Helen Ettline - Every Dell Rat's Mom

 Shady Dell owner
 Helen Ettline
didn't have any children of her own.
In a way, we were all her kids
 and she was our mom.

 Clearly Helen and John
 loved kids. Why else
 would they have
 put up with the
 aggravation all
 those years?

 The Ettlines believed
 in kids. They enjoyed
 counseling and
 helping kids.

The pictures above and below remind me ever so much of Helen's snack bar
and the jukebox in the adjoining room where rows of diner booths were located.

 To remember and honor
 Helen on Mother's Day,
 I picked three songs
 I think she would enjoy.
 Helen, these are for you.

 FRANK SINATRA
 with THE NUGGETS
 & BIG DAVE'S MUSIC

This record might be the closest Ol' Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra, ever came to R&B.
The song "Two Hearts, Two Kisses (Make One Love)" was first recorded by the
doo-wop group Otis Williams and the Charms, a top 10 hit on the R&B chart
in the spring of 1955. Clean cut crooner Pat Boone covered the song and
brushed the top 15. Here's The Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra,
with his version of "Two Hearts" released in late March, 1955,
backed by The Nuggets, a black doo-wop group signed to
Capitol Records, And Big Dave's Music. Their record
swings but somehow failed to reach the chart.

"Two Hearts, Two Kisses (Make One Love)"
 - Frank Sinatra With The Nuggets And Big Dave's Music
 (March 1955, uncharted)

 JIMMY JONES

To entertain Helen this year, I now present the Birmingham, 'Bama-born
singer Jimmy Jones whose smooth, soulful falsetto drew comparisons to
R&B greats Clyde McPhatter and Sam Cooke. In 1960, Jimmy scored
two major hits in a row with "Handy Man" and "Good Timin'"... but
subsequent releases stalled near the bottom of the chart. Here now
is Jimmy doing his first and biggest hit, a record that went top 3
on the pop chart and on the R&B chart-- "Handy Man!"

 "Handy Man" - Jimmy Jones
 (Feb./Mar. 1960, highest chart pos.
  #2 Hot 100 & Cash Box/#3 R&B
perf. on The Dick Clark {Beechnut} Show)

 SAM COOKE

Finally here's soul/R&B great Sam Cooke who went from singing hymns
in the church choir to recording a string of secular crossover hits.
In the summer of 1961 Sam gained a top 20 hit with "Cupid."
Released in May, the love song might have been a bigger
hit had it been released in January and climbed the
chart in the weeks before Valentine's Day.

 "Cupid" - Sam Cooke
 (June/July 1961, highest chart pos.
 #16 Cash Box/#17 Hot 100/#20 R&B

 Happy Mother's Day, Helen!

We love you and miss you!

    1. Hi, Alex!

You staked your claim to the coveted early bird spot again this week, good buddy! Thanks for coming by to help me serenade Helen Ettline, "The First Lady of the Shady," on Mother's Day. Indeed I do hope she enjoyed the songs I picked for her this year.

Thanks again and have a nice week, good buddy Alex!

  2. Helen is a prime example that you don't have to have children to be mother, a mentor, a friend, and an influence to kids. Many times this day is not a happy one for some women who don't have children of their own. Also it can be sad for those who are missing their Moms today as I'm sure you are. So thanks for the tribute to this lovely lady and I enjoyed the songs featured. I didn't know the Sinatra one but the others I sure did! The Jimmy Jones video made me laugh because of all the gum chewing kiddos who looked about 10yrs old! Did Helen and John allow gum chewing at the Dell? Just a silly question I guess but lots of Moms don't care for it! Anyway, I hope Mrs. Shady has a lovely Mother's Day and a wonderful rest of this weekend. Take care Shady!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks for coming by as once again this year I honor Helen Ettline on Mother's Day! I see that you have a tribute to your own dear mother running and I will be right over to read it. Yessum, I lost my mother 25 years ago and miss her, especially on this special day.

You're right, and you've expressed this in past years. You don't need a direct biological link to be a great mother or father to a young person. You need the stuff Helen and John were made of.

I'm glad you enjoyed the song lineup. That Sinatra recording was new to me, too. I discovered it only a few weeks ago. It swings! I'd have to say it is my new favorite by The Chairman of the Board. Yessum, as more and more YouTubers upload these custom "sync edit" videos, you will be seeing plenty of gum chewing kids in the bleachers of Dick Clark's Saturday Beechnut Show. I wonder if they knew how silly they looked. I never knew of a rule against gum chewing at the Shady Dell. If there was one, I broke it many times. :) Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure Helen sold packs of gum at her snack counter, so there's your answer.

I will pass along your cheery message to Mrs. Shady. Thank you again for your visit and comment and happy Mother's Day to you, dear friend YaYa!

  3. Hello my friend Shady! What a great tribute to Helen. I am sure that she is listening. I was not familiar with the Frank Sinatra song but the other two are ones I remember from my younger days. Happy Mother's Day to the Mrs. Have a great rest of your weekend as well.

    1. Hi, Janet!

How are you, dear friend? Happy Mother's Day and thanks for coming!

It's great to have you over to see my annual Mother's Day tribute post for Shady Dell owner Helen Ettline - "Every Dell Rat's Mom" - and to listen to the three songs I selected in her honor. That Sinatra song is an exciting find. I heard it for the first time only a few weeks ago. I'm glad you remember the two hit songs from your youth.

I will tell Mrs. Shady you sent Mother's Day greetings to her. Thanks again for bringing your Smiles to Shady's Place and have a safe and happy week ahead, dear friend Janet!

  4. Happy Mother's Day, Helen! Thank you for shaping these fine young men and women into the adults they are today. With your help, you've molded them into fine, upstanding citizens. Ah, the lessons of her generation will never be forgotten, especially their caring kindness.

Shady, this was such a beautiful tribute to a wonderful, lovely woman. I love the songs you used and I think they all fit Helen's personality. I'm so glad you keep her memory alive.

Wish Mrs. Shady a Happy Mother's Day for me! All was peaceful today, and I'm going to continue to pray and hope that things settle down and I can stay until I'm ready.

Have a great Sunday evening, dear friend.

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

I found some time to reply to you this evening after all, dear friend. Thanks a lot for this lovely comment!

You're right, Jess. Helen and her husband John, the Mom & Pop of the Shady Dell, had no kids of their own, and yet they shaped lives as a good parent does, helping and guiding countless teenagers who passed through the Dell in its 45 years of operation. Helen & John were a breed apart from most people you see today. They rolled up their sleeves and got involved with troubled teens, walked their talk, and yet were often attacked by well meaning community leaders who feared the Dell was a breeding ground for juvenile delinquents.

I'm glad you liked this year's tribute for Helen including the tuneage I picked. I do believe the three songs fit her personality and that her eyes would have been twinkling as she listened to them.

I will pass along your kind message to Mrs. Shady. I urge you to do everything in your power to preserve peace and tranquility in your household. I am sure your mother will keep fond memories of this special day in her mind and heart for a long time.

Thanks again for dropping in and have a safe and happy week, dear friend JM!

    2. Hi Shady,

I'm glad the Dell was never shut down and that both Helen and John continued to help mold teenagers for many, many, many years. When did the Dell eventually close and what led to it?

Oh, I will. Both are bored and I think anxiety is high. Dad will be retiring, but hopes to get another job. Mom is anxious about that, but she's also worried about her job. Alcohol and anxiety don't mix, dad when drinking is talking about protesting and hurting others if they prevent him from voting for Trump. Mom, if she is let go, Delaware it is! They watch Fox, which is bad to begin with and unfortunately, I think it's leading to this paranoia. I can't say anything, so I just walk away. Eventually they get tired and go to bed. I'm very disappointed in my dad... never thought he would get this way.

I think one day I will create my own Shady Dell and help teens and young adults who are experiencing my type of situation, but not only those types, but everyone who just needs a place to feel loved and belonging.

Have a great Monday, dear friend!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

The Shady Dell operated from 1945 until it closed in the fall of 1991, a little over a year before John's death. Over the decades it evolved from a bakery and ice cream parlor to a full service restaurant, then downsized to a snack bar. The dance hall, housed in a separate building, was built circa 1959-60. The Dell closed because John became elderly and was in poor health and because the teenage patrons became rowdy and didn't respect or obey John.

Alcohol doesn't mix with much of anything, in my opinion. That's why I gave it up completely nearly 28 years ago. I'm sorry your folks depend of Fox News for the truth. All they will get from that source is a very biased brainwashing intended to spread fear, hatred and intolerance.

I doubt that the Shady Dell could exist in today's world, especially now that we are dealing with the ongoing threat of this mysterious virus. The best way for us to proceed is to connect on the internet and hold virtual dance parties like we do on the blog circuit. Everyone is welcome here as long as they show respect, same as it was at the original Dell.

Thanks again for dropping by, dear friend JM. Hang in there and let's hope for better days ahead.

    1. Hi, Joey!

It's great to have you over, good buddy. Thanks for dropping in!

I'm glad you like the satin smooth voice of Sam Cooke singing "Cupid," a song I think should have been released in January to tie in with Valentine's Day. Sam's murder was yet another huge loss for the music world.

Thanks again for coming over to help me salute Helen, good buddy Joey!

Thank you for being on hand for Helen Ettline's Mother's Day tribute again this year, dear friend!

I would like to think Helen is smiling down on us with that familiar twinkle in her eye as we salute "Every Dell Rat's Mom."

Yessum, Mrs. Shady celebrated Mother's Day which came only a few days after her birthday. Thank you again for taking a break from your hiatus and paying respects to Helen Ettline. Enjoy your time off and stay well, dear friend Cathy!

  7. My real mother complained that I spent more time at the Dell than at home. I prefer the Charms version. Did Helen like Sinatra? I can not remember. I liked the other two songs and would sure like to own that TR3 in the Jimmie Jones picture. Stay Safe. Jerre

    1. Hi, Jerre!

It's great to see you, good buddy! Thanks for dropping in for this year's Mother's Day salute to Helen Ettline - "The Mother of All Dell Rats" aka "Every Dell Rat's Mom."

Thanks for sharing that your real mother complained about the amount of time you spent at the Den of Iniquity. (That's what my aunt called it.) It's funny how the disparaging remarks about the Dell always came from people who never actually set foot inside the place. They got their impressions of it through the rumor mill.

I really like the song "Two Hearts" and that's why I have used it before. I posted the original by The Charms followed by the cover I mentioned by Pat Boone back in the summer of 2014:

      https://shadydell.blogspot.com/2014/08/duel-in-shady-weapons-45s-how-west-was.html

I have no direct knowledge that Helen liked Sinatra. I think "Somethin' Stupid" showed up on the jukebox in the dance hall when the record was popular, but I don't remember hearing any Sinatra oldies played in Helen's snack bar jukebox. For these tributes I merely pick songs that I think she would like. Thanks for identifying the car in the background on the Jimmy Jones number. Another friend just asked me earlier today if I know what kind of car it is. I didn't know what to tell her but now I do. I was wondering why the car was used as a prop in the background for that particular song, and then I speculated that maybe it remained there throughout the show, featured as the grand prize in a contest being run at the time on Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beechnut Show.

It's good to know you're still out there, Jerre. Many thanks for coming by and helping me remember Helen on Mom's Day. Stick around, because late next month YOU - Jerre Slaybaugh - are the special guest as Dell Rat Debbie presents another edition of her series Top Hit Club of America. Stay healthy and come back again soon, good buddy Jerre!

I'm going to start calling you "Old Faithful," dear friend! :) Thanks for doing double duty again this time. I'm glad you didn't miss my annual Mother's Day tribute to Helen Ettline.

I agree, BB. There's every reason to believe that Helen and John, through their influence and guidance and by being good listeners w/o judging, saved some young lives.

I'm glad you enjoyed my selection of songs to honor Helen for Mom's Day. Take care of yourself and thanks again for stopping by, dear friend BB!
