Can't You Hear, Can't You Hear the Thunder?
Jessica M. Comes From a Land Down Under!

3 THINGS I LOVE
ABOUT AUSTRALIA:

NAOMI WATTS

NICOLE KIDMAN

JESSICA MAUBOY

I'm sure you know the first two ladies, but might not have heard of the third.
Australia born and raised Jessica Mauboy, also an actress, is better known
as a recording artist. I discovered Jessica a few years ago while doing
research for my year long series on modern dance-pop. I like so many
of Jessica's recordings that I was inspired to devote an entire post to her.

Released in 2008,
Jessica Mauboy's
debut studio album
Been Waiting was the
second highest selling
Australian album of 2009.
Been Waiting yielded
"Burn," Jessica's first
#1 charting hit single.

"Burn" - Jessica Mauboy
(Dec. 2008, highest
chart pos. #1 Aus,
from Nov. 2008
album Been Waiting)

Along with singing and acting, Jessica is known for her good girl image
and philanthropy. Her father is Indonesian and her mother is Indigenous
Australian. Jessica is considered a role model for young women and for
Australia's Indigenous population. In 2011 Jess teamed up with British
R&B artist Jay Sean on "What Happened To Us," the third single
from Jessica's second studio album Get 'Em Girls.

"What Happened To Us" - Jessica Mauboy ft. Jay Sean
(Mar. 2011, highest chart pos. #14 Australia,
from Nov. 2010 album Get 'Em Girls)

In the fall of 2013 Jessica released her third studio album Beautiful.

The lead single, an up tempo dance-pop number entitled
"To the End of the Earth," co-written by Jess along with
three other song scribes, brushed the Aussie top 20.

"To the End of the Earth" - Jessica Mauboy
(July/Aug. 2013,  highest chart pos. #21 Australia,
from Oct. 2013 album Beautiful)

"Pop a Bottle (Fill Me Up)," another song from Beautiful, rocketed to #2
in Australia, becoming Jessica's highest charting single since "Burn" in 2008.

With such a suggestive title and lyrics that include:

I don't want to wait until the weekend comes
just so I can pop a bottle of your love
take another shot I never get enough
come on and fill me up fill me up

...you can imagine what you'd see in a video made by certain other rappers
and hip hoppers we could name. Curiously, Jessica was criticized by some
people for keeping this and her other vids PG-rated. Have a look.

"Pop a Bottle (Fill Me Up)" - Jessica Mauboy
(Sept. 2013, highest chart pos. #2 Australia,
from Oct. 2013 album Beautiful)

One reviewer described the Beautiful album's title song as "the perfect Summer
club track." Another called it "an addictive track that is bound to be stuck in
your head for days on end." I can testify to that because I have awakened
some mornings with the song playing on repeat in my noggin. If I had to
pick one word to sum up this song it would be...hmmm... "Beautiful."

"Beautiful" - Jessica Mauboy
(Nov. 2013, highest chart pos. #46 Australia,
from October 2013 album Beautiful)

A year after its release, Jessica's Beautiful album was re-released as a
Platinum edition containing five additional songs including her eighth
top 10 single "Can I Get a Moment?" The zesty song and music video
were inspired by artists that influenced Jessica including Beyoncé,
Mariah Carey and the R&B divas of the classic Motown era.

"Can I Get a Moment?" - Jessica Mauboy
(Oct./Nov. 2014, highest chart pos. #5 Australia,
from Nov. 2014 Platinum edition of Beautiful)

"Can I Get a Moment?"

"Can I Get a Witness?"

Can we agree that Jess is a

real ragin' roo of a ripper?

Can't you hear the thunder

from this girl down under?

An exciting singer and an excellent role model
for young people, Jessica Mauboy joins Naomi Watts
and Nicole Kidman on my list of Australia's best exports.

Have a Shady day!

  1. Not my kind of music, but the first song was catchy and I can see why she's so popular. Did not know she was Australian though.

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for being the early bird again this week, good buddy!

I know that modern dance pop isn't your bag, but I appreciate you sampling the songs of Aussie songstress Jessica Mauboy, one of my most exciting music discoveries in recent years. I'm glad you like her first hit "Burn."

Thanks again for dropping by, good buddy Alex!

  2. She is sure selling herself in every way, hmmm?, friend Shady. Anyway … glad you r still standing. So am I … smiles … after a few glorious days off, 2morrow am back working for quite a long stretch. And in other news, snow is almost gone and I found a lil patch of new grass for Theo … smiles … Love, cat. https://www.youtube.com/embed/glSRYnNaCoc?rel=0&controls=0&showinfo=0

    1. Hi, cat!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks for dropping in to check out my tribute to Australian zinger Jessica Mauboy!

Yessum, Jessica sells herself in her videos, but that's the name of the game in pop music. She performs in a manner that has earned her praise for setting a good example for other young indigenous Australians.

I'm happy to know that you remain AOK, in good health, and that you didn't need to wait until mid July for the snow to melt in Alberta. Fortunately your link worked this time and I was able to watch the latest in The Adventures of Theo Thunderbutt. I didn't know cats like to eat grass. He really gobbled it up, and it was great to hear you giggling as you recorded him.

Thanks again for coming down to say hello, dear friend cat. Take care of yourself through the long block of work days you have coming up. I hope to see you again soon!

  3. Thanks for introducing us to Jessica. She has a good voice. Not entirely sure where the good girl image fits in, but perhaps next to others, she is a good girl. :)

    1. Hi, Sherry!

Thanks for coming by, dear friend!

Yessum, everything is relative, and in the sexy world of dance pop, Jessica Mauboy is considered to be on the good girl side of the spectrum. The lyrics to some of her songs might raise eyebrows, but her videos are definitely rated PG-13. Check out the song lyrics and videos of Nicki Minaj for the sake of comparison.

I hope your week is going well, Sherry. Thanks again for taking a look and a listen. Stay safe and well up there in Georgia, dear friend!

  4. Well, I listened to every piece and she has a nice voice but this is not my favourite cup of tea although I don't mind the last one which sounds a bit more unique from the other ones. She is beautiful and talented and glad she is a role model. These 2 pics of Naomi and Nicole is when they had more meat on their bones and they look better with some meat. Have a beautiful day!

    1. Hi, Birgit!

How're you doing, dear friend? Thanks for taking a peek at the post!

Hey, first of all, I totally agree with you about Naomi and Nicole. They certainly did look better and healthier in those younger years when they had a little more meat on their bones. If you haven't watched it yet, you should check out Naomi's recent one season TV series Gypsy. The title theme song is the big Stevie Nicks - Fleetwood Mac hit.

Okay, now on to your review of my featured artist Jessica Mauboy. When I ran my year long dance pop series in 2016, I found out (the hard way) how few of my readers appreciate the genre. That's AOK. I enjoy listening to artists like Jessica once in a while and I think she's terrific. I have two of her CDs and love everything she sings. Blogging with integrity means posting material that you like, not what you hope others will like. I've been doing it this way for almost a dozen years now. I'm glad we can agree on her voice, her looks and her talent plus the consensus that she is a positive role model for young women.

Thanks again for coming down, dear friend BB. Take care and and I'll be seeing you soon!

    1. Hey, John!

Thanks for stopping by, good buddy! I am always happy to see you. I'm pleased that you appreciate Australian artist Jessica Mauboy's beauty and talent. I stumbled upon her a few years ago and composed the draft of this post way back then. Since I haven't run very much modern pop so far this year, I decided to plug her into the lineup.

Thanks again for coming by, good buddy John. Stay safe and well!

  6. Hey there friend Shady, what a great showcase of a new to me singer. I'm not sure I'd run out and buy some of her music but they have a beat I could dance around my studio to. You can't tell her accent in her singing, although I heard a little when she spoke in "Pop a Bottle." I appreciate that while her lyrics may be suggestive, her videos are not over the top. I hate that. Have a marvelous rest of your day, Shady.

    1. Hi, Janet!

Thanks for dance-popping over, dear friend! :)

Knowing that you prefer singer/songwriter rock, I didn't expect you to be wild enough about Jessica Mauboy's lighthearted pop style to buy her albums or fly to Australia to catch a show. Nevertheless I'm glad her tunes got your toes tapping and inspired you to dance around your home studio. Jessica's songs are a good kind of infectious, in my opinion. If you give them two or three listens, chances are you will find yourself singing them, humming them or playing them in your noggin. At least that has been my experience. As I told Birgit (above) I own a couple of Jessica's CDs and listen to them whenever I'm in the mood for some nicely produced modern female pop. Yessum, some of the lyrics Jess sings are double entendre and risqué, especially in "Pop The Bottle." To her credit, though, she keeps it clean in her conceptual videos.

It was my pleasure to introduce you to this talented young singer from the land down under. Thank you again for visiting and for leaving a splendid comment, dear friend Janet!

    1. Hi, Kelly!

I am delighted to see you, dear friend. Thanks for swinging over for a visit!

I'm thrilled that you appreciate what Jessica Mauboy has to offer. I agree that she is a beautiful woman - a mix of Indonesian and indigenous Australian - and gifted with a powerful yet smooth singing voice, genuine enthusiasm, a pleasing personality and a winning smile - all qualities I admire in a performer. I'm glad you enjoyed meeting this artist who is apparently little known and seldom heard here in the states.

Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Kelly, and have a happy and healthy week!

Thanks again for joining the fun, dear friend Cheryl-Lee!

    1. Hi, cat!

Welcome back in, dear friend! Please don't apologize for coming to see me. I enjoy your visits.

You're right. That video of Tiny Tim (the one from English literature) ringing the transport company is hilarious! I needed to share it with Mrs. Shady and others before writing my reply. You really did brighten my day, dear cat, and I hope your first day back to work at the saw mill is going well. Thanks again for coming by! :)

  10. Although I put Hugh Jackman as a fav Aussie export I can see the reason this little gal has star quality. She's beautiful and like you said she does a more G-rated image than many singers and videos these days. However, the lyrics might be a bit more PG-13 or above. But it's great that she sticks to her guns and also gives back to society. I'm not too crazy about some of the songs but I did like "Beautiful" the best. I wish her lots of continued luck and being a good role model for kids! I hope all's well with you and Mrs. Shady. Take care!

    1. Hi, Yaya!

It's great to see you, dear friend! Thanks for having a look and a listen as Shady presents the songs and videos of Australian dance pop singer Jessica Mauboy.

Although you aren't keen on Jessica's style of music, I'm glad you admire her for being a role model for young people and for her philanthropy. I'm happy to know you liked the song "Beautiful." I play that one in my noggin all the time.

All's well down here in Florida, and I hope the same can be said for you guys in Ohio. Take care, have a good week, and thank you again for dropping by, dear friend YaYa!

  11. At first I thought your blog was calling me, dear friend! LOL. :D However, a pleasant surprise was waiting for me and I agree, she is a rippin' and ragin' roo from down under. It's a pity that we have never heard of her in the States. Her voice and songs are pure.

I'm familiar with Jay Sean and I'm not a big fan of him, but I really like him in "What Happened To Us." His vocals are amazing, maybe Miss Jessica brings out the best in him. I'm not really a fan of the subjects he raps about.

Thanks for sharing these gems with us, Shady. I like every song on here, but Beautiful is my absolute favourite. This is good skating music! :D

Have a great Friyay, dear friend! Great way to groove into the weekend!

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for popping over to sample the sights and sounds of Jessica Mauboy, dear friend! Yessum, when you saw "Jessica M" in the title of my post, I was betting that you thought it might be about you. :)

I like how you describe Jessica's vocals and songs as "pure." I totally agree. Jessica Mauboy proves that you can keep it relatively clean and yet deliver the goods in the modern R&B and dance-pop categories. I'm glad you enjoyed her collaboration with Jay even though the British R&B rapper isn't one of your faves. I'm glad you agree with me and others that "Beautiful" is just plain beautiful, and would make a great song to skate to.

Happy Friyay to you as well, dear friend JM. Thank you again for joining the fun and have a safe and happy weekend!

    2. Hi Shady,

It's refreshing to hear something so pure. I'm going to look up the rest of her catalog and see what I can find. She may start filling my day in quarantine. 😃

There was an explosion last night. Parents are bored. Dad and I got into a fight and mom said, "next month we are going to go over your finances so you can get your own place, make sure you're self sufficient and don't bug us." I don't believe her and frankly I want to save for NYC or Toronto when I'm ready. I think she does this for control and to start a fight.

Dad was supposed to call his hair person to do my undercut and he didn't. Mom said if I was more self sufficient. Ma'am, nothing is opened. Still don't believe her. It's just frustrating.

This weekend I'm staying away from them and working on some projects. Maybe Mother's Day will be nicer.

Have a great Saturday, dear friend!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

These Jessica Mauboy songs/videos are essentially "oldies" by this time because I produced this post at least four years ago and never got around to pubbing it until now. Maybe you can find some of her more recent stuff online and listen to it.

I'm sorry there was an explosion of tempers at your house last night. This is bound to be happening more and more in households all across the country as people get sick and tired of being cooped up, especially with warmer weather arriving in the north. Try to find a private spot in the house and do your thing. I believe everyone will be on their best behavior tomorrow for Mother's Day.

Thanks for coming over, dear friend JM, and enjoy the rest of your Saturday!

    4. Hi Shady,

Today was 40 degrees and much better moods. I like being in the house, but I'm finding private time in my room. 😃

I'll definitely check out to see if Jessica Mauboy has any new tracks. Hopefully!

Have a great evening, dear friend.

Don't forget those healthful solo nature walks you love to take. They are an excellent low risk way for you to adjust your mood. Let me know if you find any new Jessica Mauboy songs that you like.

Happy Mother's Day, dear friend JM!

Thanks for the introduction of Jessica Mauboy. I enjoyed sampling her mewsic this morning. Nicole Kidman I knew was from Australia but I wasn't aware that this is also Naomi Watt's home country. Did you know Naomi is in the new Twin Peaks? Have a great week, my friend. Take care and be well!
