"You've Made Me So Very Happy," a song penned by Motown's Berry Gordy,
Brenda & Patrice Holloway and Frank Wilson, and originally released by
Brenda in 1967. You just listened to the great cover by Blood, Sweat &

When Kooper left, he was replaced on lead vocals by the man you

To play us off, here are those men from down under, the Little River Band,
the Aussie pop-rockers who placed ten singles on the U.S. chart between
1977 and 1983. This one took a 22 week ride on Billboard. That's longer
than any other record by the band. Hang on-- "Help Is On It's Way," and
I'm Mona Wu, always here for you, doing my best to make you happy.
I hope to see you next year!
"Help Is On It's Way" - Little River Band
(Oct./Nov. 1977, highest chart pos. #14 Hot 100 & Cash Box)
Hi Shady,
ReplyDeleteI'm only familiar with Blood, Sweat, and Tears and Frank Sinatra! The rest of the tunes are new to me and I love what I heard.
I loved "Go, Jimmy, Go!" It's so wholesome and had me dancing around the kitchen as I cooked. I could see why it was a show opener. The Cowsills and Daniel Boone were other favourites of mine. Were the Cowsills a one hit wonder? If they were, it's a bummer that they were. I loved their voices, I loved their lyrics, and I loved their melodies.
Daniel Boone's diddy is perfect for cooking on a Sunday morning. I'm about to take a walk and will switch over to this sweet little tune as I take a walk before the heat and humidity come back.
I loved Mona Wu as host. I can't wait for more of her, dear friend! I hope you have a wonderful Sunday!
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteCongratulations are in order, dear friend. You get to wear the Early Bird crown this week, and no one, I mean NO ONE, can strip it from you! Thanks for coming over to meet Mona Wu of DC's L.O.T. series and listen to her preview tuneage.
Yessum, Mona selected the toe-tapper "Go, Jimmy, Go!" as her show opener to establish a happy mood and get you boppin'. In the early 70s, I got to know the artist, rock & roller Jimmy Clanton. Jimmy took a job as an oldies DJ at a radio station in my market. I used to call his request line and we'd chat. He's a nice guy, friendly and humble as can be.
The family group The Cowsills were not one-hit-wonders. After their first biggie "The Rain, The Park..." they scored two other significant hits: "Indian Lake," a chart-topper in New Zealand, top 3 hit in Australia and top 10 stateside, and their most successful single - the international smash hit "Hair," a cover of the title song from the famous 1967 musical and 1979 film adaptation.
Mona Wu defies you or anyone else to stay sad as you listen to "Beautiful Sunday." It's a classic feel-good song!
I'm pleased that you liked hostess with the mostess Mona Wu from Legends. Stick around for the first official volume of her show coming up next year.
Thanks again for dropping by early and have a wonderful week, dear friend JM!
Geez.... I can't remember the last time I thought about The Cowsills! I knew more of them than not this time, and a fairly eclectic group at that. I'm not sure I could pick a fave. Maybe the Blood, Sweat & Tears?
ReplyDeleteHi, Kelly!
DeleteIt's you and Pat in a photo finish for second place, dear friend! (Pat might have beat you by a whisker. :) Thanks a lot for joining the fun with Miss Congeniality - Mona Wu.
Yessum, I know that you have eclectic taste in music, and therefore the selection of tunes on Something Old, Something New, Something Happy, Mona Wu should suit you nicely. I'm happy that her play list brought The Cowsills back to your mind and that you like this happy song made famous by David Clayton-Thomas and BS&T.
Thanks again for showing up early to the platter party, dear friend Kelly. I wish you and my buddy Pat a wonderful week ahead!
I know Mona Wu from Legends of Tomorrow. I love that show.
ReplyDeleteThe only songs I knew were Frank Sinatra's High Hopes and Help Is On It's Way by Little River Band. But they were all good songs.
Falcor says, "Woof" to you and we both hope you have a wonderful week.
Hi, Mary!
DeleteI'm excited to see you and Falcor, dear friend! Thanks for coming over on your weekend to check out Mona Wu's sneak preview.
I suspected you might watch one or more of the currently airing DC Comics TV series, and I'm pleased that you follow Legends and know Mona Wu, the meek, quirky, perky young woman who occasionally does her best impression of the Incredible Hulk and morphs into a fierce beast to fight the bad guys.
I'm glad you remember and like Sinatra's "High Hopes" and the showender by The Little River Band.
Thanks again for taking this sneak peek at Mona's new SPMM radio show Something Old, Something New, Something Happy, Mona Wu. With Halloween approaching, I've got a feeling, that you're going to find a lot to like here in the coming weeks, songs that you know and like as well as characters you recognize from superhero and horror-comedy TV series and movies. Simply put, there's plenty of fun in store for someone with your interests (which are closely aligned with mine), so stick around.
Thanks again for coming early to claim the bronze medal as the third to arrive at Shady's Place. For placing third along with you, my buddy Falcor will receive a bag of Shady Del Knight shaped dog treats. Have a wonderful week ahead, dear friend Mary!
Good evening my friend - I've been in the studio all day working on a school days album that was ordered via my Etsy shop while the hubby is watching football which does not interest me in the least! I did watch our Giants win another baseball game and decided to take a quick break to check my emails. I had to come by and see what delights you had for us this week. As you may remember, Blood Sweat and Tears was the first group I ever saw live so I have a special fondness for them. I know the Little River Band but more for their song, "Lady." I only vaguely recognized "Help Is On Its Way." Thanks for giving me some new stuff to listen to as I continue working in the studio. Have a wonderful week buddy.
ReplyDeleteHi, Janet! Hi, Benny!
DeleteJanet, you are the third friend in a row to arrive with her dog, and I thank you for coming to see what Mona Wu's new radio show will be like. It'll be an eclectic mix, but all of the songs are picked on the basis of leaving you the listener in good spirits.
I'm happy to know that you are busy working on an order placed thru your Etsy shop. Mrs. Shady's son operates an Etsy shop and business is brisk. It was nice of you to take a break and hang out for a while here at Shady's Place - "Best Nothing-Burgers in Town." :)
Yessum, I remember us exchanging stories about BS&T, how their live show was the first you saw, and how I met and had drinks with David C-T in 1984 or '85 after one of his solo shows in Largo, FL. I was just now trying to figure out what I would have been doing way over there, quite a few miles from home, but now I remember that I was invited to that venue to serve as a "celebrity" judge at the Central Florida regional try-outs for Ed McMahon's TV talent show Star Search.
You are the second friend in a row to single out Little River Band as an act you well remember, albeit not this particular song, even though it remained on the U.S. chart longer than any other released by the Aussie band.
Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Janet. Please remember to walk my buddy Benny (he's at the window right now) and give him a Jerky-Treat from Shady. Have a terrific week!
Good evening Shady! This post sure did bring a smile to my face tonight! Even Jack stopped in the computer room and listened a bit..to the Cowsills. He had just seen something on TV about them. So sad that 2 in that family have passed away. I do believe they inspired the TV series "The Partridge Family". I just loved old blue eyes with those kids. How fun for those kiddies to say later in life..I sang with Frank Sinatra! So with a happy heart I'm heading to bed. Have a good week and thanks for the smiles!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteI'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming to the platter party thrown by "Little Miss Sunshine" - Mona Wu - one of my favorite characters on DC's Legends of Tomorrow. By day, Mona is a meek and mild food delivery girl for the Time Bureau. By night, she battles to save her city, transforming into a large, powerful, ferocious werewolf creature.
Putting a smile on your face is job one for me and my presenters, dear friend, and therefore I will proudly declare "Mission accomplished." I am particularly happy to know that the music my characters play sometimes attracts Jack to you side so that he can get a dose of happy and remember the good times of his early years.
Yessum, The Cowsills were the inspiration for The Partridge Family band and TV series. Actually, at last count, FIVE members of the Cowsill family are now deceased. They include the dad, Bud, who formed and managed the group, mama Barbara who co-managed and performed with the group, and Barry, Bill and Richard. It strikes me that all five of those family members died young, between the ages of 50 and 64.
Yessum, I'll bet those kiddos have vivid memories of the day they sat with Sinatra and sang "High Hopes." How about The Chairman cracking up when the boy behind him makes a funny face?
It is my pleasure to leave you smiling, dear friend YaYa. That's what I'm here for. Thanks again for dropping in and enjoy the rest of your week!
I'm afraid I'm going to have to correct Ms. Wu. While Sinatra did introduce the song "High Hopes" in A Hole in the Head, that movie was in color, not black-and-white. The clip you show looks like a TV appearance by Sinatra to promote the film. No biggie.
ReplyDeleteLike yaya, I too read somewhere that The Partridge Family was modeled after The Cowsills. Too bad that two of the Cowsills are gone now. If you count manager Reuben Kincaid (Dave Madden) two members, at least castmembers, of The Partridge Family are gone too, since David Cassady also died a few years back.
Blood, Sweat and Tears. Shouldn't there be a "Toil" in there? Maybe it was purposely left out to avoid a lawsuit by Winston Churchill's heirs.
Anyway, I've heard most of these songs before, and enjoyed hearing them again. If the point of this post is to put me in a good mood, it did just that. Now I have to get some shuteye. Tomorrow's Monday, the beginning of the work week.
Um...the good mood suddenly left me...Maybe I should listen to The Cowsills again...
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks for swinging by on day (night) one, good buddy! Your nocturnal blogging habits remind me of the Little River Band's hit song "The Night Owls."
Your clarification on the "High Hopes" clip is noted and appreciated. Mona's intro could have been worded better. In the film, Sinatra sings the song about the ant and the rubber tree plant with budding recording artist Eddie Hodges. The version posted here with the children's chorus was made for commercial release and has slightly different lyrics. I can't figure out which TV show that clip comes from. If you are able to provide an answer please do so. (I could always use the extra comment.) Speaking of correction, as I told YaYa (above) just now, FIVE members of the Cowsill family have died if you count their dad who formed and managed the group. They all died young! Thanks for adding the trivia about the death count among the Partridge cast. Meanwhile, scrappy, carrot topped munchkin Danny "Me no-likey liberals" Bonaduce will probably live forever. I will add that actor Jack Cassidy, father of teen idols David Cassidy and Shaun Cassidy, died tragically in a fire in 1976. Mrs. S and I recently watched Jack in the role of guest villain on an episode of Columbo.
I think the band should have been named Blood, Schlitz Malt Liquor and Tears... just saying...
It's unclear to me why your good mood came and went so quickly. Is it because you were up late on the eve of a new work week, or did you make the mistake of watching Rachel Maddow before bed?
Thanks again for coming, good buddy Kirk. I wish you well as you plow through your week!
Hey Tom,
ReplyDeleteI wanted to get over yesterday when I noticed I got an email notification but other things kept coming up but it's Monday morning and I'm ready to enjoy your tunes! You pull together an excellent collection of songs. Mona Wu (real name Ramona Young) looks very familiar so I had to check her out and yes, I know that face from the Syfy series Z NATION. I know all of your songs in this set. Little River Band was a group I enjoyed as a teen. They disappeared sometime in the early 80s. I could've sworn I did a post on this group but after doing a little digging I couldn't find them. I think it's my search engine on my site doesn't work right and I have a horrible memory but I'll keep looking! Oh yeah, I got a kick out of Frank Sinatra singing "High Hopes". :D Have a boogietastic week, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteHappy 4M Monday, dear friend! I'm delighted to see you! It's good to know that you are still getting those email notifications about my posts.
Wow, you have a good eye and a good memory, dearie. I didn't watch Ramona Young in the role of Kaya on Z Nation, but I knew from my research into her career that she is a popular actress who has appeared in the casts of edgy TV series like Man Seeking Woman, Santa Clarita Diet and Never Have I Ever. I love Mindy Kaling from The Office and The Mindy Project. Mindy created Never Have I Ever, a series based on her own childhood experiences. Never Have I Ever is being praised for breaking Asian stereotypes and just got renewed for a third season. It's on Netflix so I think I'll check it out!
I am also excited that you know all of the songs Mona played in this sneak preview of her show. I think I would have remembered if you posted a block of LRB songs at CAAC. Maybe you did it pre-2015 before we became friends. They had a long string of catchy hits. I'm glad you got a kick out of Ole' Blue Eyes crooning the optimistic ditty "High Hopes" with the kids. Just think. Those children are now 70+ years old like Shady!
Thanks again for your kind visit and cheery comment, dear friend Cathy. Have a marvelous mewsical week!
Tom,
DeleteI got my MRI out of the way, now for the wait! Alright, I appreciated your early morning visit to check out my Top Ten Tuesday music.
As I mentioned in my previous message I know I've shared some of LRB's music on my blog but WP's search indexing fails sometimes. I know every time I edit an older post (fix or remove broken links, etc) I look for ways to improve it while I'm in there. You're right, they really had the hits and their sound was just awesome. I loved listening to their music yesterday.
Ramona's character on Z Nation as Kaya was a fun - kinda nerdy, super smart, and quirky. She's a cute little thing. I've not watched any of the other series she has been in, though. Perhaps, I'll watch a trailer of these when I get a chance to see if it sparks any interest.
Have a terrific Tuesday, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteIt's great to see you, dear friend!
Thanks for updating me on your MRI. I will keep you in my prayers. I hope the scan provides answers and solutions and eases your troubled mind.
Seems like Ramona Young is building her acting career upon roles as quirky, smart, resourceful characters. They suit her well. She's a hoot in Legends of Tomorrow playing the meek, mild-mannered Mona Wu, who can turn into a large, terrifying werewolf when provoked or endangered.
Thanks again for coming to chat, dear friend Cathy. I'll see you tamale!
Tom,
DeleteWe cancelled Netflix a several months ago, so I won't be able to check out Legends of Tomorrow. I will try to keep this mind but of course, your posts will help to do that, as well. Thanks for joining me today for my mid-week Wild Wednesdays post. Have a great day, my friend!
Thanks, dearie! A few months ago, Mrs. Shady announced that we were cancelling Netflix, but it never happened because she realized that if we do she will miss two of her favorite series: Dirty John and The Crown. :) I would miss both of those along with The Flash, Supergirl, Stranger Things, Legends of Tomorrow and several other series I regularly watch.
DeleteHappy Wild, Wacky and Almost Wordless Wednesday to you, dear friend Cathy!
Tom,
DeleteWe may go back to Netflix but for the better part of a year or more what was available didn't suit us so we figured cancel then hopefully they'll have better content later. We have Amazon Prime and Hulu. And, we have SlingTV so we have a enough content to sift through for awhile. We'll probably subscribe to Showtime soon since the rest of Season 5 is now available but we'll wait a little before we do. A couple of months ago, Amazon Prime ran a special on the Epix channel 99cents for a month. We jumped at it because we wanted to see the newer series of War of the Worlds which is quite good. WE found another one that we like called 'Condor' based on the 70s 'Three Days of the Condor'. If you're able to watch these, then I highly recommend both! Thanks for dropping by this morning for a glimpse of newest TAD artwork and a hodgepodge of other memes thrown into the post. Have a great day, my friend!
Thanks, Cathy!
DeleteI'm always happy to get tips on TV shows we might like. Mrs. Shady is harder to please than I am. She has already bailed out on The Good Doctor, Good Girls, Goliath and other series we started watching together. Now I am watching them alone. I'd love to check out that new War of the Worlds series. I'm also interested in seeing what Condor is like. Thanks again for the tips!
I just finished the entire season of American Horror Stories (plural) on Hulu and I am also keeping up with the new season of American Horror Story (singular) as well. I have also discovered another series called Mary Kills People and it's really captivating.
Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend Cathy!
I want to learn a lot more about the Cowsills whom the Partridge Family is based on. When I read the little bit here and watched the video, I had to look them up. So many died way too young including one in hurricane Katrina!
ReplyDeleteI know the last song quite well along with High Hopes and You Made Me So Happy...excellent tunes.
I think I have heard of the Boone song but it has been years but I don't know the others which were a pleasure to listen to.
I hope you are doing well despite the hurricanes, heat and other nutty things. Wishing you well and I meant to tell you to, again, thank your wife and yourself for those great washcloths because we love them!!
Hi, Birgit!
DeleteIt's kind of you to stop in, dear friend! I hope things are trending onward and upward this week on your side of the screen, and I'm delighted that you found a window of opportunity to join the fun as that lovable lycanthrope, Mona Wu from Legends of Tamale, spins happy sounds to turn your frown upside down.
Yessum, The Cowsill family is riddled with tragedy. Four of them died way too young as a result of terrible illnesses and Barry drowned in Hurricane Katrina. Who would have guessed in the 1960s and 70s the awful fates that awaited the members of the wholesome family band beginning in 1985 with the death of mama Barbara at age 56?
I'm happy that you know and like several of the songs on Mona's play list. I defy you to stay down and depressed as you listen to Daniel Boone sing "Beautiful Sunday." It's scientifically proven to be impossible!
Bless you, dear Birgit. I am so glad to learn that you are getting some use out of the wash cloths Mrs. Shady made for you. She and I often talk about you and it's all favorable. I am still tickled silly over the Shady Dell Graffiti Card you made for me. Thank you again!
Yessum, please send us some of your snow. (I heard you guys have three feet of it on the ground at this very moment. :) We are sweltering down here with many weeks left until cooler temps prevail.
Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Birgit. Have a wonderful week and I'll see you soon at BB Creations!
Hi Mona Wu and Shady Bu! Jimmy Clanton is so cute! "Go Jimmy Go" is a good song, and I remember it well. My favorite of Jimmy Clanton's is "Just A Dream". I adored the song, and always sang along. I understand he wrote a lot of his material.
ReplyDeleteThe Cowsills are too good! I know it may be corny to some, but this group was so great and had it together. I have to say this is a well remembered tune! They are sort of right in there with Spanky and Our Gang. Daniel Boone is not a familiar name to me, but I also remember "Beautiful Sunday". Scootie was born on a Sunday, and I made a video of him and Karo when he was about 4 messing around in the back yard. I used "Sunday Will Never Be the Same" by Spanky and Our Gang to play with the slide show.
Tommy Rowe did some good work, but I don't remember "Heather Honey". And, I saw Blood, Sweat and Tears in concert one year. I'm afraid I only like a few of their songs, "You've Made Me so Very Happy" being one, and eventually all of their songs start sounding alike. I'm not fond of the "Spinning Wheel" song. I'm also ashamed to say I fell asleep during their concert, how awful!
Frank Sinatra is a cool guy no matter what, isn't he! How fun to sit with so many youngsters and sing "High Hopes" with them. I love this...it's the best performance for this song I've seen!
"Help is On The Way" for sure! What a group! The Little River Band is my favorite performance on this post. This is a timeless song, and I could stand to hear it once or twice a day. It can truly get your spirits up, and positive thinking! These guys are having a great time on this performance...they're so cute too! I am so impressed with the musical arrangement and the vocal key variations! Thanks for bringing this one back into my life!
Well, Mona and Shady, I've got to go. This post rocks-Kudos to you Mona Wu! Take care, dear friend Shady!
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteI'm thrilled to see your face here at Shady's Place, dear friend! Thanks for making time for a visit, and for checking out everybody's favorite shape-shifting wolfwoman Mona Wu, the pollyannaish pixie from the Time Bureau, as she presents a sneak peek of her new SPMM show coming in 2022.
I'm delighted that you found so much to like in this lineup of songs that's typical of what you're hear on Something Old, Something New. As I told friend Jessica (above), I got to know Jimmy Clanton when he landed a job as a DJ on a oldies format radio station in Central PA. I'd call Jimmy late at night on his request line and we'd reminisce about his old hits and other great sounds of the past. Jimmy is a really nice guy. I admire Spanky And Our Gang, and their best will be featured on upcoming volumes of SPMM radio shows hosted by Shady Green, Natalie Teeger, Allie Pressman and The Good Girls - Cindy, Patti & Jane. I'm sure Scootie, his dad and you all cherish that homemade music video you produced when he was poking around your Texas Garden at age 4.
Tommy Roe's "Heather Honey" made a run at the top 10 on Cash Box, and it was big in my neck of the woods. I'm sure it charted high on the top tunes survey issued by my local radio station because their DJs played it often during the spring of 1969 when I was dating the future Mrs. Shady #1. The song brings back fond memories.
Thanks for sharing memories of seeing BS&T live in concert. I understand what you're saying about the band's arrangements and David Clayton-Thomas vocals becoming repetitive after a while. As it is with numerous other artists I could name, their earlier recordings were the better ones. In fact, purist fans insist that BS&T produced their greatest recordings at the very beginning when Al Kooper was lead singer.
Imagine, Suzanne, those cute little kids singing with Sinatra are our age! It's hard to wrap your head around it. I am pleased that you like the LRB showender so much. I hadn't heard "Help Is On The Way" in many years before coming across this pristine music video on YouTube recently. I immediately plugged it into Mona's show. I think Little River Band was underrated back then and remains underrated today.
I hope these catchy feel good songs get stuck in your noggin and stay with you through the week, lifting your spirits over and over again. That's the power of good music. Mona will be back in 2022 to officially start her stint as a Shady Bunch DJ.
Thanks again for being here. I hope you and Scootie are well and in fine spirits. Stick around for my next post coming this Friday. KHJ Boss-angeles radio personality Robert W.
