HAPPY APRIL FOOLS' DAY!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteExcellent way to start April off with some great humor from the man himself, Rodney Dangerfield! He cracks me up just looking at him. His gags are hilarious and I loved him in Caddy Shack. I was reintroduced to "Rappin' Rodney" several years ago which totally slipped my mind but I remember well it being on the radio. Rodney's career really boomed in the 80s. What a funny man! I betcha he has the angels in stitches. Thanks for the laughs this morning. I appreciate you stopping by to vote in my April 1st BoTB and for a peek at my first Looney Tunes A-Z Art Sketch, my friend.
Respectfully yours, Cathy :D
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteBy golly, you finished first in the Race to Shady's Place this week! Thanks for coming early, dear friend, especially on a very busy day as you have two hops going - the A to Z and the BOTB.
I'm delighted that you remember Rodney Dangerfield, like his style of humor and remember his minor hit record "Rappin' Rodney" and the accompanying mewsic video. That video was popular on MTV and was played often on the mewsic video TV station where I worked in the 80s. I also love the movie Caddyshack which is loaded with great comedic moments dished up by Rodney, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Ted Knight from The MTM Show.
I'm so glad you found this year's April Fool's post entertaining. Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend Cathy, and enjoy the rest of your week!
Tom,
DeleteI'm not sure why Blogger time stamped me a 4:56am. We didn't get up earlier than usual. Hmmm, I guess it's a technical glitch but I did get off to fast start with everything going on yesterday. I hope I can keep up this pace. Caddy Shack did have multiple comedic talents for sure. Bill Murray and Chevy Chase were excellent, as well as Ted Knight. We saw Caddy Shack 2 but it wasn't nearly as good as the first. Thanks for dropping by this morning. I'm sorry there wasn't a Friday Sillies edition. Hopefully next week I can incorporate my normal content in more easily but don't hold breathe. :) Have a blessed Easter weekend, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteThanks for returning to chat, dear friend! I believe Blogger's time stamp uses the Pacific time zone. Regardless, you were the first to comment, and that means you take Early Bird honors at Shady's Place, no matter what time is was.
I'm happy that you and I share the same taste in comedians, comic actors and movies. I don't think I ever saw Caddyshack 2. I saw More American Graffiti and didn't like it nearly as much. Typically sequels are not as good as the originals. I suppose there are some exceptions but I can't think of any at this moment.
I will be back over to "C" you at CAAC tamale. Until then have a safe and happy Friday, dear friend Cathy!
Tom,
DeleteYou're right generally sequels aren't as good as the original but I do like the Die Hard, Indiana Jones, Dirty Harry, Ghost Busters (original cast), Stake Out, and a few others. Thanks for continuing to support me in the A to Z event this month, my friend!
You betcha, Cathy! You have my support in the A to Z and I'm enjoying your artwork again this year.
DeleteI'm sweet on Madeleine Stowe, and therefore especially enjoyed Stakeout and the sequel Another Stakeout.
Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Cathy, and have a wonderful week!
You always come up with the best on April 1! I always loved Rodney Dangerfield. Great humor that anyone could listen to and laugh out loud. Was Dangerfield his real last name? Just curious. Have a fun April Fool's Day Shady!
ReplyDeleteHi, YaYa!
DeleteYou take second place in the race to Shady's Place, dear friend. The silver medal is yours!
How's that wrist doing, Kath? I trust you'll be posting soon from the Pines with an update. I certainly hope the operation was a success and that you are well on the road to complete recovery. My heart is still hurting for you, knowing that you experienced pain, suffering and inconvenience at a time when the last thing you needed was more drama in your life.
Yessum, you have been following me a long time and have seen many of my annual April Fools' Day posts. I'm happy to know that you loved Rodney Dangerfield and appreciate what I put together this year. I just showed Mrs. Shady the post and she asked where I got all those jokes. I told her that I remembered Rodney using one or two of them on The Tonight Show. The rest of the material came from my noggin. I simply sat down and imagined what types of jokes Rodney would tell and they came to me.
To answer your question, Rodney Dangerfield was the stage name taken by Jack Roy, which was also a "stage name" adopted by the famous stand-up comedian who was born Jacob Rodney Cohen.
I'm so pleased that Rodney's humor got you giggling. Laughter is the best medicine and I am always happy to put a smile on your face. Thanks again for joining the fun and take good care of yourself, dear friend YaYa!
Hi Shady! I always liked Rodney Dangerfield, but I didn't know he had a rap video. Pretty cool, and funny with some impressive dancers and backup.
ReplyDeleteHappy Fool's Day to you! I have no tricks up my sleeve yet today, and I will probably lay low on pranks! Ha ha! Scootie has school until 1:10pm today, and out of school tomorrow for the Easter holiday.
Thank you for this cute diddy with Rodney, Shady. Take care, and have a very nice Easter weekend, dear friend!
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteWelcome, dear friend! As thousands cheered, you crossed the finish line to come in third in the Race to Shady's Place, taking sole possession of the bronze medal!
Happy April Fools' Day to you as well, Suzanne. I'm happy to learn that you know and liked Rodney Dangerfield, the much loved comic who, in the years since his death in 2004, has reaped numerous posthumous awards and honors. I'm excited to enable you to see for the first time the MTV video that promoted Rodney's record "Rappin' Rodney." The single was played heavily in my neck of the woods (in PA) and, after I moved to Florida in 1984, we played it on the MTV station where I worked here in Tampa Bay. I always thought the danceworthy record deserved a higher chart finish than #83.
I hope you and Scootie have a wonderful Easter weekend. Today Mrs. Shady and I are having a new heat pump installed at our house to gear up for the long, hot and humid months of spring, summer and fall.
Stay tuned for my next post on Wednesday the 7th when you will take to the sky on a Natural Hy. Until then stay safe, dear friend Suzanne and, once again, Happy Easter to you and Scootie!
I saw Rodney Dangerfield in Vegas in the late 80s. I saw Johnny Carson in Vegas in the late 70s. How about that! 😉
ReplyDeleteHope you and Mrs. Shady have a nice Easter.
Hi, Kelly!
DeleteHappy April Fools' Day, dear friend! Thanks for joining me, Johnny Carson and Rodney Dangerfield for some holiday laughs.
Wow, Kelly, this special feature is right up your alley. You were fortunate to have seen both of those comedy legends live in Vegas. I'll bet you caught Wayne Newton's show while you were there, too. Having worked at an NBC TV station throughout the 70s and into the 80s, I probably witnessed every appearance by Rodney on Johnny's Tonight Show.
Thanks again for coming to the giggle party, dear friend Kelly. I wish you and Pat a safe and happy Easter and hope you'll give my buddy a ham bone to chew on!
No Wayne Newton for me (though I love Vegas Vacation), but my son-in-law worked for him in Branson MO and got to know him personally!
DeleteThanks for the answer, dear Kelly. It's interesting that you've had an indirect "brush with greatness" by virtue of the fact that your SIL worked for Wayne in Branson and actually got to know him.
DeletePlease give Pat a good scratchin' all over and have a blessed Easter!
I love Rodney and laughed so much when he was on Johnny Carson. That video is hilarious and just bad...it's so good with the dancers and everyone twirling around poor Rodney. Thank you for the laugh and enjoy your Easter weekend.
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteLong time no see, dear friend! :) Thanks for coming over for a barrel of laughs as Johnny Carson introduces Rodney Dangerfield on The Tonight Show and the legendary comic does his stand-up routine. As I told Kelly (above), I worked at an NBC affiliate during Rodney Dangerfield's peak years and probably saw every one of his appearances on the late night Carson show. As you recall, Rodney occasionally had Johnny falling off his chair and unable to get up off the floor because he was laughing so hard.
I'm glad you got the giggles watching that official video promoting "Rappin' Rodney," a novelty single that should have charted higher, in my opinion.
Thanks again for dropping by. A word of caution: Don't try to eat that Easter egg we sent you. You'll get a bad case of cotton mouth. :) I wish you a safe and happy Easter, dear friend BB!
Happy April Fool's Day, dear friend!
ReplyDeleteI am not familiar with Rodney, but your blog had me cracking up! Rodney on Johnny Carson's show had me keeling over in pain from all the laughing.
Thanks for putting a smile on my face today, dear friend. I hope you're the prankster today instead of the fool. Happy Thankful Thursday as well.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteHappy TT and April Fools' Day right back at you, dear friend!
I'm surprised you aren't familiar with Rodney Dangerfield, a comedy giant of 20th century. You have to see his 1980 movie Caddyshack. The zany film boasts an all star cast of comedy geniuses and features a gopher who dances to the Kenny Loggins hit "I'm Alright." Rodney's music video for his single "Rappin' Rodney" was played in fairly heavy rotation on MTV in the weeks leading up to H-ween 1983.
I'm glad you enjoyed the one-liners uttered by Rodney in his stand-up set. Thanks again for coming and enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteI am ashamed to admit this: unless I'm seeing a movie in the theater, I won't watch movies at home. I tend to multi-task at home... writing, reading, scrapbooking, and TV and movies are just background noises. When I'm in a theater, it forces me to pay attention.
Maybe I'll see if I can catch Caddyshack on the big screen in Philadelphia. Since COVID, different outdoor spaces are having movie night outdoors. It's really cool. (To be honest, I had to let my Philadelphia Film Society membership lapse. Until the theaters open again, watching online from my couch is just useless and a waste of money for me. I want to support the business, but I have no idea when theaters will open and I can't justify $54/year until the theaters open.)
I might have to YouTube the rest. I hope that you had a great Easter and have a great Monday evening!
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteI see no reason for you to feel ashamed, der friend. You remind me of Mrs. Shady. Most of the time when she and I are watching a movie or TV show at home, I can't get her to actually look at the screen. She prefers to multitask - just listen to the show while knitting or doing some other type of activity. It drives me crazy because she misses important clues in mysteries and funny sight gags in comedies. Yet if that is what makes her (and you) happy, then who am I to question it? As a former producer and director, I remain glued to the set throughout, examining every detail within the frame. I don't want any distractions while I'm watching, and can't tolerate people talking while I'm trying to concentrate. In that respect I am at the other end of the spectrum. :)
Caddyshack is regarded as a comedy classic, so I think the chances are good it will return to a theater someday - maybe one of those Mugs & Movies type places where a server brings food and beverage to your table while you watch the film.
Yessum, we had a nice Easter and hope you did, too. Thanks again for coming back to chat and have a wonderful week, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteHaha, point taken. I don't like crafting in silence because if it's silent, I would want to sleep. HAHA! So, if I have the TV or music on, it's just background noise. Maybe it's a crafter thing? ;)
I did. My parents accept my spiritual journey, so they had Easter and I had my Passover Seder. It's a way we can all respect each others' religious choices. Hey, it's small, but sometimes baby steps lead to bigger steps. :)
Have a wonderful week!
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteMrs. Shady also falls asleep more easily if she is lying on the sofa in the family room with lights on and the TV set playing loudly! I'm the exact opposite. I need complete darkness and total silence in order to fall asleep and stay asleep. :)
I'm glad you and your parents are working out an arrangement of mutual respect as you each take your individual journeys.
New post coming tomorrow morning. I hope to see you then, dear friend JM!
Happy April to you too, my friend. I'm a day late I know but transcription and the A to Z have kept me busy! Rodney's facial expressions are almost as funny as what he is saying. Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteHi, Janet!
DeleteThanks for coming over to catch Rodney's "live" stand-up set on The Tonight Show, dear friend!
Yessum, Rodney had great material to work with and he delivered his one liners with expert timing. Moreover his facial contortions, gesticulations, frequent adjustments of his tie, mopping sweat from his brow and forehead - all of these extra touches helped make him even funnier.
Thanks for coming over during the busy A to Z, dear friend Janet. Have a wonderful weekend and a happy Easter!
Oh my gosh, Shady, this is wonderful. Rodney Dangerfield was the best! I remember Johnny Carson falling over laughing at his jokes. Hearing him again has me doing the same. Your post is a terrific Easter present to us all.
ReplyDeleteHi, Arleen!
DeleteI'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to and using your imagination as I present my version of Rodney Dangerfield's stand-up routine on Johnny's Tonight Show. If you're like me, Rodney's voice and style left an indelible mark, enabling us to hear his voice in our heads delivering the punchlines as we read them on the printed page. Yessum, a comedian knew he was a hit on The Tonight Show and bound to be invited back if his material had Johnny literally falling out of his seat and crawling around on the floor in laughter. You and I both witnessed moments like that when Rodney was a guest. There was no comedian sharper than Rodney in the 70s. He is missed.
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the post and regard it as an Easter present. Bless your heart, my friend! I do wish you and your family a happy Easter. Thanks again for dropping in. Please take good care of yourself and I hope to see you again soon, Arleen!
I admit I every now and then end my comments here on your fine blog with one of Rodney's catchphrases. It's not as well-known as "I get no respect", nor did the catchphrase originate with him, and is hardly unique to him, but I always associate it with him, as a guest on The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson hosted. Carson never truly interviewed or even chatted with Dangerfield. Basically, Rodney would sit on the chair next to Johnny's desk, and start rattling off one-liners (a sit-down as opposed to a stand-up routine.) Carson would at first politely and obligatorily offer a kind of contrived, essentially fake laugh, as he often did to make the guest look good. But the fake laughs would soon give away to genuine laughs (how can you NOT genuinely laugh at Dangerfield?) The more Rodney spit out the one-liners, the harder Carson, Ed, the audience, and whoever else was there would laugh. But it can't go on forever since you got to break for a commercial, which Rodney seemed to pick up on, because he would stop suddenly, look at Carson, shrug, and say "That's all I got," and even THAT got a laugh.
ReplyDeleteThat's all I got.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteIt's great to see you good buddy! Thanks for dropping in for some laughs as Rodney Dangerfield takes the stage and entertains Johnny, Ed, Doc, the studio audience and the viewers at home including you and me. By the way, did you realize that bandleader Doc Severinsen is still living and will be 94 this year?
Yes, I have noticed that you often finish your comments with "That's all I got." I remember Dangerfield getting big laughs from Johnny and the crowd when he'd abruptly make that announcement. While some guests remained oblivious to time cues and rambled on and on, forcing Carson to cut them off mid-sentence, Rodney was skilled in using his time and yielding to commercial breaks. I'm sure he kept one eye on Johnny and the other on Freddy de Cordova who was the show's producer from 1970 to 1984 and executive producer from that point on. Wiki sez: << During tapings of the Tonight Show, de Cordova would sit in a chair just beyond the guests' couch so that he could cue Carson directly and speak with him during commercial breaks. >> I loved the sit-down portions of Rodney's guest shots as much as his stand-ups. Whenever Rodney hinted that he wanted to segue into the next topic, Johnny artfully played straight man and set him up to deliver his zingers.
That's all I got. I'm glad you enjoyed the show and the music video in the middle of the set. Thanks again for coming by. Have a great weekend and a happy Easter, good buddy Kirk!
I bought a dog. I thought the dog would help me meet women. Turns out the dog was using me to meet other dogs...
ReplyDeleteI went to put my shirt on, and a button came off in my hand. I picked up my briefcase and the handle came off in my hand. Now I'm afraid to go to the bathroom...
We're in bed the other night, my wife rolls over and says "Take out the garbage." I said I alrady took out the garbage. She said "Fine, go out and keep an eye on it"...
When I was a kid, my parents took me to the beach and I got lost. I went up to a cop and said, "I can't find my parents." The cop said, "Gee, kid, they could be anywhere"...
Hi, John!
DeleteThanks for coming to Open Mic Night at The Funny Farm and doing your own mini stand-up routine, good buddy! That funny material! I can picture Rodney's face and hear his voice delivering those lines. I trust you were a Dangerfan too. On YouTube you can find a few of Rodney's guest shots on The Tonight Show. Throughout the 70s and early 80s I watched the show every night with the director and sound engineer in the control room of the NBC station where I worked. It gave me the opportunity to witness comedy history being made whenever Rodney was a guest because he consistently reduced Johnny to jelly with his brilliance.
THanks again for dropping by, good buddy John, amd have a blessed Easter!
That face! I'd never heard the "Rapping Rodney" song. Funny! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHi, Sherry!
DeleteHow are you, dear friend? Happy belated April Fools' Day and Easter! Thanks for coming over to catch Rodney Dangerfield's stand-up set.
Yessum, it was a challenge to find good color pictures of Rodney that represent the comedian at his peak in the 70s and early 80s. I was fortunate to find those three fairly good ones to use in the post. I'm happy to have introduced you to his novelty "rap" record, a single that was a minor hit around H-ween 1983.
Thanks again for stopping in, dear friend Sherry, and have a super week!
