A little more about me now: I started out on the show as a
sweet, innocent, wholesome girl. That lasted five minutes.

I began to change when I slept with my boyfriend, the big man
on campus, then got involved in a messy love triangle
by falling for a social outcast.

Stranger things started to happen when our town was

  1. Tom,

No More Mr. Nice Girl, Nancy Wheeler brought some of the heavier (to me) sounds to come out of the 80s. "Your Love" and "She's a Beauty" are the only songs in today's line-up to reach my ears back in the day but I really enjoyed the introduction on the others. While it wouldn't have been my thing in the 80s I really enjoy these older tunes of yesterday and oddly I don't see them as heavy now just great rock n' roll! Crazy Linx has a whole lot of that 80s rock n' roll vibe in "Anthem For America". I really love the patriotic clothing and flags in the music video. I may have to check out more of their tunes. Thanks for sharing another excellent post filled with equally wonderful music. Have a great day, my friend!

PS: I think the layout mishap on my site is because I installed a plugin that threw things off. I deactivated it then deleted the culprit. Hopefully things will be back to normal now.

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for hurrying over to become the Early Bird this time, dear friend! I'm pleased to see your face in my space - Shady's Place.

Yessum, Nancy Wheeler's vol. 1 lineup includes several gems of 80s rock that aren't played very often in recent years, but they are highly enjoyable, listenable songs that were big at the time of their release. Honestly, I hadn't heard The Outfield's "Your Love," Rainbow's "Stone Cold" or The Tubes' "She's A Beauty" in eons and had forgotten all about them. When I recently discovered them on YouTube in beautifully remastered form, memories of how great those songs are came rushing back. Nancy's showender, "Anthem For America" is the hard rock find of the year for me - a sensational sight and sound blitz. I knew you'd like the cheerleaders in their American Flag costumes. I have two or three older Crazy Lixx CDs in my collection. On this new release, the Swedish band captures the authentic sound and spirit of the great 1980s rock and metal bands that influenced them. I'm so glad you appreciated their "Anthem." I've played it a dozen times and never grow tired of it.

Thanks for checking into that spacing problem on your site. It makes it a little harder to read longer comments when there is no separation between paragraphs.

Thanks again for coming early and checking out Nancy Wheeler's new series No More Mr. Nice Girl. Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Cathy!

    2. Good-morning, Tom!

I'm skirting around like a chicken without a head this morning. There's so much to do with little time to get it all done but I wanted to be sure to swing by to give you an update on my back issue. I got good news in a weird sort of way in that I have a herniated disc. I was a bit concerned the diagnosis was worse since I've had back problems for more than 30 years and I was certain that leaving it left unchecked for so long was going to return bad news. Thankfully that wasn't the case. In fact, the doctor said he sees no evidence that surgery is needed now and he left everything in my hands on how to be treated. I opted the easiest way to continue doing what I'm doing limiting activity and OTC pain meds as needed. I am seeing improvement even if it's slow and after looking my condition up online I learned that this could take as long as 6-months before the disc shrinks enough for symptoms to be little to none. I'm 4-months into so it looks like it may take me that long but as long as I get better then that's fine by me. With the diagnosis I'm feeling confident in resuming my elliptical exercises. Whether I get a chance today is yet to be seen but this is on my agenda to kick off again soon. Now, I'm heading over to YT to listen to Crazy Lixx. I may have to give them time on CAAC in the not-so-distant future! Have a wonderful Wild Wednesday, my friend!

    3. Good morning, Cathy!

Thanks for popping back in, my faithful friend! Thank you for the update on your back. Like you, I am very relieved to learn that the diagnosis and prognosis aren't as bad as you feared. I hope you can indeed make steady progress toward full recovery. As you know, it is important to get back into the swing of things and exercise regularly as soon as you are able. It is easy to make excuses and put exercising off week after week until one day you wake up and realize its been an entire year since you worked out. I have found that if you keep your body going every day your body thanks you. If you allow yourself to turn into a couch potato, a 15 pound dumbbell starts to feel like 50 pounds, and it gets harder every week to return to the shape you were in or even have the will to do anything.

I hope you find more Crazy Lixx tracks to your liking. As I mentioned, I have a couple of their CDs that were released several years ago.

Have a good one, and thanks again for the return visit, dear friend Cathy!

    4. Tom,

Thanks for dropping by yesterday and again this morning for my super packed Friday Fun Stuff post. By the way, my BOTB was scheduled for the wrong time so it didn't publish when I thought it would but it's now ready. Sorry about the screw up.

I appreciate your good thoughts and well wishes. You're very much right about keeping your body moving. It really does make a huge difference. My goal for October is use my elliptical trainer daily or at least through the weekdays while DH is working. That schedule works well for me and I don't feel like I'm cutting int our alone time but I know he wouldn't mind if that's what I wanted to do. He's so supportive.

I did manage to listen to Crazy Lixx quite a bit yesterday morning after leaving SPMM. I'm definitely going to give them a featured spot on SS. I just need to figure out when to do it. Well, I'm off and running this morning. I need to get several things tackled this morning in Blogosphere so I can my non-computer stuff done. Have a terrific weekend, my friend!

    5. Hi again, Cathy!

Thanks for coming back to chat with me here at Shady's Place, dear friend. Attendance is so low in my neck of the woods this week that, in the spirit of Halloween, I am thinking of renaming my blog "Shady's Ghost Town." :) Thank you very much for not "ghosting me," and for returning again and again, my faithful friend.

Yessum, I saw your embedded link in the FFFFF post and clicked over to the BOTB and cast my vote. No problem.

You are fortunate to have a supportive spouse. For those who complain, "I'm so busy that I just don't have time to work out," folks like you and I might urge that person to schedule their daily exercise session same as they would a business meeting or a doctor appointment, Then reframe the activity, turning work into play. I found this on the internet: << "Think of working out as something enjoyable,” says running coach Patrick Hammond. “Never think of it as something you have to do, but instead as something you want to do." >> To me that's key. Turn EVERYTHING into play. When work becomes play, you can't wait to dig in and earn the reward that comes at the end - that feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. As you work toward your fitness goals, note all progress, great and small. Keep that sense of forward momentum going.

I am flattered that my song and artist picks are the inspiration behind posts at CAAC.

Thanks again for stopping by and for being such a loyal friend, Cathy. Have a safe and happy weekend!

WHAT??? Are you saying that my good buddy Pat ate your homework? :) I'm sorry that the Blogger gremlins swiped your original comment. I never saw it. Thanks for taking time to post another one.

I'm glad to know that you love "She's A Beauty." I read that the song was inspired by Tubes lead singer Fee Waybill's visit to a booth outside a peep show in the Red Light District of San Francisco. You paid a dollar to talk to a nekked girl inside the booth. I also read that the slicker, more commercial pop rock sound of that single and of Outside Inside, the 1983 album from which it was released, created tension within the band between the rock purists and members like Waybill who wanted to move the band in that pop direction.

Thanks again for reporting in, dear friend Kelly, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  3. I love that song, "Your Love" by The Outfield. I still listen to that one.
    I love Stranger Things.

The Stacy's Mom parody is funny. i hadn't heard that before.

I hadn't heard Stone Cold in a while but I was a teen in the 80's so of course I love that song. The Tubes song is such a good one too. They played that song so much.

Lilac actually did a pretty good cover for Rainbow In The Dark but there will never be another Ronnie Dio. He had such a great voice.

Funny enough I've never heard of XYZ and I listened to ALL the 80's hair bands back then. Hmm, I like them though. Nor did I know Crazy Lixx.

    1. Hi, Mary!

I'm thrilled to see you, dear friend! Thanks for catching the premiere of Nancy Wheeler's new SPMM radio show No More Mr. Nice Girl.

I'm delighted that you watch and love Stranger Things, as do I. It's great to have a friend who immediately recognizes my favorite character on the show, good girl breaking bad Nancy Wheeler. I also like her mother Karen a lot, especially her season 3 story line depicted in those scenes in the "Stacy's Mom" parody video. The actress who plays Nancy's milf mama, Cara Buono, is in two other series I love - Mad Men and Supergirl.

I'm so glad that you remember and like "Your Love." The song is seldom heard these days, at least by me, but I think you'll agree its a feel-good, ear-pleasing classic of mid 80s pop-rock. Thanks for confirming that you were a teenager in the 80s. Nancy's got you covered with that song by The Outfield plus the great sound laid down by Rainbow and the song by The Tubes, two more rock relics you don't hear very often these days.

The vampirish LA-based family band Liliac specializes in Ronnie James Dio songs because lead zinger Melody Cristea is extremely fond of Ronnie and sounds a lot like him. When I worked in TV production, our crew went to Ronnie's show when his Sacred Heart tour brought him to the Tampa Bay area in the mid 80s.

I think XYZ sounds as much like Led Zeppelin as does Kingdom Come. I'm happy to introduce that band to you along with the 21st century Swedish glam rock/hair metal revival band Crazy Lixx. Their just released "Anthem For America" is my Pick to Click as the greatest song and video of 2021.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Mary. Please give Falcor a treat from Shady and enjoy the rest of your week!

  5. Hello Nancy, and Shady! Scootie and I had watched quite a few episodes of "Stranger Things" last year, and I remember Nancy from the series. In the video of Mike and Nancy's mom, I recognize some of the scenes. There are some really great scenes in the series, but it seems like some of the actors have moved on to other projects.

I love "Your Love" and the video is great! I didn't know who the band is, and these guys are cool with great hair! I hear this song at least once a day, and I watched this video twice! Thank you for introducing this great band "Outfield"!

A few of the featured songs, I don't know, but liked all of them. "Stone Cold" by Rainbow is good, and, fun to know that one of Deep Purple members is an active member of this group-he's looking good. Dio cover of "Rainbow in The Dark" is a really good band, super guitar playing. What a performance by all members...lots of energy, and great hair! XYZ and "Inside Out" is a good one with lots of testosterone floating around, haha!

I hear "She's a Beauty" frequently on my radio, but never heard of the Tubes! The vocals are great, and this video is cute and hilarious!

Good show, Nancy! Your final offering cannot be beat! Crazy Lixx? Well, their "Anthem for America" truly rocks! I love this-very cool!

Again, I apologize for being tardy...I did come by yesterday and read the post. We're expecting some heavy rain this afternoon, but, who knows! It was so humid outside yesterday, ugh! I'm ready for some steady mild/cooler weather. I hope you are doing well, Shady! Take care, dear friend!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

Welcome in, dear friend, and thanks a lot for stopping by! I'm happy to see you here tapping your toes to Nancy Wheeler's 80s play list.

I'm pleased to find another friend (along with Mary) who admits to watching Stranger Things. I'm glad you and Scootie found a TV show you can watch together. Scootie will have a long, flowing gray beard by the time they get the next season on the air. It seems to be taking forever.

Yessum, that parody song and video "Mike And Nancy's Mom (has got it going on)" shows scenes from the series, particularly Karen Wheeler's sexy story line where she becomes fixated on the studly young lifeguard and contemplates an affair.

The English pop rock band The Outfield came close to the top 5 in the U.S. with their catchy song "Your Love," but none of their subsequent singles reached the top 10 and only one made the top 20. Surprisingly, the band was a lot more popular stateside than back home in the UK. "Your Love" only reached #83 on the British chart - go figure! I'm glad you like the song and watched the video twice. It brings back an era when clean-cut bands scored hits with songs rendered in that melodic pop-rock style, doesn't it?

Like "Your Love," "Stone Cold" is a seldom heard rock relic. When I first noticed the vid on YouTube, I couldn't remember how it went. I was unable to hum it to myself before clicking to play, even though the title and artist were familiar. The song needed to play for a while until it reached a point where it was instantly recognizable as one of my favorites during the 80s. From that point on, there are catchy hooks and riffs galore. It surely is another lost treasure of the 80s.

How about those Cristea kids? They amaze me with their ability to channel the spirit of their idol Ronnie James Dio and perform a faithful cover of his hit "Rainbow In The Dark." I'm happy that you recognize their talent. In the two years since that video was made, the Liliac band has continued to grow in stature. I have another of their great cover performances coming up in this stretch of Halloween related posts, so stay tuned.

Many bands imitated Led Zeppelin back in the 80s and still do today. XYZ are convincing soundalikes on "Inside Out." I'm glad you were finally able to connect a band name to a song you often hear, "She's A Beauty." I am also thrilled that you give thumbs up to Crazy Lixx and their showender "Anthem For America," a call to the youth of the U.S. to dump the "disco," get with the program and embrace classic rock again. I didn't need any convincing. I love harder edged 80s style rock, and these Swedes perform it as authentically as any band in the world today.

Please send us your rain. We're getting a little dry again. It doesn't take very many days of the Florida sun beating down to bake the lawns.

Thank you again for joining the fun on Nancy's first show. Stick around. Coming up next Monday, it's the return of Shady Blue who'll do his best to get you Stuck Like Glue with a set of spooky songs for Halloween. I hope to see you next week, dear friend Suzanne. In the meantime, take care and have a safe and happy weekend!

  6. Does Stranger Things take place in the 1970s? It looks like it might.

Rainbow may have been Ritchie Blackmore's band, but that's not him singing lead on "Stone Cold" (you didn't say it was, but there might be some confusion anyway.) A dude by the name of Joe Lynn Turner fronted that version of Rainbow. I believe Blackmore is standing to the right of Turner, playing the guitar, as was his wont.

It's a funny thing about "She's a Beauty". I knew there was some sort of punchline at the end of the video, but for the life of me couldn't remember what it was. Does the boy exit the Tunnel of Love or whatever it is with his hair all mussed up? Is he wearing a mask? Is he dead? Oh, that's right, he's an old man! So am I apparently since I couldn't remember.

That's all...um... what was I going to say again?

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming by, good buddy!

Your hostess with the mostest, Nancy Wheeler, is practically your next door neighbor, because her sci-fi horror drama TV series Stranger Things is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. The first season begins in November of 1983.

Thanks for the extra tidbits regarding Rainbow. Some say Ronnie James Dio made every band he ever fronted. Since Dio is one of my musical heroes, I am not about to argue. The earliest collaboration between Blackmore and Dio happened right here in Tampa, Florida, in the weeks before Christmas, 1974, when they laid down tracks for what became the 1975 album Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.

I'm surprised you didn't have a thing or three to say about that showender, the Crazy Lixx video. To me it is the find of the year. At first I hesitated to post the song and vid for reasons I hoped you would bring up and discuss with me. If you look closely and/or freeze the frames, you will notice at the beginning of the video when the music starts a quick edit montage that includes images of the American flag being flown upside down. Wiki sez: << For hundreds of years, inverted flags have been harnessed as a signal of distress. The United States Flag Code expresses the idea concisely, stating that a flag should never be flown upside-down, “except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.” However, a U.S. flag flown upside down is also used as a means of protest, for example as a display of dissent against a standing government. It happened this year right here in my neck of the woods: << Several homeowners flew the American flag upside down near their homes. The positioning of the flags was apparently done in response to the results of the presidential election being certified for President-elect Joe Biden. >> At first I was concerned that the Swedish band Crazy Lixx was trying to make a political statement or pander to right wing extremists. However, I chose to take the songwriter at his word when he insists that the song is merely lamenting and protesting the sad state of the music industry in America in the nearly 30 years since the glory days of rock and metal which lasted from the 1970s until the early 90s. I choose to welcome "Anthem For America" as an important piece of work, a rallying cry to young Americans, including young at heart boomers, red state and blue state, to tap into the spirit of freedom and independence that rock generates and to come together united through our love of this exciting style of music, authentically performed by Crazy Lixx and other Scandinavian and European bands of the 21st century. I totally agree with their position that rock needs to make a comeback in America, to become as big a part of the music scene as it was in the 80s. I'm on board. I'm all in.

Thanks again for staying up super late to check out Nancy Wheeler's first SPMM radio show, good buddy Kirk. Have a great weekend!

  7. My thoughts on the Crazy Lixx video? Typical European satirizing of the United States, which they're certainly allowed to do. I don't buy it as a statement about the state of American rock.

Want to get back at the Swedes? Produce a video making fun of IKEA...Um, now that I think of it, you can't, because the Dutch bought them out. OK, how 'bout this instead? Make fun of Ingmar Bergman. Instead of chess, somebody plays Twister with Death...Oh, wait, that was already done in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, which came out 30 years ago...God, making fun of foreigners is hard...

    1. Fair enough, good buddy. As NLP teaches us, "The meaning of your communication is the response that you get." Therefore, whether sincere or satire, if "Anthem For America," the song and the video, can attract enough young Americans, get them thinking and digging into the archives, turn them into fans of the genre and launch a trend that unites this country behind something, anything... even lowly rock music, then I'm all for it.

Thanks again for your visits and excellent comments, good buddy Kirk!

  8. Hello Mr. Shady and hope your weekend is turning out shiny and bright. This past Tuesday I was with my hubby at the hospital because he got his hernia done. I have been caring for him as best as I can and now have a spare time to look at your recent post. I have to admit I am not one for heavy metal, big hair bands but love the edgy look of those kids that remind me of the dark side of the Partridge family. I like the Swedes who are telling the kids from our neck of the woods (well, more the U.S. than Canada but we fall under the same issue) to start listening to better music than the crap I often here nowadays. I love listening to some of the retro music of the 70s. I had no idea what "She's A Beauty" was until I started to hear it and how I know this song! Very fun and like the teen who is hosting it even if I have not seen the series. As for that mom...holy eyeshadow! She is looking for love in all the wrong places. Have a great day and hope you can turn a teen from listening to Rap crap, boy bands or those one person who sings but it sounds like the same song over and over (like what you hear on American idol) and have them listen to CCR, Beathles, Led Zeppelin, The Moody Blues or anyone else from that era that knew how to write good songs. Today, it sounds like they sing a few words and then repeat and repeat and repeat it ad nauseum. Hahahaaa. Canada is just as bad..we gave you Justin Bieber.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

It's wonderful to see you, dear friend!

Thanks for carving out a pocket of time to drop by and see what's shakin' at Shady's Place. You earn extra friendship credit for coming down on a weekend AND because you are in the midst of all those medical matters, yours and your hubby's. I applaud you for helping your hubby through these challenging times, and I'm sure he will be there for you in the coming days and weeks.

You must have been reading my mind (and my exchanges with buddy Kirk above). You expressed, perhaps better than I, what Crazy Lixx and other retro rocking Scandinavian and Euro bands have been saying since the start of the new millennium. American youth and the young at heart need to wake the hell up, snap out of it, pull themselves out of the doldrums, tap into the spirit, wave their freak flags high and come together, united by their love of rock. In 1979, rock hardliners burned disco records in a ball field bonfire, but even 70s disco is better than much of crap heard on the radio and on TV talent contests today. Sadly, much of today's music and too many of today's people just ain't got no soul, no rock spirit. The carbon copy clones and warbling wannabes can't compare to exciting artists like the ones you named, and classic songs they gave us in the 60s, 70s and 80s, the latter being the last great decade for music IMO. Thanks for weighing in on the subject, Birgit.

Yessum, Nancy Wheeler's show #1 play list actually contains more pop rock and lighter rock songs (4) than hard rock and heavy metal songs (3). From time to time, Nancy will play pop hits of the period along with soulful selections by artists like Lionel Richie and The Commodores.

Yessum, Cara Buono's Karen Wheeler, (the kind of "Karen" we can actually love) was the breakout star of season 3 of Stranger Things. I wish they would have kept her story line going. Cara later showed up in a recurring role on Supergirl.

Thank you again, very much, for making time for a visit and for writing such an excellent comment, dear friend BB. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers in the week ahead. Have a safe and restful weekend!
