Version" of "NY's A Lonely Town" might have been one of the unreleased tracks from that 2010 recording session finally released in August, 2018, on the compilation CD In The Year 2525: '60s Hit Singles. As is too often the case, I could find absolutely no information about that various artists album.

Yessum, the video that goes along with Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely" was selected by the YouTube producer. It is a series of scenes from an unnamed vintage teen-oriented movie that I don't recognize. Of course, you also see footage of Bobby performing his song on a TV show of the period. As I searched for the title of that mystery movie, I instead got to reading the comments posted on YouTube in reference to "Mr. Lonely." They include the following:

"There is no way to listen and not be moved by this song..." "Takes me back to better times... "A time when songs had real meaning..." "None of today's throw away values..." "Wish I could go back to those days..."

I for one totally agree with those comments. Maybe you do as well.

Thanks again for coming to The Wolfman's platter party, dear friend Belle. Take care and have a wonderful week! P.S. - I think you might like the artist I feature in my next post which starts on Friday, even though you probably aren't familiar with her or her recordings.

  8. Happy Autumn, Shady! You and Mr. Wolfman got me in the mood for spooky season now. Huzzah! I'm not familiar with any of these songs, but you did get me hooked. I'm familiar with the Marvelettes and Bobby Vinton, but don't recall these songs.

Maybe tomorrow before the swing of my new job starts, I'll get into the groove again. Have a great thankful Thursday, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

You made it here just in time for Wolfman's Jack's stack-o-wax, dear friend. Thanks for coming and happy TT and autumn 2022 to you as well!

Yessum, I have so many H-ween related posts coming up that I needed to back-time into September and run Nancy Wheeler, Jess Parker and The Wolfman this month instead of next.

I'm pleased that you liked Jack's musical offerings and that you at least remember the marvelous Marvelettes and Bobby Vinton, if not these particular songs. They are worth remembering because they were substantial hits in the 60s and highly regarded to this day.

Yessum, let these songs jumpstart your heart tamale, and while you're at it, listen to the next batch of tunes that will be up and running on my front page by then. Thanks again for your visit and comment, dear friend JM!

  9. Wow, I'm super late to the party Shady! It's been a week of weird here but I'm glad to catch the Wolfman tonight! We didn't get to go to Chicago as planned as I'll explain when I blog so the week got filled up with work, some social dodas and other stuff. I enjoyed the selections here. I liked the Human Beizn version of that surfer sound a like Beach boys number. I remember Mr. Lonely and was happy you played Bobby Vinton's because that's the one I know. Wow, it's a depressing song and the video didn't help! Reminded me of the days of Vietnam and all the guys leaving hoping their girlfriends would wait and at least write! Anyway, I'm off to blog too and I hope not to be the late runner when you post again. Fall has arrived today officially and with it some cool temps...my fav! Have a great weekend coming up Shady!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

I'm thrilled to have you over, dear friend! I was afraid you were still in Chicago and might not be able to visit. Thanks a lot for coming to see Wolfman Jack just in time before he grabs his fangs and leaves the DJ booth.

WHAT??? You never went to Chicago? Oh, my. I hope everybody's AOK. I am eager to read all about it on your site.

Yessum, as you might have noticed, there are two music groups in Wolfman's show that are from your neck of the woods - Ohio - the first being the band you mentioned, The Human Beinz, and the second being the soulful R&B group that sang the showender, Ruby And The Romantics. I'm pleased that you enjoyed the Human Beinz' cover of The Tradewinds signature song. I'm also happy that you remember and like Bobby Vinton's sad soldier ballad "Mr. Lonely," a song that surely resonated with millions of families during the Vietnam War era and the decades that followed as American men and women left their loved ones behind to serve their country.

Happy autumn 2022 to you, dear friend YaYa, and thanks again for tuning in Wolfman Jack's latest and last sneak preview. Stick around for a new post coming first thing tomorrow morning here at Shady's Place Music & Memories!
