A+ Songs from B, C and D Movies. Part 1:
Caution - Bikini Bunnies Are Bustin' Out All Over!

 Beaver, I just got a
 disturbing call from
 Miss Landers about
 an essay you wrote.

Gee, dad... all I did was
 prove that the earth isn't
 flat. It's just the opposite!
 When I saw this movie,
 I found out the truth.
 It's a bikini world!

 THE
 CASTAWAYS

HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!
Oh, Beaver... you never fail to
crack me up with those zingers
of yours! But, know something,
folks?... the little guy is right.
Skeptics might cry "Liar Liar,"
but The Castaways, the frat rock
garage band from the Twin Cities,
are here to prove Beav's theory.

Check out this performance by The Castaways, punctuated by that epic
primal scream on the original recording, in a scene from the 1967 beach flick
It's a Bikini World, winner of 50 Academy Awards including Best Picture! 😋

 "Liar Liar" - The Castaways
 (Sept./Oct. '65, highest cht. pos. #12 Hot 100 & Cash Box,
scene from April 1967 movie It's a Bikini World

 THE TOYS

It's a Bikini World also gave us a rare glimpse of the Jamaica, NY, trio
The Toys led by Barbara Harris. With a melody based on a Bach minuet,
"A Lover's Concerto" was the act's biggest hit, a #2 charting smash.
Their follow-up single, "Attack," featuring more of that angelic
girl group harmony, made the top 20 and is my Pick to Click!

 "Attack" - The Toys
(Jan. 1967, highest chart pos. #18,
from Apr. 1967 film It's a Bikini World

"Liar Liar" and "Attack" were
hit records, but bad beach
movies often relied on
throw-away songs and
nondescript instrumentals.
A good example is found
in this next scene from
Get Yourself a College Girl.
The rock & roll reel was
released around Christmas
in 1964, deep in the heart of
Beatlemania, yet the producers
would have us believe that
mid 60s teenagers preferred
jiggling to goofy, generic surf-
rock instrumentals. In the
following clip, look for stars
Mary Ann Mobley, Joan
O'Brien, Nancy Sinatra
and Chris Noel.

For me, what is particularly noteworthy about
this scene is one of the other dancers, the one
wearing a white blouse and black pants. It's
Roberta Tennes, the blonde beauty who
soon after became one of the Gazzarri
Dancers on the LA-based syndicated
television series Hollywood A Go-Go.
Shortly after that, Roberta wowed me
every weekday as a member of the
Action Kids, the dance troupe on
Dick Clark's Where The Action Is.
Sadly, Roberta died in 2015.
Let's relive happier days with
Roberta and the other women
as they take a dance lesson in
Get Yourself a College Girl!

 "Dance Lesson" (from Dec. 1964
movie Get Yourself a College Girl

 THE ANIMALS

Recordings by Eric Burdon's Animals have been used in the soundtracks
of three dozen movies and television shows, and the Brit band made
live appearances in several of them, including the above featured
film Get Yourself a College Girl. Burdon and company are seen
here in brilliant HD performing a cover of the Chuck Berry
song "Around and Around," a track from The Animals'
1964 debut US album.

"Around and Around" - The Animals
(from Aug. 1964 album The Animals
 scene from December 1964 movie

 DICK AND DEE DEE

In 1966 the popular duo Dick And Dee Dee joined Jay And The Americans,
The Astronauts, The Beau Brummels and Jackie & Gayle at Alpine Meadows
Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe, California, for the musical romp Wild Wild Winter
aka Snowball. Sadly Dick died in 2003 after falling from the roof of his house.
Let's turn back the clock and smile again as we watch this scene from the
film in which Dick And Dee Dee sing the soundtrack song "Heartbeats."

"Heartbeats" - Dick and Dee Dee
(from Jan. 1966 film Wild Wild Winter

 DONNA LOREN

Sixties "Dr Pepper Girl" Donna Loren appeared and performed in several
of the movies in American International Pictures' Beach Party series.
In 1965, in the 5th AIP release Beach Blanket Bingo, Donna sang
"It Only Hurts When I Cry" which, in some circles, is considered
her signature song (apart from the Dr Pepper jingle).

"It Only Hurts When I Cry" - Donna Loren
(from April 1965 film Beach Blanket Bingo

 HERMAN'S HERMITS

In 1966 Peter Noone and his British group Herman's Hermits starred
in the American musical comedy flick Hold On! aka Beat! Beat! Beat!
aka There's No Place Like Space. The cast included Shelley Fabares,
Sue Ane Langdon and Herb Anderson, the dad on Dennis the Menace.
In this scene, Herman's Hermits do one of their top 10 U.S.hits
and one of my favorites by the group-- "A Must To Avoid."

 "A Must To Avoid" - Herman's Hermits
(Jan. 1966, highest chart pos. #6 Cash Box/#8 Hot 100
from June 1966 movie Hold On!

 Easy there, Gertrude. Maintain
your cool, Sam. Don't get your
panties in a wad, Mildred! In
Pt. 2, Shady's got more surfer
 girls, beach honeys and even
 ski bunnies boppin' to the
 beat of super cool tuneage.
It's all comin' up after this
 word from our sponsor.

 HEH HEH HEH!

  1. The title of some of those movies - you just couldn't get away with that anymore.
That Animals song sounds nothing like House of the Rising Sun. You wouldn't even know it was the same band.
My wife has this old rock trivia game and one category is older, obscure music. We rarely get the answer right. However, we've learned over the years that if we don't know, just say Herman's Hermits - it is the correct answer for three of the questions!

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for hustling over to reclaim the title of early bird, good buddy!

Yes sir, strange but (un)true, every one of the movies featured in this post won at least 50 Academy Awards! :) The titles of these jiggle pix leave little to the imagination.

Like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Kinks and other English bands, Eric Burdon and his The Animals were influenced by U.S. rock & roll, rockabilly, blues and R&B artists and covered their songs on early albums and singles. Chuck Berry's "Around and Around" is an example. It's cool that not one, but three of the correct answers in your wife's trivia game is Herman's Hermits.

Thanks again for coming over early, good buddy Alex. Stay well and I hope to see you again soon!

  2. Well clearly some obscure stuff here today, Shady. ;) At least I've heard of The Animals and Herman's Hermits!

I'm not sure I realized Ken Osmond died last month. RIP.

And since I know you are always interested in our dogs, I'm sad to report that our sweet Alice died earlier this week. She was 11, but still...

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for dropping in, dear friend! How goes it in your part of the country today? We have been rain drenched for several days in a row, but the lawns are benefiting.

I realize you are too young to remember some of these artists, but I think older members of your family might be familiar with every one of them, if not the songs they performed in these el-cheapo 60s teen musicals. I'm glad you know The Animals and Herman's Hermits. "A Must To Avoid," the song the Hermits perform in the film Hold On!, is one of my favorites by the group.

Yessum, Ken Osmond "Eddie Haskell" died a few weeks ago. Ken's death came as a blow to me because he wasn't that old and because I loved the character he brought to life on Leave It To Beaver.

Oh Kelly, I am very sorry to learn that you lost another member of your beloved canine clan. If you do a post about Alice you know I will be right over. I can't remember what she looked like. I hope 11 was a ripe old age for her breed and that she died of natural causes and not by accident as did Mama Dog. I offer prayers that your heart be healed.

Thank you again for making time for a visit, dear friend Kelly. Try to have a good weekend although you are grieving for Alice.

    2. No post yet (and I haven't decided if there will be) on my regular blog, but I did mention her on the faith blog:

      https://ramblingsoffaith.wordpress.com/2020/06/03/mourning/

After seeing this, my husband and I were reminiscing about Ken Osmond becoming a motorcycle police officer as a second career. Yes... he was the quintessential smoke-blowing, butt-kissing teenager! A great character on the show!

    3. Oh... and talking about rain.... we had a pop-up storm last night that dropped 3.3" of rain (plus a little hail) on us in a very short time! Keeping my fingers crossed as Cristobal makes its way to the coast. It will all depend on where landfall is as to how much we'll get from it. I'd prefer to be on that cleaner west side!

    4. Thanks for returning and providing me with that link to your other site, Kelly. I am trying to compose myself as I write this reply. I am so dreadfully sorry that you lost your Alice. Thanks for letting me know that you discussed Ken Osmond with your husband. I always appreciated the fact that Ken kept his Eddie Haskell character real, rather than making him a caricature. I saw an interview with Ken taped several years ago in which he states that his fellow cops poked fun at him, calling him Eddie Haskell. For many years an urban myth circulated claiming that, after the Beaver series, Ken went on to become shock rocker Alice Cooper. Another widely spread rumor stated that he was porn legend John Holmes.

I hope you are spared a deluge of rain from that tropical system, Kelly. This hurricane season is forecast to be an active one and I live in "hurricane alley" over here, so I'm keeping a watchful eye.

Thank you again for your comments and replies, dear friend Kelly!

  3. It's not something I've ever done extensive research on, but I'm guessing most of those 1960s teen movie musicals were written, directed, and produced by people whose teen years were decades behind them. That they were so often spot-on with music (as opposed to the milieu they were depicting) shows that at least the middle-aged filmmakers were paying closing attention to what their teenage sons and daughters were listening to, if nothing else.

I recognize Johnny Hart's BC comic strip characters in that bit of animation. Yet in the comic strip itself, the one caveman has a wooden leg, but two real legs in the commercial. I wonder if the change was made because someone felt a wooden leg might deter any potential Dr. Pepper consumers.

Ken Osmond, RIP. His Eddie Haskell appeared in Leave It to Beaver only about half the time, yet that's the character everyone remembers best, even more so than the Beav himself. That's the sign of an exceptional actor. But he left acting as an adult, apparently because like a lot of former child stars, there wasn't enough work. Hope he got some satisfaction writing tickets to speeders.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming over so quickly, my good friend!

I think you are correct that most of the people who produced these genre films were middle aged men. As I will discuss in Part 2 coming up a few days from now, the beach movies mainly targeted an older male audience, men who sought to get a vicarious thrill from watching bikini clad lovelies dancing in the sand. The soundtracks of those low budget flicks were like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates. You never knew what you were gonna get. Usually you needed to sit through several goofy surf-rock instrumentals like that one with Nancy Sinatra and Mary Ann Mobley, but every once in a while a name act performed one of their big hits, as did The Castaways and Toys in Bikini World and Herman's Hermits in Hold On!... a movie with two alternate titles - Beat! Beat! Beat! and There's No Place Like Space.

Good eye in recognizing the caveman character in that Dr Pepper spot. I didn't notice because I was too busy watching for Donna Loren to reappear. You might be right about the reason why the wooden leg was eliminated from the advert.

Thanks for weighing in on Ken Osmond and Eddie Haskell, one of the great breakout characters in TV history. Eddie was originally intended to appear in only a few episodes and remain a minor character, but audiences embraced Eddie and the role was quickly expanded. I can easily understand how a role like Eddie Haskell would leave Ken Osmond permanently type cast and limit his choices in the years after Beaver left the air. However he did land a role in the 1983 TV movie High School U.S.A. which was chock full of TV favorites and former child stars including, from Leave It To Beaver, Tony Dow (Wally) and Frank Bank (Lumpy), Michael J. Fox from Family Ties, Angela Cartwright from Make Room For Daddy and Lost in Space, Dwayne Hickman from Dobie Gillis, Bob Denver from Dobie Gillis and Gilligan's Island, Todd Bridges and Dana Plato from Diff'rent Strokes, Nancy McKeon from The Facts of Life, Crystal Bernard from Happy Days (later "Helen" on Wings) and Anthony Edwards who would go on to appear in Revenge of the Nerds the following year and, a decade later, assume the long running role of Dr. Mark Greene as the star of ER.

Thanks again for swinging by on day one, good buddy Kirk. Stay well and have a great weekend!

  4. I am loving these oldies but goodies of the beach bunny bikini era. I have only seen Beach Blanket Bingo but gotta love Joel's McCrea's son, Jody crying...over the onions. Too bad he has since passed away too. I love The Animals and Herman's Hermits with all those gals dancing away. In the last clip I had to laugh that the lyric was saying looking into your eyes when the camera was looking at their butts. That Dr. Pepper gal has a great voice but too bad she is not as well known as so many others. Who knew Dr. Pepper and archery went hand in hand. I miss the B.C. comic strip.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks a bunch for coming over on the first day, dear friend! I hope you are feeling well this weekend. I appreciate your visit!

Hey, thanks for identifying the young man crying over the bowl of onions as Donna Loren sings one of her sig songs in Beach Blanket Bingo. I didn't know the guy was Jody McCrea, son of actor Joel McCrae and actress Frances Dee. It's interesting that mother Frances lived to age 94, father Joel to age 84, and Jody only to age 74. I see that Jody was in a ton of Westerns early on, including two films and a TV series with his dad. Next Jody appeared in a rash of beach movies including Beach Party, Muscle Beach Party, Bikini Beach, Pajama Party, the above mentioned Beach Blanket Bingo and How To Stuff a Wild Bikini.

I often wonder how Donna Loren escaped becoming a major star as a recording artist. She became most famous as The Dr Pepper Girl and for her guest appearance on The Mickey Mouse Club and performances in these teen exploitation beach movies. Donna had a good voice and looks that kill. She deserved to be right up there with the top female stars of the day. Fortunately Donna (now age 73) is still going strong in the 21st century. She looks great, is very successful at marketing herself and I get a sense that her popularity has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend BB. Take care up there and I'll see you again soon!

  5. Hi Shady,

I love B-rated beach movies, dear friend! Whenever Mystery Space Theatre 5000, Svengolie and all those types of shows play these gems, dad and I gather around the TV and watch. I'm familiar with the first two songs you posted. Such fond memories.

Hey, dear friend, I finally got power back after 2.5 days. My charger for my laptop is downstairs and I have to plug in. I promise to return after I get everything charged up. I can't wait to listen to these other gems.

    Have a great evening.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I'm happy to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to check out A+ songs from B, C and D movies.

I'm happy to know you and your dad have fun watching shows that poke fun at teen exploitation beach movies like these. I'm pleasantly surprised that you actually know the first two songs in the post. Both were hits when I was in my mid teens.

I'm glad you finally have your power restored in the wake of that awful wind storm and that you are recharging your laptop. More power to ya! :) I hope you will return to take the full ride back to the go-go 60s.

Thanks again for coming by, dear friend JM, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    2. Hi Shady!

Thanks for supplying this Monday's soundtrack! I have heard of Herman's Hermits, but it's been a while and I can't say I'm familiar with the song you're posted. It was fun and gave me a laugh.

All of these videos gave me a groovy laugh. I liked the beats and I really liked how they used humour. Good ol' fashioned fun! I especially loved the retro Dr. Pepper commercial. Thanks for putting a big smile on my face.

Mom started again and told me I abandoned the house. Started because I bought kosher chicken, which I eat, and I was planning to cook us all a meal. She told me I'm a spend thrift, and she hates me living here, wants me to fail on my own, and called me a traitor for abandoning the house and ruining their vacation.

Then she told me I don't need the stuff I buy. Ma'am, I earn my money and I pay you rent plus I buy my own stuff. They were both drinking.

I think she just saves stuff for arguments. Especially when she drinks.

And my aunt invited them to stay, neighbour with generators offered to take our frozen stuff, she turned her nose up. It's just really horrible. I think you're right - COVID 19 is driving up some tensions.

Thanks for adding some joy to my morning! It feels great to be back to work and being able to listen to sweet, sweet music.

      Happy Monday!

Thanks for returning to check out the rest of the groovy tuneage, dear friend! :) I'm happy to know the light comedy, dancing and innocent ditties in these vintage teen flicks relieved some of the stress you've been under. Regarding how your mother has been acting, I've been there. Typically, people store up pet peeves and in the middle of a heated argument they all come flooding out. The power outage and the COVID crisis ramped up the tension and BOOM. I'm so sorry. Try to maintain your cool and weather storms of all kinds.

Thanks again for joining the fun today, dear friend JM!

    4. Hi Shady,

I joined a Narcissistic Parent Group on Reddit and apparently, this stuff happens all the time. Hot air and don't pay attention. I'm sure dad's upcoming retirement isn't helping things, and we're both hoping he can find a new job ASAP. I'm anxious about it too, although I shouldn't be.

Music cures! I think tomorrow I will return for round #3. This is an excellent way to start the day! Have a great evening dear friend.

I hope you derive benefit from that group. Anxiety on multiple fronts leads to the kinds of blow-ups you have been experiencing. It's a good thing we have our music as an outlet.

    6. Yes, you're very right. Honestly, I have my own opinions about matters, but I keep them to myself. I guess as I'm adapting to a more frugal life, I'm starting to see some nasty patterns of non-frugality. Also, alcohol doesn't help things either.

The 50s and 60s were a fun period. I have to redo part of a project for work, so I am taking a half an hour break from classical and jamming to these tunes as I work on my project. :)

Have a great day, dear friend.

Thanks for taking a peek at the post, dear friend! I'm happy to know you found it entertaining to learn about these musical movies of the 60s with razor-thin plots and stuffed bikinis and hear the songs performed in them by popular recording acts of the period.

  7. Oh Shady! "Bikini Bunnies"...REALLY? Please tell me you left the theater after hearing the cool Castaways son "Liar Liar"! I always loved that song, and so cool to see a video, even though the dancer is not real great. Everything about that song is musically sound. The vocals and instrumentals are spot on! Thanks for giving us that one.

Dick and DeeDee were a great duo. I fondly remember their hit "The Mountain's High". It is sad Dick succumbed to injuries following an accident falling from a roof. And, how about that Deborah Walley-she really got around! I remember her from some of the Beach movies, and an Elvis movie! She was pretty talented and pretty!

Nope, I can't say I remember "Get Yourself a College Girl" either, or the dance video, although I do like the video with Roberta and 'what's her name 'Nancy Sinatra', haha! Looks like you dug pretty deep this time, Shady!

Of course, my favorites are Eric Burdon and Herman's Hermits! You never know what sounds are going to come out of Eric's mouth, and Herman has aged much nicer than when he was younger. I remember "A Must to Avoid" and always liked it. He had a very good group, as did Burdon with the Animals.

Gosh, I do remember Donna Loren also, but I didn't know there was Diet Dr Pepper so many years ago. I remember diet Coke coming out in the 80's, blahhh! I don't drink soda anyway, other than seltzer water. If I need some flavor I will squeeze some lemon or lime in it.

Shady, you've done it again...sifting through the cobwebs to find a bit of the old, and finding some new that we missed along the way! Good job! It is a "Lover's Concerto" to have the old greats brought back to us.

I did come by yesterday and read your post, but had to scoot out and run errands. It's a hot, but quiet day right now, and I hope you are staying comfortable. See You, dear friend! ♫

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm thrilled to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming to the surf party and listening to the tunes in low budget teen musicals of the 60s.

I agree they could have picked a better go-go dancer for that performance of "Liar Liar" in It's a Bikini World. She reminds me of the kind of gal you saw in local carnival sideshows. I didn't mean that YOU went into those girly shows, but naughty Shady did a few times. Sometimes I saved my dime and peeked through the hole in the back of the tent :)

Yessum, I always feel sad remembering that Richard Gosting ("Dick St. John") of Dick & Dee Dee fell from a ladder or his roof (I have read two different accounts) and died younger than he should have. Poor Deborah Walley also died young, at age 59, of esophageal cancer. Deborah played the title role of Gidget in Gidget Goes Hawaiian and went on to appear in several other beach pictures including Beach Blanket Bingo, Ski Party, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini and finally It's a Bikini World. I read that she developed a brother - sister relationship with Elvis after appearing with him in Spinout and she was a regular on the late 60s sitcom The Mothers-In-Law.

Nancy Sinatra was not yet a big name when she appeared in a relatively minor role in College Girl. Mary Ann Mobley and Chad Everett were the name stars at the time. I'm glad you enjoyed the performances by Brit bands The Animals and Herman's Hermits. I haven't see Peter Noone since that day in 1989/90 when he came to our TV studios to tape promos. He still had his big smile and boyish good looks back then and it wouldn't surprise me if he still does.

Good idea putting your own natural fruit juice flavoring in seltzer. That's the healthy choice. Mrs. Shady has been making me jugs of unsweetened ice tea and I drink several glasses every day with wedges of lemon.

We have had 4 or 5 straight days of rain, heavy at times, and the lawn has greened up nicely. It's June in Florida, and that means it's hot, sticky and buggy.

I'm very happy to know that you got so much enjoyment out of these movie clips. Keep in mind what the late, great Eddie Haskell said at the end of the post. This is only Part 1. Stick around because Part 2 comes your way next Thursday.

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Suzanne, and have a wonderful week ahead!

  8. Tom,

The film, "It's a Bikini World" sounds familiar but I haven't seen it. Great feature with the summer season just beginning to heat up. I love the name of the girl band, The Toys. I know I've seen the band name in my mewsic searches but honestly I'm not sure if I've taken time to listen to their stuff until now unless you've shared their songs in the past. I have a horrible memory. The film clip from "Get Yourself a College Girl" was fun. Who is the dance instructor? She looks very familiar. Ahh, that's sad to read about Ken Osmond. I didn't know that he passed last month. He's only two years older than my mother. Nice features today. I always leave your place with a smile on my face and lots of songs in my heart. 1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for coming by, dear friend! I'm happy to know you appreciated part 1 of my special feature unofficially kicking-off the summer of 2020 with a sampling of A+ songs from B, C and D movies of the 60s.

Talented and attractive as they were, The Toys never achieved the long term success I think they should have. They had one major hit with "A Lover's Concerto" but couldn't sustain their momentum. In that respect they remind me of another underrated soul trio The Flirtations.

To answer your question, the dance instructor in Get Yourself College Girl is actress Joan O'Brien. Take a look at this great group picture on Facebook showing Joan on the left along with other cast members of the mewsical flick including Chad Everett, Mary Ann Mobley, Nancy Sinatra and Chris Noel:

      https://www.facebook.com/GroovyHistory/photos/joan-obrien-mary-ann-mobley-chad-everett-chris-noel-and-nancy-sinatra-in-the-mov/2104399256537127/

Yessum, it shook me when I read that Ken Osmond died. Little by little, Boomer age folks are losing pieces of their youth.

I'm delighted to know that you left Shady's Place with a smile on your face and songs in your heart. I wish you and DH a joyous wedding anniversary celebration. Have a great week, dear friend Cathy, and stay tuned for Part 2 of this feature coming on Thursday!
