Brian & Toto Ask, "Is Shady's Place Going to the Dogs?" SPMM's Deejay Dawgs Bark "3 Cheers for 13 Years!"

Hi, Folks!
I'm Brian Griffin.
As I'm sure you know,
I'm the personable pooch
from Family Guy and a
Shady Bunch deejay...
host of Eclectic Avenue
right here on S-P-M-M
Retrosonic Radio.

And I'm Toto Moto.
I make no bones about the fact that I'm
Shady Del Knight's dog. I'm also the blog
mascot, Chief Petting Officer and a DJ -
The Hound of Sound on S-P-M-M, host
of Toto's Top Tunes Time Tunnel.
My motto: "I aim to fleas!"

Today Brian and I are gonna start from
scratch (BA-DUM-BUMP) and help
Shady salivate his 13th anniversary
as a blogger including three years
of bringing you music and fun
here at Shady's Place.

Toto and I will each play a favorite song,
and we will be introducing three exciting
radio personalities who will be joining
The Shady Bunch deejay staff full time
beginning next year. I'll start us off.

In 1990, rapper M.C. Hammer topped
the R&B chart with his signature song
"U Can't Touch This." Here to do a
parody of the song is Peter Griffin,
my human on Family Guy. Peter
sings-- "Can't Touch Me!"

"Can't Touch Me" - Peter Griffin
(sung to the tune of "U Can't Touch This" by M.C. Hammer,
orig. May/June 1990, highest chart pos. #1 R&B/#4 Cash Box,
#8 Hot 100scene from ep. of TV series Family Guy)

Hi everyone!
I'm Morgan Brody.
You might recognize me as the CSI level III on
the TV series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
I'm happy to let you know that, beginning
next year, I'll be the host of a new radio
show here on S-P-M-M. It'll be called
CSI: Cool Song Investigation.

Now I might look like the typical
girl next door, your kid sister
or a fashionista mall rat,
but I assure you that I'm
a seasoned professional.

I'm meticulous in my work. I dot every
"i" and cross every genre to bring you the
best and coolest tunes in the music world.

As a preview of my show I dug up a great performance by an exciting young English
vocalist named Amelia Rendell. In 2016,
Amelia sang lead for the Stanley Dee
tribute band in a live show at a London
pub. Watch and listen as Amelia and the
band delight the crowd with their cover
of "Do It Again," the Steely Dan song
that brushed the top 5 in 1973.

feat. Amelia Rendell (Aug. 2016 perf. at Half Moon Pub
in Putney, SW London, UK)

Isn't Amelia great? Okay, I uncovered
another fantastic cover song for you.
It was recorded by Eden's Crush, a
Los Angeles based pop girl group
created in 2001 on the now defunct
WB Network's TV series Popstars.
The Eden's Crush lineup included
Nicole Scherzinger who found fame
a few years later as lead singer of the
Pussycat Dolls. In 2001 Eden's Crush
released an album that contains their
version of "The Glamorous Life," the
song written by Prince and first waxed
by singer and percussionist Sheila E.
In 1984 Sheila E.'s single reached the
top 10 on the pop chart and went all
the way to number one on the Dance
survey. The cover by Eden's Crush
is way cool. Let's investigate!

Hi, I'm Evie Barret.
I'm the new sheriff in the tiny town
of Willard's Mill, New Hampshire,
on the comedy horror TV series
Stan Against Evil.
My new radio show, coming in 2022,
is called Good Verses Evie, get it?

On Good Verses Evie I'll play songs with
lyrics that inspire, stir your emotions and
make you think, and I've got a couple of
Beatlesque samples. The first is a famous
show tune performed by Emily Linge, a
gifted young singer & musician in Dubai.
Originally recorded in 1950 and used in
the 1957 musical The Music Man, the
song was made even more famous by
The Beatles who waxed it in 1963.

Here's another one I'm sure you
remember. In the late summer
and early fall of 1971, ex-Beatle
Paul McCartney and his wife
Linda topped the U.S. chart
with a lyric rich song that
was the first in a string of
post-Beatle number one hit
singles for Paul in America.

Well hello there, Shady. That's right,
it's me, your old buddy, you old pal,
The Guy
Under the Seats.
Bet you conveniently forgot all about me since
the last time I was here. Bet you wish I didn't
even exist so that you could continue your
reign as self-proclaimed leader of the free
blog world unopposed. Well I got news, pal.
You're gonna regret the day your were born,
Mr. Poopy Pants, because I'm back and I'm
here to stay, here to make your life a living
hell as a new member of your illustrious
Shady Bunch DJ squad starting in 2022.

My show, the one you sorely neglected for years, the one
I adopted as my own and made a lot better, will still

Hi again, folks. This is your old hi-fi fido,
Toto Moto. On Top Tunes Time Tunnel
I spin the super sounds of the Swingin' 60s.
Here's a hit single that bridged the gap
between two musical eras, the innocent
teen pop years of the 50s and early 60s,
and the rock band years of mid to late 60s
when pop music turned harder and heavier.
Believed to be dirty, the ditty was banned
by radio stations all across the country.

S-P-M-M's got the slab and your Pooch with

Ooops, I just splashed my drink on
Chris Elliott. That's gonna mean
50 years of bad luck. Hey lishen,
I'm not as drunk as some thinkle
peep I am, okay? Anyway, thanks
for coming to Shady Del Knight's
13th anniversary party featuring
some of the new faces, voices and
personalities coming to S-P-M-M
Retrosonic Radio next year. Now
for Toto Moto this is Brian Griffin
saying so long and see you soon!

  1. Love this entry with Peter Griffin who knows just what to say. This first gal has a great voice and so does the 2nd gal with this sweet and lovely tune from The Music Man. It featured I. the Wedding Singer too. Sir Paul kept up with making hits like the song you showcase here. I always thought the Steve Miller Band was blues oriented so I am always surprised when I hear them sing Abracadabra. I dance to this song many a times in the 80s. I just love Louie which was fun to listen to and watch with those go- go dancers just a movin’ and a groovin’. I hope you are staying nice and cool and enjoy your lovely day.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

Thanks for coming, dear friend! You shot to the top of the leader board, earning the Early Bird award this week.

Looks like you found a lot to like in this lineup presented by Brian and Toto, including that nutty song parody by Peter Griffin. Yessum, he does get some good ones across in his version of Hammer's "U Can't Tough This." I'm glad you appreciate Amelia and Emily. Amelia now serves as frontwoman for the UK based Bluejays Rock & Roll band. Emily has a huge following on YouTube and plays piano, guitar and other instruments and sings like a lark. She's one to watch.

Please post @ BB Creations vintage footage of yourself dancing to "Abracadabra." :)

I appreciate your visit as I celebrate the completion of 13 years of blogging, Birgit. You are one of the brightest spots on the timeline of my blogging career and I thank you for your continued friendship and support. Have a super Tuesday and I'll see you tamale for the WSC!

  2. I think you know I'm not the biggest fan of covers (I still think of them as "remakes" when done by other big names), so it goes without saying that I'm more drawn to the final three selections. All different, but equally good! Uncle Albert has always been on of my favorite solo McCartney songs.

Pat's back in my good graces now, but he was a very bad dog the other day. He slipped out the door and tried to pick a fight with one of his outside brothers. Bad move. He's lucky we quickly intervened. (he only suffered a scratched ear)

    1. Hi, Kelly!

I'm delighted to see you, dear friend! Thanks for putting the leash on my buddy Pat and bringing him over to meet Brian & Toto and help me salivate my 13th blog anniversary!

Yessum, I remember you telling me you prefer originals to covers. I'm pleased that you liked the last three songs which boast nicely remastered original studio sound. The Steve Miller video is a sync edit that marries remastered sound to footage taken from an episode of Top of The Pops which intercut shots of the studio dancers with scenes from Steve Miller's music video. I found it interesting to read what Wiki had to say about that official Steve Miller video:

<< The video is one of the most iconic music videos of all time and was shown alongside the birth of MTV. The language of music videos was yet to be created and with the Abracadabra video many aspects of the music video's visual vocabulary were pioneered in this video, setting a precedent for all videos that followed. The main lyric "Abra, abra cadabra, I'm going to reach out and grab ya" is epitomized by a beautiful sorceress with flowing hair, performed by a teenage actress/model symbolizing "the Abracadabra girl" , MTV's first "video vixen". With the repeating image of her bewitching stare and blowing hair, she appears to be casting a spell, directing the magical actions, encapsulating the playful sexy spirit of this ear-worm of a pop song.

Two young men, professional jugglers, perform alongside the beautiful "witch". In a series of magical situations, wearing various costumes, the trio perform tricks and illusions. The boys juggle batons, the girl juggles scarves, a handkerchief turns into a dove, stars come out of a hat and other witchery. The Abracadabra girl set a precedent or formula for other video vixens to follow, i.e. the mysteriously beautiful and seductive muse, full of surprises. >>

My goodness, Kelly. I'm glad Pat wasn't mauled by your larger outdoor dogs. I wonder what got into my scrappy buddy? You have already suffered tragedies with some of your animals. I'm glad you averted another through speedy intervention.

Thanks again for dropping in, dear friend Kelly. I am grateful to have your friendship and support these last several years, and I hope to keep you entertained throughout year #14. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  3. Happy blogiversary, dear friend! 13 years, with three of them here. Wow! Impressive! Congratulations!

You had me grooving this evening! These are some of my favourite songs: Abracadabra and Louie Louie are classic faves. I remember listening to those songs all the time in art class. :) I haven't listened to Eden's Crush in a while and this was such a great reminder.

The covers are amazing too! I like the covers as much as the originals. Bravo gals! I can't wait to give this playlist another listen tomorrow. Thanks for bringing the music, as always dear friend.

Here's to many more years! I can't wait to see what the next 13+ years bring! :)

    1. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for coming to the anniversary party, dear friend! Brian and Toto are happy to see you and so am I. It really doesn't seem like it's been three whole years since I switched from SDMM to SPMM.

I'm excited that you know and like the chart-topping hits by Steve Miller Band and The Kingsmen, and pleasantly surprised that you remember the girl group Eden's Crush which included Nicole Scherzinger who went on to greater fame as leader of The Pussycat Dolls. Personally, I like their cover of "Glamorous Life" better than Sheila E.'s original. Glad you enjoyed Amelia in the UK and Emily in Dubai, two fine young singers with growing legions of fans.

Believe it or not, I already have close to 13 more years of blog content plotted. Now all I need to do is live long enough to assemble all those posts and publish them. It makes me happy to know you'll be taking this journey with me.

Thank you again, very much, for attending my 13th blogiversary bash and for your loyal friendship and support these last 7 or more years, dear friend Jessica Marie. Enjoy the rest of your week!

    2. Hi Shady,

I have some good news that I will share at a later date, but it's been a non-stop party since yesterday AND I'm party hopping. Ha! :D

I remember listening to Eden's Crush as a young child, especially when Disney and/or Nick would play their music videos, along with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilara and 3LW and Destiny's Child. Ah, so many good memories!

Really?! Well, I can't wait to follow along! I knock on wood for you and I will be a faithful listener for a long while, even in the distant future. I enjoy your content. :)

Have a great Thankful Thursday, dear friend!

    3. Hi, Jessica Marie!

Thanks for returning to my blogiversary party, dear friend. The punch bowl is still half full!

I already know your good news, but I won't spill it here. I'll wait until you are ready, but congratulations! Seems we both have reason to salivate (celebrate) this week.

Thanks for letting me know you remember Eden's Crush videos being played on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Frankly, I don't remember them, but when I came across this Sheila E cover they recorded, I couldn't resist posting it. I wish they had made a music video to go along with it.

Thanks for agreeing to renew your Shady's Place contract for another 13 years. :) I will try not to disappoint you. (I think you'll enjoy some of my H-ween content coming up this October.

Thanks again for coming by and happy TT to you as well, dear friend JM!

  4. Some really good covers there my friend. My favorite of the bunch is "Till There Was You." What a coincidence, I just finished a transcription piece regarding World War II and the invasion of Pearl Harbor where Admiral Halsey was mentioned several times. I always think it fascinating when the universe seems to collide in that way. Hope you have a marvelous rest of your week my friend.

    1. Hi, Janet!

I hope you brought my buddy Benny along, dear friend, because Brian and Toto are eager to meet him. :) Thanks for joining the fun as I salivate (correct usage) completion of 13 full years of blogging.

I'm delighted that you appreciate the cover versions I posted along with a few originals. YouTube sensation Emily Linge is a prodigy. She's been developing her amazing talent as a singer and musician since childhood. She plays piano and sings on most of her YouTube videos, but lately she's been playing guitar and other instruments. Fans adore her. I think Emily gave us a wonderful rendition of "Till There Was You."

Thanks for the anecdote about Admiral Halsey. Yessum, it is fascinating that your transcription work coincided with my posting of Paul & Linda McCartney's chart-topping hit.

      Admiral Halsey notified me
He had to have a berth or he couldn't get to sea
I had another look and I had a cup of tea and butter pie
      Butter pie?
The butter wouldn't melt so I put it in the pie

Thank you again for joining me today and for two or more years of teaching, learning, sharing, caring and friendship, dear Janet. Take good care of yourself and Benny and enjoy the rest of your week!

  5. I know Brian. I haven't watched the show many times but at least I know him this time. lol

Aww Toto Moto is so cute. What a great picture. Falcor says hello.

13 Years is a great accomplishment. Most bloggers don't make it that long. Happy blogoversary!

I loved CSI, what a great show.

The Stanley Dee tribute band is pretty good.

I heard the Sheila E's song but I hadn't heard the cover before.

I've always liked abracadabra. That's a good song.

Louie, Louie I know I've heard before.

Sometimes covers are good and sometimes not so much. Depends on the band I guess.

    1. Hi, Mary!

Thanks for coming to my 13th blogiversary party, dear friend!

I'm glad you saw some familiar faces in the post. Toto Moto seems to have attracted Falcor's interest. I remember you telling me a few weeks ago that you watched CSI Vegas. I figured you'd welcome a new SPMM radio show hosted by one of the main characters on the series, Morgan Brody. If you like comedy horror TV series, you should check out Stan Against Evil. It's a hoot. Sheriff Evie Barret will be your host for her new series Good Verses Evie, so stay tuned for that.

I'm also pleased that you liked "Abracadabra" along with the Steely Dan cover by the Stanley Dee band featuring Amelia Rendell. Amelia is now lead female singer for The Bluejays - billed as "the UK's best vintage Rock 'n' Roll band."

Thank you for your kind words about my 13 years of blogging, Mary. You are one of my newest followers, and I am very thankful we crossed paths here in the blogosphere. I always enjoy your Apartment Hell posts, and you seem to have a good time here at Shady's Place. I look forward to keeping you entertained throughout year #14.

Thank you again for your kind visit and your friendship and support, dear friend Mary!

  6. Happy blogiversary, Shady!

"Abracabra" and "Glamourous Life" are two songs I completely forgot about (in fact, I didn't even recognize the titles) but hearing them again (albeit one as a cover) brought me right back to the 1980s when I listened to a lot more Top 40 radio than I do now.

I think one of the things that made the Beatles sound so distinctive was Paul McCartney's unique talent for combining rock 'n' roll with English music hall/Broadway showtune-types of melodies. And I'm sure it would have been McCartney's idea to cover a song from The Music Man. John Lennon probably hated the idea, but I don't.

As for the cover songs you feature here, gender-switching vocals, such as the Steely Band tribute band and that young girl from Dubai(?), are always going to stand out a lot more than something like Eden's Crush, where it comes across more as a blatant imitation of the original artist. I guess that's unfair to EC because they can't help the gender they're born in (oh, geez, now I sound like JK Rowling--I didn't mean for it to come out like THAT.)

Finally, "Louie, Louie" may be from 1963, but the dancers in the miniskirts and go-go boots tells me the TV appearance was from later in the decade.

    That's all I got.

    1. Hi, Kirk!

Thanks for coming to the potty, good buddy! It wouldn't be a salivation w/o you.

I'm happy to have triggered memories of the 80s with those hits from the decade by Steve Miller and Nicole S. with Eden's Crush. Those early MTV years were exciting. I studied the many iconic music videos played on the channel and borrowed some of the techniques to use in my own videos that were produced in my capacity as production manager at an MTV style station. I'm glad you appreciated the two live covers posted by Brian and Toto.

As you can see from the caption beneath the video of The Kingsmen, the guys were appearing on the January 22, 1966, episode of Hollywood a Go Go. That's more than two years after their "Louie Louie" single (another cover) was hot on the chart. Typically, an artist was invited on one of those music shows to perform two songs, one hit oldie and their latest release. The ladies you see go-going behind The Kingsmen are the famous Gazzarri Dancers. They were not my favorite dance troupe because their moves were usually too wild, acrobatic and ape-like for my taste.

Kirk, you started following me back on the old blog, Shady Dell Music & Memories, and made the switch to Shady's Place when I moved here in July 2018. I greatly appreciate your friendship and support all this time. I have learned a lot from following S.O.A. D. and I enjoy hosting and entertaining you on my space. Here's to more fun and educational years for both of us. Thanks again for your visit and enjoy the rest of your week, good buddy Kirk!

  7. Happy 13th Shady! I look forward to the next 13 years of seeing your blog here.

This was all good...Brian always delivers! The Peter video "Can't touch me" is so cute! I saw a glimpse of M.C. Hammer later in the video with a disgusted look on his face, haha! He loved it!

The Steely Dan cover "Do it Again" is so well done by the Stanley Dee band. This is a great song, and this group took it home with their great musicians and Amelia...what a voice!

It was fun seeing videos and hearing some of the older classics, "Till there Was You" is so beautiful the way this young girl sings it. And I was so glad to see the video and song "Uncle Albert". Paul and Linda had a pretty great band, once I got used to the idea of no more Beatles!

I didn't know the Prince song by Sheila E. cover, but like the beat. Great for dancing, and done well by Eden's Crush.

I knew most of these song, and "Abracadabra" was a fun song. The video was pretty cool.

I'm always up for hearing "Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen. I know there were a few different versions, (some made up by my classmates, lol). I loved seeing the video of their performance, and noticed they have a lefthanded guitarist.

I must be going now, my typing is getting bad on this chromebook. Great post you guys...you do good by Shady on his anniversary. Take care, dear Shady!

    1. Hi, Suzanne!

I'm delighted that you made it here for my 13th anniversary party, dear friend!

Thanks for singling out the Peter Griffin parody song at the beginning of the post. Peter gets some great zingers across in his revised version of Hammer's "U Can't Touch This."

I'm thrilled that you appreciated the powerful pipes of frontwoman Amelia Rendell (now the lead female singer for the UK-based Bluejays Rock & Roll cover band), and young Emily Linge, a sensation on YouTube thanks to her channel's uploads of performances showcasing her talent as a singer and multi-instrumental musician.

I hope the Paul & Linda video hangs on until this post has completed its run a few days from now. I have needed to replace it several times in the months since I finished the draft. It seems like the official music videos of the 70s and 80s are removed by YouTube more often than those from other decades, many times because the Youtubers have their accounts suspended for repeated copyright violations.

Good eye noticing the left-handed guitarist with The Kingsmen! I'm a lefty myself but didn't notice, probably because I kept getting distracted by The Gazzarri Dancers in the background. :)

I'm sorry you are still having to peck away on your chromebook. I look forward to the day when you can view my content and comment on it with greater ease, as you did all those years. I always appreciate your effort.

Speaking of which...Suzanne, you have been a follower and a dear friend for most of the 13 years of my blogging career. Thank you very much for sticking with me! You and I have an important connection because you remember more of the older songs than other readers who comment. I always enjoy chatting with you about the songs and artists of the 50s and 60s and reading your anecdotes related to them. I do hope to still be around 13 years from now to entertain you and reminisce with you about the great songs and good times of our youth.

I hope you and Scootie are in good health and in good spirits. Please join me if you can next Monday or thereafter when the dark and dangerous Gecko brothers, Seth & Richie, from the TV series From Dusk Till Dawn, present volume 1 of their new SPMM radio show Nothing To Lose. Until then, I wish you and Scootie a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Suzanne!

  8. Hi, friend Shady! I hope you and your loved ones are still doing well? All is good here, except for "the few things" that are not. I posted a new entry. Other than that, ever since my December 2020 retirement, I have been exclusively living under my retirement rock, and suspect, it will continue for the last 10/ 20 years of my life. I do believe, that, apart from Jenny's death, the one year covid thing working on our unit was by far the most traumatic experience. However, I suspect, I will always enjoy music and dance :) Thank you for your continued friendship :) christina and theo.

I'm excited to see you, dear friend! Thank you for coming down. Your return couldn't have been timed any better, because this week I am celebrating completion of 13 years of blogging. You have been an important part of my blogging experience around half of that span. I'm thankful that our paths crossed and I value our friendship over the years.

The dreadful year you spend on the front lines of the healthcare system during last year's COVID crisis was indeed traumatic. It was an endurance test and a test of courage. You passed with flying colors, and now it is time for you to take a well deserved rest and enjoy life. I hope you will soon be able to emerge from under your rock and fully enjoy your retirement. I hope you never lose the desire to sing, dance, laugh and have fun here at Shady's Place. You and Theo have always been welcome here and always will be.

Thank you very much for being here for my blogiversary celebration, dear friend cat. Please take good care of yourself and TT and come back and see me again soon!

You featured all good tunes and covers here today..or a few days ago I guess. I don't know how I missed this post but I'm glad I could see it today and although I don't know everyone featured I do love Toto Moto! Plus I loved Louie Louie. Still don't know what they are singing, don't know what's suppose to be dirty lyrics but I do love those GoGo boots featured on the dancers! Ahhh...so many memories. 1. Hi, YaYa!

I'm very happy to see you, dear friend! You got here just in time to help me wrap up my 13th anniversary party. (I saved you some punch and a slice of pizza. The pizza's cold by now, but I've got a microwave. :)

I was hoping and praying something hadn't gone wrong in your world again to prevent you from stopping by. I wouldn't have wanted to salivate this special occasion without you, one of my oldest and dearest friends. You reached out to me 8 or more years ago and we have done tons of sharing and caring ever since, following each other through life's ups and downs. It means a great deal to me. Thank you for sticking with me all this time!

I'm pleased that you enjoyed the lineup of songs presented by Brian, Toto, Morgan, Evie and Chris Elliott- The Guy Under The Seats. Yessum, those are the Gazzarri Dancers, the go-go terpsichore troupe on Hollywood A Go-Go. They were very attractive women, but I didn't particularly care for their wild, exaggerated choreography. Toto Moto sends smooches, thanks you for the compliment and admits to being sweet on you, too. Toto will be back in year #14 along with the other personalities in this week's post, plus there are even more new hosts and hostesses coming on board in the next couple of years, so please stay tuned.

Thank you again for your faithful friendship and support all these years, dear friend YaYa. Take care and have a wonderful week ahead!

  10. Tom,

OH DARN! I'm so sorry for not coming over to extend happy congrats on 13 amazing years of blogging. You know I saw your post come into my in-box and I thought I hopped over but I guess having too many irons in the fire last week caused a memory lapse. It's been wild with going to physical therapy two days a week, then DH had to go by his office to clear out his cubical now that he's working from home on a permanent basis, and then I got side lined preparing for his 62nd birthday. Oh well...I'm late to the party but I can enjoy your music if nothing else. Of the cover songs I like best Emily Linge singing "Till There Was You". She had a lovely and sweet voice. Steve Miller Band "Abracadabra" is great old tune. WOW, you pulled a vintage record off the shelf with "Louie Louie"! I was only 2-years old when this song released but it got a lot of play time in the 60s and I remember my Uncle Roger singing this song. :) Great spin of tunes. Thanks for sharing and here's to another 13 years in Blogosphere, my friend. You're duh-bomb!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thanks for coming to my anniversary bash, dear friend! There's still one cup of punch and one slice of cake that I saved just for you. :) Now the gang's all here - all the long term followers that I cherish have dropped by, and I thank you very much for your warm and sincere comments.

Happy 62 to DH! He's getting to be an old-timer like Shady! :)

I'm pleased that you recognize the talent of up-and-coming star Emily Linge. She sings like a lark and plays several different mewsical instruments. She's one to watch! Thanks for sharing the tidbit about your Uncle Roger singing "Louie Louie." He must have made up his own words, because nobody seemed to know exactly what they were back then. My buddies and I made up dirty lyrics and sang them for our own amusement. :)

"Once a friend... always a friend," you once wrote to me. Thank you again for your faithful friendship and support all these years, Cathy. I wouldn't have wanted to miss the opportunity of knowing you. Have a super week ahead, dear friend!
