Australia and New Zealand.
Plus we are the only members of
The Shady Bunch that will go by

not the names of characters we play.
Shady says it's because Antonia and
I have appeared in so many things he

Asher and I will be hosting a new
show coming soon to S-P-M-M called
Thunder Down Under.
Inspired by the Weekly Song Challenge and
similar blog hops, Thunder Down Under
asks us to pick and play songs in one of
the following three categories: songs
with titles or lyrics that mention
weather phenomena like thunder,
lightning, rain, wind or storms,...
songs with titles that contain the
word "down" or songs with titles
that contain the word "under."
See how it works? Sound like fun?

ANTONIA PREBBLE STARS IN THE BLUE ROSE
Oh my goodness my friend! What fun this looks like. I am excited to see what these lovely ladies come up with in their categories. I don't watch much TV anymore so I am not familiar with the programs or the actors but I did of course know the Hollis song and I am crossing fingers that Diana Ross will come to the Mountain Winery this year so we can see her. Happy Saturday to you!
ReplyDeleteJanet’s Smiles
Hi, Janet!
DeleteThanks for hustling over to take the Early Bird title, dear friend! Your victory is even sweeter when one considers that you live on the West Coast.
I'm delighted to have you over today as I present this sneak preview introducing another batch of future Shady Bunch radio personalities. I have watched all of the TV shows mentioned in the text, and these young women are my favorite characters from the respective shows. In the case of Asher & Antonia, the Aussie and Kiwi actresses, I am bestowing "lifetime achievement awards" on them, because they have starred in numerous projects I've watched and they are both sensational actresses.
Yessum, The Supremes will feature prominently in The 1600 Club series. It will be wonderful if you get to see Diana Ross at one of your local venues. I think you'll enjoy the array of songs in these series that reference weather conditions, have the word "down" or "under" in the title, start with the letter "I," have to do with "rescue" or are found in the actual soundtracks of those two 9-1-1 series. I'm happy to have aroused your curiosity.
Thanks again for coming over so quickly, dear friend Janet, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
I've always liked Bus Stop. That's such a pretty song.
ReplyDeleteThe Supremes have always been great. I really only knew Diana Ross as a solo person though and thought she was great.
Pretty sure Disco Inferno has been in several movies.
I watched 911 a couple of years ago back before I cancelled cable. But now all I have is Netflix and so I can't watch it anymore.
Hi, Mary!
DeleteThanks for swinging over promptly to grab second place in the Early Bird race, dear friend! You are the second friend living in the Western U.S. to arrive early on day one, and I appreciate it.
Yessum, "Bus Stop" is an irresistible "boy meets girl" pop ditty. I never get tired of hearing it, and I was pleased to find that nicely restored video of The Hollies performing the song on what appears to be Top Of The Pops in London.
Yessum, by the time you were born, Diana Ross was out on her own and racking up more hits as a solo artist. My new series "Meet the Supremes of Pennsylvania Avenue" will run through the best of her recordings and performances while still with the Motown girl group. Yessum, The Trammps gave us one of the biggest and most familiar genre hits with "Disco Inferno," and I'm sure it can be found in the soundtracks of numerous movies.
I hope you get a chance to resume watching these two 9-1-1 series. The characters are interesting and make you care about them, and the rescue scenes are often spectacular.
Thanks again for coming over early on day one, dear friend Mary, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Hi Shady,
ReplyDeleteYou had me grooving and jiving this afternoon during a snow squall. The weather is so frightful today with 50 mph winds as well. It's a good day to jam and jive to these golden oldies.
"Rescue Me", and "Where Did Our Love Go?" are two of my favourites. I love all of these groups and I loved revisiting all of these singles. The songs really match the personalities.
I can't wait to see all of these guest hosts throughout the year on your blog, dear friend. You chose some kick-ass personalities and I know I will be entertained when they host. I'll have to check out these shows as well.
Have a great Saturday, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteThanks for coming by on your Saturday, dear friend!
What???? You're having a snow squall up there? It's like summer down here. We have the a/c running full blast. Please send some snow our way! :) I hope you don't sustain any wind damage. The windy month of March is coming right up!
Yessum, I'm excited to preview all of these new S-P-M-M radio shows and introduce you to the celebrity presenters. All of these females are powerful and resourceful. They exhibit quiet strength I guess you could call it, and that goes for the characters played by the actresses from the lands down under - Asher & Antonia. The two 9-1-1 series are currently available on Hulu. Designated Survivor is on Netflix. The Newsroom is available on DVD, and most or all of the TV series and movies that star Asher & Antonia are running on Amazon Prime.
Thanks again for your day one visit and comment, dear friend JM. Stay safe and warm and let these Shady's Place tunes keep you company through the weekend!
Hi Shady,
DeleteUnfortunately,we lost power for an hour, then on FiOS box died. We are currently without internet, TV, and phone. A tech should come tomorrow. I'm shuddering about March. I'll send some of the cold your way, although today was 57, tomorrow and Wednesday 68. Supposed blizzard on Friday. Weird weather.
We may be switching from FiOS to a streaming service! I'll have to check out all of these shows.
Happy Monday, dear friend.
Hi, Jessica Marie!
DeleteI'm sorry your power and bundled services were knocked-out by high winds. In Florida, we often get high winds when it is very hot, and that is just miserable - like standing next to a blast furnace. I'm afraid winter is on the run here in Florida. We have the air conditioner running again today. If you can, please send us some cold air and a foot of snow. Both would be appreciated.
If you like Australian and New Zealand accents, then these Asher & Antonia series and films should be fun for you to watch. Prime has most or all of them streamking right now.
Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend JM!
Hi Shady,
DeleteWe finally got FiOs back! I'm cat sitting for Terry now.
I'll definitely check out these series on Prime. I'm a proud Prime subscriber. Any other recommendations?
Thanks dear friend. Enjoy the rest of your week as well.
Yessum, I do have another big recommendation. If you have Netflix, watch the series Ozark. Hands down, it is the best TV crime series I have ever watched.
DeleteI'll have to join or ask Tommy if I can share his account. He has Netflix. I definitely love crime dramas and I definitely need to check out Ozark!
DeleteHappy Thankful Thursday, dear friend.
I think you and Tommy would both enjoy Ozark. It has garnered numerous nominations and awards. I have selected three characters from the series to become new members of The Shady Bunch, so stay tuned!
DeleteHappy Saturday Shady! I always feel kind of bad because I'm not much of a TV watcher and don't know these shows. However, the actors here look good and if today's selections are any indication we'll have good posts in the future...as usual! Bus stop was a favorite of my youth as I hoped sometime I would share an umbrella with a handsome stranger! Ha! Have a good weekend and send some warm breezes our way!!
ReplyDeleteHi, Yaya!
DeleteThanks for coming to this week's platter party, dear friend! I am proud to give you a sneak peek at another group of upcoming S-P-M-M radio shows and their celebrity hosts.
Yessum, over the years, I have come to realize that I watch a lot more television than most of my friends and followers. Mrs. Shady and I enjoy watching a two hour block of shows every evening, and I do some additional watching during the day. For every 100 shows offered on subscriber channels, there are only a few that I genuinely like. Sometimes I follow a TV series because I relate to one character in particular. Sometimes I watch a show or a movie because I admire the personality and acting style of the lead actor or actress. Such is the case with Asher Keddie and Antonia Prebble. Every project in which they appear is "must see" for me. Most recently, you can catch Asher in Nicole Kidman's highly acclaimed miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers. Antonia is absolutely fabulous in Outrageous Fortune and in Westside.
Yessum, I think you'll enjoy these specialized theme radio series coming soon to Shady's Place. You can play along, thinking of songs with titles that start with the letter "I," songs that refer to weather conditions like "Bus Stop," and songs in various other categories, some that I haven't even mentioned yet. It will test your memory and keep you sharp.
Thanks again for dropping by and enjoy the rest of your weekend, dear friend YaYa!
Let's try one more time... (if I can remember what I said!). This is some really good music today and I knew all of it except for that 2019 number. I'll admit I had to hear Bus Stop to realize what song it was since I don't always know titles.
ReplyDeleteHi, Kelly!
DeleteBINGO, dear friend! Thank you very much for trying again and succeeding in leaving your comment. I very much appreciate the extra time and effort.
I'm thrilled that you knew all but one of the 5 featured songs, and that "Bus Stop" clicked as you started listening to it. As you might recall, I ran three other songs by the punk-pop band The Regrettes a couple of months ago in a volume of That Was Then - This Is Now. Lead zinger Lydia Night and her Regrettes were the sole "NOW" act in that edition of the series.
For you to label this batch of tunes as "some really good music" means a lot to me, because I know you are always honest in your evaluation. Be on the lookout for all of these personalities and their shows returning soon to Shady's Place.
Please give my buddy Pat a hug and a bacon-flavored treat for me and enjoy the rest of your weekend, dear friend Kelly!
Hi Shady and ladies! You all have really been busy with your shows and picking great songs for our enjoyment. Shady, I don't know any of these girls, but I trust they will bring some fun music to your blog.
ReplyDelete"Bus Stop" is one cool song. I love the Hollies, and this song will never get old. I like the Regrettes and "I Dare You". Their video was very colorful with some fun quick costume and dance changes!
Fontella Bass and The Supremes always get my attention. I liked seeing Fontella perform. It looked like they incorporated two different shows into her "Rescue Me" performance with Go Go girls in one, and her backup singers in another. I don't hear these songs daily, and it's fun to bring them back into memory and see the artists actually perform.
Wow! The Trammps! I didn't know their name, but love "Disco Inferno". This is a stand-up dance song with excellent vocals and instrumentals. What a great group! I still like Disco and I am saddened by the way it was treated and ultimately destroyed! This era should not have been treated any differently than other new "waves" of music and dance scenes that came about. Drug abuse was already in existence when Disco came along, and yes, I believe some folks got carried away during this time, but the music is not to blame.
Well, I enjoyed this post ladies and I am sure you will present some fantastic music and artists. Shady, I hope you are doing well and staying warm or cool! Take care dear friend!
Hi, Suzanne!
DeleteI'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thanks for checking out my latest preview of coming attractions!
My goodness, you are not alone in drawing a blank where these TV shows and characters are concerned. I thought for sure you follow 9-1-1 Lone Star, the rescue series set in Austin, Texas, and starring brat packer Rob Lowe. I am happy to introduce all of these ladies. They are all worthy of admiration because they represent the type of women I respect most, those with quiet strength, determination and resourcefulness.
How about that beautifully restored clip of The Hollies doing "Bus Stop" as the kids danced on Top Of The Pops? I'm pretty sure I'm right about the show. If you are a fan of the hit TV series Friends, then perhaps you agree that the song and video by The Regrettes seems inspired by the opening sequence of that TV series. Lead zinger Lydia Night admits to having been influenced by recording artists of the 60s, and it is no stretch to imagine that she was also influenced by that clever show open on Friends.
Yessum, that's a very special custom made sync edit video showing R&B diva Fontella Bass appearing on two different TV music series wearing the same outfit and singing her signature song "Rescue Me." It was a thrill to find that video just in time to run it in this post featuring the two first responder rescue TV series. The wildly gesticulating go-go girls are The Gazzarri Dancers on Hollywood A Go-Go. The backing singers on Shindig! are Darlene Love and The Blossoms, the group of session vocalists used heavily by Phil Spector on his recordings.
I got to know the Philadelphia group The Trammps in the mid 60s when they were still calling themselves The Volcanos and recording great R&B numbers like "Storm Warning" and "A Lady's Man," two platters featured on Jerry Blavat's TV show of the period Discophonic Scene. The Volcanos went on to great success as the disco act The Trammps, and never lost their soulfulness. I danced in discos and I bought 12-inch dance singles to play during my years working as a freelance DJ. I loved many artists and songs of the genre and agree with you that it didn't need to turn into a nasty backlash pitting disco fans against hardcore rockers. There's room for all kinds of people in this world.
Thank you again for joining the fun, Suzanne. I hope you and Scootie are well and in good spirits. We've been running the air conditioner off and on the last several days, an indication that winter is losing its grip here in Central Florida. I hope you have a safe and happy week ahead and that you'll drop back in this Friday when we mark the anniversary of the death of a Shady Dell V.I.P. Until then, take care, dear friend Suzanne!
Tom,
ReplyDeleteI came by earlier today and forgot to leave a comment. *smack forehead* I got sidetrack when I got an alert of purchase for more than $1000 made on CC that I did not authorized. Needless to say, this had me bonkers for a bit. Naturally, I immediately called my cc company. They cancelled that number so no other charges can be made on it. This is just ridiculous. I'm thankful I have text alerts set on my account, otherwise it might be weeks before I knew about it.
Anyway, I'm excited with your announcement of these additional post lineups. I, especially like the weather related idea. Will you offer prompts for others to play along or are you just going to entertain us with your song picks? Thanks for the introduction of The Regrettes. It'll be interesting sample more of their tunes.
Have a good evening, my friend!
Hi, Cathy!
DeleteThanks for coming over, dear friend! I'm pleased to see you visiting at this hour of the day. I'm so glad you dropped back in and let me know what you think of these new SPMM shows and song samples.
OMG! I can understand why you got sidetracked earlier in the day. I'm sorry somebody was trying to make purchases with your card. It has happened to Mrs. Shady and me several times. It's a hassle to get a new card, but we can indeed be thankful that we get alerts warning us of suspicious card activity.
As you know, I haven't participated in any blog hops or challenges in the last six years or so. They do not fit my style of blogging. Shows like Thunder Down Under, The "I" Team and others that I will unveil as time goes by are merely for the purpose of entertainment. They let you know the songs I like in various categories and enable me to showcase TV series that I have watched and enjoyed and identify favorite actors and actresses in those series. Therefore, I won't be posting prompts or linkies.
You already met The Regrettes three months ago when I presented three of their songs in my series That Was Then - This is Now:
https://tctgyb.blogspot.com/2020/07/that-was-then-this-is-now-vol-11.html
In your comment on that post last fall, you indicated that you didn't like The Regrettes very much. Maybe the fun song in this week's post, "I Dare You," will help change your mind about the group.
Thanks again for stopping by and have a wonderful week, dear friend Cathy!
Tom,
DeleteOh you're so right, you did previously introduce The Regrettes in a previous post and I remember now that I wasn't too impressed initially. I thought the name sounded familiar but as you pointed out, it has to be the fun uptempo of "I Dare You" that tickled my ears this time. I have yet to get over to YT to sample more of their music (probably for a second time) but hopefully today I can do this.
I didn't think Thunder Down Under would be a "blog hog" but I thought I'd ask anyhow. I can't wait to see what you roll out. I'll be thinking about you tomorrow and will say a little prayer for you, my friend. I won't be posting anything more until Sunday. Enjoy your week!
You're so sweet and kind, Cathy. Thank you for the well wishes! It's only my monthly infusion, but it does require more than 30 minutes of driving to get there and back, plus close to two hours sitting in the chair as the drip is administered. It blows the whole morning and leaves me feeling drowsy the rest of the day. Again, thank you very much for caring.
DeleteI'm happy that your memory is refreshed where The Regrettes are concerned. Their career was derailed by the pandemic, but they are starting to get back into the swing again with new material uploaded on their channel. I will be covering the best of their older stuff in future posts.
Yessum, in my Thunder Down Under song game, there are many familiar hits in the "thunder" category which includes references to rain, wind, etc., but relatively few in the "down" and "under" categories. However, I found enough to fill a half dozen or more volumes of their series.
I shall see you Sunday, dear friend Cathy. Until then, have a wonderful week!
Gracious, Tom I meant to stop by yesterday but one thing after another kept side lining me. Good grief! Anyway, I was very happy to see your presence at my place yesterday afternoon and am glad that it only left you drowsy. I know that has to be really a taxing day, though. I did manage to swing back to YT to sample The Regrettes music. I find it's hit and miss with their songs. I may have to give them more time or attention or both before I can say for sure how I feel about them. Looking forward to your Thunder Down Under series. It sounds fun! Take it easy, my friend!
DeleteThanks, Cathy!
DeleteWhen I discovered The Regrettes a year ago, I didn't know anything about the feminist punk pop and riot grrrl genres. I must say that the band won me over. I regard Lydia Night as a gifted songwriter and a charismatic performer. Their mewsic was an acquired taste for me, and I can understand why their feminist anthems might not appeal very much to you, even though I believe their songs fall into the lighthearted "girls just wanna have fun" category more so than genuinely angry and militant protests.
Thanks for coming back to chat, dear friend Cathy. I hope your week is going well and I thank you again for the well wishes as I continue my necessary treatments at the clinic. See you soon!
Hello and good evening Mr. Shady. I enjoyed learning about these young actresses from down under. Unless someone becomes mega famous, we don't learn about all the other actors and actresses out there in the dark...sorry went a bit Norma Desmond. I so enjoyed all these songs because I love the early stuff. The Hollies are great and I am surprised I don't own a record of theirs. The second song is new (to me) but it is much better than the average crappola sent to hurt our eardrums. The Supremes are always just the cherry on top or should I say, that mammoth beehive Diana has. I loved the 3rd song and know it so well but didn't know the lady's name. I love her cool outfit she is wearing. It makes me think of Emma Peel. The Disco is back with these greats who rock funky outfits and, of course, the white shoes. I hope your weekend has been lovely and the week ahead a fun one.
ReplyDeleteHi, Birgit!
DeleteI'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for making a surprise evening visit to Shady's Place!
I appreciate your observations about actors and actresses from lands down under. For many years, Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts were the only Aussie actresses I could name. However, when I watched the 1997 Australian film Under the Lighthouse Dancing in order to fulfill my mission as a Naomi Watts "completist," I discovered another marvelous actress by the name of Jacqueline McKenzie. I went on to watch Jacqueline as the star of the TV series The 4400 and in an Australian TV series called Bloom. The latter inspired me so much that I decided to turn it into a Shady's Place radio series. Stay tuned! In the last couple of years, I have been binge watching numerous British, Australian and New Zealand produced TV series and movies, and I discovered two more shining stars from down under - Asher Keddie and Antonia Prebble. Both are simply marvelous actresses. In 2021, Asher was in the cast of the highly acclaimed Nicole Kidman miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers, playing a woman depressed over the recent death of her son. Antonia is absolutely amazing as Loretta West in Outrageous Fortune, a series that revolves around a crime family in West Auckland, NZ. A few years after Outrageous Fortune ended, Antonia went on to play Loretta West's grandmother Rita West in the prequel Westside. Antonia has expressed a desire to one day make her mark as an actress here in America. She certainly has the talent for it.
I'm very happy that you enjoyed running through these oldies presented by the celebrity hostesses. That's R&B queen Fontella Bass in the cute outfit you mentioned singing "Rescue Me." The outfit reminds me of one that I have seen Tammi Terrell wearing on an album cover or picture sleeve and perhaps in a video performance as well. The Trammps gave us one of the more soulful disco anthems in "Disco Inferno." The band had a few other excellent disco releases as well, and I will bring them to you in future posts.
Thanks again for coming late and for taking such a thorough look and listen to these offerings, dear friend BB. I wish you a safe and happy week ahead!
More disc jockeys?! How in the world do you remember them all? If this were a radio station you'd have to lay some of them off. But that's the nice thing about a blog, there's much less overhead.
ReplyDeleteI've heard the Hollies "Bus Stop" at least 100 times. But for some reason I paid closer attention to the lyrics the 101st time, and it occurred to me that the little story it's telling would make a good romantic comedy. One drawback, however. Such a movie might be confused with an earlier one with the same title starring Marilyn Monroe (a romantic comedy about an abduction, I not sure it would fly today.)
I have a vague memory of you showing the Regrettes before but can't remember if I liked whatever they sang. No matter. I like the one you played today.
Interesting contrast between the Hollies and Supremes videos. The former in terms of both clothes and setting is mid-1960s Mod, whereas in the latter the three girls are dressed like debutantes and the whole setting is very formal. But I don't think that's live concert footage I'm looking at.
What struck me about the Trampps video was the presence of...musical instruments. Watching 1970s disco acts perform on TV growing up, I'd see the vocalists and only the vocalists. Anything thing else heard was somewhere in the shadows. But here I can see horns! Plenty of horns. If the volume was turned down, and the musicians white, I'd swear it was a Chicago video.
That's all I got.
Hi, Kirk!
DeleteThanks a lot for staying up very late or getting up very early to check out my post and leave a comment, good buddy!
Yes, in 2023 and 2024, I will be adding many new SPMM radio personalities to the roster. Celebrity hosts and hostesses serve multiple purposes. They let you know which TV series and movies I have watched and recommend, which actors and actresses I admire, and allow me to be entertained and amused along with you as I imagine them speaking aloud the intros I write for them. They are, for all intents and purposes, my family. I love and value them all. At the start of every year, as new inductees take their places as full time SPMM DJs, their pictures will appear in my sidebar. By the start of 2024, it will be quite a gallery.
Yes, the irresistibly melodic and optimistic song "Bus Stop" tells an interesting "boy meets girl" story that would work well as a romcom movie.
If you'd like to check out my TWT - TIN post from three months ago in which I introduced The Regrettes, simply follow the link below to riot grrrl greatness. I just read your comments on that post. You shared interesting facts and opinions. I won't be a spoiler. I'll let you read your old comments if you have a mind to:
https://tctgyb.blogspot.com/2020/07/that-was-then-this-is-now-vol-11.html
Yes, The Hollies were performing their hit in Swinging London town and dressed the part. Berry Gordy required The Supremes and other Motown girl groups to dress in evening gowns with the intention of appealing to white folks. In that performance clip taken from an episode of The Steve Allen Show, the trio appears in a simulated (I believe) non-threatening, non-funky, safe for white audiences supper club setting that was no doubt created just for the TV show.
Yes, there's a lot going on in that Trammps video, and you make a good point about a self-contained band being a rarity in the disco genre. KC And The Sunshine Band would be another example. I don't know if The Trammps played their own instruments back when they were known as The Volcanos, but the guys had soul and grit, something that was also a scarce commodity in mainstream disco.
Thanks again for making time for a visit and for your excellent comment, good buddy Kirk. Have a great week!
Asher Keddie has a ton of credits to her name. I've had Nine Perfect Strangers on my list of movies to see ever since I read the book. I'd love to see what part she plays in it.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'll have to check out 9-1-1 for some high-flying excitement.
Thank,
Hi, Cheryl-Lee!
DeleteThanks for checking out this week's post, dear friend.
Yessum, I highly recommend Nine Perfect Strangers. Asher Keddie plays a distraught, depressed wife and mother dealing with the recent loss of her son. The miniseries appealed to me because it reminded me of some of the exercises and challenges I experienced when I was involved as a participant, trainer and therapist in motivational seminar programs in the early and mid 80s.
Asher Keddie and Antonia Prebble are standout actresses in their respective countries. Two of Antonia's series, Outrageous Fortune and its prequel Westside, have won numerous awards between them.
The two 9-1-1 series are fun to watch. They come up with one spectacular rescue scenario after another and the characters are endearing, my two favorites being May and Grace, the women featured in this sneak preview post.
Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend Cheryl-Lee!
