"(Gotta Get Some Action) Now!" - The Camtwisters
(from 2010 album Dancing On Your Graves -
Rockabilly Tribute to The Hellacopters)

Bad to the bone - that was the Swedish rockabilly band The Camtwisters
kicking off our first show with their 2010 cover of "(Gotta Get Some
Action) Now!," a song originally recorded and released in 1996
by the Swedish garage band The Hellacopters.

Hi again, we're the Gecko Brothers, Seth and Richie, stars of the
horror TV show From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. I'm Seth Gecko
(below left) - cool, suave, macho... the brains of the operation.

And I'm Richie Gecko (above right) - violent, psychotic,
unpredictable, a loose cannon and proud of it. Somebody
shot a hole in my soul... (and in my hand).

We've got nothing to lose and there's a good chance
I'll kill you, but don't worry, it's nothing personal,
just something a certain sexy vampire goddess
might tell me to do. Her wish is my command.

Richie and I got each other's back. It's how we roll.
I look out for him and he looks out for me. Got it?
We're the hunters and the hunted. The FBI and the
Texas Rangers are on our tails, and we're on a
mission to find and wipe out a colony of Mexican
vampires - good clean fun. We're jazzed to have
you with us for the first edition of our S-P-M-M
radio program Nothing to Lose. If you're ready,
and even if you're not, we're gonna take you
hostage on a musical journey to the dark and
dangerous world of bad boy rock 'n' roll, rockabilly,
retrobilly, psychobilly, sleazabilly, hillbilly, killbilly,
black hat psychedelic outlaw cowboy, bebop, blues,
boogie, hot rod, swing, jitterbug jive, roots rock,
jump blues, gnarly surf rock and old school punk.
Did I leave anything out? Best of the old and new!

My brother and I are gonna Butch and Sundance our way through this
seven song play list and come out the other side smellin' like roses.
By the time we're done, you won't even know what hit you.
Brace yourself... the Gecko brothers are back!

Are you ready,
Richie?

I was born ready.

Got your balls on?

Screwed on tight.

Okay, let's do this!

Here's some rough stuff from the Swiss rockabilly band Hillbilly Moon Explosion.
Dig this down and dirty duet with HME's lead zinger Emanuela Hutter joined by
Mark "Sparky" Phillips from the UK psychobilly band Demented Are Go. It's
a cool cut from their 2019 album of The Sparky SessionsLove Songs and
Murder Ballads. Emanuela and Sparky invade your ears, eyes and mind
with their bold 'n' brazen, rude 'n' crude cover of-- "Jackson!"

That was "Jackson" sounding badder than ever thanks
to the Zurich-based band Hillbilly Moon Explosion
and featured guest artist Sparky Phillips from the
UK band Demented Are Go. "Jackson" was co-
written by West Virginia country and folk artist
Billy Edd Wheeler along with Brill building vet
Jerry Leiber and first recorded by Wheeler in 1965.
In '67 it was a pop and easy listening hit for Nancy
Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood and was a big hit on
the country chart for Johnny Cash & June Carter.

I'd fight for a "Boogie Woogie Country Girl" if she

American rock & roll and rockabilly alive.

Robertson who joined The Hawks road crew and went on
to become the virtuoso lead guitarist for the band.

  1. Hey Tom,

Cool music set! I got a real kick out of the "Boogie Woogie Country Girl" music video. I loved the vintage flare. That gal could be an Elvgren pinup girl model. :) "Hey Boba Lou" came out the year DH was born. I think I've heard this one before but it's been a long time. Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks were great. "The Wanderer" released the same month/year I was born. This one I definitely remember as it's another oldie that got a lot of play time in the mid to late 60s. From Dusk to Dawn was a great TV series. I hated that it came to an end. A lot of our favorite series are doing that, too. What a bummer! I enjoyed today's music. Thanks for sharing and for visiting this my place this morning, my friend. Have a boogietastic week!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

I read your previous comment and again thank you very much for the kind words and your continued support.

It seems you found a few things to like about The Gecko Brothers' first official post as Shady Bunch deejays. The girl in the video for "Boogie Woogie Country Girl" is actress and model Amber Heard, formerly Mrs. Johnny Depp. That footage is from Amber's role as the "Guess Girl" in a fall 2011 advertising campaign for Guess Jeans. I was excited about Amber's starring role as a Playboy bunny in the period drama TV series The Playboy Club which also aired in the fall of 2011 on NBC. However the show was canceled after only three episodes had been broadcast.

I'm glad you liked the old school sounds of "Hey Boba Lou" by Ronnie Hawkins and "The Wanderer" by Dion at his swaggering best. I'm happy you agree that From Dusk Till Dawn ended too soon. Madison Davenport went on to star in another edgy TV series I loved entitled Reprisal, but it was scrapped after only one season. Seems not enough people share our taste in TV shows.

Thanks again for doing double duty and commenting on both posts. Have a wonderful week, dear friend Cathy!

  2. Some great music to listen to here. The first one was quite good and a sexy take on the Johnny Cash one. The lead male singer looks like a vampire. Love listening to the others and seeing an homage to the Monroe film, "Bus Stop". The one guy sounds like Chris Isaac but what is with not showing his face? He liked taking the mop and making a mask. Loved seeing the classic cars and the gals who love the 50s look which went so well with the song.I really liked Hey Boba Lou and am not sure I ever heard it before. I have not seen this tv show and the movie...it is one Tarantino film I hated. The Tarantino character was gross and he went all out with his foot fetish in this film. Yuck.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for coming over quickly to take the Early Bird runner-up spot, dear friend!

I'm pleased that you singled out the edgy Swiss rockabilly band Hillbilly Moon Explosion. How about the name of that album - The Sparky Sessions - Love Songs and Murder Ballads? I wouldn't want to meet "Sparky" in a dark alley, would you? :) The more I listen to their rough rendition of "Jackson," the more I like it, including the unique setting of the video in a bowling alley.

Yessum, that's model and actress Amber Heard who had an acrimonious break-up and divorce from Johnny Depp, looking a lot like Marilyn Monroe in that 2011 ad campaign for Guess Jeans.

I think lonesome cowboy Orville Peck was trying to add to the mystery and bizarre quality of his music video with that weird face cover. My impression of his vocal style and the song itself is that they were influenced by Roy Orbison. I characterize the filming and editing style of the video as "David Lynch meets Russ Meyer," because there are images and techniques throughout that are very similar to the ones found in the productions of those two famous directors. Both are favorites of mine.

Yessum, in that "Wanderer" video, we have a chance to see the retro rock & roll and rockabilly culture, lifestyle and clothing styles of that modern movement as hundreds gathered for the Viva Lost Wages Rockabilly Weekend Car Show.

I predict that you would like the FDTD television series a lot more than the film. The two dynamic young actors who play the Geckos are dynamite in their respective roles, and the supporting cast is great too, with "Fez" from That 70's Show (Wilmer Valderrama) playing a Mexican vampire, and his friend and lover, singer Demi Lovato also in the cast at one point. Then there's stand-out young actress Madison Davenport who is developing into a formidable femme fatale type, along with tough guy Danny Trejo from Breaking Bad. You should give the series a try!

Thanks again for your kind visit and great comment, dear friend BB. Have a wonderful week!

  3. Hi Shady and friends. You certainly have a talent for finding the most eclectic group of singers and TV shows around. I've never heard of the Gecko brothers but I think I know their cousin...you know, the one who sells insurance? But don't get me wrong I do love a Vampire story. This would have been a good post for Halloween too! I do love Halloween. Anyway, the songs were ones I didn't know but I really like a few of them. Namely, The Hillbilly Moon explosion. That guy was kind of creepy looking but that voice just killed me! It was one of those sounds that you just had to listen too. Sort of like seeing an accident and just having to look. Anyway I also like the country girl one. Very retro! The dude with the mask? Orville Peck. He was seriously creepy! But a good voice none the less. So on this last Monday in July I bid you bye bye and hopes for a good week! Shady, you always make me smile with your posts!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thanks for making it over early this week, dear friend! Seth and Richie say "howdy." :)

LOL - I'm afraid these bad hombres, The Gecko Brothers, are not even loosely related to Martin, the cute, friendly little spokeslizard mascot of GEICO insurance. :)

Yessum, I could have saved this post for Halloween, and I probably will do that in future installments of the series. This year, I am already overloaded with H-ween posts, and that's why I moved this one up earlier in the year. If you think about it, H-ween isn't that far off, so better get out those decorations at The Pines!

Sparky Phillips is one tough looking customer, isn't he? I love the name of his band Demented Are Go. As I've told others, the country girl video uses footage of actress/model Amber Heard (formerly Mrs. Johnny Depp and the star of the NBC series The Playboy Club), in her 2011 ad campaign shoot for Guess Jeans. Yessum, Orville Peck's look and the look of his entire video are deliberately creepy. I selected it because I like that sort of thing and because it goes well with the outlaw and vampire theme of this new S-P-M-M radio show which was inspired by From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, a TV fantasy action drama that I highly recommend. Yessum, if you don't look at the visuals and simply listen to the song, you'll find Orville's recording sounding a lot like vintage Roy Orbison.

I'm thrilled that you found some things to like in this dark and dangerous post, but then again I know that H-ween is your favorite holiday and you are not the least bit squeamish. Have a super week and thank you again, very much, for your visit and great comment, dear friend YaYa!

  4. Y'know, a buddy of mine recommended From Dusk Till Dawn, so my ex and I watched it. She fell asleep just as it all broke loose, and the next morning said she didn't see where it was so good. Loved that first selection, even though I stupidly hit the comment button and cut off the last few seconds. That Jackson cover was... different, lol! Hypnotics were pretty good. With rockabilly, I'm kinda spoiled from the two tremendous local bands we used to have around here, Red Ball Jets and Blue Moon Boys. Mu son (with 2 kids of his own now) was 8 or 9 the year they had the big "Edge Fest" in Ft Wayne, and asked if he could go up a little closer to the band. I said, sure. Ten seconds later, the lead singer says, "Better be careful, little man," and I told my daughter, who was 5, let's go save your brother. Sure enough, they were moshing in front of the stage and he was on the edge, not giving an inch! Good times.

Yes, as usual, I'm stopping by to give you a heads up on current future events. I'm shutting down the Time Machine at 700 episodes, likely with the Great Halloween Bash upcoming. The last couple of months, in honor of this, I've pretty much left the show do itself, which means I've had 'guests' ranging from Former ball player Kirby Puckett to Chef Aaron May, to a recent three-week stretch in which I couldn't get rid of Toni Tennille... Between the lack of desire to spend the three typing hours every week and the 5 10-hour day schedule we've been on since returning from that lovely covid break, I just saw that big ol' 700th up ahead and said that's as good a time as any.

So figure on a closing Halloween bash, and prolly the odd Christmas party or two. I'm thinking, Lord willing, Christmas will still see one last beauty contest... Tennille's been lobbying the crap outta me and I suppose I better give Misty a chance to pick her.

Hope you are doing well! One more doff of the hat to the inspiration you've been over here!

    1. Hey, Chris!

I'm excited to see you, good buddy! Thanks a lot for dropping in to experience volume 1 of my new radio series based on From Dusk Till Dawn featuring those lovable bad boys who are breaking even badder, the Gecko Bros. - Seth & Richie. It's not clear to me if your first anecdote referred to watching the original film or the TV series. If you haven't watched the TV show, I highly recommend it. "Fez" from That 70's Show plays a completely badass vampire - not to be missed, and Tilting at Windmills Beauty Contest nominee Demi Lovato also plays a role in the series.

Thanks for sharing the stories about your local rockabilly bands and taking your kids to the "Edge Fest." Sounds like your region has a large and enthusiastic rockabilly fan base.

I will mark my calendar and try to be there for your final installment of the Time Machine around Halloween. I think it would be nice to have one last Beauty Contest in Scrappy's memory and with Misty picking the wiener. Will this be the year that Granny Clampett finally wins the coveted crown? I will Shirley stay tuned to find out.

I'm always happy to entertain friends, Chris, and that includes you. Stay well, good buddy, and thanks again for thinking about me and stopping by. Enjoy the rest of your week and I hope to see you around H-ween!

  5. Hi Seth and Richie. Nice job coming up with this mix of Rockabilly tunes! "Gotta Get Some Action" is a great one...everything about this song is good! Bad to the bone is right! "Hillybilly Moon Explosion" is a corny one, but the instrumentals and sax players was great...a fun video, actually!

Good job, Johnny Meeks on "Say Mama"! They pulled it off on recreating this 50's hit, and love the piano solo! If Micke played piano on "Boogie Woogie Country Girl", my hat's off to him! What a treat! Great cover!

It is refreshing to hear something from my heartthrob Dion. "Wanderer" is one of my favorites of his! Hey guys, great job finding a video showcasing classic cars and retro fashions.

I'm afraid the Orville Peck song, "Dead of Night" is a bit creepy. The song itself is okay without the video.

This is quite a different post from usual, and I am always up for seeing and hearing new artists. Thank you for your hard work, I enjoyed it.

Take care dear friend, Shady! We have a heat index of 106 degrees right now, and I'm staying in!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for coming over to meet the bad boys of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series (a TV show Mrs. S and I highly recommend) as they try their luck as S-P-M-M deejays. After all, they've got Nothing To Lose! :)

I'm glad somebody finally mentioned "Say Mama" by Johnny Meeks and his band The Hypnotics. It's actually my Pick To Click, a great recording that harks back to the pioneering 50s rock & roll sound of Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps, a group Meeks played in along with The Champs, the band that topped the pop and R&B charts in 1958 with the Mexican-flavored, "dirty sax" driven "Tequila," one of the biggest instrumental hits of all time.

Yessum, I was thrilled to find that video focusing on the vintage cars and costumed women attending the rockabilly festival in Las Vegas, brought to life thru the remastered sound of Dion's swaggering smash hit "The Wanderer."

Yessum, The Gecko Brothers will offer a different type of radio show, one that takes you on a walk on the wild side into the darker and bolder styles of rockabilly and rock & roll. The genres they cover have millions of fans around the world, as evidenced by the Swiss, Swedish and UK acts featured here in volume 1. Creepy is all part of the act and a major part of the fun.

I'm sorry you are sweltering over there. We are getting daily doses of cooling rain and the lawns and shrubs are looking good. I hope you and Scootie are well and in good spirits. Thank you again for dropping in. Join me if you can for my next post which begins Sunday. Lawyers Jimmy, Patty & Kim will lay down the law and tackle another tough case in their musical series PLan B (Soft). Until then, enjoy the rest of your week and have a great weekend, dear friend Suzanne!

    1. Hi, Mary!

Thanks for coming over to join the fun, dear friend! I'm glad you enjoyed Nothing To Lose, the new SPMM radio show hosted by Seth & Richie Gecko of From Dusk Till Dawn. Take it from Don Johnson - you don't wanna get in their way. Every person I've discussed this TV series with who has also seen the movie agrees with us that the TV show was better. If you liked Madison Davenport's good girl breaking bad transformation in From Dusk Till Dawn, you should also check out her role as a burlesque dancer in a rowdy biker bar in Reprisal, the short-lived TV series that she starred in after her stint with from Dusk Till Dawn. Of course, it was also a hoot to see "Fez" from That 70's Show playing a badass vampire in FDTD, and exciting to see his girlfriend at the time, pop singer Demi Lovato, taking a recurring role in the series as well.

I'm so pleased that the horror theme of this new radio series resonates with you, and I hope you enjoyed discovering some dark and dangerous rock & roll and rockabilly tunes performed by artists in Europe and here at home.

Thanks again for swinging by, dear friend Mary, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  7. I've seen and enjoyed the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino movie, though it struck me more as a violent action movie than a horror film, despite the presence of vampires. I didn't know there was a TV show.

I have to say this set of songs, save Dion's, are new to me. I guess my favorite is "Boogie Woogie Country Girl". I'm not always good at identifying musical instruments in recordings, but I know a piano when I hear one! What's that called anyway when someone slides their fingers across the keys? It must be called SOMETHING, I just don't know what! As for the accompanying visuals, skimming through you comments someone mentioned the Marilyn Monroe movie Bus Stop, but I'm more reminded of her final film The Misfits, though Amber Heard doesn't quite come across as the emotionally vulnerable sexpot that was MM's forte. She's too in control of the situation, kind of femme fatalish, like Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice (which, after all, also took place in the American Southwest) so that cowboy better watch out!

"Jackson" gets an honorable mention, if only for that one fella's oddball voice. So that's what happened when Froggy from Our Gang grew up. He moved to Sweden and became a rockabilly singer!

I would have sounded better if Roy Orbison hadn't just provided the "sound" but also the vocals, but I'll settle for Orville Peck. Not just the song but it's a great video, itself kind of Southwestern film noirish (and kinky to boot.)

    That's all I got, pardner.

    2. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for staying up late to leave such a great comment, good buddy. In fact, you left TWO comments, thereby making my blog and this post seem more popular than they actually are. What more could I ask? :)

I looked it up in my Funk & Wagnalls. There actually is a word used in music to describe the technique of sliding the fingers across the piano keys. It's called "wowthatswaycool." No, it's actually called a glissando.

Wiki sez: << In music, a glissando is a glide from one pitch to another. It is an Italianized musical term derived from the French glisser, "to glide". In some contexts, it is distinguished from the continuous portamento. Some colloquial equivalents are slide, sweep (referring to the "discrete glissando" effects on guitar and harp, respectively), bend, smear, rip (for a loud, violent gliss to the beginning of a note), lip (in jazz terminology, when executed by changing one's embouchure on a wind instrument), plop, or falling hail (a glissando on a harp using the back of the fingernails.Discrete glissando. >>

<< On some instruments (e.g., piano, harp, xylophone), discrete tones are clearly audible when sliding. For example, on a keyboard, a player's fingernails can be made to slide across the white keys or over the black keys, producing either a C major scale or an F♯ major pentatonic scale, or their relative modes; by performing both at once, it is possible to produce a full chromatic scale. Pianists can also complete a glissando of two pitches an octave apart. Maurice Ravel used glissandi in many of his piano compositions, and "Alborada del Gracioso" contains notable piano glissando passages in thirds executed by the right hand. Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Liszt and Gershwin have all used glissandi for piano in notable compositions. >>

TMI??? That's all I got on the subject.

You might be right that Amber Heard's scenes for that Guess Jeans ad campaign were intended to reference the Marilyn Monroe - Clark Gable film The Misfits rather than Bus Stop. Frankly, my dear -- I don't give a damn, because Amber made the mistake of marrying Johnny Depp when she could have had Shady! By the way, I think Marilyn Manson would have worked well as a Guess Jeans model.

Sparky Phillips says howdy and thanks you for the compliment. In the genre called of psychobilly, to which his UK band Demented Are Go belongs, rough stuff is the rule, and that includes a gravel voice and menacing appearance.

Oh shucks... I've run out of space before replying to your second comment. I will need to use a second box, thereby beefing up my embarrassingly low comment total. BRB.

Thanks for linking to that article about John Waters and Orville Peck, good buddy! I get the feeling that wasn't Waters' first rodeo.

      (BA-DUM-BUMP)

I can easily see how Western wear and gear, cowboy films, Western TV series and country & western style music can excite gay-leaning young men. I'm sure there were many who wished they could peek under the Lone Ranger's mask. I appreciate Waters' observation: << Isn’t it true that the first music we love that our parents hate, that becomes the soundtrack of our life — and we should listen to it ever since? >>

It's great to learn more about Orville Peck, confirming that he is gay, uses the mask to force people to focus on his music, and that he has been collaborating with major stars like Gaga, Miley and Shania.

Thanks again for your visit and comment, for doing research on the side and for helping me artificially inflate my comment total. That's the complete blogger package. Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend, good buddy Kirk!

  8. Hi Shady,

So sorry I'm late to the party. I had the last few days off, I used up time before I put in my notice. I got caught up with your tunage!

What a cool playlist! I'm not familiar with any of these songs. I really liked The Hillbilly Moon Explosion and Boogie Woogie Country Girl. I really liked Orville Peck as well.

I'll be back later, once my day slows down a bit, I will give this another listen. Have a great Thankful Thursday!

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Welcome back, dear friend! You've been off the grid for close to a week and I'm happy to see you again. Thanks for dropping by for vol. 1 of Nothing To Lose.

Yessum, the Gecko Bros., the bad boy heroes of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, are going hardcore, pulling no punches, as they present their first full play list of outlaw tunes here on SPMM Retro Radio. This tuneage is not for the meek and timid. It's old gold bold.

I'm pleased that you liked Hillbilly Moon Explosion (not to be confused with the Lennon Sisters), Swedish rock & roller Micke Muster doing his version of the oft recorded "Boogie Woogie Country Girl," and creepy cowboy Orville Peck (not to be confused with Johnny Mathis) with a video that clearly borrows imagery and camera techniques from directors David Lynch and Russ Meyer.

Thanks for having a look and a listen, and happy TT to you as well, dear friend JM!

    2. Hi Shady,

Yeah, I decided to take a few days off before I handed in my two weeks notice to my full-time job. Monday I had a background check for my new job; Tuesday I went to AC and Wednesday I relaxed. My parents were away for a few days, so I took the time to relax. I also started a new medication and I'm trying to get used to it before I start my new job; I'm taking a step by from some things.

That is too true, dear friend! Tonight when I go roller skating, this will be my playlist tonight. Thanks for providing the tuneage, as always.

Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Sorry I didn't see your comment earlier, dear friend. I too have been away from the computer and the blog circuit. Mrs. Shady's been running me ragged helping her with household chores - my favorite thing in the whole world. :)

Starting a new job soon, it makes sense that you took some time to relax and gather yourself. That day trip to AC looked like a blast. I hope you have a safe and happy outing at the rink tonight. Soon the rollers will be replaced by blades and you'll be on ice. I hope you'll take the Gecko playlist with you tonight.

Thanks for stopping back in, dear friend JM!
