Let's Go-Go to a Surf Party, a Ski Party and a PJ Party!
(Part 2 of My Series A+ Songs from B, C and D Movies)

 Hi, I'm Clarence Rutherford.

The guys call me Lumpy uh, a real cool friend.
Welcome to Pt. 2 of Shady Del Knight's series
A+ Songs from B, C and D Movies. My father
says I'm grounded if he catches me hanging
out with Shady Del Knight.  He says Shady's
an even worse influence than Eddie. I'll take
my chances. Here's Shady now with more
cool tunes from low budget beach party,
ski party and PJ party flicks of the 60s.

I did the math. 99% of low budget "teensploitation" movies are schlock.
I'm pretty sure the actors who played
teenage characters in them were older
than I am now. 😃 The plots of those
movies are preposterous, the acting
is terrible and so is most of the music.
Watch the trailer of the 1965 cheapy
The Beach Girls and the Monster!

I read somewhere that 60s beach movies were aimed, not at teenage audiences,
but instead at middle aged men (like Shady) who wanted to gaze at bikini clad
women and relive their youth. I loved Annette Funicello but didn't care for
her beach movies. They aren't funny, most of the characters are unlikable
jerks and the music is awful. Occasionally however a genre film delivers
on the music, and that's what this series is about, salivating the best
performances culled from those B (as in bad), C (as in camp)
and D (as in dumb and dumber) flicks.

 JAMES BROWN
 AND THE FAMOUS FLAMES

Holy Godfather of Soul, Batgirl! It's James Brown along with the
late, great Yvonne Craig, together in the 1965 flick Ski Party
starring heartthrob Frankie Avalon and Dwayne Hickman
from TV's The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis!

You wouldn't expect to find Mr. Dynamite on the slopes or hanging out
with a bunch of snow whites at a ski lodge, but anything goes in these
lowbrow teen romps. Brother James steals the show in this picture,
performing a brand new song that went on to become the biggest
hit of his career a few months later-- "I Got You ( I Feel Good)."

 LESLEY GORE

Why beach movies are released in wintertime and movies set at ski lodges
are released in summertime is beyond me. Anyhoo, one of the shortest pop
hits on record was used in the Ski Party soundtrack. Here now is lovely
Lesley Gore singing her top 20 hit "Sunshine, Lollipops And Rainbows"
as she and her friends take the bus to fun and folic at a mountain retreat.

 JACKIE DeSHANNON
 PATRICIA MORROW & LORY PATRICK

Prolific singer/songwriter Jackie DeShannon appeared in two
rock & roll movies, C'mon, Let's Live a Little, a 1967 film
featuring Bobby Vee, and Surf Party, a beachy keen
1964 picture starring pop crooner Bobby Vinton.

In this scene from Surf Party, pajama partiers Jackie DeShannon,
Patricia Morrow and Lory Patrick stay up way past their bedtime
and feel a song coming on. Watch the fun as the girls cavort
their way through "Never Comin' Back."

 STAN GETZ &
 ASTRUD GILBERTO

In Part 1 you saw and heard The Animals perform a song in the 1964 movie
Get Yourself a College Girl. Also appearing in the film are Astrud Gilberto,
the Brazilian samba and bossa nova singer who cracked the top 5 on
the U.S. chart that year with the single "The Girl From Ipanema,"
and legendary tenor sax player Stan Getz who backed Astrud.
Here are Astrud and Stan doing their hit in College Girl.

 DONNA LOREN

As we gaze at Dr Pepper Girl Donna Loren above on the cover of the
September - October 1964 issue of the Dr Pepper Clock Dial Magazine,
a publication that was only available to Dr Pepper employees, and below
gracing a Dr Pepper calendar in the summer of 1966, the time has come to
wrap up my scholarly two-part salute to quick and dirty B, C and D movies.

Before we sail into the sunset, let's take one last spin around the dance floor,
groovin' to a hot number by that Pepper of a Girl, Donna Loren, as she sings
"Among The Young" in a scene from the 1964 teen romp Pajama Party
starring Disney regulars Tommy Kirk and Annette Funicello!

"Among the Young" - Donna Loren
(from Nov. 1964 film Pajama Party

 Beaver, I hope you
 learned your lesson.
 If you spend your
 time watching B,
 C and D movies,
 you'll become
 an F student.

 Yeah, woll... here's the thing,
dad. I don't know much about
 history. Don't know much
 biology. Don't know much
 about algebra. Don't know
what a slide rule is for.
But I do know 4 and is 8,
and if Donna Loren took me
on a date, what a wonderful
 world this would be.

Hey, got time for one more
drive-in ditty? Check out this
performance by an unknown
band in the 1965 film Go Go
Mania aka Pop Gear (UK title).
I never heard of these chaps...
but I think they've got potential.

Have a Shady day!

  1. Hi Shady!

I think they make beach movies in the winter and ski movies in the summer is because by the time we're all tired of each season, we're wishing for the next. Personally, I'd love to see a polar plunge movie! I love winter and I love the beach, so that would be a beautiful marriage!

I've never seen the ski movie with James Brown, and I think I'm going to have to check it out. I love the song that was in the movie, I love dancing to "So Good." A cover band I used to follow used to cover this song and it was fun dancing to. :)

Ah, Lesley Gore! You don't own me and it's my party and I'll cry if I want to! ;) I'm not familiar with the piece you posted, but I dig it. I loved Lesley Gore as a little girl and I'm starting to get back into her again.

Thanks for these precious throwbacks, dear friend. These helped me groove as I worked, especially twist and shout! I might play this later when I need an afternoon pick me up!

    Have a great Thankful Thursday!

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for popping in to become this week's early bird, dear friend!

I think you hit the nail on the head. It makes sense to release winter themed movies in the heat of summer and beach movies in the dead of winter because, after a while, people get tired of temperature extremes and yearn for the opposite. Why didn't I think of that? Fall fashions are rolled out in spring and the new car model year begins in September last I checked, so there are other examples.

I'm glad you dug James Brown giving audiences a preview of what was to become his biggest hit in that performance of "I Got You" in Ski Party. Glad you enjoyed the new-to-you Lesley Gore hit.

When you look at the girls in the audience screaming and crying as The Beatles did "Twist And Shout," you will have some idea of the electrifying excitement The Beatles generated. I wish you had been there.

Happy Thankful Thursday to you as well, dear friend JM, and thank you again for dropping by!

    2. Hi Shady,

Oh yeah. Being in Pennsylvania, I hear it every season. "Gosh, I wish it was cooler" or "Gosh, I wish it was warmer." Me, I would be happy if it was winter all year round! LOL!

I asked my dad if he ever heard of Ski Party, he hasn't and he never realized James Brown was in a movie. Tomorrow I'm going to send him this video. I think he might enjoy it.

Oh, I can imagine! Talking to some of my older co-workers at the library, whenever they talk about their fond Beatles memories, they just light up.

I love dropping by your parties! I'm going to listen again... the Boy just pooped and peed on my bed, so I'm washing everything and will have to sleep in the back room tonight. >_<

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Let me know what your dad thinks of James Brown's performance in Ski Party. Ask him if he remembers Yvonne Craig who played "Batgirl" in the 1960s Batman TV series. Yvonne is also in Ski Party.

Hey, dearie. I'm surprised you skipped over Astrud Gilberto's performance of "Girl From Ipanema." A few months ago when I told you it was coming up in a future post you were excited to see it. Don't you remember that conversation?

Yessum, I hope you will indeed drop by again and listen to the songs you missed on your first two visits.

I'm sorry to learn that your kitty messed up your bed. I hope you find a place to sleep and get a good night's rest. Happy TT to you, dear friend JM!

    4. Hi Shady!

I didn't get a chance to show him today... a lot of work issues and honestly I couldn't wait to get this day over with. I ended up sleeping on the couch last night and I was stiff as a board. >_<

I remember! I had to listen to it a few times and I'm glad I did. I find "Girl From Ipanema" fun. I love the old movies and musics.

I hope one of these days you post old toothpaste commercials or general commercials. They are fun too!

Have a great weekend, dear friend.

    5. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I'm sorry your kitty's "accident" on your bed forced you to sleep on the couch and wind up stiff in the morning.

I'm glad you remembered to listen to Astrud Gilberto's song. I already posted old TV commercials on both blogs. I recently posted one for Hai Karate After Shave. My very first post here at Shady's Place had a Top Brass Hair Dressing commercial in it, and on the old blog I posted one for Brylcreem, another hair styling product for men, and an old spot for Bardahl car engine oil additive.

Have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend JM!

    6. Hi Shady,

Whenever I hear "Girl From Ipanema", I think of the Ipana toothpaste commercials. They almost sound similar, so I think that's how I got the association:

There's a dental museum in Baltimore and that's where I first saw these commercials. Haha. :D Maybe once COVID-19 passes, I'll get down to Baltimore and visit the Dental Museum again.

Have a happy Sunday, dear friend!

    7. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I remember Bucky Beaver and Ipana Toothpaste from boyhood. I used the product for a couple of years. As I recall it tasted like Pepto Bismol. :) I didn't know there is a Dental Museum in Baltimore. Ar you sure you aren't lying through your teeth? :) It must be fascinating. Down here we have The Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) and Mrs. Shady and I saw a traveling cadaver exhibit there. Creepy!

Thanks for dropping by and enjoy your Sunday evening and the week ahead, dear friend JM!

    8. Hi Shady,

Hmmm... my little girl self would have loved that toothpaste then! I remember Colgate making a bubble gum/pepto bismol tasting toothpaste when I was a child. I actually love the taste of pepto bismol, so I liked that toothpaste.

      Sure is a place: https://www.dental.umaryland.edu/museum/
Mutter Museum in Philadelphia has exhibits like that too. Now, MOSI sounds up my alley and I bet that creepy exhibit must have been awesome. :)

Have a great Monday, dear friend!

    9. HI, Jessica Marie!

I don't like the taste of Pepto Bismol. As a child I could never keep the stuff down. :)

I remember you visiting Mutter Museum a few years ago. You would have liked the traveling cadaver exhibit. It was booked at various museums all over the country. MOSI is an educational experience any time of the year. I also think you'd enjoy The Florida Aquarium in Tampa and our Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota. We saw a tank filled with manatees there.

Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend JM!

  2. Oh yes, most of those movies were awful, but were fun to watch. I loved the Gidget movies and my favorite movie of teenage love was A Summer Place. I am sure if I saw it today, I would see how corny and badly acted it was so I won’t do that. I will let those feelings of young love remain in my head and heart as it was so many years ago.

    1. Hi, Arleen!

How's it going, dear friend? I hope you are well and in good spirits. Thanks for joining the fun today as Lumpy Rutherford tossed to Shady who gave us a look at more low budget teen movies of the 60s and presented some of the songs in their soundtracks.

The Beach Girls and The Monster must have garnered 50 or more Academy Awards, don't you think? :) Yessum, I loved the Gidget movie and TV series, too. I just looked it up, and didn't realize until now there were so many different Gidget productions and different actresses in the lead role - Sandra Dee, Deborah Walley, Cindy Carol, Sally Field, Karen Valentine and Caryn Richman. I also enjoyed Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue in A Summer Place.

You brought up a very good point, Arleen. As Boomers, we are always at risk for having our precious memories of youth corrupted, contaminated, tarnished, whatever you want to call it. It happens whenever a favorite hit from the 50s or 60s is re-recorded and used as the jingle for a TV commercial. It can also happen when we watch an old favorite movie or television show from the period. There is always a chance we will be disappointed and wonder why we liked it so much in the first place.

I hope those feelings of young love remain with you always. They are the Fountain of Youth. Thank you again for coming over, dear friend Arleen. Take good care of yourself and I hope to see you again soon!

That's a fun clip with James Brown. I love watching him move!!

I've always been a fan of The Girl From Ipanema, though I usually stick with instrumentals. Nice job by Stan Getz and Astrud.

    1. Hi, Kelly!

Thanks for joining the fun, dear friend!

You named a great film there, Kelly, one of my favorites - The Summer of '42. I saw it when it first hit theaters and several more times since then. The movie and it's evocative theme left an indelible mark on me.

"I was never to see her again. Nor was I ever to learn what became of her. We were different then. Kids were different. It took us longer to understand the things we felt. Life is made up of small comings and goings. And for everything we take with us, there is something that we leave behind."

I'm glad you read Arleen's comment and told me you like the theme from "A Summer Place" by Percy Faith and His Orchestra. That single was the biggest record of 1960 and spent an incredible EIGHT weeks at number one! (The Beatles had not yet arrived to create a tsunami on the placid waters.)

I'm pleased that you enjoyed James Brown's fancy footwork as he performed at the ski lodge in Ski Party as Batgirl Yvonne Craig and other ski bunnies looked on in amazement.

I'm glad you enjoyed Astrud and Stan performing their signature song in Get Yourself a College Girl.

Thank you again for dropping in, dear friend Kelly, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  5. I think Deborah Whalley was in most beach movies too. Good ole Deborah....I must see the bikini girls and the monster which looks perfectly horrid and it is a must see! I think James Brown wins the worst lip sync award ever! I am not racist and am just pointing out which many African Americans have said but when do they go skiing? I recall Trevor Noah saying this more than once and I had to laugh. The other songs are fun to watch and listen to and makes me want to see these films again. I have to say I like Beach Blanket Bingo and my favourite, The Girl in the Invisible Bikini. I have to say, my friends and I would sing and dance like that after driving for hours..it is a very typical thing to do actually. I do love that song sung by Astrud but that lady in the fluffy bathy cap hat has to go...she is in the background and I was laughing at that hat.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

I'm gonna start nicknaming you "First Day BB" because you are making a habit of showing up early. I appreciate it, dear friend!

Yessum, in one of my replies to a comment on my previous post, I listed all the beachy keen movies Deborah Walley appeared in. Yessum, I wanna see The Beach Girls and The Monster in the worst way! :) Let's review. Nancy Sinatra appeared in Get Yourself a College Girl and, as the narrator states on the trailer, Frank Sinatra Jr. performed in The Beach Girls and The Monster. I'm sure he regards it as the high point of his career. :) The jiggling Sunset Strip go-go girls alone are worth the price of admission. :)

I think James Brown's secret was to keep his feet moving so briskly across the floor that you never bothered to look up and watch his lip sync. The Girl in the invisible Bikini sounds like a Russ Meyer movie. :)

      You wrote:

I assume you are referring to that rousing number in Surf Party in which Jackie DeShannon, Patricia Morrow and Lory Patrick perform "Never Comin' Back." It is actually my favorite scene of the whole two-part series, a simply delightful song and dance that almost seems unrehearsed because it is so fresh and spontaneous. I love it!

I'm glad you enjoyed Astrud & Stan doing their big hit and sig song in College Girl.

Thanks again, a bunch, for being here on day one, dear friend BB. I enjoyed your comment. Take care and I'll see you again soon!

  6. Quite a bevy of musical beauties you have here, Shady! And James Brown as a bonus!

I've always liked "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows," and saw Lesley Gore do it live close to 30(!) years ago. She's the best. Jackie DeShannon is, was, and always will be one of the great ladies of rock and pop. Astrud Gilberto... what can I say? Still beautiful. I still fall in love every time I hear her sing. Donna Loren is a new one for me, and I'm off to find more by her.

    Great post!

    1. Hi, John!

Thanks a lot for swinging by, good buddy! I'm happy to see you again and hope you are doing well.

On Lesley Gore's scene performing "Sunshine, Lollipops" on the bus, I like how the YouTube uploader combined Lesley's performance with footage of the film credits and shots of Frankie Avalon, Dwayne Hickman, Deborah Walley and Yvonne "Batgirl" Craig.

John, I totally agree with you about Jackie DeShannon. She's a national treasure. Her performances are always fresh and spontaneous. As I mentioned in my reply to Birgit (above) the song Jackie performs in that scene from Surf Party along with her girlfriends Patricia Morrow and Lory Patrick is sensational, one of the best I have seen in any of these genre films, and I love watching it again and again. The subdued Astrud Gilberto song "The Girl From Ipanema" seems like an unusual choice to be included in the soundtrack of a movie of this type. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing her performance in College Girl with Stan Getz doing a thrilling albeit brief sax solo at the bridge.

Donna Loren was the 60s "Dr Pepper Girl." She didn't do as well as a recording artist as you might expect given her looks, charisma and singing ability. I hope you enjoy hunting for more of her videos. There is one on YouTube showing Donna as a young girl appearing on The Mickey Mouse Club. There are also a few of her performing in recent years that are worth checking out. Donna has aged very well.

Thanks again for dropping in, good buddy John. I appreciate your visit and comment!

  7. Hi Beachie Del Knight! It's a cool summer in the Alps alright! Love that James Brown sketch. I think that's the only reason I watched "Ski Party" 2 or 3 times. I especially got a kick out of James' exit from the lodge into the snow, still shuffling and kicking, haha! However, I must agree with Birgit regarding James Brown's lip syncing. I don't know if he was really that bad, or if the filming was off...neverthless, I liked his dancing!
This movie was more tolerable than a lot of the beach movies...I like ski clothes and lodge settings. And, when you have Lesley Gore (so sorry to lose her), Frankie Avalon and Dwayne, among just some of the fun actors, this film is really worth taking the time to watch. I don't know if I would be interested in watching "The Beach Girls & The Monster". It looks kind of dark and crazy!

If the Isleys hadn't done "Twist and Shout" in '62, the Beatles couldn't have taken it to another level in '65. I love the Isley's and their work, but John Lennon has a way of gratefully taking a good song and blasting it out of the universe with his growley and rupturing pipes! I can't choose...I love both versions and performances.

We weren't allowed to drink much pop when I was growing up and I don't remember Dr. Pepper even being around. I do know that the oldest bottling plant was in Dublin Texas, and was one of the few bottling companies in the US to continue using cane sugar year round instead of switching to High-Fructose corn syrup. I remember it closing about 5 years ago. Although I drove through Dublin a few times, I never visited the Dr Pepper plant, and I don't drink it. Donna Loren is a very pretty lady with a great voice, and I think she was a great spokeswoman for Dr. Pepper.

A pretty good lineup today, Shady. "The Girl From Ipanema" is a favorite smoothie of mine. It just flows gracefully, yet, it has meaning. I do think, though that Astrud could have put more feeling into the song as she presented it to make it more believable.

So, Go Mania Shady...this is another fine mess of music you've gotten us into, and thankfully so! I will just have to watch "Ski Party" again some time, haha! Thank you for a fun time, Lumpy, hope all this 'bikini' action hasn't worn you out!

Take care, Shady, dear friend, and have a safe and enjoyable rest of the week! ♫

    1. Hi, "Same Day Suzanne!" :)

Thanks a lot for hustling over so quickly to join the fun, dear friend!

Yessum, James Brown moonwalks out the door and into the snow at the end of his performance of "I Got You." It's a funny ending to the scene. Thanks for telling me that you saw Ski Party two or three times and that you favor a mountain setting for a teen musical over the typical beach setting. I agree it is a nice change of pace. Keep in mind that Dick Clark's Where The Action Is television show alternated between artist performances on the beach and performances taped on the ski slopes, plus numerous clips recorded at lakes, parks and other settings around the country, offering viewers a nice variety. Yessum singer Lesley Gore and "Batgirl" Yvonne Craig both died the same year - 2015. Both were a part of our youth and both are missed. How about Frank Sinatra Junior appearing in that goofy teen horror movie The Beach Girls and The Monster? I'll bet he wanted to crawl under a rock whenever somebody reminded him of that part of his career. Frank died in 2016, the year after we lost Lesley and Yvonne. One by one, the people who entertained us in our Boomer youth are passing away.

I totally agree with you that John Lennon and The Beatles took "Twist And Shout" to the next level. They truly made it their own. Wiki sez "It is regarded as one of the finest examples of British rock and roll for its vocal performance." I read that John turned in some of his greatest recordings near or at the end of studio sessions when his voice was raspy and almost shot. "Twist And Shout" is a fine example. Do you see those teenage girls going wild for the Liverpool Mop-tops in that video? I'm a guy, but I still feel the tremendous impact of their performances. They give me a rush and bring tears to my eyes. Simply put, 1964 was a great year to be age 14!

I didn't drink much Dr Pepper when I as young, and I haven't consumed soft drinks of any kind for decades. When I was a boy I drank lots of Dad's Root Beer. (Did you have Dad's in your neck of the woods?) I also drank Grapette, Squirt, Nehi Orange and Cream Soda. Thanks for the history lesson about the bottling plant in Texas. As I said before it is a mystery why Donna Loren didn't become a bigger star as a recording artist, given her beauty and talent. She certainly added a lot of zest to those beach pictures. Astrud Gilberto had a wooden singing style, at least on that major hit of hers. If the record targeted older listeners then I can understand why. My mother hated singers who emoted too much. She was used to artists that offered a very smooth and "calm" vocal delivery. She didn't like what we would call "exciting" music. For example, I'm sure she hated "Twist And Shout" by The Isleys and by The Beatles.

I'm so glad you got lots of enjoyment from Part 2. Thank you again for coming by so early. I hope Master Scootie is doing AOK and enjoying his summer vacation. Take care, stay safe and well, and I'll see you again soon, dear friend Suzanne!

    2. Hi again, Shady. I forgot to mention Jackie DeShannon. She is a doll, but, once again I missed "Surf Party". I didn't know that she presented such a great force and influence on our music scene, but I have always admired her. I also love "Needles and Pins", and watched her live video just a bit ago in black and white, coming from "Where the Action Is". I also listened to her recorded version-wow, I do remember that version. The Searchers did a stand-up job on that song didn't they! It is an all-time classic.

A 'wooden' singing style is a good way to describe Astrud Gilberto's stage presence. I actually think, if she had been dressed differently she would have presented more attitude with her performance. But, really, Shady, that is one very cool song!

Guess I'd better get busy now. I also wanted to 'jeer' you for putting that goofy song "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" into my sleep! I woke up with that one in my head and can't get rid of it now! Gee! I adore Lesley Gore, but that was probably my least favorite of her songs! I'm going to need some Aerosmith or Eric Burdon to wipe this one out of my head.

Have a great weekend, dear Shady!

    3. Hi again, Suzanne!

Thanks for returning to chat, dear friend! I admire Jackie DeShannon because she has a humble, self-effacing manner and so often flashes that genuine, sincere smile. When she does it lets me know she is having a good time. When an artist like Jackie is having fun, chances are the viewers will have fun, too. I'm glad you looked into some of her other songs and videos.

Ha! I'm sorry you got that Lesley Gore ditty stuck in your noggin. It Shirley is a catchy song. :) Whenever I want to clear my head of an unwanted song I start playing (in my head) Alice Cooper singing "I'm Eighteen." It works every time. I'm glad you use the same technique using Aerosmith and Eric Burdon. I'm sure they'd work for me as well.

It's delightful to connect with you, Suzanne. I hope you and Scootie are doing well. Stay tuned now, because I have a special 50th anniversary salute coming up next Tuesday. Until then have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Suzanne!

  9. Good afternoon (or more like evening for you) my friend. I don't remember watching very many beach movies. I'm not sure why because I did watch the Mickey Mouse Club with Annette and the gang and had crushes on most of the cute guys during that time. I would have been about 9 in '64 so maybe I was a little young. I do like the "Girl From Ipanema" and have the version sung by the late Amy Winehouse on my iTunes playlist. Have a great rest of your week!

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks for coming over to the surf, ski and PJ party, dear friend!

Truth be told, I didn't watch many of these genre films either. They were released when I was in my teens and by that time I was interested in more sophisticated and intellectually challenging forms of entertainment. In fact it made me downright angry to watch some of the beach movies with their broad stereotypes like simple minded surfer dudes and motorcycle gangs, unlikable main characters, lame dialogue and stale humor.

If you'd like to see Dr Pepper Girl Donna Loren as a young girl singing on The Mickey Mouse Club, take a look at this clip from that 1957 episode:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YS0Cx3CwgA0

I'm glad you like the Astrud Gilberto/Stan Getz number in College Girl. I get goose bumps at the point of the song when Stan performs his brief sax solo. I imagine "Ipanema" is an oft recorded song. I'll have to check out the version you own by Amy Winehouse.

Thanks again for making Shady's Place a part of your day, dear friend Janet. Stay healthy, give Benny a pat for me and enjoy the rest of your week as well!

  10. Lumpy neglected to mention Ski Party's cross-dressing storyline. As Leonard Maltin described it, "a poor man's Some Like It Hot"

While they won't make you forget Preston Sturges, Billy Wilder, or Mel Brooks, I've always found the Frankie and Annette movies (American International Pictures) to have a few laughs here and there. Annette was never funny, nor am I sure she was ever meant to be, but I thought Avalon was fairly good at light comedy (indeed I prefer that to his singing.) Don Rickles and and Buster Keaton are in many of those films, though I admit their best work may be found elsewhere. Dwayne Hickman of course was Dobie Gillis, and his dry delivery enlivens Ski Party. Then there's Harvey Lembeck's Erich Von Zipper, which started out as a Brando parody in Beach Party, then in succeeding films became a thing unto itself. Lembeck was 40 when he made his first beach film, but, hey, he's an outlaw biker. He supposed to be outside of societal norms!

Finally, look at James Brown skinny legs move! Michael Jackson's got nothing on him.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for staying up late to take a look and a listen, good buddy!

Great observations again, my friend. Frankie Avalon (as Todd) and Dwayne "Dobie Gillis" Hickman (as Craig) become Bosom Buddies in Ski Party. As Wiki explains: "Once at the rustic ski resort, Todd and Craig pose as frumpy, non-threatening, young English women, Jane and Nora, with terrible accents. When not interrupted by a mysterious ice skating, yodeling polar bear, or toying with psychologically-imbalanced and lederhosen-clad lodge manager Mr. Pevney (Robert Q. Lewis), they observe the girls in their group up close, to learn how to succeed with women, and figure out how they have gone wrong." I like Dwayne Hickman's dry delivery in all of his projects.

I agree that Frankie Avalon's light comedic acting in the beach movies was AOK, and I always enjoyed Don Rickles shtick, but I didn't like much else about those films, not Annette, not the use of comic legend Buster Keaton and not Harvey Lembeck's character.

I admire the makers of the 1964 movie Ride The Wild Surf because it was different - a drama instead of a lame brain comedy. Wild Surf starred Fabian, Tab Hunter, Shelley Fabares, Susan Hart and Barbara Eden. The title song performed by Jan And Dean was a top 20 hit single.

I agree that JB was dancing on air in that Ski Party scene. I'm sure Michael drew inspiration from Brother James in developing his own dance style.

Thanks again for adding so much to the discussion, good buddy Kirk. Take care, and be sure to join me for my next post as a celebrate a special 50th anniversary that I think will be of interest to you!

  11. Hi Shady!
This was a terrific diversion from keeping a watchful eye on the Bighorn Fire burning in the mountain range a few miles from my home. We’ve been on Pre-evacuation “Set” status for two days as unpredictable winds keep aerial water and retardant drop operations in full and steady force.

The beach “Monster” reminds me (now) of Dorothy’s Tin-man – draped in moss. But not back then, I can’t believe that guy scared me!

It was good to hear Lesley Gore. I loved all of her songs and admired how she chose to manage privacy and publicity.

I don’t recall the song from “Surf Party,” but what a cool weekend beach get-away! I can’t even remember the last time I saw baby-doll pajamas!

You’re right about Stan Getz being a legendary sax player! I can’t say just what the draw is, but I was compelled to watch Astrud Gilberto sing till the end ; -)

Love Donna Loren’s green shoes! I’m a fan of Dr. Pepper too.

“Twist and Shout” was a fun way to end a really good show, my friend!

    1. Hi, diedre!

It's very kind of you to drop in, dear friend. Thank you!

I just read about your Bighorn Fire north of Tucson and saw the pictures. I read that it was started by a lightning strike a few days ago and that there are other wildfires burning in Arizona, New Mexico, West Texas, Nevada, Colorado and California. Even worse, weather conditions are favorable for more fires to break out over the weekend. I'm sorry you have this worry on you, dear friend. I hope your property is spared, that you won't need to evacuate as have others, and that you and your family remain out of harm's way. I'll be thinking about you.

I'm happy to have offered a distraction from the fire threat. That Monster who peeps at bikini girls and attacks sinning lovers on the beach is a hoot, isn't he? The costume designer must have spent a dollar-98 on it. :) Can you imagine a struggling actor being offered that role? So, you were afraid of the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz? I was frightened by those flying ape-like creatures.

I'm glad you enjoyed the upbeat teen-pop ditty by Lesley Gore and that you admired Lesley's handling of her personal life later on. The three-girl performance of "Never Comin' Back" in Surf Party is my favorite scene of this entire two-part series. It's pure joy - so fresh and spontaneous it leads me to believe there was little time spent on rehearsing before the camera rolled. Stan "Getz" me every time with his sax playing. That throaty solo segment near the end of the song puts it over the top.

Are you a Pepper, dear friend? :) I'm glad you like Donna Loren and her green shoes which match her slacks. In case you didn't know, and for the benefit of other readers, the 10, 2 and 4 on the vintage Dr Pepper clock, bottle label and logo indicate the times of day the makers of the beverage recommend you reach for a Dr Pepper for refreshment. Three bottles of sugary soda pop a day will NOT keep the real doctor away, I'm afraid.

I'm glad you enjoyed the unknown mystery group performing "Twist And Shout" at the end of the post.

Thank you again for making time for a visit, dear friend diedre. I wish you all the best as you continue to monitor the wildfire situation there in the Southwest. I'm sending prayers!

  12. Well Gee Moon Doggy..I'm mean Shady...you brought me back some crazy memories from my childhood! Those movies were really dumb and I don't think anyone ever, and I mean ever, danced on the beach or anywhere else like that! OK, maybe a few did but not this gal! (But I did think it would be so cool to live in California and wear a bikini..but my Dad said no way!) But the 60's were a place where sand, and sun, and beach bums who could sing ruled. I don't think it was so bad and some good songs did come out of there. So I will dream tonight of my go-go boots and doing the "swim" and smile! Thanks for a fun time Shady Cool Daddy!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thank you for staying up late to visit and comment during this difficult time when you are still mourning the loss of your dear mother. I hope the fun and frivolity in this post offered a temporary distraction and a little comic relief and gave you a smile or two.

You're right, dear friend. In that Donna Loren scene from PJ Party, for example, I never saw kids in Pennsylvania or on the east coast dancing in that manner. If you watch the old clips from American Bandstand you will see how couples danced in Philadelphia in the early 60s and in Southern California in 1964 and the rest of the 60s when the show originated from LA. Did you ever wonder how different your life would have turned out if your dad had said "yes" and you had moved to California and adopted the SoCaL lifestyle?

Whenever you're feeling down and need a pick-me-up, I urge you to return here and play the video of Jackie DeShannon and her girlfriends singing "Never Comin' Back." I really think it will give you a smile and a lift. It's my favorite movie scene of this two-part series.

Yessum, it looked like Donna Loren and her Moon Doggy were doing the Swim in that clip. As I noted in other replies, it's a mystery why Donna didn't become as successful as Lesley Gore and other teen-pop singers of the period. Even Annette had a string of hit singles, and I think Donna had more talent, personality and charisma.

Thank you again for making time for a visit, dear friend YaYa. I hope the passing hours are healing your heart and allowing you to give thanks for the long life your mother enjoyed. She got to see many kiddos and grandkiddos in her large family grow and take their places as fine citizens serving their communities. I will always remember your mother.

  13. Tom,

Thanks for the stroll through the past with these tunes. I know the most popular ones in your set "I Feel Good", "Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows", "The Girl From Ipanima", and "Twist and Shout". Seeing old movie clips and mewsic videos from the 60s always makes me smile. The day when girls could be girls and guys could be guys. There was no confusion with the genders. Thanks for the flashback. Have a funtastic week, my friend!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for dropping by to see and hear Part 2 of my tribute to $1.98 budget beach movies of the 60s, dear friend!

Yessum, I figured you'd remember the four hit songs embedded in the post. My Pick to Click, hoever, is the song and dance by Jackie DeShannon and her friends as they arrive in California and get ready for some sunnin' and funnin' in Surf Party. With supper club crooner Bobby Vinton as the film's star and surf rock instrumental acts The Astronauts and The Routers as the mewsical guests, you can tell the film's producers were catering to the tastes of middle aged audiences more so than to teenagers. It's also interesting that the poster makes it seem like The Beach Boys are in the movie when they are not. It's a wonder they weren't sued by the Wilsons.

I'm happy to know these goofy movies with A+ songs in them put a smile on your face this morning. Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Cathy, and enjoy the rest of your week!
