FOREIGN LANDS!

I'm Shady Seaweed, here to

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

In this special edition of BIFL, I am pleased to bring
back for their third appearance at Shady's Place
The Hindley Street Country Club aka HSCC,
the world-renowned live studio cover band
from South Australia that I introduced last
year in my salute to Diversity and in my

For their first performance of my Biffle special, HSCC
tackles The Jacksons' 1979 disco funk hit "Shake Your Body
(Down To The Ground)." Out front on lead vocals are the
"HSCC Bad Girls," Pina Del Re, Nikki Heuskes & Kat Jade.

Next Hindley Street Country Club covers "Stop Draggin. My Heart Around,"
the 1981 hit for Stevie Nicks co-written by Tom Petty, a recording that had
Petty singing on the chorus and bridge and his Heartbreakers band playing
on the track. The HSCC version features vocals by Lesley Williams and
guitar and vocals by Dusty Stephensen.

Now here's the 1982 Michael McDonald classic "I Keep Forgettin'
(Every Time You're Near)" from his debut album If That's What It Takes.
Handling lead vocals this time for HSCC is Sarah Lloyde.

Up next, the ever popular Nikki Heuskes singing lead for HSCC
doing what could be considered in the context of this post an
answer song to Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin'."
Nikki's unforgettable as she covers Patrice Rushen's
1982 post-disco club hit "Forget Me Nots."

If you're just joining me, this is a special edition of my series
Bandstands in Foreign Lands, a salute to The Hindley Street
Country Club, the fine cover band from the land down under.
Here again is Sarah Lloyde on lead vocals doing her best

chart-topping single from Heart's 1987 album Bad Animals

You met Kat Jade at the top of the show as one of the "HSCC Bad Girls."
Kat, a talented songstress from Adelaide, South Australia, appeared
on Season 3 of The Voice Australia. Here's Kat singing lead as
HSCC pays tribute to the late, great Bill Withers doing
his signature song "Ain't No Sunshine."

In the summer of 1977 "Best Of My Love" was a #1 charting hit
for the Chicago-based R&B/Disco girl group The Emotions.
To wrap up this Biffle trip, here's our featured Aussie band
with a slightly different lineup of the "HSCC Bad Girls" -
Pina Del Re, Nikki Heuskes and Lesley Williams.

  1. Hi dear friend!

I wasn't familiar with HSCC, but now I am glad to be familiar with them! They are amazing and perform these songs well. I think they may do a better job than the originals.

"Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" and "Alone" were my favourites. I hope you feature this group again in the future.

Have a happy Monday, dear friend!

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Congratulations, dear friend - you're this week's Early Bird! I'm sorry you missed last week's post featuring one of Philly's Phinest - Hy Lit. I was hoping you'd run some of his East Coast tunes by your dad to see if he remembers them. Anyway, it's good to see you back and taking the latest Biffle trip with Shady Seaweed.

People have left comments on the HSCC channel stating what you just did, that some, perhaps many of their covers are better than the originals. I tend to agree. They are one of the finest cover bands in the world today.

Yessum, this was the Aussie band's third appearance at Shady's Place and I have more of their stuff in the pipeline. Stay tuned.

Thanks again for coming and have a great week, dear friend JM!

    2. Hi Shady,

I'm sorry I missed it too. I've been busy applying for a new job and vetting one company that offered an interview - which turned out to be a scam. My promotion isn't what was promised, it's actually more toxic than what I left, and I think I'm being set up to fail. I'm hoping to get out of there.

I could see that! Now, I hope once COVID-19 ends, they come visit the US and perform. That would be so neat if they did that! Now I'm going to listen to these covers all day. :D

Can't wait! Have a great day and week ahead, dear friend!

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for joining the Country Club, good buddy! I agree that the Australian band performed a cool and more than capable cover of Michael McDonald's 1982 solo hit. The band boasts a variety of excellent female lead zingers plus world class musicians that back them with a wall of sound that's as good as what you hear on the original studio recordings.

Thanks again for dropping in, good buddy Alex, and have a terrific week!

  3. My goodness HSCC certainly does a great job on these covers. Usually I have trouble with covers, especially in the case of a song like Stop Dragging My Heart Around which features two of my all time fave performers and while I still prefer my Stevie and Tom, this version was not bad. Thanks for some wonderful music today, my friend, I listened while I worked on my next A to Z post!

    1. Hi, Janet!

It's great to see you, dear friend! How's my buddy Benny today? Thanks so much for checking out my kavalcade of klassic killer kangaroo kovers from the down unders.

I'm thrilled that you appreciate these renditions of hit songs of the past, all of them performed within the last year or so by the Australian band HSCC. If their version of "Stop Draggin'" met with your approval, that's really saying something, because classic rock of the 80s is your strong suit and you have attended so many live shows staged by artists of the period. I'm delighted that you deem these performances to be good enough to play while you work on your A to Z post.

Thanks again for stopping by, dear friend Janet. I'll see you tamale on K-day at Janet's Smiles!

  4. Wow HSCC were awesome! I enjoyed each one but I think Alone is my favorite. Beautiful and talented describes these gals and they seem to have fun too! Had me singing along! Hope you have a good week Shady and all is good down south!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks for attending the show as The Hindley Street Country Club performs a medley of hit song covers using an array of lead singers. Kat Jade has become a favorite of mine in recent months and she has her own YouTube channel if you like her style. You are the second person to single out Sarah Lloyde's version of Heart's hit power ballad "Alone." You're right. All the women vocalists seem to have fun performing together and are happy to share the mic and the spotlight.

Yessum, all is good down here in Florida. Thanks for asking. I'm happy the news is favorable on your side of the screen as well, and pleased that you enjoyed HSCC's live show. Thanks again for coming. Take care and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend YaYa!

  5. I am glad you featured them more because they are so good. The 3 have great voices and harmonize so well. I also love that it is an actually full band with wind instruments and all. So much now is just synthesized and it lacks something just like CGI in the movies. We forget how great the original is. I enjoyed listening to each one.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for staying up late to visit and comment, dear friend!

I'm excited knowing your eyes and ears enjoyed Hindley Street Country Club. Yessum, the Aussie band features real live musicians playing actual instruments laying down a bed of sound behind a revolving lineup of female lead singers. Five different women fronted the band in this show held at Shady's Place: Pina, Nikki, Kat, Lesley and Sarah. HSCC primarily covers hits in the classic rock, pop, dance-pop and disco-funk genres. The band is tight. The sound produced by the musicians and singers is totally professional, full-bodied and HQ.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend BB. I hope your week is off to a great start and hope to see you again soon!

  6. Hello Tom,

I'm here! I'm here! Whew, what a week and it's only Tuesday!! I really appreciated the sound of HSCC. The song I enjoyed most in this set is their cover of Heart's "Alone". Thanks for the introduction and for your frequent visits this month to see my Looney Tunes A-Z Art Sketches. I think by the time May gets here I may be ready for a brief break. I'm definitely staying on my toes and falling flat on my face often. Have a good week, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for breaking away from the A to Z to check out the fun at Shady's, dear friend!

Wow - that's at least three virtual votes now for the Heart song "Alone." I always say it starts with a great song, and "Alone" is a great power ballad that's been covered by many artists. I'm glad you appreciated the other performances by this fine cover band from the land down under - HSCC.

You are quite welcome, dearie. You know darn well how much I enjoy gazing at your pencil sketches and color artwork. I know you must be pooped by now, and the Challenge still has a way to go. I remember in years past that you have taken a break from blogging after you cross the finish line.

Thanks again for swinging by, dear friend Cathy. I'll be seeing you tamale, L-day, at CAAC!

  7. Hi Shady! Bandstands in Foreign Lands is a pretty good venue to showcase talents that we don't see or hear everyday on radio or TV.

The Hindley Street Country Club is one group that totally gets around and gets it! The lovely vocalists aside, this band really rocks! They can adapt their sound to accommodate any genre of music-love the sax and guitar solos featured in "Shake Your Body" and "Ain't No Sunshine"! The Bill Withers song is so well done by Kat on vocals, and the band. The cover of "Best of My Love" totally rocks to the top-very good!

The girls do much justice to "Shake Your Body", and the band keeps the great beat going! They almost have a "Chicago"-like sound on this one. It nearly makes me forget the song is a Jacksons' cover, haha! (true)

I don't remember "Forget Me Nots" by Patrice Rushen, but the group did a great job and made the song their own. I also enjoyed the Michael McDonald cover of "I Keep Forgettin". I can kind of hear his rendition of the song, but Sarah kind of boots him off the scene with her version!

You had to throw two of my favorites in here, didn't you! "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" was so popular and I love it! This HSCC group cleverly covers the song, and the vocals are top notch! Great job taking this one on, and no pretenses about who they are-they don't try to imitate Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.

Well, we are to my favorite Mr. Seaweed! This song holds no sentimental feeling for me...no tears when I hear it! I just love the song, and Heart's talents. However, I must give a thumb's up to Sarah on this, throwing her beautiful voice out there, just being herself and bringing it home! Kudos to this great band for their fantastic talents!

Love this post, Shady! Great job, Seaweed! Take care, and have a great week!

    2. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming so early in the post's run.

I'm happy to know that you like "Biffle," the Shady Seaweed series that shines the spotlight on music acts performing on stages in other parts of the world, past and present. You put it nicely when you stated that The Hindley Street CC gets around and gets it. You can always tell when you are witnessing real pros doing their thing, and these guys and gals are world class. The comments they receive on their YouTube channel are overwhelmingly positive and supportive. I have noticed that lead zinger Nikki H. is especially popular with a large number of people who comment. I have a fondness for Kat Jade, the former contestant on the TV talent show The Voice Australia who now has her own channel.

Now that you mention it, HSCC would be great doing covers of Chicago hits, yet they seem to avoid them. Maybe they feel they cannot top Leonid & Friends, that Russian Chicago tribute band that I introduced on the blog a while back. HSCC excels on their covers of The Pointers, Tina Turner, Hall & Oates, The Doobies, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston and many other major stars.

"Forget Me Nots" was another huge hit in my region, a recording that led the "post-disco" movement following the backlash over Disco and the fall of that genre a couple of years earlier. I remember dancing to "Forget Me Nots" in clubs during my second stint as a bachelor. That's another thumbs up for Sarah's vocal performance on the band's cover of "I Keep Forgettin'." You are also not alone in favoring Lesley's cover of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" accompanied at the mic stand by Dusty doing the Tom Petty parts. Other readers have also mentioned that one as a favorite. Seems Sarah has emerged as your fave female vocalist given that you place her rendition of "Alone" at the very top of your list. Thanks for tagging that you also enjoyed HSCC's cover of The Emotions' signature song "Best Of My Love."

I selected these seven performances because they are among my top favorites by this band. I already used two of their other covers in the 2020 posts I mentioned. I am very pleased that you see and hear their greatness as I do.

Thanks again for coming by, dear friend Suzanne. Program note: Please join me if you can this coming Sunday, April 18, because it is another very important date on the Shady Dell calendar, a chance to honor and remember a genuine Dell V.I.P. Until then take good care of yourself and Scootie and have a great week!

How are you, dear Keystone friend and neighbor? Welcome to Bandstands in Foreign Lands (aka BIFL aka Biffle) hosted by Shady Seaweed!

I'm thrilled that you are just as excited as Mr. Seaweed over the talent and showmanship exhibited by the fine Aussie cover band The Hindley Street Country Club.

Thank you very much for paying a visit, dear friend Arleen. Take good care of yourself up there and please come back and see me again soon!

A removed comment is good as gold in blog land because it still counts, still adds to the running total, making the post and my blog appear more popular than it actually is.

Again many thanks for your "ghost" comment, good buddy!

  10. While I can't say I prefer any of these to the originals, they may be the next best things. Two stand out, "Alone" which seems to stand out for your other commentators as well, and "Ain't No Sunshine" (and I'm not sure I've ever heard the original, so I guess by default I DO prefer it.) I swear, for a second there during that latter song, I thought that Kit Jade (love that name) was going to morph into Janis Joplin right in front of my eyes. For me the weakest was "Stop Dragging My Heart Around". Nice try, and, really, it's no fault of their own, but Nicks and Petty's complementary vocals are just seared into my musical memory.

    1. Hi again, Kirk!

Thanks for staying up super late or arising super early to visit and comment, good buddy! I'm excited that you are responding so favorably to the covers performed by my special guests HSCC - The Hindley Street Country Club - a group of talented female vocalists and musicians from South Australia. Nearly everyone who leaves a comment is naming their faves in this set, and your Picks To Click are, for the most part, aligned with those of other friends.

I am especially happy that you singled out Kat Jade doing her cover of Bill Withers' signature song "Ain't No Sunshine." Kat (not Kit), a former contestant on The Voice Australia, occasionally sings lead for HSCC, is in the revolving lineup of the "HSCC Bad Girls" vocal trio that fronts the band, and also has her own YouTube channel. I already presented one of Kat's solos from her channel in a previous post. I will be bringing you more of her fine performances in the future. She's a great blue-eyed soul singer. If you close your eyes and listen to her vocal style, you might think you are listening to a young woman of color.

It's interesting that the HSCC song cover you picked as "The Weakest Link" (Remember that old TV game show? It's back!) namely their version of "Dragon Heart" :) by Stevie & Tom, is the performance several others picked as a favorite.

      (That's all I got.)

Thanks again for joining the fun, good buddy Kirk, and enjoy the rest of your week!
